What people love about switzerland tours from zurich.

Had an amazing time in Switzerland and met new wonderful friends. Trafalgar did a great job. Everything was organized and safety was top priority. Will travel with Trafalgar again.
The planning was great and easy to follow. We had great time. I do hope I could get the itinerary earlier so we can make additinal plan at each stop early on. And it would be great to have more transparency on the pricing also.
We booked a Globus tour to Switzerland via Tour Radar. The overall process was surprisingly easy. They provided many options for tours (with descriptions and reviews) so we were able to choose the one that was right for us. Tour Radar guided us through everything we needed to do via email and their website messaging. We will use Tour Radar again.

Welcome to Switzerland

Alpine adventures abound in one of the world's favorite year-round playgrounds. There is nothing better than climbing through the Alps by cogwheel train to the Jungfraujoch or the Matterhorn at "the top of Europe" as the view takes your breath away. Savor cultural delights from velvety chocolate to the gastronomic celebration of gooey cheese ready for dipping... enjoy the urban edge and charming architectural styles of Bern, and other treasured cities with unexpected nods to unique, modern aesthetics.

Visit one of the world's top-ranked cities in which to live... zurich, switzerland.

Switzerland's largest city, Zurich today is a global leader and a world capital of banking (not to mention of chocolate), and consistently ranks high among the world's cities in quality of life. But this modern metropolis on Lake Zurich has a long, rich history that stretches back some 2,000 years, and you'll enjoy experiencing some of it with Tauck – including Bahnhofstrasse, the exclusive shopping boulevard connecting Lake Zurich with the main railway station… Old Town, with its Niederdorf pedestrian area, whose winding streets are lined with shops, artisan studios, and restaurants… and a plethora of interesting architecture, fountains, squares, and churches like the Romanesque Grossmünster.

Join the "beautiful people" at the chic Alpine resort town of St. Moritz

Lovely vistas of sparkling lakes and majestic peaks greet you in the high alpine resort town St. Moritz in Switzerland's Engadine Valley. Set on the southern slopes of the Albula Alps, the town has been a popular winter sports destination for well over a century. St. Moritz has played host to the Winter Olympic Games twice – in 1928 and 1948 – and the world championships of alpine skiing in 1934, 1974, 2003 and 2017. Besides skiing, other winter sports including snowboarding, tobagganing and bobsledding are popular in St. Moritz, home to the world's last remaining natural bobsled run (built up with only snow and water, without artificial means), which opened in 1904. The resort, which enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine every year, ranks among the most famous – and glamorous – ski resort areas in the world, where celebrity spotting is almost as popular as the skiing.

Tauck Exclusive – Reception at the Jungfraujoch Ice Palace

Enjoy cocktails and more at the "top of europe" with an exclusive private reception at the jungfraujoch's ice palace.

As your mountain railway train ascends into the majestic Swiss Alps, you'll arrive at Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger, then board a cogwheel train for the scenic climb to Europe's highest railway station, at the Jungfraujoch (perched at 11,333 feet above sea level). Here, at "the top of Europe," you'll find a restaurant, observatory, research station, a gallery of ice sculpture, and breathtaking views of the glacier-clad Bernese Alps, often called Switzerland's "jewel in the crown." And you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive... a private cocktail reception at the Ice Palace… taking time. of course, to savor the astounding views of the lofty peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch surrounding you!

Bellevue Palace Bern

More than a century of history in the shadow of the alps.

The only grand hotel in the heart of Switzerland's capital, Bellevue Palace Bern a national institution – the official guest house of the Swiss government for over 150 years, in fact. Whether you arrive for a romantic weekend, an eventful holiday or an official visit, the hotel's stylish and discreetly luxurious rooms and suites leave nothing to be desired. All offer classically elegant furnishings combined with modern-day comforts, harmonious colors and stunning views. Thanks to our hospitality, you are sure to feel at home.

Rhine Falls, Schaffhausen

Experience the largest waterfall in europe – the rhine falls, near schaffhausen in northern switzerland.

