Star Trek is one of the most successful and well-known fiction franchises of all time. Conceived by Gene Roddenberry in the mid-1960's, Star Trek has evolved into a massive canon franchise including seven live-action television series, fourteen movies, an animated series, video games, comics and hundreds of novels. Star Trek is renowned for its enormous and dedicated fan base. In 2009, the movie "Star Trek" came out using the original USS Enterprise crew and rebooting the film series using an alternate timeline. The reboot's sequel,  Star Trek into Darkness  was released on May 9, 2013. A third film in honor of the series' 50th anniversary, [w:c:memory-alpha:Star_Trek_Beyond|Star Trek Beyond]] was released on July 21, 2016.

In The Big Bang Theory [ ]

As science fiction geeks, Leonard , Sheldon , Howard and Raj are all fans of Star Trek. There have been references made to the first four television series - Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager - the first six films, Star Trek: First Contact, and J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot film , but none yet to the fifth and final television series Star Trek: Enterprise or directly to Star Trek: The Animated Series . Of all of the movie and television franchises that are referenced in the show, Star Trek is mentioned most often.

Sheldon dressed as Spock at the Renaissance Fair.

Both Leonard and Sheldon agree that "The Original Series" is better than "The Next Generation", but that Captain Picard of The Next Generation is superior to Captain Captain Kirk of The Original Series. Sheldon believes that Star Trek: The Motion Picture was the worst movie and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was “in-arguably the best,” while Raj believes Star Trek V: The Final Frontier to be the worst and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to be the best.

References to Star Trek in The Big Bang Theory are frequent. All four male main characters are fluent in Klingon and often play Boggle in the language. Leonard has every day and dress Starfleet uniforms, Sheldon has a Spock uniform, and Raj has a Uhura uniform that Priya wears. All of them can recite Spock's dying words, and Sheldon has recited dialogue of Khan Noonien Singh as well as Picard's speech about drawing the line in "Star Trek: First Contact". Sheldon, a self-proclaimed honorary graduate of Starfleet Academy and Captain Captain Kirk of theoretical physics , introduces " Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock ", invented by Sam Kass , and the guys always choose Spock. Sheldon has an adversarial relationship with "Star Trek: The Next Generation" star Wil Wheaton , who has appeared as a fictionalized version of himself on ten occasions as of Season 8 . Sheldon likes Mr. Data but Brent Spiner replaces Wheaton as his enemy.

Sheldon invites LeVar Burton , TNG's Geordi La Forge, to his home for a raffle, but he comes too late for anyone to notice him. Meanwhile, George Takei has appeared to Howard in his mind. Leonard has mentioned the Romulan Neutral Zone. The constant references to Star Trek seem to have had some influence on Penny , who was shocked when she referenced deflector shielding to Alicia in The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition . She also mentions that her shields were up below the waist when she spent the rough night in Leonard's bed in The Love Car Displacement .

Spock appears as an in " The Transporter Malfunction " (S05E20). The action figure was voiced by the now-deceased Leonard Nimoy and talked to Sheldon in his dreams.

In " The Codpiece Topology ", the guys return to the Renaissance Fair with Sheldon portraying a Vulcan Star Fleet officer (probably Spock) from a landing party observing a planet that resembled middle-ages Earth which also included strange modernistic anomalies.

In " The Thespian Catalyst ", Sheldon is taking acting lessons from Penny and they are performing a short skit based upon a story Sheldon wrote as a child . Penny portrayed Mr. Spock.

Spock is the Star Trek character that Sheldon most identifies with since he feels they are both intelligent, logical and unemotional. Also, when Sheldon describes their group as a Star Trek landing party, he is Spock, Leonard is Captain Kirk , Howard is Scotty and Raj is the guy in the red shirt that is killed or is Lt. Uhura.

After " The Colonization Application " and after " The Leftover Thermalization " preview, The Big Bang Theory gave tribute to Nimoy by Chuck Lorre 's vanity card, the essay is replaced with a picture of Nimoy, who died that week, saying, "The Impact you had on our show and on our lives is everlasting". A similar tribute happened to Carol Ann Susi in 2014.

