The Alaska you dreamed of only one hour from Anchorage. Allow us to get you up close and personal with one of Alaska's most spectacular natural wonders. Glaciers and glacier ice are something you don't want to miss. Giant icebergs calve off the glacier daily. Some the size of sky scrapers. Occasionally the giant icebergs will roll revealing turquoise blue ice that appears to be lit from within. Half the fun is getting there. The tour begins with a half hour safari ride in our giant 4x4 trucks and vans. We travel four miles crossing rivers and going through some exceptional moose habitat. Animal sightings are common. Ok that was fun. Now we get into our custom extreme shallow Jet boat's and Airboat. We travel another 4 miles by boat passing the occasional stray icebergs and looking for wildlife on the shore. You will barley believe your eyes as we round the last corner and the Knik Glacier and icebergs come into view. Get ready to ooh and aah as this is one of south central Alaska's greatest glaciers. Over 6 miles across and 28 miles long. We will cruise around the icebergs and get you some great pics. We pull ashore for a hour long visit to our Glacier Camp. Pull up a chair and watch the show or take a hike. Coffee Hot chocolate and a snack are included. We're not done yet. Another boat ride down river and another safari ride and we are back to the office. The whole tour is about 3 hrs. It is truly our hopes to provide you with the highlight of your Alaskan adventure. …

Awesome tour. Tom is great. We even stayed the night in his big field. Was quiet and peaceful. The ride in the truck is so cool and the boat ride as well. I just can't say enough about this tour. Just do it!!!!

This Knik Glacier Tour was cool. It was fun. But...3 days ago I toured Matanuska Glacier and the two experiences weren't close. The biggest reason why I much, much, more admired Matanuska Glacier is that I was able to hike onto the glacier and get up close and intimate moments among wonderful surroundings. Meanwhile, here at Knik Glacier, you're just transported just to the edge of the Knik River where the Knik Icefield is set in the backdrop. So...I wasn't fully able to capture this Knik Glacier in all its glory in comparison to Matanuska Glacier. I will say...when I zoomed in on my phone to take photos of the Knik Glacier Icefield area...the pics came out very well. But...when I wanted to put myself into the camera's lens...the moments weren't so fulfilling, and especially since I was coming off such a high at Matanuska Glacier. I'd say, ultimately, Knik Glacier had a lot to live up to from what I had experienced just a few short days ago. Still, no problem, I very much liked my time here. I enjoyed the 3-hour tour I took. Only thing, upon now reflecting... Knik Glacier was very good...just not epically great. And the reason I compare Matanuska Glacier to this Knik Glacier is because they're located so close to each other...within miles of each other in the Palmer/Sutton-Alpine area of Southern Alaska. Let me relay the details about my 3-hour daytrip I took with Knik Glacier Tours... (btw, I believe there are helicopter tours offered where you land on Knik Glacier, but I was okay with navigating without the luxury flight option.) - It was $125 plus tax for the tour = $132. I also tipped $10 each to 2 of the tour guides at the end. - For the 3 hour tour, it broke down like this... * The first 35 minutes are navigated along on the back of an old army jeep vehicle. You'll pass over a bumpy road and through a few rivers. * From the end of the land portion of the tour...you then hop on a waterskiing boat where you'll be transported for about 20 minutes to the edge or "toe" of Knik Glacier. * Then you're afforded 1 full hour to explore along the edge of the land at your own accord, capturing pictures and venturing around...looking out upon Knik's many icebergs and the large icefield in the distance. * While on this 1-hour walk around (at your own pace)...the tour sets up a little picnic/tent area where they offer free hot chocolate and small snack items. For myself, I was so enamored with trying to snap the best and most efficient photos of Knik Glacier, I barely spent any time over at the tent area. * After the 1-hour walk along the river's edge...we then hopped back onto the waterskiing boat where the tour guide drove us straight up to some of the massive icebergs where we were afforded up-close perspectives of nature's natural wonders. We used about 15 minutes guiding through the glacial icebergs before being transported back towards the jeep land excursion and then finally to home base. - I visited and did this Knik Glacier Tour today, July 12th, 2002...and although it was pleasant outside wearing pants and long sleeves, the jeep driver recommended that I bring along a jacket because he mentioned how chilly it got out on the Knik River boat ride. And he was correct. The cold air rushing at me while heading towards the glacier was quite cold. The jacket certainly came in handy! - Although I'll post a photo of my confirmation email about the trip and where the tour begins...tours depart from this address... * 26326 E Buckshot Drive Palmer, AK 99645 - There were 7 people on my 10am tour including myself. This was a nice, personal experience. Not many people with me at all. At the Knik River's edge...we were all able to spread out and go our own ways. Overall, I appreciated my time exploring Knik Glacier. But...if you gave me the choice of doing only 1 glacial tour in this area situated about 50 - 100 miles east of Anchorage...I'd definitely choose Matanuska Glacier over this Knik Glacier. For those folks who have the time to check out both tours...then I found them each worthwhile and good in their own elements, sights and landscapes. And it's because of these glaciers and being immersed among incredible settings that I find Alaska to be one of the prettiest states in the USA.

