COMMUNITY ~ The Kitchen Garden

tulbagh tourism

Opposite Daphne’s at the Tulbagh Kitchen Garden you can pick your own organically fruit and veg (great if you’re self-catering!) or order a hamper for delivery anywhere between Tulbagh and Muizenberg. The concept was inspired by the Babylonstoren and the Oranjezicht City Farm (they supply the too ). Located in a historical row of handsome Cape Dutch houses on Church Street, the gardens are open seven days a week and managed by a small team led by Jayson Augustyn-Clarke and dedicated greenies like Jim Soko, who confesses to being something of a plant whisperer. Various soup kitchens, as far afield as Woodstock, also receive donated produce weekly.

Understand [ edit ]

tulbagh tourism

Tulbagh is in the Witzenberg Municipal Area, near Wolseley, Prince Alfred's Hamlet, Gouda and Ceres, in the Winelands of Boland in the Western Cape Province.

Europeans arrived in 1658, and it was settled in 1700 when land grants were made to 14 farming families. The town was developed in 1743 when the church was built. After the earthquake in 1969 every home in Church Street was restored. These 32 buildings were all declared National Monuments and constitute the largest concentration of National Monuments in one street in South Africa.

The town is on the northern end of the beautiful and fertile Tulbagh valley. The valley is almost completely surrounded by majestic mountain ranges - the Obiqua mountains to the west, the towering Winterhoek on the northern end and the Witzenberg on the eastern side of the valley. The Great Winterhoek mountains tower 2077 m above sea level and are picturesquely snowcapped in winter.

tulbagh tourism

A diverse flora is abundant all over the valley and in the mountains. Proteas grow wild, as do herbs such as Buchu. The spring brings a multitude of wild flowers to full bloom and coupled to the blossoms of the fruit trees, it makes for a glorious show of splendor. The productive valley produces some of the country's best red and white wines, olive oil, peaches, grain, pears and 70% of the country's plums!

Towns such as Wellington, Malmesbury, Paarl, Franshoek, Riebeek Kasteel, Malmesbury, Piketberg, Porterville, Stellenbosch, Worcester and Rawsonville are within three quarters of an hour's drive from the valley and Cape Town is 120 km away.

14 Things To Do in Tulbagh

tulbagh tourism

Close your eyes and turn in a circle. When you slowly open them, what will you see? Green, gold and purple nearly all the way around…Tulbagh is a unique town, in the Western Cape, where bright shining mountains surround you in a near 360 “bowl”.

Snowy peaked in winter, shining purple in summer, the hum of this small, wine-producing town just 90 minutes North East of Cape Town, has Tulbagh earmarked as a much loved wine producing area, picturesque wedding venue and historical site holding the record for the most historical houses in one road, Church street.

While a 1960’s earthquake shook the town to its core, the stark white houses and thatched roofs of Church Street continues to encapsulate a glimpse of eighteenth-century South Africa.

Having visited Tulbagh on a number of occasions and struggling to get a greater sense of the town (businesses close early on a Saturday afternoon so arrive early to make the most of it), we started dissecting the local, printed map. Available for free from the tourism office, combined with a few tips from the locals, here’s our list of things to do in Tulbagh:

Things To Do in Tulbagh 2021

  • Olive Tasting at Oakhurst Olive Farm
  • Red Wine Tasting at Digger’s Home Estate
  • Krone MCC Tasting at Twee Jonge Gezellen
  • Saronsberg Art Gallery
  • Lunch at Duikers Drift
  • Shopping at MIT (Made in Tulbagh)

1. Olive Tasting at Oakhurst Olive Farm

Start the morning in one of the furthest locations to squeeze the most in. Set on a lush, green farm, set deep within the Tulbagh mountains, Oakhurst Olive farm is an award-winning, Proudly South African olive farm. The most frequent owners removed all the fruit trees, replaced them with olive trees and have never looked back!

The building is well air-conditioned with lots of seating, a grand piano (which is still used), friendly service and exquisite views of the mountain (there’s nothing higher up than Oakhurst). Enjoy an olive tasting for R30 per person.

