The Natural Wonder of Bermuda’s Crystal Caves

To see one of Bermuda’s most awe-inspiring natural attractions, you’ll have to go underground. The Crystal Caves, thought to be millions of years old, house dramatic formations and a clear ocean-fed lake. This awe-inspiring subterranean world has inspired everyone from Mark Twain to the creators of  Fraggle Rock .

Crystal Caves

Formed during the Ice Age and discovered in the early 1900s, Bermuda's Crystal Caves are a spectacular sight to behold and a can't-miss stop during your visit. But it's the history as much as the natural beauty that makes these eerie caves one of the island's most popular attractions.

Ice Age Bermuda

To start, we have to go back. Way back to the Pleistocene Ice Age approximately 1.6 million years ago. Much of the Earth’s oceans froze, sea levels dropped and rainwater seeped into Bermuda’s limestone, creating hidden caves in and around the island. Not much happened for the next million years or so. But around the turn of the 20th century, things started to get interesting.

A Game of Cricket Leads to Discovery

Picture it: It’s the spring of 1907 and two Bermudian teenagers, Carl Gibbons and his friend Edgar Hollis, are playing a game of the island’s favourite sport: cricket. Edgar tosses a pitch a bit too high and, naturally, Carl runs after it.

Rather than recovering the ball, however, Carl notices a curious thing: a small hole emitting warm air from somewhere below. Intrigued, the boys dig away at the earth and discover a subterranean marvel.

The Wilkinson family, owners of the property, soon learn of the discovery. Fourteen-year-old Bernard Wilkinson is lowered on a rope into the darkness with only a lamp from a bicycle to light the way. Bernard is astonished at what the lamplight reveals: incredible formations of white stalactites covered with crystallized soda straws, surrounding a crystal-clear lake. Learn more about how the caves were discovered .

Mark Twain Visits the Crystal Caves

In 1908, the celebrated author of  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and  The Adventures of Tom Sawyer  became the first tourist to descend into the Crystal Caves.

“We visited a wonderful cave …” he wrote in a letter. “The most beautiful cave in the world, I suppose. We descended 150 steps and stood in a splendid place 250 feet long & 30 or 40 wide, with a brilliant lake of clear water under our feet and all the roof overhead splendid with shining stalactites, thousands and thousands of them as white as sugar, and thousands and thousands brown and pink and other tints.”

Over the next century, the caves became one of Bermuda’s most popular attractions, with thousands of people discovering the otherworldly subterranean beauty that lies beneath the island’s surface.

The Fraggle Rock Connection

What does the beloved 1980s Jim Henson series have to do with the Crystal Caves? A lot, actually.

The caves and the story of their discovery inspired Fraggle Rock 's co-creator, Bermudian artist Michael Frith, who imagined an underworld filled with strange and delightful creatures.

“You put yourself in that kid’s shoes ... to go in there and shine the light around and you’re in this magical place,” he said in 2004. “And I thought you know, there’s something so powerful in that story. There’s something about how under our feet, behind the skirting board – who knows where – there is this magic that’s all around us. At any moment, through some accident, through some design, however it may happen, suddenly you could find yourself in that place.”

Tips for Visiting Crystal Cave Bermuda

Posted on Published: 02/28/2024

Bermuda is such a convenient family destination, especially for families visiting from the East Coast. Located just a short flight away from the East Coast of the United States, Bermuda is home to great food, beautiful beaches, and fun activities. This Atlantic Ocean island isn’t the Caribbean but is still beautiful and has a laid-back, casual vibe.

One of the most unique tourist attractions in Bermuda is Crystal Caves Bermuda, a collection of two underground caves that can be visited by guests. During our family vacation to Bermuda , we enjoyed a morning at Crystal and Fantasy Caves. It ended up being the highlight of our Bermuda trip, and I would recommend visiting.

About Crystal Cave Bermuda

Crystal Caves Bermuda is a collection of two caves – Crystal Cave and Fantasy Cave. In 1907, Crystal Cave was discovered by two teenagers named Carl Gibbons and Edgar Hollis on the property of the Wilkinson family. This unique story is told to guests as they visit the cave.

The two caves can be toured individually or as a package. When purchasing tickets, you’ll notice that it isn’t much more money to visit both. So, if you have the time, it’s worth visiting both. They are different enough that it won’t feel repetitive.