Super Cold, but Super Duper Awesome! (Thankfully they had overcoats to put on over our own coats.) We did the AM tour in early August. As part of our "see and touch glaciers" via ground, air and water adventures over the course of 10 days..... this was the see and touch via monster truck and jet boat glacier tour. So... you load up into a deuce and a half army surplus truck. It's a big monster truck. There's no graceful way to get in. They have a regular ladder like you have at home... you climb to the top and then scootch yourself into the truck. There are bench seats on each site of the truck bed. It's open, so you're going to get all kinds of fresh air. It's a few miles from where you load up into the truck to where you then get in the boat to the glacier. The truck crosses / drives partially in/along the river. It felt more adventurous than it probably actually was. Whatever, I was thrilled. Once you get to wherever we were going... we unload... again not so gracefully. Walk a short short way to where the jet boats are. Each boat held 7 people plus the driver. The jet boats were fast and the wind was whipping through our hair. I had a firm grip on my mom in case. I thought maybe we might hit a bump or something and she'd go flying. I don't know why I thought this. Dumb... it was smooth ride! Travis our boat driver took great care of us. I think our driver did the BEST job! He cruised us up along the glacier and the icebergs so we could get really close and snap a ton of pictures. Then we stopped and jumped off the boat for a short trek to a little tent to get some hot cocoa and chocolate and trail mix. We had enough time to explore the little area of the Knik Glacier where we were at. We couldn't go far since we were mostly surrounded by ice or water from what I could see. It was pretty neat though. I liked it. Plus, we had some time to visit with the other folks and the drivers to learn about where they were from, how long they had been in Alaska, etc... Definitely an all ages tour. I would say you have to have some decent mobility to climb the ladder into and out of the truck and to get in/out of the jet boat and to then walk the narrow dirt trail to the coffee/cocoa hut.

Did a tour with Will and he was great. Did the 60 min tour with him and stopped on a glacier. One of the best experiences I've done!!

This was a definite highlight of our visit to the Wasilla-Palmer area! We had a big group of 27, and Tom and his staff were amazing. Every point in the trip got better and better. The truck ride was so fun, especially crossing the river. Then we moved on to the boats, where the views just got more and more unbelievable as we approached the glacier. When we landed near the glacier, we had an hour to explore and soak in the beauty around us. An unexpected treat was a tent and picnic table set up in a sheltered spot where we were offered coffee, hot chocolate, and a small snack. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting an up close experience with a glacier!

This is absolutely the best tour I've been on! It was interesting, informative, and a whole lotta fun! It's a little strenuous for a lazy, Old lady of 56, but totally worth it and would do it again in a heartbeat. If you are ever in the beautiful State of Alaska, take time and go in this glacial tour. You won't regret it!!!!

Photo of Brandon L.

Don't think twice about this tour just go. This was the highlight of our trip. The workers were respectful, friendly, and did everything they could to make the tour special. Every time we saw a moose or bald eagle they made sure we got up close in the boat. The glaciers are surreal and pictures don't do it justice. Tom and his team do an amazing job and I would recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Alaska.

