Premise [ ]

The official announcement stated that "the series will follow Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock, and Number One in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the USS Enterprise , as they explore new worlds around the galaxy." [1]

Executive Producer and Co-creator Akiva Goldsman told Variety , " We're going to try to harken back to some classical 'Trek' values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic. Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you've seen in either Discovery or Picard . ... I imagine it to be closer to The Original Series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece. " [2]

When talking to Deadline on 16 August 2020 Co-executive Producer Alex Kurtzman elaborated, " I think Strange New Worlds , under the guidance of [showrunners] Henry Myers and Akiva Goldsman, it's going to be a return in a way to TOS [ Star Trek: The Original Series ] . We are going to do stand-alone episodes. There will be emotional serialization. There will be two-parters. There will be larger plot arcs. But it really is back to the model of alien-of-the-week, planet-of-the-week, challenge-on-the-ship-of-the-week. With these characters pre-Kirk's Enterprise ... I think what people responded so much to in all three characters is this kind of relentless optimism that they have. And that they are at the young phase of their careers. " [3]

Production history [ ]

When the news of showrunner Alex Kurtzman 's five-year Star Trek development deal with CBS All Access was announced on 19 June 2018, a show dealing with Christopher Pike, Spock, and the USS Enterprise was not considered for inclusion in any Star Trek line-up. [7]

Star Trek: The Original Series characters, Christopher Pike , Number One , and Spock , were introduced for season two of Discovery and were signed only for that season. [8] [9] It prompted Anson Mount to quip with a "#WillActForFood" hashtag on his Twitter account, making it known that he and Spock performer Ethan Peck were on the job market again shortly after live-action production on season two had wrapped. [10] Following the positive reception to the second season of Star Trek: Discovery , fans circulated a petition in support more appearances of Mount as Captain Pike and Peck as Spock, including the idea of a full new series. [11] Mount expressed support for the fan petition, stating he felt "humbled and deeply touched by this amount of love" in an 14 April 2019 Facebook entry. [12] [13] Peck also expressed interest in returning to the role of Spock. [14]

Mount, Romijn, and Peck reprised their roles in three late 2019 season two episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks .

Inception [ ]

In January 2020, Kurtzman confirmed he and Akiva Goldsman were having "active conversations" about a new series involving the crew of the Enterprise . [15]

On 15 May 2020, CBS announced a new series "based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the USS Enterprise ." [16] The announcement included that Strange New Worlds would feature Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, all reprising their roles from the second season of Star Trek: Discovery .

Development [ ]

TRR : " Hide and Seek " presented " The Cage " as the pilot to this series, as opposed to Star Trek: The Original Series .

Prior to its premiere, Paramount+ specifically suggested that viewers could prepare for the launch of the new series by checking out the following DIS Season 2 episodes:

  • Episode 1 - " Brother "
  • Episode 8 - " If Memory Serves "
  • Episode 12 - " Through the Valley of Shadows "
  • Episode 14 - " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 "

StarTrek.com presented its own list of episodes to watch before the premiere. In addition to the aforementioned Discovery episode "Through the Valley of Shadows", this list of original series episodes served more as a primer for familiarizing or refamiliarizing viewers with the series' cast:

  • " The Menagerie, Part I "+" The Menagerie, Part II "
  • " Space Seed "
  • " Journey to Babel "
  • " Mirror, Mirror "
  • " The Deadly Years "
  • " A Private Little War "

In March 2021 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection premiered at retail. A new starship miniatures partwork and product line, it would have featured Strange New Worlds starships, combined with ships from Star Trek: Discovery (after the release of issue 33 of the DIS partwork ) and Star Trek: Picard . The line's manager indicated that CGI assets of SNW's starships had not yet been received from the show's producers, as of February 2021, which was not that surprising as actual production on the new series had yet to start at that point in time. [17]

Eaglemoss' bankruptcy on 5 August 2022 thwarted all intents to release Strange New Worlds starships and none were, save one. Replicas of Pike's USS Enterprise though, had previously been produced by the company as part of the Discovery partwork collection, as it had already debuted in that series.

Strange New Worlds review: Star Trek delivers the best show for a new generation

In a world of prestige TV, the Star Trek franchise is suddenly playing a very different game.

star trek brave new world

If you’ve never seen one minute of Star Trek, you can watch any of the first five episodes of Strange New Worlds , and you will not be confused.

As opposed to the majority of contemporary TV, Star Trek’s newest live-action series is not telling a serialized story, in which each episode is compulsory viewing. But that also doesn’t mean there isn’t something innately familiar about the crew of the Starship Enterprise — a charming blend of new characters and reimagining of old favorites , complete with infectious camaraderie.

With a stellar cast, Strange New Worlds proves smaller is better when it comes to Star Trek. While the Paramount+ series is more appealing to new and casual fans, it’s also a throwback that doesn't leave longtime fans behind.

A new kind of reboot

Because Strange New Worlds is a direct prequel to The Original Series and takes place in the previously established “Prime” timeline of the Star Trek Universe, calling it a “reboot” is a misnomer. This isn’t a continuity reboot for Star Trek, but it is an emotional one.

The feeling of Strange New Worlds is uplifting and optimistic. And despite an epic physical scope, it is also smaller than some of the more recent iterations of Star Trek. If there’s one massive difference between Strange New Worlds and Discovery or Picard , it’s that the stakes are much lower. This time, mercifully, the entire fate of the galaxy isn’t in the balance every single week.

“We’re maintaining an emotionally serialized element to the storytelling,” producer Alex Kurtzman recently said of the series. “But the episodes are self-contained.”

Without a doubt, this is the number one selling point of Strange New Worlds . Although this feels radical and new for live-action Star Trek, the animated comedy series Lower Decks has been doing self-contained episodes with emotionally serialized storytelling for two years. So, if you don’t want to view Strange New Worlds as a throwback to the episodic format of The Original Series (1966-1969) or The Next Generation (1987-1994), you could view it as a live-action Lower Decks , set in a pre-Captain Kirk timeline.

