Dr. Wayne Barnes on traveling the world at 89

By Lauren Pope

Dr. Wayne Barnes was the lead pastor at First Baptist Zachary for 39 years and founded Zachary Travel and Cruise in 1983. He has led over 50 tours of the Holy Land and has traveled to over 100 countries and all seven continents. We talked to him about travel, faith, and the remarkable fact that even though he’s visited hospitals, probably more than anyone who isn’t a medical professional, he has never once been a patient in one himself.

zachary travel 2023 tours

Now 89 years old, Dr. Barnes continues to travel on group tours with Zachary Travel , though he no longer spends 200 days a year on the road. When he’s not traveling, Dr. Barnes says he and his wife Joyce like to start their Sundays at First Baptist Church, of course.

“We also go out to eat after church every Sunday at one of the places here in town. We do the EZ Buffet, Jett’s, Lagniappe, or South Plains mostly.”

He also spends time at the ball field watching his grandkids play.

He’s watched the Zachary community grow exponentially, both in population and diversity, since his arrival in 1962. But the most shocking thing to him about the past few decades is that he’s been blessed with excellent health. Despite spending so much time ministering to people in hospitals, he’s never been hospitalized himself, never fallen ill with anything worse than a virus, and never needed surgery.

Dr. Barnes gets his energy not from caffeine (“I don’t drink coffee, never have”), but by staying active and by walking a lot.   “I outwalk just about everyone who comes on my tours with me! I also have a dog named Blue who wakes up early and wants to be walked, so he makes sure I stay busy. That’s the main thing, just stay busy,” he says.

Best 6-day Tanzania safari package for 2023, 2024 and 2025 from Arusha

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha

Locations Covered

nature, safari, Wildlife

Description

Sign up for a 6-day Tanzania safari that offers a well-rounded experience, allowing you to explore distinct ecosystems and encounter a diverse range of wildlife. Explore the stunning Ngorongoro Crater and spot huge elephants and baobabs in Tarangire and tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara, as well as the Big Five Serengeti National Park. This park also witnesses the awe-inspiring Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing.

Day 1: Arusha - Tarangire National Park

  • Meet your safari guide in the morning, hit the road in your 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser, and drive to the Tarangire National Park. An extensive open Savannah, baobab trees, seasonal swamps, and the life-giving Tarangire River characterize the landscape of this beautiful national park. Animals gather at the river, as elephants, giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests can often be seen.
  • Spot the fringe-eared oryx or the weird-looking renege. Tarangire is also home to buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeests, always closely followed by predators, including lions. Your safari vehicle has an open roof and is the ideal viewing platform to appreciate the nature and animals around you.
  • Leave the park and travel to the Mto wa Mbu, where you will spend the night. Overnight at camp/lodge.

Lunch; Dinner

Day 2: Mto wa Mbu - Serengeti National Park

  • Today's journey takes you past Lake Manyara into the fertile Ngorongoro highlands. Crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will reach the vast open plains of the Serengeti National Park in the early afternoon.
  • Explore the famous Serengeti, home to the Big Five elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, rhino, and many other animals. You can look forward to many new wildlife sightings and beautiful sceneries during your game drives, as no day on safari is the same.
  • Spend the following three nights at the camp/lodge. Depending on the season, you can either stay one night in the central Serengeti and two nights in the northern Serengeti (June, October) or the southern Serengeti (January and March), or you can stay all three nights in the central Serengeti (November and December & April and May).

Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner; Overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 3 - Day 4: Serengeti National Park

  • Learn about animal behaviour as well as their social structures. The Serengeti National Park is the third largest park in Tanzania and is stunningly beautiful. While the landscape in the south is characterized by open grassland as far as you can see, open woodlands and hills are predominant in the north and west.
  • Explore the Serengeti, host to the Great Migration of millions of wildebeest and zebras, one of the greatest shows on earth. Your home is one of the Kati Kati Tented Camps. To increase your chances of witnessing the Great Migration, we choose your route and the order of camps according to your travel time.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. Overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 5: Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Conservation Area

  • Continue your safari in the Serengeti National Park. In the Seronera Valley, you might be lucky to see predators hunt as animals gather in the waters during the dry season.
  • Drive in the direction of the amazing Ngorongoro Crater. As soon as you have reached the crater, you will have a superb caldera view. This approximate 20 km wide crater is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to over 20,000 animals.
  • Stay at the camp/lodge Ngorongoro on the crater rim, from where you will be able to enjoy an incredible sunset.

