How The Camry’s Adaptive Cruise Control Works

Mechanical Details of the DRCC

On any stretch of road, cruise control allows you to give your leg a rest by automatically engaging the vehicle to continue on at current speed while at the same time depending on your input for minor steering changes and braking. The DRCC goes a step further, using active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to automatically brake the vehicle when another car enters into the lane in front of you. Using radar technology, the vehicle gauges the speed of the car ahead of your own and then automatically adjusts your vehicle speed to maintain the preset following distance. It’s almost like having a car drive itself.

As time goes by, there will be a lot more advances in drive assist controls, but for now the DRCC from Toyota is the most advanced system currently on the market. Additional safety is always a positive thing and Toyota has been mindful of the safety of its vehicle occupants from day one. If you’re interested in trying out Toyota’s DRCC, you can check out Warrenton Toyota in Warrenton, VA today and get a feel for this remarkable new technology yourself!

2021 Toyota Camry is first to get Safety Sense 2.5 Plus

One of America's most popular sedans is getting a safety-minded tech infusion, along with other small improvements.

toyota camry cruise control 2021

The 2021 Toyota Camry will be techier than ever.

Toyota's Camry has been America's best-selling sedan for 18 consecutive years. Babies that were driven home from the hospital when this model began topping the sales charts can now vote. To help maintain its sales crown for yet another turn of the calendar, Toyota has just announced a slew of updates for its venerable Camry, tweaking the model range, enhancing the car's design and, perhaps most importantly, adding even more tech.

Updated looks across the range

Peering at the images seen here, it's tough to tell what's new initially and, truth be told, there aren't any major visual changes. Comfort-focused LE and XLE models are dressed up with more defined lower air intakes. The former gets new 17-inch alloy wheels, the latter rolls on redesigned 18s. Inside, XLE models feature a new herringbone seat pattern for an extra touch of luxury.

If you want a little spice in your Camry, sportier SE and XSE grades are still an option. For 2021, they feature a bolder lower fascia design complete with honeycomb inserts. Also, brand spankin' new for the upcoming model year is an XSE hybrid model, which offers incredible fuel efficiency and greater style.

The 2021 Toyota Camry gets a nip, a tuck and a sprinkle of new tech

toyota camry cruise control 2021

Interestingly, one thing has been eliminated for 2021. The base L grade is no more. The Camry LE will now serve as the entry-level model. Altogether, 17 different variants of this car will be offered, three models with a V6, five with the four-pot engine and front-wheel drive, another five with that same powerplant and all-wheel drive, plus four different hybrid grades.

The sporty Camry TRD model has been further refined as well. Introduced for 2020, its design pretty much stands pat, save for a newly available, exclusive two-tone paint combination, Ice Edge with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 Plus

When it comes to driver-assistance tech, the 2021 Camry is the first model to gain Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 Plus, which offers several new features. The pre-collision system with pedestrian detection can now recognize cyclists in the daytime and pedestrians in low-light situations, in addition to other vehicles. This system also features something called intersection support, which can improve safety in around-town driving. When turning left, it can detect oncoming traffic, sound an audio or visual alarm and even brake automatically in certain situations to prevent a nasty head-on collision. Beyond all that, Toyota engineers added something called emergency steering assist, which can help stabilize the vehicle in its lane of travel during evasive maneuvers, such as when avoiding a cyclist or another vehicle.

Toyota's updated adaptive cruise control system has further been enhanced with a feature that makes it easier to pass other vehicles. If you're stuck behind slower-moving traffic, you can activate the turn signal and as you begin to steer into the other lane it will automatically start accelerating up to the preset speed to make overtaking more seamless.

2021 Toyota Camry interior

Camry will now be available with two different infotainment screen sizes.

As you might expect, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 Plus also features lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Automatic high beams and road sign recognition are bundled, as well.

A rear-seat reminder feature is also coming to the Camry for 2021. As with similar systems from other automakers, it's designed to prevent you from forgetting anything in the car, be it a package, laptop bag or something far more critical, like a pet or sleeping child.