Located near the town of Schaffhausen on the Rhine River in northern Switzerland, the Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) is the largest plain waterfall in Europe, Set on the "High Rhine," the falls are 150 meters (490 feet) wide and 23 meters (75 feet) high. They were formed during the last ice age – approximately 14,000 to 17,000 years ago – by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed. Travelers, artists and authors have been awed by the Rhine Falls for centuries; in the 19th century, J. M. W. Turner created several paintings of the falls, while "Frankenstein" author Mary Shelley wrote glowingly of it in her "Rambles" in the 1840s. With Tauck, you'll experience the Rhine Falls on a boat excursion from nearby Schaffhausen – with time to explore this historic town with its fine Renaissance-era buildings decorated with exterior frescoes and sculpture, and its circular 16th-century hilltop fortress, the Munot, in the center of town.

Swiss Alps

Discover Jungfraujoch: The Crown Jewel of the Swiss Alps

Nestled at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 feet), Jungfraujoch stands as a testament to nature’s grandeur, earning its moniker as the “Top of Europe.” As the highlight of our guided day trip from Zurich, this alpine wonderland beckons with a panorama of snow-capped peaks, pristine glaciers, and dramatic mountain landscapes.

Jungfraujoch

Sphinx Observatory: A Gateway to the Sky

Ascend to the Sphinx Observatory, perched on the Jungfraujoch summit. Here, at the highest-altitude observatory in Europe, you’ll be captivated by 360-degree views that stretch across the Swiss Plateau to the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest. Engage with the fascinating exhibits and witness the magic of the cosmos from this unparalleled vantage point.

A Panoramic Overture from Zurich to Jungfraujoch: Unveiling Nature’s Opulence

Embark on a sensory odyssey that transcends geographical boundaries as we traverse from the vibrant cityscape of Zurich to the majestic heights of Jungfraujoch. This is more than a mere voyage; it’s a grand overture where every bend in the tracks and every panoramic vista unfolds as a note in a symphony composed by nature herself.

The journey begins with the rhythmic hum of the train, a melodic prelude to the visual feast awaiting passengers. Rolling hills, emerald meadows, and charming villages set the stage for the crescendo of the Swiss Alps, where snow-capped peaks emerge as towering musicians in this alpine orchestra. The scenery, a kaleidoscope of colors and textures, transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, creating a visual opulence that is uniquely Swiss.

As the train ascends through the sinuous tracks of the Jungfrau Railway, it’s not merely a means of transportation; it’s a dance with elevation, a waltz through the very veins of the mountains. The higher the ascent, the more profound the connection with the surrounding peaks, and the anticipation builds like the rising notes in a symphonic movement.

Arriving at the summit, Jungfraujoch unfolds as nature’s grand amphitheater. The air is thin, crisp, and laden with the purity that only mountain altitudes can offer. A vast panorama stretches before you, a tableau of glaciers, jagged peaks, and an endless sky that beckons you to explore the boundaries of earthly grandeur.

The Sphinx Observatory, perched at the pinnacle, becomes the maestro’s podium, offering unobstructed views of the alpine spectacle. Here, the symphony of the skies plays out in the daylight, as you stand amidst celestial wonders, humbled by the vastness of the cosmos and the beauty of our planet.

Descending into the heart of the glacier, the Ice Palace is a subterranean sonnet—a crystalline ode to the glacial forces that have shaped this landscape over millennia. Stalactites hang like chandeliers, and the intricate ice sculptures narrate a story written in frozen water. It’s an artistic expression of nature’s creative prowess, a harmonious interplay of light and ice.

Find more things to do!

A symphony of scenic wonders:.

The journey from Zurich to Jungfraujoch is a visual masterpiece, a symphony of rolling hills, emerald meadows, and charming villages that paves the way for the grandeur of the Swiss Alps. As you ascend through the Jungfrau Railway, each twist and turn in the tracks unveils a new movement in this orchestration of nature.

