Welcome to Halifax

land acknwoledgement logo

Halifax is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.  Historically, a land acknowledgment is a traditional practice shared amongst Indigenous groups to recognize the Indigenous land and territory they are visiting. Today a land acknowledgement remains a way to express one’s gratitude to the Indigenous people for being stewards of the land that we live and work on.

When to visit

  • Very Favourable
  • Unfavourable

Halifax is a fun city. There should be more information about activities to do there. The harbor harbor hopper is a must and should be included in your package

Bad weather

We had very cold, foggy, and rainy weather any time we were 50 miles or less from Halifax, so couldn't do much outdoors. Parking regulations discourage visiting. Everywhere else it was fantastic.

Citadel to see absolutely

(Translated by Google) Don't miss the Citadel and the Historic Properties where we went and then returned on the last day. Great discovery of the past history of the city and its central role during the Second World War.

Government of Canada announces funding to improve international connections at Halifax Stanfield International Airport

From: Transport Canada

News release

The Government of Canada is making sure communities have the infrastructure they need to grow, build more homes, and keep connected across our country.

June 26, 2024            Halifax, Nova Scotia            Transport Canada

Today, the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Sean Fraser, on behalf of the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, announced a new investment of up to $8.3 million for a project at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, to increase the number of international and domestic passenger flights.

The project consists of building a new international connections facility at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. This will improve the connections process, making it faster and easier for passengers arriving in Canada from international flights as well as those connecting to other domestic destinations. This will also result in additional cargo hold capacity, to increase the movement of goods between Nova Scotia and international markets.

Improving passenger connectivity, facilitating trade, while making economic and environmental improvements, contributes to building vibrant communities in Atlantic Canada, with the infrastructure they need to grow.

“Today’s $8.3 million investment will help build vibrant communities with the infrastructure they need to grow. This project's focus on improving passenger connectivity will provide more options for travellers and and make Halifax Airport an even more important transportation hub.” The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez Minister of Transport
“Strong supply chains result in a strong economy that benefits all Canadians. The new international connections facility at the Halifax Airport will not only support this by bolstering trade between Nova Scotia and international markets but will also create more than 4,000 jobs.” The Honourable Sean Fraser Minister, Housing, Infrastructure and Communities
“We are grateful for the financial support we received from Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund to help build our new International Connections Facility. This expanded facility will help us attract more international air services to Halifax, which will increase our overall cargo capacity, enhance our global connectivity and accelerate regional economic growth. Together, we are finding innovative ways to ensure the safe, secure and efficient movement of people and goods.” Joyce Carter President & CEO, Halifax International Airport Authority

Quick facts

By 2034, the project will create more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs, resulting from increasing both passenger and cargo handling capacity. The project will also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Through the National Trade Corridors Fund, the Government of Canada is investing to help goods move smoothly throughout Canada's supply chains.

The National Trade Corridors Fund is a competitive, merit-based program designed to help infrastructure owners and users invest in the critical transportation assets that support economic activity in Canada.  A total of $4.1 billion has been committed to meritorious projects since the program’s inception.

Through the National Trade Corridors Fund, Transport Canada is supporting improvements to Canada’s roads, rail, air, and marine shipping routes to foster domestic and international trade.

Tennessee turns over probe into failed Graceland sale to federal authorities, report says

halifax tourism office

By The Associated Press

Posted Jun 25, 2024 08:51:11 PM.

Last Updated Jun 25, 2024 09:01:19 PM.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee attorney general’s office said Tuesday that it has turned over its investigation into the failed sale of Elvis Presley’s home Graceland at a foreclosure auction to federal authorities, a newspaper reported.

The Commercial Appeal reported that Amy Lannom Wilhite, a spokesperson for Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, said in a statement that the investigation into the attempted foreclosure sale of the prominent tourist attraction “was a matter best suited for federal law enforcement.”

“We have faith in our federal partners and know they will handle this appropriately,” the statement said.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday which federal authorities would be investigating. Wilhite did not immediately returns calls, texts and emails requesting the statement.

An FBI Memphis spokesperson said the FBI does not comment on the possibility or likelihood of investigations and he declined further comment.

Skrmetti said May 23 that he was investigating the attempted foreclosure sale of Graceland, Presley’s former home-turned-museum in Memphis, where the King of Rock n’ Roll lived before he died in 1977 at age 42.

The announcement came after the proposed auction was halted by an injunction issued by Shelby County Chancellor JoeDae Jenkins after Riley Keough , Presley’s granddaughter, filed a lawsuit claiming fraud.

A public notice for a foreclosure sale of the 13-acre (5-hectare) estate posted in May said Promenade Trust, which controls the Graceland museum, owes $3.8 million after failing to repay a 2018 loan. Keough, an actor, inherited the trust and ownership of the home after the death of her mother, Lisa Marie Presley , last year.

Naussany Investments and Private Lending said Lisa Marie Presley had used Graceland as collateral for the loan, according to the foreclosure sale notice. Keough’s lawsuit alleged that Naussany presented fraudulent documents regarding the loan in September 2023 and that Lisa Maria Presley never borrowed money from Naussany.

