“Awesome trip, with some exciting views into the abyss. Being so close to the heart of active volcanoes is a pretty intimidating experience – nature is indeed rather fascinating! The trip was very well organised, there’s never a dull moment. Both volcanoes – Bromo and Ijen are different enough by their geology, so worth visiting both. The sunrise at Bromo is very pretty (just cold – dress warmly). Just be aware that the Ijen Crater tour down to the sulphur vent / blue flames really requires a good level of fitness, and appropriate shoes (no flip-flops, sneakers, etc.). But that is absolutely the highlight of the entire trip and shouldn’t be missed!” – Sebastian_V

“My wife and I have travelled extensively around the world, and we both thought Mr. Wawan was probably the best guide we’ve ever had on any tour. He was very attentive, allowed us to explore options of interest enroute, and went well beyond what one might have expected of his job. We both now consider him a friend rather than a guide. Beyond that, Mr. Andi was the overall tour operator who seemed to check in with Mr. Wawan on a regular basis to ensure all was well. Together, we felt well taken care of throughout the trip. The itinerary itself was well planned, with a mix of cultural and natural sites and points of interest. All hotels clean, adequate and located near daily attractions. The one near Ijen was actually surprisingly plush. Overall, we can recommend this tour without qualification. That said, if you can ask to have Mr. Wawan as your guide, his English was excellent, and you will be treated like a personal guest.” – Tripadvisor reviewer

Things to Know Before Visiting Mount Ijen

  • ❌ Mount Ijen is closed to visitors every 1st Friday of the month for religous ceremonies.
  • 🌜 Prepare for the Night Trek : The journey to see Ijen’s famous blue flames starts in the wee hours. Equip yourself with a headlamp (dont waste your phone torch bettary), wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes with some grip for the rocky path, and dress in layers—it can be chilly at night but warm up quickly by day.
  • ☢️ Safety First : The sulfuric gases at Ijen can be overwhelming, so wearing a gas mask is crucial for your safety. Don’t worry, though; gas masks are typically provided as part of the tour. Remember, safety isn’t just a guideline; it’s a necessity for this adventure.
  • 💪 Physical Readiness : The hike to the crater is moderately challenging, with steep and uneven paths. It’s a good idea to assess your fitness level before embarking on this trek. A little preparation goes a long way—consider some pre-trip hiking or stairs training to get in shape.
  • ⛏️ Respect the Miners : You’ll encounter sulfur miners during your visit, who undertake this strenuous work daily. It’s an eye-opening experience that adds depth to your adventure. Please show them respect, keep a safe distance, and ask before taking photos.
  • ☀️ Catch the Sunrise : While the blue flame is a star attraction, the sunrise over the turquoise crater lake is equally mesmerizing. Make sure to find a good spot to soak in the breathtaking views as the day breaks—it’s a moment you’ll want to capture both in your camera and your heart.
  • 🌿 Eco-Friendly Travel : Remember, we’re visitors in this stunning natural landscape. Keep it pristine by packing out any trash and minimizing your environmental footprint. It’s our responsibility to ensure that places like Ijen remain beautiful for generations to come.

Mount Ijen Tours FAQ

Ah, the magical blue fire of Mount Ijen! It’s like nature’s own light show, flickering in the darkness of the night. This mesmerizing phenomenon is caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases that, when they come into contact with air, ignite and produce flames up to 5 meters high. And guess what? Mount Ijen is one of the only places in the world where you can witness this natural wonder. It’s as if the mountain holds a piece of the night sky in its crater.

Great question! While you don’t need to be a runner, a certain level of fitness will definitely enhance your experience. The trek to the crater rim involves a hike of about 3 kilometers, with some steep and rocky sections. My advice? Take it at your own pace and remember, every step brings you closer to witnessing the incredible sunrise and blue flames. It could be challenging for some, but oh-so-rewarding. Plus, standing at the top with the world awakening below you? Priceless.

Packing smart is key to enjoying your Mount Ijen tour to the fullest! First off, a gas mask or a respirator is a must-have to protect yourself from the sulfur fumes (but this is usually provided by your tour). Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes with a bit of grip for the uneven terrain, and layer your clothing— it can be chilly before dawn but warms up quickly. Don’t forget a headlamp for the night hike – some people opt to use the torch on their phones, I hated wasting my battery unnecessarily. Definitely bring some water to stay hydrated, and snacks for energy if needed. Because I was so cold at the top before sunrise whilst watching the blue flames, Id maybe suggest a small travel size blanket too. Oh, and a camera obviously to capture those unforgettable moments!

Technically, yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Having a local guide not only supports the community but also enriches your journey with insider knowledge and fascinating stories you’d miss out on otherwise. Plus, navigating the path in the dark and staying safe near the crater are much easier with someone who knows the way. Trust me, the insights and peace of mind a guide provides are worth every penny.

Mount Ijen is majestic year-round, but for the clearest skies and the best chance to see the blue fire, dry season months from April to October are ideal. That said, there’s something incredibly special about experiencing Ijen in different seasons. Just remember, whenever you choose to visit, you’re in for an adventure that’ll stay with you forever.

Ready for an adventure that’s priceless but thankfully doesn’t break the bank? A day trip to Ijen Crater generally ranges from IDR 500 000 to IDR 1 000 000. This usually covers your transportation, a knowledgeable guide to lead the way, and entrance fees. It’s an investment in unforgettable memories and breathtaking views. The pricing will depend on whether its a private or shared tour, whats included and most certainly from which location your travelling from and being dropped off.

Oh, absolutely! Imagine standing at the edge of the world (or so it feels), gazing into the heart of the earth as blue flames dance beneath the stars. Then, watching as the sun rises, painting the sky in hues you thought only existed in paintings. It’s not just a tour; it’s an experience that etches itself into your soul. But don’t just take my word for it; many adventurers have hailed it as a bucket list-worthy journey!

Mount Ijen welcomes adventurers of all types, but it’s important to be mindful of its physical demands. The hike is moderately challenging, and the presence of sulfur gases means it might not be suitable for everyone, especially those with respiratory issues, severe asthma, those pregnant or young children. Always consult with tour providers and consider your own health and fitness when planning this adventure.

Indonesia’s Greatest Sulphur Mine: The Ultimate Guide to Climbing Ijen

' src=

The last time I joined an Ijen tour it was the early morning and I never got to see the blue flames. I was so glad that I had decided to make the trip a second time. Here’s a guide to the Ijen Volcano Tour so you can plan the trip for yourself. Let’s get started. Here’s a guide to the Ijen Volcano Tour so you can plan the trip for yourself. Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

There are two ways to get to Ijen crater. One route is from Banyuwangi, which is by the coast. The other route is from Bondowoso, which is in the highlands. You can find a quick review of the different options below. Based on my own experience I’d recommend staying in Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi to Ijen

Ijen is a one-hour drive from Banyuwangi. There are a lot of hotel options available in and around the town and several restaurants where you can get food. You can get trains to Banyuwangi from Surabaya and the ferry from Bali docks at the port in the town. There are also more company’s offering Ijen crater tours. For these reasons I found Banyuwangi is the most convenient place to stay.

