Sanctuary of Sameiro

Short history of the Sanctuary of Sameiro in Braga

The construction of the Sanctuary of Sameiro (Santuário do Sameiro in Portuguese) began in 1863 at the request of the vicar of Braga, Father Martinho da Silva.

If the sanctuary originally only consisted of a statue of the Virgin Mary, it rapidly was enlarged during the 19 th century with the construction of a chapel and then the basilica.

Every year, between the 1 st Sunday of June and the last Sunday of August, crowds of pilgrims flock to Sameiro to pay tribute to the Virgin Mary.

In 1982, Pope John Paul II himself visited the Sanctuary of Sameiro. A statue of the pope commemorates this moment.

Visiting the Sanctuary of Sameiro in Braga

The Sanctuary of Sameiro is worth a visit more for the exceptional view it offers over the surroundings Braga than for its architecture.

The silver tabernacle and the statue of the Virgin Mary made in Rome in the 2 nd half of the 19 th century by the sculptor Eugenio Maccagnani are the only features worth mentioning.

Nestled 556 meters / 1825 ft above sea level, the Sanctuary of Sameiro enjoys a breathtaking view of the Minho Valley. In the basilica, a staircase leads to the top of the dome from where the view is particularly spectacular. But the view has to be earned: you’ll have to climb 265 steps before enjoying it!

Sameiro - Braga

📍Getting to the Sanctuary of Sameiro: the sanctuary is located next to Espinho, 4 kilometers / 2.5 miles from the center of Braga and less than 2 kilometers / 1.2 miles from the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus. The easiest way to get to the sanctuary is by car. If you didn’t come to Portugal with your own vehicle, Captain Ulysses strongly recommends that you rent one to freely explore the north of the country and the area around Porto. Find out more here .

⏱ Opening hours : in winter, Monday through Saturday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm and Sunday from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm / in summer, Monday through Saturday from 7:30 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 6:30 am to 7 pm.

💵 Admission: admission is free but you’ll have to pay €2 to access the top of the dome.

📍 Getting to Braga: To get to Braga, there are several options: – the car (if you plan to rent a car in Portugal, Captain Ulysses can only recommend Rentalcars , on which you’ll be able to compare the offers of countless rental companies including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Sixt…) – train or bus (several trips per day from Porto or Guimaraes) – day tours (Captain Ulysses recommends this excursion to Braga and Guimarães from Porto)

🚌 Local transportation: Braga is a small city that is very easy to explore on foot. That said, if you can’t/won’t walk, you can also opt for the hop-on hop-off tourist bus tour .

✈️ Flights and trains: the closest airport to Braga is Porto. To book your flights, Captain Ulysses highly recommends Skyscanner. You’ll be able to compare countless offers to find the best deal. If your dates are flexible, you can also compare prices over several months to find the cheapest flights possible.

  • Churches in Braga

Santuário do Sameiro, Braga, Portugal.

The Santuário do Sameiro is another pilgrimage site close to Bom Jesus do Monte , around 5 km east from the center of Braga .

The huge white-domed church is 1.5 km by road from the bottom of the staircase leading up to Bom Jesus or a 20-minute walk through the pine woods at the top.

Santuário do Sameiro, Braga, Portugal.

Santuário do Sameiro was built in the 19th century and has become an important place of Marian pilgrimage, second only behind Fatima .

Building began in 1863, the inspiration of the local priest Martinho da Silva. However the structure was badly damaged during a storm which caused a fire in 1883 and had to be rebuilt.

The building was finally completed in 1904 and attracted a huge crowd of half a million people to its official opening.

The huge dome was added later in the 1930's and topped with a massive cross in the 1940's.

Pope John Paul II visited in 1982.

Within the church is an image of the Virgin Mary by Italian sculptor Eugénio Maccagnani (1852-1930) and brought to the church from Rome. The crown of the Virgin is done in 2.5 kg of solid gold.

The church is the host for two important annual religious festivals .

These are held on the first Sunday in June and the last Sunday in August. Thousands of people attend these two events. In June the procession begins at Braga Cathedral , whereas in August the procession is from nearby Bom Jesus.

