You might also include the NuCamp tear drops – Tab 320 clamshell or shower and the Tab 400 teardrop with full shower and toilet. These are a little shorter than the Little Guy Max.

Also Rove UltraLite 14FD (bare bones but very affordable)…and a little larger but still smallest for it manufacturer: the plush Lance 1475 with full bath-shower, sink cabinet and toilet.

RV Bathroom Ideas: 21 mind blowing RV bathroom renovations

Gathering RV bathroom ideas is one of my favorite things to do, since way before renovating our RV. Because there is so much impact that you can make with that tiny little space that RV has for bathrooms! So today I wanted to share some inspiration and also some of my favorite bathroom products!

Remodeling an RV bathroom is no small task even when the spaces are (most of the time) very small. So today I want to cover some information and inspiration to help you with your remodel.

RV Bathroom ideas for Remodels (Basics)

When remodeling a bathroom, the size of the bathroom and area you have to work with on the counter will make a huge difference when selecting alternatives for the accessories.

In our case, I really wanted to go with a faucet that didn’t look like an RV faucet and a countertop sink, but because of the size of the counter, I was limited to sticking with an RV bathroom sink.

And since I was already going with an RV sink, I just decided to find a cool finishing (bronze rubbed oil) in an RV bathroom faucet.

Why am I sharing this? Because our camper is pretty small BUT if you have a 5th wheel or toy hauler, you might be able to use regular house sinks, faucets, and other bathroom accessories .

Pretty cool huh?

So, I wanted to share some alternatives in both cases.

If you are planning on using a regular house sink or faucet, just make sure that you keep track of the weight, since sometimes some sinks can get pretty heavy.

My plan was to remove the cabinet on the top of our bathroom counter if I could get the sink I wanted, in order to make up for the weight but since I stuck with light RV accessories, I kept the medicine cabinet and only painted it.

As I mentioned, I wanted to provide two sets of options, the first one, in case you want to stick to RV sinks. In our case, the sink and faucet had to go because they were not just yellow and gross, but they were also a very cheap upgrade. For about $45 we could replace both, so if you want to splurge with the kitchen faucet and sink, adding an RV bathroom sink might be the best option for you too.

But of course, if you have space, and the wiggle room in the weight you have taken away from your RV remodel, being able to install a regular sink can be the perfect alternative for you. What I like the most about being able to add a regular bathroom sink to an RV remodel is that they can be so impactful in the overall look of the tiny bathroom.

No matter the option you select, one thing that you need to check is the connections, my husband had to make multiple trips to the hardware store just because the fittings in our RV were a little funky, but thankfully we were able to get all the parts we needed without having to find an RV parts place.

But of course, I also had to share some super cool “regular” options that are not too heavy and that will bring your remodel to a whole new level.

I know that the toilets are the less “cute” thing to worry about when it comes to an RV bathroom renovation, but it’s definitely something you want to consider switching no matter the state of your RV (if you are remodeling a pre-owned RV)

Of course, if it’s not bad looking, you can always get away with a VERY deep cleaning and sanitizing of the toilet. But for the price that most toilets run, I think it’s a great idea to update it when possible.

If you have a bigger camper, 5th wheel, or toy hauler, you might be able to get away with having a porcelain toilet, we have a couple of friends that decided to splurge on price and weight there.

Also, if you are on the other end, and you have a small camper, like a teardrop camper , a pop-up camper , or a van, you might need something smaller or portable , so I still wanted to include some great options for portable toilets.

No matter the route you go with your toilet, we need to talk about the elephant in the room, the very smelly elephant!

The very first time we took our RV out of our regular spot at my husband’s family ranch, we went to the desert, 108 degrees for a week straight. OH! MY! The smells! And with 3 boys flushing the toilet multiple times an hour (it might have been less, but that’s what it felt like!

I was quickly forced to do my research and find something that could tame that elephant.

This bathroom remodel from Lee and Candance Rutter is a great example of how impactful a small change can be, they left the sink and updated the top of their bathroom by taking the cabinet away and adding a peel and stick backsplash , a gold oval mirror , and new lights. The change is so wonderful.

5 Jory Zusmer from @jorydesig

I love the soft boho vibes of Jory’s RV renovation, if you like her bathroom, you should definitely check the rest of the RV, she will have it for rent in October 2020. She added lines on the walls with a sharpie to create a faux shiplap look. I am in love with the rattan mirror and the farmhouse touches in the decor, she shared that most of the things in the picture were from Hobby Lobby, but I found some similar items that I am listing below in case you are as in love as I am.

I am obsessed with that wood edge mirror ! Below I am sharing another that has a completely different feel, but that is also so lovely!

Wow, I love the RV bath makeovers. Do they drive their RV’s. The shelving doesn’t have rack holders. All are beautiful. But I go boondocking alot. Shake Rattle and Roll. I just redid my bath, basic remodel from brown cabinets and blue Formica to white with black handles and a marble countertop (contact paper). Hope my grammar is correct. Not all of us leaned proper grammar in school.

Hi Dulcie, I am not 100% sure, I am guessing it would depend on the kind of tub you have and if you can find a deeper one that would fit there, it will just have to be taller though, since you really can't cut into your flooring like you would in a brick and sticks house =]

You actually do not need to have a conversion kit for the light fixtures, what we did for our Camper was to use 12V light bulbs. I have them listed in my post about our renovation just in case =]

Joy, I'm wondering if you use spell check and proof your articles before you send them out. For example, do you mean that 'white and clack' should be 'white and black '? There are others I'll let you discover. I don't normally write comments but it bothers me a lot that there are so many grammatical errors in so many of the articles I read that I finally felt the need to express my thoughts. I am very impressed with the content and information you have taken the time to share. Please do not let anyone discourage your efforts. You are an inspiration for not only people who are looking for ideas, but for others who may need an idea how they could learn to improve their use of another language. Keep doing what you enjoy!

Thank you for pointing that out. You might not know this, but I am a self-taught English speaker, Spanish is my mother tongue and I actually started blogging to improve my English.

Once, I let people that bombarded my main blog saying that I should not share anything online if I didn't have proper grammar, bring me down to the point that I actually stopped blogging for a few years. And even though I have a master's degree I was put down as an uneducated person and targeted by a small online forum, heavily ridiculized because of my accent and my writing.

So while I appreciate that you let me know about the errors in my blog, you could have emailed me and let me know this in a personal way.

I know that there will be errors, if my spell check won't catch them, there will be there.

This blog is a hobby for me and something I do for fun and love, if you can't see past the grammatical mistakes, and can't appreciate the effort that I put into collecting and creating all this information, I am sorry but I don't think this is the right place for you because no matter how much effort I put into it, it will never be perfect.

Helen Mills is a British transplant who lives in British Columbia and is an incredible renovator! You can just look at that before and after the shot.

Although it took a lot of work, nothing about the RV bathroom redo was expensive or extensive.

The main visual differences are due to several coats of paint, the removal of the cabinet doors, and the installation of the backsplashes. There is a new RV toilet that she bought.

Bearfoot Theory’s Big (Little) Renovation

The founder of Bearfoot Theory is a person who is a camper, hiker, adventurer, and outdoorsy person.

She lives in a tiny 44 Mercedes Sprinter, which she completely renovated back in 2015. Is there one of the most impressive parts of the upgrade?

There is a cramped spot in the bathroom in camper vans like hers.

She made her wet/dry compartment look inviting and relaxing by using a minimalist design with beautiful wood floors and a tile backsplash.

She put wall hooks in the space so she could use it as a storage closet when not in use. I think it’s clever, right?

The Litts Keep it Lit

As they go, the Litts are making big changes in their camper with their dog and husband. Their RV bathroom is gorgeous and has been freshly redesigned.

Adding simple accessories, like a built-in shelf and a new toilet paper holder, and installing wood panel walls open up the space and make the camper window look more like an RV bathroom. Great job all around, you are a great person.

An Incredible Camper Bathroom

Brittany Lauren is the person behind Brittany Lauren creates, where she writes about all of her creative adventures.

She spent two years as a full-time RVer and completely renovated her rig, also known as #montethecamper.

There are little details that make a big difference. The RV bathroom sink is the same, but the countertop has been refinished and she took some paint to the RV bathroom cabinets.

She made an adorable accessory holder by attaching a towel bar to the back of the house. Brilliant!

Fiddy States’ Full-on Fix-It

The minds behind the Fiddy States are Megan and Drikus, and they documented their six-month journey through all fifty states.

They flew to Hawaii to finish the adventure after buying a fifth wheel and truck to take on Alaska. They did a great job with restoring their trailer.

They redecorated the kitchen, installed new floors, and painted the walls as part of the “grand RV renovation.

They completely redecorated their tiny pocket camper bathroom, opening up the small space with the addition of a bigger bathroom mirror and a few simple wall decorations.

Megan and Drikus, you did a wonderful job!

Why Remodel Your RV’s Bathroom?

Depending on the size of your rig, you may have three or four rooms that you can work on for a remodel, most of which you probably spend more time in than your bathroom.

Why did you go to your bathroom? In the RV, the bathroom is the smallest space. It should take less work, that’s what it means.

It would take more effort to mess with plumbing which could be problematic. It is easier to make a big impact on a small room with a few smaller changes.

Things to Consider When Remodeling Your RV’s Bathroom

An RV is a different animal, whether you are a pro or just new to it. The majority of things are the same, but you will only be working in cramped spaces.

If you are worried about claustrophobia, it might not be for you. Adding tile or replacing a sink in your bathroom can add weight to your rig, another consideration.

That will affect your gas mileage in a small way, as you will be hauling more with you.

Put in a Tile Backsplash or Wall

A bright tile backsplash makes your bathroom look more residential, and it also acts as a statement piece.

It takes a little practice to get used to tile, but you can put it up in a matter of minutes.

It is easy to find one that fits the look and style you are going for with your redesign because tile comes in a variety of sizes and styles.

Replace Your Cabinets

Storage is everything in an RV, and bathroom storage can be a little more precious. There may be only one or two cabinets you are dealing with.