In " The Spock Resonance ", Leonard Nimoy's son Adam Nimoy and Wil Wheaton are making a film on Star Trek fan and they interview Sheldon who shows them his napkin with Nimoy's DNA on it. He also confuses that he planned on proposing to Amy who has since broken up with him.

Young Sheldon [ ]

  • Sheldon mentions "warp factor 5" when talking to President Linda Hagemeyer of East Texas Tech . She later sends him Star Trek merchandise
  • Many fans have asked William Shatner (Captain Kirk) if he would ever appear on the Big Bang Theory. The actor said in an interview that he would be interested in a cameo if the writers came up with something interesting for him. Interestingly, Kaley Cuoco (Penny) has met Shatner in real life, when she played the actor's daughter in a series of commercials. She was seen asking him for autographs for her Big Bang Theory co-stars, but declined one for herself. (Similar to how the guys love Star Trek, but Penny doesn't.)
  • Shatner did appear as himself in " The D & D Vortex " .

'Big Bang Theory': Costume Party!

From Frodo to the Flash, see our picks for the five best dress-up moments for Leonard, Sheldon, and Co.

Boldly Going

Dressed as characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation — Howard as a member of the Borg, Raj as Lt. Worf, Leonard as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, and Sheldon as Lt. Commander Data — the guys run into trouble when their car breaks down on the way to a comic-book convention.

The Middle Earth Paradigm Part Two

When Penny invites the guys to her Halloween party in season 1, the costumes they wear cause confusion among the guests. Sheldon (as the Doppler Effect) is mistaken for a ''choo choo train,'' it's unclear whether Raj is Thor the Norse God of Thunder or Thor of Marvel's The Avengers , Howard's Robin Hood getup makes him look more like Peter Pan, and Penny's ex-boyfriend teases Leonard (dressed as Frodo from The Lord of the Rings ) about being a dwarf. Of course?

The Middle Earth Paradigm Part One

?that's only after it's decided that they can't all go to Penny's party as The Flash.

Home from the Renaissance Fair

Leonard, Howard, Sheldon and Raj are in full period costume when they run into Penny and her new boyfriend in the second episode of season 2. Though Leonard explains that the group is arriving home from a Renaissance fair, according to a smug Sheldon, the gathering was ''more of a medieval slash Age of Enlightenment slash any excuse to wear a codpiece fair.''

Sexy Superheroes

After losing a bet to Sheldon's nemesis, Star Trek alum Wil Wheaton, the boys are forced to parade around the comic book store dressed as female superheroes Bat Girl (Howard), Wonder Woman (Sheldon), Super Girl (Leonard), and Cat Woman (Raj) in the season 3 episode, ''The Wheaton Recurrence.''

  • Trivia Leonard mentions that the original Michael Myers mask used in John Carpenter 's Halloween (1978) was a Captain Kirk mask turned inside-out. This isn't entirely correct. It wasn't turned inside-out, it was painted white, the hair was dyed brown, and the eyebrows were removed.

Howard Wolowitz : [Howard joins Sheldon walking down the corridor] Hello.

Sheldon Cooper : Hello.

Howard Wolowitz : I see you are dressed as Doc Brown from Back to the Future. May I assume that Amy is going as his wife, Clara Clayton, from Back to the Future Part III?

Sheldon Cooper : She is.

Sheldon Cooper : [Sheldon stares at Howard] Did you do something different to your hair?

Howard Wolowitz : Yes.

Sheldon Cooper : Looking good.

Young sheldon's wrap-up was as funny as it was heartbreakingly beautiful.

star trek character sheldon dressed up as crossword

You'll have to give me a minute, y'all. Young Sheldon's finale was even more heartbreaking than I expected.

Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 13 focused so intently on George's funeral that it felt like mourning an actual relative who had passed away suddenly, while Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 14 wrapped things up perfectly with a peek into the present.