Jungfraujoch: The Apex of Alpine Beauty:

Arriving at Jungfraujoch, you stand at the apex of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by a panorama of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and a vast expanse that seems to touch the heavens. It’s a spectacle that goes beyond sightseeing – it’s an encounter with the sublime, an immersion into the very heart of alpine beauty.

Swiss Alps

Jungfraujoch: More than a Destination, a Journey into Alpine Splendor

Beyond its staggering altitude, Jungfraujoch is a sanctuary of tranquility and natural beauty. It’s a destination that transcends the ordinary, inviting you to explore, contemplate, and connect with the essence of the Swiss Alps. Join us on this guided day trip, where every moment at Jungfraujoch becomes a chapter in your personal alpine odyssey.

If you’re planning to do a lot of day trips by train, I would definitely get the Swiss Pass which will allow you to ride the trains for free and also give you free access or deep discounts on a lot of activities around Switzerland.

When it comes to getting around Switzerland , the train system reigns supreme, offering both convenience and efficiency. And while driving provides autonomy, the train ensures relaxation and panoramic views. For day trips from Zurich, the train journey only amplifies your experience!

Full-Day Trips from Zurich

The best day trips from Zurich by train are anywhere from an hour to 3 hours one way. Below, you can read about the most popular day trip destinations, as well as some unassuming gems!

3.5 hours by car

I only recommend taking this day trip from Zurich if you have a rental car, otherwise it will take too long by train. Zermatt and the Matterhorn are must-sees when you’re in Switzerland, so even if you don’t take a day trip, it’s worth spending the night if you need to.

europe tours from zurich

Zermatt is most famous for its incredible views of the Matterhorn, but there’s a lot more to this picturesque town. It’s home to some of the most scenic train rides on Earth and some great restaurants and shopping as well.

Zermatt is also the end of the  Walker’s Haute Route , which is a massive hike through the Swiss Alps that begins in Chamonix, France, and traverses some of the most beautiful scenery in Switzerland, ending in Zermatt. You can take the Gornergrat Railway (one of the most scenic train rides in the world), Hike from Gornegrat to Riffelsee, and visit the Matterhorn museum.

30-45 minutes by train

From Zurich’s main train station, you can take a leisurely train ride along Lake Zurich to Rapperswil at the southern end. Spend a day exploring the medieval castle and its rose gardens which are the reason the city has been called the “City of Roses.”

europe tours from zurich

Rapperswil has been called the “Riviera of the Alps,” with its lakefront attractions, historical charm, and top-notch shopping and dining options. Old Town is home to a wide range of designer boutiques, clothing retailers, gift shops, cafes, restaurants, and trendy food joints.

Take a walk along the lakeside promenade. And if you’re feeling up to it, visit the local Knie’s Kinderzoo, which features animals native to Switzerland.

Whether you’re an art lover or looking for a relaxing jaunt outdoors, consider visiting the Enea Tree Museum nearby. This park is home to a wide range of regional trees, as well as fascinating contemporary art sculptures by renowned artists.

1 Hour by Train

A Zurich to Lucerne day trip is one of the most popular day trips available to travelers in Switzerland. In just an hour, you’ll arrive in the heart of Lucerne, where you’ll have access to the town’s many treasures! Walk the cobblestone streets of Old Town to see beautiful examples of medieval architecture. You can visit the Richard Wagner Museum, housed in a charming villa.

Nearby, you can ascend Mount Pilatus via cable car ride for views that take your breath away.

A day trip to Bern is a great way to experience the diversity of the Swiss countryside in central Switzerland. In just an hour, you’ll travel from urban Zurich to this idyllic Swiss town. The entire town holds the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a storybook-perfect Old Town.

Switzerland-Itinerary-Bern-1536x1024

One of the best things to do in Bern is simply to roam the streets! Say hello to the famous Zytglogge Clock Tower, shop, and hunt down historic bronze statues and pretty fountains. This is also where you’ll find Switerland’s tallest cathedral, the Cathedral of Bern!