Depending on your rig, they may not be a particularly good set of cabinets, which makes it relatively easy to upgrade them.

It’s a good idea to find a style that you like, then install it away.

Hang a New Mirror

This one is not that complicated at all. There are RV mirrors that are not always stylish. Medicine cabinets from a 90s home improvement store are often what they look like.

The bathroom today has many sleek mirrors, be they round or angular. A new mirror can give you a better look at yourself, and change a space completely.

Paint or Wallpaper Your Walls

Not a particularly difficult project, painting or wallpapering your walls can transform a space, as you probably know from having painted your house or apartment.

It is the same principle that applies in your RV. Adding color, style, and texture to the space with wallpaper is another great way to do it.

Add Shelving

The majority of RVs have some kind of furniture. It is possible to make a cramped bathroom feel more spacious with open shelves.

They are easy to install, with a couple of brackets and good boards.

While you are in transit, you may need to find alternate storage options, but a couple of small, collapsible boxes will do the trick.

Replace the Sink

This one is serious, pretty serious. Changing the faucet is not the only thing that needs to be done. Changing the sink is not the only thing that can be done.

Dealing with plumbing is one of the things that means that. You might be able to have a residential-style sink if you have a big tow-behind, fifth-wheel, or coach.

That opens an entirely new world of sinks that you can put in your rig, from bowls to under mounts and many more.

Install a New Shower Head or Faucet

You won’t have many options for an upgrade if you are in a small RV.

You may be able to install a residential-style faucet if you are in a pull-behind, fifth-wheel, or Class A, B, or C.

A little trial and error can get you a sleek new faucet and a much more comfortable shower head.

8 Amazing DIY Teardrop Trailer Kits & Campers

The throwback appeal of teardrop campers is alive and well. Building one yourself is a hardy salute to the trailer’s earliest days — and your badassery.

The first teardrop trailers popped up in the 1930s and flourished in the time after World War II, when optimistic Americans were ready for easy, open-road vacations.

Improved highway systems in the 1940s and beyond made it easier for travelers to reach new places — what Jack Kerouac called the “great raw bulge and bulk of my American continent.”

Lightweight teardrops made towing a cinch, even with small vehicles. But like many things American, the bigger is better mantra took hold in the following decades. Larger, spacious motorhomes like Winnebagos soon replaced the quaint teardrop.

Today, teardrop campers enjoy a nostalgic, if small, niche in the RV world. A handful of custom workshops make more expensive, polished trailers ( Timberleaf , wassup), but the DIY teardrop still holds its place in the American road trip ethos.

Here’s a look at 8 teardrop camper kits, plans and instructions to make your own trailer at a fraction of the cost of buying a new one or investing in a vintage model.

1. The Handmade Teardrop Trailer

Some teardrop plans floating around are shoddy, hard to follow and never as clear as you’d like. This isn’t the case with Matt Berger’s The Handmade Teardrop Trailer , a beautifully illustrated guidebook to creating one of the best lookin’ DIY teardrops we’ve seen.

Berger walks through the process with clear instructions, helpful photos and advice on how to avoid mistakes that can plague custom DIY builds. From asking the right questions to choosing the best structure for your base and frame, The Handmade Teardrop Trailer covers everything you need to start your project.

On Berger’s site, you’ll find a trailer Hall of Fame for ideas on how to use his plans to create your dream teardrop model. He also offers additional info on the process, like how to create a prototype before you tackle the real thing.

2. Wyoming Woody Plans

Ryan, the founder of Teardrop Builder, spent more than 2 years planning, designing and constructing his original Wyoming Woody teardrop. His next move? Release the plans for free on his website as a thank you to the “wonderful teardrop community who offered advice or techniques” during his build.

The Wyoming Woody’s classic 1950s shape and build is iconic, and though it’s DIY, it certainly doesn’t look the part. Many of the campers featured on Ryan’s site look as polished and put-together as custom pre-built teardrops that cost thousands of dollars more.

These are some of the most clear, helpful instructions on building a teardrop you can find. If you get a chance, check out all the success stories and comments scattered around Teardrop Builder.

3. CLC Teardrop Camper Kit

Virginia-based Chesapeake Light Craft has made high-end small boat kits since the early 1990s , and their foray into the teardrop market is a bold departure from the typical canned-ham style of many small trailers.

CLC offers a number of configurations and options to keep your costs in check, and extra features like a roof rack or rooftop vents make your teardrop as comfortable and versatile as you need.

Few teardrop kits get as much press coverage as this bad boy (Outside Magazine, GearJunkie, Tiny House Talk, the list goes on). One look at the sleek silhouette and you’ll see why.

4. Purdy Adventure Teardrop Kit

Purdy’s already-built teardrops clock in under $10,000, but to save even more money, they offer turnkey kits with everything you need to build one yourself. The kit includes a rolling chassis and all the exterior and interior materials for trailers sized 4′ x 8′ to 5′ x 10′.

Their Adventure Teardrop is a classically designed canned ham-style camper with plenty of room to relax, organize camp supplies and enjoy extended trips on the road. Lighting and window upgrades can add to the ambiance, but the trailer’s basic features will be more than enough for the self-sufficient camper.

5. Kuffel Creek Teardrop Plans

Kuffel Creek is all about two things: apples and teardrop trailers. This apple nursery out of Riverside offers teardrop plans for three models: their Benroy, Cubby and Comet. The Benroy’s a unique boxy number with a fun history, and the other two offer varying degrees of space and comfort.

After selling thousands of plans worldwide for years, Kuffel Creek considers themselves the “gold standard” for teardrop camper plans and their brag photos are an unquestionable testimony to the work they’ve inspired.

The estimated cost to build their models is between $2,000 and $3,000 depending on the camper, though there’s plenty of improvisation you can do to customize a teardrop to your liking and budget.

6. Big Woody Teardrop Campers

At Big Woody you’ll find fully built campers, teardrop kits and plans to make your own. Their plans are affordable and the kits are a steal: the ultimate teardrop kit costs right around $900, compared to the $9,000 – $13,000 base prices of their built campers.

The kits are broken up into different packages, making it easy to choose exactly what you need. They also offer plenty of accessories, parts and equipment to make life on the road a breeze.

7. The Teardroppers Kits & Plans

The Teardroppers offers kits and plans for every type of DIYer, from the camper who wants to start from scratch (check out the $29 video guide ) to those looking for pre-cut materials.

They estimate the cost of a built trailer to be $1,800 to $2,100, including the kit, chassis, various parts and adjustments you make to your teardrop. These are basic but practical trailers that offer lightweight space and comfort on a budget.

8. The Teardrop Trailer Free Guide

It’s hard to find on their site, but this Canada-based company offers a free detailed guide to building a teardrop from the chassis up. They go over all the basics, from choosing a trailer and base to framing the trailer and wiring the electronics.

It may not be the most detailed plan out there, but for campers looking to get free insight into the process, it’s a solid place to start. They also offer a small but helpful forum for beginners and seasoned teardrop pros.

How to do an Incredible RV Bathroom Remodel for under $1,000

If you are interested in doing an RV bathroom remodel or RV bathroom renovation we’ve got several simple DIY makeover ideas that are sure to turn your camper or trailer into your home on the road! 

Although we had been RVing full-time for nearly 3 years when we decided to sell our truck camper and purchase a larger Class C motorhome, we didn’t really have any idea how to remodel an RV . 

Through various trials on the road, we learned how to fix virtually every appliance inside our camper. Bumpy roads tend to shake things loose and many RVs are not built for full-time occupation. 

So we knew the basics of how to fix older, broken things inside our RV. And because our first camper was over 15 years old, we also knew the kind of simple comforts and modern look and feel that we would like in our next RV. 

But because we live on so little, our budget did not afford us the option of buying a new, bright and shiny RV. And when we finally found our perfect new home on the road, it was actually 5 years older than the one we had just sold! 

So we knew we would have our hands full with the RV remodel of our 1999 Shasta Cheyenne . At 31 feet with the classic motorhome layout, we had nearly 3 times the living space than we were used to with our truck camper. 

When it comes to completing an RV bathroom remodel, there are three primary appliances around which you’ll need to make the most important decisions: the RV shower, RV bathroom sink and faucet and RV toilet. 

We’ll cover these first in this post and then get into all of the other projects you can undertake in your bathroom renovation.  

And we’ll share the price breakdown for how we spent under $1,000 for all of these renovations!

How to Complete a DIY RV Bathroom Remodel for Under $1,000

No camper bathroom renovation is complete without addressing the shower, sink and faucet and toilet. Whether you remodel all of these fixtures or choose to take on just one or two is up to you. 

Here’s what we did in completely overhauling our entire RV bathroom. 

A NOTE ON TOOLS AND MATERIALS: We purchased a power toolset prior to beginning our entire RV remodel so we are listing tools to use but not including them in the price as we assume you will have a toolset before you begin your RV bathroom remodel. Additionally, we balanced the sourcing of our materials between Amazon and our local home improvement store. So items we list with Amazon links may be easier to source locally, but we still want you to see and know what we are talking about.

RV Shower (~$200)

When we first started our remodel, our RV shower was much like most camper showers. The shower lining had become a dingy yellow. The standard RV faucet and the showerhead were cracked and leaking. 

And the shower itself was framed in with a weary gold-painted metal enclosed with heavy frosted glass. The entire RV shower was dated – over 20 years at that! 

We wanted to build a new cedar shower in its place with a modern look and feel that would combine elements of rustic and industrial aesthetics. 

So the first thing we did was to take it apart. Several screws held the frame to the wall and then it was a matter of just taking it apart frame by frame, minding the fact we did not want to shatter the glass in the process. 

We stripped the shower down to just the shell, and cut loose the carpet and heater vent that was attached to its base. 

Tools and Materials Needed: 

Then we painted the shell with Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile epoxy resin. Not only did this immediately give the shower lining a bright new life, but also it sealed any areas that were beginning to crack or wear with age. 

