Bioluminescence is the emission of light by a living organism. When the organisms move in the water they create a beautiful glowing effect. This means that you can see fish underwater by the glow that they give off as they swim, your paddle will glow as you maneuver the waterways, and the natural flow of water will illuminate these organisms. We often see  dolphins, manatees, rays,  and so much more ignite the bioluminescence at night as well!

We’re the first clear kayaking bioluminescent company and proud of it! CHOOSING THE RIGHT NIGHT FOR A BIOLUMINESCENT TOUR:

When planning a bioluminescence kayak tour in Florida, take a look at the moon phase calendar. The visibility of bioluminescence can be impacted by the brightness of the moon, as a brighter moon may make it more challenging for viewing due to the moonlight’s reflection on the water surface. For optimal viewing and maximum brilliance of bioluminescence, it’s best to select a time when the sky is completely dark.

For the best viewing, typically you?ll want to find a night that is free from storms, with low wind speeds and warmer temperatures. We will do our best to communicate with you on any changes in weather on your scheduled tour night!

Choosing the right location is a key factor when trying to find best and brightest bioluminescence in Florida. This is why we launch from inside the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge just outside of Titusville, Florida. This location is one of the darkest places in all of Florida and is the absolute best location for viewing bioluminescence in Florida.

• There are only portable toilets on site – we recommend using the restroom before making it to the Refuge.
• Each of our kayaks are tandem, so bring a paddle partner! If you are solo or in an odd-numbered group you may take a boat by yourself.
• Safety is our priority. Each guest will be required to wear life jackets. We will provide a glow stick for additional safety.
• Please make sure you are aware of our weight limit policy and cancellation policy prior to booking.
• We cannot guarantee the brightness of the bioluminescence each night but our guides will bring you to the spots that are the brightest each night!
• Peak season is July & August – these tours typically book up weeks or months in advance so please plan ahead.

All Sales Final: Once booked, all sales are final, and no cancellations are permitted unless specified otherwise. Unsafe Weather: In the event of unsafe weather, we offer the option to reschedule or provide a full refund.

Trip Protection (optional): Purchasing Trip Protection allows you to cancel or reschedule your tour at any time for any reason up to 12 hours prior to your schedule tour time. You will be reimbursed for the full amount of each ticket, less of the cost of the trip protection and booking fees. This policy does not apply to bookings made less than 12 hours in advance. If you do not have Trip Protection, then all sales are final.

No paddler can be over 250 pounds individually due to manufacturers restrictions with the clear kayaks. Once that first criteria is met, no 2 combined paddlers can be over 425 pounds.

During the warm summer months, the waters of Florida’s Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon come alive with single-celled microorganisms called dinoflagellates. Every movement in the water produces a sold-light called bioluminescence! From the swirl of your paddle or the trail of a speeding school of mullet (which look like hundreds of blue-green underwater bottle rockets), to the ghostly glow of a slow-moving manatee or stingray, every movement is illumined. No need to travel to Puerto Rico to see this phenomenon. It’s right here in sunny Central Florida. You will be on the water for 90 minutes.

We plan to be on the water by your designated tour time. This window will save you from the new moon crowds, while still enjoying the absolute darkness of a “New Moon” night! ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Florida bioluminescence is the #1 kayaking trip in the Orlando, Cocoa Beach area. We are located about an hour from Universal Studios and The Walt Disney world area theme parks. Our “tourist tours or “visitor tours”, as the locals would call them, are ideal for a romantic evening on the water or an expedition in the name of science with the little ones (as long as they are over 5yrs of age). Our tour guides will guide you through the Indian River lagoon and show you something truly magical as we make our way through mangrove trails and the shallow flats of the lagoon.

This tandem kayak tour will spend a leisurely 90 mins on the water during this tour. You may want to leave the camera at home for this excursion, as the bioluminescence is very hard to photograph unless you have professional equipment.

Tours must be canceled  48 hours in advance  for a full refund. Cancellations less than 48 hours in advance will not be refunded.

About Florida Bioluminescent Kayaking

Florida Bioluminescence Kayaking is a bucket list entry for Eco-adventurers of all ages and all kayaking experience levels. This is an outdoor adventure eco-tour that will be limited in number as to provide an intimate outdoor experience. There is just no way to get close to wildlife with 60 tourists, in a group, on the water, (yeah let that mental image sink in lol).

Tour Launch Site

Our tours will launch on the Indian River Lagoon, which has been dubbed by the more senior outfits as “Florida’s Bioluminescence Bay”, in the belly of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge or Kiwanis Island on the Banana River in Merritt Island (Your confirmation follow up email will have a directional link provided for the launch site of your kayak tour).

See the Milky Way Galaxy

There is no light pollution on the Refuge, so the bioluminescence, as well as the MILKY-WAY GALAXY above, are extremely bright on moonless nights. Milky-Way season coinsides with our Bioluminescence season! What that means is that from March to October we (those of us in the northern hemisphere) are able to see into the center of the galaxy. Annnd what that means is that we are able to see the bands of our Milky-Way galaxy (which is shaped like a spiral or like a hurricane) over our heads at night, in stunning detail!

Dinoflagellate Bioluminescence

The dinoflagellate bioluminescence, when disturbed, is bright enough to light up a cove of trees Neon Blue from a distance, so visibility on a Sit On Top Kayak is not an issue.

When is the best time to see Bioluminescence

Our bioluminescence season opens officially on Memorial weekend! Technically the season lasts from June thru October, but we’ve seen sightings as late as January. The darker the evening the brighter the bioluminescence will be.

Why is the Florida Bioluminescence tour so talked about???

The water comes to life at night with a magical glow everywhere it is touched by your hand, paddle, kayak, a mullet jumping, fish swimming, or even the waves lapping gently. If scooped into your hand the water will sparkle as you hold it and as it runs down your arm. Many people compare this phenomenon with being in the movie Avatar. This phenomenon is made possible by naturally occurring dinoflagellate plankton that light up the water of the river. They can be observed in these waters May through October with sightings as late as January, but are brightest during the peak season of July through September.

No two adventures will be the same as nature is constantly on the move. No cheesy rehearsed scripts here just guides well versed in their environment.

Note: During the full moon phases bioluminescence does not appear as bright as when it is very dark
