Sky Princess

Debuted in October 2019, Sky Princess can accommodate 3,660 passengers and 1,346 crew members. With so much space, you'll find plenty of things to do on board. Spend your days playing ball at the sports court or swimming in one of three pools, or shop until you drop at the onboard boutiques. Nightfall brings deck parties, movie screenings under the stars and live performances at the theater by musicians, comedians and magicians. Kids won't be bored, either, as there are clubs designed specifically for three different age groups.

Sky Princess features traditional Interior, Oceanview and Balcony staterooms, as well as a number of Suite-category cabins – some of which are equipped with the largest balconies at sea. Every room comes fitted with a queen-sized bed or two twin beds, a refrigerator, a flat-screen TV and complimentary 24-hour room service.  The biggest accommodation on board are the Sky Suites. They are approximately 1,873 square feet and provide guests with 270-degree panorama views while cruising. The suite also comes with additional amenities such as complimentary balcony breakfast and dinner, luxury balcony furniture and a deluxe telescope for stargazing at night.

When it's time to chow down, cruisers will have their choice of nine inclusive dining venues and five specialty options. In the main dining room, passengers can choose between a set dinner time every evening or the line's Anytime Dining option, which will allow them to dine whenever – and with whomever – they want. You'll also find a complimentary buffet, a pizzeria, a seafood bar, a gelateria and afternoon tea. For a specialty dining experience, consider the intimate Chef's Table Lumiere or Bistro Sur La Mer by Emmanuel Renaut, a three-starred Michelin chef.

Sky Princess sails throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and the Mediterranean. The ship also completes some transatlantic sailings.

Princess Cruises is a premium travel brand and a subsidiary company of Carnival Group, making it one of the 10 cruise shipping lines and travel brands owned by currently the world's biggest cruise shipowner - Carnival Corporation . As part of the conglomerate, the Princess brand brings ~20% of the Group's revenue.

Company History and Changes

Princess Cruises ( was founded in 1965 by Stanley McDonald who chartered the Alaskan ship SS Princess Patricia (1948-built/1995- scrapped , IMO 5284924) for roundtrips to the Mexican Riviera from Los Angeles during the off-season (winter). In 1967, Princess started to charter the ship MS Italia (1967-built/2012- scrapped , IMO 6513994), which had a modern design, numerous innovations, more spacious upper decks, larger public areas (midship/ by placing the engines aft).

In December 2025, the company celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Princess Cruises logo - CruiseMapper

The new "Princess Italia" again operated the Mexican Riviera from LA (the Princess logo on the funnel was placed for the first time in 1967). In 1969 the ship made its inaugural season in Alaska with roundtrips from San Francisco . When the charter ended (in 1973), Princess chartered the "Carla C" ship (from Costa Cruises ) and unofficially renamed it "Princess Carla".

The company's modern-times history commenced in 1974 when it was acquired by P&O UK. The new owner transferred its "Spirit of London" ship (renamed Sun Princess) and 3 more boats bought from "Flagship Cruises" for the Princess brand - "Sea Venture" (Island Princess), Island Venture (Pacific Princess) and MS Kungsholm (Sea Princess). The first newbuild (specifically for Princess) was Royal Princess (1984, also served Princess under the name "Artemis").

A major company asset is "Princess Tours" (Alaska division acquired in 1986) with 10 luxury railcars for scenic tours of Mt McKinley and daily capacity 700+ passengers. With the acquisition of Sitmar Line (1988), P&O added to the Princess brand 3 more vessels (then under construction) - in 1989 (Star Princess/2021-scrapped as Columbus) and in 1990 (Crown Princess, Regal Princess), plus 2 former Cunard liners (renamed Dawn Princess, Fair Princess) and Sitmar's "Fairsky" ship (renamed Sky Princess).

The "P&O Princess Cruises" company was established in 2000 (October 23rd). It subsequently merged with Carnival Corp in 2003 (April 17th) into "Carnival Corporation & plc". The USD 5,4-billion-dollar merger created the largest cruise shipping company in the world ever , grouping 11 different travel brands as subsidiaries.

Princess Cruises Royal-Class ship

Currently, Princess Cruise Lines Ltd (USA) is transferred to Carnival's American division (Holland America Group), but the brand's marketing and sales in the UK are under Carnival plc (aka Carnival UK) which also manages Cunard Line.

The company's current President is John Padgett (assigned in October 2021) who reports directly to Holland America Group's President (Jan Swartz). John Padgett was employed by Carnival Corporation (2014-2021, as Chief Experience and Innovation Officer) and by Walt Disney Parks & Resorts (1996-2014).

The company's other top executives include Terry Thornton (CCO/Chief Commercial Officer), Jim Berra (CMO/Chief Marketing Officer), Carmen Roig (VP of Sales), Vicki Johnson (Senior VP of Communications).

The world's most romantic attention the Princess cruise brand received by the participation of its vessels (first Island and Pacific, later Royal, Sun, and Sea) in the onboard filmed TV-series "The Love Boat" (ABC-aired from 1977 until 1986).

  • In May 2018, the cast of "The Love Boat" (ABC TV series run 1977-1986) and Princess Cruises was presented a Hollywood Walk of Fame star plaque. The honorary plaque is located in front of Dolby Theater's main entrance on Hollywood Blvd.
  • Following the pilot show (May 5, 1977), the cruise ship-themed series continued for 10 seasons (until May 24, 1986).
  • The Princess brand became famous and commonly known as "the Love Boat cruise line". In the series were used the Princess-owned ships Island Princess (2017-scrapped as "Discovery"), Royal Princess (now Artania ) and Sea Princess (2016-scrapped as "Veronica") cruising to exotic destinations around the world.

One of the most famous features of Carnival's Princess brand is its "Personal Choice Cruising" program - an unstructured and individualized approach to the ship vacation travel by the innovative "if you want it - when you want it" concept. The brand's travel style provides an exceptional feeling of choice and flexibility giving passengers the opportunity to customize their vacation in a way that most fits their personal interests and desires. Implemented in the mid-90s (on the Sun-class Princess ships), this unique concept of passengers being in control of their voyages and vacation experiences was realized via multiple shipboard dining venues, flexible entertainment options and affordable balcony staterooms.

On March 23, 2023, Princess announced the partnership with Luigi Lavazza SpA (1895-founded, Turin Italy-based manufacturer of coffee products) as the brand’s "Official Coffee Partner". By the deal, Lavazza products and services are offered fleetwide and include coffee-themed dinners, Lavazza-based recipes, educational sessions, coffee tastings/samplings and food pairings.