Location of Crystal Caves Bermuda

Crystal Caves is located in Hamilton Parish in Bermuda. We stayed at the Fairmont Southampton Bermuda, and took a cab to the caves. They are also on the bus routes, but we found a cab to be easier. Note that this particular hotel is undergoing renovations and is temporarily closed, but will be reopening.

There’s a cab stand outside the entrance. So, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get a cab back to your hotel.

Visiting Crystal Caves

Crystal Caves are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, with the last guided tour taking place at 4:30 pm and the first tour taking place at 9:30 am. The last combination tour starts at 4 pm.

You can purchase a ticket to either cave or a combination ticket for admission to both caves. Mastercard and Visa are accepted for tickets, and reservations aren’t required (but are recommended). If you want to make recommendations, you can call them at 441-293 0640.

When you purchase your ticket(s), you’ll be told which cave you are visiting first (based on timing and availability). There’s a place to wait until your ticket group number is called, and then you’ll be led to your guided tour.

Crystal Cave was opened to tourists soon after it was discovered. However, tours were originally offered by boat. Now, you’ll be able to walk on a platform across the water. Swimming is not allowed in the caves.

Keep in mind that there are some stairs and a ramp to get down to the cave. You will have to walk – there’s no other way to get down there. This is very important to know if mobility is an issue.

When packing for your trip to Bermuda, make sure that you include appropriate footwear for a visit to the caves. They recommend rubber-soled shoes, and I would also recommend that. It’s not a strenuous walk, but it could be a little tricky with the wrong shoes. You won’t want to slip.

A guided tour of Crystal Cave takes about 30-35 minutes. ly enjoyed seeing the beautiful cave and were impressed with the knowledge of our guide.

After visiting Crystal Cave, we had to bring our ticket vouchers to Fantasy Caves back to the ticket desk to get a group number for that guided tour. After a short wait, we were called for the next tour.

Fantasy Cave was discovered several years after Crystal Cave, and the owners of the property sold to the Wilkinson family in later years. The walk down to Fantasy Cave is much more steep – 88 steps down.

I’d recommend skipping this cave if you have balance or other mobility issues. It’s a steep walk down!

Like Crystal Cave, there’s a platform around the cave that you’ll walk on for the tour. You won’t get wet during your tour, although you’ll want appropriate footwear.

Fantasy Cave is similar to Crystal Cave, but it also has a lot of differences. The incredible formations are surprisingly different, considering how close the two caves are. We were amazed at how unique these formations are.

So, which is best, Crystal Cave or Fantasy Cave? Half of our family preferred Fantasy, while the other half preferred Crystal. We did notice that Fantasy Cave was much hotter than Crystal Cave and more humid, so keep that in mind depending on when you visit.

If you can, I highly recommend visiting both. It took about 90 minutes to see both during our trip, but we visited in the off-season. I can imagine it gets much busier during the summer months and during the cruise ship season.

They have stated that their busy time is from 11 am to 2:30 pm during the summer. It’s best to arrive outside of these times if at all possible.

Crystal Caves Bermuda

Near Crystal Caves Bermuda

Arriving early (close to opening) is probably the best way to minimize your wait. Once you are done, there are a few places near Crystal Caves to visit. Within the complex, you’ll find a gift shop and a cafe.

A very short walk away are two iconic Bermuda institutions. Cross the street from the back entrance, and you’ll find the Swizzle Inn, home of the Rum Swizzle drink.

We enjoyed lunch there and opted to sit on the top deck. I highly recommend visiting there if you can. If you choose one of the iconic Rum Swizzles, keep in mind that they are very strong.

There’s also Bailey’s Ice Cream, which is located right by the back entrance. Unfortunately, it was closed during our stay. I’d recommend checking their schedule so you can make sure it’s open when you visit because I’ve heard that it’s a great place to get ice cream in Bermuda.

Wondering where to stay? While the hotel we stayed at is now closed for renovations, there are lots of other options. Check out the map below (with affiliate links) to see some options.

The story begins over a century ago, in 1907 when two adventurous boys stumbled upon this hidden marvel while chasing a cricket ball.

