Jayco introducing the new 2023 Jayco North Point 390CKDS . The new Jayco 390CKDS is one of the North Point Luxury Fifth Wheel RVs with a loft above one of the master bedrooms. The 2023 North Point 390CKDS is a 2 bedroom camper with 2 queen beds, a loft with 3 twin beds, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen outside. It offers a sleeping capacity of up to 7-9 people.

A sneak preview of some of the changes you will see for 2023 models. There are a few upgrades between the 2022 and the 2023 Jayco North Point Fifth Wheels.

Starting with the design for the 2023 North Point 390CKDS outdoor kitchen. The front patio outside the kitchen has a griddle assembly, a refrigerator prepped for the inverter, and an electric awning of 16 ft in length. Also, there is a little protected space next to the outside kitchen, and you can opt to install a TV there.

Another new feature coming in 2023 for North Point is a 360-security camera package with a 7″ display that is available, and you can pop the camper from the outside, with no need to step inside or to the back of the coach. You’ll be able to view it out in the rear and on the sides if you wish to utilize it as a security camera.

As you can see on the floor plan of the 2023 Jayco North Point 390CKDS is a central kitchen with a four-burner cooktop, oven, and a vented range hood.

In an RV, a culinary preparation room is usually quite valuable. Now, on this 2023 model, the butcher block flips up and is hinged underneath , so you can simply flip it out of the way when you don’t need it. Instead of having to pull it out, place it on the range top, or take it back, it now just hinges out of the way.

There is a 21 cu. ft. residential refrigerator with 1800W inverter and a 30″ residential microwave oven with stainless steel top , as well as another tiny cocking preparation space beneath the microwave , in the kitchen area.

Everywhere you look, there are drawers, cabinets, and pantries . The cabinets and drawer doors are solid wood, with good guides and silent closing. There are no low-cost materials to be found.

This king bed is now standard on North Point models for 2023, and a queen bed (60″x 80″) is now optional, that is why we classify the 2023 Jayco 390CKDS as a 2 bedroom camper fifth wheel with two master bedrooms, plus a third bedroom, a loft with 3 more twin beds. There is a walk-in closet, which, like the 2022 model, provides a spot for shoes and fold clothing. It’s ready for the washing and dryer, as usual. If you wish to add them, you will need to remove three shelves. You may install a stackable washer and dryer inside the closet.

Another difference between the 2023 Jayco North Point luxury fifth wheel versions is that all of the televisions are smart TVs.

The bedroom dresser has a hinged drawer where you may store jewels or personal items. There is beautiful under-cabinet illumination that serves as a great night light. There is now a switch in the bedroom for the security camera , and you can turn all the lights on and off, including external lights, by using the voice command , which is extremely useful if you can’t get to the light.

The 2023 North Point 390CKDS has whisper-quiet double helix ductwork in the bedroom. So, you can watch TV and talk without being overheard, wine guard 360 antennae above, which is a Wi-Fi magnifier, AM-FM, an HDTV antenna, and can build a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The second private rear queen bedroom with a queen size bed (60″x 80″) and a full bathroom. As we mentioned before, the North Point 390CKDS is an RV with a loft above the master bedroom . The rear loft has 3 twin beds (30″x 80″) and a cabinet.

Wonderland Trail Backpacking Guide

The Wonderland Trail is a true gem of the Pacific Northwest. As one of the most iconic trails in the region, it undeniably deserves a place on every backpacker’s bucket list. The Wonderland circumnavigates majestic Mount Rainier in 93 miles with 23,000 feet of elevation gain. Though the trail is challenging, the rewards are plentiful. Those who are fortunate enough to secure permits are in for breathtaking glacier views, wildflower-filled meadows, pristine alpine lakes, and miles of lush rainforests that make up the ever-changing landscape of the Wonderland.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

In general, July through September is the best time to travel to this area. Snowpack is a key factor for trip planning in the Pacific Northwest. Some years a heavy winter snowpack and early season storms will keep trails covered into July. On warmer years with lighter snowpack, June backcountry trips are quite feasible. The same is true for autumn hiking; some years early snowstorms make this area inaccessible, while other years the trail is clear into October. July and August are usually great for wildflowers, but that’s also the time when mosquitoes will be the worst. We use a combination of Permethrin on our clothing and a small amount of Picaridin on exposed skin for full protection. Mid-August through September can also be a good time to visit because crowds and bugs will be diminished as impressive varieties of fungi and foliage replace the wildflowers. Regardless of the season, there is always a possibility of snow, rain, and stormy weather in this area. Pay close attention to the weather forecast before your trip and be prepared for changing conditions.

The difficulty of the Wonderland Trail should not be underestimated. It is common for hikers to take on too much trail between campsites along this challenging route and put themselves at risk of injury. When dividing the mileage between your campsites, plan with elevation gain in mind. This is not a technically demanding hike, but there are lots of big climbs and descents along this trail. It’s rare that you’ll find yourself walking on flat terrain while hiking the Wonderland. Check out the jagged elevation profile to get an idea. When planning your trip, know your personal limits and plan accordingly. Your experience, physical fitness, pack weight, and weather conditions are all factors to consider as you plan your trek. We highly advise getting into good shape before attempting this trail. You should also complete a few short overnight trips to dial in your gear. Permits are required for overnight trips on the Wonderland Trail and they are almost always in high demand. For the late May to early October season, the Early-Access lottery application opens in February and is announced in March. General reservations will then open up online in late April. During the main season, ⅓ of the permits remain available for first-come, first-serve reservations that need to be acquired 2 days in advance. It is unlikely for a backpacker seeking to complete the Wonderland Trail to get the right campsite reservations via walk-up permits, so it is best to get your reservations sorted in the spring.

