Licensure Requirements

To be a travel nurse in Alaska, you must apply for an Alaska nursing license by endorsement. 

All RNs and LPNs seeking to apply for a license endorsement must currently hold a license in another state or Canadian province. Licenses must be current at the time of application with no holds. 

To apply for an RN or LPN license in the state of Alaska you must: 

• 1. Submit a signed and notarized registered nurse license by endorsement application, which can either be printed and mailed or completed online .
• 2. Fill out and submit an authorization for release of records form.
• 3. Submit fingerprinting and background reports.
• 4. Have a verification of the licensure sent directly (available which can be provided through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing online verification system at Nursys Ⓡ ) from the state you initially received your license and the state or Canadian province you currently hold your license in.
• 5. Submit and complete a Verification of Employment form verifying at least 320 hours of nursing employment within 5 years of submitting your application. 

Once the following requirements have been received and processed, a temporary permit will be automatically issued so you can begin practicing nursing within the state while your endorsement is pending review.  

Temporary permits are valid for 6 months and nonrenewable.

Licensure Fees

The following licensure fees must be paid to the state of Alaska: 

• Nonrefundable Application Fee: $100.00
• License Fee: $200.00
• Fingerprint Processing Fee: $ 75.00
• Total Fees Due: $375.00

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Alaska is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) . However, the state is currently pending NLC legislation.

Is Alaska a Walk-Through State?

Alaska is not a walk-through state.

Every two years, nurses must complete at least two of the following CEU requirements to renew their Alaska nursing license:

• 320 hours of documented nursing employment
• 30 hours in professional nursing activities or volunteer work.
• 30 contact ho urs including 15 contact hours of education in advanced pharmacology and clinical management of drug therapy.

Acceptable CE courses must follow the accreditation standards established or followed by one of the organizations listed below:

• American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
• American Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
• Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)
• A nurse practitioner certifying body (i.e., AANP)
• A nurse anesthetist certifying body

Applicants should earn at least 20 contact hours through one of the accredited establishments mentioned above. No more than 10 educational contact hours may be earned through in-service nursing offered by a licensed healthcare facility.

With each contract may come a new health insurance policy . This will be dependent on the agency that you work with. If you switch between multiple agencies then there will most likely be a lapse in your health insurance. However, nurses can opt for private insurance and pay out-of-pocket. That way, when the assignment ends, you won’t lose your insurance.

1. California

In 2022, it’s no surprise that California is still the highest paying state for travel nurses. One reason? Mandatory overtime pay. After 8 hours of work, you get time and a half, according to state laws per Workforce Hub.

Additionally, California has one of the highest demands for travel nurses, which means you’ll have plenty of specialized nursing opportunities as a traveler. It’s a huge state, with several of the highest ranking medical centers, such as Cedars-Sinai, UCLA, Stanford, and UCSF.

California isn’t a compact state, so prepare to wait a few months for your California nursing license. It can cost around $400. 

With $53-$85/hour as the average wage for travel nurses in CA–it’s worth the wait.

Not only is there the potential for a higher salary, but there is also the excitement of visiting new places. Most nurses considering traveling look for the highest-paying states for travel nurses. After years of contemplation, I took a travel assignment in California because I needed to make money quickly while in graduate school and was relocating out west that year. Alaska Airlines flight attendants will now get paid for helping you board the plane

F light attendants for Alaska Airlines are getting a big pay bump. The union representing them, the Association of Flight Attendants, just revealed the details of a tentative agreement struck with the company in June after nearly two years of negotiations. Its members will get an at least an immediate 18% raise plus retroactive pay, though the average bump will be 32%, in a big win, so-called “boarding pay.”

“We are pleased to present a groundbreaking Tentative Agreement (TA) for your consideration,” the union said in a statement . “It took 20 months of hard bargaining, but our dedication paid off. AFA Alaska is the first carrier to secure boarding pay in a legally binding contract. With boarding pay, we achieve significant pay increases that position us at the top of the industry at all steps.”

Boarding pay has been a big fight for flight attendants because they are typically are not paid for the time they spend helping passengers get on the plane. The AFA says that the provision in the tentative agreement will increase its members’ compensation by an average of 8% per flight. The union also won retroactive pay for raises missed while negotiations were ongoing, a major sticking point in the ongoing talks at American Airlines .

Alaska has been publicly conciliatory regarding its various union negotiations: “Labor rates have gone through the roof, taking several margin points away from when we were producing those margins,” CEO Ben Minicucci said at an investor conference in March regarding the company’s higher COVID-19 personnel costs, “but that’s just the way the world changes.” Still, flight attendants in February approved a strike nearly unanimously in the event that talks broke down.

“We’re pleased to reach a deal with AFA and look forward to our flight attendants working under a new contract as soon as possible,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement to Quartz.

A tentative agreement is not the same as a contract. Union members still need to vote on whether to ratify it, and those votes won’t be wrapped up until the end of the month.

Alaska Airlines flight attendants win tentative agreement to boost pay, avert strike

Alaska Airlines flight attendants say they’ve reached a tentative agreement with the airline for a new contract that would boost pay 32% and compensate flight attendants for boarding time before the plane takes off.

The three-year contract, if ratified by the Association of Flight Attendants’ Alaska members, would  avert strikes authorized in February . The union said the agreement is the result of 20 months of negotiations.

It would be the first U.S. airline union contact to include pay for flight attendants while passengers are boarding the plane, the union said. Historically airlines have paid cabin crew members only after the cabin door is closed. Delta Air Lines, whose flight attendants are not unionized, began paying for boarding time in 2022.

The union said boarding pay alone would amount to an 8% raise on average.

The agreement also includes 21 months of retroactive pay, covering the time spent negotiating.

Voting on the contract begins later this month and ends Aug. 14.

Alaska Airlines confirmed the tentative agreement with the association of Flight Attendants.

“We’re grateful to our colleagues at AFA who bargained with determination and dedication to our flight attendants,” the company said in a statement. “With our combined efforts, we’ve been able to reach an agreement that provides quality of life and continued career growth at Alaska.”

The union, meanwhile, noted that  Alaska’s proposal to buy Hawaiian Airlines  for $19 billion could mean new rounds of contract talks.

“With the Hawaiian Airlines merger on the horizon, we anticipate being back at the bargaining table very soon for joint contract negotiations,” the union said in introducing its tentative agreement to members. “This will give us yet another opportunity to fight for more improvements.”

Flight attendants at United and American are still locked in negotiations over new contracts with those airlines. Southwest Airlines flight attendants ratified a new contract in April.