A dual identity

star trek brave new world

Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Spock (Ethan Peck) head into the final frontier.

After watching the first five episodes made available to the press, I can safely say Strange New Worlds keeps the promise of self-contained episodes. But comparing the series outright to The Original Series or The Next Generation would do it a disservice.

Like Lower Decks — or even J.J. Abrams’ films — Strange New Worlds is very aware of how “Star Trek-y” it is in a way that TOS and TNG weren’t. The Roddenberry-inspired optimism isn’t subtle and is occasionally a little more on-the-nose than the older shows. If someone wanted to argue that Strange New Worlds was over-correcting for the preponderance of dark storytelling in Picard and Discovery , there’s plenty of evidence for it.

But the feeling of optimism and the actual narrative content are two separate things. Star Trek has a strange reputation for being warm and fuzzy, even though some of its most standout episodes are dark as hell. As Rebecca Romijn told Inverse recently, the classic ‘60s Star Trek was simultaneously a mash-up of various sensibilities: “really funny, and really horrific and dark sometimes.”

“Strange New Worlds captures the same warm-fuzzy feeling of the older shows”

Strange New Worlds is similar, considering its pilot episode has more to say about contemporary issues than any other Trek pilot episode before it. This gives Strange New World a dual identity. On the one hand, it’s a tribute to an idealized notion of what Star Trek “should be” in a perfect platonic state. On the other hand, it’s just a well-made spin-off of Discovery Season 2, one that also doesn’t require the viewer to have seen any knowledge of Star Trek.

So, for the uninitiated new fan, Strange New Worlds is the perfect show to start with. And for longtime fans, the best way to think about it is this: Strange New Worlds following Discovery would be like if Deep Space Nine had come out before The Next Generation. A more traditional, uplifting version now follows the dark and gritty Trek.

A captivating ensemble

star trek brave new world

Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and Lt. Ortegas (Melissa Navia) on the Enterprise bridge.

Strange New Worlds captures the same warm-fuzzy feeling of the older shows more rapidly than other newer Trek. Sure, Discovery and Picard have a ton of unity and camaraderie, but neither show begins that way. Whereas, Strange New Worlds warps out of the gate with a GO TEAM feeling that’s utterly captivating. And the reason why is simple: The cast clicks.

Almost instantly, you feel like you’ve already met this cast. The nostalgia for the preexisting characters and the standalone story structure conjure a magic trick that makes these characters feel so familiar.

“It really became a very organic thing,” Melissa Navia tells Inverse . Navia plays Lt. Ortegas, the new helmsman of the Enterprise . “Ourselves and the characters all kind of started to mesh. What we’re hearing from everybody is that really comes across on screen; that we really dig each other, and we’re Starfleet.”

Babs Olusanmokun, who plays Dr. M’Benga in the series, agrees. “We have the discovery of our characters, individually,” he says. “And then when we come together, it changes. Just giving each other space to make our choices and play off each other’s choices.”

A big swing

star trek brave new world

La’an (Christina Chong) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) in the transporter room.

Strange New Worlds introduces some new characters, including a few who have not been officially revealed yet. And their presence in the show will shock longtime fans. In many cases, the new series spins assumptions we’ve had about characters and situations from TOS in entirely new directions. If you are a hardcore Trekkie, you may find yourself very surprised by new pieces of information we learn about preexisting characters.

Although the show might scan as a “safe” version of Star Trek that is less-in-the-Trekkie-canon-weeds than Discovery or Picard , it is taking some big swings with canon, which will doubtlessly ruffle some fan feathers even more than the J.J. Abrams reboots. That said, these new layers are almost always delivered with a wink or joke. Strange New Worlds knows what it's doing with the Trek lore at all times .

“...the most easy-breezy Trek in years.”

Star Trek has “gone back to basics” several times throughout its many incarnations. Strange New Worlds is the most literal attempt to do that, short of outright remaking episodes of The Original Series with new actors. The result is charming and slightly transgressive in its brazen retro-futurism. It will be a hit, but it will also piss some people off. Lest we forget, however, the motto of Star Trek isn’t about cautiously going. They say “boldly go” for a reason.

If you don't like Strange New Worlds , like the rest of Star Trek, the series doesn’t mind. Even at its most populist, Star Trek still feels like an insider thing. If you know, you know. And in that way, Strange New Worlds is the most easy-breezy Trek in years. It’s here to make new friends, for sure. But it’s not leaving behind its oldest fans either.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts its first episode May 5, 2022 on Paramount+.

There are few sci-fi franchises that match the brand recognition of Star Trek . More than 50 years have gone by since The Original Series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy unveiled itself to audiences around the world and to this day fans of the intergalactic adventures clamor for more content from the Starfleet. Those appetites were whetted by the latest journey through the final frontier, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Created by Akiva Goldsman ( Star Trek: Picard ), Alex Kurtzman ( Star Trek Into Darkness ), and Jenny Lumet ( Star Trek: Discovery ), this new chapter in the immense world of Star Trek follows Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise. They explore new worlds and voyage across the galaxy and encounter exciting new allies and enemies along the way. He is joined by his first officer, Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ), and the prolific Vulcan himself, Spock ( Ethan Peck ).

Strange New Worlds takes place a decade before the events of The Original Series . This version of Captain Pike should be familiar to Star Trek fans as the same version of the character from Star Trek: Discovery . Now that the crew of the USS Discovery has jumped into the future, this spin-off picks up from where that show’s Season 2 left off before the time jump and continues the timeline toward where The Original Series began. Captain Pike and his crew were featured in the second season of Discovery , but their story was just a small part of that show’s arc. This Enterprise crew did make a small comeback in three episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks , but with Strange New Worlds , Pike and the crew of the Enterprise get to shine in the spotlight as they venture onward and add even more richness to the vast Star Trek universe, and here's how you can follow the journey.