There are superb views on a clear day over Braga and the surrounding countryside.

If you are not arriving by hire car (there is fairly cheap parking at the top) or taxi the easiest way to get to Bom Jesus from Braga is by local Braga bus #2 from Praça Conde de Agrolongo close to the Museu dos Biscainhos or Avenida da Liberdade.

There are buses approximately every 30 minutes (hourly on Sundays). From the last stop at Bom Jesus it is a short walk to the funicular ( ascensor ), which runs from 8 am-8 pm.

From the top of Bom Jesus it is a 20-minute stroll to Santuário do Sameiro.

Alternatively, there are two direct Rede de Transportes Públicos de Braga (TUB) buses to the church, the #88 (weekdays) and the #23 (Sundays and public holidays). The #88 runs on the hour from Braga from 7 am to 8 pm. The #88 bus from Santuário do Sameiro runs at half past the hour from 7.30 am to 8.30 pm. The #23 runs on the hour from Braga from 7 am to 8 pm. The #23 bus from Santuário do Sameiro runs at 25 minutes past the hour from 7.25 am to 8.25 pm.

If you are not a believer, you will soon become one ! Sameiro Sanctuary near Braga  is amazing and stunning. It is the witness of Christian fervor of Portuguese people who put their talent, creativity, generosity and courage in building exceptional religious monuments.

You will be impressed by the very  pure and simple church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, thought to facilitate meditation and prayer. A relic of Pope John Paul II, now sanctified, is being exhibited in the church.

If you feel hungry and realize that you are in the middle of nowhere, do not panic, there is always something to eat and drink within easy reach in Portugal. On the Sameiro site, you will find "Sameiro Maia", a small restaurant that welcomes travelers and pilgrims from around the world. Huge public toilets are available (if their number and size amazes you, remember that Sameiro welcomed Pope John Paul II in 1982 and thousands of pilgrims from around the world).

How to Get a Portuguese NIF Number: Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to the most comprehensive guide on obtaining your Portuguese NIF number. Whether you’re an EU/EEA resident or from outside the EU/EEA, this guide provides step-by-step instructions, insider tips, and practical advice for getting that all-important NIF number.

What is a NIF Number? The Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) is a unique nine-digit number essential for a range of transactions in Portugal such as buying or renting property.

What does NIF stand for? NIF stands for Número de Identificação Fiscal , which translates to Tax Identification Number. It is also known as the Número de Contribuinte .

Is a NIF number always nine digits long? Yes, a NIF number is always nine digits long.

Does my NIF number expire? Your NIF number does not expire and does not need to be renewed either.

Will having a NIF help me get residency? Although having a NIF number is increasingly becoming a requirement for many residency visas, having one won’t necessarily improve your chances if you don’t meet the main visa requirements (e.g., having a sufficient passive income in the case of the D7).

Why You Need a NIF

You will need a NIF number for:

  • Opening a bank account.
  • Getting a phone contract.
  • Buying or renting property.
  • Applying for a residency visa (such as the D7, golden visa, or digital nomad visa).
  • Signing up for utilities.
  • Applying for a job.
  • Applying for other numbers, like the Portuguese healthcare number ( número de utente ).

Getting Your NIF: A Step-by-Step Guide

This section breaks down the process for getting a NIF depending on where you’re resident (i.e. living). Note: the word resident as opposed to a citizen .

For Non-EU/EEA Residents

Most non-EU/EEA residents use the online route rather than the in-person route. This is because non-EU/EEA residents need a fiscal representative .

Online via Service Providers

  • There are multiple companies that offer this service. Prices range from €68-€300, depending on the company and package chosen.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your passport and proof of address.
  • The process usually takes around 2-7 days, depending on the service you’ve chosen. Your NIF will be emailed to you.

In Person at a Finanças Office

  • Use Google Maps to find the nearest Finanças or Loja de Cidadão Office office. Offices in smaller towns typically have shorter lines.
  • Call +351 217 206 707 to book an appointment, or arrive early as a walk-in.
  • You need a fiscal representative who is a resident of Portugal. This can be a friend, family member, or a lawyer.
  • Proof of address
  • Fiscal representative’s ID and proof of address
  • Arrive early to avoid long waits. Bring all required documents and your fiscal representative.
  • Present your documents at the counter. You’ll receive your NIF on the spot. There will be a small fee of €10.20, however, if you’ve used a lawyer as a fiscal representative, there will likely be additional costs.