BACKCOUNTRY CAMPSITES

There are 18 designated backcountry camping areas along the Wonderland Trail. Camping along the trail outside of these campsites is not allowed. When you apply for a permit you’ll have to choose the campsites that you’d like to sleep at. Each backcountry campsite has a few separate locations for tents, a pit toilet, and a bear pole for protecting your food at night. The campsites are well maintained and almost all of them are close to a water source. Sweeping views and some solitude can be found on the trail, but not really in the campsites. Most people hike the Wonderland in around 10 days, so planning one or two food drops to reduce pack weight is very common. There are four locations where you can cache food along the Wonderland, but two of them (Sunrise & White River) are right next to each other:

• Longmire Wilderness Information Center
• Mowich Lake Patrol Cabin
• Sunrise Visitor Center
• White River Campground

You can ship food drops to these locations or drop them off in person. At two locations (the General Store at Longmire & the Day Lodge at Sunrise) you can purchase food, gifts, and limited essentials during hours of operation. Make sure to follow the rules for food drops closely. For example, you’ll need to pack your food drop in a hard plastic container with a detailed label and you won’t be able to store fuel with it. WILDERNESS REGULATIONS

“Fires, pets, bicycles, and other wheeled devices are not permitted in the backcountry at Mount Rainier.” Please visit the National Park Service regulations page to learn more about important considerations for your trip. Please follow the rules so we can keep our wild spaces pristine for many years to come.

MAPS & GUIDEBOOKS

• Mount Rainier National Park Service – The main map shows campsites, main attractions, and facilities. From this page, you can also navigate to more detailed maps for specific sections of the trail.
• AllTrails – A primary benefit of this app is being able to see recent trip reports and comments from fellow hikers. With a premium subscription, you can download different maps of the trail and record your hike.
• Green Trails Map 269S – Mount Rainier Wonderland – This is a fantastic map for hiking the Wonderland Trail. It’s a detailed topographical map that’s ideal for use along the trail.
• Hiking the Wonderland Book – A complete guide to the Wonderland by a Washington native who’s hiked the trail seven times. An excellent source of information.
• Plan & Go Wonderland Book – A comprehensive guide that contains everything you need to know for hiking the 93-mile Wonderland Trail.
• Backpacking Washington Book – This book has a section on the Wonderland and a bunch of other great backpacking locations around Washington. I highly recommend picking up this book if you like backpacking in the PNW.

Water from lakes and streams is generally accessible and plentiful along the trail. It is a good standard to carry at least 1 liter of water for every 6 miles or 2 hours of hiking. The Wonderland is well marked, so it’s unlikely that you’ll need to break out your navigation skills on this trip. Still, you should always bring a topographical map and compass into the wilderness and know how to use them. BEARS & FOOD STORAGE

There are black bears around Mount Rainier and it’s not uncommon to see them. For that reason, proper food storage is imperative in this area. All of the established backcountry campsites have bear poles, which make storing your food really easy. Simply bring a waterproof sack for your food and hang it on the bear pole at night. You’ll also want to hang garbage and smelly products, like sunscreen and bug spray. Mount Rainier also considers bear canisters adequate for food storage.

• FOOD: When backpacking the Wonderland Trail you’ll be responsible for carrying and storing all of your food. At each campsite, you will need to either keep your food in a waterproof sack and use the provided bear poles, or keep your food in a bear canister . The 93 mile (150 km) Wonderland Trail encircles beautiful Mount Rainier. Along the trail, you’ll find 18 wilderness camps and 3 non-wilderness campsites. This guide outlines all of the Wonderland Trail campsites. Under each campsite name, I list the elevation, distances to the nearest sites, facilities, terrain, and more. I’ll also outline the camps of the Spray Park Trail and the Northern Loop in case you decide to hike an alternate route of the Wonderland Trail.

In Mount Rainier National Park, a permit is required to camp at wilderness campsites. You must camp at a designated site. Disperse camping is not permitted in the park. Most wilderness camps are located between 3 and 7 miles apart. This guide is organized in a clockwise direction starting from Longmire

You can apply for a permit online in advance starting on March 15 of each year or try your luck at getting a walk-up permit at one of the wilderness information centers (WIC). Permits are free but availability is limited. Your permit lists the name of your camp and the date that you are permitted to camp there. Use this guide to help you put together your itinerary before applying for your permit.

Each Wonderland Trail wilderness camp is equipped with a basic bathroom, bear hang or bear box for storing food, and flat sites where you can set up your tent. The sites are first come, first serve.

Most camps have group sites for parties between 6 and 12 people. A handful of camps have a shelter. Most are located near a water source. Campfires are not permitted at any of the wilderness camps. You can use a camp stove to cook.

Pyramid Creek

• Elevation: 3765 feet or 1148 meters
• Group site: No
• Shelter: No
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Devil’s Dream 2.1 miles or 3.4 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Paradise River 7.1 miles or 11.7 km (Cougar Rock is located around 3 miles from Paramid Creek. This is a non-wilderness site.)
• Notes: If you’re hiking clockwise from Longmire, this is the first camp that you’ll come to. This is a small camp with decent tree cover.

Devil’s Dream

• Elevation: 5060 feet or 1542 meters
• Group site: Yes
• Nearest camp going clockwise: South Puyallup 7 miles or 11.3 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Pyramid Creek 2.1 miles or 3.4 km
• Notes: This large camp includes 6 sites. Due to the relatively high elevation, it gets cold here. When I camped here in mid September it was freezing raining. Ice crystals formed on my hat while I pitched my tent.

