MONTREAL – Cyclists will be in the spotlight in Montreal this weekend. Thousands of them will take part in the Tour la Nuit on Friday and the Tour de l’Île on Sunday, to officially launch the cycling season. Motorists, meanwhile, will have to plan their trips accordingly.
“The Festival Go Vélo is really a celebration where cycling is front and center,” says Jean-François Rheault, President and CEO of Vélo Québec, which organizes the festival.
The Tour la Nuit is “really a party”, continues Rheault. The event takes place as of 8 p.m. on Friday. Cyclists will be invited to pedal 24 kilometers through streets closed to traffic for the occasion, dressed in their finest luminous accessories.
“There’s a happy feeling of being able to ride in the city without interaction with cars. There’s a real sense of security and freedom. There’s a hyper-peaceful side to the idea of just being able to discover the city,” says Rheault.
The Tour la Nuit route will start in Maisonneuve Park, at the corner of Rosemont Boulevard. Cyclists will pass through the boroughs of Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie, Saint-Michel, Montréal-Nord and Saint-Léonard.

Ron Scardacchi from Connecticut, USA has taken part in seven Tour La Nuit’s so far, excited to be back after the height of the pandemic. Scardacchi says he feels a connection with those that participate “they speak French, I speak English,” he jokes.
“I’ve been talking about this at work for the past three or four weeks. No kidding. I’ve told them, I’m leaving early. on Friday, I’m leaving early. It is something that kind of brings in positive vibes and a good way to start the summer as well,” says Nora, this year’s Tour La Nuit being her second.
This year’s event, broke record’s as Rheault says they are expecting over 19,000 participants and on Sunday, they expect 17,000.
For families there, it’s an event that allows them to be together. One mother telling City News “We have fun, we are together, the weather is nice, it’s hot, so we have a lot of fun.”
For Jamie Lavoie, his third year being part of the event, he says it’s one for all, “I’m here to have fun with everybody. It doesn’t matter who you are, what colour you are, what language you speak doesn’t matter.”

Vélo Québec expects some 20,000 people to take part in the Tour la Nuit, and some 18,000 in the Tour de l’Île.

Tour de l’Île de Montréal on Sunday
The Tour de l’Île de Montréal will take place on Sunday, June 4. The event offers cyclists a 47-kilometer ride through the streets of the metropolis, which will be inaccessible to motorists. The activity will also start at Maisonneuve Park, at 9:15 a.m.

“It’s a party, yes, but it allows people to experience the city from a different point of view, and then sometimes to surpass themselves,” says the president of Vélo Québec.
Both activities will also end in Maisonneuve Park. DJs, inflatable games and other activities will entertain young and old alike.
“There will be a return of the Ferris wheel, which we left out during the pandemic. It’s really going to be a festive site,” promises Rheault.

With Tour de l'Île weekend pedalling into Montreal, drivers should plan their trips
Road closures begin friday night with tour la nuit, daytime event is planned for sunday.
Social Sharing
This weekend, Tour de l'Île will be pedalling through parts of Montreal, leading to fun for cyclists but headaches for some drivers trying to navigate certain areas of the city.
Things will kick off Friday night with the Tour la Nuit, starting at Maisonneuve park.
While the biking starts at 8 p.m., street closures will begin at 5 p.m. when Rosemont Boulevard closes between Viau Street and Pix-IX Boulevard in the city's east end.
From there, a long list of streets will close for blocks of time, some for several hours. For example, that first section will be closed until midnight. The night course covers 24 car-free kilometres through six boroughs.
A complete list of street closures and times can be found here.
The night tour will travel through boroughs such as Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Saint-Léonard, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, Anjou and Montréal-Nord.
A map of the route can be found here .
Then on Sunday, a different route is on offer for the daytime riders, giving them exclusive use of 47 kilometres of streets through seven boroughs.
The loop will go through areas such as Rivière-des-Prairies, Anjou, Montréal-Nord, Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Parc-Extension, Outremont, Plateau-Mont-Royal and Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie.
A complete list of street closures can be found here , with closures starting at 6 a.m. and running into the afternoon. The map can be found here . Cyclists start pedalling at 9:15 a.m., with activities throughout the route.
"As these events will change the usual traffic conditions, we invite you to plan your trips," organizer Vélo Québec says on its website .