  • Trivia Until now, there has been much speculation about how many deaths there were in WW III. Pike has made it canon that 30% of the Earth's population - between 2.1 and 2.4 billion people were killed and 600,000 species of plants and animals were eradicated.
  • Goofs Chapel is able to make several crewmen resemble the native residents of Kiley 279 by injecting them with gene therapy based on the genetic code of the planet's inhabitants. As Starfleet has not made contact with the planet (other than the three missing officers from the Archer), there is no way she would have genetic material from its inhabitants to use in her work. However, even on 21st century Earth, complete genome sequences (and other biological information) are widely available online. Chapel could easily have accessed the planet's equivalent of the internet. Moreover, Una's ship could have had samples of biological material which she could have accessed.

Of course Star Trek looked to Buffy for its big musical: 'That was our bar'

Co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers tell EW how they pulled off "Subspace Rhapsody" on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

star trek brave new world

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody."

When it comes to musical episodes of television, few have done it better than Buffy the Vampire Slayer . The producers behind Star Trek had that pop culture event on the brain when they set out to make the sci-fi franchise's first-ever music-fueled extravaganza on Strange New Worlds season 2.

"That's one of the best made ones," series co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers tells EW of 2001's "Once More, With Feeling," in which Sarah Michelle Gellar 's supernatural warrior faces a demon of song and dance. "It was done very well. It's really smart and thoughtful. It has big heart. The only thing I will say that I distinctly thought differently was that they wrote their own music, and I knew that that was a little more than we could handle. But that was kind of like, let's challenge ourselves to be as good as the best of this [genre]. That was our bar."

As time went on, Myers realized they actually could write their own music, with help from Letters to Cleo rockers Kay Hanley and Tom Polce, who crafted the songs. "Subspace Rhapsody," the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 (now streaming on Paramount+), sees the likes of Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ), Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Spock (Ethan Peck), and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise breaking out into musical numbers after an encounter with a quantum probability field. They all find themselves operating by the rules of a parallel reality in which everyone sings all the time, which causes problems for anyone trying to hide their emotions, including La'an (Christina Chong) and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush). The problem gets bigger when it starts spreading to other spaceships.

"I'm a huge fan of musicals, but had no idea what it took to actually make one," says Akiva Goldsman, the other co-showrunner on Strange New Worlds . Myers had worked on musical episodes of Ugly Betty and The Magicians , but Goldsman was coming in fresh. "When we started on season 2, a small voice, like a gremlin kept going, 'Music. Musical. Musical.' And Henry kept going, 'Not yet. Not yet. Not yet,'" he continues. "We were going back and forth on the story, and we sort of knew where the character arcs were. Then, to our delight and terror, the idea of what we needed to do emotionally in episode 9 and the idea of a musical went hand in hand."

With a script written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff, the producers got to work on "Subspace Rhapsody" about six months ahead of filming, Myers estimates. Goldsman likes to say, "This episode happened in large part before it happened," meaning most of the execution went into prep, including dance rehearsals and singing lessons. Director Dermott Downs also wanted to shoot the episode like a musical, which means the shots are "a little more wide and you really see people doing things, you're not in their faces all the time," Myers explains. "It was a lot of work from a lot of people, but the one thing I remember waking up and thinking was that everyone will expect this to be silly. We should surprise them and have it be gut-wrenching and emotional."

Some of that can be credited to Gooding. It was clear to everyone from the start of the show that their Uhura actress had some pipes. An early episode of Strange New Worlds season 1 saw her singing out tones to activate a piece of alien tech. So, it's no surprise that the actress is the one to get the musical's big power ballad, "Keep Us Connected." "What we do like to do is write to our cast," Goldsman remarks. "It suddenly became clear that a lot of the folks who we work with had musical theater in their backgrounds or real musical training. The universe was conspiring to get us to throw down in that way."

Peck was less confident about pulling this off, Myers notes: "I don't think Ethan thought that he could do it, and he surprised everyone by having this crazy deep voice, the baritone, that was kind of beautiful."

Now that it's all come together, it almost feels like a miracle that it even happened. Goldsman looks back to when the news of what would become "Subspace Rhapsody" came up during the closed-door meetings with the other showrunners from across the active Star Trek series. "All I remember was people being like, 'Okay, sure,'" he recalls. "This is basically the tenor of all the [meetings], which is somebody will say a bunch of stuff and then somebody else will go, 'Wow, that sounds cool.' Subtext: 'Please don't f--- it up.'"

Goldman adds, "We were like, 'If we're gonna do this, we gotta do this.'" And so they did.

The Cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on What to Expect from Their Characters This Season

Everything you need to know to get ready for the Season 2 premiere next week!

Illustrated banner featuring the Season 2 cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

StarTrek.com

We're officially one week out from the highly anticipated second season premiere of the critically acclaimed original series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on June 15!

In Season 2, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise , under the command of Captain Christopher Pike , confronts increasingly dangerous stakes, explores uncharted territories and encounters new life and civilizations. The crew will also embark on personal journeys that will continue to test their resolve and redefine their destinies. Facing friends and enemies both new and familiar, their adventures will unfold in surprising ways never seen before on any Star Trek series.

StarTrek.com had the opportunity to speak with the series stars Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn ( Una Chin-Riley ), Ethan Peck ( Spock ), Jess Bush ( Christine Chapel ), Christina Chong (La’An Noonien-Singh), Celia Rose Gooding ( Nyota Uhura ), Melissa Navia (Erica Ortegas), and Babs Olusanmokun ( Joseph M’Benga ), as well as special guest stars Paul Wesley ( James T. Kirk ) and Carol Kane ( Pelia ) during a press junket. With their help, here's what you need to know about their characters this season!