On June 24, 2023, were announced new onboard "Princess Perfect Weddings" packages and the appointment Randy Fenoli (1964-born American TV host and fashion/bridal designer best known for his TV show "Randy to the Rescue and Say Yes to the Dress") as Princess Cruises' Love and Romance Ambassador. Also was announced that he will host a bridal fashion-themed voyage on Regal Princess (leaving from Galveston TX on Dec 3rd) with signature events like meet & greets and wedding gown consultations. As brand ambassador, Fenoli developed the exclusive "Randy Fenoli Weddings" package.

In October 2023, the company announced a shift in its pricing strategy, ensuring that only early bookings get the best-priced deals possible (by eliminating last-minute cruise booking discounts) and also introduced the Best Price Guarantee and Princess Promotions.

(NEW) Ship boarding/embarkation system (2023)

On August 1, 2023, Princess Cruises implemented fleetwide a new boarding process aiming to make it easier for tourists to board the ships. As a result, the scheduled arrival times on embarkation day were eliminated.

The new embarkation system requires all passengers to complete the necessary steps (via Princess App) prior to the voyage.

  • Green Lane qualified are passengers who have completed all the Travel Checklist's steps and have received their Medallion device by mail (only in the USA and Puerto Rico). Green Lane provides the most streamlined embarkation/fastest boarding. Note: Passengers who are Green Lane-eligible but choose not to have their Medallions shipped to them are classified as Blue Lane.
  • Blue Lane qualified are passengers who have completed (some, none or all) Travel Checklist's steps but have opted not to have their Medallions mailed to them. Blue Lane guests still enjoy an expedited check-in but must pick up their Medallion at the cruise terminal.
  • Accessibility Lane is for passengers experiencing mobility/accessibility difficulties. They have a separate/dedicated lane for faster check-in, regardless of their color designation.

The new embarkation system no longer requires selecting a specific arrival group time. Instead, guests can arrive within the designated check-in window at a time that suits them. However, Princess Cruises strongly recommends all guests to provide travel arrangement information via OceanReady (MedallionClass app and the Cruise Personalizer). The check-in details can be found in their travel summary.

Since August 2023, the company also improved the Digital Boarding Pass which is available in the Princess app (11 days prior to the ship departure date). The updated boarding pass now includes the deck and stateroom number.

Princess Upgrade (new cabin upgrades program)

In August 2022 was announced the "Princess Upgrade" program that allows passenger cabin upgrades on a regular basis (not as promos) and for all types of staterooms and categories.

The new program was officially launched on September 6, 2022, on just 5x USA-based Princess boats (Caribbean, Discovery, Enchanted, Regal, Ruby). By the end of October (2022) the program was rolled out fleetwide.

"Princess Upgrade" is only for bookings within Final Payment and when the full payment has been made. Then customers receive an invitation to submit a bid on any cabin type and category that is above the currently booked. The bid can be changed or canceled at any time before being accepted.

Shipboard retail shopping

In September 2021, Princess and Harding signed a deal for the entire fleet's onboard retail shopping business to move under Harding’s management.

Harding+ (Bristol UK-based global travel and cruise retail group) in 2020 was acquired by Davidson Kempner Capital Management LP (1983-founded, NYC-based investment management firm with USD 34+ billion in managed assets). Harding has hubs in Bristol (England) , Miami (Florida USA) and Sydney (NSW Australia) .

The existing Princess retail team joined Harding's as part of the transition.

Each of the Princess boats has an onboard shopping arcade named "Shops of Princess".

In April 2016, Princess' owner Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding order for 2 new boats scheduled for deliveries in 2019 ( Sky Princess ) and 2020-2021 ( Enchanted Princess ). Sky and Enchanted are 4th and 5th ROYAL-class ships (same-designed as Royal, Regal , Majestic ) all constructed at Monfalcone yard as part of a previous agreement with Fincantieri (shipbuilder). At that time, Carnival Group had a total of 16 shipbuilding orders , with scheduled deliveries between 2016-2020. These 3670-passenger vessels have 80% balconied staterooms and some fleet-first features.

Princess Cruises Royal-Class ship

In late-January 2017, Carnival Corporation announced 2 more orders for the fleets of Princess (Royal-class) and Holland America Line (Pinnacle-class). Carnival signed an MoA (memorandum of agreement) with Fincantieri to construct both units, with deliveries in 2021 ( Nieuw Ryndam-Rotterdam for HAL, at Marghera yard) and 2022 ( Discovery Princess , at Monfalcone yard). When both contracts were finalized (February 2017), Carnival Corporation had a total of 19 newbuilds scheduled for deliveries in 2017-2022.

In July 2018 were ordered 2 new-class (larger than Royal-class) liners with GT tonnage/volume 175000 and passenger capacity 4300. These are the fleet's first dual-fuel (MGO and LNG) powered vessels. The contract with Fincantieri (Monfalcone) was signed in March 2019, with scheduled deliveries in 2023 and 2025. Princess in 2018 had 5 newbuilds on order with Fincantieri. The 2023-2025 units were Carnival Group's 10th and 11th LNG-powered ships .

By 2019, during drydock refurbishments (part of the company's USD 450 million fleet renovation program), 45000+ "Princess Luxury Beds" were rolled out fleetwide (to 22000+ staterooms / on all liners). The custom-made "Princess Luxury Bed" implements the latest sleep science technologies and was developed via partnership with Dr. Michael Breus (The Sleep Doctor) and Candice Olson (Canadian designer).

In December 2019, Princess signed with Panasonic Corporation a deal to deliver 4K laser projectors for the entire fleet (first unit was installed on Sky Princess). All liners will be outfitted with Panasonic PT-RQ50KU (4K Laser Projector with Solid Shine technology) to be used for the new 5-Skies production show featuring UHD imagery.

In September 2022 Princess signed with Xponential Fitness Inc (Irvine CA USA-based, 2017-founded company) a 5-year exclusive licensing agreement. Xponential Fitness is currently the world's largest global franchise group of boutique fitness brands. As of 2022, Xponential franchises 10 fitness brands (Club Pilates, pure barre, CycleBar, StretchLAB, Row House, YogaSix, Rumble, AKT Dance, STRIDE Fitness, BFT) and has 2220+ gym studios in 48 American states and 13 countries. The deal with Xponential, together with the partnership with OneSpaWorld (providing gym professionals and wellness staff and services) made Princess the first major cruise company to offer multiple premium fitness brands for personalized and customizable gym/training experiences. During the agreement period (2022-2027), at least 8x Xponential brands are available on each Princess boat (120 licensed gym studios fleetwide).