These final two episodes dealt with heavier subject matter than you'd expect from the series finale of a mostly lighthearted comedy, but the ending made it worth it.

The Adult Sheldon Seems Satisfied - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 14

The Grief Made Sheldon's Character Clearer

In those first painful moments, after learning his father was dead, we got more insight into Sheldon's mind than ever before.

These scenes could have easily relied on tired TV tropes , but they avoided that trap and were refreshingly original because they were entirely from Sheldon's point of view.

He didn't know how to express his grief over his father's death and his guilt that he hadn't said a word when George left the house for the last time, and he didn't communicate his thought process effectively.

Missy: What are you doing? Sheldon: Thinking about Star Trek. Missy: What is wrong with you? Our dad just died! Permalink: What is wrong with you? Our dad just died!

That was why Missy thought he was thinking about nonsense instead of caring about their father's death.

Jim Parsons is Back - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 14

It had never been more clear to me than those moments that Sheldon is autistic, even though it has never been said directly, and his different way of thinking and communicating was getting in the way of bonding with Missy over their shared grief.

Similarly, throughout the funeral, he seemed to try to make sense of everyone else's behavior.

At the beginning of the episode, the adult Sheldon pointed out that he was flummoxed by how people were expressing grief, and that seemed to be what was going on as he listened to all of the eulogies.

A good deal of the first half of the finale was spent inside Sheldon's head as he imagined over and over what he wished he'd said to George the last time he saw him.

The repeated flashback got slightly annoying, but there was a point to it -- he was going over that last encounter and was weighed down by regret.

Amy Checks Sheldon's Work - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 14

The Adult Sheldon Made More Sense

I'd predicted that Jim Parsons was returning to reveal that Sheldon was writing his autobiography, but I hadn't expected Sheldon and Amy to have a storyline.

I'd always preferred the young Sheldon to his adult counterpart, but the grown-up Sheldon's return was enjoyable.

Sheldon's mannerisms, rigidity, and opinions were similar to how he had been as a child as if he had gotten frozen in time when his father died, or maybe because his family didn't know how to help him change when he was younger.

He also realized how much his family had tried their best for him, which was something he never had expressed before.

The best you could say about his feelings about his family on The Big Bang Theory was that he was mostly indifferent.

Sheldon Says Goodbye - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 13

Looking back over his life seemed to have helped him see things differently.

I especially loved his reflections on his feelings about his father as he recalled the funeral.

Adult Sheldon (VO): I focused for a long time on my father's shortcomings. But now that I'm his age with children of my own, I understand he was just a person doing the best he could. I couldn't say it at his funeral, but I can say it now: I loved my father and I will miss him forever. Permalink: I loved my father and I will miss him forever.

The scenes between him and Amy also confirmed that he had married the right woman for him, who knew how to handle it when he got stubborn and didn't understand why he needed to do things he didn't like.

And then there were the last five minutes, when the older Sheldon felt like a modern version of John Boy Walton, recalling how his mother eventually sold the house and finally expressing what they all had lost.

Mary Comforts Missy - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 13

Sheldon's story has always been one of hating change and not understanding the world he'd been born into any more than his family understood him.

The juxtaposition of old and new Sheldons was the perfect ending, as the adult Sheldon recalled the house being sold, and the young one decided he wanted to remember it forever.

The Baptism Story Tied Everything Together

The finale's second half revolved around Mary wanting the twins to get baptized, with a side story about the adult Sheldon not wanting to go to his son's hockey game.

That story demonstrated how everyone was falling apart after George's death, but it also proved that Sheldon was not as selfish as he often comes off.

Amy Sits at a Computer - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 14

Amy was surprised and touched that Sheldon got baptized to help his mom feel better.

Sheldon's decision was tied back to an early episode when, as a little boy, he decided to go to church because he "believed in Mom."

In the end, Sheldon finally understood that going to his son's hockey game was similar to getting baptized for his mom's sake. T

he young Sheldon and Missy demonstrated that they did love each other despite their rivalry when Missy asked Sheldon if he would remember her.