First, we sanded the rough edges along the side of the shower where the frame left screw holes. Then we painted all of the walls and the base of the shower so that it was one seamless new shower shell.

Then became the work of framing the new RV shower we wanted to build. We started at the base just outside of the base of the shower itself and had to create a unique shape using pieces of 2x4s that enabled us to make the framing easier. 

Then we cut a short, rectangular piece of 2×6 cedar for each side of the shower that would lay flat over the base and cover the existing edge of the shower shell. 

The idea was that we wanted any water that came in contact with this board to drip entirely into the shower pan rather than into a crack between the shower pan and our foundation. 

Now that the base was built, we decided how tall we wanted to make the shower walls and built a rectangular frame for each side using 2x4s. We opted to leave one side taller than the other. 

But the tallest side was no more than 40 inches so it left a nice open view both in and out of the shower. 

With the framing done we went to work cutting a bunch of 2×4 cedar planks that would be stacked and nailed vertically up the sides of the shower. These were quick and easy to cut and install using a nail gun because we carefully framed the shower ahead of time. 

One of our shower walls was enclosed on the outside by our sink vanity so we only had to add cedar planks to the inside of this side of the shower. We also added a vertical cedar plank on the outside of both sides of the shower as well as the top. 

Next, we measured and cut two 2×4 boards that would serve as the side mounts from where the shower stall ended to the ceiling of the RV. We stained these a dark brown to match other wood throughout our camper. Then we secured them to the wall to be the base of our shower curtain rod. 

• 2x4x8′ wood (4)
• 2x6x8′ wood (1)
• 1x4x8′ cedar wood (4)
• 1x6x8′ cedar wood (1)
• Various wood screws
• Nailgun and 1″ brad nails

The rod itself was made of one long ½” copper pipe that we cut to various lengths. We screwed a cast iron pipe flange to the top of each of the stained boards that would hold the shower curtain rod horizontally to the wall, and one to the top of one side of the shower for a vertical copper rod to hold the rest of the shower curtain rod in place. 

From here, we simply measured appropriate lengths of copper pipe, cut them to size and then connected all of the pieces together using various copper elbows and t-joints. 

• 1/2″ diameter x 10 feet copper pipe
• Copper pipe cutter
• Cast Iron Pipe Flanges (3)
• Tee Fitting
• 45 degree elbow (2)

At this point, all that was left to do was to waterproof the shower. Although cedar is particularly water-resistant, it is not waterproof. So we used Waterlox to seal every cedar edge that would be exposed to water. 

Then we used waterproof silicone caulk to line the edges of the inside of the shower where the cedar met the shower lining. 

When this was done, all we needed to do was to choose the best shower curtain, shower curtain liner and rings to hang the shower curtain! We also replaced the old showerhead with our favorite Oxygenics showerhead both as an update and an improvement in water efficiency.

RV Bathroom Sink & Faucet (~$200)

The next major project we completed in our RV bathroom remodel was to address the old RV bathroom sink and faucet. 

When we purchased our RV we knew that the old faucet had a leak. But as it was dated already, we planned to replace it along with the sink and countertop to keep with our rustic-industrial theme. 

We planned to install a beautiful vessel sink with a modern residential faucet that sat on a new butcher block counter. 

To do this we had to disconnect the existing plumbing to the faucet and drain. Then we unscrewed the clips that held the sink to the counter and the screws that held the countertop in place. 

When everything was disconnected we broke the old parts away from the cabinet base below leaving an open space that looked straight down upon the p-trap and hot and cold water lines. 

To rebuild the RV bathroom sink and faucet, we started by finding a piece of butcher block countertop that would fit the dimensions of our previous counter. We had a large block leftover from our kitchen remodel. 

But as it worked out there was a singular piece we were able to purchase that was at the exact dimensions of what we needed. 

We sealed the wood using Watco’s clear butcherblock oil , which both brought out the natural colors of the butcherblock and made it waterproof. Then we set it in place and screwed it to the wall from underneath to hold it in place. 

Next, we drilled a hole into the center of the counter at the dimensions set forth in our sink’s manual, aligning both with where we wanted the sink to rest and with the existing plumbing beneath. Our hope was that we did not have to move the plumbing at all which, in our case, we didn’t. 

Once the hole was cut we added silicone to the base of the sink to create a solid seal once we pressed it in place around the hole. We then assembled the sink according to its instructions and the drain fit perfectly into the existing P-trap so we did not have to alter it. 

On the other hand, adding the faucet itself required a little more work. First, we cut a hole in the counter that allowed us to fit the faucet in place. This particular faucet had its hot and cold water inlet hoses dangle beneath a cylindrical shaft that sort of wedged itself in place inside the hole we cut. 

However, these inlet hoses were too long to meet up with the existing pipes. As the plumbing was done with Pex, we measured (twice!) and cut the Pex piping back before adding a female Sharkbite adapter to each pipe. 

We taped each male end of the faucet hoses with plumbers tape and quickly screwed them into place. When this was done we tightened the mount from the underside of the counter that held the faucet in place. 

At this point, all that was left to do was to check for leaks. We turned the water pump on and opened the faucet and sure enough, everything worked as it should! 

When we knew that everything was in its right place we used silicone caulk to waterproof the edges of the counter where it met with the wall on each of its 3 enclosed sides and this finished the job entirely!

The final major project in our RV bathroom remodel was deciding what to do about our RV toilet. We had a standard plumbed RV toilet in the RV when we began the remodeling. 

But as with the faucet, there was a leak in the plumbing to the toilet. Further, when we were adding vinyl plank flooring to the area around the base of the toilet we accidentally knocked the toilet over and cracked it. 

So we were faced with the option of purchasing a new RV plumbed toilet to put exactly in place of this one, or to invest in a composting toilet. Because we boondock frequently, we’ve wanted a composting toilet for years to cut down both on our water use and black water waste collection. 

But the Nature’s Head composting toilet was out of our price range. So we studied how to build a composting toilet and decided we would build our own to occupy the empty space the broken toilet left behind. 

First, we capped the water input with a Sharkbite cap and the black tank with a corresponding plastic cap. Then we set out to frame the toilet in the design and function we wanted. 

The toilet itself would be standard height. But we wanted to have a hinged storage shelf next to the toilet for our composting shavings, spray bottles and bag storage. 

So we framed out the space using 2x4s and ¾” plywood cut to appropriate dimensions. Because we were building our toilet custom to our space there were no exact models for us to follow. So we measured and cut precisely as we needed to build out the frame of the toilet. 

Then we cut the 4 cover pieces of the toilet. We had one long strip along the back that would be permanently secured so that the hinges could be mounted for the movable lids. 

And there were 2 matching pieces for each side of the toilet. One we would permanently mount as it would not be lifted due to the fact our toilet paper holder would be in the way of lifting. 

The other would be on a hinge that would lift to provide access to the 3-cubby storage space beneath. Finally, the largest piece was the center, which we would have to cut and mount the toilet seat. 

For the toilet seat, we purchased a standard toilet seat and laid it on the board where it would be. We traced the inside hole and cut the hole such that the toilet fit perfectly. Then we drilled holes in the plywood accordingly to screw the seat into place. 

Initially, we attached our urine diverter to the underside of the toilet. But we realized that because we wanted to plumb the diverter to our black tank, anytime we lifted the cover to empty our compost the diverter hose would have to lift up and down as well. 

Eventually, we figured, the hose would come out and we’d be faced with our urine entering our RV and not the tank! 

So we cut another small piece of plywood on which to mount the diverter such that it rests permanently beneath the toilet seat. This way when we changed composting bags the diverter stayed in place. 

We attached a hose of an appropriate length to run to the black tank and cut as small a hole as necessary in the black tank cap to accommodate running this hose into the black tank. 

We also added a plastic container beneath the toilet to act as a second barrier in the event of a “spill.” We built a little trash bag holder that would sit in the plastic bin and meet up with the diverter such that no waste of any kind would go outside of either the diverter or the bag. 

With the underneath part of the composting toilet complete, all that was left to do was to use a hinge to attach the movable lids to the permanent mounting strip of plywood at the back of the toilet. 

Then, for good measure, we painted the plywood with the same epoxy resin from the shower in such a way as to make the cleaning process easier. 

When the inside and top of the toilet were complete we framed the front using cedar boards to match the look and feel of the shower.

Other DIY RV Bathroom Makeover Ideas

Aside from these three major projects, we did a lot of other little DIY projects to spruce up the camper bathroom even more. 

Painting Everything (Under $100)

Before we started building anything in the entire RV remodel we first painted the walls in every room a light grey. And all cabinets and doors were finished in a bright white. This lighter color opened up each and every room, particularly in the bathroom. 

First, we took off everything that was mounted to the wall. We went back with wood filler and filled in all of the holes and then sanded these down when it dried. 

Next, we sanded each surface using Liquid Sandpaper. This was a quick and relatively easy process of simply wetting a cloth with the Liquid Sandpaper and running it on the surface. Because it was so quick and painless we did two coats of sanding before we set out to prime the walls and cabinets. 

For priming, we used a spray gun to paint two coats of Kilz primer on each wall, cabinet and door. Because the primer was significantly less expensive than the paint we were using we decided that it would be more cost-effective to put on two coats of primer rather than two coats of paint. 

As it turned out, we needed that extra coat because both the white primer and the grey paint were so light that the old wood-stained walls would have shown through with only one coat of each.

Although the spray gun did a decent job with priming the walls, we made sure to trim the corners and edges by hand with a paintbrush. 

We also primed each of the 5 bathroom cabinet doors. Prior to this, we removed all of the hinges and other hardware. While they were off, we painted these black using Rustoleum spray paint.  

After the priming was done throughout the RV bathroom, we began painting. Because we had issues at the very end with our paint gun we decided to paint everything by hand using paintbrushes and rollers. 

This took more time. But in the end, it was a much higher quality finish and we only had to apply one coat of paint to each surface. 

After the paint dried, we also added new black pulls to each cabinet door to give it a nice contrast to the lighter colors on the walls and cabinets. 