When in Bern, a visit to Bear Park is a must. Plus, you can visit the Einsteinhaus, a house museum where the mathematician lived while he was developing his Theory of Relativity. And among the many excellent museums in Bern, I recommend the Natural History Museum.

In just an hour, you can reach Basel, a cultural hotspot on the banks of the Rhine River. Nestled on the banks of the Rhine River, Basel is a vibrant Swiss city that offers historical, cultural, and outdoor attractions.

europe tours from zurich

Basel is known for its thriving arts scene. The city boasts over 40 museums, including art museums like Fondation Beyeler, the Museum Tinguely, and the Swiss Architecture Museum. For more variety, there’s the Toy Worlds Museum or the Jewish Museum of Switzerland.

The old town is a gorgeous maze of medieval streets and squares, anchored by the magnificent Basel Minster with its striking red sandstone façade. Make sure to check out Marketplatz. Framed by imposing medieval buildings covered in ornate architecture, the square hosts a vibrant farmer’s market and festive holiday gatherings.

And just a short walk away, the Rhine promenade invites you to take a scenic walk. During the warmer months, locals and visitors alike love to swim in the river’s cool waters. And a relaxing Rhine River cruise is a fantastic idea on a sunny day!

Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Schaffhausen just might be the most popular day trip from Zurich! This is where you can experience Rhine Falls, Europe’s largest waterfall, as well as the magic of an ancient Swiss town.

Neuhausen am Rheinfall is the home of Rhine Falls. This is the perfect spot to witness the sheer power of the cascades from an observation deck. Or you can take trails along the river’s edge that take you through lush forests and close to the falls.

europe tours from zurich

For a thrilling experience, take a boat to get close to the falls. It’s the ultimate way to feel the spray and energy of the cascades! For more daring activities, there’s also Adventure Park Rheinfall, where you can take on challenging ropes courses and ziplines right next to Rhine Falls!

You can also discover the source of Rhine Falls by venturing to Lake Constance, which feeds Rhine Falls nearby. This serene lake straddles 3 countries and offers boat rides that provide mesmerizing views of the surrounding landscapes.

Then, in Schaffhausen, walk into the past as you explore well-preserved medieval streets. Don’t miss the impressive Munot fortress, which offers panoramic views of the city and the Rhine River. And a popular stop in Schaffhausen is the All-Saints Museum (Museum zu Allerheiligen), which boasts a treasure trove of art and artifacts.

1-1.5 Hours by Train

Venturing from Zurich, the towns of Arth Goldau and Einsiedeln offer a taste of Swiss beauty and spirituality in a single day trip!

Start your day in Arth-Goldau, set on the banks of beautiful Lake Zug and cradled by the Swiss Alps. You can spend your time riding bicycles along the stunning lakefront or exploring quaint local eateries by the water.

europe tours from zurich

And nearby Mount Rigi is one of the most sought-after destinations in all of Switzerland. Take a cogwheel train to the top and enjoy hiking trails that offer breathtaking scenery.

Then just it’s another 30-minute train ride to Einsiedeln known to be a spiritual haven. The crown jewel here is the majestic Einsiedeln Abbey. Marvel at the baroque architecture and explore the rich history within. Plus, if you’re here in the winter, the village hosts a charming Christmas village in the square here!

1.5 Hours by Train

Stein am Rhein stands as a time capsule, offering a captivating journey back to the Middle Ages. It’s hailed as one of the best day trips from Zurich for those interested in medieval history. This charming town is like something out of a fairy tale!

europe tours from zurich

The town’s well-preserved half-timbered houses are breathtaking and give you a sense of reverence for the past. Every corner of Stein am Rhein tells a story, inviting you to explore its historic nooks and crannies. The vivid frescoes that decorate the buildings just add to the town’s charm!

The church and former monastery of St. George’s Abbey is a main attraction in Stein am Rhein. Its intricate facade and ornate details paint a living picture of centuries past, so you feel like you’re walking in history. Nearby, you can explore Hohenklingen Castle, and take a stroll along the picturesque Rhine River.