Missy Got a Heavy Story

I feared Missy would be left hanging as Young Sheldon wrapped up.

There was no resolution to her story -- she was angry about her father's death, and that was that.

We know from The Big Bang Theory that Missy had relationship problems as an adult, but we don't know what the rest of her teenage years were like.

Still, we can guess because she was becoming rebellious before the tornado, was extremely close to George, and was mad at the world after his death.

Mary Talks to George's Grave - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 13

The series was Young Sheldon, not Young Missy, so we'd unlikely get more about Missy than we did. In these last few episodes, Raegan Ravord did great work with some heavy material.

Missy is always an afterthought, and that reflects the way the family was so focused on Sheldon's brilliance and quirkiness that she felt invisible.

However, that doesn't mean I didn't want to know more about her as the series wrapped up.

Despite The Painful Loss, There Were Still A Lot of Funny Moments

Young Sheldon was first and foremost a comedy, and it's always risky when comedies tackle dark subject matter, especially at the end of the series when they need to make a final impression.

Fortunately, Young Sheldon balanced all the sadness with its trademark humor.

I especially liked the parts surrounding Dale wanting to sit in George's chair.

Mary and Sheldon Mourn - Young Sheldon Season 7 Episode 13

That relatable moment turned funny when Sheldon told him to get out of his spot for no reason, and I couldn't stop laughing at Meemaw's explanation that she sent Dale home because he was scared to sit down anywhere.

During the second half, most of the humor came from the adult Sheldon and Amy, while the main storyline was more dramatic than comedic, though Sheldon's bringing his laptop to church led to a hilarious scene.

Your turn, Young Sheldon fanatics.

Recap / The Big Bang Theory S 6 E 13 The Bakersfield Expedition

Edit locked.

The Bakersfield Expedition is the thirteenth episode from Season 6 of The Big Bang Theory .

Howard, Leonard, Raj and Sheldon dress up as Star Trek: The Next Generation characters to go to Bakersfield, California, to attend a Comic Con there, but before that can happen, they get their car stolen in the middle of a desert.

Soon the men are sweating under their heavy costumes and cosmetic make-up as they cross the hot desert looking for a phone. Howard calls his mother, she'll help them rent a car so they can get back home.

Meanwhile, Amy, Bernadette and Amy try to figure out why men are so intrigued by comic books. When the guys get back to Apartment 4A, the three women are still in there, arguing about Thor. Sheldon is so puzzled by this development that he suggests going into the apartment with phasers set on stun.