In 2024 ( Sun Princess ) and 2025 ( Star Princess ) debut the fleet's ever-largest (SPHERE-class) vessels, with GT-tonnage/volume ~175,000 tonnes.

Princess Cruises Sphere-Class ship

Each boat has 21 floors, 2157 staterooms, and the signature (fleet-first ) facilities The Dome (top-deck entertainment space covered by a glass roof) and Piazza Atrium (3-deck-high, outward-looking midship suspended space with comfortable seating, 360-degree outside views, huge LED screen/movable, to allow live entertainment). Both SPHERE Princess ships also have new for the fleet cabin types - Signature Collection Suites (exclusive access to Signature Restaurant-Lounge & Bar-Sundeck) and Reserve Collection Staterooms (exclusive restaurant).

Princess ships with MedallionNet WiFi Internet

In early-September 2018 was introduced (on Caribbean Princess) Carnival Corporation's OceanMedallion technology - wearable devices allowing passengers access to "virtual concierge" services and amenities, as well as interactive entertainment. The new technology also includes the MedallionNet - (SES Networks-powered) Wi-Fi connectivity via access points installed in all staterooms. In 2021 was introduced "Ocean Sportsbook" (a real-time sports betting option available fleetwide/on all boats) which allows betting on sports like football, basketball, baseball, hockey, cycling, car racing, boxing, martial arts and other competitions.

When the cruise ship is in international waters, passengers can use the MedallionClass app to wager on sports and place bets during live events that occur during the voyage and also place bets on future sports events - that occur after the voyage. With USD 20+ billion in wagers placed with USA's sportsbooks in 2019-2020, online sports betting is expanding and expected to reach USD 155+ billion by 2024.

Ocean Sportsbook is via partnership with Miomni Gaming Ltd (1998-founded software developer) and available on all vessels since 2021. Ocean Sportsbook is part Ocean Casino's digital platform that lets wagers be placed beyond the ship's Casino Lounge (indoor-outdoor venues, sundecks/pool decks, wellness complex, staterooms, etc) on games including slots, poker, blackjack, roulette, bingo, lottery, keno.

In June 2021 the cruise company introduced the industry's first CrewCall. The on-demand service is via the cabin's smart HDTV (and the MedallionClass app) and allows passengers to call a crew (to their current onboard location) for assistance or to request services. The app's "CrewCall Chat" allows texting (via smart devices) a specific question or making requests to the crew member.

Cruisetours / Shore Excursions

Since 2017, Princess Cruises offers "Shore Excursions Best Price Guarantee" for tours in all ports of call. The program was launched fleetwide in Dec 2016 and guarantees if passengers booking through Princess find the same tour/excursion elsewhere at a lower price, they will receive 110% of the difference as non-refundable OBC (onboard credit). In such cases, an email request must be submitted at least 7 days prior to departure (at [email protected]) to be reviewed by the company's Shore Excursion team. Within 2 business days, booked passengers are notified if their request meets the criteria.

  • "Best Price Guarantee" applies only to tours/shore excursions that are publicly available (priced online).
  • "Best Price Guarantee" applies to all excursions, excepting those in Asia and also excepting private vehicle/driver excursions in all ports.
  • Princess Shore Excursions program offers over 4,000 land tours/excursions in 360 destinations and over 150 itineraries.
  • "Discovery" and "Animal Planet" themed excursions are also available as part of the new "Discovery at Sea" cruise tour program (via an exclusive partnership with Discovery Communications). These tours are unique, can't be booked independently and are available only through Princess. The program includes over 1,000 such tours worldwide.

The company's most popular/purchased cruise package is "Princess Plus" (cost US$50 per person/per day). The package is inclusive of premium beverages, unlimited WiFi Internet (for 4x devices), selected specialty restaurant dining, digital photos (+ 3x printed/8x10 cm), Princess Prizes, daily crew gratuities.

Princess Alaskan lodges (cruisetour packages)

Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is a 663-room complex located approx 2 km (1 ml) from Denali Park's entrance. The building has an expansive deck overlooking Nenana River and views into the nature park. Accommodations are available exclusively to Princess Cruises customers, offered as optional pre-/post- Alaskan cruise tour packages.

In 2019 (company's 50th year in Alaska), Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge debuted the 180-seat restaurant "Fannie Q's Saloon". The new dining venue serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, offering locally inspired, authentic dishes (Braised Pork Shoulder, Bison Sliders, Bear-Lard Pie). The modern saloon has indoor and outdoor seating, with live entertainment in the evenings. Outside Fannie Q's Saloon is the Fireside Patio with 3 new BBQ firepits and selling refreshment drinks. Grizzly Burger (formerly Grizzly Bar and Grill) now offers the company's signature "Ernesto" - exclusive ribeye burger created by Ernesto Uchimura (Japanese celebrity chef).

Like outdoor activities, Princess cruise tour passengers can meet mountain climbers (who have conquered Mt Denali) in the Mt McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge (Denali State Park). Outside the lodge, there is a retired airplane.

  • Fishing and sledge dog puppies activities are both complimentary. Lodge's Denali show costs USD 20 per person.
  • Playing with sledge dog puppies on a cruise ship is probably the last thing one would ever imagine doing. However, it is one of the new activities available on all Princess Cruises Alaska itineraries. The company's "North to Alaska" enrichment program debuted in 2017 and gives passengers the chance to take photos and interact with baby sledge dogs in the ship's Atrium (lobby) area. Dog handlers are on hand to talk about this Alaskan sport.
  • The "Puppies in the Piazza" experience is available on all Princess Alaskan cruise ships and roundtrip itineraries. Also new is the chance to taste your own catch of the day for dinner. New fishing excursions allow passengers to select their preferred preparation by ship's culinary team.

During the company's 2018 Alaskan program was inaugurated the custom-designed wilderness treehouse built at Mt McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. The treehouse allows guests to view Mt Denali while enjoying themed activities.