Entrance stairway leading downwards though a tunnel with a sign above saying not to touch the formations in Crystal Caves.

Little did they know, their discovery would become one of Bermuda’s most breathtaking attractions . The caves, formed millions of years ago, are steeped in history and legend, offering a glimpse into the past that is as enchanting as the formations themselves.

Located in Hamilton Parish, the Crystal and Fantasy Caves are easily accessible by bus, taxi, or scooter from anywhere on the island.

The best time to visit is during the off-peak seasons of spring and fall when Bermuda’s weather is mild, and the caves are less crowded.

Walking on the Pontoon floating bridge with huge stalactites handing down on either side and crystal clear blue water below in Crystal Caves.

Visiting the cave REQUIRES a tour . You can’t see them solo.

You can book your tour individually by calling them at (441) 293 0640 OR book this combo tour that includes other highlights of Bermuda as well as transportation to the caves.

Tours of the Crystal Caves run regularly and last about 35 minutes , it’s a total of one hour and 15 minutes to visit both Crystal and Fantasy Caves.

Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for a moderate amount of walking, including 80+ stairs.

Tickets are reasonably priced at $25 per cave , but booking in advance is recommended , especially during tourist season.

  • Tours are offered from 9 am to 5 pm daily.
  • First tour departs: 9.30 am
  • Last tour: 4.30 pm.
  • Last combination tour: 4 pm.
  • Tours depart every 30 minutes, on the hour and half past.

Inside the caves, you’re greeted by an otherworldly scene : stalactites and stalagmites are hanging from above and jutting out from the floor, with crystal-clear pools reflecting the intricate details of the ceiling above.

Walkway through Crystal Caves showing the boardwalk.

The highlight is the Floating Pontoon Bridge , offering visitors a unique vantage point over the azure waters below, teeming with life and mystery.

Fantasy Cave is another spectacular natural attraction in Bermuda, offering even more colors and intricate formations.

Like its counterpart, the Crystal Cave, Fantasy Cave is filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, but it is distinct in its array of mineral deposits that paint the cave in a palette of warmer hues.

View of a wall of tiny but long stalactites and a small blue pool in Fantasy Cave.

Discovered later than Crystal Cave, Fantasy Cave has been carefully preserved to maintain its pristine condition. It’s less crowded, which is a plus, but it’s also smaller.

Crystal Cave is known for its crystal-clear blue pools and delicate formations, offering an ethereal underwater-like experience. It’s a bit more popular and usually the preferred cave if you ask around.

Looking to the right of the floating boardwalk to see the cavern ceiling full of stalactites along with stalagmites in the water below reaching upwards.

Personally, we agree that Crystal Cave was spectacular, and we highly recommen d it!

Fantasy Cave stands out with its warmer colors and diverse mineral deposits.

Fantasy Cave is great and if you have the extra time and cash, then go for it, but it’s a bit smaller and can be more claustrophobic . It also doesn’t have the cool boardwalk.

Absolutely! It’s one of the best things to do in Bermuda .

We think spending your hard-earned cash on just one of the caves is enough , we wouldn’t really recommend both simply because because it costs double, takes double the amount of time, and you’re essentially looking at two pretty similar caves.

But definitely don’t leave this off your list when visiting Bermuda! Just choose which you’d prefer and go for it.

Exit tunnel stairway to surface from Crystal Caves.

Book The Tour!

Book this highly recommended combo tour that includes transportation to the cave, Bermuda’s best beach (Horseshoe Bay), and a shopping excursion!

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes : Both caves have wet and uneven surfaces.
  • No Flash Photography : Protect the caves’ natural beauty by avoiding flash.
  • Book in Advance : Especially during peak season to secure your spot.
  • Stay on Pathways : To preserve the delicate cave environments.
  • Bring a Light Jacket : Caves can be cooler than the outdoor temperature.
  • Leave the Swimsuit: There’s no swimming here despite how inviting the water looks.
  • Be Mindful of Stairs : There are steps to navigate in both caves.
  • Respect Conservation Efforts : Follow guidelines to help preserve these natural wonders.
  • Enjoy the Silence : Keep noise to a minimum to enjoy the natural ambiance.

So glad you asked! Don’t run off just yet.