My uncle came up for two weeks this summer and, while tooling around down Knik Glacier Rd, saw signs for these guys. Signed us up for a tour two days later, and it was the highlight of his trip! As an Alaskan, I've tooled around on a fair number of glaciers. I take all out-of-town guests to Matanuska, I've hiked a few of them in the Portage/Whittier area, but I haven't ever been to Knik, since I didn't realize it was this easy. $125 gets you a 4-mile ride in the back of a military 6-wheeler. We had four water crossings out to the boats - one on the Knik itself, and three through smaller tributaries. Tom wrangled the truck while Randy talked about the area - everything from wind and rain patterns to cool spots to see the Northern Lights and the fish runs this summer. Once we got to the river, the guides loaded our group into two jetboats. We passed floating glacier ice as we zoomed up the river. It was a gorgeous July day, but I was glad I keep a big jacket and hat in the car. Bundle up! Gloves, hat, jacket, the works. You'll regret it if you don't. After navigating the glacial lake so we could take pictures, the guides took us across the lake from the glacier where we could admire the view while taking pictures and sipping hot coffee or hot cocoa at their picnic table. We had maybe half an hour there before heading back - a total of three hours. I was absolutely thrilled by the views, by the guides, by the tour in general - it's a must-do next summer with friends and visitors!

Photo of Kristy C.

This activity is a total blast for all ages. We had seniors and children in our group and everyone thought it was thrilling without being dangerous or physically strenuous. Tom and Randy were both so kind, knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating. This is a must do activity if you're in the Anchorage area.

A great adventure!! Fun for kids and grandparents. My favorite part was driving through the river in the ATV. The guides were very polite and gracious. The scenery was spectacular! I really enjoyed the camp experience when we could just walk around and look at nature's beauty. The owner doesn't advertise for the purpose of keeping his groups small in size. He wants to preserve the quiet and intimacy of the experience. I admire that.

Alaska Helicopter Tours Knik Glacier Landing Review

Flightseeing is an incredible way to experience Alaska and one of the best ways to experience Alaska’s glaciers . This enormous land is just begging to be seen from the air to fully appreciate its vastness and Knik Glacier is the perfect place to do it.

A blue pool of water on Knik Glacier surrounded by white and gray ice and high snow covered and glaciated mountains

Alaska Helicopter Tours provides the ideal opportunity to do this, as well as to get safely onto a summer glacier to see those gorgeous blue pools of water. This is a particularly good option for any slightly nervous flyers as the helicopter ride for the Knik Glacier Landing is relatively short and absolutely spectacular. This experience is also ideal if you have some extra time before your flight out of Anchorage as it’s a very convenient half day experience – they even provide a shuttle from Anchorage if you don’t have a car.

There are MANY wonderful flightseeing opportunities in Alaska (like helicopters to dog sledding, float planes to remote areas, helicopters to ice fields and flying above the Arctic Circle). I’ve been lucky enough as a former Alaskan and a guide and travel writer who spends several weeks there are year to participate in several flightseeing experiences.

Similar to the Denali Flightseeing tour with glacier landing (my other favorite!), the location of Alaska Helicopter Tours base near Palmer has fewer flights cancelled due to weather than some other parts of Alaska (like Southeast Alaska and Katmai National Park – which are also amazing).

Let me tell you a bit more about what to expect on this wonderful tour. This review covers my experience on the tour in May 2024. If you’d like to feel like you’re there with me, check out this short video of the helicopter landing on Knik Glacier and taking off again.

Where does Alaska Helicopter Tours fly from?

The helipad is at the Alaska Glacier Lodge about 50 miles northeast of Anchorage on Knik River Road. To get there, drive out the Glenn Highway and turn right on the Old Glenn Highway just before the Knik River bridge and then go straight/right on Knik River Road when the Old Glenn Highway goes left over the river towards Palmer. The road dead ends at the helipad.

Getting to Alaska Helicopter Tours without a car

If you don’t have a car, no problem! They have a shuttle van that goes from the downtown hotels in Anchorage out to the lodge, which takes about an hour. There is an additional charge for the shuttle but it’s much less than renting a car and a great option if you’re going car free or if you want to return your rental car a day early and head out to the glacier before you go to the airport.

Who is the Knik Glacier Landing Helicopter tour best for?

This is an amazing experience for anyone who wants to get up close and personal with a glacier and also for those who want to take in the vastness of Alaska’s landscape from the air without too much time in an aircraft. It’s also an ideal experience for anyone who wants to experience a helicopter ride in a stunning location.