  • All for Nothing : The guys put in a considerable amount of effort into their extensive costumes and make-up (which must have cost at least hundreds of dollars) into cosplaying characters for Bakersfield Comic Con. And it all goes to waste.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : When the guys had their car stolen, they mention that the car thief got away with Leonard's car, their wallets, their phones and Raj's cosmetic make-up.
  • The Bad Guy Wins : Leonard never recollects his car from the thieves, although he mentions in the desert that his insurance will likely payout so his car will get replaced.
  • Brick Joke : Sheldon's pre-recorded trivia track for their GPS. In The Stinger , the thieves are listening to it... and enjoying it.
  • Captain Obvious : Sheldon screams "STEALING IS AGAINST THE LAW!" when Leonard's car is being stolen.
  • "Cavemen vs. Astronauts" Debate : Despite the girls agreeing that comic books are stupid, they then get into a long argument over the nature of Thor's hammer and how only he can pick it up.
  • Crossing the Desert : What the guys are reduced to while wearing heavy make-up and sweaty Star Trek costumes.
  • Didn't Think This Through : For a CalTech physicist, Leonard's not too bright when it comes to securing his car. He left his doors unlocked AND left the keys inside. Even children would know that's unwise.
  • Downer Ending : Well, it could've been worse, but all four men have their hearts broken, their dreams crushed, and their finances damaged (especially Leonard's) because of the car thief. They're lucky they weren't left to die of thirst and heatstroke out in the desert.
  • Dude, Not Funny! : Howard's mom rents them a car to get back to Pasadena. When the guys decide to go home, Raj asks them if they rented the car from Enterprise. The guys respond with dirty looks, and Raj says, "Screw you, that's funny!".
  • Hostile Hitchhiker : The guys worry that they could be perceived as this by oncoming drivers who are warding off their hand signs and pleas for a ride. They also ruminate over the fact that the driver who might pick them up could be a killer psychopath, so they all agree to forgo hitchhiking.
  • Humiliation Conga : The guys suffer a huge one: not only is it embarrassing to get your car stolen and left abandoned without any food, water or communication out in a hot scorching desert, but the guys are wearing Star Trek costumes (Star Trek is centered around technology that eliminates such problems) and the nearest rest area they come to is a restaurant servicing roadgoers, bewildered over why 4 men dressed as Enterprise crewmen are filing a report of larceny to the police. The restaurant waitress even mocks them for it ("Why don't you ask Scotty to beam you up?") when Leonard (dressed as Picard) asks for the phone. Although the police officer (Reynolds) assures them he'll start searching for their car, the guys have NO money to buy any food or drinks from the restaurant. Howard arranges for his mother to get them a rental car to drive home.
  • Hypocritical Humor : The girls don't understand why the guys argue about superheroes, only to devolve into doing the same thing they do, when they argue at length about Thor's hammer over what is implied to be several hours .
  • Insane Troll Logic : Sheldon criticizes Leonard for not taking his car keys out of the ignition lock. However, Sheldon also invokes this trope himself by shifting blame onto Raj for the car theft instead of Leonard.
  • Insult Backfire : Invoked (poorly) by Sheldon when the gang arrives at the restaurant. A waitress makes fun of Leonard's request to use the phone by replying, "Why don't you ask Scotty to beam you up?" Sheldon replies that Scotty was from The Original Series, while they're all dressed as Next Generation characters, "so... joke's on you".
  • Kirk's Rock : The boys drive near Vasquez Rocks and decide to pose for a few photos in front of them. And that's when their car gets stolen.
  • Momma's Boy : Officer Reynolds offers to call the men's mothers to come pick them up. Leonard says "we got it covered". Immediately afterwards, Howard comes back and says "I just talked to my mom".
  • Mr. Fanservice : Penny notices the Thor comic in the store and the girls start reading it, primarily because of this trope, which even Stuart admits to .
  • Never My Fault : Leonard concurs with Sheldon that the car theft was all Raj's fault, even though Leonard left his keys in the car and the doors unlocked .
  • Noodle Incident : Bernadette mentions that another superhero lifted Thor and Thor lifted his hammer, and wonders if that means the other superhero lifted the hammer by the transfer principle. Penny retorts that if she walked into a bar, picked up a guy and then the guy picked up another girl and asks if she picked up the girl. Bernadette asks if that really happened. Penny mildly uncomfortably changes the subject by asking if they're talking about her or Thor despite bringing it up.
  • Oh, Crap! : The looks on all the faces of the people in the comic book store when Penny, Bernadette and Amy stroll in give off this vibe.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure : Stuart, surprisingly. When guiding the girls through which comics to buy, he repeatedly tells the other patrons to stop staring at them, and tries to find a comic series the girls would like to start off with so they wouldn't get insulted, and chooses Fables on the basis that it doesn't objectify women.
  • Rousing Speech : Sheldon attempts to motivate his group after being stranded on the highway with one, which gets interrupted when some passerby driver pelts a drink at him .
  • Serious Business : The episode is all about how the characters take comic books seriously; the boys get stranded in the desert and have a massive Humiliation Conga with everyone making fun of them, while the girls argue over the nature of people picking up Thor's hammer, a very common debate among comic book readers. When the boys get home, they find the girls still arguing in a very heated debate.
  • To Star Trek: The Next Generation . Sheldon is dressed as Data, Leonard is dressed as Picard, Howard is dressed as a Borg drone, and Raj is dressed as Worf.
  • One of the poses the guys do at their photoshoot at Kirk's rock is the Charlies Angels pose, one that Raj literally shouts out so they'd get into position.
  • Skewed Priorities : Although they don't have any money or food, Raj keeps insisting that the men attend Bakersfield's Comic Con anyways before returning home. After all the stupid, desert-crossing crap they went through, Leonard and Howard immediately shoot down that idea. Raj thinks that Sheldon is on his side, but Sheldon states "Actually it's 3 against 1", explaining that he feels like an idiot and wants to go home. Raj reluctantly concedes, and everyone returns to Pasadena.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Costume Designer Breaks Down Wedding Outfits, Progenitors Looks and New Starfleet Uniforms

