Frequently asked questions

The priority wharf for berthing cruise ships is called the Channel Berth at Carrington. Sometimes other berths are used due to operational reasons. Refer to the map below.

The Channel Berth was commissioned as the Port’s cruise berth in 2010, recognising that cruise ships were growing larger and needed a deepwater berth that was easy to access, with plenty of land available for coach parking. It can handle vessels up to 320 metres in length, such as the 317 metre long  Celebrity Solstice , the longest ship to visit the Port.

More than 30 coaches can park at the Channel Berth, which enables passengers to quickly transit from the ship to attractions across the Hunter region and by shuttle to the Foreshore of our vibrant City.

Along the way, you’ll get to soak in picture-perfect views of Newcastle and the coastline.

Nobby’s Beach and Lighthouse

Tour Fort Scratchley

Fort Scratchley was constructed in 1882 and stands prominently over the city near the mouth of the Hunter River. Thanks to its high vantage point, it was used to look out for any attacks upon the city. Fort Scratchley was the only coastal fort in Australia that fired on an enemy ship during World War II, when it protected the city from an attack on Newcastle from Axis forces in June of 1942. Today, those on Newcastle cruises can tour the fort and even witness the firing of a gun in the fort’s battery that takes place daily at 1pm (except Tuesdays, when the fort is closed).

The 294-m vessel sailed into Newcastle Harbour on Tuesday, August 9, marking the start of the 2022-2023 season which includes 11 scheduled calls, an estimated ~17,000 passengers, and is due to run until April 2023.

Coral Princess is one of 4 ships making their maiden calls at Newcastle this season - together with Viking Mars , Silver Muse , and Grand Princess . Coral Princess has max passenger capacity 2390 (plus 900 staff/crew) and will visit Newcastle 5 times - between August 10th and September 25, 2022.

Throughout the season, Newcastle Cruise Volunteers are expected to be on hand to welcome cruisers. The team of 15 volunteers will provide local advice to ensure tourists get the most out of their time in the port city.

Glen Hayward (Newcastle Port's executive manager marine & operations) said it was wonderful to welcome cruise ships back to the Port for the first time since the start of the COVID crisis.

Hayward added that measures would be in place during visits to reduce the risk of COVID transmission and keep volunteers, guests, and the community safe.

“In line with NSW and Federal Government guidelines, all passengers will be required to undertake a Rapid Antigen Test prior to disembarking and are encouraged to wear masks while transferring to and from Channel Berth.”

An Unforgettable Cruise On Newcastle Harbour

Experience Our Working Harbour Onboard William the Fourth

Enjoy the sights and sounds of a beautiful working harbour, aboard an authentic replica of one of the first Australian-built cargo ships that worked the harbour in the early days.

This Is How Experiences Are Made

Nowhere else can you feel you are going back in time. The unique character of William the Fourth inspires all forms of emotion. Enjoy the serenity or soak up the grand vistas of the Newcastle city panorama from the harbour. You know this is not like any other voyage as you sense what life was like for our pioneer forefathers. We know you will never forget it and we will see you again.

A Brief History Of William The Fourth

William the Fourth is an accurate operational replica of Australia’s first steam powered ocean-going paddlewheel ship.

When convict settlement was established at Newcastle from 1801, ships were the only form of transport. Within 30 years the settlement of fertile lands along the Hunter River and a growing coal trade – Australia’s first significant export industry, enabled the era of steam ships. In 1831 – when the Australian Agricultural Company began to have a profound impact on Newcastle, a shipyard was established at Clarencetown, taking advantage of the excellent timbers, to construct Australia’s first steam-powered ocean-going ship – William the Fourth , to operate between Sydney and the growing settlement inland from the ‘Green Hills’ now known as Morpeth.

There were almost no roads, and the graveyard of shipwrecks at the harbour entrance is testimony to the many hazards our local pioneers faced. The ship was a general carrier, transporting produce to the markets in Sydney and every product the settlers needed to live in the valley. It’s hard for us to imagine the hardships they faced, but their enterprise and determination developed the characteristics that are still in our blood today. By its very unique nature William the Fourth still serves as a faithful testimony to that tough pioneering and maritime heritage.