South Puyallup River

• Elevation: 4000 feet or 1219 meters
• Group site : Yes
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Klapatche Park 3.9 miles or 6.3 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Devil’s Dream 7 miles or 11.3 km
• Notes: Decent camp on a hillside with good tree cover

Klapatche Park

• Elevation: 5515 feet or 1680 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: North Puyallup 2.8 miles or 4.5 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: South Puyallup River 3.9 miles or 6.3 km
• Notes: This high elevation camp sits near a small mountain lake. It’s a scenic area with a nice atmosphere.

North Puyallup

• Elevation: 3750 feet or 1143 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Golden Lakes 4.8 miles or 7.7 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Klapatche Park 2.8 miles or 4.5 km
• Notes: This is a small camp with 3 sites located on the side of a hill. This camp offers excellent tree cover. I camped here during a heavy storm and stayed pretty dry. One drawback to this site is the fact that the bathroom and group site is pretty far from the camps. You have to cross the river over a bridge to get there. Doing this in the pitch blackness of night would not be pleasant. 

Golden Lakes

• Elevation: 5130 feet or 1564 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: South Mowich River 6 miles or 9.7 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: North Puyallup 4.8 miles or 7.7 km
• Notes: This camp sits near a decent sized lake. There is a ranger cabin near the camp that is occasionally occupied.

South Mowich River

• Elevation: 2605 feet or 794 meters
• Shelter: Yes
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Mowich Lake 4.3 miles or 6.9 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Golden Lakes 6 miles or 9.7 km
• Notes: This is a nice, low elevation camp with good tree cover. This would be a good choice for a cold or stormy night. The camp has a nice 3 sided wood shelter where 4-6 people could sleep. One drawback to the shelter is the mice. They can get pretty aggressive and walk on you in your sleep. The river runs right by the camp making water easily accessible. The river also adds a nice background noise while you’re sleeping. 

Mowich Lake Campground (Non-Wilderness Camp)

• Elevation: 4929 feet or 1502 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Ipsut Creek 5.4 miles or 8.7 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: South Mowich River 4.3 miles or 6.9 km
• Notes: This is the park’s smallest non-wilderness camp. It has 10 campsites and 3 group sites. Here, you’ll find picnic tables, tent platforms, and bear boxes for food storage. There are also decent bathrooms stocked with toilet paper. If you shipped or dropped off a food or fuel cache, you can pick it up at the Mowich Lake Patrol Cabin. If you’re hiking in a clockwise direction, this is where you will fork off of the Wonderland Trail if you’re taking the Spray Park route.

Ipsut Creek

• Elevation: 2330 feet or 710 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Carbon River 3.3 miles or 5.3 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Mowich Lake 5.4 miles or 8.7 km
• Notes: This is the lowest elevation camp on the Wonderland Trail. At this large camp, you’ll find a 3 sided wooden shelter, nice bathrooms with toilet paper, bear boxes for food storage, and plenty of flat campsites. Ipsut Creek offers good tree cover as well if you’re camping in the rain. I camped here on a night with ‘record precipitation’ according to the ranger and stayed pretty dry. This camp used to be one of the trail’s main trailheads before a major flood washed out the road in 2006. Two miles of road were washed out and never replaced. Now the camp is only accessible by foot and bicycle.

Carbon River

• Elevation: 3195 feet or 974 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Dick Creek 1.2 miles or 1.9 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Ipsut Creek 3.3 miles or 5.3 km
• Notes: This is a scenic campground near the river with decent tree cover. If you’re hiking in a counterclockwise direction, this is where you will cross fork off of the Wonderland Trail over a suspension bridge if you are taking the Spray Park route.
• Elevation: 4185 feet or 1276 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Mystic Lake 3.6 miles or 5.8 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Carbon River 1.2 miles or 1.9 km
• Notes: This small camp sits just above Carbon Glacier. It has just two sites. One offers a nice view and the other sits tucked away in the trees. The camp is near a water source.

Mystic Lake

• Elevation: 5570 feet or 1698 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Granite Creek 4.5 miles or 7.2 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Dick Creek 3.6 miles or 5.8 km
• Notes: This large camp offers 6 regular sites and a group site. The campsites are built up on the side of a hill with decent tree cover. This bathroom here is one of the worst. It’s a 3 sided structure about 4 feet tall with no roof. Using it during a rainstorm was pretty unpleasant. While preparing dinner, two black bears walked through camp. It was a mother bear and her young cub. Some hikers I met a few days later told me that bear sightings are common around Mystic so keep your eye out while hiking and camping near here. Granite Creek

• Elevation: 5765 feet or 1757 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Sunrise Camp 4.1 miles or 6.6 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Mystic Lake 4.5 miles or 7.2 km
• Notes: This is a decent, high elevation camp with good tree cover. It’s the closest camp to Sunrise, one of the more popular starting points of the Wonderland Trail. If you’re starting there and hiking counterclockwise, this would be a good place to camp your first night.

Sunrise Camp

• Elevation: 6245 feet or 1903 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: White River 4.3 miles or 6.9 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Granite Creek 4.1 miles or 6.6 km
• Notes: This camp lies just over a mile from one of the Wonderland Trail’s main trailheads, Sunrise. If you shipped or dropped off a food cache for Sunrise, you can pick it up at the visitor’s center near the trailhead.

