Sweden: it’s definitely a country that produces band who know how to write a cracking pop song. And there’s such a variety of bands too, approaching their writing through many different genres. One band that doesn’t over complicate things is Shout Out Louds: they’ve been writing great indie pop songs since 2005’s Howl Howl Gaff Gaff with a casual brilliance that many bands would kill for. Adam Olenius and his band play music that’s a little folk pop, recalling a variety of 60s bands through his simple harmonies but also taking in darker influences – the main one being the music of The Cure. Shout Out Louds don’t rush things (they take their time when recording albums, and their latest Optica is just album number four in over ten years) and their music is often pitched mid-tempo, allowing us to slowly be seduced by Olenius’ song writing. When the band plays live it tends to get slightly more raucous, the passion imbued in these songs spilling over into more loose renditions of familiar songs. The duo of songs to look out for are ‘Very Loud’, which barrels along on a brilliantly unstoppable beat, and The Smiths jangle of ‘Please Please Please’ on which Olenius sounds very much like Robert Smith (another Smith!), pleading irresistibly to the watching crowd. The opportunities to watch Shout Out Louds can be few and far between, but it’s one you shouldn’t miss when the time comes.

Shout Out Louds announce US tour and post-punk comeback
Michaela Harris , A&E Editor | February 18, 2022
Brendan Bourke
Shout Out Louds release their sixth studio album “House” and announce US tour dates.
Five years after the release of its fifth studio album “Ease My Mind,” Swedish pop band Shout Out Louds announced their long-awaited follow up “House,” along with a U.S. tour in May.
For 20 years, the band has experimented with an array of sounds from the peppy, guitar-oriented “Howl Howl Gaff” to the relaxed, string heavy “Optica.” “House” represents a sense of full-fledged maturity for the group.
Frontman Adam Olenius describes this album as “local.” Most of the songs on “House” were written and ready for production just before the height of COVID, which prevented the group from finishing the album that year. “House” represents being tied to a singular space.
“Even though the lyrics were written before the pandemic, I was in this smaller space,” Olenius said. “You create a world where you’re the only hard drive to save stuff to.”
“House” presents an industrial tone that takes inspiration from dance music, minimalism and new wave. The album’s opening track and first single, “As Far Away As Possible,” exemplifies the moody and restless nature that embodies the entire album. The song opens with frenetic, one-note guitars that take a distinct inspiration from bands like New Order.
The opening track follows the emotional tone of the album, but its full-bodied composition is an outlier in terms of sound.
“High As a Kite,” the second single released in 2021, gives listeners a glimpse to the stripped-back setting that makes up a Shout Out Louds live show. The minimal use of instruments and simple production imitates the group’s dynamic in concert. Keeping with the album’s theme, “High As a Kite” is about accepting one’s circumstances and falling back in love with the mundane.
“It’s sort of the opposite of ‘As Far Away As Possible,’ where you’re walking down the exact
same street but now you’re in love with everything,” Olenius said.
Olenius takes a backseat on the bittersweet track “Sky and I (Himlen).” Keyboardist Bebban Stenborg offers lush, lead vocals over cold and dreamy instrumentals. The track follows the theme of isolation and being an outsider looking in at the world.
Shout Out Louds will return to the U.S. in late spring for the first time since 2017. After a Swedish tour through March and April, the group will make their first U.S. appearance in Seattle, Washington, on May 7. On May 10, the group will play at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.
“It feels important to us to travel where we can with our music,” Olenius said. “It’s gonna be in smaller clubs than we’re used to, but it’s gonna be fun. It’ll be like the early days.”
Olenius is excited to re-experience the post-pandemic “band culture.” Venues that were often sold out in Sweden now sometimes struggle to sell enough tickets, but the opposite is true for the states.
“It’s more of a big deal to go out and see a band in Sweden while maybe in the U.S. it’s more ‘go out for a few drinks and see a band.’ We don’t really have that culture over here,” Olenius said.
“House” will be released Feb. 18 on vinyl, CD and digital platforms. Shout Out Louds will host an album listening party livestream on Feb. 19. The stream is available on their website and will be live at noon PST.

“I think every Swedish band has some ABBA in them somewhere,” singer/guitarist Adam Olenius said this week. “They have all those melodies, but there’s something bittersweet in them — I always liked that. If you look at this band, we’re not a depressing bunch. But I’ve always been drawn to the melancholy; I’m sure that came straight to me when I started writing songs and the band got together. I love that line between something sounding sad, and there being some hope– If you listen to the (Beach Boys’) Pet Sounds album, those songs are beautiful but really sad, too. And that comes naturally to me when I start putting words down — I have a problem writing happy songs.”
The band is now on its first US tour since 2017, which wraps up Wednesday May 18 at Brighton Music Hall. They’ll have a new album, “House” to draw from. One interesting thing about the album is that it sounds like explicitly about the pandemic– the first single, “As Far Away as Possible,” voices a familiar shutdown sentiment — yet it was all written and recorded beforehand.
“I was Nostradamus on that one,” Olenius said. “And it’s weird, because the only theme we had for the album was that we wanted it to be very local. When we were rehearsing, we started thinking about the walks we took to the studio, the walks with our kids, going to the bar and living in the little bubble we were in. I usually write about traveling, so this time I tried to focus on the space around me.”
In fact, the album makes the place sound rather inviting — so why the need to get far away? “Maybe I wrote that on a dark Swedish winter day. But it wasn’t so much about me personally, just a mix of friends around me who aren’t happy where they are. You can love the city where you live, but you’ll always know a lot of dreamers.”
Often pegged as an ‘80s inspired band, the Shout Out Louds played into that with the cover art for “House,” styled after a vintage cassette. “Bjorn [their producer Bjorn Yitting, of the group Peter Bjorn & John] actually found his old Sade cassette, so we used that even though it’s a different kind of music. It seemed to suit the album, since we wanted to make it more raw, with every instrument having its own space.” One of the singles, “High as a Kite,” also has a familiar ring, since the guitar intro is notably Cars-like. “I do love that band, but I hadn’t thought of that,” Olenius said. “To me it sounds more like an indie-pop band trying to be AC/DC.”
He said there’s a payoff to keeping the same lineup together for 20 years. “We’re probably faster in our decisions, and more clear about what we want. And after the last two years, we know that we can get through stuff. We’re doing smaller clubs on this tour, but everyone’s excited to be out again. But we were also good friends before the band, so in a way nothing has really changed.”