The Fate of Number One

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The Charges Against Una Chin-Riley

The first season ended on a startling cliffhanger; Starfleet Command sends Captain Batel to the Enterprise . Captain Pike and Number One meet her in the Transporter Room; unfortunately, this wasn't the usual friendly visit. Apologetic for what she's about to do, Batel arrests First Officer Una and takes her into custody for violating the Federation's ban on genetic modifications; her Illyrian identity exposed.

Rebecca Romijn acknowledges, "The biggest question I got at the end of Season 1 from fans was, 'Is Una finished? Are we ever going to see her again?'" Thankfully, she assures us, "The first thing I would say is, 'I'll be back in Season 2. I shot Season 2. I was there.'"

"Una somehow makes her way back onto the Enterprise ," continues Romijn. "We know that Una does make her way back to the Enterprise , but we get to see, early in the season, how she does it."

Fans were thankfully given an extended first look , with the clip above, of Una's trial; the series' was not going to brush over her arrest.

"It's been a big burden for Una to carry this secret for so many years and to rely on Pike to give her asylum," adds Romijn. "And she carries a great deal of shame over that. Not over being an Illyrian. I think she's proud of her heritage, but she's very guilty about lying and living inauthentically. Going into Season 2 and seeing Una finally decide that she's going to live authentically and not hide anymore is a great release for her. You'll see a freer Una."

Captain Pike

A focused Christopher Pike sits in the captain's chair on the bridge and rests his chin on his left hand

For Captain Pike, the loss of his Number One is immense. Anson Mount explains, "It's not just like losing a crew member for Pike; it's losing a limb. A big part of Pike's ability to function as well as he does is because of Una. And he knows that. And she's not just his Number One, but she's a friend. So a lot is on the line."

The loss of his friend is not the only thing weighing on the Enterprise captain. His visit to a Klingon monastery on Boreth and the vision he saw from a time crystal continues to gnaw at him. While he has confided in Una and Spock, he has yet to divulge his tragic future to his girlfriend. When asked what we need to know about his character leading up to the second season premiere, Mount responds, "What's important is that the lingering question of when he's going to tell Captain Batel about his future is obviously there."

Spock sits in the captain's chair on the bridge

Most illuminating is Ethan Peck's insight to the typically unflappable Vulcan, "The two things I would like fans to know about Spock are that he is wildly uncertain of himself and is really doing his best to discover how he is most effective in Starfleet, and he will be very challenged in Season 2."

Despite James T. Kirk's recurring presence this season, both Peck and Paul Wesley reminds us that the friendship Spock and Kirk are known for has yet to occur yet. Wesley explains, "It's all very new, it's very fresh. It's the beginning. We don't dig in deep yet. It's kind of like we're dancing around. We haven't explored that sort of deep friendship that we all know, which is fun, because it's something to look forward to."

Peck tells us you can "expect a lot of curiosity between the two of them," and from Spock's perspective, "suspicion and caution for this sort of daring human person."

Kirk isn't the only character that piques Spock's interest. The trailer shows that the science officer will get more entangled with Christine Chapel. When pressed upon it, Peck divulges, "I suppose we can tease it. As usual, Spock is in deep inner conflict about who he is and what he's doing and how he's doing it. We will see more of that in his interactions with Nurse Chapel, and he will be challenged to further discover himself through their interactions."

The Medical Staff - Dr. M'Benga and Nurse Chapel

Christine Chapel looks over at M'Benga as he hands her a blue vial

Strange New Worlds gives us the opportunity to learn more about the backstory of two characters who originated in The Original Series — Joseph M'Benga and Christine Chapel.

Babs Olusanmokun hints, "You will discover more of M'Benga, go deeper into his history. You might get a kick out of that. There will be some revealed secrets, or just another side of the good doctor. More interesting, wild, unpredictable, 'Who is this guy?' type of thing."

Jess Bush echoes the fact, sharing, "Chapel has a brutal side, and you will learn a bit about her history with M'Benga. That is very illuminating."

"We're going to get a sense of their history, the genesis of the relationship," elaborates Olusanmokun. "How they met, and we go deeper into their relationship. The things you've seen in Season 1 will make more sense in terms of how these two people came to work together and respect each other so much and have each other's back."

Opposites Attract? La'An and James Kirk

La'An and James Kirk look out the window ahead of them in shock

Christina Chong is excited for her character La'An this season, stating, "She's growing. She's not the same La'An as Season 1. She's evolving, opening up her heart, slowly learning to trust, and that she can do things that we didn't know she could do."

As for Paul Wesley, he's hesitant to reveal too much, other than to highlight that the version of Kirk in the first season was an alternate timeline Kirk. On the captain of the Farragut , Wesley notes that we'll meet "actual canon Kirk," before teasing in the third episode, "I get to bring out some of those Kirk mannerisms and some of that charm and fun we all associate with the character of Kirk. I get to have some pretty historical significant moments on the Enterprise ."

What can we expect from a Noonien-Singh and Kirk interaction? According to Wesley, "Kirk and La'An are oil and... They're very different; Kirk is very cavalier and kind of charismatic and fun. La'An is quite serious, and so I think he brings out this little bit of color in her because she's quite tormented. I think she smiles for the first time in a while, which it's quite lovely to see. They bring out some qualities in one another that are complementary, I would say."

The teaser trailer hints of some attraction , at least from La'An's side. Wesley's comment about their dynamic as "oil and water" amuses Chong, with her noting, "That's a nice way to put it. 'Bittersweet,' I would say, is the word. It's given and then it's taken away."

At comms, Uhura looks over at touches her earpiece

Celia Rose Gooding reflects on how much Nyota Uhura has endured thus far, "We are going to continue to learn about her and continue to learn how she processes this experience of being a Starfleet officer. We're going to talk about the events of Season 1 and her losing Hemmer in such a really heartbreaking way. We're not just going to sweep that under the rug and act like it didn't happen. We're going to talk about it and we're going to talk about it until there is nothing to say anymore."