White River Campground (Non-Wilderness Camp)

• Elevation: 4280 feet or 1305 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Summerland 5.5 miles or 8.9 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Sunrise Camp 4.3 miles or 6.9 km
• Notes: This large non-wilderness camp offers 112 sites, flush toilets, fire pits, and water. A small number of spaces are reserved for thru-hikers which can be reserved for free when you get your permit if they are available.
• Elevation: 5940 feet or 1811 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Indian Bar 4.5 miles or 7.2 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: White River Campground 5.5 miles or 8.9 km
• Notes: This is possibly the most popular camp in the entire park due to the incredible views of Mount Rainier, meadows of wildflowers, and frequent wildlife spottings. Securing a site here can be a challenge during the busy month of August due to the high demand. If you’re planning to get a walk-up permit, schedule this camp near the end of your itinerary to give yourself the best chance of getting a spot.
• Elevation: 5120 feet or 1561 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Nickel Creek 6.8 miles or 10.9 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Summerland 4.5 miles or 7.2 km
• Notes: This beautiful camp is probably the second most popular on the trail after Summerland. It sits near the Ohanapecosh River and features a shelter and group site. A water source lies near the camp.

Nickel Creek

• Elevation: 3385 feet or 1032 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Maple Creek 3.1 miles or 5 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Indian Bar 6.8 miles or 10.9 km
• Notes: This is a pleasant camp with decent tree cover.

Maple Creek

• Elevation: 2815 feet or 858 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Paradise River 6.8 miles or 10.9 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Nickel Creek 3.1 miles or 5 km
• Notes: Nice low elevation camp with a group site.

Paradise River

• Elevation: 3805 feet or 1160 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Pyramid Creek 7.1 miles or 11.7 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Maple Creek 6.8 miles or 10.9 km
• Notes: Nice camp with a group site.

Cougar Rock Campground (No-Wilderness Camp)

Elevation: 3180 feet or 969 meters

• Notes: Cougar Rock Campground lies around a mile from Longmire. This is one of the busiest and most popular parts of the park. Facilities include bathrooms with flush toilets, fire pits, picnic tables, tent pads, food storage, and drinking water. This is a paid car campground. You can reserve a space through the recreation.gov website here. A small number of spaces are reserved for thru-hikers which are issued for free with a permit from the wilderness information centers.

Spray Park Trail Wilderness Campsites

The Spray Park Trail is a popular alternate route for Wonderland Trail thru-hikers. This 16 miles stretch of trail takes offers a high elevation alternative to the low elevation Ipsut Creek section of the Wonderland Trail.

If you’re traveling a clockwise direction, the Spray Park Trail splits off from the Wonderland Trail at Mowich Lake and Rejoins near Carbon River camp. Campsites along the spray park trail traveling clockwise from Mowich Lake include:

Eagle’s Roost

• Elevation: 4885 feet or 1489 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Cataract Valley 4.8 miles or 7.7 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Mowich Lake 1.9 miles or 3.1 km
• Notes: This wilderness camp offers 7 sites, a basic bathroom, a bear pole, and good tree cover. The bathroom is located down a steep hill on the edge of camp. One of the best things about this camp is the nearby waterfall where you can collect water and take a dip during the summer.

Cataract Valley

• Elevation: 4620 feet or 1408 meters
• Nearest camp going clockwise: Carbon River 1.6 miles or 2.6 km
• Nearest camp going counterclockwise: Eagle’s Roost 4.8 miles or 7.7 km
• Notes: This camp offers good tree cover and a nearby stream for collecting water.

The Northern Loop Trail Wilderness Campsites

This 15.5 mile trail forks off from the Wonderland Trail near Sunrise and meats back up in the Carbon River Valley between Carbon River camp and Ipsut Creek. Many hikers choose to hike a loop by taking the Northern Loop Trail out and the Wonderland Trail back. This hike is about 33 miles.

For a longer hike, you can add the spray park trail to this loop to create a 48 mile trip through the entire northern section of Mount Rainier National Park. This offers kind of a mini Wonderland Trail experience if you don’t want to hike the entire 93 miles.

Camps along the Northern Loop Trail from East to West include:

Berkeley Park

• Elevation: 5375 feet or 1638 meters
• Nearest camp going West: Fire Creek 3.8 miles or 6.1 km
• Nearest camp going East: Sunrise 3.9 miles or 6.3 km
• Notes: This wilderness camp offers 3 sites, a bear pole, and open air toilet. A river runs right by camp where you can collect water. It’s a good idea to stock up on water before you leave camp if you’re hiking West. You’ll pass through a 5 mile section without any water sources.
• Elevation: 4860 feet or 1481 meters
• Nearest camp going West: Lake James 3.8 miles or 6.1 km
• Nearest camp going East: Berkeley Park 3.8 miles or 6.1 km
• Notes: This camp lies about .5 miles off of the trail. A stream runs through camp where you can collect water and take a dip during the summer. This camp offers good tree cover.
• Nearest camp going West: Yellowstone Cliffs 3.3 miles or 5.3 km
• Nearest camp going East: Fire Creek 3.8 miles or 6.1 km
• Notes: This camp is located near Lake James. The sites sit far back from the lakeshore scattered on a hillside.

Yellowstone Cliffs

• Elevation : 5180 feet or 1579 meters
• Nearest camp going West: You have two options. Carbon River camp (4.2 miles or 6.8 km from Yellowstone Cliffs) or Ipsut Creek (5.5 miles or 8.9 km from Yellowstone Cliffs). After leaving Yellowstone Cliffs, you’ll hike for 3.1 miles or 5 km, cross a suspension bridge, and meet up with the Wonderland Trail. From there, you can head clockwise on the Wonderland Trail back toward Carbon River camp. This will lead you back to Sunrise. You can also link up with the Spray Park Trail near Carbon River Camp. If you head counterclockwise on the Wonderland Trail, you’ll get to Ipsut Creek camp. This trail will take you to Mowich Lake.
• Nearest camp going East: James camp 3.3 miles or 5.3 km
• Notes: This is a small camp with just two sites. The camp sits near Spukwush Creek where you can collect water.