The treehouse was built during Discovery Channel's Animal Planet episode "Treehouse Masters", which premiered in August 2017. It was the first-ever treehouse in Alaska, being designed and built by Pete Nelson. Powered by solar panels, the facility provides Princess cruise ship tourists with a unique "Alaskan land tour" experience. Sized approx 500 ft2 (46 m2), the treehouse can be accessed by hiking the "hill trail loop".

Princess Cruises bear mascot Stanley

Since summer 2017, Princess Cruises ships feature a most special onboard attraction - the company's mascot bear Stanley.

Princess Cruises mascot Stanley Bear

The sensationally cute bear mascot was named in a Facebook contest with over 9,000 entries, Mascot's name honors Stanley McDonald (1920-2014). In 1965 he founded Princess Cruises and expanded it into one of the world's largest cruise ship companies. In 1975, he sold Princess to P&O Cruises (back then named "Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company") and remained its Chairman until 1980.

As the bear fell in love with ship cruising, he decided to skip winter hibernation and became a stowaway. So since 2017 Stanley travels around the world on all Princess ships. Stanley also made "surprise" appearances on the company's "Chinese ship" Majestic Princess in July 2017 during the inaugural festivities in Shanghai China . From China, Stanley the Bear embarked on all Princess itineraries.

During the day, Princess' "cruise ship bear" wears themed apparel, which is tied to the ship's current itinerary destination. On Alaskan cruises that would be his lumberjack outfit. In China, he wears a traditional Tang suit and cap. In Japan, he wears a Yukata outfit. On formal nights, the bear dresses up in the Captain's uniform. The Stanley bear appears on all Princess ships. He interacts with passengers through various entertainment activities with engaging photo opportunities. Stanley also holds storytime hours for kids at the ship's youth facilities.

On the ship, passengers can participate in the daily contest "Where on the ship is Stanley". The mascot is also present on the special Welcome Aboard shows throughout the voyage. Souvenir Stanley bears plush toys are available for purchase in the onboard shopping arcade "Shops of Princess". The toy's price is USD 25. A portion of the proceeds from the toy's sales goes to "Princess Animal Welfare Sponsor".

Princess cruise ship passengers can share their travel adventures with Stanley using the social hashtag #StanleyAtSea.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess Cruises ship

Gene Sloan

Call it the big-ship cruise line for the country-counting crowd.

Among the world's five biggest cruise brands , all of which operate big, mass-market vessels, Princess Cruises offers the most diverse array of itineraries (more than 170 in a typical year) with stops in more than 100 countries and on all seven continents.

Despite having just 15 vessels , the California-based line's ships visit more than 330 different ports and destinations in a typical year and bring travelers to a whopping 100-plus UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, the line's heaviest presence by far is in Europe, Alaska, and Australia. In a typical summer, Princess Cruises will deploy at least four or five of its 15 vessels to Europe while sending another five or six to Alaska (these numbers were higher just a couple of years ago, before the line downsized significantly during the pandemic). That leaves just a few vessels for other destinations such as the Caribbean, New England and Japan.

During a typical winter, Princess will move around half a dozen of these ships to the Caribbean but also send several to Australia. It will also operate sailings in South America and along the Mexican Riviera.

Among the line's voyages, you'll find everything from three-day sampler cruises along the West Coast of the U.S. to 111-day around-the-world voyages.

In North America, Princess ships generally sail out of Fort Lauderdale; New York City; Quebec City; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Whittier, Alaska.

With so many options, what are the best Princess cruise destinations you can visit? Here are TPG's top five.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises

princess cruises in usa

Some of Princess's most popular itineraries are in Europe, where the line traditionally has been a significant player. It has deployed as many as eight vessels to the continent from spring to fall in recent years, making Europe one of its biggest focuses for more than half the year.

The itineraries that Princess offers in Europe are wide-ranging, with a diverse set of routings in both the Mediterranean as well as across Northern Europe.

In the Mediterranean, the line offers everything from seven- to 24-night voyages that offer the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona, Spain; Rome, Florence and Venice, Italy; the island of Santorini in Greece; and Kotor, Montenegro, in a single cruise.

Some Princess cruises in the Mediterranean also include visits to Istanbul and Kusadasi in Turkey (the latter a gateway to the famed ruins of Ephesus), and Haifa and Ashdod in Israel (for visits to Jerusalem and other iconic destinations in the country).

In Northern Europe, Princess will take you to such well-known Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki; and St. Petersburg, Russia, in a single sailing. (Note that Princess has removed St. Petersburg from Baltic cruises for 2022 due to the war in Ukraine.) There also are itineraries that will bring you to Iceland, Greenland and the Norwegian fjords.

Among the longest itineraries Princess offers in Europe is a 28-day "Baltic and Icelandic Fjords Medley" trip out of Southampton, England, that combines it all with stops in Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Norway and Iceland. Note that whether the next departure of this itinerary, scheduled for June 28, 2023, includes St. Petersburg will likely depend on how the war with Ukraine evolves. The stop currently remains on the schedule.

Related: The 3 classes of Princess ships, explained

In Northern Europe, Princess ships mostly sail out of Southampton, England, and Copenhagen, Denmark.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy and Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece.

Caribbean and The Bahamas

princess cruises in usa

You usually won't find a single Princess ship in the Caribbean and the Bahamas over the summer, when the line turns its focus to sailings in Europe and Alaska. But come winter, it'll reposition quite a few of its vessels to the Caribbean and Bahamas sailings, making these warm-weather Princess cruise destinations a top choice.

For the coming winter, for instance, it currently has six of its 15 vessels scheduled to sail in the regions — including two of its newest and biggest ships, the 3,660-passenger Sky Princess and 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess.

Princess offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from two main home ports — Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and New York City.

If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of quick, four- and five-night trips to the Bahamas or Mexico. But it's best known for longer sailings. These include lots of seven-night itineraries to the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean but also a large number of even longer, 10- to 14-night Caribbean voyages.

The latter trips offer the chance to see a broader mix of Caribbean islands than is typical on Caribbean sailings.

Related: Everything to know about Princess cabins and suites

A 14-day "Circle Caribbean" itinerary out of Port Everglades, for instance, brings calls at the islands of St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Martinique, St. Vincent, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada and Aruba.

Princess also offers a 14-day "Caribbean Islander" itinerary out of New York City that brings calls at San Juan, Puerto Rico; the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin (known as St. Maarten); St. Kitts; St. Lucia; Bonaire; Curacao; and Aruba.

princess cruises in usa

Perhaps the best destination you can visit on a Princess ship is Alaska . That's because Princess is particularly known for cruises to the 49th state, where it dominates the market for cruises along with sister line Holland America. In recent years, Princess has deployed as many as seven or eight ships to Alaska in the summer — far more than most other lines. Even after its recent downsizing, Princess is likely to continue to send at least five or six ships to the region each summer.