Court documents included company addresses in Jacksonville, Florida, and Hollister, Missouri. Both were for post offices, and a Kimberling City, Missouri, reference was for a post office box. The business also is not listed in state databases of registered corporations in Missouri or Florida.

Kimberly Philbrick, the notary whose name is listed on Naussany’s documents, indicated she never met Lisa Marie Presley nor notarized any documents for her, according to the estate’s lawsuit. Jenkins, the judge, said the notary’s affidavit brings into question “the authenticity of the signature.”

A search of online records for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority showed no registration for the company. No representatives of Naussany appeared in court, though the company filed an unsuccessful motion denying the lawsuit’s allegations and opposing the estate’s request for an injunction.

A statement emailed to The Associated Press after the judge stopped the sale said Naussany would not proceed because a key document in the case and the loan were recorded and obtained in a different state, meaning “legal action would have to be filed in multiple states.” The statement, sent from an email address listed in court documents, did not specify the other state.

An email sent May 25 to the AP from the same address said in Spanish that the foreclosure sale attempt was made by a Nigerian fraud ring that targets old and dead people in the U.S. and uses the Internet to steal money.

Keough’s lawsuit remains active. No future hearings have been set.

Graceland opened as a museum and tourist attraction in 1982 and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. A large Presley-themed entertainment complex across the street from the museum is owned by Elvis Presley Enterprises.

Future of Halifax church in limbo again as HRM orders building closed for safety reasons

A fence was erected around the entrance of st. patrick's catholic church on friday.

Social Sharing

Blair Beed walked around the ornate interior of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Halifax on Friday fearful that it might be for the last time.

Small groups of glum-faced parishioners trickled in as the afternoon light filtered through the church's century-old German stained glass windows, many of them replacements for the ones destroyed in the 1917 Halifax Explosion.

Beed and his family have been involved with the 140-year-old Brunswick Street church for generations and he has been its devoted caretaker and historian for decades.

On Thursday night, Beed learned that Halifax Regional Municipality's building standards office had issued an order saying the building was unsafe and had to be vacated no later than Friday.

The order says the building must remain empty until a structural assessment report is submitted to the municipality for review and approval.

A bald-headed man in a checked blue shirt smiles for the camera.

"Today is the last day we're allowed into the building and we don't know if there's a future re-entry," Beed said.

"They were going to close us soon and this just sped up the process and made it a bit of a hurry and a shock without a celebration of the life of the building."

Beed said city workers had already posted the notice of closure on the doors of the church and erected a safety fence around the entrance by 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Two orders to comply notices are seen on a green door.

For parishioners, the closure, whether temporary or otherwise, is the latest in a litany of setbacks for the building.

Prior to the municipal closure order, the archdiocese had announced that the last mass at the church would be held on June 30, after which it would be closed.

In a letter to parishioners dated May 10, Archbishop Brian Dunn said after consultations with parish leaders and the membership, the decision was made to remove the church from sacred use.

According to the letter, the decision was based largely on the estimated cost to repair and restore the church.

A brick churech fascade is seen through a yelow safety fence.

A news release from the archdiocese on Friday, after the municipal order was issued, said once work has been done to make the structure safe, the parish would arrange for a final mass and the removal of sacred objects.

Aurea Sadi, communications officer for the archdiocese, said in an email that a recent report from structural engineers advised the archdiocese to remove the church's steeple.

St. Patrick's, which opened in 1885, is designated as both a provincial and municipal heritage property, and should be protected, the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia said in a news release Friday.

The release said the church also contains an organ built by Casavant Frères of Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., that is registered as being of historical significance.

According to the trust, cabinet approval is required before any substantial modifications or demolition can be carried out to a provincially registered heritage property.

The trust is not aware that the archdiocese has obtained permission to conduct any modifications and until permission is obtained, no permits can be granted, it said.

In an email response to inquiries from CBC News, Susan Mader Zinck, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage, said the department has not received a formal application for substantial alterations to the church.

Zinck said the archdiocese has asked about the process.

"Structural condition of a heritage property is a consideration in any application for substantial alteration or demolition," she said.

While the future of the building remains in limbo, some parishioners are fearful its closure will affect the work the church has been doing for the wider community.

Patricia Walsh says the church has been home to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul since it opened.

  • St. Patrick's Church Restoration Society doesn't fear heritage designation
  • Halifax archbishop dismayed by Saint Patrick's Church heritage designation

Walsh said church committees have been helping the community with food vouchers, school supplies and even heating and medication bills.

"Above all else is the sense of community that the parishioners have at St. Patrick's," she said. "We are family."

Beed said it was heart-wrenching to have to leave the building so suddenly with no certainty he'll ever be able to return.

"It's very difficult to say goodbye to a place you really love," Beed said through tears.