After 65 episodes, “ Star Trek: Discovery ” boldly wrapped up its ambitious five-season run with “Life, Itself,” in which Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green) finally found the technology of the Progenitors that she and her crew had searched for, only to let it stay hidden after deeming that it too powerful to be in the hands of one civilization.

Peacock content spending patterns show shifting priorities, emmy's posthumous nominations could include chance perdomo, richard lewis and more, popular on variety.

After they were first introduced in a 1993 episode of “The Next Generation,” the Progenitors were finally revealed in “Life, Itself,” though with updated attire. As Tran explains, “I think costumes from the older shows look like they’re from the time from when the show originated, so our Progenitor had to feel a bit more ethereal. It became a lot about the materials we used, which had some metallic flax in it. That made it feel kind of amorphous, and the way it was cut was meant to be modern with a little cape, which also made it feel a little angelic. But the overall goal was just to make it feel as timeless as possible.”

As for the royal 32nd Century wedding between Saru and T’Rina, Tran found inspiration from another royal wedding, this one from the 20th Century. “My main reference point was Grace Kelly’s wedding to Prince Rainier. He was wearing his traditional thing, and then she came from Hollywood wearing her traditional thing.”

When it came to T’Rina’s wedding gown, which weighed 27 pounds, Tran went much further back into “Star Trek’s” past. “We looked at Vulcan weddings from ‘Star Trek’ canon. We looked at T’Pring times two. There’s T’Pring from ‘The Original Series’ [from the 1967 episode ‘Amok Time’] and there’s T’Pring from ‘Strange New Worlds’ [from the 2023 episode ‘Charades’]. In the ’60s show, there was a metallic trim that ran down her dress, and then a similar idea that was updated for “Strange New Worlds.”

Tran further explains, “We also looked at ‘Enterprise,’ where the character T’Pol also had a Vulcan wedding [in the 2004 episode ‘Home’]. She had a veil perched on her head, but our version is much more dramatic and sculptural, and we used tent wire to make it as big as possible. Otherwise, the dress was very much inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding dress. It’s just the 32nd Century version of that mixed with Vulcan.”

Soon after filming wrapped on the fifth season in November of 2022, Tran got a call from “Discovery” showrunner Michelle Paradise. “She said that this is going to be our final season, but we’re coming back, and we’re shooting this coda that will flash forward to the future. I’m going to send you the script pages, and then you’ll get to work. I had a little over a month to prep for that.”

About a third of Tran’s 65-person wardrobe department returned for the coda, which was filmed over just three days in the spring of 2023. A new time frame meant new Starfleet uniforms for now-Admiral Michael Burnham and her son, Captain Leto. “You can’t alter the look of the uniforms too much, and you can’t really change the color,” says Tran. “You also can’t do much with the silhouette. The shape is what it is, so it became more about putting it together in a way that felt interesting.”

Tran did just that by drawing inspiration from the look of two classic “Star Trek” eras. “We really wanted to honor ‘Discovery,’ but we also wanted to pay tribute to the ‘Star Trek’ legacy as a whole, so I looked at other uniforms. One was from ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,’ those red uniforms. That was definitely the reference for Burnham, and we wanted it to be as bold as possible. We did two shades in our version. One is a darker shade, and there’s a lighter shade, just to give it some contrast, especially with the way we were sewing it.”