Do non-EU residents need to use a lawyer as their fiscal representative? All non-EU residents need a fiscal representative to apply for a NIF on their behalf. Your fiscal representative does not necessarily need to be a lawyer, but they do need to be a Portuguese tax resident.

For EU/EEA Residents

Given that EU/EEA residents don’t need a NIF before moving to Portugal, most use the in-person route as it’s free. However, you can use a company if you want to avoid the hassle of queuing or aren’t physically in Portugal.

  • Use Google Maps to find the nearest Finanças or Loja de Cidadão office. In major cities like Lisbon or Porto, the queues will be long and you could consider visiting an office in a smaller town or arriving early.
  • Appointments aren’t always necessary but can save time. Call +351 217 206 707 to book, or arrive early to secure a spot as a walk-in.
  • Passport or EU ID card.
  • Proof of address (bank statement, utility bill, or driver’s license).
  • Arrive early, preferably 30-45 minutes before opening in places like Lisbon, to avoid long waits. Reports suggest quieter times at Finanças offices, such as after lunch. Bring your documents and get a ticket from the kiosk (look for “ NIF ” or “ Número de Contribuinte ”).
  • Present your documents at the counter. You’ll receive your NIF on the spot. There should be no charge for this.
  • There are now a large number of companies that can help you obtain a NIF, not to mention immigration lawyers and relocation companies.
  • The process varies depending on the company and speed of service, but most take less than 7 days. Some offer speedy services that take less than 1 day. Your NIF will be emailed to you.

Do I need a Portuguese address to get a NIF? No, you do not need a Portuguese address to request a NIF. However, once you move to Portugal, you should update your address via the tax office’s website, Portal das Finanças .

Are there tax implications for obtaining a NIF? Obtaining a NIF does not automatically subject you to Portuguese taxes. However, if you register a Portuguese address, you may be considered a tax resident.

Can I get a NIF if I don’t speak Portuguese? Most (but not all) Finanças staff speak basic English. If you are concerned about communicating, ,ost online service providers offer support in multiple languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Russian (depending on the company).

How much does it cost to get a NIF? For EU/EEA residents, getting a NIF in person is free. Those that use an online company (which will be most non-EU/EEA residents) should expect to pay anywhere from €68-€300, depending on the company they use. Non-EU/EEA residents can get a NIF in-person for €10.20, however, this requires you to be in Portugal and have a fiscal representative.

Can I get my NIF via email? During the COVID-19 pandemic, some people successfully received their NIF numbers by sending an email to Finanças offices. However, this option may no longer be available.

How do I change the address of my NIF once I become a resident in Portugal? Once you become a resident in Portugal, you can easily request for your change of address on the tax office’s website, Portal das Finanças .

When should I change the address on my NIF? Should I do it as soon as I arrive? You should change the address on your NIF to your Portuguese address as soon as you have proof of address in Portugal.

Do I need to change my NIF to a Portuguese address before I can rent an apartment? You should be able to use your NIF with a foreign address to rent an apartment.

Will using a NIF help reduce my Portuguese tax obligations? When you request an invoice/receipt with your NIF for purchases, you can deduct expenses on your personal income tax (known as IRS in Portugal).

What prizes are currently available for using the NIF? For the Fatura da Sorte (Lucky Invoice) draw, they award Treasury Certificates of 35,000 euros in weekly contests.

Will I have to fill out annual paperwork or a tax return once I have a NIF, even if it’s just a non-resident one? Generally, non-residents only need to file a tax return for income received in Portugal. We recommend speaking to an accountant to get advice on your personal situation.

I’ve accidentally used someone else’s NIF number but want to correct this so I get the benefits. What can I do? The vendor should be able to cancel the old receipt and issue a new one. If the vendor is not willing to do it, the most that you can do is file a formal complaint in the livro de reclamações (complaints book).