Rounding out this sedan's driver-assistance tech, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard fare on XSE and XLE models. On lower end LE, SE and SE Nightshade grades, it's now available as an option. As for the sporty TRD model , blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and heated side-view mirrors are now standard equipment.

It's what's inside that counts

New for the latest model year is a pair of floating infotainment screens. The standard touch-enabled display measures 7 inches, though the up-level offering clocks in at a more generous 9 inches. Having tested that larger display in the 2021 RAV4 Prime plug-in SUV, it is quite nice, with ample screen real estate, which makes icons large and very finger friendly. For added flexibility, even the base infotainment system supports  Apple CarPlay , Amazon Alexa compatibility and even  Android Auto .

Minor interior changes to the Camry include some new trims. Once again, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat is standard across the model range while ventilated front chairs are offered on XLE and XSE models, something that can be a godsend in sweltering summer weather.

2021 Toyota Camry - rear three-quarter view

The 2021 Camry's design changes are subtle.

More of the same

When it comes to nuts-and-bolts enhancements, there's not much to report. The Camry's base engine remains a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with, depending on model, up to 206 horsepower. For drivers that want a little more juice, a smooth-running 3.5-liter V6 is once again on the menu, brandishing 301 hp. Both of these engines are matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission, though all-wheel drive is only offered with the base I4. A North America-only combination, AWD expected to account for around 15% of Camry sales.

Of course, a Camry hybrid is once again available. Its powertrain is centered around a 2.5-liter engine, which is augmented by a pair of motor-generators. Here, total system output clocks in at 208 hp. The hybrid Camry should deliver performance that's similar to what the base engine provides, though you're probably not getting a gasoline-electric vehicle for maximum driving engagement. Fuel efficiency is what counts here and this Camry does not disappoint. In entry-level LE guise, expect an estimated 51 miles per gallon in the city, 53 mpg on highway trips and 52 mpg combined. SE, XLE and XSE hybrid models are slightly less efficient. They're rated at 44/47/46 mpg, respectively.

The current Toyota Camry is a fine midsize sedan. Refreshed looks and additional tech for 2021 should help this family-friendly four-door maintain its sales leadership. Production is slated to begin in October and examples should start arriving at dealers shortly after that. Pricing has not been announced yet, but it will likely be very similar to the 2020 model, which starts around 25 grand and change, including destination fees.

Adaptive Cruise Control In Stop and Go Traffic

  • Add to quote

I drove a loaner and liked that the adaptive cruise control works down to a full stop instead of disengaging below 25 mph like older models. However, I was still disappointed with it in full stop traffic. It leaves too large of a gap between you and the car ahead even when you select the shortest following distance. I understand the need for the gap when driving to allow for extra time for the vehicle to react if the car ahead suddenly slows or stops, but if the cars are already stopped, it would be nice if it was smart enough to close that gap to where a human driver would stop behind a fully stopped vehicle. A car that’s already stopped can’t suddenly stop more. No need for a car length or more gap any more at that point. I tried manually creeping forward with light pedal pressure and then gently easing off the pedal to stop, but the car still jerks to a stop due to AEB slamming on the brakes even a 2 mph speeds while still a few feet away from the bumper of the car ahead. To make driving in gridlock traffic better, Toyota should either reduce the gap behind stopped vehicles or at least be less aggressive with hard automatic braking when the car is moving below 5 mph. Does anyone know if other vehicles either other Toyotas or other brands like Tesla are better a managing the gap behind vehicles in very slow and fully stopped traffic?

comma.ai — make driving chill

I wouldn’t want a $1000 device stuck on my windshield. I’m pretty sure it would be illegal to mount there in California since you can’t even mount a phone in that location in California. Looks like both a dangerous projectile in a collision and a theft magnet.