We reinstalled the freshly painted black hardware and mounted the cabinet doors back in place in every place except the sink cabinet, which we were going to need to access for plumbing the new sink and faucet.

Vinyl Plank Flooring (Under $100)

After painting the interior of the RV we also added vinyl plank flooring throughout the entire living space. The previous flooring was a disjointed mixture of carpet in the living room, vinyl tile flooring in the bathroom and then back to the carpet in the bedroom. 

So after ripping up the carpet and vinyl tiles we laid down a water-resistant vinyl plank flooring we purchased from our favorite home improvement store. It was hard to determine how much of the flooring actually went into the RV bathroom renovation. But it was no more than 1.5 boxes. 

The hardest part of the flooring was cutting the many angles that curved around the base of the shower and toilet. For the toilet, we actually removed the previous RV-style plumbed toilet and covered the black tank hole in order to properly cut vinyl plank flooring to go around the toilet. 

In this way, when we reinstalled the toilet the flooring was seamless. Although, as you know by now, we ended up building our own composting toilet over all of the vinyl plank flooring that is now covered up by the toilet. 

Vinyl plank flooring clips together and can be lightly tapped with a hammer (best to use a piece of cloth or a scrap of wood between the hammer and the plank). For any cuts, you will need to make you can use either a standard box cutter to score the plank and then snap it along the score, or you can invest in a vinyl floor cutting tool.

Skylight & Vent Fan Replacement (~$150)

The existing bathroom skylight had either been painted black or had turned black with time, thus defeating the purpose of the skylight itself. While we were on the roof switching out Fan-Tastic Fans in the bedroom we went ahead and replaced the skylight as well. 

This was more expensive than we thought it would be. But it was a great replacement to invite full light back into the bathroom. 

We didn’t purchase a new vent fan for the bathroom, however. Instead, we purchased a nice, new, 3-speed, multi-directional Fan-Tastic vent fan for the bedroom and moved the existing fan from the bedroom to the bathroom. 

The existing bathroom fan was the cheapest you could find in 1999. The one we moved from the bedroom wasn’t much better. But it saved us a few hundred more dollars we could have spent in replacing it entirely.

Replacing the skylight cover was quick and easy as all the work was done on the roof. Simply remove the screws holding the existing cover in place. This will allow you to pull the top skylight cover off of the skylight itself. 

We left the plastic skylight in place and simply slid the new cover on top of the skylight and matched up the screw holes. Before we screwed it in place we put a layer of 1” wide butyl tape all around the skylight to form a barrier between the skylight and the roof. 

Then we screwed new screws into the roof to secure the existing skylight and the new cover in place. With the cover secure, we dabbed some Dicor self-leveling lap sealant over the tops of the screws to prevent water from sneaking in. 

For an extra layer of protection, we put a layer of Eternabond tape around the edges and covered the screws. And to finish things off, we added a few dabs of Dicor self-leveling sealant around the edges of the tape to ensure water had no path inside the RV.

Paint Ceiling Covers (Under $10)

While we were moving fans and skylights around we decided to brighten up the dreary yellowed ceiling covers in the RV bathroom and throughout the rest of the RV.

This included both the ducted air conditioning vent covers as well as the fan and skylight covers. 

To do this we simply sprayed a bright white spray paint over the plastic and let it dry. The covers were easy to take off and reinstall. And the bright color they added back into the room brought new life to the old bathroom. 

Swap Out LED lights In Every Fixture (Under $10)

Swapping out old incandescent light bulbs for these LED bulbs is a simple task in an RV bathroom remodel. It not only adds more light to the room but also saves you power in your battery bank. 

We used these bulbs because the light fixtures we had still looked and worked fine. Although at one point, we did consider removing the fixtures to add recessed lighting. 

DIY Towel Holders (Under $30)

RVs are notorious for the cheap, clear plastic towel holders that not only take up space but look horrific in any recent RV bathroom remodel. So rather than simply reinstall the old ones we took down before painting, we decided to build our own. 

In the end, we build two different kinds that provided us plenty of room to hang our towels and other wet clothing. One type we composed our of a wooden dowel and metal clamps and the other type was done with the same wooden dowel and some dowel screws. 

Both were quite simple to build and added a unique, rustic look to the bathroom. 

Metal / Dowel Towel Holder (Under $20)

Although you can buy these wall brackets already assembled and save yourself a little time, we wanted the full DIY experience. 

So we took a piece of threaded steel rod and cut 2 pieces to the length we wanted (approximately 1”) for the distance it would hold the dowel from the wall. Then we painted it black alongside the wall bracket. 

Next, we cut a ½” diameter wood dowel to 18” to fit the wall of our bathroom. We stained it dark brown to match the look and feel throughout the RV bathroom and the rest of the camper. Then we simply assembled all of the pieces together and mounted them to the wall.

Wood Dowel Towel Holder (Under $10)

An even simpler DIY project, these towel holders require only a short piece of wood dowel cut to your desired length and a 2-sided dowel screw. 

To make these, we recommend using a thicker dowel of at least 1” in diameter. Stain the dowel to the color you prefer. Then you will cut it into the shorter pieces that will be mounted to the wall and act like a “hook” on which to hang towels, clothes or other items. 

We measured our towel holders to be approximately 3 inches in length. But before you cut, note that you will want to cut the dowel at an angle (at approximately 30 degrees) in order for the dowel to face upwards when mounted to the wall. If you cut it flat then it will just stick straight off the wall and not too much good! 

Once the dowels are cut, use a drill and bit just smaller than the thickness of the dowel screws you plan to use. We used 5/16” diameter by 1 ½ “ dowel screws. Screw into the cut end of the dowel screw at a right angle to the cut, but make sure not to push the bit through the side of the dowel. 

Then use pliers to hold the dowel screw and thread the wood dowel onto the screw (it’s easier this way than the other way around!). Next, drill a lead hole into the wall or surface where you want to mount the towel holder. 

Finally, twist the exposed end of the dowel screw into the wall until the dowel is facing up and is snug to the wall. 

Make as many of these as you would like as they are cheap, simple to make and do a great job of holding all sorts of things throughout your RV – from towels, keys, hats to virtually anything else you’d normally hang on a wall!

DIY Toilet Paper Holder (Under $15)

One final DIY project we did in our RV bathroom remodel was to build our own toilet paper holder in the same style as the rest of our bathroom. To do this we used the same exact tools and materials as the metal/dowel towel holder. 

However, instead of having two wall brackets to secure both ends of the dowel to the wall we just used one. This way we could easily add the next roll of toilet paper to the holder. 

Follow the same steps to cut the steel rod, paint all the metal and stain the wooden dowel. Then cut the dowel to size using a standard toilet paper roll as reference. From there you just put all the pieces together and screw it to the wall. 

Note, in our case, the wall we were screwing the paper towel holder into was so thin that we actually used another thin board to spread the weight of the towel holder and allow us to mount it easier. If you are mounting into solid wood you will not have to do this.

Final Touches & Decor

Since we had the major projects for our RV bathroom remodel completed it was time for some final touches and personal decor. Lindsay is a plant fanatic, so we keep a few plants around the shower. Not only do they look nice, but also they get ample sunlight through our new skylight. 

We also took up empty wall space by hanging one of Lindsay’s favorite photographs that she’s ever taken on the wall. It is an image of Antelope Canyon and the colors contrast with the wall and composting toilet giving it the perfect home in our RV bathroom. 

We prefer to use our own artwork in our camper. But of course, this option is up to you for how you want to add the final touches and decor to your RV bathroom renovation. 

But whatever you do, and however you do it, we’re certain that you will be pleased when you get to the finish line and see the great work you have done to transform your camper bathroom into one that looks like anything you’d see on a home improvement show!

Lazy RVers Love These Easy RV Bathroom Upgrades 

Looking at upgrades on your RV? Making those changes in your RV bathroom first is a great place to start. Whether you are a full-time RVer or a weekend warrior, these are some great ways to improve your RV bathroom. You don’t need to be an expert to upgrade your rig to a better bathroom.

1. Upgrade your RV bathroom sink

RV sinks come in plastic, acrylic, and stainless steel. The sink is plumbed in the RV with PVC or flexible pipes and is typically sized to fit into a smaller space than a normal sink.

Your RV might have a plastic sink, depending on the cost of your rig. Plastic sinks range from $12-$30. These are lightweight and inexpensive and can be easily replaced to give your RV an updated look.

Metal RV sinks , such as stainless steel and brushed nickel, are stain-resistant. They are easy to polish but can scratch and dent. The price for these ranges from $40-$150 and will need some special care to keep clean and shining.

Acrylic RV sinks simulate solid surfaces and are heat-molded and backed with fiberglass. These are priced in the $40-$150 range depending on the size and style. This option is a little more expensive but can be folded when not in use to save space.

2. Replace your RV bathroom fixtures

There is nothing like the ahhh feeling you get with a good showerhead .  Some can even increase water pressure while using less water. This can be a great feature if you like to boondock. These can easily be switched out in most rigs. You might also want to make sure you have a good water pressure regulator.  

You can also change your faucet. Nearly any faucet can be retrofitted to fit your RV bathroom sink. Choose one that is lightweight and easy to clean.

3. Switch to a new RV toilet

Like sinks and fixtures, RV toilets come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Some conserve water by offering a dry-flush option or you can purchase a residential toilet.

To replace your RV toilet with a residential toilet, you would have to have to replumb the outlet directly to the sewer line connection and replace the RV toilet mounting flange with a standard residential mounting flange. A standard toilet uses 3-4 gallons per flush. A typical RV toilet uses less than a half a gallon per flush.

Most standard RV holes are around 3 inches and can be as small as one inch. Make sure you know all the specifications of your RV bathroom before making your purchase.

4. Replace your RV tub and shower pan

Typically, the tub and shower in your RV bathroom are made of fiberglass or plastic. This may be a more difficult upgrade, but one that can turn around a blah bathroom into a relaxing mobile spa.