Next door you’ll find Blue Hole Park which is an awesome spot to take a dip and explore other caves that might not be as cool as Crystal Cave but they are free!

Nina swimming in Blue Hole in Bermuda

Once you’ve built up an appetite, you should head to the Swizzle Inn to grab some fresh fish chowder and the island’s signature signature drink, the Rum Swizzle. But don’t fill up, because there’s Bailey’s Bay Ice Cream right next door that’s definitely worth a visit.

Grotto Bay Beach Resort in Bermuda with canopies lining the beach and people swimming

If you’re looking for a place to stay, check out my where to stay in Bermuda guide, but the best place near the cave is hands down Grotto Bay Beach Resort & Spa. They even have another cave to wonder about, which is private to just their guests!

We hope this helped you plan your trip to Fantasy and Crystal Caves in Bermuda!

Explore Crystal Cave, Bermuda’s Subterranean World

Crystal Cave Bermuda

Bermuda is a beautiful place. You can walk along the pink sand beaches , dip your toes into the turquoise waters, and witness some of the most vibrant sunsets imaginable. Did you know that as you appreciate these sensational scenes, you could be standing above an underground cavern? One of the most spectacular and most easily accessible caves in Bermuda is the popular Crystal Cave.

Below the surface, there is a whole other world waiting to be explored. In fact, there are hundreds of caves and passageways in Bermuda; the country has one of the largest concentrations of limestone caverns in the world. In traditional Bermudian style, let’s enter the pastel pink building and through the gate to discover this amazing natural landmark.

This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

Pastel pink building and gate into one of the most popular Bermuda caves

It is very important that people do not touch the formations in the cave. Once the stalactites and stalagmites come into contact with our hands, the natural oils in our skin can cause the cave formations to die. As they grow at the slow rate of approximately one inch per hundred years, it is extremely important that we do not disrupt this process.

Descending into Crystal Cave in Bermuda

Exploring Crystal Cave Bermuda

As we entered the cave in a single file line along with our tour group, we slowly walked down many steps, descending 200 feet below the surface. Our tour guide shared information about the history of the cave with us. It was discovered in 1905 by two teenage boys who were chasing their cricket ball that fell into a hole in the ground. As they searched for their ball, the boys found that this hole was the entrance to an impressive underground cavern. In 1907, the property owners opened Crystal Cave for public viewing.

Stalactites, crystallized soda straws, and unique chandelier clusters

The accessibility of the cave nowadays has vastly improved since its early discovery. Not only is there a main staircase leading down into the cave, but there is a bridge that extends across an underground lake. Visitors are able to examine the white cave formations up close while peering down into the clear blue water. The cave is fully illuminated, making it much easier to admire the million-year old creations (and take photos!).

Exploring These Fascinating Caves

Exploring Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves in Bermuda

On our tour to the Crystal Caves, we marveled at thousands of incredible rock formations in all shapes and sizes. There are lengthy stalactites, crystallized soda straws, and unique chandelier clusters unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. As we walked across the wooden boardwalk that extends the length of the cave, we gazed across the vibrant azure waters. The deep blue waters are brilliant in their own right, but the fascinating rock formations reflect at its surface of the water as though they’ve doubled in number.

Azure waters of Bermuda caves

You might feel a droplet of water hit your head now and again from the cave ceiling. No worries, it’s good luck to be hit by one! We learned so much valuable information about the caves from our tour guide. However, we had plenty of free time to explore these marvelous scenes at our own pace, too.

Crystal Caves Bermuda - Bermuda attractions

While there are hundreds of caves in Bermuda, you should consider a visit to Crystal Cave. It is one of the most well-lit caves I’ve ever visited, with some of the most appealing stalactites. There is a second cave right beside Crystal Cave called Fantasy Cave. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to visit the Fantasy Cave, but you can purchase a combined ticket for both caves. If we had the time, we would have definitely checked it out as well as we were thoroughly impressed by the Crystal Cave.

Crystal Caves Bermuda - Places to see in Bermuda

And it seems like a trip to any spot in Bermuda wouldn’t be complete without running into a cat! This friendly kitty roamed around the property of Crystal Caves freely, both outdoors and inside the gift shop. Of course, the cat didn’t venture down into the caves themselves and was quite content staying above the surface.