Overnight at lodge or camp. Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater - Arusha

  • Drive down the steep path into the crater. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest, unbroken, and unflooded caldera in the world, and it has an unbelievable diversity of wildlife.
  • Spot the rare black rhino and other members of the Big Five. The crater is also home to other animals such as hyenas, waterbucks, bushbucks, eland, and more than 500 bird species.
  • Leave the caldera in the afternoon and drive back to Arusha Town to your accommodation.

Elton John is focused on his family.

In an Entertainment Tonight interview published on June 27, the iconic singer, 77, revealed that he would no longer be touring as he wants to “be present” for a crucial decade of his sons’ lives.

The icon, who shares sons Zachary Jackson, 13, and Elijah Joseph, 11 , with husband David Furnish , 61, wrapped up his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Stockholm, Sweden in July 2023. At the time, he told the crowd it had been "52 years of pure joy."

However, when asked if he’d go back on tour, John replied, "No."

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Furnish then added, “We've got our sons, you know, they're getting into their teenage years now.”

"We don't want to miss anything. We want to be present for that. It's sort of a key decade, I think, in a child's life,” he continued. “He's been doing it for 60 years. So it's nice to have that time to spend at home with family."

The "Tiny Dancer" singer's final world tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road , began on Sept. 10, 2018 in North America before finishing on July 8, 2023 in Sweden.

"And off he goes…. 🚀 One final trip down the Yellow Brick Road 💫 330 shows under his belt 💪🏼🎹 Finally off the road and into the sunset 🌈☀️," Furnish captioned the video.

"So excited for the next chapter together 👨‍👨‍👦‍👦 We love you Daddy ❤️."

Meanwhile, in January, the couple celebrated the 11th birthday of their youngest son Elijah .

Sharing a photo of a white birthday cake decorated with stars, candles, sprinkles and a "Happy Birthday Elijah" message written in red across the top, John and Furnish penned a sweet message to their son on Instagram .

"Happy Birthday to our beautiful son Elijah. Can’t believe you’re 11!" the joint post read. "You fill our hearts with so much love and laughter. We love you. Papa and Daddy xo."

So long, London.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift left her third and final Eras Tour show in London hand in hand, as seen in a fan video .

The Kansas City Chiefs player, 34, was spotted waiting for the pop star in an all-white outfit and a bucket hat as she chatted with someone on Sunday.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

After wrapping up her conversation, Swift stepped into frame in a pink dress and heels, reaching for her partner’s hand as they walked down a ramp.

“THEY ARE DRESSED NICE WHERE ARE THEY GOING?!” one X user asked.

Another gushed , “going on a date after a 3+ hour show?! and they say love is dead.”

Taylor Swift

Swift, also 34, kicked off her England performances on Friday and rolled right into another show on Saturday.

Kelce was spotted at Wembley Stadium for all three concerts, even making a surprise onstage appearance for the final show.

He joined two of her backup dancers during the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” transition, fanning himself during the songwriter’s subsequent wardrobe change.

Swift will have a few days off before hitting the stage in Dublin next week.

Kelce, who is in his NFL offseason, last attended one of his girlfriend’s shows in Paris in May, making headlines for dancing with Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid .

The athlete remained abroad for a Lake Como getaway with Swift.

The couple stayed in a luxurious private villa , which cost $21,000 per night, and he filmed his and brother Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast from somewhere “in Europe.”

Travis Kelce, Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper

The tight end gushed about Swift’s “unbelievable” skills while urging listeners to catch her upcoming tour stops.

“It has her new ‘Tortured Poets Department,’ a handful of those songs in the new show, which means  there’s a new segment , new lights, new dancing and everything,” Travis said at the time. “I enjoyed every bit of it.”

The three-time Super Bowl winner hadn’t met Swift when he first attended an Eras Tour show in Missouri in July 2023 — although he did try to give her his phone number on a friendship bracelet.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce

While he was “disappointed” Swift didn’t talk to him at the time, news broke two months later that the duo were dating .

When the “Catching Kelce” alum next attended one of her shows in Buenos Aires in November 2023, the couple were caught on camera embracing and kissing .

He has since watched Swift perform in Singapore and Sydney, showing PDA both times.

Augusta

When Augusta, Missouri, was recognized in 1980 by the federal government as an official AVA (American Viticultural Area), it earned its spot as the first in the United States (even before the California heavyweights). Still influential on a national stage, this Midwestern spot is treasured for its small-town charm and appealing selection of crowd-pleasing wineries with roots dating back to early German settlers.