A Few More Options: Hotels and Car Camps Near the Wonderland Trail

If you’re having trouble putting together an itinerary or you want to break up the trip a bit with a hotel stay in the middle, you have a few options including:

National Park Inn, Longmire

The National Park Inn is located in the town of Longmire. This would be a great place to stay the night before you start your hike or for a rest day in the middle of your hike. They have a nice restaurant and a lounge area where you can relax by the fire.

In Longmire, you can access the internet at the wilderness information center, use flush toilets, visit a small shop for supplies, and get permits.

Paradise Inn, Paradise

Paradise Inn is located in the town of Paradise. The Wonderland Trail doesn’t pass through Paradise but it does pass nearby. The nearest Wonderland Trail wilderness camp is Paradise River. A stay here will add a couple of miles to your itinerary.

Elevation: 5400 feet or 1645 meters.

Ohanapecosh Camp

  This is a non-wilderness camp that is located in the Southeast corner of the park. Ohanapecosh Camp lies a few miles off of the Wonderland Trail. The closest Wonderland Trail camp is probably Nickel Creek. There is really no reason to stay here unless all of the nearby camps are booked up. A campsite costs $20 per night. You can make a reservation here.

Elevation: 1914 feet or 583 meters.

Things to Consider When Choosing Your Wonderland Trail Campsites

The Wonderland Trail has a pretty serious elevation change of about 22,000 feet (6700 meters). To help you build your itinerary and pick out campsites, look at the elevation gain or loss between sites. This can help you determine how many miles you want to hike on any given day. Some days you’ll be climbing all day. You may want to schedule fewer miles for these days.

Also consider the distance between camps. They are not all evenly spaced. Sometimes the next camp is just a couple of miles down the trail and sometimes it’s up to 7 miles away. One day ended up being a little more intense than I would have liked. I ended up hiking for a couple of hours in the dark. I would have been much happier stopping one camp before.

You don’t have to worry about water availability too much on this trail. While you’re hiking, you’ll come across plenty of water sources. You could probably get by just carrying a liter of water at a time. I usually carried about 2 liters just to be safe.

My Experience Camping on the Wonderland Trail

I started my Wonderland Trail hike in mid-September. Unfortunately, the week I chose turned out to be very wet. When I was putting together my walk up itinerary with the ranger, she informed me that ‘record precip’ was expected over the next couple of days.

To stay a bit more dry, the ranger helped me choose camps that were at lower elevations with good tree cover. It helped somewhat but I still got wet. After my first night at Mystic Lake camp, I basically woke up in a puddle.

The storm lasted about 5 days before letting up. During that time, everything soaked through and never dried out. Even with all of the rain, I still had a great hike. The rain added to the atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

The campsites along the Wonderland Trail are basic but well placed and maintained. Each camp offers some kind of food storage, a basic bathroom, and a nice flat place to pitch a tent. Most camps are built in the trees which provide a bit of protection from the rain and wind.

If you don’t get a space in all of your chosen camps, don’t worry about it too much. Sure, some camps offer better views and facilities. At the end of the day, this doesn’t really matter. You’re just going to be sleeping at camp anyway for the most part. During your hike, you’ll pass by all of the camps anyway. Enjoy the views on the trail.

Airstream makes some of the most aesthetically pleasing and functional travel trailers on the market. Their 30-foot long Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk floorplan is the perfect choices for families traveling with two to three children.

A front queen bedroom offers plenty of space and storage for an adult couple. In the rear of the RV, beside the bathroom, a bunkroom offers a bottom queen size bed and a single top bunk.

Both of the queen bedrooms in the travel trailer are enclosed by curtains, so there is visual privacy but no sound-proofing. The Flying Cloud also offers a similar model with a separate office space instead of a second bedroom.

Coachman Catalina 343BHTS

The Coachman Catalina 343BHTS travel trailer has two full-size, private queen bedrooms. The main bedroom is in the front of the trailer and includes a large closet with washer and dryer preps.

The second queen bedroom, located in the rear of the trailer, is also spacious with a walk-around bed and wardrobe. The corner kitchen, bathroom and living area are between the two bedrooms.

At 38 feet long, the Catalina double queen trailer has plenty of room for four adults to travel together.

Crossroads Zinger ZR390DB

If you are looking for a huge travel trailer with sleeping space for four adults, the Crossroads Zinger ZR390DB is the answer. It has two full bedroom suites, each with their own bathroom. It is also huge, at almost 43 feet long!

The main bedroom in the front of the RV has a king bed, a large closet and washer and dryer preps. This front bedroom is connected to a dual entry bathroom. In the back of the RV is a guest suite with a queen bed and a large bathroom that extends the full width of the trailer.

Forest River Grey Wolf 29QB

Significantly shorter than the Zinger trailer, the 29-foot long Forest River Grey Wolf 29QB also offers two queen bedrooms. Despite its small size, this travel trailer is loaded with features.

The main bedroom offers a walk-around queen bed with direct entry into the bathroom. The secondary bedroom, in the rear of the trailer, has limited floor space but is enclosed with a real door for total privacy. The Grey Wolf also offers a double entry with direct access to the bathroom from outside.

Forest River Wildwood 29VBUD

For RV campers looking to maximize sleeping capacity, the Forest River Wildwood 29VBUD is the perfect choice. The 36-foot long travel trailer features a king bed in the main bedroom and a secondary bedroom with sleeping space for four.

The rear bedroom has a queen bed on the bottom, as well as, two single upper bunks. It is the perfect configuration for three generations to travel together! The travel trailer also features a walk-in pantry and an outdoor kitchen.