Getting There

Crystal and Fantasy Caves are easily accessible by the Bermuda public transit system . Several buses travel right past the caves – we took the city bus to get there. It was about a 25 minute bus ride from the Hamilton bus terminal. Further details, including pricing and hours of operation are available at the Crystal Cave website . You don’t want to miss taking a Bermuda Crystal Caves tour as it was certainly a highlight of our visit to this gorgeous island.

Bermuda Aquarium & Crystal Caves

crystal cave tour bermuda

  • Both the Aquarium and Crystal Caves are located in Hamilton Parish. Crystal Cave is further east and nearer to St. George while Aquarium is nearer to Hamilton City. In 1907, Carl Gibbon and Edgar Hollis were engaged in a spirited game of cricket.  One of the lads struck the ball with ferocity and it disappeared into a hole several yards away.  This ball was a prized possession and no effort was spared at attempting to retrieve it.   As one of the boys crawled  down deeper and deeper, it became apparent that this was not your ordinary hole. What the boys had discovered was, in fact, the entrance to a spectacular natural wonder.

When the Wilkinson family, owners of the property since 1884, were told of this discovery, they wasted no time in setting off to explore the entrance and to find out how deep it went. Bernard Wilkinson, the fourteen-year-old son of Mr. Julian Wilkinson, was lowered into the hole by his father using a strong rope tied to a tree. Bernard descended 140 feet with a lamp from a bicycle to light his way.

What he found was beyond his or the Wilkinson family’s wildest dreams. It was an underground world of delicate splendor with magnificent crystal formations of every size and shape surrounding a clear lake 55 feet deep.

Over the past century the caves have become Bermuda’s favorite attraction for thousands of visitors every year.  On his second sojourn to Bermuda, Mark Twain stopped at the caves on a journey to St. George’s and described the experience: – “We descended 150 steps and stood in a splendid place 250 feet long and 30 or 40 wide, with a brilliant lake of clear water under our feet and all the roof overhead splendid with shining stalactites, thousands and thousands of them as white as sugar, and thousands and thousands brown and pink and other tints. All lighted with acetylene jets.” Much has been done through the decades to upgrade the accessibility and the comfort level for our visitors.  But nothing can enhance this exquisite fantasy world that Mother Nature began over 30 million years ago. When they enter the caves, every visitor still feels the same sense of awe experienced that day over a century ago.

Cinematic History

The Crystal Caves became part of cinematic history in 1913 when they were used as a filming location for the motion picture  Neptune’s Daughter , “an eight-reel spectacular triumph” produced by Universal Pictures.

Bermuda’s caves appear early in the fantasy film when Neptune’s daughter, a mermaid, visits the Witch’s Cave where she pleads with the Sea Witch to make her mortal. She is determined to avenge the death of her sister, killed in the nets of the local fisherman but her plans go awry when she instead falls in love with the King.

The silent movie was filmed entirely on location in Bermuda and starred Annette Kellerman, an Australian actress well known for her long-distance swimming and choice of one-piece swimming costume. Neptune’s Daughter was released in 1914, cost approximately $50,000 to make and grossed one million dollars at the box office.

These Stunning Caribbean Caves Were Just Named One of the World’s Top Attractions by Tripadvisor

The Cayman Crystal Caves formed millions of years ago.

Marc Guitard/Getty Images

The Cayman Islands have long lured visitors to its luxurious beaches and tropical forests. But in recent years, travelers have started going underground — literally — to the Cayman Crystal Caves , which was just named one of the top attractions in the world in Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards , announced this week.

Located on the Grand Cayman Island’s Northside, the attraction opened in 2016, with 1.5-hour guided tours leading visitors through a tropical forest and three caves. Formed millions of years ago, the caves were once underwater, as proven by fossilized shells and other signs of sea life. The slow work of Mother Nature, carving out the caves drip-by-drip with rainwater on the limestone has created stunning crystal-like stalagmites and stalagtites, giving the caverns an otherworldly feel.

The tour goes through an open-ceiling cave, a root one, and perhaps the most stunning, a lake cave, illuminated with lights . There’s also a chance to spot balsam trees, air plants, and even parrots and bats in the surrounding forests. For an even more unique adventure, there's also the Dusk to Dark Evening Bat Tour , where bats fly directly over your head and away into the sunset.

