We’ve got the windy city covered., matchbox twenty and matt nathanson finally fulfill the “slow dream” at moline’s vibrant arena.

Matchbox Twenty

After getting postponed for three consecutive years stemming from the pandemic, Matchbox Twenty’s “Slow Dream” Tour was finally fulfilled inside a jammed Vibrant Arena At The Mark with an Illinois encore slated for the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park on Sunday, August 6.

However, the excessive delay did have its upside, allowing the pop/rock/alternative act to release an entirely new album, “Where The Light Goes,” following an eleven-year absence from the studio.

Matchbox Twenty

Outside of those, front man Rob Thomas, guitarist Kyle Cook, bassist Brian Yale and drummer Paul Doucette initially introduced several recent tracks in a row, all of which adapted a brightly arranged, modern day approach, but may have been best digested by spreading them out a bit more.

However, an unplugged set comprised of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” hilariously reworded as “Moline,” and the older “If You’re Gone” nonetheless got the sing-a-long started again, which resumed come “Bent,” Back 2 Good” and “Long Day.”

Even the current “Rebels” ranked right up there, though the encore especially sent everyone over the edge thanks to “3 A.M.,” “Unwell,” “Push” and “Bright Lights,” all defining moments of late 1990s and 2000s that came across as fresh as the day they were recorded.

Matchbox Twenty

In fact, the affable guy with a guitar was just as much a stand-up comedian as a troubadour and had early comers either cracking up or participating in ten or so tunes, culminating in “Come On Get Higher” to elevate the extensive evening.

I was so excited to see Matchbox Twenty and I definitely was not disappointed. I grew up listening to their music and "Unwell" was probably the first song I ever knew all the words to. The Matchbox Twenty concert I was a part of wasn't like some crazy party. There weren't giant mosh pits and people jumping all around but it was special. It really felt like you were a part of something. The band, especially Rob Thomas (the lead singer), really wanted you to have fun. You could tell that they had fun too. Rob loved the words he was singing and the band loved the songs they were playing. They had a good mix of their earlier and later songs. It was almost impossible not to shout out all the words you knew to the songs. It really was impossible for anyone there to not be enjoying it. I think another important thing about a Matchbox Twenty concert is that the fanbase is not composed of people who could ruin your experience. No one there is going to make you feel uncomfortable. The fans aren't there to get super drunk or high. They're there to listen to the music they love and that makes for a great atmosphere.

Despite a delay in start time due to a lightning storm requiring emergency "seek shelter" directive, some of their equipment getting rained on and a noise curfew requiring a shortened show, Matchbox Twenty was perfectly awesome! Much thanks by Rob Thomas for all of us diehards wearing garbage bags yet still soaked to the bone who returned to the concert after the evacuation. I didn't think their set list was shortened so if it was, they still were able to get in many of their great songs. I brought my two teenage sons to this concert, their first ever concert, and we had just a great great and memorable night. We travelled three hours to see this show, returning home at 4 a.m. The next time we get the chance to see Matchbox Twenty or Rob Thomas solo, we are so there!

We were about to leave when I mentioned to security that we not able to see. We were sitting on the lawn and the jumbo trons were not on and we were far from the stage. I had seen Black Sabbath there 10 months ago and they had huge video screens so everyone could see no matter where they were sitting. And he said.." my friend and I could walk down into the seated section and sit anywhere we wanted too, so the last 20 minutes of Matchbox 20 we were up close and I could really feel the music.

Awesome show! I loved getting to see Counting Crows and Matchbox 20!

The venue sucks. The seats are terrible in that the rows are so short you can't see anything over people. You wait in line forever to even get into the venue. Stood in line for half an hour just to get in. Waited twenty minutes before that to even park. Bathroom lines are awful. Guys jump in women's lines because they're too lazy to walk to their bathroom. Won't be going back to Lakeview anytime soon!

Overall, great concert. Matt Nathanson drew the audience in quickly and kept their attention. Both performers gave a great tribute to Tom Petty which was well done. Hearing the diverse selection on songs over the last few decade from Matchbox 20 gave something to everyone. Thanks for keeping the price affordable.

What a great show!! Super fun. The band was so energetic and you could tell they were having fun. Rob Thomas was stellar. He used the entire stage during the whole show. He is definitely a seasoned entertainer. I couldn't believe how much energy he had! Would definitely recommend and would see them again!

Great show! We really appreciated the fact that the band performed their songs just like you remember them. No lengthy solos or improvised vocal changes. Rob Thomas was spot on. Very personable and interacted well with the crowd. Very professional performance. I would definitely go to see them again.

Matchbox Twenty & The Wallflowers at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre

Matchbox twenty & the wallflowers tickets, credit union 1 amphitheatre | tinley park, illinois, event rescheduled to sunday 6th august 2023. originally sunday 7th august 2022. all original tickets are still valid.