Replacing the pan or tub will require taking off the surround supports, which can crack if not done properly. If the tub is not installed properly, it can crack when weight is put on it. Improperly installed drains can cause flooding. If you are unsure of your ability for this project, it might be beneficial to hire a professional.

5. Install cabinets and storage organizers

This could be one of the most fun RV bathroom upgrades. A full replacement of your RV bathroom cabinets could be in your ability and budget. This can upgrade your bathroom from the typical RV look to one that is more modern or makes the space your own.

6. Add an RV bathroom backsplash

Some would agree that adding a backsplash in your RV bathroom is probably a luxury. After all, that small space is somewhere that you spend very little time. If that is the case then you might as well just shut the door and don’t do any of the recommendations found here.

Still, it’s simple to do, relatively inexpensive, and the materials come in a variety of styles, colors, and types of material including wallpaper, faux stone or brick, or simple peel-and-stick tiles.

7. RV bathroom painting is simple too

Here’s another simple way to freshen and upgrade your RV bathroom. A simple coat of paint can do wonders for this small space.

Before you start painting, remove the cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware. These are easier to paint when not attached. Also, make sure all the doors, cabinets, and drawers are clean. Then give them a thorough sanding to remove any old paint. This will also give your new paint and primer something to stick to. Once you have sanded, don’t forget the primer.

Once it’s time to paint, use a roller when possible to avoid brush strokes. A paint spray gun will work well too. A small brush might be needed around frames and watch out to avoid drips. Once the first coat is complete, allow plenty of dry time and follow the manufacturer’s directions for the application of the second coat. Another sanding might be needed between the two coats.

Once your paint is thoroughly dry, you can start putting on the hardware. Consider using felt pads on cabinet doors to avoid banging and chipping paint.

8. Consider a tankless RV hot water heater upgrade

If you plan to upgrade your RV bathroom, you might want to take into consideration a tankless hot water heater . They never run out of hot water. Most standard water heaters hold either 6 gallons or 10 gallons, which is usually an upgrade. Even two people can use 6 gallons up quickly. Also, a standard hot water heater takes about an hour for the water to heat up.

A tankless water heater will cost around $1,000, compared to $800 for a standard 10-gallon tank. Overall, tankless hot water heaters also use less propane and are generally lighter weight than standard tanks. Because they don’t hold water, they also do not need to be winterized. They come in electric and propane units.

As always, check all measurements for appropriate sizes and adjustments.

9. Use a water pressure regulator

The purchase of a water pressure regulator is probably not considered an upgrade but really is a necessity. The water coming out of a connection at a campground isn’t likely to be monitored which means the water pressure can vary. Either high or low pressure can lead to problems.

If the water pressure is too low, it can be an annoyance, particularly when showering. If the water pressure is too high, it can damage your RV which can lead to leaks and water damage. A water pressure regulator stops that from happening by lowering the pressure before it reaches your hose.

Most experts recommend a PSI between 40-50 as an ideal for many RVs. Consult your owner’s manual for specific guidelines for your rig.

You can purchase an adjustable water pressure regulator or a non-adjustable one. Adjustable regulators allow you to set the water pressure and the gauge allows you see what the PSI is.

10. Add RV bathroom insulation

Proper insulation is a must if you plan on camping in extreme heat or cold. It can mean the difference between frozen or broken pipes or trying to stay comfortable in a brutal summer climate.

Minimum insulation in your RV bathroom will cause plastic showers to become brittle and crack in a cold environment.

Insulation materials include fiberglass, rigid foam boards, cellulose, and natural fibers. If you plan to upgrade your bathroom, adding insulation is a must to prevent the loss of heat or cold. Foam insulation can also provide soundproofing. Insulation also helps to decrease the heating and cooling demand on your RV furnace and air conditioners.

Good article with some good ideas. But, the one thing that was never mentioned was the weight of some of these upgrades. A porcelain toilet? Are you kidding me? I can’t imagine how much weight a tiled shower might add. Even a stainless steel sink would weigh more than I want to haul up the side of a mountain. On the other hand, when my water heater dies, I will definitely be looking at a tankless. Why? Because it is always empty.

I found a bidet (simple cold water add on) was our favorite bathroom upgrade.

I have an idea, I intend to implant it when assembling my vehicle: the toilet would be retractable, closed in a compartment next to the shower box; this saves a good space – there would be an engineering challenge, hanging the toilet on a support attached to the side column, that side compartment would have a grid to dissipate the odor

The two easiest way to update RV bathroom are: heated Wall towel rack and toilet seat Bidet. Must haves for full time RVing.

How does the heated towel rack work?

We bought a 2005 montana camper .It is 34ft. long. It was so dirty .I have cleaned every inch of it. I took all the blinds down and trashed them. Also trashed all curtains. I will be putting up new blinds and New curtains or make them.There is not one inch of this camper that I haven’t cleaned. Took all of the carpet out and putting down flooring.I bought a new micro ,new range good and vent. Replaced all filters in heating system. It is smelling better and is so much brighter.Now got to work on the outside. By the time I finish I will be too tired to go anywhere. Hope everyone would clean there things before selling. It would be a lot better and they might get more money for their items. Happy Camping!!

We have a on Demand Hot water heater which only works if we are in a campground or a friends house where we use their hose to apply pressure to the on demand system. Our pump will not push water to our shower at all so we basically use that spot to put my walker when were using it. Looking at it I’m sure we could install a 6gallon water heater and have enough water to wash our dishes or Hair and a really quick shower to clean all of my essential parts of my body, same goes for my wife. But the one that Winnebago installed in our Trend is just not doing the job.

Tankless water heaters are the best for many reasons, but the best reason of all is that you can have a hot shower for as long as your water supply and your propane last. Simply awesome!

10 Easy DIY RV Bathroom Renovation Ideas

Love your RV, but not happy with your RV bathroom? Have you wanted to make your rig’s bathroom look and function better while updating an older look? Not sure what to do or where to start? Here are some easy and low-cost ideas for DIY RV bathroom renovation and upgrades you can do!

My wife Jeanne and I have absolutely loved our mid-size (30’) Class A RV since we took delivery five years ago. But, after a few years of living, working, and traveling full-time in it, we wanted to make some changes to our RV bathroom. It was time to personalize it to our tastes, make it brighter, and add more functionality.

Out With The Old, In With The New!

You don’t have to be stuck with the “same old-same old” bathroom fixtures and decor that are mass-produced out of those Indiana RV factories. It doesn’t matter if your rig is fairly new, or more than 10 years old. There is absolutely nothing wrong with making changes to your RV that make you happy!

So, let’s get started on some great RV bathroom renovation ideas and upgrades that you may want to consider.

RV Bathroom Renovation #1: Sink and Faucet

Easy change, huge impact.

If your RV bathroom sink and faucet are like ours were, you know they aren’t ideal. The typical sink for an RV bathroom is small and it’s difficult to wash up without splashing water all over the place. And, the factory stock faucets are usually very short, impractical, and low quality. They’re not the best setup at all.

We had seen a fellow RVer’s post about a hammered copper “vessel”-style sink by Sinkology. It looked great and he said the installation was straightforward, so we ordered the sink and matching drain pipe kit through Amazon. We also ordered a new “high arc” faucet from Home Depot. 

Out with the old, in with the new! Installation was indeed a breeze. We removed the original tiny sink, and mounted the new vessel-style sink in the same vanity cut-out. Since the new sink was wider front-to-back, I needed to drill two new holes for the faucet about an inch farther back from the original location. I sealed the original holes to prevent water intrusion into the vanity substrate.

The hot and cold lines that were provided attached easily, as did the new sink’s drain tube. I added some bathroom-rated silicone caulking around the base of the sink, both above and below the vanity countertop.

Wow, what a difference the new RV bathroom sink and faucet combo made! It looks much more aesthetically pleasing than the stock RV sink. And now, the sink and new high arc faucet make washing up easier and splash-free!

RV Bathroom Renovation #2: Walls

Let’s brighten up those drab rv walls.

Our RV bathroom walls were covered with a common grayish-brown multi-tone factory wallpaper that was rather dark and drab. While we painted the walls in our bedroom and living areas to brighten those spaces, I decided to give the bathroom walls a new wallpaper treatment. However, there was no way I wanted to deal with removing the original wallpaper. Been there, done that too many times with our old “sticks ‘n’ bricks” houses!

Instead, I found several nice, bright designs of self-adhesive wallpaper at Lowes Home Improvement. They were the HGTV Property Brothers’ Scott Living brand of peel and stick wallpaper and would work well for our RV bathroom makeover.

Was it easy to install? 

Installation over the original factory wall covering was simple. The hard part was dealing with the nooks and crannies, multiple corners, and out-of-plumb walls and cabinets so typical of RV construction.

Once it was done, however, it really brightened up the bathroom and we’ve been very happy with the new look. I was initially worried about how long the self-adhesive product would last in an RV. But, after two years, 32,000 miles, and cold to hot, humid environments, it still looks as good as the day I installed it.

RV Bathroom Renovation #3: Backsplash

Adding a self-stick “faux tile” backsplash is cheap and easy.

Since we added the new, brighter wallpaper, we decided to replace the factory “backsplash decal” with something to better match the new wallpaper. We found a faux tile type of self-adhesive backsplash, again at Lowes.

Peel and stick , a little trimming, and it was done! This self-stick “faux- tile” is inexpensive, and has also lasted perfectly over the past two years of full-time RV travel.

RV Bathroom Renovation #4: Storage

Add wall storage pockets.

Storage for miscellaneous items in any RV is a challenge. The RV bathroom is no exception. We had a strip of four shoe storage pockets left over from a bedroom storage hack that we repurposed in the bathroom.

In the bedroom, we had taken a standard vertical over-the-door shoe pocket organizer , cut off each row of pockets, and hung them horizontally (end to end) on the base of our RV bed for out-of-the-way shoe storage. We had one strip of pockets left over, so I attached it with screws to a wall in the bathroom to hold bottles of sunscreen and powder, as well as Jeanne’s hair dryer. A simple addition that has proven handy!

Now Onto Our RV Shower Renovations!