"We're really honoring the humanity in Uhura and honoring the fact that there's no way you could go through something like that and just be fine," emphasizes Gooding. "There's more that you have to unpack in order to grieve something like that properly, and we sort of witness that. We see what Hemmer's death really brings up in her in reflection to what death and loss and mourning means to Uhura as an avoidant person in this chapter of her life. We're learning that avoidance is not really an option."

Not only that, we'll see Uhura open herself up more. "Uhura has a lot to learn from her superior officers," says Gooding. "They have a lot to offer her, especially when it comes to just what it means to being a seasoned vet in Starfleet and the dynamics of the things you have to process in quick, fast feat. We learn that she really, really appreciates having an opportunity to bounce her emotions off of someone who has been in her shoes before, to talk to someone who has been an ensign, and has probably seen death and witnessed it and have had to find their ways through it in their own way."

"So Uhura's doing the right thing," Gooding concludes, "instead of just relying on herself all the time and forcing her to keep her feelings down. When those feelings aren't able to be contained anymore, she turns to her superiors and asks for help as she should, and she receives it as she should. In the grand scheme of canon, fans are really going to appreciate this is how [Uhura and Kirk's] relationship starts, especially because they know what the future of their relationship looks like. It's going to make a lot of sense to people who know the canon, and it's going to introduce dynamics that are long-standing to new fans."

Fancy Flier Ortegas

At the helm, Erica Ortegas leans forward

Melissa Navia wants viewers to know that they've "heard them loud and clear." And with that, they're going to be getting more Erica Ortegas in Season 2.

"We're going to get that backstory that everyone feels they did not get enough of in Season 1. And everything you loved about her and about the crew in Season 1, we've only ramped it up in Season 2. Season 1 was excellent. Season 2 is even better," Navia hypes.

Sharing her gratitude for the Star Trek community, Navia reveals, "We knew that we had a really special show that came out of the fans' love for Anson and Ethan and Rebecca's portrayal of these legacy characters. And so we knew that fans were going to be very excited for what we were doing. It also put a bunch of pressure on us, but it was good pressure. That's how great things come about."

"I always say that when we were finished filming Season 1, I thought there was plenty of Ortegas because that was my focus because I was playing the character. But hearing from fans that they wanted to learn so much more based on just the little that they got to see of her in Season 1, that to me was everything. It's a testament to the writing and to what we did as a cast and a crew. I can't say enough that I'm very thankful to the fans for shouting it from the rooftops that Ortegas is a welcome addition to the world of Star Trek ."

In a first look that was revealed last year , Ortegas expresses her interest in going on an away mission, which the latest full trailer reveals she finally gets her wish. Commenting on that, Navia says, "I kind of love that after that trailer came out, nobody was talking too much about the fact that, oh my god, Ortegas is finally on a shuttle going on an away mission, and she's part of the landing party. It was almost like, yeah, Ortegas is flying, and being amazing, and doing stuff that is making Pike really nervous."

"To me, it spoke to the fact that we've embedded so much this idea that Ortegas is an excellent pilot who Pike trusts so much," reflects Navia. "And that was just a little version of everything that everyone so far knows about Ortegas. And nobody's really seen what happens afterward. Like, oh no, she's just flying the shuttle like she does and Pike kind of wishes he was anywhere else, but he trusts her. I'm excited for fans to see that episode, which episode that'll be, who can tell?"

Chief Engineer On Board

Carol Kane as Pelia sits in Pike's Ready Room with her hands clasped in front of her

During Star Trek Day 2022 , fans learned that the incomporable Academy Award-nominee Carol Kane was joining the second season as Chief Engineer Pelia, who's described as "highly educated and intelligent, the Enterprise 's new senior engineering officer suffers no fools. Pelia solves problems calmly and brusquely, thanks to her many years of experience."

Kane reveals this surprising role is her introduction into the sci-fi world, "It was so unexpected that somebody would ask me to be on Star Trek . It was just so delightful."

"Then I read the character and I love the fact that she has been around so long and has so much wisdom and so much technical knowledge," Kane continues, "I'm the teacher of the engineers," before teasing that Season 1's fan-favorite Hemmer was one of her pupils.

Kane notes that while she's been working since she was 14 years old, she's "never seen a set that big," which amazed her with its scale. On being a part of this production with the cast, and taking on the challenges of a sci-fi role, she cheekily states, "It's exciting. I don't think it gets old. I get old, but it doesn't."

The cast definitely could not get enough of Kane's presence. Romijn tells StarTrek.com, "We were all pretty starstruck when she arrived, and she has such a funny way about her that seems so not Star Trek , but somehow it's perfect. It somehow works beautifully within our world. And she's absolutely hilarious. She's a real joy to work with, and she's got a very, very interesting way about her. And she's got a real innocence about her. She doesn't pretend to know anything about Star Trek , and yet she's a perfect Star Trek character."

Bush has nothing but praise for her new colleague, "For someone who has done so much in the way of amazing work, she's got no ego, and she moves through the world with such an innocent sense of wonder, always open, so porous and open and humble. And that is so beautiful that that is something that has been preserved through such a long successful career. And she just has folded perfectly into our mix. We love her."

Peck echoes Bush, adding, "I second that. She's just like this chaotic, bubbling stew of excitement and talent and you never know what she's going to bring in any given take. And I think that she's a really fun partner-in-crime for Spock."

Marvel Re-Edits Captain America: Brave New World Trailer to Remove Presidential Assassination Attempt

Gordon Jackson

In light of recent events , it appears Marvel has quietly released a revised edition of its Captain America: Brave New World trailer removing a scene showing Isaiah Bradley’s attempt on President “Thunderbolt” Ross’s life. Take a look:

Enter a brave new world. Marvel Studios' #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld , only in cinemas February 14, 2025. pic.twitter.com/ikNQHmIuSd — Marvel India (@Marvel_India) July 23, 2024

Now, contrast it with the original trailer, here. We’ve cued it up to the appropriate moment:

As you can see, this updated version now shows Bradley attacking everyone who is not the president during his rampage in the White House. Notably, Marvel’s U.S. accounts have yet to either remove the original trailer or share this newly edited take, leaving the remix solely for the benefit of international audiences. Again, an interesting choice.