Taylor Swift Thanks Amsterdam for '3 Magical Nights' of Eras Tour Shows: 'Sang Your Hearts Out'

Swift's stint in the Netherlands was full of love as her boyfriend Travis Kelce attended two of the shows

Taylor Swift is bidding Amsterdam farewell!

The "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" singer, 34, posted her farewell message to fans in the Netherlands' capital city on Instagram on Sunday, July 7, after wrapping up three Eras Tour shows at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

"Three magical nights in Amsterdam!! Thank you to everyone who came to those shows, sang your hearts out, and danced all night with us!" she captioned a carousel of photos taken at her shows from July 4 to July 6.

She ended the sentimental caption with a nod to the next city on the Eras Tour: "See you 🔜 Zurich!"

Swift's tenure in Amsterdam was full of love. Her boyfriend Travis Kelce was at two of the performances — and she performed one of her most sentimental ballads — 2006's "Mary's Song " — for the first time in 16 years with Kelce, 34, in attendance.

It was part of a mashup of her song "So High School," which has lyrics about the Super Bowl champion, and the Red ballad "Everything Has Changed" about new love.

Fans cheered extra loudly as she ended the mashup with the "Mary's Song" lyrics: "I'll by 87, you'll be 89 / I'll still look at you like the stars that shine / In the sky, oh my my my."

The words have a new meaning since her relationship with the NFL star began. Both Swift and Kelce were born in 1989 and his jersey number is 87. The performance appeared to make the Chiefs tight end emotional.

Patrick, Brittany Mahomes join Travis Kelce for Taylor Swift Eras Tour

Josh sanchez | 13 hours ago.

europe tours from zurich

Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany continued their European tour before the Kanas City Chiefs star quarterback begins training camp to prepare for the upcoming season.

After taking in the sights and sounds of Wimbledon, the couple jetted off to Amsterdam to reunite with some familiar friends.

The Mahomes' liked up with Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce and made the trip to the Johan Cruyff Arena Saturday night to take in the latest stop of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.

Brittany documented their travels on social media.

Eagle-eyed concertgoers spotted the Mahomes' with Kelce in a box enjoying the show.

They drew enough attention while they were singing along with Swift's biggest hits that an entire section of the crowd was more focused on them than the show on the stage.

That's power.

It's the first time we have seen the Mahomes' at an Eras Tour stop, but the Amsterdam show fit in perfectly with their recent travels. The couple has been traveling across Europe with their two children, and previously made stops in Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and London.

It likely marks the end of an eventful offseason for Mahomes and Kelce, who recently wrapped up their second straight Super Bowl championship.

There is no word on whether Brittany will extend her European stay for extra time with her newfound bestie.

Training camp for the Chiefs kicks off on July 20, but Kelce is also scheduled for the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament from July 10 to 14, so he'll have to jet back to the states soon.

Swift, meanwhile, continues her tour with stops in Zurich and Milan, before traveling to Germany in the middle of July.

Could this ‘dull’ Swiss city become Europe’s queer capital?

Decadent nights out, outdoor swimming and street parties: anyone looking for an astounding lgbt+ scene on their next city break should add this destination to their travel plans, says rachael davis, article bookmarked.

W hat is the recipe for a good LGBT+-friendly city break in the summer? The ingredients surely include a thriving club scene, seasonal cocktails and a welcoming community. Bake that together with a city that seamlessly blends impressive nature and metropolitan amenities and you’ve got yourself a weekend away in Zurich – the city that should be on every queer traveller’s list.

“Whatever you want from Zurich, you can find it,” I’m told by a local while enjoying a free livestream of Bizet’s opera, Carmen , on a lake-front square in the Swiss city. “It’s all right there.”