9 18

The replica William the Fourth was constructed as a community 1988 Bi-Centenary Project at Raymond Terrace, at a cost of $1.5 million and was launched on 26 September 1987 by Mrs Hazel Hawke. During construction hundreds of people purchased engraved copper nails – still in the ship’s hull, and since then thousands more have enjoyed the experience of the ship whilst learning of our maritime heritage. The replica operated commercial cruises on Newcastle Harbour and the Hunter River for 14 years until a boiler leak put it out of service in 2001. It was earmarked to be dismantled.

In 2008 a community-based organisation, William the Fourth Inc. was formed to take ownership from Newcastle City Council and complete a total restoration of the ship and return it to service. Difficulty in raising funds delayed the restoration for 10 years but with generous public and corporate support, work valued at over $650,000 was completed without incurring debt. As part of the full refurbishment a powerful diesel engine with propeller, as well as bow thruster were installed to maximise availability and overcome the issues presented by steam and paddlewheel propulsion (whilst retaining and simulating the steam experience).

William the Fourth provides the ideal platform to showcase the beauty of the city from the harbour.

It is available as a floating display, a unique venue for on-board refreshments and functions, and also has an operating licence to undertake corporate and tourist charters in sheltered waters. Charters are based on an hourly rate, for any number of passengers up to 54. Operations are available at any time, subject to availability of volunteer crew.

Tku for an unforgettable afternoon. Todays adventure will stay with us always. Regards Barry & Anne Foley

Barry and Anne Foley

William the Fourth is a beautifully re-created historic paddle steamer that is moored in the Honeysuckle Precinct of Newcastle Harbour with plenty of nearby parking. Whilst on board we explored the harbour opening and the various channels and watched cargo ships, tugs and sailing boats pass by.

Strongly recommend to everyone who wishes to have a better understanding of the City of Newcastle.

Margaret A.

An excellent way to see the sights of Newcastle Harbour aboard this fully restored historically significant paddle wheel steamer, I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone visiting Newcastle.

Christopher B.

Fantastic journey on this historic ship. Whilst the cruise is only approx one and a half hours long, the experience is long lasting. An excellent way of seeing the working port close up

Fabulous cruise on Newcastle harbour and surrounding channels. Wonderful perspective of Newcastle from the water. Crew are great. All ages had a terrific time. A must do experience!

newytraveller53

What a terrific day on board a beautiful ship. The harbour experience was fabulous on board this wonderful vessel. Crew were obliging and extremely knowledgeable. We would have return visit any time.

What a fantastic experience. A wonderful enthusiastic crew, and and huge part of Australian history. Step back in time and understand the old steamers and ships. Truly wonderful day 👌🏽

Happypassengerenjoyingmothersdayrevisited 50

The whole crew were very committed to making sure we had a lovely day as well as keeping us informed of the history of Newcastle as we sailed past each site of interest.

The day turned out to be sunny and the ocean was like a millpond. The crew were very happy and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. They made sure all the Covid rules were abided by.

The High tea was to die for. We had fresh home-made baking at it’s finest. I have had High Tea at Harrods and this was on par. There was even a small card to let everyone know the selections from quiche, scones, Rose cupcake, Lemon Meringue Tart to name but a few.

I would highly recommend that we support this Newcastle venture and bring your friends for a beautiful day out to celebrate a special occasion.

Hours of care and work that goes on behind the scenes obviously pays off. Couldn’t be more proud of the team, my second cruise and still cannot fault a thing xxx

Was a lovely day, weather perfect, crew very informative. Food, packaging and flavours magnificent. Would recommend it to all.

We are a group of five ladies who had a wonderful day on our cruise last Sunday.

Everyone involved was so helpful and went over and above what was required to make the day pretty special.

The kindness to one of our ladies who is suffering from Alzheimer’s was amazing, we are so grateful for this kindness from all the crew on Sunday’s cruise, Thank you.