As we all know, sometimes something will happen in the news and the entertainment world has to pivot with programming that feels too eerily reflective of current events. It’s even already happened with this particular news story , as fans of The Boys can attest.

At the end of the day, though, Captain America is a superhero owned by Marvel and Disney, companies whose interests are mostly in maintaining brand loyalty, not rocking the boat with up-to-the-minute discourse. Regarding the edit, io9 has reached out to Disney for comment or clarification but did not hear back as of publication. We’ll update this post if or when we hear back.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters February 14, 2025.

Update, July 23, 1:38 p.m.: A Disney spokesperson told io9 that after the event on July 13, several adjustments to the trailer were made before it was distributed to theaters.

This is not how Chakotay pictured his retirement.

WARNING: Spoilers below!

“You are never getting my ship off this planet.”

On a sandy planet, a marooned Captain Chakotay montages his way through ten years of eating fish eggs on fruit (gross) and carving a chess board populated by his fallen crew, including Adreek , who’s flown the coop for the last time. Too soon? Arriving via Wesley Crusher’s time stuff, the prodigies are excited to see Chakotay and the Protostar, although both are looking worse for wear. This cynical Chakotay is unimpressed with their tale of time monsters and paradox fixing. He stranded his ship on Ysida so the Vau N’Akat Living Construct could never threaten Starfleet and he isn’t going to let some “time-traveling misfits” change that, even with his Holo-Janeway arguing for compassion. Reluctantly he lets them inside to weather an ion storm, where they discover he bricked the Protostar by ejecting the proto-core and draining all the fuel. Dal finally has had enough and calls Chakotay a broken old man who has given up. Harsh, but true.

star trek brave new world

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards recommends not leaving your ship out to rust.

“We need to fix a captain.”

Holo-Janeway tells the kids how Chakotay lost his spirit, especially after Adreek reconsidered their self-marooning and was lost trying to find a new source of antimatter. Inspired by the fallen first officer, they take up his plan and start fixing up the ship, with enough sunny Starfleet spirit to thaw the cynic. When Dal is lost during a storm, Chakotay takes the Runaway, joined by Gwyn, Pog, and Murf, along to be cute for security. The captain reveals Dal is in more danger than they realize as this “nightmare” planet also has giant burrowing eel monsters. Great. Dodging the lightning creatures, Chakotay starts to get his mojo back as he skillfully pilots the flying car through a twisting subterranean maze. They track Dal’s badge to a cavern where he has found Adreek’s final resting place. Chakotay is astonished to discover his friend’s last act was to successfully harness enough antimatter to fuel the Protostar. Well, that’s a real feather in his cap. Sorry. Returning to the Protostar, Chakotay is a new man, inspired by his first officer’s sacrifice and this young crew’s enthusiasm. After setting Adreek to rest and getting assured Starfleet is safe from the Construct, Chakotay agrees it’s time to empty this nest. Okay, that’s the last one.

star trek brave new world

Sorry, Pog, no more bird puns.

“To save the future, they must do it alone.”

Meanwhile, the crew of the Voyager is picking up the pieces from the harrowing battle with the Loom, and Janeway is starting to have second thoughts about entrusting the future to the kids on the word of a “Starfleet expat.” Noum helps settle her mind by putting her in touch with Dr. Crusher, who has faith her son is doing the right thing, but would it kill him to call once in a while? On Ysida, they are putting Adreek’s crazy plan into action, transforming the Protosar into a boat to sail across the vapor ocean to a source of fuel for the warp drive, a cloud of deuterium… the peanut butter to the antimatter’s chocolate. After another montage, the ship is released from the dunes, with a little assistance from Chakotay who gives the kids a lesson in levers . Dal and the captain continue to clash and the kid remains cocky when put in charge of the important jib , but when their makeshift ship almost founders, Gwyn and Chakotay have to step in to guide them through safely. The abashed Dal gets demoted to rope coiling duty. Welcome to the navy, kid.

star trek brave new world

Maj’el and Gwyn didn’t expect Starfleet training to involve this many ropes.

“We’re at the mercy of the storm.”

Dal’s funk runs deeper than just learning discipline. He confesses to Chakotay he is questioning his destiny after getting a glimpse of his future. The captain shares some life lessons learned from his time as Janeway’s number one, but bonding time is cut short when they find themselves heading into the violent eye of the storm. The ship gets battered as they lose their sail, with the last bit of power used to open up the fuel scoops . Their only hope is to manually steer to the target so one and all (even poor Rok, who is terrified) can brave the storm and get the ship on course. Just as the Bussard collectors start doing what they do, it’s old man overboard. Without hesitation, Dal jumps into the maelstrom, but the kid has to release his lifeline and the gang reels it in empty, turning a moment of triumph into potential tragedy. But Dal isn’t a quitter; he grabs unconscious Chakotay and hitches a ride to the surface with an accommodating lightning eel. Back inside, the fuel gage maxes out and the engines fire up. The Voyager-A is still way far away and the protodrive is kaput, but the gang is filled with way too much Star Trek optimism to worry… that’s the next episode’s problem. For now, just cue the theme music and let this bird soar… Okay, that one doesn’t count.

star trek brave new world

Riker told me things get better after you grow a beard.

The past echoes the future.