Princess also operates its own wilderness lodges in Alaska, as well as tourist trains and buses. It uses the lodges, trains and buses to offer an extensive range of 10- to 17-night Alaska "cruisetours" that combine a cruise with land-based touring.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to September. For 2022, Princess has deployed six ships to the Alaska market:

  • Discovery Princess: Princess's newest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier for glacier viewing.
  • Grand Princess: The 2,600-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park and either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord for glacier viewing.
  • Majestic Princess: Like Grand Princess, the 3,560-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park and either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord for glacier viewing.
  • Crown Princess: Like Discovery Princess, the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park.
  • Ruby Princess: The 3,080-passenger vessel will operate 10-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of San Francisco. It'll offer two different itineraries that stop in differing Alaska port towns. One of the routings includes a stop at Glacier Bay National Park.
  • Royal Princess: Like Grand Princess, the 3,560-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park and either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord for glacier viewing.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Grand Princess, Majestic Princess and Royal Princess is that they can be combined with the stays in Princess's lodges mentioned above to create the longer Alaska "cruisetours" that combine a one-way cruise with a land tour.

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

princess cruises in usa

Princess has been sending multiple ships to Australia every winter for many years, offering a wide range of itineraries out of Sydney, Brisbane, Fremantle (the port for Perth), Adelaide and Melbourne that make calls not just around Australia but also in New Zealand.

The itineraries in the region that the line offers vary in length from just two nights to 28 nights. But the shorter voyages primarily are aimed at a local Australian crowd looking for a quick getaway. Among North Americans, the most popular itineraries are the longer ones, which often are heavily skewed to stops in New Zealand.

Related: Guide to the Princess Captain's Club loyalty program

Among several New Zealand itineraries that Princess offers regularly are 13-night voyages from Sydney that feature calls at Bay of Islands, Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch and Picton as well as scenic cruising at New Zealand's Fiordland National Park.

A 17-night New Zealand itinerary out of Adelaide brings calls at Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, Wellington and Dunedin, as well as scenic cruising at New Zealand's Fiordland National Park. In addition, it includes stops in Melbourne, Australia.

Princess also offers full circumnavigations of Australia. The 28-night trips typically include visits to Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, the Kimberley Coast (for scenic cruising), Broome, Fremantle, Busselton, Albany, Adelaide, Melbourne, Burnie and Hobart as well as a non-Australia stop at Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea.

For 2022, Princess plans to have just three of its vessels in the Australia and New Zealand region at least part of the year — an abnormally low number that is the result of the slow restart to cruising in the region in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The line currently plans to send four and six vessels to the region in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

princess cruises in usa

In 2013, Princess became the first major international cruise brand to offer an extended season of voyages around Japan, and it remains a leader in Japan-focused cruises. If you're thinking about cruising to the island nation, Princess should top the list of lines to consider.

Princess typically sends one or two ships to Japan every year for an extended season that often lasts from March to November. It offers a wide mix of itineraries around the country ranging in length from five to 19 nights.

The longer trips on the schedule deliver vacationers to such iconic Japanese destinations as Nagasaki and temple-filled Kyoto (via the port of Osaka) as well as such lesser-known ports as Tokushima and Miyako. The itineraries typically include at least one stop in South Korea or Taiwan, and they sometimes include a visit to a Russian port such as Vladivostok.

Princess typically deploys its 2,670-passenger Diamond Princess to Japan — an 18-year-old ship that has a distinctly Japanese flavor, thanks to a massive makeover in 2014. The makeover brought the addition of an extensive traditional Japanese bath area — a first for a cruise ship — as well as a sushi restaurant. Menus in Diamond Princess's main restaurants and buffet feature Japanese items such as miso soup and noodles alongside Western fare.

Diamond Princess originally was updated with Japanese-style design and amenities specifically to lure Japanese vacationers to its Japan sailings. But the around-Japan voyages have proven popular with Americans and Australians, too. You'll usually find a mix of Japanese, American and Australian travelers on the line's longer Japan sailings.

Bottom line

Princess cruises to destinations around the world, and offers a wide range of itineraries from the Caribbean to Asia. You'll find the most choices among Princess itineraries in Europe, Alaska and Australia. The line also is well-known for voyages to Japan. Its special focus on Japan sailings, with a ship retrofitted with Japanese design, in particular, is something that sets it apart from other big lines.

I went on a magic-themed cruise. Here are 3 things you need to know.

princess cruises in usa

On the first night of my cruise earlier this month, I chatted with fellow passengers as we watched the sunset from one of the ship’s highest decks.

At one point, a woman asked if I had something on my shirt. She reached to pluck something from my sleeve, but where I expected to see lint, she held a $50 bill – which came as a surprise since I wasn’t carrying cash.

“Can I keep that?” she asked. Considering the woman, who was a magician, seemed to pull the money from thin air, it only seemed fair.

For me, the trick marked the unofficial start of Princess Cruises’ inaugural Magic Castle Conjurer’s Cruise. The line partnered with the Magic Castle , a legendary private club in Los Angeles, to bring the magical arts to the high seas on its Discovery Princess ship. Here are three things that stood out while sailing on a themed cruise:

1. The cruise showcased a wide range of magic

For the uninitiated, a magic-themed cruise may bring card tricks or robes and wands a la “Harry Potter” to mind. And while the weeklong sailing along the coast of California and Mexico featured both of those, magicians performed a wide range of illusions on board.

Danny Cole began his set with several on-stage costume changes during the cruise’s welcome show, seemingly switching suits and shirts in the blink of an eye.

Later, his wife, Stacey Suarez Cole, helped him put an oscillating electric fan from the 1950s together. But when they were done, the box it came in – resting on a nearby dolly – closed itself back up. During her solo performance, she appeared to bring a motionless butterfly in a glass case to life in a puff of smoke.

Erika Larsen, president of Magic Castle Enterprises, said she curated the lineup with variety in mind.

“There's a lot of magic happening, sometimes two shows a day, of first-rate magicians and they're all doing different kinds of magic in different styles,” said Larsen, whose parents and uncle founded the Magic Castle.

Other performances throughout the sailing incorporated comedy, original music, coin tricks and even pickpocketing (for the show, of course).