Nine cruises you can do in a long weekend – direct from UK ports

W ant to try a cruise but not sure it’s for you? It’s a bit of a gamble, after all. What if, after a few days, you decide you’re not keen – but still have to stick out a week or more on-board, and possibly 3,000 miles from home?

It’s a tricky conundrum for prospective cruisers – but the solution may be closer than you think.

Most cruise lines offer “short cruises” which start at just four days duration, though that’s not really viable if you’ve got to fly to the Caribbean or Mediterranean first. Luckily, there is another way – the “taster” cruise. These sailings typically last just two or three nights, and depart from and return to UK ports: perfect for a risk-free sample of life at sea.

It’s not just first-timers who can benefit from these micro-cruises: they’re also an ideal option for seasoned seafarers or city-breakers looking for a weekend escape that comes free of airport delays, lost luggage and budget airlines – and at a reasonable price, too. Many cruise lines even offer a door-to-ship pick-up option, so you don’t have to find a place to park.

These short cruises open up places such as the Channel Islands, Paris and Bruges via their maritime ports of Le Havre, Cherbourg and Zeebrugge. There are plenty of excursions to choose from too, allowing passengers to tailor their cruise beforehand, or explore independently.

So, whether you’re looking for a first-time taste of cruising, a hassle-free minibreak, or a combination of the two, these excellent options offer the perfect way to spend a long weekend without boarding a plane.

Find culture and carats in Antwerp

This cruise lets you explore Antwerp, a vibrant city famous for its diamond industry, and filled with magnificent gastronomy, art and architecture. Take a tranquil cruise along the historic river Scheldt to experience it from all sides, then explore its fascinating medieval heart with its Market Square, café-filled cobbled side streets and Belgium’s largest Gothic cathedral.

The city’s top draws, however, are its vibrant fashion and entertainment scenes, and its fascinating (and occasionally startling) Flemish and French architectural and cultural contrasts. You can even visit the mansion built as a home and studio for renowned painter Pieter Paul Rubens.

Ambassador Cruises (0808 102 8062) offers the three-night Festive Weekend Getaway cruise from £269 per person, on board Ambition, sailing December 8 2023 (round trip from London Tilbury to Antwerp)

Seek continental cool on Guernsey

From the Roman era through the German occupation of the Second World War, Guernsey’s capital, St Peter Port, has been a busy hub. Here you’ll find Georgian and Regency houses mixed with a continental café culture, plus tumbling terraced gardens, winding streets and hidden leafy alleys begging to be discovered.

Take a taxi to explore the Ruettes – tranquil, quiet lanes that are dedicated to walkers, cyclists and riders – and to Castle Cornet, home to several museums and theatrical events. Fort Grey holds a fascinating Shipwreck Museum, while the German Occupation Museum gives a vivid account of island life during this period. Don’t forget, Guernsey is tax free, so leave time for shopping, too.

P&O Cruises (0344 338 8003) offers the three-night Guernsey Getaway cruise from £429 per person, on board Arcadia, sailing June 6 2024 (round trip to St Peter Port, Guernsey from Southampton)

Spend a serene day at sea

While a two-night cruise from Southampton to Newcastle (with one day at sea) might not immediately scream excitement, it does in fact provide the perfect opportunity to experience the delights of “sea days” on a shorter cruise – and comes complete with evening entertainment.

There’s off-ship fun to be found, too: in Southampton itself, explore  ancient town walls and God’s House Tower, a 13th-century gatehouse which leads into the old town and hosts arts and heritage attractions, including fascinating exhibitions. When you reach Newcastle, stride out on foot to see its bridges and bustling quayside, as well as the Baltic Arts centre, which offers a tremendous amount to discover.

Fred Olsen Cruises (0800 677 3995) offers the two-night cruise to Newcastle from £249 per person, on board Balmoral (sailing February 28 2024 from Southampton)

Soak up history in Bruges and Mont St Michel

Of course, a visit to the Unesco World Heritage city of Bruges is not complete without a boat trip on the canals – the arteries of the city – but it is Burg Square that is truly the city’s soul. Take a horse-drawn carriage through the centre, visit the Hanseatic Quarter and revel in the museum of Flemish Art. Next, it’s on to Mont St Michel – also a Unesco World Heritage city. Perched on a pinnacle of rock rising from the sea and accessed by a tidal causeway, its walls encapsulate more than 60 medieval buildings and a 1,000-year-old abbey.