Bondowoso to Ijen

Some tourists visiting Ijen choose to stay just outside of Bondowoso. Personally I do not recommend this option. The  city is further away from Ijen than Banyuwangi (it’s a 90-minute drive from Ijen). There aren’t as many hotels either. On the plus side it is a beautiful area. The highlands around Bondowoso are covered in tea plantations.

The Ijen Crater Tour

There are lots of company’s around Banyuwangi and Bondowoso offering tours to Ijen. The most popular tour is the Ijen Midnight tour, with pickup at 1 am and drop off some time after sunrise. Many company’s also offer sunset tours, which start around 3 pm with drop off back at the hotel at around 8 pm.

I’ve visited Ijen for sunrise, during the day and for sunset. Based on my experiences I’d recommend joining the Ijen Midnight Tour. On the Midnight Tour you’ll get to see the blue flames of Ijen, more about that later, sunrise over the crater and then finally the crater itself. The sunset tour is not as good (though you can still see the blue fire and you will get a good nights sleep).

Highlights of the Tour

Ijen is probably one of my favourite tourism destinations for first time visitors in Indonesia. The landscape is out of this world. One of the highlights of visiting Ijen is the blue flames, which you can only see at night. The flames appear at the base of Ijen crater and are caused by sulphuric gas catching fire. You can find an article about the flames in the National Geographic here .

One of the other things that brings people to Ijen is the landscape. The volcano is an active sulphur mine. The liquid sulphur comes out of the vents with the gas and spreads out over the floor of the crater turning everything around it yellow (and the crater lake a beautiful and unnatural turquoise). The effect is out of this world and makes for amazing photographs.

The miners that collect the sulphur have become another part of the tourist attraction. These miners lead a difficult life. They carry 70-90 kg or more of sulphur on their backs all the way from inside the volcano crater to the base. It’s an easy two hour walk. The miners get paid just Rp 1,000 a kilo. I tried to lift one of these baskets up and barely managed it. There’s a really interesting article about the sulphur miners of Ijen here .

Preparing For the Tour

The Ijen Crater Tour is hard. The tour takes about 6 hours from start to finish. You’ll be hiking for almost 4 hours uphill and downhill. It’s a lot of exercise and you’ll feel it in your calf muscles. Unless you are a very active person I would recommend doing some exercises leading up to hiking Ijen. You can find some other recommendations below.

Things to Remember

  • If you are coming from Bali to Ijen make sure to change the time on your watch before you go to sleep at your hotel. Java is one hour behind Bali time.
  • The smell of the sulphur gas in Ijen volcano is really strong. Make sure to bring a piece of cloth that you can wrap around your mouth for when you enter the crater.
  • Sounds obvious but bring a flashlight for the climb up Ijen volcano.
  • Make sure to bring some warm clothes, especially a windbreaker, as it’s cold on the top of Ijen.

Hiking Ijen

Before you even start to hike Ijen you need to buy a ticket. The ticket costs Rp 100,000 per person for a foreigner. It is Rp 150,000 on the weekend. The price for Indonesian’s is a lot less, something like Rp 15,000 per person. You should buy the ticket from the office at the entrance of the car park. You can see a photo of the office above.

The first part of the Ijen crater tour is the climb. There are two sections to the climb. The first part is the ascent. The path is not too steep, but it is a long climb. Once you get near the top of the volcano the path loops around the rim of Ijen crater. It takes between 1-2 hours to climb the volcano depending on how fit you are. You don’t really need a tour guide to climb Ijen. The path is easy to follow and there will be lots of other tourists climbing at the same time as you.

When you arrive at the top of Ijen volcano you will be met by locals who are renting gas masks. The gas masks are for the climb into the crater. Although they will tell you that you need to rent a mask to enter the crater you don’t. A piece of cloth around your mouth should be enough. If you have asthma or breathing difficulties I’d recommend renting a mask.

Entering Ijen Crater

From the top of Ijen crater you can see the crater lake and a flicker of light. It takes about 20 minutes to trek to the bottom of the crater. The path is steep and slippery. In many places it is just large enough for one person. If the wind is blowing in your direction plumes of sulphur will cross the path making it difficult to breath. It’s disorientating and it’s easy to get lost (I’d recommend going with a guide).

When you get to the bottom of the crater everything is calm. You don’t smell the sulphur, because the smoke all goes up in the air. This is the best bit of the Ijen Crater Tour. When I visited I spent about 2 hours sitting in the crater. It didn’t feel like a long time. It’s not cold in. The crater is sheltered from the wind. The view of the blue fire is really amazing and there are always lots of interesting people that you can meet and talk to.

If you don’t want to stay long in the crater you can leave your hotel around 2 am. This gives you enough time to see the blue flame and also watch the sunrise. It’s a popular option for a lot of tourists who join an Ijen crater tour. While you can do this, I recommend arriving earlier to avoid the crowds and get a good view.

Sunrise at Ijen

Sunrise is around 5 am. The best place to see the sunrise is from the top of the crater. It takes about 40 minutes to climb out of the crater. If you want to watch sunrise overlooking the lake start climbing back up around 4 am. When the sun does rise over Ijen it happens very quickly. In just 10 minutes the sky turns from a light grey and the colours appear. It’s the best time for photos.

I spent at least an hour at the top of the crater after sunrise walking around and taking photos of the area. It was a really nice way to end the Ijen volcano tour. If you have the energy you can enter the crater again for a closer look at the crater lake. It’s worth the effort as the landscape is unreal. Everything is coloured yellow because of the sulphur and you have the bright turquoise crater lake in front of you.

Trekking Back to Base

The last part of the tour is the walk back down the hill. It took me about 30 minutes to reach the bottom. By the time I reached the bottom of the volcano I was exhausted. My muscles ached and I was having trouble walking (I passed a lot of people who couldn’t walk any further and were paying the miners to cart them down to the bottom). It’s a tough hike, but you are rewarded for the effort by the beautiful views.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed the Ijen crater tour. The Midnight Ijen Tour a lot more interesting than the Ijen day tour. Seeing the blue flames and sunrise over Ijen Volcano is really quite special. Although it’s a long night and it can be cold I would recommend the Ijen tour to anybody visiting East Java for the first time. It’s a really unforgettable experience.

I remember when I woke up at midnight at hiked Ijen – it was exhausting! Especially when you’re starving! It was amazing though – that blue fire is quite something, although there were a few moments where I couldn’t breathe or see anything!