Alternative measures have been put in place to ensure access to health-care facilities located near the Tour la Nuit and Tour de l'Île routes, Vélo Québec says.
The organization recommends getting information from the health facility, or by calling 811.
The organization also has a support service to help people navigate traffic. They can email or call for more information. The contact information is available on Vélo Québec's website .

Marine careers on tour: HMC Ships Goose Bay and Harry DeWolf take part in expo roadshow
From: National Defence
News release
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in partnership with other Government of Canada organizations and the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation is hosting the second annual Marine Careers Expo (MCE) this fall to connect with Canadians and showcase marine career opportunities at sea and ashore.
4 September 2024 – Ottawa – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in partnership with other Government of Canada organizations and the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation is hosting the second annual Marine Careers Expo (MCE) this fall to connect with Canadians and showcase marine career opportunities at sea and ashore. The Expo, which is free to attend, will take place in cities across Ontario, Québec and Newfoundland – kicking off in St. John’s on September 6th and 7th.
The Marine Careers Expo is an opportunity for Government of Canada organizations and other marine industry employers and institutions to showcase marine career and training opportunities. This year, His Majesty’s Canadian Ships (HMCS) Goose Bay and Harry DeWolf and our team will conduct port visits in eight cities in Atlantic Canada, along the St. Lawrence Seaway and Lake Ontario.
Canadians will be able to participate in ship tours, speak with sailors who have firsthand experience in these exciting and challenging careers, and to join activities aboard and ashore.
“The Marine Careers Expo is an excellent opportunity for the Canadians to meet our Royal Canadian Navy sailors and see firsthand the passion and professionalism that comes with a career in the Navy. I encourage all to take advantage of our port visits, to tour our ships, and learn about the excitement of a life at sea!” Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, Commander Royal Canadian Navy
“I couldn’t be prouder of the professionalism of our crews to be showcased during this second annual Marine Careers Expo. Sailors of HMCS Goose Bay are looking forward to share with Canadians what a career at sea means to them personally and what opportunities it has brought them. With numerous sailors hailing from the cities we will be visiting, it presents a unique opportunity for our team to engage with family, friends and other Canadians about what our chosen profession entails on a day-to-day basis.” Lieutenant-Commander Jeff Smith, Commanding Officer HMCS Goose Bay
“It is great honor for the HMCS Harry DeWolf team to be showcased during this second annual Marine Careers Expo. Each and every one of my shipmates have joined the Royal Canadian Navy to pursue a challenging and rewarding career at sea in service to Canada. We look forward to sharing our exciting experiences and our fine ship with our fellow Canadians.” Commander Jon Nicholson, Commanding Officer HMCS Harry DeWolf
“The Canadian Coast Guard is proud to join forces again this year with the Royal Canadian Navy and other maritime partners for the Marine Careers Expo. The Expo is a remarkable opportunity for Canadians to discover the rewarding and diverse careers in Canada’s maritime sector, including the various career paths within the Canadian Coast Guard, from nurses and engineers onboard our ships to search and rescue coordinators on shore. We look forward to meeting with Canadians at each of the port visits and inspiring the next generation of maritime professionals.” Mario Pelletier, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard
"The Expo shines an important light on the high-paying, in-demand careers that exist in Canada's vital marine industry - one that deserves more attention and talent. By expanding the MCE's reach to more communities, we're bringing job seekers and organizations together to bridge the gap in workforce development and inspire a new generation of professionals to join the marine sector." Julia Fields, Executive Director, Canadian Marine Careers Foundation
Quick facts
The Marine Careers Expo will begin in early September and end early November 2024. For a complete schedule of ports visited, please refer to the Marine Careers Expo webpage listed below.
The events will be public and free of charge - all are welcome to come learn and have some fun. HMCS Goose Bay and HMCS Harry DeWolf , alongside their Government of Canada partners, will be open to visitors in certain ports. There will be plenty of opportunities to see Canada’s vessels up close and connect with the highly professional and dedicated sailors who work onboard.
HMCS Goose Bay is a Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel (MCDV). MCDVs are multi-role vessels built in Canada and crewed by a combination of Regular and Reserve Force sailors and officers. The ship’s primary missions are coastal patrol, reserve training, law enforcement, search and rescue duties, and minesweeping.
HMCS Harry DeWolf is an Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV). AOPVs enhance the RCN ability to assert Canadian sovereignty in Arctic and coastal Canadian waters and support international operations. The ship’s primary missions are armed presence and surveillance operations, humanitarian assistance, emergency response and disaster relief both domestically and internationally, and search and rescue duties.