Matchbox Twenty return to the stage for the first time since 2017! The band previously reunited for the "A Brief History of Everything" tour to mark the 20th anniversary of their RIAA Diamond-certified debut album Yourself or Someone Like You. Now, they're back on an extensive 50-date stint that comes to Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre on Sunday 6th August 2023 (Rescheduled from Sunday 7th August 2022) (Rescheduled from Friday 27th August 2021), where they'll be performing a set of all their biggest tunes! The alt-rock superstars will also be joined for the night by fellow alt-rock band The Wallflowers in support!

A continuation of the legacy of Orlando band Tabitha's Secret, Matchbox Twenty was formed in 1995 by vocalist and piano player Rob Thomas, bass guitarist Brian Yale, drummer Paul Doucette, lead guitarist Kyle Cook and rythm guitarist Adam Gaynor. It didn't take long for the group to find huge success within the industry, both critcally and commercially: their 1996 debut album was a mainstream hit, certified 12-times platinum (diamond) in the US and multi-platinum in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Similar success followed with their second and third albums, Mad Season (2000) and More Than You Think You Are (2002), which both launched hit singles and were certified quadruple-platinum and double-platinum, repectively. The band have endured a number of changes in personnel over their career, and have embarked on a few hiatuses over the years, due in part to the success of three-time Grammy Award-winner and frontman Thomas' solo career. The band reconvened in 2012 to release a fourth studio album, North, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and in 2020 they are enjoying a revitalized career once again.

Matchbox Twenty’s Current Tour is a Glorious Ode to Their Entire Career

The band is pulling songs from every album on the tour that was three years in the making

matchbox 20 tour chicago

Last night in Pennsylvania, iconic alt-rockers Matchbox Twenty finally took the stage at the Wind Creek Event Center. The band’s current tour has been three years in the making. The run, originally slated for the summer of 2020, has finally come to fruition. While “Matchbox Twenty’s 2020 Tour” had a sweet ring to it, sadly it wasn’t meant to be. Now, the band is finally on the road giving it everything they’ve got for the fans who have literally been holding on to their tickets for years.

The band took the stage and kicked things off with “Friends,” the opening track from their latest album, Where the Light Goes . The album came out back in May, but it probably would have never been made had their tour not been delayed for three years. Starting off with the track seemed more poetic when you heard frontman Rob Thomas sing, “Hey, all my friends, all my friends are here, singing it out.”

And sing they did, for the next twenty songs.

Matchbox Twenty live 2023 [Credit: Matt Bishop]

“How Far We’ve Come” followed, continuing the metaphors. “I believe the world is burning to the ground / Oh well I guess we’re gonna find out / Let’s see how far we’ve come,” Thomas sang. Indeed, the world did seem to be burning a bit back in 2020, but we’ve come a long way since then, baby, and Matchbox Twenty are back on the road behind a record that was never intended to be made.

The threw is all the way back to the beginning on the third song with “Real World.” One of several smash hit singles from the band’s watershed diamond-selling debut album, it was met with an explosion of cheers from the crowd when the opening notes hit their ears. Kyle Cook’s melancholy riff could very well have a place on the Mount Rushmore of 90s alternative rock, and hearing it come through the speakers last night brought us all right back to 1996.

Matchbox Twenty live 2023 [Credit: Matt Bishop]

Throughout the set, the band left no stone unturned. They pulled multiple songs off each one of their studio releases, putting together a hefty 21-song setlist that fully encapsulated their storied career. They didn’t ignore their new record. In fact, they pushed it, playing four songs from the LP. “Wild Dogs (Running In a Slow Dream)” is a sweet slice of nostalgia that serves as a still frame of where the band is right now. Previous gems like “Disease,” “If You’re Gone,” “Mad Season,” “Bent,” and “Back 2 Good,” among others, resonated tremendously. At times, the crowd nearly drowned out Rob Thomas’s distinct vocals. He didn’t seem to mind too much.

They wrapped things up with the all-new “Rebels,” from their latest effort.

matchbox 20 tour chicago

With the crowd needing just a little bit more, the band returned to the stage to give them a whole lot more. They kicked off their four-song encore with “3AM.” The crowd erupted with the first few strums of the song’s opening chords. “Unwell” and “Push” followed. They finally finished up with the tear-jerking anthem, “Bright Lights,” from their GRAMMY®-nominated 2002 album More Than You Think You Are . One line from the track stands out: “There’s some things you don’t need until they leave you / They’re the things that you miss.” It’s so good to have Matchbox Twenty back in our lives. Their songs are part of the soundtrack of an era that’s fleeting a bit. Hopefully, though, they aren’t going to leave us again any time soon.