MSC Cruises (020 3909 5432) offers the three-night cruise to Zeebrugge (Bruges) and Cherbourg (Mont St Michel) from £399 per person, on board Virtuosa, sailing May 6 2024 (round trip from Southampton)

Sail beneath starry skies in Scotland

This short break cruise around the sheltered waters of Mull provides stunning views of sea eagles and ancient castles, plus a chance to really appreciate the region’s magnificent coastal scenery. The cruise begins and ends in Oban, taking in Loch Linnhe, Glencoe, the Sound of Mull and Loch Sunart, including a visit to the community at Tobermory with its pretty coloured houses. Come nightfall, the cruise anchors in secluded bays, where you’ll have only the seals and stars for company.

The Majestic Line (01369 707951) offers the three-night A Taste of The Hebrides cruise from £1,360 per person, departing weekly from March to October, on-board Glen Massan (round trip from Oban)

Count the Severn’s Wonders

If you’re keen for a taster of small-ship or river cruising, the 22 passenger Edward Elgar provides an opportunity to do both. This sailing journeys along the Cotswolds escarpment, the upper Severn estuary and Forest of Dean, pausing for guided tours of Berkeley Castle and the Purton Hulks graveyard of 80 barge wrecks scuppered to shore there.

There’s also time to visit the Wildfowl & Wetlands Centre founded by the “father of nature conservation”, Sir Peter Scott, and an excursion to the Cotswolds Canal Trust Heritage Centre, where you’ll discover the history of the local waterways.

English Holiday Cruises (01452 410411) offers the three-night Ship Canal Explorer cruise from £595 per person, on board Edward Elgar, departing March 29 2024, (round trip from Gloucester)

Feast on culture in Zeebrugge and Le Havre

For incredibly fresh seafood and excellent beer (frequently served together), you needn’t look further than Zeebrugge, Belgium’s biggest fishing port. There’s a unique mix of sights and sounds to absorb here, but the nostalgic gem of Admiral Keyes Square is the town’s most enchanting corner, a haven of peace and quiet.

Next it’s on to Le Havre, which lost most of its medieval buildings during the Second World War. Yet from the ashes rose an incredible concrete mix of industrial and natural grandeur – an extraordinary combination, which has since seen it honoured by Unesco.

Cunard (0344 3388641) offers the three-night Bruges and Le Havre Short Break cruise from £689 per person, departing May 30 2024, on-board Queen Mary 2 (round trip from Southampton)

Take the tykes to Belgium

If you’re searching for a great first-time cruise for young children, it makes sense to opt for Disney, with its pools, on-board shows and range of kids’ clubs. Spend time exploring Southampton before you board, with its glimpse into the past at the Tudor House and Garden or the Maritime Museum, then its onward to Zeebrugge. Here, the children’s beach village – with swings, climbing frames and even a life-size play boat – are guaranteed to please, but if you’d like to add a bit of culture, Brussels is a short hop away.

Disney (001 407 566-3457) offers the three-night Belgian Cruise from £1,152 per person, departing August 16 2024, on board Disney Dream (round trip from Southampton)

Choose an adventure in Paris and beyond

See Paris at your own pace (perhaps by narrated mini coach tour, or lunch on a riverboat up the Seine?), or skip the City of Light altogether and head for the D-Day beaches and Bayeux Tapestry on a day-long historical excursion that spans the Middle Ages to the liberation of France at the end of the Second World War. You’ll have two nights here, so there may even be time to squeeze in a visit to the glory of Versailles, too.

Royal Caribbean (0344 493 4005) offers the two-night Paris Cruise from £357 per person, on-board Anthem of the Seas, sailing May 10 2024 (round trip from Southampton)