Can a married couple share the same NIF, like sharing one bank account? Each individual needs their own NIF number. As a married couple, you can share a joint bank account, but you will still need your own NIF numbers to open it.

I’m a freelancer with a client in Portugal. Do I need to include a non-resident NIF when invoicing my client in Portugal? As a non-Portuguese freelancer, you do not need a NIF in order to invoice a client in Portugal.

I was born in Portugal but no longer live there. Would I have been given a NIF at birth or at what age do Portuguese citizens obtain their NIF? NIFs are not mandatorily assigned at birth. Parents typically get a NIF for their children when they start school since this is necessary for enrolment.

Fiscal Representation

Do non-EU residents need to use a lawyer as their fiscal representative? Non-EU residents need a fiscal representative to apply for a NIF on their behalf. This does not necessarily need to be a lawyer, but they must be a Portuguese tax resident.

I’m leaving Portugal forever and moving to a non-EU country. Can I cancel my NIF? The Portuguese tax office does not allow for the cancellation of your NIF even if you no longer live in Portugal. However, you no longer need ongoing fiscal representation unless you have ‘ties’ to Portugal e.g. you own a property or car here.

I’ve left Portugal and moved to another EU country, but I wasn’t able to update my new address because I didn’t know it. Can I change that now? You should update your address to avoid being considered a tax resident in Portugal. If you don’t, you might be liable for personal income tax in Portugal. You can update your address at Portal das Finanças .

Someone has asked me to be their fiscal representative. What are the legal and financial ramifications of this? As a fiscal representative, you are obligated to receive any letters from the Portuguese Tax Authority and forward them to the NIF holder. Failure to forward these communications or prove that you have done so could result in fines.

Using Your NIF

Receipt with NIF Number

Is it a legal requirement to use a NIF when making a purchase? You are required to provide your NIF when making large purchases like a car or a house because these come with annual tax obligations. In the supermarket, giving your NIF is optional because this simply allows you to have tax deductions on your personal income.

Why am I asked for my NIF in the supermarket sometimes but not other times? It pretty much depends on the person checking you out at the supermarket. If you’d like to use your NIF, simply ask the cashier for your NIF to be included on the receipt.

Can I use a NIF with a foreign address for residential things like getting internet, paying for utilities, etc.? Yes, there is no address requirement when using your NIF for such services.

Is it still a legal requirement that I carry my NIF on me? No, you do not need to carry your NIF document with you at all times. For day-to-day things, like at the supermarket, you can simply provide your NIF verbally. For official transactions, you may need to bring the official document, which serves as your proof of NIF. As a Portuguese resident, it would be really helpful to memorise your NIF (in Portuguese) since it’s used so often.

How can I get my NIF printed on a card? The Portuguese Tax Authority no longer issues NIF cards, but you can get a file that you can print out yourself on the e-fatura website. The 2-page PDF issued by Finanças would be the best document to use as proof of your NIF.

I’ve forgotten my NIF number. What should I do? If you are in Portugal, you can go to a Finanças office to request a copy of your NIF. If you are abroad, please get in touch with the Portuguese embassy or consulate nearest you.

A website is asking me for a NIF, but I don’t have one. What should I do? If you’re not a Portuguese resident, it can be confusing when Portuguese websites (such as supermarkets) ask for your NIF. Some people put their passport number or a personal tax identification number from their own country. If that doesn’t work, try putting nine zeros e.g. 000000000.

Will my children need a NIF? At what age does someone need a NIF? There isn’t a hard requirement on age, but your child will need a NIF in order to enroll in school.

Getting your Portuguese NIF number doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With this ultimate guide, you’ve learned the importance of a NIF, how to obtain it, and how to use it effectively. With your NIF in hand, you’ll now be well on your way to enjoying everything Portugal has to offer.

The only thing to be wary of is to not eat for 2 days before you visit. HUge portions of perfectly cooked steak. Have been before and have never had a reason to fault this place at all.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

sameiro travel nif

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

sameiro travel nif

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

sameiro travel nif

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

sameiro travel nif

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

sameiro travel nif

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