Taxi's and other riding services will get you the perfect gap without any input from you at all.

toyota camry cruise control 2021

Just got a 2021 Camry LE hybrid and was annoyed that the radar-assisted cruise control waited far too long to start slowing for a stopped car and then stopped abruptly. I explored the menus on the steering wheel and found the "DRCC Curve Control" setting under the Gear icon . I changed that setting from Strong (two bars) to Weak (one bar). (If you choose "Off" DRCC won't stop the car at all!) Coupled with setting the Pre-Collision System's Vehicle-to-Vehicle Distance to three bars (accessed via the button next to the cruise control with a picture of radar waves coming off the front of the car), it now stops gracefully.

+1 for OpenPilot on a Corolla 2020. Drove 500km without touching the wheel except to change lanes/exit on the highway. Much smoother than stock. Like 2 seconds to disconnect and put in the glove box when parking

toyota camry cruise control 2021

I only use adaptive cruise control on highway and freeway or maybe in 80km zone open road. I have never used it in normal suburban traffic with too many traffic lights. I don't like the idea of self-drive cars, I like to have the control of my car when I am on the road.

I have never used any cruise control in my cars, like GTI or HB now.

toyota camry cruise control 2021

I agree with takemorepills. The startup from stopped position is what bothers me about this feature. I never use it in city driving.

toyota camry cruise control 2021

It’s always worked that way. It doesn’t brake for stationary objects because it would be triggered by things like trees, shadows, bridge overpasses and guard rails around bends and you would get phantom emergency braking. It only responds to things that are moving.

We keep having terrifying experiences with ours. Specifically, if traffic is coming to a stop, the ACC slows down appropriately when following the car behind us as we approach stopped traffic, however, if the car in front of us moves over to a left turn pocket, the ACC will accelerate into the stopping/stopped car that was in front of the car that just moved left, I swear if I let it, the car would rear-end someone. We noticed a cool feature the other day, my son and I were jamming out to some music, when some emergency vehicles approached us with their flashing lights, the stereo automatically lowered the volume. Pretty cool.

The only time I use ACC is on the open highway. Thinking about it, .... does anybody know if it would stop for red lights? Or would it just goes straight thru if there is no car in front, red or green?

Currently, no system will take that responsibility. However, Teslas and the new Civic can determine traffic signal states, but they won't respond to them. All systems at this time would run a red signal if there was no vehicle at the stop bar.

How does a 2020 Toyota Camry turn on cruise control?

Turn on the cruise control setting by pressing the button in the center of the circle on the right side of the steering wheel. Push set, the button along the bottom of the ring, when you are moving at the desired speed. Use the button on the top of the ring to change the speed.

What about the 2020 Toyota Camry’s cruise control?

For 2020, 4-cylinder versions in LE trim and higher are available with all-wheel drive. The Camry is also available as a hybrid. Toyota Safety Sense, which incorporates automatic high beams, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with pedestrian recognition, is a standard feature on every Camry.

Engine Option Availability

The engine choices are what differentiate the majority of the 2020 Toyota Camry grades. Only two trims have the option, and the XSE trim level is one of them. The model’s 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is a standard feature. This choice has adequate power and performance and is expected to deliver 33 Combined MPG. The 2020 Toyota Camry XSE’s V6 engine choice is the priciest of all trims, but it offers a potent 302 horsepower and 267 horsepower. AWD is now an option for the base 2.5L 4-Cylinder engine, but not for the V6 engine type.

Available Features in the 2020 Toyota Camry XSE

In comparison to lower trim levels, the 2020 Toyota Camry XSE comes standard with a number of goodies. The Audio Plus package, which also includes Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM, places an 8-inch touchscreen display at the center of the car. In addition, the model offers additional outward and internal features, such as:

  • Moonroof (in V6 engine option)
  • Front grille in gloss black with a sport mesh insert
  • Paddle-Shifting 3-Spoke Steering
  • 19-inch black wheels with a machined finish
  • Leather Furniture
  • Front Seats With Heat

All 2020 Camrys have remote start, right?

Along with Push Button Start, a remote keyless entry system, and remote lighted entry, the 2020 Camry Hybrid LE also includes the Smart Key System on the front doors and trunk.

How does the cruise control icon appear?

The controls needed to operate it are often located on the steering wheel or one of the car’s indicator stalks.