Jennie, wearing sunglasses, a knit hat and a red jacket on Knik Glacier with ice, blue pools and mountains behind her.

I also highly recommend a helicopter tour for anyone who craves solitude. You will be with 2-4 other guests on your helicopter (depending on the model) and while exploring the glacier. It’s really amazing to be with just a couple other people in this beautiful place.

When is the best time of year to take a helicopter to Knik Glacier?

You can do this all year. However, if you want to see the blue pools, those are only visible in the summer when the snow is melted and the ice melts (May – September).

Listen to Dawn from Alaska Helicopter Tours share about Helicopter flying

Wheelchair accessibility.

Contact Alaska Helicopter Tours directly about navigating getting in and out of the helicopter as a wheelchair user – they will do everything they can to make it work for you if they know in advance! The helicopter is quite close to the ground so does not require stairs to get in.

What to expect on your flight

When you arrive at the Alaska Glacier Lodge, check in at the building with the restaurant and deck. This is also the check in point for the lodge.

There are likely to be several helicopters departing at the same time, so you’ll need to be patient while everyone gets checked in. You will need to step on a scale to get an accurate weight with all your clothes/gear on. Make sure you have everything on you you are bringing in the helicopter before your weigh in.

Once everyone is checked in they’ll give you a safety briefing and then take you out to the helipad. Let the staff show you where to go and help you get settled for your safety and also to keep things running smoothly.

Once everyone is on board and you’re ready for lift off, you’ll fly up and over the Knik River to Knik Glacier and fly over the glacier before landing on it. You’ll see amazing mountains in all direction, the glacier below you and have an excellent chance of spotting wildlife below you on the flight – especially mountain goats, dall sheep, moose and bears. When I went, we saw lots of mountain goats in both directions.

The view through the front of a helicopter showing a sillouetted pilot and passenger. A glacier river and glacier and mountains are visible in front on the helicopter

When you land on the glacier your pilot will let the engine cool down and then help you step out of the helicopter. Make sure to stay where the pilot directs you to go and return to your seat at the time your pilot tells you to.

A blue helicopter sitting on a glacier with ice, blue pools and mountains in the background

You’ll follow a similar route, though probably on the other side of the valley when you return to the helipad at the lodge.

How long is the helicopter ride?

The helicopter ride to land on Knik Glacier is about 15 minutes in each direction, leaving you about 25 minutes to explore on the glacier. These estimates vary based on the weather and other factors, but in general this is what to expect. Some of other tours have a slightly longer ride.

What can I bring on the helicopter?

Not much! You can bring what you can fit in your pockets and that’s it. Make sure you have sunscreen on and sunglasses and I’d recommend a couple of layers for cooler glacier temperatures (although the sun can be very intense).

Make sure your phone or camera is fully charged and ready to document the experience for you. You can not bring any back up batteries on the helicopter so make sure you have everything charged up.

You can also bring a waterbottle to drink some glacier water – pretty fun! Don’t miss out!

Other tour options with Alaska Helicopter Tours

If you want a longer helicopter experience or what more big adventures, Alaska Helicopter tours also offers glacier dog sledding in the summer, heli hiking, heli paddle boarding and kayaking (whaaaaaat?!?) and more.

In winter they offer heli skiing and heli ice skating (so cool!) among other winter adventures.

Grand Knik Tour

3 epic landings, 2 epic hours, One Epic experience

See the best there is to offer in South Central Alaska!

This is one of our staff favorites as you have time to really experience the stunning beauty of the area by combining three activities. Fly by helicopter to Lake George, awarded Natural Landmark status for its scenic beauty. As the helicopter descents you’ll realize the scale of the glacier and icebergs; everything out here is XXL size! Some of the ‘bergs’ are the size of apartment buildings and take two years to melt. You will have a half hour to explore the shores as you take in the massive size of the ice and take pictures of the lake with Colony glacier in the background. For your second landing, you will fly high above to an alpine meadow where you will have a unique birds eye view of the massive Knik glacier below, with Colony and Cataract glacier across Lake George. There is a good chance we’ll see bears foraging along the hillsides during the flight. We almost always see moose and Dall sheep. Finally, your grande adventure has you flying to the middle of the Knik Glacier for a third landing at the azure colored melt pools. See the deep blue ice, and learn about the life cycle of glaciers and why they are so important to human life across the globe. You will have another half hour to safely explore the glacier with your experienced pilot / guide. Don’t forget your water bottle so you can fill it up with that crystal clear glacier water! An adventure you will be telling friends and family about for years to come!