Keystone Hideout 38FQTS

The optional queen bed in the cargo area has an electric lift, so the bed can be raised when you are traveling with more toys than guests. A full bathroom separates the back bedroom / garage from the main living area.

In the main living area, campers will enjoy a full kitchen with a pantry and a large dinette. The front of the RV houses a private queen bedroom.

The 2019 Aspen Trail 3600QBDS features dual entries as well as two queen beds. The rear bedroom has more privacy with a full door, while the front bedroom has open entrances on both sides of a large shelving unit.

Both bedrooms have ample clothing storage and share a bathroom located in the main living area. The 40-foot long travel trailer also features large patio doors and a heated and enclosed underbelly.

2021 Jayco Eagle 340DROK

The Jayco Eagle 340DROK has a unique rear main bedroom and bathroom. The main bedroom features a queen-size or king-size bed and a connected full bathroom with an oversized vanity.

The second bedroom, located in the front of the RV has either a tri-fold sofa or a queen bed and tons of wardrobe space. There is also a half-bath attached to the secondary bedroom. In the living room, campers can all get cozy on the enormous six-seat theater sofa.

2020 Keystone Sprinter Limited 3571FWLFT

The 2020 Keystone Sprinter Limited 3571 fifth wheel offers the perfect solution for RVers who want a guest bedroom and an office. The bonus room in the middle of the RV includes a queen-size trifold sofa.

The room also includes a dresser, which could easily double as a desk. There are also plenty of other sleeping spaces in this RV, including another queen-size trifold sofa in the living room, a queen-size loft and a king-size bed in the main room.

Even with two bedrooms, this fifth wheel still has plenty of space for a large kitchen and living area.

2021 Heartland M180BH

Although the Heartland M180BH does not have two separate bedrooms, it does fit three queen-size beds into a 22-foot long space. In the living area, a queen-size murphy bed folds down over the jackknife sofa.

At the rear of the trailer, is a set of queen-size bunkbeds. The sleeping capacity plus the small size make this the perfect travel trailer for RVers on a budget who want to travel with large groups.

2017 KZ Venom 4020DQ

The oldest on our list of travel trailers with two queen bedrooms, the 2017 KZ Venom 4020DQ is a toy hauler with a unique layout. The main bedroom with a queen-size bed sits in the rear of the trailer.

However, the garage also easily transforms into another queen bedroom when the power bed option is included. The garage can be entered through an outside entrance or through the main bedroom. The Venom also includes a spacious front living room and center kitchen.

The Jay Flight is one of the more popular models in their wide range of travel trailers, with the Bungalow being geared toward groups who prioritize two distinct bedroom spaces.

Several of their camper floor plans feature a true “Master Bedroom” that with the privacy you prioritize, as well as a living area that also hosts a pullout bed. This includes their 40 RLTS, as well as their 40 BHTS and 40FBTS.

In the case of the popular 40 RLTS the 2 bedrooms floor plan bedroom configuration is really meant more for a family with a teenager, rather than a pair of co-vacationing couples.

The master bedroom is more of a master suite with a queen size bed, with vanity and ward. The second sleeping area is in the main living area in the form of a comfortable couch/hide-a-bed.

The Wildwood itself is available in 14 different floor plans as well as two 2 limited “Special Edition”versions for you to consider.

Within these 7 models have a distinct two-bedroom floor plan. Among these the Forest River Wildwood T30QBSS likely has the most appeal for families who need travel trailer with two bedrooms.

Technically, the second bedroom in this RV does have bunkbed options as standard, but there is room to easily convert the space to handle a queen-size bed.

The frame and total length of models in the Wildwood line can range from a relatively compact 26’10” all the way up to 39 feet.

This likely means you will need a three-quarter-ton or even a one-ton pickup truck to safely tow the larger models. In the case of the T30QBSS, you are looking at a sleek 33.83-feet.

This RV is so large enough that the manufacturer offers it as a fifth-wheel camper as well as a travel trailer.

One thing to note about this unit is that it was also designed to handle cold season camping.

While it is well-insulated and has thoughtfully engineered ducting for the forced air furnace, it might not be enough to handle the deep cold of a northern winter.

If you need to camp in the desert in the spring or fall or spend a night at altitude, this is still a great option for keeping your family toasty warm.

When it comes to families and couples who need two distinct bedrooms in their RV, the RT292RLS is probably the most appealing of their 7floor plans.

This four seasons RV trailer has one dedicated bedroom with a queen size bed and the spacious couch in the living room area then folds out into a queen size bed.

Just bear in mind that at an average gross weight of over 10,000 pounds you won’t be towing the Highland Open Range with a half-ton pickup truck like an F-150 or a Silverado .

This will take at least a three-quarter pickup truck with a diesel engine, especially if you need to tow it up a grade.

When you get to your intended campsite the spring assist door opens up and folds back to provide a heavy-duty ramp. Once you back your “Toys” out, you can get to work converting into a comfortable sleeping space.

There is a queen-size bed in the front near the tongue forward area. When you convert it to a full camper the rear sleeping accommodation hosts a special “Flap Jack” queen size bed.

A few things to keep in mind with the Rubicon is that not all models have an indoor shower. Some come with only an exterior shower.

If you intend to camp in cold conditions, you might also want to note that not all floor plans come with a forced-air propane furnace.

Prime Time is a lesser known RV manufacturer. Still, you shouldn’t let their limited marketing presence put you off.

They actually that have a long history of maintaining a presence in the travel trailer niche.

Their Avenger in the 26BK floor plan has a dedicated queen bed in the master bedroom section at the front.

There is a large double bunk in the rear area as well as a sofa that could comfortably sleep a child.

It comes with an air conditioner and furnace as standard, though they are a little on the small side for a 28-foot travel trailer.