You’ll frequently need to depress a button labelled with the cruise control icon, which is a speedometer symbol with an arrow pointing in a specific direction (seen on the stalk below).

The following buttons are typically used to activate cruise control:

Cancel Instead of the off switch, there should be a button that just pauses the system, in case you get stopped behind a slower vehicle. The similar effect is produced by pressing the brake pedal.

Resume or Res After pausing the cruise control, press here to resume it. The vehicle will resume moving at the predetermined pace.

Up and Down, plus and minus These change the preset speed of the cruise control. You can hit the minus button to slow down, for instance, if you’re on a highway and come to a set of roadworks with a lower speed restriction.

Using the brake pedal will immediately pause the system and cause the car to slow down just as if the system were turned off, allowing you to override cruise control whenever necessary. The speed of the car will rise if the accelerator is pressed. The cruise control typically stays on when you release the gas pedal and brings the vehicle back to its predetermined pace.

How does the adaptive cruise control in Toyota operate?

The Toyota automobiles’ adaptive cruise control operates by spotting other cars in its lane. Depending on how close you are to other vehicles, it might both speed up and slow down your car. If necessary, it can even automatically apply the brakes.

You must push the On/Off button to turn on the ACC. The stalk must then be turned on by accelerating to the desired speed. Press the stalk and keep it down to set the ACC to that speed; after that, you can let go of it. You can use the On/Off Button once more to turn off the ACC.

How do you utilize the dynamic Toyota cruise control?

Simply press the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control button for around two seconds to enter standard cruise control. The indicator light will flash to let you know this has happened. Your Toyota vehicle will automatically return to Dynamic Radar Cruise Control once you turn it off.

Does Toyota offer stop-and-go navigation?

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which features full speed dynamic range cruise control and enables a complete stop, comes standard on all 2022 models. It is questionable how well it will perform in gridlocked traffic because if it completely stops, you must hit the resume button or tap the accelerator.

Is there adaptive cruise control on the Toyota Camry?

It’s hardly surprising that the Camry has managed to change into the car it is now given that it has withstood the test of time. The adaptive cruise control technology, commonly known as Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), is one of the most recent upgrades to the Camry. Toyota developed DRCC to handle cruise control on congested roadways. This reflects the culmination of years of work by the Toyota research and development teams and represents a significant shift in the paradigm of cruise control systems. The Toyota Pre Collision System and Brake Assist may be smoothly integrated with the DRCC to produce a significantly safer vehicle. Let’s examine the DRCC’s operation.

Mechanical Details of the DRCC

With cruise control on, the car will automatically maintain its current pace while reliant on your input for modest steering and braking adjustments, allowing you to take a break on any stretch of road. The DRCC goes a step further by employing active vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to instantly apply the brakes whenever a different automobile moves into the lane in front of you. The car uses radar technology to measure the speed of the car in front of you and then automatically adjusts its own speed to keep the predetermined following distance. It’s similar to letting your car drive itself.

Can cruise control reduce fuel use?

Yes, generally speaking. Due to its capacity to maintain a constant pace, cruise control can help you become more fuel-efficient and can help you save on gas on average by 714%. In contrast, the constant acceleration and deceleration caused by the driver’s foot on the pedals might use up more gas.

The Toyota Camry’s adaptive cruise control is it available in 2021?

Pre-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, automated emergency braking, emergency steering assistance, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering aid, road-sign assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights are all included in TSS 2.5+.

On a Toyota Camry, where is the cruise control sensor located?

Your car will automatically return to the dynamic radar cruise control setting once the engine is shut off. The right side interior panel of the trunk conceals the 2018 Toyota Camry parking sensor module.

How do I deactivate the adaptive cruise control?

You can disable Adaptive Cruise Control by doing any of the following:

  • Step on the brakes.
  • Select CANCEL from the menu.
  • Press the ON/OFF button for the cruise control.

A decent car is the 2020 Camry?

The Toyota Camry for 2020: How Reliable Is It? The anticipated reliability rating for the 2020 Toyota Camry is 82 out of 100. A predicted reliability score from J.D. Power of 91 to 100 is regarded as the best, 81 to 90 as great, 70 to 80 as medium, and 0-69 as fair and below average.