We highly recommend their olive tapenade, which is vegan friendly, as it is made with capers, not anchovies. The olive marmalade (chilli or plain) are both also delicious and you would never imagine they are made with olives!

tulbagh tourism

2. Red Wine Tasting at Digger’s Home Estate

We visited Digger’s Home by pure chance. While chatting to a mutual friend in town, the owner invited us over for a quick tasting. The small estate lives up to its homely name with a porch tasting room, delicious home-made snacks and a wine tasting straight from the barrel! Visit Digger’s Home to talk all things red wine with passionate, local winemakers.

tulbagh tourism

3. MCC Tasting at Krone (Twee Jonge Gezellen)

Just 5km’s from Oakhurst (towards town), the Twee Jonge Gezellen wine estate is home to famous South African MCC: Krone . The 300-year-old farm creates MCC in the traditional method (methode cap classique) and offers beautiful, rooftop views across their vineyards.

The historic white buildings shine against the deep blue Tulbagh skies, and is a stark contrast against the vibrant green vineyards and rugged, purple mountains. Once upstairs in the tasting room, one might be attracted to the shade but the real fun is on the rooftop porch.

The estate is large and includes a gallery, with large lawn play areas for kids as well. The tasting room is NOT open on Sundays, but visit between 10am and 4pm from Monday to Saturday.

We recommend their Barrealis Vintage Cuvée Brut, which has a slightly less bitter edge than most South African bruts. “…true to 2019’s growing conditions, the acidity is firm and cleansing.”

tulbagh tourism

4. Art Gallery at Saronsberg Wine Cellar

The large sculptures present upon arrival at Saronsberg immediately gives the estate a feeling of interactivity. The wide, natural surroundings with lush lawn and shimmering dam welcome visitors to the well-known wine-producing farm.

Before indulging in a little wine tasting, visit the  Saronsberg art gallery . The duplex art gallery is the centre of the tasting room and displays floor to ceiling contemporary South African artwork in natural lighting. Find sculptures, paintings and prints from local artists as well as more information about their award-winning wines.

After exploring the powerful pieces, tuck into a Richard Bosman meat and cheese board while enjoying their wines. We recommend the viognier or shiraz.

tulbagh tourism

5. Lunch at Duikers Drift

Duikers’s Drift is a more recent find of ours, which was recommended to us by two individual locals on our most recent trip. The dog-friendly restaurant is very busy over weekends, with their outside breakfast braais, where a large fry up takes place on their outdoor fires.

Pull up a seat on the glass top palettes or sit inside for a cooler experience. Shop their little deli filled with sweet treats, baked good, home-cooked meals and crafts before heading home. The road to the venue is dirt and there are lots of wild animals on the way, so drive slowly to exercise caution.

6. Shopping Local Products at MIT (Made in Tulbagh)

MIT (Made in Tulbagh) is a store on Tulbagh main road that champions all things local. From quality leather bags, hand-crafted toys, preservatives, “create your own” spekboom forests, leather jackets, concrete pot plants, children’s clothes/bags/dolls made from recycled vintage fabrics and original vintage children’s annuals upcycled into new notebooks – MIT is a real display of local ingenuity and creativity.

Sourcing items from Tulbagh and the surrounding areas (Ceres, Wolseley, etc) the local store was created by former GQ magazine creative director, Arthur, in collaboration with friend Gail. Made in Tulbagh is worth a visit if you’re looking for superior gifts and good quality clothing items.

If you’re staying in self-catering accommodation, we recommend buying a few fresh veggies from the stoep (porch) pop-up stall that is often available on a Saturday. Alternatively, enjoy a quick, fresh lunch from their small in-house kitchen.

7. Get Your Free Town Map

Church street is actually a great place to start each visit in Tulbagh as it has the visitors centre right at the start of the road. Pop inside and get your FREE printed, paper map of the town. It illustrates all the routes and which roads are tarred or gravel.

8. Cruise Down Church Street

When entering Tulbagh via the main road, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Vos street “triangle island” on the left, which takes you directly into Church street ( Kerk straat ). The Old Church Museum on the left is a good landmark to look out for, with its large white gables and canons out front.

The famous street holds the South African record for the most historical buildings in one road, with some properties being over 200 years old. Some have plaques outside with further information, while others offer accommodation, gift shops or eateries. If you have time, park the car and take a peek into each house to see the treasures inside.

9. Beer Tasting at Paddagang Eatery & Brewery

Halfway down Church street is a dirt road entrance to Paddagang eatery and brewery. If you’re keen to taste local beers, drive down and around the back of the building to the parking on the right. Grab a beer and a bean bag and lounge outside on the lawn, in the afternoon sun, before the evening’s activities.