Crest of the Blue Ridge

North Carolina

Henderson County is the home of North Carolina’s newest AVA (American Viticultural Area), Crest of the Blue Ridge. With distinctive soil and elevation and high water quality — plus warm days and cool mountain nights — grape production varies from European grapes and French-American hybrid grapes to grapes native to North Carolina. This area was named an AVA in the summer of 2019.

Dahlonega Plateau

Dahlonega, known as the “heart of Georgia's wine country,” is located in the foothills of North Georgia and provides wine enthusiasts of all levels with both breathtaking mountain views and award-winning wines. The area is home to 12 wine tasting rooms and eight wineries, with over 100 acres annually producing a selection of different European and American wine grapes.

Finger Lakes

New York’s picturesque Finger Lakes region is home to three distinct American Viticultural Areas: Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake. Visitors to the area will find more than 130 wineries, with many specializing in riesling.

Grand Valley

With over two dozen wineries/vineyards calling Grand Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) home, Colorado's wine country contains more than 25% of the state's wineries. Growing grapes in this terrain isn't the easiest task, which makes for creative solutions and unique yields.

Lodi

Lodi holds more than its share of California wine growing history, and these days it punches over its weight for quality and hospitality too. With a progressive approach to land stewardship, community, and social responsibility, plus more than 100 cultivated grape varieties and seven sub-appellations, Lodi is a hotbed for diversity, rigor, and excellence. Napa Valley

California's Napa Valley is synonymous with excellence in the wine industry. Its globally recognized vineyards benefit from the region's Mediterranean climate, leading to the creation of some of the most sought-after wines in the world. Napa Valley's fabulous hospitality scene underscores its status as a leader in the global wine market.

Paso Robles

For gorgeous views, intricate diversity and five-star hospitality on California's Central Coast, it's all about Paso Robles. This region offers everything from small batch tasting in the vineyard with tiny family wineries to some of the most breathtaking vistas with the capacity to welcome a crowd. Plus, there's a grape for every style preference growing in Paso Robles vineyards. In other words, no one leaves this place unsatisfied.

Rogue Valley

Rogue Valley, Oregon, with its diverse microclimates and elevation changes, allows for the cultivation of a wide range of grape varieties. This versatility results in the production of distinct wines, marking the region as a versatile player in the North American wine scene. Fans love to visit this part of the Pacific Northwest, where outdoor activities add to the appeal of the wine region.

Santa Barbara County

Santa Barbara County

Santa Barbara County benefits from the cool, maritime influences of the Pacific Ocean, which create an extended growing season. This allows for the development of grapes with deep flavors and balanced acidity, particularly for pinot noir and chardonnay. Santa Barbara's natural beauty and cultural appeal make this one of California's most interesting wine regions.

Snake River Valley

Idaho and Oregon

Snake River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area) features unique boundaries that cross into both Oregon and Idaho. Many wine lovers are delighted to learn that the bulk of these establishments can be found in Idaho, which is fast losing its best-kept-secret status in favor of a reputation as a well-known and exciting wine destination. The high mountain desert environment offers guests familiar grapes that reflect this unique terroir, which can reach nearly 3,000 feet in elevation.

Sonoma Valley

Sonoma Valley

As one of the most important spots in North American winemaking history, Sonoma County is often touted as producing the best of the best bottles. Sonoma Valley AVA is a distinct segment of the larger region, uniquely noted for a range of soil conditions and particular rain and wind patterns, thanks to its location between the Sonoma Mountains to the west and the Mayacamas Mountains to the east.

Suisun Valley

Rustic Suisun Valley, California, is gaining recognition for its quality wines at more accessible price points. Its warm days and cool nights are ideal for growing a variety of grapes, leading to the production of robust, flavorful wines. Suisun Valley's charm and commitment to community positions it as a rising destination within the California wine scene.

One of Southern California's most exciting places to visit, Temecula Valley offers rural, agricultural roots enhanced by some of the state's finest wine, food, and lodging offerings. With dozens of grape varieties, more than 40 wineries, stunning views, and bottles that often can be discovered only by visiting locally, there are plenty of reasons to make the trip.

The scenic Texas Hill Country surrounding the communities of Austin, Fredericksburg, Stonewall, Lampasas, and New Braunfels is home to more than 50 different wineries. This American Viticultural Area (AVA) is one of the largest in the country, growing varietals like tempranillo, viognier, and cabernet sauvignon, with an increasing acreage of warm-weather grapes being planted.

With over 100 wineries and tasting rooms scattered through distinct parts of the valley, visitors can keep busy while discovering new favorites.