Camry SE or XLE: Which is superior?

The sporty enhancements on the Camry SE are also on the Camry XLE. It switches back to a comfort-tuned suspension, enabling it to offer a more comfortable ride than the camry SE. Despite having a similar exterior to the Camry LE, the Camry XLE may be distinguished thanks to a separate set of 17-inch alloy wheels. The Camry XLE also has upgraded LED headlights with fully integrated LED daytime running lights. The vehicle has premium taillights that further its appeal.

Although the Camry XLE ships with a four-cylinder engine as standard, you can choose a more powerful V6 engine. It generates 267 pound-feet of torque and 303 horsepower, giving the car a lot stronger kick. Fuel efficiency does, however, decrease to an EPA-rated 22 mpg in traffic and 33 mpg on open roads.

The Camry XLE distinguishes itself from other versions on the inside. The interior is further enhanced by genuine leather upholstery. A dual-zone automatic climate control system is also included. Your front passenger will appreciate a power-adjustable seat in addition to heated front seats. A larger 8.0-inch touchscreen has taken the place of the Camry’s conventional 7.0-inch touchscreen. Other improvements include blind-spot monitoring, two extra USB connections, and wireless device charging.

The Camry XLE comes in a variety of configurations. The nine-speaker JBL audio system will draw music lovers’ attention. It can create a soundscape that is especially potent thanks to an amplifier. An integrated navigation system is included with the enhanced sound system. A top-down camera, meanwhile, makes parking less difficult. Toyota also sells the Camry XLE with a panoramic glass sunroof and a color head-up display.

The Camry XLE benefits from a standard Toyota Safety Sense package, just as the rest of the lineup. However, rear automatic braking is an option. When backing up, this function will assist you in avoiding danger.

The 2025 Toyota Camry SE sprinkles sporty affordability over new all-hybrid lineup

  • Excellent value
  • Handsome design
  • Short on headroom
  • Stressed under hard acceleration
  • Small cupholders

Sedans might not be the hottest items in the automotive space right now, but when the best-selling midsize four-door gets a complete makeover and goes hybrid-only, it says a lot about the company making the vehicle and its future buyers. The 2025 Toyota Camry ditches its predecessor’s four- and six-cylinder engines and is only offered with a hybrid powertrain that delivers better power (and way better fuel economy) than the old entry-level engine, for not much more money than what competitors charge for their non-hybrid models.

Besides becoming a hybrid-only vehicle, the Camry also receives a full redesign , taking lines from the handsome (and 2024 MotorTrend Car of the Year-winning) Prius . While our Camry’s Underground Dark Gray color didn’t shine as brightly as other available colors, it’s easy to spot the various styling changes and Toyota’s new design language that’s more upscale and premium.

2025 Honda Odyssey: Everything we know about the next minivan

The Camry is known for its comfort, spaciousness and efficiency, and the 2025 model improves on every single area. We’re happy to report that the updated car is a nice step up over the outgoing model, achieving better fuel economy, adding more space and improving ride quality, and it still delivers tremendous value, with pricing starting at $29,495 for the more reserved-looking LE model.

Take the family with you

Though crossovers have been the family vehicle of choice lately, the Camry has plenty of space for five people. One of the things that we’re most impressed with is legroom for the second row; there is plenty for adults even with three people in the back. Headroom is a different story. Anyone around 6-foot-3 or below shouldn’t have any issues, but that’s without a sunroof. As we discussed in our Camry XLE AWD review, the sunroof eats a surprisingly noticeable 0.8 inch of headroom, which can be bothersome for taller folks.

The midgrade SE model gets sportier styling and wheels than the basic LE, along with well-padded leatherette (faux leather) seats that don't get too hot after sitting under the sun all day. The leatherette feels closer to what we’re used to seeing in a premium car rather than a midgrade Camry, but that touch of luxury is offset by the somewhat cheap-looking gray cloth inserts on the door panels and dashboard.