The second half of the season begins with a slow burn, leading to a big bang of a two-part episode. After spending so long seeking Chakotay (with a brief out-of-time visit earlier on), the show took a chance by subverting expectations for what should have been a triumphant moment. Instead of finding a grateful Starfleet officer, they discover this disheveled shell who has given up on life, an unexpectedly dark twist that still works. But this was no Heart of Darkness , as all the kids had to do was rally what they had learned since Tars Lamora with the enthusiasm and optimism gained under their Holo Janeway, turning this into an adventure more akin to Flight of the Phoenix , utilizing a few well-crafted montages and frenetic action sequences to tell a movie’s worth of story in around 44 minutes. The opening sequence was especially impactful, forgoing a traditional captain’s log with an extended series of moments to convey the sense of time, adding context to this different Chakotay, now 10 years older, mourning the loss of Adreek and his crew. The episodes were replete with many examples of stunning visuals, accentuated with stirring music, carrying the narrative when words weren’t necessary.

star trek brave new world

Think this is weird, ask Admiral Janeway about the time she turned into a lizard.

There still was plenty for Robert Beltran to work with in his best episode of the series yet as he took us through quite a journey back to that Star Trek hope. Right there with him is Brett Gray, as this two-parter is just as much about Dal, who is running through a parallel arc and crisis of confidence. And when you scratch a little deeper, you can see how all season long, Prodigy has been creating parallels with his relationship and potential future with Gwyn and Chaktotay’s relationship and past with Janeway. This makes Chakotay’s talk about his father, his history with the Maquis, and his time on the Voyager far more than just canon references, using the lore to weave together the story of his life and help Dal with what he has learned from it. This is all pretty deep stuff that treats both the new audience and the old fans with respect. With so much focus on Dal and Chakotay, there wasn’t a lot for the other characters to explore, but they helped keep things light with all the drama going on between Dal and Chakotay. And Kate Mulgrew was a highlight playing both Admiral Janeway and a distinctly new version of Hologram Janeway.

star trek brave new world

Which son were you calling about? Oh wait, forget I said that.

A highlight for fans will be the cameo of Gates McFadden, reprising her TNG role of Dr. Beverly Crusher, who sounds great, but the character design didn’t really capture the original character in the same way as other legacy characters in the series. And this wasn’t really a cameo: As Janeway was going through her own crisis of confidence handing the future off to the kids based on Wesley’s word, his mom was the perfect person to set things right, giving the brief scene emotional punch, especially when Crusher talked about how Janeway is like a mother to her crew. And the look on Beverly’s face when she talked about how the Romulan refugee crisis is taking up all of Jean-Luc’s time spoke volumes. This little moment set between Nemesis  and the third season of  Picard deftly wove in bits of their bigger story, making this show feel more tied into that larger Star Trek Universe, which is important to us fans. But the show also continues to build its unique voice, doing things in this episode we have never seen in Star Trek before, including making that vision of “Horatio Hornblower in space” realized—and pretty amazing.

star trek brave new world

Okay Chakotay, I’ll let you sit in the captain’s chair.

Final thoughts

This kickoff for the second half of the second season feels like the show is once again leveling up, with the show maturing just as much as the characters. Watching these two episodes back-to-back seems to be a must as this tells a single, emotional story of a ship and a captain (and a potential future captain) being reinvigorated.

star trek brave new world

Does this count as a refit?

  • Stardate 61898.2  (as of Part II).
  • The Protostar’s Runaway vehicle Pog fixed was first introduced in season 1. It was left on Ysida, but they can always make another with the ship’s vehicle replicator .
  • Ysida is “Class P,” a planetary classification  previously established Star Trek: Star Charts and other Trek books, but became film/TV canon for the first time in this episode.
  • “Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the whole world” is a quote attributed to the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes . There have been two different USS Archimedes ships in Starfleet.
  • Admiral Janeway indicates she has met Dr. Crusher before, referencing “the Shinzon incident” (from Star Trek: Nemesis ), set six years prior. Janeway did appear in the film, but only in a communication with Captain Picard.
  • Dr. Crusher says she hasn’t seen her son in “years,” possibly not since the Riker/Troi wedding depicted in Nemesis .
  • Chakotay calling the Protostar the “HMS Protostar” is reminiscent of Dr. McCoy renaming a captured Klingon Bird of Prey the “ HMS Bounty ” in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home .

Chakotay got more out of this show than he did in 7 years of Voyager.

Happy to say that I much preferred this two-parter (esp. Part 1) to the mid-season finale. Airlock me if you must, but I’ll take the opening montage depicting Chakotay’s long years of exile with only a hologram of his former captain for company, along with the heartfelt sendoff for his own first officer, over a chase by cartoon monsters any day. Seeing the Protostar under sail just added to the coolness. I’ll never stop thinking of “Prodigy” as a kid’s show, but when it’s on its game it’s a damn fine one.

Excellent two parter! I loved Chakotay in these episodes and jist really brought back the more cynical and hardened Chakotay. I describe him as the Luke Skywalker/Last Jedi version of the character.

I loved him and Dals relationship here. But how they scienced their way off the planet was the best part. This is the kind of stuff we live for in Star Trek. Again, the show designed for 8 year olds.

But poor Adreek though. 😥

Also loved the cameo by Beverly. That was a nice touch. I loved all the two partners this season and this one is probably my second favorite.

The gradual convincing of Chakotay was very well depicted. I’m delighted by the redemption of the character through this show.

And yet another well-realized alien planet. This show is so good with strange new worlds.

I remarked a week ago we are seeing way more strange new worlds this season on this show than the two seasons of Strange New Worlds.

I know with live action comes budget issues (and it was very obvious season 2 had a smaller one) but at least show a few new planets every season.

And the other benefit of animation is that the environments are so seamlessly integrated, you don’t stop to do more than marvel. With live action often there’s an inevitable commentary on the location filming which is almost always adjacent to LA or Toronto, or now we’re becoming experts on AR walls instead of judging how effective the Planet Hell rock formations were used in a given week.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage r Home

WHY do you guys keep calling it that???