Hi Salmon, Thanks for stopping by here. Should go and visit Ijen 🙂

' src=

mbak firsta, how much the ticket price for the domestic? and is it so crowded at the crater when you took those blue fire picture? (compared with Bromo maybe). and the last is. would you give some tips to capture the blue fire with a camera? thank you 😀

Hi Gallant, The entrance fee is Rp 10,000 per person. Yes it was pretty crowded that night 🙂 The trick is to hike up fast so you can be one of the first few people who arrive at the bottom of the crater. The other tip is to find a spot where you will be able to take a photo of the blue fire without there being a crazy crowd in frame. Bring a tripod as well to help with taking a photo at slow shutter speed (for the blue fire or when it is dark).

In one day the volcano produces around 60 tons of sulphur that is collected around 300 local people work here (Ijen Sulfur Mining). The miners carry the sulfur rocks from the Crater down to the post in bamboo baskets miner carries sulfur with load 60kg to 80kg.

This is far from an easy taskAround the last of 2016 some sulfur miners made modification, they use push cart for carrying Sulphur , that only from the top to paltuding (name of parking area) from crater hole to the top of mount sulphur miners still use bamboo baskets. At this moment sulphur miners learn english and some of them change their job a a local tour guide, it’s much easier job than carry the sulphur for the factory.

Kawah Ijen Tour From Bali – The Ultimate Ijen Crater Hike Guide

Posted on Last updated: December 2, 2020

If you’re an adventure and hiking fan, you need to add the Kawah Ijen sunrise hike to your travel bucket list. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano in East Java, and one of the few places in the world where you can see blue flames.

When I found out about it on my first Bali, I decided that I couldn’t miss out on this experience. We did a Ijen crater tour from Bali , and while being pretty knackering, it was one of the highlights of our trip.

If you’re also planning to do the Mount Ijen sunrise hike, this is the guide for you! In this post I’ve outlined everything you need to do about doing the Kawah Ijen night hike, whether you do it yourself or with a tour .

I’ve included some basic information about this incredible natural phenomenon, how to get there, what to expect, what you need to bring and some Ijen crater tour options to choose from.

So let’s dive in and start planning your Bali to Mount Ijen tour!

About Kawah Ijen

Kawah Ijen is on the island of Java in Indonesia , an island famous for its spectacular temples and wild nature. Ijen is actually a group of composite volcanoes.

Kawah Ijen is the highest and the one with the largest crater, which most travellers visit and hike due to the blue flame phenomenon.

The blue flames of Kawah Ijen are a natural phenomenon visible only here due to the combustion of sulphuric gases. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano, but it doesn’t erupt lava as you would expect.

The eruptions are actually of methane and other gases, which make it particularly dangerous as they can’t be predicted like normal eruptions.

The Ijen crater is filled of bright turquoise water, which despite being beautiful to see, is actually extremely acidic.

Mount Ijen has a dramatic and dangerous beauty to it. Doing a Mount Ijen sunrise tour, hiking up at night to see the blue flames and sunrise is an experience I recommend to all outdoors adventure lovers.

How to get to Mount Ijen from Bali

Ijen is in East Java. To get there from Bali you need to drive for around 4 hours (from the main tourist parts of Bali like Ubud, Seminyak or Canggu) to Gilimanuk, where you then get a 1-hour ferry to Java, and then for a final 1-hour drive to the base of Kawah Ijen.

The easiest way to get to Ijen from Bali is do to an organised tour , since they will handle all the transfers and you will then have a guide to support you during the hike.

You can also get there without a tour by either renting a scooter, renting a car or a combination of buses. While it might be cheaper I personally think it would add quite a lot of faff to an already long journey and isn’t worth it.

Our experience doing a Mount Ijen sunrise tour from Bali

We set off from Seminyak at 6pm on the Friday. We did 4- hour minivan drive to Gilimanuk, where we got a 1-hour long ferry to East Java, and then another 1-hour drive to the base camp of Kawah Ijen.

We were ready to be up all night, so spending the car journey sleeping if you can is the best way to ensure you are fresh for the hike.

We were told to wear warm clothes as it can get cold on top of the volcano, and stupidly dismissed it wondering how cold it could really be.

Unsurprisingly, we were wrong and as soon as we stepped out of the car we were greeted by the chilly mountain air.

As our guides explained some of the basics about climbing Kawah Ijen they also handed out warm coats to the foolish people like me that didn’t bring one, along with headlights to climb up in the dark and gas masks for the sulphur gases.

At 2am we set off from the base camp and started hiking under the starry sky. Being a city girl born and raised, I don’t often get to see the night sky unaffected by light pollution, and it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

The hike can be intense and quite steep at parts, but the path is easy to walk since there is an almost paved path, as it used every day by the sulphur miners. It was easy also because we were continuously supported by our guides.

Harry and the other guides know the volcano inside out, and it was fascinating to hear their stories of when they hiked Kawah Ijen as sulphur miners.

The Blue Flames of Kawah Ijen

After the first steep 45 minutes the path flattens out a bit, which makes the second half of the hike easier.

When we were about to approach the peak we were advised to put on our gas masks, as we were downwind form the mines and the sulphur was blowing in our direction.

After 1.5 hours of hiking under the stars we made it to the top, just in time to see the  blue flames . This natural phenomenon happens due to the combustion of sulphuric gases.

The gases emerge from cracks in the rock at high pressure and temperature, and when they come in contact with the air, they ignite, creating the blue flames.

When we were there we weren’t allowed to go closer to the flames or inside Ijen crater due to the high levels of methane. Depending on the season and daily weather conditions you might be able to go inside the crater.

While the blue flames were undeniably cool, it wasn’t the highlight of the tour for me. The beauty of the landscape, hiking under the starry sky and the unforgettable sunrise were what made the experience so incredible for us.

The Kawah Ijen Sunrise

Once we decided we had seen enough blue flames we started hiking once again. This part was considerably easier since the area around the crater of the volcano is pretty much flat.

We walked all the way around the crater to the east side, where we sat to wait for the sunrise. That moment of trepidation, sat with other hikers as the sky began to lighten was truly magical.

As the sun came up everything around us became golden, revealing the beauty of the Mount Ijen landscape.

We spent a couple hours at the top, enjoying the warmth of the rising sun and exploring the top of the crater, admiring the turquoise lake beneath us.

The hike back was considerably easier, although a little hard on the knees. On the way back we saw the sulphur miners carrying bamboo baskets, filled with up to 70kg of sulphurs on their shoulders.

Enjoying the morning light after the night hike

Enjoying the morning light after the night hike

It’s crazy to think that we hiked Kawah Ijen as tourists, admiring the beautiful night sky, the peculiarity of the blue flames and acid lake, and the stunning sunrise, while others were hiking it at our same time but for work, trying to make a living.

That is one of the things I love about travelling, you see new things and meet new people, and it makes you reflect on your experiences and how you affect those you meet.

If you want to find out more about the job of the sulphur miners at Kawah Ijen you can check out this documentary by the  BBC  or article by  CNN .