2023: Demi Vollering 2022: Ashleigh Moolman
Favorieten Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini (UAE Team ADQ)
Tijden Start: 11.35 uur Finish: 14.58 uur
Etappe 2, zaterdag 7 september: Chippis - Vercorin (101.9 km)
Favorieten Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) Juliette Labous (dsm-firmenich PostNL)
Tijden Start: 12.16 uur Finish: 15.01 uur
Etappe 3, zondag 8 september: Morges - Morges (144.2 km)
ARTICLE_IN_1
Favorieten Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) Vittoria Guazzini (FDJ-SUEZ)
Tijden Start: 11.25 uur Finish: 15.04 uur
Topfavorieten: Demi Vollering, Lotte Kopecky (beiden SD Worx-Protime)
Outsiders: Juliette Labous (dsm-firmenich PostNL), Neve Bradbury (Canyon//SRAM Racing), Évita Music (FDJ-SUEZ), Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek) Long shots: Pauliena Rooijakkers (Fenix-Deceuninck), Mavi García (Liv AlUla Jayco), Marlen Reusser (SD Worx-Protime), Sarah Gigante (AG Insurance-Soudal Team)

Administrative investigation into the situation of the two adapted package tour operators affected by the fire that occurred on 9 August 2023 in a Wintzenheim lodge
Publié le 19/08/2024 | Temps de lecture : 2 minutes
Christophe Itier and Frédéric Laloue
The General Inspectorate of Social Affairs (Igas) received a letter dated 14 August 2023 from the Minister of Solidarity and Families and the Delegated Minister in charge of Disabled Persons, to conduct an administrative investigation into the conditions for authorising and organising the stays of disabled persons who were victims of the fire in their lodges that occurred on 9 August 2023. This fire in two lodges located in the same building, in the locality known as La Forge in the municipality of Wintzenheim, caused the death of eleven people (ten holidaymakers and a professional companion).
In accordance with the letter of engagement, the report focuses on examining the organisation and operation of the two operators affected by the fire on 9 August: Association Idoine, whose headquarters are located in Besançon, and the simplified joint stock company (SAS) Oxygène, whose headquarters are in Lyon. The mission was to examine the administrative procedures and checks that these two adapted package tour operators (VAO) were subject to.
The mission did not examine the content and scope of the actions of the owner of the two lodges in the fire-damaged building, nor those of the mayor of Wintzenheim, which are outside the scope of its referral by the ministers, and are essentially the subject of a judicial investigation initiated by the judicial court of Paris.

History of Astrakhan Oblast
In ancient times, the territory of the Astrakhan region was crossed by trade routes of the Persians and the Arabs. In the 8th-10th centuries, the territory belonged to the Khazar Khanate. There is a hypothesis that Itil, the capital of the Khazar Khanate, was located on this territory. It was destroyed by Prince Svyatoslav in 965.
Later, Polovtsy settled on this land. In the first half of the 13th century, the Mongol-Tatars came to the area. After them, Tatars of the Astrakhan Khanate and Kazakhs became the main population of the region.
In 1556, during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, the Astrakhan Khanate was annexed to the Russian state and ceased to exist. Astrakhan krai became the southeastern military outpost of Russia. In particular, in 1569, the Turks unsuccessfully besieged the fortress of Astrakhan.
In the 17th century, trade, fishing and salt industries developed in the region. In the middle of the 17th century, the uprising of Stepan Razin took place on the territory of Astrakhan region. In 1722, near the mouth of the Kutum River, a shipyard called the Astrakhan Admiralty was built. In the 1730s-1740s, the processing of silk and cotton began here.
Astrakhan Oblast was created in 1943. The region gained its current borders in 1957.