If you intend to travel in blazing hot areas like the desert, or you might also want to use it as a hunting base camp lodge, then you might want to talk to the dealer about upgrading the AC or forced air furnace.

Palomino is an established name in the RV industry that has recently merged with Forest River and its affiliate Berkshire Hathaway.

The 31FKRK Travel Trailer is the floor plan that best mimics a two-bedroom feel. There is a dedicated master bedroom complete with a king-size bed.

A modest bathroom with toilet and shower stall separate it from the main living area. There is an optional sofa with a pull out sleeper bed that can double as a second bedroom.

However, you will need to put the bed away to use the recliners and other seated areas beside the dinette.

The kitchen even includes a spacious double door refrigerator. There are even hookups for an optional washing machine and dryer.

Weighing in at a little over 8,600-pounds dry weight, the PUMA 31FKRK could be towed by a half-ton pickup truck with an 8-cylinder engine and an upgraded tow package.

If you are planning to take it up steep hills or at altitude, you might want to take it a step further and go with a three-quarter or one-ton pickup truck.

That way you know you have the power you need to handle the grade, while also reducing the chance of trailer sway problems.

7.  Winnebago Minnie Plus 30RLSS Travel Trailer

Winnebago is a former titan of the RV industry that has come down a little from their once lofty heights to just become a trusted giant.

They have a decades-long reputation for producing high-quality motorhomes which led to them expanding into travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers and more.

Their Minnie Plus is one of their more popular travel trailers, with multiple floor plans being offered in recent years.

Families and co-vacationing couples who want two distinct sleeping areas are more likely to be interested in the 30RLSS floor plan.

It features a true master bedroom with a latching door, wardrobe closets and other amenities that verge on luxury.

On the far another end of the travel trailer, there is a spacious trifold couch that expands into a true full-size bed.

There is a bathroom with direct access from the master suite or the main living area of the camper. It includes a basic foot pedal flushing plastic toilet and a spacious shower stall.

The kitchen has a three-burner stove with an oven, as well as a refrigerator and pantry. There is even a galley island for laying out on the go food items.

8.  The Keystone RV PREMIER 26UDPR Travel Trailer

Keystone is a subsidiary of the high-quality RV manufacturer Thor Industries. They have a fair number of fifth-wheel trailers that can be deployed as a two-bedroom of bunkhouse RV. 

The Premier is one of their most popular travel trailer campers. It’s available in a variety of floor plans, but their 26UDPR is probably the most accommodating for families and co-vacationing couples who want two distinct bedrooms.

There is a master suite in the front with its own internal and external doors. As standard, it comes with a queen-size bed and a lot of thoughtful storage, including a laundry chute.

A spacious bathroom with a toilet and radius shower stall serves as a buffer zone between the master suite and the rest of the RV.

The main living area includes a kitchen with a gas-electric refrigerator, a large pantry, and a 3-burner range with oven.

A tri-fold sofa in the main living area can then be deployed to create a second bedroom. It’s also worth noting that as an optional extra you can swap out the sofa for a pair of comfortable recliners.

One nice thing about the Keystone PREMIER 26UDPR is the gross weight of around 7,500 pounds.

This means you could potentially tow it safely with a half-ton pickup truck with a heavy-duty tow package.

Airstream is one of the trusted and most classic names in RV travel trailers . They have a sleek look paired with a long-standing reputation for quality.

Even older models that are no longer road worthy, have enthusiasts turning them into lodging features on vista locations like the Pacific Coast Highway.

Versatility is one of the features that has helped them remain popular for so long, this shines through in the Airstream Globetrotter® and it’s 8 different floor plans.

Families who need two separate sleeping areas might want to start by looking at the Airstream Globetrotter 30RB which is a perfect small travel trailer with two bedrooms.

It has a master bedroom that comes with a queen-size bed and dual nightstands. There is also a lot of thoughtful storage as well as a space for wall mounting a flat-screen television.

There is a split bathroom with a toilet and vanity on the left. On the right side of the central hall are a spacious shower stall and a separate wardrobe.

The kitchen has a three-burner stove with an oven as well as a microwave and a single basin sink. It also has multiple cabinets and cupboards to store cookware. There is a 6.7 cubic foot gas-electric refrigerator.

The front of the Globetrotter® 30RB spends the day as a spacious lounge with seating for up to six adults.

This is really nice for times when heavy rain might trap you inside. At night the lounge can then be reorganized into a 38″ x84” sleeping area.

This type of configuration is likely more preferable for families who need a separated sleeping area, rather than co-vacationing couples.

However, it is light and aerodynamic enough to be towed by a half-ton pickup truck. This is something you can’t always say for a sturdy dual axle travel trailer.

The Dutchmen AEROLITE is one of the more popular travel trailer campers in their diverse line. There are multiple floor plans, each with its own custom options available.

The 2923BH is one of the better places to start looking for families who prioritize two separate sleeping quarters.

The front of the camper has a master bedroom with a queen-size bed with separate interior and exterior doors. There is also a lot of storage, including a pass-through compartment.

The main living area has an entertainment center with a fireplace as well as a separate dinette. In the kitchen, you will find a refrigerator, a three burner range with an oven, an overhead microwave, and a dual basin sink.

The main living area also has a sofa that hides a tri-fold bed. It can be deployed to offer a separate sleeping area for a couple of a teenager.

In the rear of the travel trailer, there is a 52” X 74” double bed with its own separate wall.

The bathroom has a toilet and a sink with well-designed vanity. There is also a bathtub-shower combination stall.

Common Travel Trailer Terminology

There are a lot of marketing and proprietary terms thrown about by RV travel trailer manufacturers that can sometimes obscure what you really get.