Once we made it back to the base camp we then drove off to a traditional Javanese family house, for a typical Javanese breakfast. After being up and hiking all night this was much needed and appreciated.

We then got in the car and got ready to nap on our 6-hour journey back to Bali.

Can you hike Ijen without a guide?

It depends on your fitness and confidence level. The trail itself is fairly easy and well marked. There are also so many people going up between tourists and miners that it’s almost impossible to get lost.

However if you want to go down inside the crater the path is a little trickier, and having a guide help you and show you where to put your feet will make it much easier.

Personally I was glad to have a guide with us. Our guide used to work as a sulphur miner and had lots of interesting stories about Kawah Ijen. It was also one of my first night hikes so I was glad for the extra support.

If you’re an experienced hiker and have done lots of night hikes before you would be fine without one. Just rent a gas mask at the base of Ijen, follow the crowds and you’re sorted.

Is doing a Ijen crater tour from Bali worth it?

It ultimately depends on how long you have in Bali, but personally, I don’t think so.

While there’s no doubt that hiking under the Milky Way, seeing the natural phenomenon of the blue flames and that stunning sunrise is a magical experience, it’s also a knackering one.

On my first trip to Indonesia I only had 10 days in Bali . Taking 24 hours out of that to see Ijen destroyed us, and we spent the few days after that in Ubud just recovering from the night hike and long journey.

If you have longer in Indonesia then yes, I think you should do it. If I were to go back and hike Ijen again I would do one of the following options instead.

Do a 3-day Ijen & Bromo tour from Bali – The journey from Bali to East Java is pretty long and knackering. I recommend visiting also Mount Bromo while you’re at it.

That way the long bus and ferry journeys will be spread out and not back to back in 24 hours, and you’ll see also one of the most stunning natural landscapes in Indonesia.

Click here to find out more about doing a 3-day Bromo & Ijen tour!

Borobudur, Bromo & Ijen tour from Yogyakarta – Alternatively you can also do a 4-day tour from Yogyakarta. This tour also includes a visit to Borobudur, one of the most beautiful temples in Indonesia.

It’s the perfect alternative and gives you the opportunity to see more than just Bali. However it’s quite a long trip so best suited for those who have a long time to spend in Bali.

Hike Mount Batur in Bali instead – If you’re tight on time and can only visit Bali, but really want to do a volcano night and sunrise hike, then I would recommend hiking Mount Batur instead.

Sure, there are no blue flames and the landscape is completely different, but you will still get the night hike experience, without having to take 24 hours out of your day to do so.

Where to stay for your Mount Ijen hike

If you’re doing your Ijen crater tour from Bali it doesn’t really matter where in Bali you’re staying, since it will usually include pick-up and drop-off.

I’ve listed below some of the places I stayed at during my two trips to Bali, which I particularly liked and can recommend.

In Ubud:  Desa Visesa  or  Komaneka at Monkey Forest

I stayed in Ubud twice on separate occasions and in very different types of hotels.

The first time I stayed at Komaneka at Monkey Forest, located right in the centre of Ubud, an easy walking distance to all the main attractions.

Despite being so central it wasn’t noisy, and the resort is very beautiful. I also stayed in a resort called Desa Visesa, which was a bit outside the centre of Ubud but they offer a free shuttle service in the town centre.

Both offer standard rooms at affordable prices, or private villas with pool if you’re looking for something a bit fancier. They’re both also very Insagrammable hotels , perfect for those picture perfect holiday shots!

In Cepaka:  Villa Sungai

If you’re willing to splurge a bit on your Bali trip, Villa Sungai is the place to do it. Villa Sungai has been featured multiple times in luxury travel magazines and has won multiple awards.

The property itself is beautiful, with outdoors bathrooms and private pools. The staff are simply stunning and really go out of their way to make your stay there unforgettable. It’s one of the best private pool villas in Bali .

In Canggu:  Pondok Homestay

In Canggu we stayed at Pondok Homestay , a lovely property a short 20 minute walk down to the beach. For 24 EUR a night we had a private ensuite room with air conditioning and a pool.

The property was just off the main road and next to a rice field, away from the noise of the busy street, which made it a very quiet and pleasant place to stay.

What to bring to hike Kawah Ijen

If you choose to do a Ijen guided tour they will provide you with the essentials like gas mask and a warm coat.

You don’t need much besides the usual travel essentials, but I’ve listed below some things that you should remember to pack.

Warm coat – I know what you’re thinking, you’re going to Bali, you don’t want to bring a warm coat with you! With a tour they should give you one, but better safe than cold!

Water bottle – There are no services whatsoever once you start the hike, so make sure to bring plenty of water with you for the hike!

Comfortable walking shoes – You don’t want your feet to hurt half way through the hike. Bring some comfy walking shoes with you and you’ll be sorted for a night of hiking!

Head torch – You’ll be hiking in the dark after all! They should give you one if you do a tour, but if you’re hiking alone you will definitely need one, even if there will be lots of lights from other people hiking.

IJEN TOUR FROM BANYUWANGI

by thepinay solobackpacker | Aug 25, 2016 | Indonesia , Travel Guide | 0 comments

At twelve midnight we started our ascent, I perpetually pause to catch my breath, trekking beneath a narrow ribbon of sparkling stars that twine around the crest of the gorge.  Three hours after, there, in the silence pierced only by the wind that had made this great crater on the planet, I climb on what seemed like a surface of a planet millions of years back in time.  The canyon walls that clad us are reminiscent of the Earth’s creation, and it is rather amazing to see how we are dwarfed by nature.

IJEN9 (1 of 1)

I like places that remind us we are merely a fraction of the universe…like Mt.Ijen, where a tourist standing on the foreground looks pretty much like a tiny dot.  Extending in its incomparable majesty for several kilometers, Ijen volcano complex cuts an awesome course across Banyuwangi on East Java, Indonesia .  Yes, there are much more famous volcanoes in Indonesia, but by far, none to my eyes is more gorgeous than Ijen.

IJEN8 (1 of 1)

Aside from its Instagram-worthy topography, what makes Kawa Ijen (Mt.Ijen) special is, the blue fire .  Its mouth has been sporadically belching plumes of toxic sulfur over some parts of its caldera.  Sulfur gases ignite into blue flames when they collide with air, and at night, like glowing sapphire tributary, they gush down into wondrous, shattered canyons lighting up the night sky. This surreal phenomenon, seduces curious tourists, who hurry like ants to reach the caldera before the fleeting moment fades away.

At the first light of the day, the electric blue flames turn red.  Meanwhile, the toxic sulfurs are collected by local miners.  Ceramic pipes installed at the caldera’s wall reroute sulfur gases which condenses into liquid sulfur before they are hardened, collected and broken down into pieces.  The solidified sulfur are usually placed in huge baskets and carried by local miners.