While the caves had long been there, it wasn’t until the late businessman Christian Sorensen came to the area in the 1990s to survey the caves that the idea of opening them up to the public began. After all, his father Ole Sorensen had developed Barbados’ Harrison’s Cave, and the younger Sorensen thought he might be able to recreate its success in the Cayman Islands.

According to local reports, he spent 1997 to 2011 buying land and building infrastructure for the Cayman Crystal Caves. He finally began work on the exhibit in 2012 and opened it to the public in March 2016.

Now amassing more than 2,700 five-star reviews on Tripadvisor, the Cayman Crystal Caves are the only Caribbean site to make the top 25 list, earning the No. 5 spot, after far more well-known attractions: New York City's Empire State Building in first , Paris' Eiffel Tower in second, Amsterdam's Anne Frank House in third, and Barcelona's Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in fourth.

“This attraction was the highlight of our vacation,” one recent visitor wrote on Tripadvisor, also commenting on the tour guide’s knowledge mixed with a sense of humor. “The three caves were breathtaking and I would highly recommend this attraction if you're spending time on the island!”

12 Things To Do In Bermuda: Complete Guide To Pink-Sand Paradise

B ermuda is a paradise for nature lovers with its lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and stunning pink sand beaches. Among them, Horseshoe Bay stands out as the most popular and breathtaking beach, with its salmon-pink sand and teal waters. Visitors often find themselves in awe of the picturesque scenery and captivating landscape. The pink beaches, in particular, tend to grab visitors' attention. But what causes Bermuda's beaches to have pink sand?

Red foraminifera, tiny marine creatures, are the culprits behind Bermuda's blushing beaches. These creatures are caught in the crossfire and excreted along with limestone sediment by fish, mixing with the white limestone to create the unique rosy beach sand. With eight different pink sand beaches to explore, the South Shore of Bermuda is a must-visit destination.

Besides Horseshoe Bay, travelers can explore other natural wonders like the West Whale Beach, Cooper's Island Nature Preserve, the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, and more. So, pack some bags and explore the charming island of Bermuda, and don't forget to experience the magical allure of its pink sand beaches.

Things To Do

Bermuda has so much to see , whether it's a pink sand beach, fantasy cave, zoo, aquarium, or even the various styles of architecture around the island. This article will dive into the different things to do in Bermuda , so keep reading!

Take A Walk Through Hamilton

  • This is the capital of Bermuda.
  • Hamilton is at the center of the island.

For those in Bermuda, something easy for the whole group is walking through Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda. The downtown area is filled with many of these attractions, boasting sidewalks lined with shops, food, and local vendors.

Hamilton is beautiful and smaller, making it a nice day trip. If the weather's nice, someone could spend the whole day here getting some exercise!

Tom Moore's Jungle

  • Nature Preserve in Bermuda

The next attraction in Bermuda to consider is Tom Moore's Jungle, a protected area of mangroves & woodland with limestone caves, hiking, and the Blue Hole swimming pool.

This is a nice natural spot within the island, giving people a glimpse of the true, authentic beauty of the islands. Most people spend about 2–3 hours here, so make sure and allow enough to experience everything.

Bermuda Aquarium, Museum And Zoo

  • Address : 40 N Shore Rd, Flatts Village, Bermuda
  • Hours : Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM

Something fun to try while in Bermuda is the Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. Here, guests can enjoy one of the world's oldest aquariums, established in 1926. This is about 700 miles off the coast of the United States and serves the island of Bermuda and the greater Bahamas for ocean conservation, education, and preservation.

There are roughly 300 species held here, with many being local sealife one would see in the water surrounding the aquarium. This museum and zoo are tucked within the Flatts Village, where other attractions, shopping, and dining await.

What gives this location an advantage is that it's based on conservation rather than simply removing sealife from its natural habitat. Scientists and researchers work here to help animals and rehabilitate some back to the wild.

For those with kids or anyone who cherishes the water, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo is a great stop on the island!

Walk Through The Unfinished Church

  • Address : Government Hill Road, St. George's, Bermuda
  • Hours : Open 24 hours

The next stop to consider while in Bermuda is to tour the Unfinished Church, a now-museum of what once would have become a magnificent Gothic structure upon completion in the 1800s. This stone church is very mesmerizing, having an old-time appearance.