Amazing trip from start to finish, a lot better than I could have imagined. There was 0 rush on the glacier , we spent a ton of time hiking around. The pilot was knowledgeable and super fun to chat with during the flight too. Def earned 5 stars, well worth the money. If you go, jump in the water!

GRAND KNIK TOUR - YEAR ROUND

The Alaska Trifecta! Glaciers, icebergs and amazing alpine views. Three remote landings in one phenomenal tour. If you only have one day in Alaska, this is a tour you should consider.

The Alaska Trifecta! Glaciers, icebergs and amazing alpine views.

Grand Knik Tour

This is one of our staff favorites as you have time to really experience the stunning beauty of the area by combining three activities. Fly by helicopter past Lake George, awarded Natural Landmark status for its scenic beauty. As the helicopter flies up what we call moose meadow, keep your eyes peeled for moose on the valley floor. Descending, you’ll realize the scale of the glacier as the ice wall comes into view. Everything out here is XXL size!  You will have a half-hour to explore and take pictures, calving happens often.

For your second landing, you will fly high above to an alpine meadow where you will have a unique birds eye view of the massive  Knik glacier below, with Colony and Cataract glacier across Lake George . There is a good chance we’ll see bears foraging along the hillsides during the flight. We almost always see moose and Dall sheep.

Finally, your grande adventure has you flying to the middle of the Knik Glacier for a third landing at the azure colored melt pools. See the deep blue ice, and learn about the life cycle of glaciers and why they are so  important to human life across the globe . You will have another half hour to safely explore the glacier with your experienced pilot / guide. Don't forget your water bottle so you can fill it up with that crystal clear glacier water! An adventure you will be telling friends and family about for years to come!

**OFFERED YEAR ROUND**

Knik Glacier Tours

Frequently asked questions.

We answer your questions about our tours here. If you have any more questions, please call us any time!

How can we get to the Knik Glacier?

The primary way people visit the Knik Glacier is by Airboat, Jet boat, helicopter or fixed wing aircraft.

A pack raft is the easiest and cheapest way to get to the Knik Glacier. An 8 mile trail departs from our office with one water crossing.

Fat tire bikes are allowed and can make it quicker.

Do you pick up from hotels?

Unfortunately we do not offer shuttle service. Guests usually arrive self-driven.

Do we get to walk on the glacier?

We do not get on the glacier for this tour. The iceberg filled lake prevents access to the face of the glacier.

Glacier Camp is situated on the glacier's terminal moraine.

What age is appropriate?

We have taken 2-year-old to 95-year-old guests on this tour.

For toddlers, one consideration is hearing protection on the boat. Toddlers must be held with earmuffs while on the airboat.

The terrain at the glacier is very rocky, some of them are very sharp. Not a great place for learning to walk.

This is wilderness! We have bears and moose visit Glacier Camp. Children need to be closely supervised at all times!

Elderly and Disabled

We will do our best to help anybody that is physically capable to take this tour.

You will need to be able to climb a 3 step ladder to get in and out of our big trucks.

There is a small hill we have to climb to get to Glacier Camp the terrain is uneven and rocky.

Some guests with limited mobility have chosen to just stay on the boat while we visit Glacier Camp. We will bring them a hot drink and a snack.

The safari portion of the tour is pretty bumpy. Although nobody has ever gotten sick, we have had a couple close calls.

If you have severe motion sickness you may want to opt out or take something before the tour.

Is it cold at the glacier?

You can expect the glacier to be 10 to 15 degree cooler than everywhere else. On a hot sunny day this is very refreshing.

Are the bugs bad?

Due to the dry desert ecosystem we have fewer mosquitos or black flies than anywhere in Alaska.

What is your cancelation Policy?

You can cancel up to 24hrs prior to departure for a full refund.

Do you ever cancel due to weather?

Occasionally wind and rain can create unsafe conditions. We will cancel tours when we determine conditions unsafe. We will do our best to reschedule or issue a full refund.

What if its cloudy overcast or rainy? Do we still have to go?

We let you make the call. We can reschedule or issue a full refund.