10. Dinner at the Tulbagh Hotel

As the foyer lights warm up the stone porch, the Tulbagh Hotel offers a warm welcome to visitors looking for an evening meal. Fairy lights twinkle in the tree as guests return to the hotel for the evening.

The restaurant is open to the general public and offers easy grazing: steaks, pizzas, salads with attentive service. We weren’t expecting much and were pleasantly surprised by both the food and service. Add it to your list of things to do if you want someone to take over the cooking for the night.

11. Spying on Animals at the Welbedacht Nature Reserve

We accidentally ended up the Welbedacht Nature Reserve thanks to Google Maps doing us a dirty. (The road between this side of town and Oakhurst no longer connects due to the road becoming too dangerous.)  Before ringing Oakhurst and trying to make our way there, we spotted a number of zebras, springbok and horses in an open field.

While we didn’t have time to stop in, they do list, “game viewing, nature trails, bird watching, swimming in the dam, exploring the labyrinth or a visit from our free-roaming horses” as some of the activities on their site. Definitely a location we’ll be returning to in the future!

12. Breakfast at Kole en Deeg

We noticed Tulbagh’s latest addition, Kole en Deeg, when driving down the main road in late 2020. While talking to some locals, the eatery came highly recommended so we decided to stop in for brunch on our way out of town.

With a mixture of modern colours and natural textures, we were immediately impressed by the baked goods in the glass display. Ordering bacon and cheese roosterkoek (grilled sandwich), a caramel frappa and chicken wrap with avo and salad, it’s hands-down our new favourite restaurant in town.

The prices are also out of this world and we highly recommend the Sweetie pie cupcakes, which cost just R25! We’ll definitely be back…

13. Have a Spa Treatment at Vindoux Spa

If you need some extra love over and above blowing off some steam wine tasting, then book yourself in at Vindoux day spa. Enjoy a full body massage, foot massage or some general pampering for “out of town” rates (like R250 for 30 minute back destress massage or Hot Stone full body massage for R450!), the perfect way to grab some “me” time while in the valley.

14. Wine Tasting at Montpellier

One of Tulbagh’s most loved venues, due to its 300-year-old heritage and charming chapel on the hill, Montpellier is known for its relaxed atmosphere and world-class wines. This is another venue that closes reasonably early, so be sure to visit earlier in the day in order to pop in for some of great South African wine.

15. Local Events

Before heading to Tulbagh for the weekend (if not for a wedding), take a look for some local events. There are bands that play from time to time as well as the Day at the Duck Race, where a ton of ducks are chucked into the local stream and “raced”. Held at local b&b Essere Lodge, grab your Wellies, bet on a duck and head down to Day at the Duck Races .

Tip: View Antelope at Vindoux

The Vindoux Estate has a viewing deck for visitors. They have springbok and zebras on their farm, which may be available for public viewing. Give them a ring and see if they’ll let you pop in for a visit.

Arts at Makers Mark – CLOSED

UPDATE: DECEMBER 2020: Unfortunately, Maker’s Mark did not manage to survive the tough times of 2020 and is officially closed. We wish them well in their future endeavors and extend condolences for the loss of such an art-centric venue.

In Closing…

We’ve really come to enjoy Tulbagh over the past 5 years as we visited more and more locations. The wine is world class and it’s always a good feeling to be out in the fresh air and warm sunshine.

It’s a relatively quiet town, compared to Franschhoek, for example, which is always bustling no matter the time or season.

So book for a quiet, relaxed weekend away in the countryside and enjoy the best Tulbagh has to offer. Enjoy!

8 Things To Do In Tulbagh

That aren't wine.

Tulbagh, the fourth oldest town in South Africa.

A secret valley, hidden away within the  Land van Waveren  Mountain Basin.

The most beautiful landscape and wine lands, surrounded by the Winterhoek, Witzenberg and Obiqua Mountains of the Western Cape.

Believe me, this little village is draped with some remarkable history, friendly hospitality, drool-worthy scenery, and some amazing wine estates. However, Tulbagh has a little something for everyone whether it be wine, a luxury escape, a family holiday, or an outdoor adventure!

The village of Tulbagh is just waiting to be explored.

Youtube travel guide, 8 things to do in tulbagh that aren't wine, 1. walk down the historic church street.

Go and take a long, slow walk along the historic Church Street.

Here you will find the largest number of Cape Dutch, Edwardian, and Victorian Heritage sites, all existing in one street in South Africa! (32 to be exact.)

Some dating back to over 300 years ago!