IJEN3 (1 of 1)

Imagine carrying 70 to 90 kilograms of these deadly chemicals up and down a volcano?  It is a hard-earned money for the sweating miners who are paid by a nearby refinery for about IDR 173,000 ( Php 600/ USD 13) a day.  So if a local miner offers to sell you molded sulfurs for IDR 10,000 (PHP 35/ USD 0.75),  I encourage you to buy  one since that  money will go a long way.

At sunrise, tourists turn their attention to  Kawah Ijen Crater Lake.  According to National Geographic, it is the world’s largest body of water filled with hydrochloric acid, reason why it is shamrock green.

Going back on used-trails in blazing sun, we encounter many other beautiful sights; like the morning mist that drifts past the mammoth Mt. Merapi overlooking a highland wilderness rich in history, in mineral resources and scenic beauty.  Without a doubt, Kawah Ijen is an epitome of nature’s surreal beauty and prowess.

IJENVOLCANOSMALL (1 of 1)

HOW TO GET TO IJEN FROM BANYUWANGI

From Bali, you can take a ferry from Giliminuk to Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi.  They have trips every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day.  Fare is around IDR 8,000 /PHP 28 / USD 0.60  and travel time is about 45 minutes.

From Ketapang Ferry Terminal, there are regular yellow colored bemos and shuttle buses to downtown Banyuwangi.   You can hire 4×4 jeep with driver at Banyuwangi for about IDR 500,000 PHP 1,750 / USD 38  good for 5 persons to take you to the base camp of Kawah Ijen crater. Travel time is 1.5 hours.

The climb will take roughly 2 hours to the rim of Ijen and another 1 hour down to the crater if you wish to witness the blue fire.  I recommend hiring a guide if you wish to see the blue fire for your own security because the climb down to the crater is steep not to mention you are helping the local economy.

If you are alone, best to just book a tour package with a travel agent.  You can scout for the best tour rates to Ijen at the city center in Banyuwangi where travel agencies abound.  Shared group Kawah Ijen tour rates usually start at IDR 300,000 /PHP 105O/ USD 23 per person which includes 4×4 jeep with driver, mask, headlamp and guide.

Alternatively, you can fly to Banyuwangi Airport from Bali and hire a 4×4 jeep with driver to take you to Kawa Ijen’s base camp for the trek or book a tour package with a travel agent or your hotel.

WHERE TO STAY IN IJEN

Travel tips when climbing kawah ijen.

IJEN2 (1 of 1)

⊗  The hike to Ijen volcano should not be taken lightly, but it does not mean you have to be an experienced mountaineer to do this trek.  Wear winter clothes such as thick jackets, gloves, bonnet and hiking shoes because it can get pretty cold.

⊗  There is no toilet on the volcano trail, so before the climb, you can use the comfort room at the base camp for IDR 2,000 / PHP  7 / USD 0.15.

⊗  If climbing at night, remember that the trail to Ijen crater is dark, so wear headlamps and bring flashlight.

⊗  If you are not an avid mountaineer, bringing a climbing stick for the ascent can help.  If you run out of breath, just pause for a few minutes.

⊗  If you plan on heading down the crater for the blue fire and you are not an experienced hiker, I suggest you hire a guide as the rock track is pretty steep.

⊗  Although some tour operators give out surgical masks to tourists before the climb; that is not enough if you wish to go near the blue flame.  Locals rent out gas masks at the rim for IDR 50,000 / PHP 175 / USD 4.

⊗  The entrance to Ijen volcano trail opens at 3:00 AM. So if you plan to see the blue fire, I suggest starting the climb at 12 midnight to ensure you have enough time to reach the rim. It will take roughly 2 hours to climb the rim and another hour to go down the crater for the blue fire.  The blue flame fades once daylight appears, around 5:00 AM.

⊗  Local miners work at Ijen even at night time, carrying 70-90 kilograms of sulfur.  If you see a miner coming your way, please make way for them and let them pass first.

⊗  Local miners might also offer you small figurines made from sulfur as souvenirs for about IDR 10,000 / PHP 35 / USD 0.75 per piece.  I recommend buying from them since it is additional income for these people.   Some airlines though prohibit sulfur on checked-in luggage.

⊗  If you want a hassle-free tour, aside from booking at Banyuwangi, you can also avail of tour packages to Ijen from Bali, Surabaya, Probolingo and Yogyakarta where the package usually includes a Bromo tour .

Ijen Crater

Ijen Crater has been calling mountain buffs and nature lovers for years with its wonders. This is no ordinary crater as it shoots and sparks a blue fire in the air. The image of blue flames blowing out of the crater resembles a giant stove. Some see it as an imaginary land in the fairy tales that come to life.

East Java’s Ijen Nature Reserve is proud of being the home of this rare phenomenon. It cannot be any prouder as there are only two sites to witness the blue fire. Other than Indonesia, similar natural magic is available in the Nordic dainty island, Iceland.

It is an honor to possess this blessing and pass it down to future generations. Mount Ijen, an active stratovolcano towers 2,443 meters above sea level, and lastly erupted in 1999. Although it did not enjoy much popularity compared to fellow volcanoes such as Bromo and Rinjani.

Ijen Crater Banyuwangi

It slowly rose to fame in 2014 thanks to its compelling blue flames. To the traditional sulfur miners, it was nothing new—they already discovered it in the 1950s. Today, thousands of tourists flocking Ijen Crater every day for an adventure of a lifetime.

Ijen Crater Entrance Fee

As with most of the tourist destinations here, the admission fee for an international tourist is different than the local one. The entrance ticket to the Ijen crater is Rp100.000 on weekdays and Rp150.000 on weekends and national holidays. Tourists can purchase the ticket online or pay for it at the entrance gate.

See: Madakaripura Waterfall Guide, The Highest in East Java .

Ijen Crater Opening Hours

Travelers can drop a visit to Ijen Crater every day, better come at midnight. Remember that the blue flames are only visible at night and it requires midnight hiking.

See: Bromo National Park, Top Activities & Guide.

Ijen Crater Legendary Blue Fire

The so-called blue fire is not actually “the fire” as it is a complex chemical reaction. The sulfuric gas comes in contact with oxygen, leading to the combustion of the gas. Thus, the infamous “blue flames” will show up and dance before the wondering eyes. The size of the crater is 960 meters x 600 meters, 200 meters deep.

The best time to watch this ballet of fire is from 2 to 4 AM. It takes about two hours for this midnight trekking, about three kilometers. It is pitch black and the only source of light is the flashlights. Sometimes, the smell of intense sulfur lingers in the cold mountainous air.

human powered cart

It does not last long though as the sulfuric fumes go in the wind direction. Don’t rush to the top and please take each step very carefully.

World’s Largest Acidic Lake

Another natural treasure of Ijen Crater is its acidic lake, the biggest one in the world. To get a better look at the sulfur mines around the lake, explorers have to make a descent down where the sulfur smells stronger. Ijen lake’s water is greenish-blue and the bottom is not visible.