2. The cruise made the Magic Castle accessible

The Magic Castle has a storied history as a hub for admirers of the magical arts, located in an early 1900s mansion in Hollywood. But getting in is a trick on its own: visitors need to be invited or accompanied by a member.

The Conjurer’s Cruise, however, opened the doors to a wider audience. Ronak Patel, an investment manager who lives near Dallas, had wanted to go to the Magic Castle for at least a decade, and his wife booked the cruise as a gift for his 40th birthday.

“I would say at least for the last 10, maybe 12 years, I've been trying to figure out who's a magician that is based out of the California area that I can reach out (to),” he said.

Patel, whose uncle got him into magic growing up, said the trip was “more than I could ask for.”

“It's exciting for us to take the essence of the Castle and bring it to guests who may never get to Hollywood or, even if they do reside in Southern California, to have that as a first taste or entry into what is within the Castle walls,” said Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president, Entertainment Experience.

Princess will double down on that next year. The line’s new Sun Princess ship, launching in February 2024, will feature Spellbound by Magic Castle, a venue with a bar, music room and 30-seat theater featuring close-up magic.

3. The events felt communal

The magic-themed events took place in the 950-person Princess Theater and smaller venues around the ship, and after attending a few, I saw some of the same faces over and over. As I chatted with other attendees who were passionate or at least curious about magic, I felt a sense of camaraderie.

Theme cruises of all kinds can foster a sense of community , bringing together travelers with shared passions.

Patel, who does magic as a hobby, said he got to talk with professional magicians on board and pick their brains “about what got them in (to magic) and what keeps them in."

Grace Kim, 51, booked the trip three days before it departed after she learned about the magic component. The San Francisco-based producer – a self-described “magic lover” who has been to the Magic Castle seven times – even got to participate in some of the magic. During tricks that called for audience participation, performers chose her multiple times.

“I love being brought up on stage because I'm truly immersed in the magic that way,” she said. “And it's as if the magic was being performed just for me.” Patel was pulled up on stage as well.

Finding community on a theme cruise: From 'Star Trek' lovers to motorcycle enthusiasts

While some events were open to the whole ship, many were exclusive to the group of about 100 guests that selected the Conjurer’s Cruise option, which started at $699 for an inside cabin and included events like shows, lectures and group dining. Princess added the first Conjurer’s Cruise to an existing itinerary that was already at high capacity, but the line is exploring opening its next installment aboard Sun Princess on Nov. 9, 2024, to the whole ship, creating the opportunity for a more immersive experience.

As Kim put it, “I wanted even more magic.”

All 16 Princess Cruises Ships, From Newest to Oldest

Here’s everything you need to know about the Princess Cruises fleet.

Sailors of all ages love Princess Cruises for its quality, service, value, and serene style of cruising.  What’s more, the 2023 T+L World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line   — which is also a WBA Hall of Fame Honoree — tends to steer clear of splashy entertainment (for example, you won’t find go-karts, water slides, or ziplines on board most ships) in favor of more refined activities. Discovery at SEA programming is a standout offering: In partnership with Discovery and Animal Planet, guests can partake in nature-centric onboard activities and shore excursions. Most Princess ships boast a majestic atrium modeled after an Italian piazza, and it’s here where you’ll find some of the best drinking, dining, and shopping venues on board.

According to travel advisor and cruise specialist Jennaca Boose of Marvelous Mouse Travels , Princess’ fleet of 15 ships — 16 if you count the upcoming Sun Princess , which will make its long-anticipated debut this year — is family-friendly, and each vessel is “equipped to entertain all ages;” however, some cater towards specific age demographics better than others. For example, she says, travelers sailing with younger children will especially love Royal Princess and Regal Princess , which “have even more to offer” beyond the kids club, such as “outdoor play areas with jungle gyms and a separate teen space with a hot tub.” Meanwhile, says Boose, cruisers craving an intimate onboard experience may consider sailing aboard Coral Princess or Island Princess , which are two of the line’s smaller ships.

Finally, it’s also worth noting that the line offers dozens, if not hundreds, of itineraries across the globe, including Alaska, Mexico, Japan, the Mediterranean, and many more. “Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway or an immersive cultural itinerary,” says Boose, “Princess has a ship for you.” Without further ado, keep scrolling for a breakdown of each ship in the Princess Cruises fleet to help you narrow down which vessels would be best for you.

Emerald Princess

Passengers can also perfect their swing at the putting course, enjoy poolside movie screenings, unwind at one of several swanky bars and lounges, including the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, hit the spa, or dance the night away at the onboard club. In summary, it’s pretty much impossible to be bored on this ship.

Crown Princess

Inaugural Year: 2006

Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity , Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub.

Diamond Princess

Plus, as part of the line’s partnership with Discovery, guests can enjoy nature-filled activities and lectures.

Sapphire Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests

After dancing the night away, adults can spend the day relaxing at The Sanctuary, while families will surely appreciate the dedicated spaces for kids, tweens, and teens.

Island Princess

Inaugural Year: 2003

Ship Class: Coral

Ship Capacity: 2,200 guests

Island Princess was purposefully built to sail through the Panama Canal. This 2,200-guest, 20-plus-year-old ship offers a more refined onboard experience compared to the line’s newer, flashier vessels. Sea days are well spent at the spa, in swimming pools, or sipping cocktails in the massive atriums; come nighttime, watch movies under the stars (a Princess staple) or catch live musical performances before hitting the sack — and getting ready to do it all again the following day.

Coral Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,000 guests

Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.

Grand Princess

Inaugural Year: 1998

Ship Capacity: 2,600 guests

Princess’ oldest ship underwent a major renovation back in 2019, adding fan-favorite restaurants like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, and Coffee & Cones. Catch a Broadway-style show, relax at The Sanctuary, or partake in nature-centric activities as part of the line’s Discovery at SEA programming.

Yorktown no longer a stop for Princess Cruises this summer; Norfolk new destination

princess cruises in usa

YORKTOWN, Va. — Princess Cruises has made a big change of plans for its cruise ships that are coming to our area this summer.

York County officials say they got an email from Princess Cruises stating that the cruise line has decided to move its planned stops from Yorktown to Norfolk.

County officials shared the following portion of the email they received from Princess Cruises:

“To ensure our guests experience legendary Virginian hospitality as they explore the region’s significant historical contributions to American history, Princess is confirming Norfolk on the published itinerary for Island Princess and its three new calls to the Commonwealth this summer.”