Sorting through some of the more popular ones in advance will help you streamline your search as well as helping you prioritize features you want in an “Ideal” travel trailers with two bedroom.

This is a term you might hear being thrown around with travel trailers. They are especially popular with hunters, anglers, and families that have multiple children.

Some of the more popular models have a master bedroom in some form and a larger living area that can be transformed into a sleeping space for multiple people.

This might be an attractive feature for you. Still, if you are looking for a true “Two Bedroom” travel trailer camper, you probably want to tend away from “Bunkhouse” models.

The people sleeping in the bunkhouse area likely won’t have the privacy they prioritize. It’s also worth noting that most bunkhouse areas rarely have beds that can sleep two, which could be an issue if you frequently travel with another couple.

Tri-Fold Couch

This is essentially the more evolved version of the classic “Hide-a-Bed” that become all the rage in the 1980s.

As the name implies it spends the day as a standard couch in the RV’s primary living area. At night, you remove the cushions and pull the mattress and frame out in three contiguous sections.

You can rest easy knowing that most modern tri-fold couches use upgraded materials and engineering.

This makes them more comfortable and quieter than the old hide-a-beds that gave this type of sleeping accommodation a bad name.

Privacy might still be an issue with this type of sleeping arrangement. If you are traveling with a teen or another couple, you might want to consider investing in something like an opaque dressing screen to deploy at night.

This term refers to a travel trailer that can be used to transport ATVs, UTVs, and even snow machines.

When you get to your intended destination, you open up the back of the camper to take the small vehicles out. The rest of the camper is then converted into living accommodation.

There are some RV manufacturers who offer toy haulers with some type of fold-down, Murphy or pull out bed.

Though most just leave this spot open allowing you to sprawl out your interior living space. In a pinch, you could use this empty space in the back to set up an air mattress on a cot frame.

A simple curtain or dressing room partition can then serve as a temporary wall offering some added privacy

On Travel Trailers With 2 Bedrooms

As you can see, you can see, there are a lot of two-bedroom travel trailer options that are worthy of your consideration.

Some have two distinct sleeping areas or a bunkhouse room that can sleep, multiple people.

Your preferred level of privacy and the privacy needs of your fellow travelers will need to be an important factor before pulling the trigger on a specific unit.

If you’ve whittled your options down to one or two and you are still biting your fingernails, you might want to try renting one.

There are some dealerships and rental agencies who will allow you to do so, especially if you’ve shown interest in buying one of the units on their lot.

Of course, there will be some fees and insurance requirements that go with it.

Another option to consider is renting a similar unit through a second party or a peer-to-peer rental site like Outdoorsy or RVshare.

These networks allow you to connect with an RV owner who has the type of two bedroom travel trailer you are interested in. They will often let you rent it for cheaper than a dealership or rental agency.

It can also be a great way to “Pick Their Brain.” If possible, try to start up a conversation with them to see what things they like most about the unit you are interested in.

Many of these people even maintain a presence on the site’s message board forum.

Mapping Ukraine’s Surprise Invasion of Russia

After two and a half years of fighting a war on their own soil, Ukrainian forces are continuing to advance within Russia, as their surprise invasion of the Kursk region enters its third week.

Beginning early on Aug. 6, Ukraine quickly broke through thinly manned border defenses and has now captured dozens of Russian towns and villages, adding a new twist to a war that had largely settled into grueling, block-by-block fighting in towns in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk brought about one of the largest territorial changes since the first month of the war, when Russia rapidly advanced toward major Ukrainian cities. The head of Ukraine’s armed forces, Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, has claimed that Ukraine is in control of about 490 square miles of Russian territory.

If confirmed, that would represent roughly the same amount of land that Russian forces seized in Ukraine from January through July of this year, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has said that the aim is to create a “buffer zone” inside Russia alongside the border. He has given no specifics about the size of the area his military is aiming to seize.

This week, Ukraine struck bridges across the Seym River, a move that military analysts say could trap Russian troops between the river and the border with Ukraine.

At least three bridges have been damaged, which The Times was able to independently verify through satellite imagery and videos posted to social media.

It is unclear how many Russian troops are in the area, but satellite imagery from Planet Labs, a commercial satellite company, shows that Russia has built temporary pontoon bridges to allow its vehicles to continue to cross the river. One could be seen east of the town of Glushkovo on Aug. 17, with vehicle tracks visible nearby. Another was visible further along the river, just north of Glushkovo, on Aug. 21.

On Wednesday, Ukraine released videos of its forces striking these Russian pontoon bridges in Kursk with U.S.-supplied weapons.

Although Ukraine’s advances have slowed since the first days of its incursion, it continues to push forward, according to imagery verified by the Institute for the Study of War.

Satellite imagery from Planet Labs shows that Russia has built new defensive fortifications around 20 miles from Ukrainian positions in Kursk, near the E38 highway. The fortifications include trenches for troops to fire from, and anti-tank ditches, such as the one shown below.

While the Ukrainian military is gaining ground in Russia, it is losing it back home. The Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine is building momentum.

Russian troops are less than 10 miles from Pokrovsk, putting them in artillery range of the city, which had a population of about 40,000 before the war began and is a key transport hub. To the northeast, Russian troops are on the doorstep of Toretsk, and control most of Niu-York, footage verified by the Institute for the Study of War shows.

Military analysts say that one of Ukraine’s likely objectives in invading Kursk was to force Russia to divert troops away from eastern Ukraine to fight in Kursk, but so far the Kremlin has resisted. Instead, it has brought in reinforcements mainly from elsewhere in Russia, prioritizing its military objectives in Ukraine over a rapid response to the foreign incursion.