It is so murky, that the sun can hardly penetrate it—perhaps it is the acid. Scientifically speaking, the lake has a rich content of hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. Rumor has it that its acidity can physically dissolve a grownup man within hours.

sulfur miner

Nonetheless, many find it intriguing and have decided to dip their finger into it. Although nothing happens, it is not recommended and tourists have to wash their hands immediately.

Ijen Crater Sunrise

As the marvelous dance of flame comes to an end, the morning sun gradually rises. Its golden ray showers Ijen’s peak and unveils the dark remnants of the night. The view from the top gives a look at the neighboring mountains. The tips of Raung , Suket, and Rante, that surround Ijen Crater are very visible.

There is nothing beyond the horizon but more mountaintops, clouds, and sky. The sun also allows a clearer vision of Ijen’s gray dusty sandy terrain. A seven-meter-wide path allows nature enthusiasts and locals to walk around comfortably.

Tourists crowd at the crater

Steep slopes flank the sides of the path, smoke blowing out of the cracks. The temperature gets warmer as the sun rises higher and higher above.

Sulfur-based Ornaments

It is true that sulfur is very much used for production purposes. In Ijen however, the traditional sulfur miners turn it into pieces of art. They melt chunks of sulfur and mold them into souvenirs of various sizes and models. There are palm-sized teddy bears, flowers, hearts that say “I Love Ijen”, and napkin holders.

Each ornament’s price range from at least Rp25.000 – the bigger the size, the higher the price. Every day, the miners stare death in the face by climbing down into the crater. They do such a life-risking ordeal in search of sulfur to support their family. They wear simple scarves wrapped around their faces as a mask for protection.

Aciditic lake

No proper safety gear such as helmets and boots, or even tethers. The only way to appreciate their hard labor is by buying some of their artworks.

Human-powered Carts

There is an innovative way to get to the top of Ijen Crater; by human-powered carts. These carts are similar to the carts for transporting heavy objects used by construction workers. It has two slim wheels, one on each side, and it has no top. It is 70 centimeters wide and it can carry only one adult in one go.

The passenger has to lie on his or her back on the cart, face up. He has to bend his knees and hangs on tight to the cart’s bars. Two men pull it from the front and one man is pushing it from the back.

Ijen Lake

This humble mode of transportation is popular among elder vacationers who cannot hike such distance. One trip to the top costs Rp600.000, and the trip back down is Rp200.000.

The base camp is the only place with public restrooms, that’s it. There are no public restrooms along the track to the top, not even one. During the trek, some climbers decide to dig up a little hole to relieve themselves. This toilet hole not only saves lives but also creates an unforgettable experience.

Guides are ready to help with the hiking, ensuring that nobody is getting lost. The fee for the guide varies starting from at least Rp 100.000. Hikers can rent a protective mask (to protect them from sulfur) for Rp25.000 each. A flashlight is also for sale for those who forget to bring one.

How To Get To Ijen Crater

From East Java’s capital Surabaya, hop on a train and stop at Jember Train Station. From the train station, take public van transportation to the Arjasa bus terminal in Jember. Next, stop at Arjasa and take another small elf to Bondowoso Bus Terminal.

From Bondowoso Bus Terminal, get on a minibus called elf bounds for Sempol Village. Once arrived in Sempol village, get a motorcycle taxi ojek to Ijen. It is, of course, more convenient to reach the destination by car or motorcycle.

In that case, start the trip from Banyuwangi regency, still in East Java. From Banyuwangi to Ijen Crater is about 35 kilometers, taking two hours of driving. Despite its simple route, Banyuwangi – Licin – Paltuding – Ijen, the road is heavily damaged.

Ijen Crater has indeed been a fascination for mountain enthusiasts and nature lovers for years. Its natural wonders are far from ordinary, as it emits and ignites a stunning blue fire in the air. The sight of blue flames gushing out of the crater resembles a colossal stove. For some, it’s like a land out of fairy tales come to life.

The Ijen Nature Reserve in East Java takes pride in being the exclusive home of this extraordinary phenomenon. It can’t be prouder, considering there are only two places in the world where you can witness the blue fire. Apart from Indonesia, a similar natural marvel exists in the charming Nordic island, Iceland. Such natural phenomena are among the Earth’s wonders that we should cherish and protect. Trekking shoes are not required, sneakers with the ability to grip on the ground or rocks are quite appropriate. With the entire surface covered, your feet can be protected from the impact of other objects than open sandals.
  • Warm jackets, can also use clothes that are layered and can be easily removed or put on. This warm jacket will have many functions at the top of the Ijen crater, resisting the wind and cold weather of Mount Ijen.
  • Bring a set of change of clothes, after climbing the smell of sweat and dust will definitely not feel comfortable while in the vehicle.
  • Remove all your jewelry before traveling. Exposure to sulfur will make it react to make your jewelry black. Silver rings can no longer look like silver after coming into contact with sulfur in Ijen crater.
  • Gas and health protective masks. Health masks and hand sanitizers are mandatory to carry and wear at all times from before to after climbing. Gas masks are indispensable when in an area filled with thick sulfur fumes.
  • If you wear contact lenses, it’s a good idea to temporarily remove them and replace them with glasses. Sulfur can be irritating to the eyes, some people are bothered and some are okay. It’s good to bring glasses if the lenses bother you
  • Bring a hand or head flashlight, and have some spare batteries handy. Sometimes it’s not you who need the battery backup, it’s your traveling companion who needs it.
  • You don’t need a big backpack with everything except snacks, snacks and drinks. Don’t overload your backpack with unnecessary items.
  • Climbing sticks or sticks are very helpful for balance on the way. If you don’t have it, you can ask a guide to make it from bamboo or the like
  • If the group is large enough, take several guides. One person to guide the group that has a higher speed, the other guides accompany in the back lane. This is definitely the best decision to make everyone feel comfortable and safe during the climb.
  • If you don’t feel comfortable after running on sulfuric gas, tell your guide or another partner. From his experience will definitely be informed What should you do for such a condition.
  • Just a Day Pack or a small backpack, this is not a big mountain expedition, you don’t need to carry a lot of things
  • Wet wipes, good idea to bring during travel.
  • Embark on a journey with an open mind and bond with people you’ve never met before.
  • Ijen Crater etiquette: You will pass sulfur miners with a basket of sulfur on their peak with a load of about 70-90 kilograms one person on a 2 hour walk to the collection point. Miners make the trip twice a day.
  • If you meet miners, step aside for a moment, first they cross the road with a heavy burden on their back lighter if they see tourists who do not take their way.
  • If you are careful and polite, they will also appreciate you.

2 – Who Can Enjoy Activities on Mount Ijen?