Our next five RV bathroom renovation ideas are all for the shower area. What a huge difference they make!

RV Bathroom Renovation #5: Skylight

Look up the skylight for the rv shower has a new look.

I’m not sure where I got this idea, but we love it! I used decorative art window cling film between the inner and outer layers of our RV shower skylight. We found the Artscape decorative window cling film online, but some designs are also available locally in Lowes Home Improvement and Home Depot stores. Here’s a selection of designs you can get from Amazon.

The installation took all of about 20 minutes. In our rig, the shower skylight has two parts. There is the main outside dome mounted and sealed on the roof, and an inner piece that inserts up into the ceiling recess above the shower. There is an air gap between the inner and outer sections. The window cling film is applied on top of the inner skylight. It cost only $21 for this decorative touch and it has been up there looking like new for over four years. It’s such a pleasant addition to our RV bathroom and shower.

RV Bathroom Renovation #6: Shower Rod and Curtain

More space and a fresh new look in the shower​.

Wait! Why would we get rid of a perfectly nice, classy-looking glass RV shower door enclosure? Well, we had two good reasons. 

First, since we live, work, and travel full-time in our home-on-wheels, removing 43 lbs of glass and metal was like finding gold! Watching your RV weight is essential for every RVer to stay safe on the road. And that precious 43 lbs could be used toward our cargo-carrying capacity.

Second, our old shower door configuration limited our shoulder and elbow room. We liked our RV shower but wanted more room to move around in there. The glass shower door also made getting in and out of the shower enclosure awkward, with its narrow opening.

So what was the solution?

The Stomberg-Carlson extendable shower curtain rod is awesome! The rod extends the curtain out an additional eight or so inches,  which makes showering and drying much easier. There is also more room to get in and out of the shower easily. When not in use, the rod easily folds back into the shower and functions as a great drying rack for damp clothes and towels.

We were also able to add a seashore-themed shower curtain that compliments the bathroom’s brighter, updated look.  This simple, inexpensive change added triple functionality to our RV bathroom renovation: more room, easier access, and a built-in drying rack.

RV Bathroom Renovation #7: Splash Guard

Containing excess water.

Since we jettisoned the glass RV shower door enclosure, we wanted to make sure no water would escape past our new shower curtain. Water escaping the shower could create major problems in an RV, which we wanted to avoid.

A large 28.55” tall corner wall splash guard did the trick. This has self-adhesive strips along the side and bottom, making installation simple and quick.  We found this corner splash guard at Home Depot and it has performed well. Here are some other kinds  also available on Amazon.

RV Bathroom Renovation #8: Shower Mat

Better weight distribution and a nicer look.

Does your RV shower base have some flex to it? Maybe too much? Many RV bathroom showers have this issue, which is related to not enough support structure underneath the shower pan. 

Too much flex, especially around the drain area, can lead to broken drain pipe connections, resulting in damage-causing water leaks.  You can attempt to add more support under the shower pan, but access to that space is often limited or nonexistent.

As an alternative, we added a nice-looking bamboo shower mat to distribute our weight better and provide a more solid base on which to stand. We like the look and have stopped worrying about possible damage to the shower drain.

RV Bathroom Renovation #9: Showermiser

Conserve tank water... plus an unexpected benefit.

Do you dry-camp or boondock and want to conserve fresh water while not filling your gray tank so quickly?   Waiting for hot water to reach the showerhead is typically a waste of water. It just ends up in the gray holding tank, using up the capacity.

Yes, many savvy RVers will catch that initial cold water in a bucket or cooking pot, then use it for toilet flushing or dishwashing. That’s a good boondocking tip . But there’s another solution that offers more functionality, plus a great side-benefit.

With the flip of a lever, a ShowerMiser RV shower water flow diverter will redirect that initial cold shower water into your fresh water tank. This saves valuable water and prevents unnecessary filling of the gray tank.

The ShowerMiser system uses temperature-activated tubing that will change from its normal blue to a whitish color, letting you know that hot water is now reaching the shower faucet. Another flip of the lever and the hot water is immediately directed to the shower head.

So what's the unexpected benefit of installing a Showermiser?

Some RVs have an internal fresh tank fill function built into their water management systems, but many RVs do not. If yours doesn’t, the shower flow diverter allows you to fill your fresh water tank directly from the RV’s city water fill inlet, rather than running an outside hose to your fresh tank gravity fill. 

Using the Showermiser diverter , you can fill your fresh water tank without ever leaving the RV. This feature of the Showermiser diverter has come in handy for us time and again.

Is it easy to install a Showermiser?

Okay, I know I titled this article 10 “ Easy” RV Bathroom Renovation Ideas, but I’ll admit that installing the Showermiser modification wasn’t entirely easy. It really depends on where your RV’s fresh water tank is located relative to your shower. As well as the access from the shower faucet to the fresh tank.

In our case, I had to cut an access hole to get at the back of our shower faucet. This enabled me to run the PEX water line down through the wall and make a tight turn under the shower pan. From there, I had to snake the PEX line through tight inaccessible spaces along the outside wall until it reached the fresh water tank.

Running the PEX line was most time-consuming and troublesome part, resulting in some colorful language that poor Jeanne had to hear. But we both agree it was worth the effort, and are glad to have this diverter in our rig.

RV Bathroom Renovation #10: Oxygenics Shower Head

Improve your shower water flow.

Does your RV shower head do little more than dribble on you?   Factory-installed RV shower heads are notorious for weak flows. Replacing them is one of the most common DIY RV upgrade items for new RV owners.

While several brands and models are available, the Oxygenics RV shower heads are very popular among RVers. They are readily available from Amazon, or even in the RV supply sections of most Walmart stores.

We replaced our RV shower head with the Oxygenics PowerFlow-RV model #87464 . It has five flow settings, uses only 1.8 gpm, and provides a superior flow. Installation is as easy as detaching the stock shower head hose at the faucet and screwing on the new one. You might also need to change the shower head holder attached to the wall, which is a simple task.

Between this new shower head, and the extra space provided by our extendable shower curtain rod, we love our upgraded RV shower!

If You Don't Love Your RV Bathroom, Make Some Changes!

These are just ten fairly easy DIY RV bathroom renovation ideas that you can do. You’ll find there are many more out there. Just use your imagination to create your own inexpensive improvements. With just a little time, effort, and money, you’ll be pleased with the big impacts these will have on the functionality, comfort, and look of your RV bathroom!

How did you get the window film onto the top of the glass and below the cover of the shower skylight?

Hi, Carol-lee! In our skylight the inner flange and inner “skylight” can be dropped down out of the roof cut-out by removing four screws. Then there’s the bubble outer skylight that is sealed up in the roof. So, I applied the decorative window cling film on top of the inner skylight (just used a damp cloth and smoothed the film on). Then I put the inner unit back up into the cut-out and reattached the screws. The film has stayed perfectly for over four years! I’m sure different skylights are set up differently, but maybe most are similar. W have always loved the look. Thanks for reaching out!

RV’ing can be so fun, but it can also be so frustrating trying to live in a small space (even if its just for the weekend). I have put together a large collection of over 61 ways to improve storage in an RV. These RV storage ideas and tips will help you organize and enjoy your ‘home away from home.’

Where did these ideas come from:

We have a pop up camper (a Palomino Colt) which is on the small end of the spectrum of RV’s, my sister has a large 5th-wheel trailer , and my friends have various sizes of travel trailers . I’ve picked their brains and come across some clever ideas in the Facebook groups I’m in. So I’ll present some of those ideas here (and I’ll spare you the negativity of the usual Facebook comments.)

I truly hope you find this list of storage ideas helpful.

NOTE: This list has been updated and increased because I’ve found some other storage options that may work for you.

RV Bathroom Organization Ideas

We’ll start with organizing the bathroom in your RV. This can be a tiny space, and whether you have a wet or dry RV bathroom will determine what storage solutions you can and can’t use.

67.Hanging Mesh Shower Curtain Organizer

This is a large, 15-pocket mesh shower curtain organizer that you can hang from your shower curtain rod or from the back of your bathroom door.

It is made of mesh so you can hang it on the wet side of the shower curtain. It is designed for the water to drip out and not pool in a pocket.

66. Wall-mounted Toothbrush Holder

The counter-top space in your RV bathroom may be small to non-existent.

A wall-mounted toothbrush holder like this one will keep your toiletries off the counter yet still within easy reach.

If you have a wet RV bathroom just be careful what you store in here. (These things are very popular and RV’ers buy them up like crazy.)

65. Waste basket – hangs over the cabinet door

Sometimes you can squeeze a small garbage can next to your RV toilet, but if there isn’t room you could look for an option like this one. (Just check to make sure the door will still close without hitting the plumbing.)

64. Wall-mounted, or cabinet-mounted Vintage Metal Baskets

These are incredibly versatile baskets. Campers put them in different rooms and they’ll have a completely different purpose.

Some people mount these onto their wooden bathroom cabinets to hold face clothes, or extra toiletries.

63. Sliding Basket Organizer – great for inside a cabinet and “hard to reach” areas.

Just imagine this basket filled with extra shampoo, soap bars, toilet paper, toilet cleaner, mouth wash and more, and then you’ll start to realize just how useful this could be under your bathroom sink.

62. Towel Rack styled like a wine bottle holder

These look cool. If you don’t want to screw into a wall, you could screw into your wood bathroom door (if you have a wood bathroom door).

Or maybe even use Command Hooks to hold this towel rack to your RV walls.

61. Elegant Swing-out Towel Rack

Here is another towel rack, but this one swings out from the wall.

I think it is quite nice looking and can hold up to 3 towels. (It will require screwing it into a solid surface though…perhaps the side of a wooden cabinet?)

60. Toilet Paper Holder used as a Towel Holder

I know this is designed to hold toilet paper, but just imagine it as a towel holder .

• That is what some campers do.
• It’ll do the trick and keep the towels from accumulating on the bathroom floor in wet mess.

This popular one from KES requires you to screw into the wall , but there are other options out there that use an adhesive. ( But you’d need a strong adhesive to hold up a wet bath towel .)