Why Church Street? Well, the town started to develop when the church was established in 1743.  De Oude Kerk is also one of the last surviving cruciform churches of the Dutch East India Company.

Did you know: Some of the buildings had to be restored. Do you know why?  (answer in the next paragraph)

tulbagh tourism

2. Explore Church Street's Museum Complex

Why were some of the buildings restored? Well, in 1969 Tulbagh suffered a massive earthquake!

To learn more you will have to take the tour! We found the tour so informative and interesting. We were pretty pressed for time on the day of our visit but could have walked around for an easy 3 hours, so make sure you put some time aside.

The museum complex consists of De Oude Kerk Volksmuseum , the Victorian House Museum,  the Christo Coetzee Art Museum , the  Cape Dutch Pioneers House,  and the  Earthquake Museum.

Did you know: T here were a few interesting facts that stood out to us during our visit, one of them being that people used to get buried under the church when they passed on. Not near the church in a cemetery, but literally under the floors of the church.

3. Visit Rescued Animals At Fynbos Guest Farm

Not a history buff? How about some animals? Why not visit The Fynbos Guest Farm and Animal Sanctuary , a haven for rescued and re-homed animals.

This farm began its journey with a man, a cappuccino, a motorbike, and the promise of the open road, but has now become a place of refuge, having rescued animals for over 13 years to date; from dogs to goats, pigs to emus, horses to springbucks, and even zebra.

What’s brilliant is that everyone on the farm lives in natural harmony with each other. The owners and animals are living the dream.

It’s a great activity for families. You can come and walk around the property, feed the animals, walk through the labyrinth and even visit their handmade glass meditation room.

Fynbos guest farm is completely self-funded and, unfortunately, abused animals never come cheap. So please feel free to donate to the cause so that we can maintain the homes of so many now-loved animals.

P.S. the male goats are cheeky and greedy! Make sure you keep some food for the donkeys around the back.

5. Do an Olive Tasting At Oakhurst Olives

When we heard one could come and do a tasting at Oakhurst Olives , we were intrigued, not only to taste their award-winning olives but to taste their extra virgin olive oil! (Who knew that was a thing?)

Well, what an awesome experience! We weren’t really olive people, but my word, we were full-on prepared to take home every product available in their store! Especially the chilli marmalade!

So be on the lookout for their olive & chilli marmalade and bring home a jar or two for us. That’s going to have to be a staple in our home from now on.

6. Attend Saturday on The Farm

Every Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, Oudekloof Wine Estate hosts “Saturday On The Farm” where you can come and hang out on the farm, listen to live music, purchase fresh farm foods (like breads, yay!), enjoy some pizza or even indulge in Grandma’s traditional Sunday lunch.

(You can also do wine tastings…but shhh, I’m not supposed to talk about wine in this article…but their wine is so cool! The wine names are hilarious! It’s a serious wine, made by not-so-serious people.)

7. Hike up The Oudekloof Pass

The Oudekloof Pass is one of the oldest and steepest passes In South Africa. In some places, it has an incredible ratio of 1:4. Back in the day, this is where the ox wagons would have come down the mountains and into the valley. If you look closely, you can actually see scratches left behind in the rocks made by the wheels from the ox wagons!

There are a few different hikes on the farm. We chose to hike up to see the old cannon (a steep walk! Bring some proper hiking shoes!) which took us about 3 hours.

The story of the old cannon…

They used to fire the cannon to let the farmers in the area know that the ships would soon be arriving at the harbour so that the farmers could make sure to be at the harbour in time to sell their produce. The cannon firing would begin on the coast and the signal would travel from cannon to cannon, alerting farmers along the way.

8. Go On A Tractor Ride

If you are not in the mood to walk up (for which I will not blame you, it’s steep!) take a scenic tractor ride instead! At Oudekloof Wine Estate they also offer tractor rides with a cool twist, the option to sit on the mountain and enjoy sunset with a glass of wine and a picnic.

This is a fun outing for the family, for friends or for you and someone special!

The Best Time To Visit Tulbagh

“A destination for all seasons and reasons”

Tulbagh can be beautiful in any season. Come in spring when the flowers start to bloom, or in summer when everything is green and the sun is shining. You can walk in nature, go on a hike, and drink wine amidst the abundant vineyards.

Autumn is the season that brings shades of amber, russet and gold to the area.

During winter you can cosy up with wine in hand and a blanket in tow near a wood-burning fire to watch the snow fall atop nearby mountains.