  • Explorers and mountain climbers.
  • Tourists who like nature and natural phenomena and are better prepared to face the uncertainties of nature. You will be able to directly witness the real life of the sulfur miners here so that you are always humble and grateful for your current life, at least you are not working in Ijen crater to mine sulfur.
  • Travelers who have a passion for adventure and explore unique and unusual experiences including dangers and inconvenience

3 – Who is not recommended to take a trip to Mount Ijen?

  • If you have problems with breathing (have a history of asthma or panic easily when inhaling anything other than oxygen).
  • Especially for those of you who have very sensitive eyesight, it is recommended not to enter the caldera area of Ijen crater lake.
  • You DON’T NEED to have any climbing experience, or great fitness level to get here, but if you’re out of breath while climbing, it can be a little frustrating.
  • Those of you who like a relaxing trip with just amazing views, need extra struggle and energy to get to Mount Ijen.
  • Those of you who don’t like unexpected surprises that can affect your hiking experience (changes in temperature, changes in smells, and lots of hiking trails)
  • Those of you who are always in a hurry with time issues, with guaranteed time precision or have to catch up with plane or train schedules.
  • Those of you who like to push yourself should be at Ijen Crater to see the Blue Fire. There are no guarantees, nature is unpredictable and if due to a large sulfur cloud it is too dangerous on that day to descend into the crater,
  • You must be able to comply with it for your own safety.
  • If you feel very uncomfortable with many other people in the dark at night, down steep tracks that are not clearly marked, there is no lighting available during the trip or are always worried about steep slopes without fences and protection.
  • If you want security services and emergency help in this condition. If you place safety as the top priority for your leisure activity habits, think twice before you do any activities on Mt Ijen.

4 – How was the experience during the climb to Mount Ijen Crater?

The climbers will start their journey from the Pal Tuding post and will cover a distance of 3 km to the edge of the Ijen crater caldera. The normal schedule for climbing every day will be open starting at 01.00AM.

The journey begins with a fairly wide and straight trail, a dirt road without rocks, which snakes up the steep slope for about an hour.

You’ll be out of breath on this hike (for people of normal fitness level), and since it’s not a time race, take a break after every 5-7 minutes, and re-set your breath, you’ll be fine.

It will definitely work without problems, the last 30 minutes at the end of the trip will feel easier because the road is flatter and less steep than before. It’s generally going to be 2 hours on average if you’re consistently moving, and don’t sit still much except to catch your breath.

Using a trekking pole will definitely help you a lot to maintain balance during your hike. You can also use wood or bamboo sticks that you may find between trips.

Reaching the top of the caldera before 4 am

Need to be a little careful in this situation, especially when there are other visitors, most visitors also want to enjoy the charm of blue lava or blue fire at the same time, fighting over the path that is not as wide as the previous climb.

Be careful putting your feet, don’t carelessly use a wooden handle that isn’t necessarily sturdy, especially when it’s still dark. If you feel uncomfortable with this situation, you can also enjoy the blue flames of Ijen Crater from a distance.

It can be even more complicated if you find thick sulfur smoke. The path that goes down can only be passed by one person. Don’t allow anyone to force you down with speed, it’s better to be able to measure your speed and stop to give others behind you a chance to catch up and pass you than to force yourself. Take care of your own safety, this is very important in this situation.

If you think you can go faster, don’t push each other who is slower. Be tolerant of people who are slower than you when walking down the crater.

Closer to the World’s Largest Acid Lake

Not many people are willing to go further down and get closer to the acidic lakes of Ijen Crater (perhaps because the sulfur clouds are thicker) but there are some who are quite curious to experience it and at the same time see up close the sulfur mining process.

Ijen crater lake is very acidic (hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid) and also hot. So don’t try to enter like in a swimming pool, but is it okay if you want to feel it by slightly touching it with your fingertips and see if your fingers really dissolve with the acid lake?. The best advice should not do something like this.

Back to the Peak For Beautiful Sunrise at Ijen Crater

If you are satisfied enough to watch and linger near Lake Ijen, another one that is a pity to miss and there is still enough time for the sun to rise on Mount Ijen.

Along the slopes of the road and the edge of the Ijen crater, you will find many sulfur traders that are uniquely formed to be sold as souvenirs to take home.

Buy some of these sulfur souvenirs, even if you’re not sure what they do. At least what you do is to buy the merchandise while at the same time rewarding the miners for their hard and difficult efforts.

5 – Interesting Things You Can Find During the Ascent to Ijen Crater

All of your sacrifices and struggles during the climbing process will all pay off when you first set foot on the top of the Ijen caldera.

# Blue Fire / Blue Fire Ijen

This unique natural phenomenon can only be seen in the dark, a glowing blue color (people call it neon blue or electric blue) that glows melts from the cracks of the rock on the cliff bottom of the crater of Mount Ijen.

# Real Ijen Morning View

As the stones change, from darkness turning to bright morning, the uniqueness of the blue fire is taken over by the sunrise at the top of Ijen, the colorful presentation of Mount Ijen’s nature really fascinates the eye. Gradations of blue to green tosca, orange and pink occur at the same time and place, at the top of Ijen crater.

# Sulfur Rock Mining

Watching sulfur mining activities up close, one of the dangerous jobs with high risk. Seeing firsthand how very difficult it is to be a miner, even though we feel uncomfortable, we also feel grateful for how easy our lives are compared to the men at the bottom of the crater of Mount Ijen.

6 – When is the Right Time to Climb to Mount Ijen?

Ijen Crater, a cool destination, the most appropriate location to spend time to gain a lot of experience and knowledge, it’s a shame if you came here at the wrong time, here are the best suggestions.

# Avoid weekends and long holidays

If possible, try to avoid the holiday season to Mount Ijen, because it would be uncomfortable to be in a location that has limited capacity with large crowds.

The route and path from the climbing post to the top of the crater is quite wide, but the track to the lake and blue fire is just a path that sometimes you have to take turns going through it.

# Dry season

The best season to come to Mount Ijen is not during the rainy season, the amount of fog and rain is a problem for the best image quality you want, it’s also definitely more troublesome if it’s raining and cold at the top. Best weather prediction in Ijen Crater between May to September.

# Night Climb

If you have a goal to Ijen Crater is Blue Fire or Blue Fire, start climbing at 01.00 and a prediction of 2 hours can reach the lip of the Ijen crater caldera. Blue Fire will be more beautiful to be enjoyed when it is dark and begins to gradually disappear at 05.00 in the morning alternating with the sunrise of Ijen crater.

7 – How Long Will It Take For The Whole Trip To Ijen Crater?

Most people call it a One Day Tour or a one day trip without staying overnight. As an illustration, depart from Bali at 18.00 and return again after breakfast the next day. Almost 24 hours if indeed the trip is made more relaxed. But for much more relaxing trip from Bali to Ijen, we should stay 1 night at one of the hotel near Ijen, and we will wake up early morning for Mount Ijen hiking .