59. Paper Towel Holder used to Store Toilet Paper

These are marketed as countertop paper towel holders, but they work well to hold rolls of toilet paper too!

In the picture above my sister uses one of these in her 5th-wheel trailer.

58. Command Hook Towel Holders in your RV

Nothing really fancy about this, but things don’t have to be fancy to be effective .

The company 3M makes a variety of Command Hooks that can work well as towel holders . Many campers like this adhesive option because they don’t want to screw anything into the walls.

57. Tension Bar Shelves in your RV Bathroom

I was a bit surprised when I first put this picture on Pinterest.

The pin really took off and people really liked the simplicity of this storage solution.

And no tools are required, and no drilling into your walls .

And check out the baskets…nice and tidy. The tension bars allow you to make your own RV shelves without screwing into the walls.

Personal Hot Tip: this option is best for seasonal sites or other RV’s where they don’t move very often . Just remember to take the baskets off the shelves on travel days. (Set them on the floor when you’re driving.)

56. Seagrass Baskets

If you don’t already have baskets you could get some seagrass baskets like the ones shown below.

You could store your extra toilet paper or towels in one and then set it on your tension bar shelf. (I realize you won’t have counter-space but make your own tension bar RV shelves.)

55. Hanging Shower Caddy for your RV Shower

This one can hang right from the shower head itself, or from the shower door or rod .

And it can be rolled up and brought with you to the campground’s shower facilities.

If you don’t want to hang it from your shower head, then you could adhere a strong command hook to the wall and hang it from that.

54. Make your entire shower curtain into an organizer!

With this 9-pocket shower curtain by Maytex, your shower curtain becomes the organizer . Such a cool idea.

53. Shower Soap, Shampoo & Conditioner Dispenser

Leave the bulky shampoo and conditioner bottles at home.

No need to pack them with you when you have this dispenser.

Just fill up the soap chambers before you set out on your voyage and you won’t have to trip over shampoo bottles on your shower floor anymore. It adheres to walls…not screwed.

These things sell really well…but will it work for you??

52. RV Shower Shelf

This is a pretty straight-forward but useful RV bathroom organization idea .

All your showering needs will be close at hand with this stainless steel shower shelf (painted black). It is also available in silver.

51. Shower Organizing Kit (nice Chrome look shelves and hooks)

If you want to take it a step beyond just having one shower shelf, you can look into getting an entire set like this one . This set uses suction cups – not adhesive – to stick to shower walls.

50. Over-Door-Organizer for Personal Items and Bathroom Products

Even though these products are often marketed as hanging shoe organizers, they are very useful and handy for other purposes.

You could hang it over the door, or on the dry side of the shower curtain. They are one of the best camper organization ideas because you can also cut them to suit your needs.

49. Travel Size Accessories like a folding Portable Hair Dryer

Some people live in their RV full-time or for months at a time. For people that spend a lot of time in their RV (and have to look presentable sometimes), a travel-sized hair dryer can help cut down on clutter in their small RV bathroom.

This small, folding hair dryer by BaBylissPRO is a popular, well-rated travel hair dryer.

48. Narrow Bathroom Garbage to go beside toilet

Most RV trash can ideas require you to have narrow garbage cans like the the small, narrow, foot-activated lid like the one shown above in my sister’s RV bathroom.

The garbage can in the picture above is by MainStays, which is available at Walmart.

47. Over the Toilet Shelves (rustic look)

If you are comfortable screwing into your RV walls then some hanging over-the-toilet shelves like this will provide you some nice additional organization space .

These are flat shelves, so they’d be better for stationary RVs or infrequent trips .

(If you are going to drive with these shelves, just take the items down before driving and put them all in a basket and stash them in your bathtub until you get to your destination.)

46. Tension Bar Inside the Shower to hang Wet towels and Toiletries

This idea is from a Tension Rod Organization ideas post I wrote.

Tension bars are incredibly versatile organization items. (But if condensation is a problem in your RV you should try to hang wet clothes outside.)

45. DIY Toiletries Holder

This is a simple DIY RV storage idea made from an empty milk jug.

You can either hang it from your shower curtain, or from a second tension bar installed in your shower (like the one above).

It is an easy DIY RV organization hack.

43. Over the Door Robe and Towel Holder

If your RV has room between the door and the door frame, an over-the-door rack like this can make a great towel and robe holder .

They can be a very useful RV organization idea . It takes advantage of vertical, “wasted space.”

My sister uses the above 5-bar over the door towel holder in her 5th wheel trailer.

There are a lot of different styles of towel holders that fit over a door.

42. Chrome Toothpaste and Toothbrush holder

I know I already showed a toothbrush holder above, but this one has a different look, and what is cool about this one is that it can be used on the countertop, or on the wall. So it is versatile.

Everyone has different preferences on how they want their RV bathroom to look.

The next set of RV organization ideas are RV kitchen organization ideas.

And because many campers spend a good amount of time in the kitchen – especially on rainy days – this small area can be a large source of frustration.

41. Slide Out Organizer for under the RV kitchen Table

Stick one of these to the underside of kitchen table and you’ve got yourself a little “drop zone” for keys and phones and also a storage spot for playing cards and stationary.

They are marketed as office supplies, but they work well for knick knacks and everyday carry items.

40. Under-Cabinet Tray for under RV kitchen cabinets

I know it’s hard to tell what this does by this picture, but it screws to the underside of an upper kitchen cabinets . Most RV’s have wooden cabinets so I know a lot of RV owners don’t mind screwing into the wooden cabinets to mount a storage idea like this one.

38. Wall-mounted Magnetic Spice Jars

The next few RV kitchen organization ideas involve spice racks .

This one here has a magnetic base that you mount to the wall and then stick the spice jars to it.

It helps you save countertop space.

It is a 12-pack of jars so it should allow you to spice up lots of camping meals.

37. Modern, acrylic Spice Shelves

Here is another cool looking spice rack that you mount to the wall or side of a cabinet.

This is popular spice shelf that will also help clear up counter space .

36. Spice Rack Clip Strips (mount to inside of cabinet door)

Perhaps this is more what you’re looking for?

You can mount it inside the door on your kitchen cabinets so the spices won’t be in view all the time.

You clip the spice jars into the mounted strips. It mounts to the wall or inside a cabinet using 3M adhesive tape.

35. Food Wrap Organizer (mount inside kitchen cabinet door)

This food wrap organizer has the little “pockets” for each type of food wrap that you may use.

You can screw it to inside a kitchen cabinet door, or you can mount it to a wall. (It does require screwing though .)

Here is another ‘over the door’ organizer you may like, but this one just hangs from the cabinet door…not screwing needed.

Below is a picture of metal wire basket hanging from this inside of a camper cabinet door. (Looks like the stuff inside the cabinet needs to be organized a bit so the door will close. 🙂

34. Beeswax Wraps – Sustainable, less plastic RV’ing

Just because you’re RV’ing or camping it doesn’t mean you have to leave you eco-friendly mindset at home.

You can use less plastic while cooking in your RV by using beeswax wraps to cover and store your food.

Then you don’t have to bring all those boxes of food wrap with you. (You may still want aluminum foil for cooking over the fire though.)

33. Corkboard mounted inside Cabinet door as Organization Center

Do you always have a pile of paper, notes and business cards tossed around your RV?

If so, this is a handy way to keep them organized.

Take a corkboard like the ones shown above, cut it to size of your cabinet, and then mount inside a kitchen cabinet door .

Then if you get a brochure, business card or write a note, you can stick the paper to the corkboard using a push pin.

32. Screw Jars to underside of Kitchen Cabinets

This can be a great way to store tea bags, sugar, spices, and other kitchen staples.

Clean out some empty food jars – baby food jars are a good size – and then screw the lids to the underside of your kitchen cabinets .

Then put your items into the glass jars and screw the jars onto the mounted lids.

It is a good way to keep things off the kitchen counter.

31. Nesting Bowls

Nesting bowls like this are a nice, compact way to have multiple kitchen bowls without having them scattered throughout your kitchen cabinets. (Prevents cabinet sprawl.)

This is a popular, 9-piece set from Joseph Joseph.

The photo above shows what is included in the set and the photo below shows them nicely nested together.

30. Dish Drying Rack (in the sink)

A dish drying rack like this one from Camco sits in your RV sink. It is a good way to help keep your counter-top clear and usable. (But if you do want to set it on the counter, it comes with a drip tray.)

We use one in our pop up camper, and what I like about it is how portable it is .

If the campground we’re staying at has a dishwashing station I can bring this along and use it to hold the cleaned and rinsed dishes. (And I can even let the dishes dry outside if I want.)

I think that it’s a good product at a fair price.

29. Paper Plate Dispenser

Do you like occasionally using some paper plates for guests, grandkids, or picnics? This paper plate dispenser mounts to the underside of your kitchen cabinets so you can easily reach them.

28. Adjust Cutlery Tray for Kitchen Cabinet

Your RV’s cutlery drawer may not be the same width as your friend’s RV.

But this company (OXO) has thought of that and they make an adjust cutlery tray. So you can adjust it to suit your needs and have a nice organized cutlery drawer. It can extend from 9.75″ wide to 16.25″ wide.

Whether it stays organized is up to you. 🙂 The photo above shows it pushed together (contracted), and the picture below shows it extended to fit a larger drawer.

27. Instant Pot Duo (7 in 1) – 6qt

How is this an organization item?

Well, it’s more of a decluttering item.

Because an Instant Pot can replace several small kitchen appliances , and it even has a sauté function so you could even leave most of your fry pans at home too.

It has lots of functions that may seem overwhelming at first, but read the instruction manual, get a descriptive Instant Pot recipe book and you’ll be on your way.

I read that one full-time RV’er who works at “ Trailer Life ” magazine also highly recommends mulitcookers (like the Instant Pot) for RV kitchens.

26. Vertical Knife Holder (the Knife Safe)

Screw this knife holder to your kitchen wall, or to the inside of a wooden kitchen cabinet, and you’ll always have your blades within reach.