Our test car came with the $735 multimedia upgrade package, which includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is a nice step up over the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen. A 7.0-inch screen takes over most of the driver’s instrument cluster and is a good improvement over the outgoing model’s smaller and more dated-looking digital readout. We are also fans of the trim around the infotainment screen, which makes the dashboard look longer and wider.

Overall, the Camry is great in the comfort and convenience department, though one thing we wish it had was wider cupholders, as the ones in the center console don’t fit a 32-ounce water bottle, and the door panels don’t have space for one either.

Driving the Camry

All Camrys share the same hybrid powertrain regardless of the trim level. For now, there are no plans to bring a Prime (plug-in hybrid) version like that offered on the RAV4 and Prius, but with more power than before, only those who have a previous-generation V-6 Camry already in the garage will want more power out of the new generation.

The 2025 Camry is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a permanent-magnet electric motor and a starter/generator that deliver 225 hp combined. This output is mixed in a planetary-type continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and delivered to the Camry’s front tires; all-wheel-drive variants like the one we recently tested add another electric motor to the rear axle and make 232 hp combined.

Even the front-drive combination delivers plenty of power to the front wheels, making the Camry feel peppy around town, but at full-throttle it can feel stressed-out. The CVT does a decent job metering power in a linear way, and in conjunction with the engine’s rising revs manages to deliver a natural feel. The 225 ponies show up at the track, too; the 2025 Camry SE gets to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds, an improvement of 0.8-second over a last-generation Camry Hybrid SE we tested. The AWD 2025 Camry is just a hair quicker, reaching 60 mph in 6.9 seconds.

It takes some time to get used to the Toyota’s brake pedal, as the ABS system gets choppy when slowing down from high speeds. The brakes’ initial bite can be a bit too intense for city driving, too, but we grew used to it after a day or two behind the wheel. Stopping distances are just fine, with the Camry SE slowing from 60 mph in 125 feet — a curious 9 feet longer than the heavier all-wheel-drive Camry XLE we recently tested.

The Camry SE (and better-equipped XSE) are differentiated from the more comfort-focused LE and XLE trims by sport-tuned springs and dampers and larger-diameter anti-roll bars for sharper handling and responses. Road test editor Chris Walton finds the Camry “sporty” and “impressive” on the skidpad, though on the figure eight lap test it’s no quicker than the old model, completing the run in 27.0 seconds at an average of 0.62 g, slightly slower than the 2023 Camry SE’s 26.7 seconds at 0.65.

Toyota FJ Cruiser pickup: This is the FJ truck that Toyota should have built

While the Camry SE has a more dynamic feel than the LE or XLE models, it’s still comfortable to drive every day, as you’d expect a Camry to be. Toyota made this model snazzier to behold, but it’s still serene and pleasant to drive on the road.

Why the Camry SE is the best value for your money

With a starting price of $31,795, the 2025 Camry SE costs $2,300 more than the Camry LE yet still delivers a ton of value . With its standard hybrid powertrain returning 48 mpg city, 47 mpg highway and 47 mpg combined, it’s efficient, but that’s not all. Comforts and conveniences such as standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging and dual-zone climate control are shared with lesser LEs, but the SE adds those faux leather seats (power-adjustable driver’s perch), stylish 18-inch wheels and sportier body addenda, and that sport suspension for a sharper appearance and handling.

Looking at the hybridized midsize sedan competition, the 2024 Honda Accord Hybrid starts at $33,990 (though cheaper versions with gas-only power are available), while the 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (again, nonhybrid Sonatas are cheaper) starts at $31,915. The Camry is alone in going all-hybrid, of course, and we’ll need to toss it into a proper comparison test with its rivals to see whether that bold choice pays off. For now, the Camry SE is actually enjoyable to drive and look at (a mold first broken by the previous Camry) and just so happens to be a satisfyingly powerful yet fuel-sipping hybrid, too. If you’d like that combination to be affordable, the SE is the way to go. Have more money to swing around? The XSE and XLE deliver similar goods with more equipment.