Let’s Simplify:

Summers   (December to February)  Warm weather.

Autumn   (March to May)  are warm in the daytime, while a little cooler in the evenings.

Winter (June to August)  have comparably high daytime temperatures for winters in the region. The evenings and mornings prove to be chilly. You could also be faced with one or two rainy days.

Spring (September to November)  The winters have passed and the  flower season  is in full swing!

Where To Stay

The Tulbagh Boutique Heritage Hotel.

We stayed in the Honeymoon suite, an old Cape Dutch home, rectangular in shape with whitewashed walls, a thatched roof and large dark green wooden-shuttered windows. The suite is also bordered by a most beautiful garden courtyard and is placed right on Church street, the most lovely setting.

How Do I Get To Tulbagh?

We will be honest and say that it is a lot more accessible from Cape Town than it is from Jo’burg as it is only a one and a half-hour’s drive from there.

However, it is worth a visit in any case and we highly recommend making it a part of your must-do  South African Road Trip .

Our Takeaways From Tulbagh

Blue historic house in Tulbagh, South Africa.

Tulbagh is full of charming, old buildings in Cape Dutch style. These are concentrated on the main street – Van der Stel Street, and the parallel Church Street. Walking a loop around these streets is just over one kilometre. You will also pass most of the restaurants and cafes on this short walk.

There are also several small museums in some of the historic buildings showing exhibitions about the history of Tulbagh Valley, the 1969 earthquake (see box below), the lifestyles of former inhabitants and the artwork of Christo Coetzee.

History of Tulbagh

Tulbagh is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, and certainly one of the best-preserved. The town started developing in the mid-18th century though Khoisan people lived here for thousands of years before that.

A mix of Dutch and Huguenot settlers built farms in the Tulbagh basin, surrounded on three sides by spectacular mountain ridges.

Today you can find beautifully preserved Cape Dutch and Victoria architecture as you wander around the little town centre and the main focus of the valley is tourism, wineries and agriculture.

Eating in Town

tulbagh tourism

We visited Waverley Hill Wines and Restaurant ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *), 20 minutes from Tulbagh, on the way back from Ceres. There are beautiful views, the food was tasty and the wine delicious. Maybe we were biased because it was the day the alcohol ban ended and we hadn’t had any real drink in a while!

We ate lunch at Kole and Deeg ( FB Page , Tripadvisor Reviews *) on the main street in central Tulbagh. They had super tasty pasteis de nata and other bakery goodies along with a menu of light meals.

There are many other restaurants and cafes in Tulbagh and at the wine farms in the surrounding region.

Accommodation near Tulbagh

Fraaigelegen Farm, South Africa.

We camped at Fraaigelegen Farm ( Website , Booking Reviews *) for one night, 15 minutes south of Tulbagh and near Waverley Hills Wine and Restaurant. The campsite was beautiful, with stunning views of the mountains, the ablutions facilities were spotless and there was WiFi near the main house. Apart from camping, cute little cottages are also available. There is a large dam near the cottages in which you can swim.

Cottage at Oude Compagnies Post near Tulbagh, South Africa.

We stayed for two nights in a very cute cottage at Oude Compagnies Post ( Website , Booking Reviews *), the start of a hike up Roodezandsberg Peak . The views from the cottage were gorgeous and the interior was beautifully designed. An elegant pool and a large braai area in front of the cottages made it just perfect.

There are many other great accommodation options in and around Tulbagh *.

Tulbagh Hiking Trails

Apart from a stroll around town, there are other lovely hikes on offer in this region.

1969 Tulbagh Earthquake

The magnitude 6.3 Tulbagh Earthquakes struck in 1969. It was one of the largest, most destructive earthquakes to occur in South Africa.

There was widespread damage to Tulbagh, Ceres and the surrounding regions. This area is part of the Cape Fold Belt that contains many faults and has built the many chains of steep mountains in the Western Cape. After the earthquake geologists hunted for any break in the surface that may indicate exactly where the fault that caused the earthquake was. They didn’t find anything, probably because the movement on the fault took place at a few kilometres’ depth and didn’t reach the surface.

There was a magnitude 5.7 aftershock about 6 months after the mainshock. Today the chance of another large earthquake is low though not zero.

The many damaged, historic buildings in town were meticulously restored which is why they are in such good condition today.

To find out more, visit the little earthquake museum ( Website , Tripadvisor Reviews *) which contains photos and descriptions of the fateful day.