You can get it in different colors too if you don’t like beige.

25. Sliding Drawers for Under the Kitchen Sink Cabinet

A unit like this could help you organize under the kitchen sink cabinet (if it’ll fit).

There is a top shelf to store items, and two sliding drawers. It could a good place to keep your cleaning supplies. The smaller drawer could fit cleaning sponges, bar soaps, and more small items.

It would also make convenient sliding shelves for your RV pantry .

24. Plastic Bins – Simple RV Cabinet Storage Idea

Here is a simple RV organization idea that my friends use. They have some plastic bins that they place inside their RV kitchen cabinets.

You can store “like” items together and then just pull the whole bin out for easy access.

Because they’re cheap and easy to get, it makes plastic bins one of the best camper organization ideas.

23. Reuse Old Plastic Containers

A cheap RV storage idea is to reuse your old plastic containers to hold stuff.

Like in the picture above where an old Lysol container is being used to hold garbage bags.

My sister keeps this under the kitchen sink so it’s within easy reach and it helps to organize her under-sink area. Doing something like this is a simple and cheap way to organize your RV.

22. Vertical Organizer for RV Kitchen Items (by YouCopia)

Having pans and other cookware stacked on top of each other can be a hassle to access the one your want.

And depending on the cookware you have, stacking them may damage their surface. A vertical organizer like this one solves both those problems and makes a great RV kitchen cabinet organizer.

It allows you to easily pull out the item you want, and it helps prevent scratching.

This is there “expandable” model. They also make a standard, non-expanding model .

21. Plate Stackers to keep your Plates stationary (Camco Stack-A-Plate 43601)

Many RV’ers want to know how to store and protect their dishes in their RV.

You could get plastic dishes but if you want regular dishes check out this Camco Stack-A-Plate.

These look like a clever idea to keep your plates stationary in the cabinet during travel days.

To minimize rattles, you could tuck a cloth rag between the plates and the plastic stacker to further minimize vibration.

20. RV Fridge Bar

The word “RV fridge bar” may sound like you’re converting your fridge into the liquor cabinet (bar), but what I’m referring to is this product that stops your food from shuffling around during travel. Pretty clever.

(And people use these tension bars for other things too…like orienting it vertically to organize a kitchen cabinet!)

19. Stove top Wooden Cover (The “Silent Top”)

You can lay this on top of your stove, cut all your veggies (when you use the cutting pad with it), prep your meal, then remove it when you need to access your burners.

It is a clever way to increase counter-top space (and we know that can be lacking in an RV!).

• Plus, this one has “silencing feet” that are intended to help quiet the rattle of RV stove tops.

18. Sink Cover Cutting Board

Here is an other good way to add more counter-top space to your small RV kitchen.

You place this cutting board over one of your sinks.

It even has a small cutaway hole to drop the food scraps into the sink for later cleanup. Many RV’s already have sink covers, but if yours doesn’t, check this popular one out .

This isn’t the same cutting board, but in the picture below you’ll see my friends trailer and how they maximize counter space by using a cutting board/cover over top of their sink.

17. Mini Pantry Organizing Shelf

A lot of the RV kitchen organization ideas so far have been about organizing cookware, but what about organizing food in your RV pantry ?

Well here is a mini pantry shelf from Simple Houseware that you could use to store canned goods inside a kitchen cabinet.

If it’ll fit in your RV, it makes a good RV pantry storage idea.

16. Wire Shelf inside Kitchen Cabinet for Food storage

Here is a clever way to increase RV pantry storage.

A simple wire shelf helps you maximize the vertical space in your cramped RV pantry.

You can find these raised shelves at most retailers.

15. Lazy Susan inside a Kitchen Cabinet

These allow you to easily get at your foods in the RV kitchen cabinets, and lazy susans make convenient RV pantry storage ideas.

This is a 12-inch size with dividers and raised edges so it should minimize shifting during travel days.

14. Magazine Holder for Cutting Boards

A cheap magazine holder makes a great cutting board containment device .

Place one of these inside your kitchen cabinets and then you’ll always know where to find your cutting boards. They are an inexpensive RV kitchen cabinet organizer .

Or…you can simply use it as your RV magazine rack if you want.

13. Slide-out Cabinet Organizer

I know these are very popular with new kitchens in houses. But I’m not sure if they’ll fit in your RV kitchen cabinet. Measure carefully , and read product descriptions thoroughly before ordering.

This one above is made by Lynk Professional. (They make quality stuff.) It is 11-inches wide, but you can get them in various widths and depths.

If this does fit then you’ll have way easier access to pots and pans . Just slide them out – instead of getting on your hands and knees trying to reach the back of the cabinet.

If they’ll fit in your RV, they’ll make great RV kitchen cabinet organizers.

12. Water Bottle Rack – neat RV Kitchen Cabinet Organizers

If you have kids, or if you like to get out and explore campsites then chances are you have some water bottles kicking around in your RV . And I mean kicking around – they always seem to roll all over the place.

Well, a water bottle holder like this one will keep them nice and organized.

RV Bedroom Organization Ideas

Here are some RV bedroom organization ideas to help you get your RV bedroom tidy and manageable.

11. Hanging Shelves for the Closet (perfect for sweaters and bedding)

Sweaters just don’t hang well: they get all droopy and weird looking.

A hanging shelf like the one shown above can avoid that. If it’ll fit in your closet .

Not all RV closets are full height, so make sure you measure yours, both width and height before committing to a hanging shelf. (You could always cut off a bottom shelf if you had to.) But if it’ll fit in your camper, then you’ll have RV shelves ready to use.

10. Hanging Organizer with Pockets (two-sided!)

Hanging pocket organizers – sometimes called hanging shoe organizers – are very versatile storage items.

(In fact, I wrote a whole blog post on awesome ways you can use a hanging shoe organizer. )

What is particularly cool about this one, is that it is doubly space-saving because it is two-sided!

9. Fabric Storage Bags to store extra clothes, bedding, etc…

I like how there is a clear window on the front of these fabric storage bags. Then you can actually see what you have in there.

Not much use organizing your RV if you don’t know where to find anything!

8. Wire Mesh Cubes for the Closet (or could even screw to the wall)

I like how you can make these cubes into a variety of structures : low and wide or tall and narrow.

Heck you could build a little tower of cubes right in your RV closet!

7. Plastic Bins for Socks, underwear, accessories, etc…

For most RV’ers it isn’t about being fancy, it is about being functional .

And that is what small plastic storage bins like the ones above offer you: functionality.

Are you going to brag to your fellow campers about how awesome your plastic bin is? I doubt it. But who cares. It works.

6. Closet Organizers

There are lots of closet organizers out there.

The ones that may be best suited to an RV’er are the ones where ‘no tools’ are required. So no drilling or screwing into your RV: just hang from your closet.

This can include space-saving clothes hangers, dedicated pant hangers, vertical hangers and more.

5. Hanging Bedside Caddy for your RV bed

With a bedside organizer like this, all your books, glasses, etc… will be within easy reach. If you hear a sound in the night and you need to check it out, well you’ll know where to immediately reach for your glasses.

Bedside caddies are one of the best camper organization ideas for your RV bedroom and work particularly well for bunk beds.

This particular one by T-SIGN has multiple ways to attach it to your bed.

4. Hanging Wall Pockets Organizer

I first saw organizers like this in an RV Organization Facebook group I’m in. I thought it was as great idea and looked good too.

The one shown above (made by HomRing ) is quite small (you can tell by how glasses hanging from the pocket), but it should hold some of your RV bedroom essentials for you.

If you don’t want to screw into your walls you could use a command hook – and then just don’t overload it.

3. Magnetic Strips or Velcro on Back of Remote Control

If you don’t have a TV in your bedroom, don’t worry you can use this tip in your RV’s living room area.

2. RV Coat Hooks

Coat hooks mounted to the side of your RV’s cabinets are an easy way to add storage in an RV.

These could be hung on the side of the cabinets in your RV bedroom, hung in your bathroom for towels, or near your entry door to hang keys, coats and sunglasses .

In the picture above you can see the hooks are mounted to the side of this RV’s kitchen cabinets .

It is a convenient spot to help organize the entryway.

1. Overhead Wire Racks and Baskets

I have some super resourceful friends that added more storage in their old travel trailer by adding a wire rack above the bed at the front of the camper.

They weren’t afraid to screw into the walls. They secured it using screws along the back and sides of the shelf. (More pics below.)

And the holes in the wire rack provide lots of space to attach bungee cords : they help keep stuff from sliding around while they’re towing it.

You don’t just have to store stuff on the shelf either, you can use the space below it too .

This hanging basket may not be the prettiest thing around but it works and that’s what makes it so darn clever.

I like how my friends used a carabiner to hold their bottle opener.

• Think vertical – use wall space and stack items when appropriate

Love the idea of the remote caddy on the side of the bed. I accidentally put my new iPhone on the mattress close to the head of the bed and it slipped between the mattress and wall, WAY DOWN into an (nearly) unreachable cavity at the very front of our 5th wheel. We could SEE it but not REACH IT – luckily we were able to send our grand-daughter into the little cubby right next to the bed and hubby, (with a long rod) was able to scooch the phone towards her and she could stick her tiny arm in there and retrieve it! PHEW!

Great tips for organizing! We have been Rv ing for a while but I love learning new ideas! I’m going to use more of the smaller bins to utilize “dead space” under my sinks. I recently used a small silver command hook to stick on the wall behind toilet to hang bowl brush on. Out of site and easy access. Used another one on the side of my counter top ice maker to hold the ice scoop when we aren’t traveling.

Love all the ideas….but how can we utilize the space in the “basement”? We have so much wasted space, but not sure what to do? Any thoughts???

Hi Monique, I’ve seen people that install slide-out drawers in their RV basement. They’re heavy-duty so they hold lots of stuff. Plus, other campers utilize plastic bins or totes or milk crates. You could try mounting some peg boards along the walls of your RV basement to store tools (and then bungee cord them). Hope this helps. 🙂