The initial plan, announced in Feb. 2023, was to have Princess Cruises cruise ships make three stops in Yorktown this June. Two ships, the Island Princess and the Emerald Princess, were scheduled to visit.

The county says beyond the email, Princess Cruises didn't share any additional information regarding the move.

The York County Board of Supervisors shared the following statement on the cancelled cruise stops:

“While we no longer anticipate passengers from Princess Cruise Lines to be among the guests we host, we are sure that they will find other excellent examples of Virginia hospitality at their port in Norfolk. Yorktown will continue to be the destination of choice for river cruise lines, dining cruises and historical tall ships throughout the coming years for local residents and our visitors to enjoy.”

Nauticus' Executive Director, Stephen E. Kirkland, provided the following statement about the cruise stops moving to Norfolk:

“Nauticus is thrilled to welcome Princess back to Norfolk for ten port visits throughout 2024 and 2025 but make no mistake, this is a win for Hampton Roads. Thousands of guests will enjoy all Norfolk has to offer but also have chance to take amazing shore excursions to Yorktown, Williamsburg, Jamestown, and other nearby locations. Our region is keeping these passengers in Hampton Roads and that’s what’s important.”

The change comes after many Yorktown residents voiced concerns about the impact the heavy foot traffic would have on the historic town. The Island Princess can hold 2,200 passengers - a steep number compared to Yorktown's population of 258.

Williamsburg, James City County, Yorktown

A town divided: Princess cruises to stop in Yorktown in 2024

Last August, a group protested the cruise ships coming to Yorktown.

“We don’t feel that the scale of the ship is appropriate for Yorktown, we aren’t anti tourist, we aren’t anti cruise ships,” concerned citizen Alyssa Adams told News 3. “I don’t know how much money will be made, but we don’t feel like it’s worth the investment in infrastructure and the wear and tear on the roads and the community.”

However, some residents were enthusiastic about the impact cruise line passengers would have on the local economy.

“Overall, it’ll definitely bring a lot more business, a lot more revenue to the shops around here,” said Tyler Price, the assistant manager of dog bakery "Gangsta Dog."

Princess Cruises did not elaborate on their decision to move the stops to Norfolk. However, Holland America Cruise Line - which previously canceled its plans to make stops in Yorktown - cited concerns from residents.

"We weren't aware of the sensitivity to cruise ships in Yorktown..." a Holland America Cruise Line spokesperson said to a York County spokesperson.

Currently, there are no Princess cruise ship stops to Yorktown scheduled in 2024 or beyond, the county says.

News 3's Road to Las Vegas

I booked a 7-day Alaska cruise for $799 but actually spent $2,800 with extras. Take a closer look at what made it so pricey.

  • I thought I got a great deal this summer when I booked a seven-day Alaska cruise for $799 a person.
  • I spent $2,800 on excursions, WiFi, a drinks package, port fees, and specialty dining.
  • Even though I paid $2,000 more than the base price, it was worth it.

Insider Today

I'm an experienced cruiser who has sailed around the globe, so I was excited to take my husband on his first cruise last summer to celebrate his birthday.

We chose a seven-day Princess Cruise to Alaska in and out of Seattle on the Royal Princess . The ship would visit the Inside Passage with a day cruising in Glacier Bay National Park , two full days at sea, stops at Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan in Alaska, and a stop at Victoria in Canada.

I had cruised with Princess before and liked how it offers a sweet spot between casual and luxurious. It was also the first time we had visited Alaska, and since seven Princess ships sail there, I felt confident that they were experts in cruising America's last frontier.

The base price for the cruise was $799 a person, which included an interior stateroom, all meals not served in specialty restaurants, and entertainment.

I thought that was cheap, but as an experienced cruiser, I knew there would be extras, such as WiFi, beverages, excursions, and upscale dining.

In the end, I spent just over $2,800 a person — $2,000 more than the base price. While it wasn't the cheap deal I originally booked, considering our fabulous trip, I thought the price was well worth it.

Here's a closer look at how we spent our money.

The base price included many things on board the Royal Princess.

princess cruises in usa

The Royal Princess is a large ship with 1,780 cabins for 3,560 guests. There are 19 passenger decks, eight with guest accommodations.

Our stateroom was 170 square feet, which felt compact but was just right for two people. We had a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a shower.

The ship felt like a gigantic floating hotel and most amenities and activities were included in the fare. That included access to two swimming pools, eight hot tubs, a spa, a fitness center, and a variety of dining venues, from buffets to a pizzeria. Specialty and upscale dining cost extra, but more on that later.

My first purchase was the Princess Premier Package, which cost $80 a person a day.

princess cruises in usa

Along with my base fare, I purchased the Princess Premier Package for myself for $80 a person a day.

The package includes WiFi for up to four devices, alcoholic beverages and wine by the glass worth up to $20, unlimited drinks from the juice bar, specialty coffee, and premium desserts such as gelato.

Crew gratuity, room service, fitness classes, and two meals at specialty restaurants are also part of the package.

You have to purchase the package for the duration of the cruise, which totaled $560 for me for seven days.

My biggest additional expenses came from shore excursions.

princess cruises in usa

The cruise had stops in Alaska in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, as well as in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

As much as I enjoy shipboard life, to really experience Alaska, I knew I wanted to disembark and explore each port.

While it's free to simply leave the boat and walk around each port, with only a day in most locations, I thought I'd get a better sense of the destination by booking official shore excursions hosted by the cruise line. These excursions are soup-to-nuts packages that take care of all the details and make the most of the time in each port.

You can still book excursions with local tour operators unaffiliated with the cruise line, but I preferred booking all of mine through Princess because I knew the day would be tailored around when I needed to be back on the boat.

I booked each excursion in advance — I know from experience that popular shore excursions tend to sell out — and spent $930 total a person on all three of them.

I spent $480 a person for a luxury whale-watching tour in Juneau.

princess cruises in usa

Our first port of call was Juneau, Alaska.

There, I booked an all-inclusive, four-hour luxury whale-watching group tour on a yacht with room for eight passengers. It cost my husband and I $480 each.

Once off the ship, a representative greeted us and drove the group to Auke Bay to board our yacht, which felt swanky with its leather seats and polished chrome.

Our crew included the captain and Emma, a naturalist, who helped us spot wildlife. Emma encouraged questions and was a wealth of information on all things Alaska.