The sweeping statement is accompanied by an equally sweeping gesture, a hand waving seemingly at the entire city. But what is this man referring to with this all-encompassing motion? After a few days in Zurich, that one smooth gesture seems to round up everything from wild swimming and boat trips to a pulsing dance scene and riverfront cocktails that all come together to make for an LGBT+ holiday destination that often gets overlooked – if considered at all.

Streets are filled during summer parades and parties

While more commonly touted queer hubs like Berlin, Amsterdam or Brighton might get more attention as LGBT+ friendly destinations. Zurich has a deep queer culture. It was the birthplace of Der Kreis (The Circle), an underground network and social club for gay men in the 1940s when homosexuality was still criminalised.

And today, the riverfront Niederdorf quarter is home to dozens of queer bars along the Limmat river. Start your time at Cranberry Bar, home to charming staff and inventive cocktails behind a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ front door on Metzgergasse, while cafe-bar GLEIS will see you through day to night with an impressive array of spritzes designed to be enjoyed in a Swiss summer.

What truly makes Zurich special, however, is the unusual blend of natural beauty and a thriving cultural city centre. It’s impossible to resist the gravitational pull of Lake Zurich. The blue water beckons when glimpsed down narrow streets and the crystal-clear depths are the ideal way to while away a few hours on a sunny summer’s day. There are around 40 outdoor pools – known as badis – scattered throughout the city between May and October.

Cooling off in the Limmat

Luckily, that’s not the only – or even the most common – way to enjoy Lake Zurich. The vast array of parks and swimming areas pull in many young people, preferring to take their dips in the clear, sparkling water outside of the badis . You can take a dip anywhere in the lake – although it’s advisable to make sure you’re doing it somewhere where there’s an easy way to get in and out.

Stone and grassy slopes offer wonderful spots to sunbathe afterwards, with kiosks and cafes nearby from which to grab a bite to eat or refreshing beer to pair with the sunshine. The view from the lake looks directly onto the Swiss Alps in a landscape that you’re pushed to find elsewhere in Europe . The combination of a bustling city centre, a tranquil lake, and a mountain view is certainly a rare one – and not something to miss.

If you prefer to enjoy the lake from the surface rather than the water, there’s an easy, not to mention cost-effective, way of doing so. The Zurich Card , priced at CHF 29 (£25.60) for 24 hours, includes all public transport – including boats. It might seem like a steep sum for transport alone, but you can also use the Zurich Card to hop on a 90-minute cruise around the lake, with tables and chairs for prime views of the water and surrounding woods.

Don’t miss August’s vibrant Street Parade

When the sun starts to go down and you’re looking for somewhere to continue the fun, Zurich’s dance culture has various open doors to welcome you. Nightlife here is understated yet rewarding. The best advice is to search out specific nights: Plaza’s Glitter Gwitter on Saturdays, for example, or the revolving door of local and international techno/electro DJs heading to Kauz .

The festival scene is alive and well on Lake Zurich, too, with the world’s biggest electronic music event taking to the streets of Zurich every year in August . The Street Parade in 2024 falls on 10 August, a strong contender if you’re wondering when to time your trip to Zurich. The convoy of trucks blasting music, stretching over two kilometres, starts at Utoquai in Zurich’s Seefeld district before rolling along the Zurich lakefront to end at Hafendamm Enge. Pick a truck that’s pumping out music and follow it along until midnight.

And don’t miss Flash Party at Volkshaus Zurich, the queer afterparty that’s held every year. While the Street Parade itself is free, tickets for Flash Party start from CHF 30 (£26.50) and are worth buying in advance.

All in all, Zurich offers a quieter, more intimate experience, thanks to its dense city centre that opens up onto a stunning natural backdrop. You can spend a summer lounging by the lake by day and enjoying a hive of bars and nightlife at night. Its lesser-known status allows for a more authentic city break , uncovering a destination away from the usual throngs of tourists.

How to do it

Zurich can be reached via direct flights from major UK cities – including London , Manchester, Edinburgh , Bristol, and Birmingham – with various airlines, including easyJet , Ryanair and Swiss International Air Lines . Flight time is around two hours.