Guests can walk around the property, seeing what once was the site of the island's main place of worship. However, construction halted before the church could be finished, ultimately leading to it becoming abandoned through the 1900s.

Like many of the buildings in Bermuda, this church is filled with history and local lore. Of course, because this isn't a functioning church, guests don't have to dress up to go.

Instead, wear something light and flexible, so everyone will be comfortable during the tour.

Some backstory on the church: it wasn't completed due to funding problems, parish infighting, and multiple damaging storms. It was supposed to replace St. Peter's Church but never came to fruition.

Take In The Pink Sights At Horseshoe Bay Beach

  • Horseshoe Bay Beach is the famous "pink sand" beach in Bermuda.

The first thing someone wants to do while in Bermuda is check out the pink sand of Horseshoe Bay Beach. Not only does this location have fantastic views of the crystal clear water, but it also features the island's famous "pink" sand.

Horseshoe Bay has its name because the shape of the beach resembles that of a horseshoe. There is also a trail leading from this pink sand beach to Warwick Long Bay Beach, which is typically less busy and great for snorkeling.

Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the more popular beaches in Bermuda. It may be better to head out early or wait until sunset to check out the pink sand, as fewer tourists will be there at these times. The nearby Warwick Long Bay Beach may also be a good alternative.

Hang Out Under A Sea Cliff At West Whale Beach

  • West Whale Beach features many sea cliffs and rock formations.

To continue the beach party, tourists to Bermuda may want to explore the sea cliffs at West Whale Beach. This beach is known to be one of the best spots on the island to catch the annual whale migration, making it a top choice for animal lovers.

The best time to see whales is between March and April, so keep that in mind.

There are various boats that take people out to where the whales typically travel, allowing them a better, clearer view of these magnificent creatures. Bermuda is filled with cliffs, hiking trails, and scenery, all of which can be found here at West Whale Beach.

It's also worth mentioning that West Whale Beach is more secluded and will be less crowded than famous hot spots like Horseshoe Bay.

If someone wants a more peaceful beach day, they might prefer to explore Cooper's Island Nature Preserve. This preserve features eight beaches, all with their own natural beauty.

Go Snorkeling Or Diving At Church Bay And Tobacco Bay

  • Church Bay and Tobacco Bay offer some of the best snorkeling/diving in Bermuda.

Snorkeling at the various beaches in Bermuda will be fun for people who love to be in the water. Notably, Church Bay and Tobacco Bay feature some of the best conditions for snorkeling and diving, giving them the edge.

Because of the island's crystal clear water , rainbow reefs, and almost haunting shipwrecks, it's a divers' paradise.

One thing to remember, however, is that it's always safer to go snorkeling or diving in groups. Depending on the weather, the water may be difficult to navigate. There may also be sealife nearby, which, although primarily peaceful, may choose not to be one day.

  • Bermuda has various snorkeling and diving companies to go through for visitors, so that's an idea to consider.

These beaches are also amazing for snorkeling/diving in Bermuda: John Smith's Bay, Warwick Long Bay, Snorkel Park Beach, Hog Bay Park, and Achilles Bay. There are countless deep dives into Bermuda's most haunted shipwrecks as well, so adventure awaits!

Visit The Crystal Caves And Fantasy Caves

  • Address : 8 Crystal Caves Road, Hamilton Parish CR 04, Bermuda

For anyone after a more exciting day in Bermuda, exploring the Crystal and Fantasy Caves is worth doing. These underground cavern pools are often regarded as one of the cooler things to see while in Bermuda, allowing tourists to witness the million-year-old formations around them.

The Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves in Bermuda also offer guided tours, which may be better for groups or large families. During one of these tours, a local guide will bring guests through the caves, explaining the area's rich history and culture.

One thing to mention, however, is that many cruise ships advertise this destination for those getting off: so try and book ahead of time.

  • During peak cruising season, getting a tour or reservation at the caves may be difficult, so check their website before heading out.

The Crystal and Fantasy Caves in Bermuda can book up fast, so try and schedule a tour a few weeks before a vacation. This will help when other cruise ship passengers get off and head to the caves during peak seasons.