The yacht brought us incredibly close to orcas, humpback whales, harbor seals, and sea lions. Champagne, Alaskan beer, and a big charcuterie platter were included in the price, too.

It was a once-in-a lifetime experience, and well worth the $480-a-person cost.

I paid $210 to kayak in Skagway, Alaska.

princess cruises in usa

I love kayaking and didn't want to miss the chance to paddle in Alaska, so I booked Princess' Chilkoot Lake Kayak Experience for $210 a person.

We joined 20 other passengers on a high-speed, 45-minute ferry ride to Haines. As our ferry journeyed through a deep fjord, we saw whales breaching, eagles soaring, and bears along the shoreline.

When we arrived in Haines, a bus drove us to the lake, where a guide gave us a brief lesson on paddling technique before we hopped into double and triple kayaks on blue water surrounded by tall peaks.

We paddled for about 90 minutes before the coach brought us back to the ferry. A simple picnic lunch of sandwiches, chips, and hot coffee awaited us as part of our rate.

A tour of totem poles, a salmon cannery, and a rainforest walk cost $240 each.

princess cruises in usa

Ketchikan was our last stop in Alaska. It's an excellent destination to explore Native Alaskan culture, particularly to learn about totem poles.

I booked the Best of Ketchikan: Totems, Wildlife Cruise & Alaska Appetizers excursion, a four-hour tour for $240 a person.

Our group of 16 began the trip with a narrated wildlife cruise to a former salmon cannery where a guided tour and interactive exhibits helped us understand the importance of salmon canning to the state's growth.

Next, we snacked on locally made reindeer sausage and wild-berry cookies.

Well-fortified, we took a short walk through the rainforest before getting on a bus to Saxman Native Village to watch totem poles being hand-carved and to view a collection of them.

Back on board the ship, I paid $60 for access to an adults-only space.

princess cruises in usa

The Sanctuary is an adults-only, outdoor area at the ship's bow where you can reserve a chaise lounge for a half or full day for $20 or $40, respectively.

It's the only section of the ship where you can have a tranquil, adult-only outdoor experience, with room for approximately 30 people.

We went once, on our scenic-cruise day — the day the ship traversed Glacier Bay National Park.

I knew the ship would be hectic on this day because every passenger was on board and wanted a good view of the passing scenery.

As such, a half day in the Sanctuary cost $60 — more than any other day.

But our access provided us with a front-row seat as we sailed by breathtakingly beautiful glaciers.

Plus, there were only a few dozen other passengers there, and the helpful staff kept bringing us extra blankets to offset the chilly air. A breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, smoked salmon, croissants, and more took the experience up a notch.

I happily forked over $22 for sushi in a specialty restaurant.

princess cruises in usa

Many restaurants, including the three main dining rooms with waiter service, buffets, and a pizzeria are included in the base cruise price, but several upscale-dining spots incur an extra charge.

But because I'm a sushi fanatic, I knew I'd pay extra to eat at Ocean Terrace, the ship's sushi bar.

We ordered an assortment of sushi, sashimi, and edamame for lunch. It was extremely fresh, and I thought it was well worth the $22 a person we paid. Unlike some other upscale dining options, my meal was not a flat fee, but based on what I ordered.

Considering other sushi meals I've had, I thought it was inexpensive and had I discovered it sooner, I would have eaten at Ocean Terrace several more times.

For my husband's birthday, I booked the chef's table for $130 a person with wine pairings.

princess cruises in usa

On my husband's actual birthday, I wanted him to have a VIP culinary experience.

I booked the upscale chef's table for $130 per person with wine pairings. The chef personally greeted us to discuss the menu and how he chose and sourced ingredients, making it an interesting experience for foodies like us.

The intimate dinner took place in a private section of the dining room at a table set with fine china and crisp linens.

Two other couples we didn't know joined us, but by the end of the meal, we'd forged a casual shipboard friendship. There's no dress code, but it was a great opportunity to wear our fanciest outfits.

We started with Champagne and hors d'oeuvres before a feast of ceviche, creamy risotto, tender filet mignon, and an individual strawberry cake. The food was luscious, though it was the presentation and service that made it truly memorable.

I paid $35 for a repeat meal at Sabatini's Italian restaurant.

princess cruises in usa

While most specialty dining incurs an extra fee, two meals at premium restaurants were included as a perk my Princess Premier Package.

One was at the ship's steakhouse, Crown Grill, and another was at the Italian restaurant, Sabatini's.

My husband is Italian, and I lived in Italy for many years, so we are tough critics when it comes to Italian cuisine. But we liked our meal so much that we returned a second time and paid $35 a person to do so.

We enjoyed paper-thin slices of tender veal topped with a rich tuna-and-caper sauce that gave my favorite trattoria in Milan a run for its money. Other standouts included spaghetti in a briny sauce of scallops, shrimp, clams, mussels, and baked striped bass with polenta.

Finally, port fees and taxes cost an extra $272 a person.

New cruisers might not realize they'll always have to pay for three things, even if they skip all specialty experiences and excursions: gratuities, taxes, and port fees.

My gratuities were included in the Princess Premier Package, but port fees and taxes cost us an extra $272 a person. These are for the charges your ship pays to dock at various ports of call. Passengers pay these fees, which are not included in the base price of the cruise.

My total cost for the cruise was $2,808 a person, and I have no regrets.

All of my cruise extras came to $2,009. With the $799 I paid when I initially booked the cruise, the grand total for just me came to $2,808. For both me and my husband, it was $5,616 in total.

While it was a lot more than initially advertised, it was an unforgettable experience that was worth every penny. I would spend it again in a heartbeat.

GALVESTON, Texas – A ferocious storm that struck a cruise ship while in the Gulf of Mexico Friday left at least one cabin flooded as torrential rains poured down.

Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas first encountered hail as the ship was heading back to its home port of Galveston, Texas .

Water flows into the cabin.

Video from a passenger inside their cabin shows hail that can be heard striking the glass door and seen bouncing on a black chair outside and then falling onto a pool of water on the floor.

As heavy rains fall, water on the balcony can then floods into the cabin itself, soaking a path through the carpet, under a bed and leading to the door.

The dark portion of the carpet shows where the floodwater flowed into the cabin from the balcony.

"Hope there’s nothing electrical that we’re gonna get electrocuted on," said Jessica Helms, who filmed the flooding in her cabin.

She referred to the flooding as a "complete river" that extended across the hall to her neighbor’s room.