Tennessee turns over probe into failed Graceland sale to federal authorities, report says

Homegrown hospitality star Androse Bell resigns as GM at Daytona's Hard Rock Hotel

halifax tourism office

DAYTONA BEACH —  Androse Bell , general manager of the Hard Rock Hotel , one of the destination’s marquee beachside properties, has resigned from that position, according to hotel officials.

Since taking the helm at the Hard Rock shortly after its grand opening in 2018 , Bell has been widely regarded as a rising star in the Daytona Beach tourism and hospitality industry.

In addition to the Hard Rock, he also oversaw operations at the 133-room Delta By Marriott in Daytona Beach Shores as part of his leadership role at six southeastern properties as GM and regional director of operations for Atlanta-based hotel management company Hospitality Ventures Management Group.

During that time period, Bell received numerous accolades from HVMG, including 2019 GM of the Year, Hard Rock Hotel of the Year and Delta Hotel of the Year twice.

Bell’s departure came as a surprise to the staff, according to Susan Keaveney, the hotel’s director of marketing, who confirmed the news.

“I don’t have a lot of details,” said Keaveney, adding that Bell relayed the news to staff members by text message last Tuesday, news that was followed by an official corporate announcement on Friday.

“He (Bell) said he would cherish all of the great memories and looked forward to watching our continued success,” Keaveney said.

Michael Bartscher, who has been the hotel’s director of operations since 2020, is now the Hard Rock’s acting general manager, she said.

“He’s been our director of operations for four years and he’s been phenomenal running the hotel from an operations standpoint,” Keaveney said. “When you’re in that role, you’re overseeing food and beverage, front desk operations, maintenance, you’re over everything. He’s well-versed to be acting GM for us.”

Bell didn’t respond to text or voicemail messages seeking comment. Nor were calls and emails to HVMG’s Atlanta headquarters returned. A call to Abbas Abdulhussein, head of Asante Asset Management LLC, the hotel’s owner, also wasn't immediately returned.

Bell heralded as homegrown hospitality success story

Bob Davis, president and CEO of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, praised Bell’s attributes in an email to the organization’s membership about his departure, referring to him as “a gem in our industry.”

“I predict a great hospitality future for him,” Davis said.

In addition to his role at the Hard Rock, Bell also serves as a member of the Halifax Area Advertising Authority board of directors, the county-appointed board that oversees and funds the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau through county bed tax collections generated by occupancy at hotels and other lodging.

Bell is currently chair of the HAAA board, serving a term that runs through May 2025.

"Androse Bell has been a strong leader in the hotel industry in this community," said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area CVB. "He is an amazing HAAA board member and has provided thoughtful leadership as our chair."

Baker said on Tuesday that she hasn't yet heard from Bell about his future plans.

"Androse is bright and talented, and we look forward to hearing what his next opportunity is, which will hopefully be in the Halifax area," she said.

In Daytona Beach, Bell, who was 30 when he took the helm at Hard Rock , represented a homegrown success story. He returned to leadership roles in the hotel industry to build on a foundation provided by the hospitality management program at Bethune-Cookman University, where he graduated in 2011.

He completed an MBA in Marketing in 2013 at Keiser University in Daytona Beach.

“I have always been great with numbers, analyzing data,” Bell said in an interview with The News-Journal shortly after starting at the Hard Rock in 2018. “Then, at some point, I found I had an interest in people. Something in me loves making people happy, loves making people smile. This just seemed like a good way to merge the two.”

Although he did attend college in Daytona Beach, playing running back for four years on Bethune-Cookman’s football team, Bell and his younger sisters were raised by a single mother in Palm Bay in Brevard County. After graduation from Palm Bay High School in 2006, he moved to Daytona Beach.

At Bethune-Cookman, Bell was motivated by professors such as Andrea White-McNeil and Ruth Smith, among others who wouldn’t accept less than his best, he said.

“They wouldn’t accept any of my excuses — ’There was a football game’ or ‘I have girlfriend trouble,’” Bell said in 2018. “They kept pushing me and they let me know that if I kept pushing, I’d be a success in life. It worked for me.”

Working his way up the ranks, Bell hailed as 'future industry superstar'

In addition, Bell developed career skills under the supervision of one of the area’s key hotel managers, and worked his way through the ranks at one of Volusia County’s most renowned beachfront hotels.

In Melbourne Beach, Bell worked as a manager at the 207-room DoubleTree Suites by Hilton for two years starting in the summer of 2015. He was recruited for that job by the hotel’s general manager, Jim Berkley, now in the same role at the 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, the area’s largest hotel.

“Androse had an incredible charisma about him that was a mixture of intelligence, patience and a genuine relatable attitude with every team member he encountered,” Berkley said in 2018. “I knew he was going to be a future industry superstar the moment we shook hands and met for the first time.”

Before arriving at the Hard Rock, Bell also worked from 2011 to 2015 at the 212-room Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach Shores. There, he rose in the ranks from reservations sales coordinator to director of rooms, a job that involved direction of the hotel’s front office, valet and bell services, housekeeping and reservations.