Dive Into The Water At Blue Hole Park

  • The Blue Hole Park is a part of the Walsingham Nature Reserve.

Another must-see attraction in Bermuda is Blue Hole Park. This park is a part of the Walsingham Nature Reserve and gives guests a peek into the true natural aura of the island. Many locals also call this place "Tom Moore's Jungle."

Visitors will follow a main pathway to Blue Hole Park, starting at The Causeway and Blue Hole Hill Road. From there, they can explore the various caves and walkways and dive into the beautiful waters.

It's worth mentioning that portions of Blue Hole Park are a bit more wooded, giving it a jungle feel. Make sure to stick together to avoid getting lost in the trees!

Visit St. George's On The East End Of The Island

  • St. George's is filled with historic buildings and museums.

Visiting St. George's is a must-do for travelers who love architecture and history while in Bermuda. The entire town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering guests a look into the rich history of the island and its native people.

People can view where the first settlers to Bermuda landed during the 17th century, take a guided walking tour through town, visit King's Square, and even step inside the National Trust Museum.

Because there is so much history in the area, there will be countless opportunities for learning and even a bit of eating and shopping. The beaches in this part of the island are also stunning.

Best Time To See Bermuda

  • May to October are the best times to travel to Bermuda.
  • Beaches will be busier during peak season.

When it comes to the best time to see Bermuda, travelers may want to come here during the prime vacation season: May to October. Typically, this is when the water and air temperatures will be at their best, being warm but not hot or uncomfortable. Bermuda's spring months quickly heat the air and ocean temperatures, so guests want to be here before the dead of summer.

October is often considered the best month to visit Bermuda , as it's rated highly for tropical destinations in the fall.

The beaches of Bermuda will always have people on them, but depending on the time of day, guests may be able to secure a spot and set up camp.

Best Ways To Get Around Bermuda

  • The bus system in Bermuda is the best way of getting from Point A to B.
  • Rideshare will be very expensive here, even more than taxis.

For those wanting to figure out transportation once in Bermuda, one of the best ways around town is via the bus. Generally, buses run daily, from morning to late at night, giving tourists a way around the various destinations.

Of course, Bermuda has taxis and rideshare options, but these often cost much more. Especially during peak seasons on the island, visitors could spend far more to get in a cab than hopping on a bus.

Many past visitors to Bermuda also claim that traveling from one spot to another via moped is a quick and easy way to get around, although that can be more dangerous.

Where To Eat In Bermuda

Once everyone figures out how to get around Bermuda, it's time to eat. Because this island is somewhat remote, guests will have fewer options than in a big city. However, the food throughout Bermuda is delicious, especially the fresh-caught seafood featured at various restaurants.

Notably, here are a few highly-rated spots to grab a bite in Bermuda:

For instance, The Front Yard stays open until three AM, which could be perfect for late arrivals, people partying, or anyone who can't sleep.

Tips For Staying In Bermuda

For those thinking about traveling to Bermuda, there are some things to be aware of. First, this island, although popular with tourists, can be expensive. Bermuda is considered one of the more luxurious destinations in the area, giving it an edge in terms of hotels, restaurants, and experiences.

Location-wise, Bermuda is not considered to be in the Caribbean. That is a common misconception among visitors, so that's something else to know when searching for hotels, transportation, etc.

Many locals and past visitors strongly recommend remaining covered between the beach, pool, and other destinations. This country can be somewhat conservative, so be cautious of what everyone wears and try to stick together.

Of course, at a resort, tourists are fine to do as they please, but throughout local spots on the island, bring something to put over a bathing suit.

How To Spend The Perfect Day In Bermuda

Spending the perfect day in Bermuda won't be challenging. One thing to start off with, however, would be a sunrise beach hike or walk at one of the island's various pink sand beaches. As mentioned, Horseshoe Bay Beach and Warwick Long Bay Beach are two great choices.

Considering there are so many spots to grab a bite, visitors to Bermuda may want to indulge in fresh seafood for lunch or dinner at a local restaurant in town. From there, visiting the various historical sites in St. George's may be a nice way to connect with the local culture and history.

To complete a perfect day in Bermuda, one could head back to their hotel, set up a viewing spot for sunset, and fall asleep under the stars. There's so much to see here!