Also, bearded Chakotay is WORLDS better than shaved Chakotay! 😉👌

What I found interesting in this episode is that Admiral Janeway, with some difficulty, was able to find and talk to Beverly. What this tells us is that if Admiral Picard really wanted to find and talk to Beverly, he could have, at least during this time period. This scene ends up being a bit of a criticism of Picard, perhaps unintentionally, but a criticism nonetheless.

Really enjoying watching these with our 8yo!

Kate Mulgrew was fabulous in this episode; I love the way she makes Admiral Janeway a slightly different person from Hologram Janeway. She’s so very good!

Robert Beltran, on the other hand, was adequate. He wasn’t terrible, by any means, but I thought he was just okay.

Did Chakotay inherit his father’s hat? The hat chakotay wears seems similar to Kolopak’s.

Captain america 4 needs to skip a 16-year-old mcu trend to avoid the ultimate hulk insult.

I'm Convinced The MCU Is About To Overcome The Last Problem Stopping World War Hulk From Happening

Don't worry, the mcu set up red hulk's fatal weakness 8 years ago, red hulk’s captain america 4 debut is explained in dark mcu theory.

  • Red Hulk and the Leader's survival in Captain America: Brave New World is crucial for a future Hulk showdown.
  • MCU villains tend to meet an early demise. Making an exception for Captain America; Brave New World 's two main antagonists would honor Hulk's absence.
  • The MCU has already used several Hulk enemies in other heroes' stories. Apart from Red Hulk and the Leader, characters such as Bi-Beast and Doc Samson are candidates for Hulk's future antagonists.

Hulk's absence in Captain America: Brave New World can be compensated by breaking an already outdated MCU trend. Phase 5's upcoming Captain America: Brave New World features numerous important plot points, including the world's reaction to Tiamut's appearance, Sam Wilson's first official on-screen mission as Captain America following his acceptance of the Captain America mantle in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier 's ending , Samuel Sterns' return, and President Ross' transformation into the monstrous Red Hulk, not to mention the appearance of minor antagonists like Giancarlo Esposito's mystery mercenary. Clearly, Captain America has a lot to worry about.

By Captain America: Brave New World , Sam Wilson has taken up the Captain America mantle . Classic Captain America antagonists like Red Skull, the Winter Soldier, Crossbones, and Batroc are no longer threats in the MCU, but new villains such as Red Hulk and the Leader require the MCU's new Captain America to intervene. While Captain America will take care of these new threats, however, it would seem logical for Hulk — who has similar abilities, a similar origin, and a common story in The Incredible Hulk — to face off against Gamma-powered criminals, or at least have a small role in Captain America: Brave New World .

Red Hulk And The Leader Need To Survive Brave New World To Fight Hulk

Hulk's battle against red hulk and the leader is long overdue.

The MCU has had to sideline Bruce Banner and Hulk due to Hulk's movie distribution rights , owned by Universal since the 1990s. Unfortunately, this meant that Hulk and his related characters could only be used in supporting roles in MCU movies and shows. In 2024, Captain America: Brave New World features major Hulk villains Thaddeus Ross and Samuel Sterns, but Hulk is nowhere to be seen. Hence, the least Captain America: Brave New World could do for Hulk is spare Red Hulk and the Leader's lives so they can face him in a future MCU installment.

The MCU’s Main Villains Tend To Die Too Quickly

Not many marvel villains survive their first appearance.

For sixteen years and across more than 30 projects, Marvel Studios has established a clear trend for MCU villains. Out of 45+ major MCU antagonists , only twelve have survived the events of their respective movies or shows . Abomination, Red Skull, the Winter Soldier, Baron Zemo, Vulture, Yon Rogg, Agatha Harkness, Taskmaster, Arishem, Kingpin, Namor, the High Evolutionary, and Spider-Man: No Way Home's multiversal villains are still alive. Meanwhile, popular villains such as Killmonger, Hela, and Wenwu — as well as villains with wasted potential such as Ronan, Gorr, and Ultron — have all died soon after their introduction.

Red Hulk and the Leader's deaths would only be a disservice to Hulk in his absence

Captain America: Brave New World marks Samuel Sterns' second MCU appearance and Thaddeus Ross' fourth MCU appearance, but it also marks the first time they will appear in their Gamma-powered form. It could be easy for Captain America: Brave New World to end President Ross' character arc with his transformation into the Red Hulk, killing him off as the ultimate sign of the character's hubris. Likewise, Samuel Sterns could also be killed before his plan to destabilize the world succeeds. However, Red Hulk and the Leader's deaths would only be a disservice to Hulk in his absence.

The MCU’s Hulk Is Already Running Out Of Comic Book Villains

Other marvel heroes have fought hulk's comic book enemies.

Before Captain America: Brave New World turned Red Hulk and the Leader into Captain America antagonists, the MCU had already taken various Hulk villains and given them to other characters . For instance, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania revealed that Kang the Conqueror transformed Darren Cross into MODOK, who had a grudge against Ant-Man. Instead of villains like the Leader and MODOK, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law 's version of the Intelligencia is composed of Jennifer Walter's online harassers. Years before that, Agents of SHIELD provided a new take on Glenn Talbot and the Absorbing Man, who inevitably became enemies to the titular team.

President Ross' transformation into the Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World could help kick off the MCU's World War Hulk adaptation.

Now, there's a limited number of classic Hulk villains who can face the Avenger in future MCU installments. For example, Bi-Beast could pose a considerable threat to Hulk's strength in a future movie, and he has already been teased by a blink-and-you-miss-it Sakaar easter egg in Thor: Ragnarok . Ty Burrell's Dr. Leonard Samson , who only appeared briefly in The Incredible Hulk , could finally return with a Gamma upgrade in the near future as well. Still, a fight between the Leader, Red Hulk, and Hulk after Captain America: Brave New World is a hypothetical scenario that's simply too exciting to ignore.