The schedule can be more predictable and accurate if you depart from Surabaya because there are no crossings. Depart in the afternoon via the Bondowoso route to the Pal Tuding post. Climbing activities to Mount Ijen are very possible to be scheduled with a one-day round trip without staying overnight, it is very possible if Ijen Crater is the only destination.

You need a good physical and body condition, because you will be traveling a long way and this must be very tiring, driving for more than 5 hours without sleeping immediately climbing and returning home.

8 – How about the preparation for climbing to Ijen?

Need to prepare for this trip to Ijen? Not really, most of the tourists who come to Ijen Crater are the result of spontaneous decisions and that day also want to go to Ijen. Especially for young people who like adventure in nature and their body or physical condition is still fit and perfect for the normal size of most people.

9 – Route to Mount Ijen?

If we notice  from the flow of tourists to Mount Ijen, there are two main entrances, namely from Bali and Java. Most of the Bali routes are from foreign countries who previously spent their time traveling on the island of the gods, and the Java route departing from the city of Surabaya or Malang is dominated by local tourists from the Indonesia.

Lets we concern the most popular route to Ijen.

9.A # Bali Route via Banyuwangi

Traveling from Bali, you must cross the Bali strait for about 35 minutes to the city of Banyuwangi from the Gilimanuk ferry port and land at the Ketapang port of Banyuwangi, as the closest reference to Ijen Crater (45 km) compared to the Bondowoso entrance (64 km).

By rented or private vehicle, it is shorter to cross the Licin route to the Pal Tuding climbing post, compared to via Bondowoso on the north side (2 hours versus 3-4 hours via Bondowoso).

Although the road is quite good, it should be noted that for important things, especially vehicles, ideally you can use a car with 4-wheel drive, or with a capacity greater than 1500 CC, considering that the Banyuwangi route has quite a lot of turns with sharp inclines. It is very risky and risky if you neglect about a prime vehicle.

Over the years, road conditions have been gradually improved, supported by the international event Tour De Ijen Banyuwangi, as a bicycle racing event introducing the Ijen Crater destination to the world stage.

9.B# Java route via Bondowoso

If you are already in Java, another alternative route is crossing Bondowoso. Generally, tourists depart from the city of Surabaya or Malang.

From Bondowoso city, if using public transportation, please continue by renting a vehicle or Ijen jeep to Paltuding Post (Paltuding Post 64 km from Bondowoso) at a cost of around Rp. 500,000 – Rp. 700,000 including driver, petrol and parking. The longest it takes is 120 minutes to reach Paltuding Post from Bondowoso.

Renting a car is a practical way to travel to Ijen Crater, because traveling by public transport (bus) can be tiring with no fixed schedule. The local road to Paltuding Post is very steep and there are some parts that are damaged so that a 4-wheel drive car is needed, it would be better with a local local driver.

10 – Guide to Ijen Crater, Is It Necessary?

The answers to these questions there are always two options, yes and no. But it would be nice to continue some of this information for your purposes during the climb to Ijen Crater before deciding yes or no.

10.A# Independent Climbing Without a Guide.

The manager of the Ijen Nature Park and Nature Reserve does not absolutely require to use a guide to Mount Ijen. You can manage it independently, starting from booking area entrance tickets until the climbing event takes place.

The hiking trail to the top is very safe, especially to Mount Ijen, it doesn’t have to fully require skills and knowledge to climb the mountain, moreover this is only a 2 hour hike. You are not really alone on the trip, there are quite a number of other flocks together, Ijen Crater is never empty of visitors even during the month of Ramadan.

10.B# No More Expensive Using a Guide

There is a price to pay if you don’t want to go through all these preparation stages yourself. Starting from preparing schedule arrangements, ordering tickets, vehicles, places to eat, you are also fully aware of aspects of local culture and travel etiquette at Ijen Crater and the potential dangers.

The decision to involve a guide can also save time, hassle and ensure your safety and not have to be a backpacker alone.

For the most part, hiking guides were formerly sulfur mining workers. Due to serious health problems due to the daily sulfur fumes he inhaled, physical injuries and reasons for insufficient results were the reasons to switch professions to become a tour guide at Ijen Crater. This is also a reason to spend good money if you decide to use a scouting service.

It’s normal to face the conditions of Ijen Crater with its poisonous gas, the guide will make sure the group will be safe and give important information long before the trip. Guides also understand how to behave in dangerous situations and how to “read” group members who may need help.

A guide will also help prepare the needs for gas masks, entrance tickets, favorite places to take photos and information about the daily life of a sulfur miner in Ijen Crater, this is also mostly previous life experience.

Bali magic tour as one of the provider foe Ijen trip from Bali, has a connection with the local as part of our safety concern and also how we supporting the local guide to get a job in sustainable way.

If you are planning for Ijen Crater Blue fire start from Bali in 24 Hours trip, Bali Magic tour provide ONE DAY IJEN CRATER TOUR. For More Information Please Click HERE .

11 – How much does it cost to climb to Mount Ijen?

The entrance fee to Ijen is no more than Rp. 10,000 per person, although there is a difference in entry rates between regular weekdays and weekends or public holidays. There is a difference in costs for Nusantara and International tickets.

Another part that you need to detail the cost is for travel, crossings, accommodation if staying overnight as well as consumption and other important equipment needed to climb to Ijen Crater.

Please find the estimation of the cost for Ijen trip from Bali.

  • Rent a vehicle from Bali to Ijen Crater round trip, including toll fees, parking, drivers and fuel. Rent a minivan type Avansa or trooper around IDR 2,500,000 to IDR 3,000,000

  • Some essential equipment that must be purchased or rented (mask, gloves, flashlight, warm jacket)
  • Rent gas masks start from IDR 50,000
  • Jacket rental at Pal Tuding start from IDR 75,000

12 – Important Equipment To Bring For Climbing Ijen

  • Flashlight (hand lamp or headlamp) or carry both as a spare. Using a headlamp your climbing will be easier because your hands are free to move
  • Gloves, to withstand the cold weather above the Ijen caldera. Gloves also help you well when descending the crater and having to hold on to sharp wood or rocks
  • Warm clothes, you should prepare in advance before leaving. During a trekking trip, you may not need it because body heat helps warm the body, but when you stay at the peak for 1-2 hours, the cold will be more colder.
  • A gas mask, which you need as protection against dense clouds of toxic gases like sulfur dioxide. You can’t last long in the gas without a special mask. The presence of gas depends on the wind which sometimes you can’t avoid.
  • Ordinary protective masks (health masks) and Handy Sanitizers have become an obligation and a requirement to carry, especially when entering the new adaptation era of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Before the adaptation era occurred, some people wore them on trips but there were also those who used them when they started to smell a very strong sulfur smell. But in the new adaptation era, the importance of using health masks is precisely to have additional functions, namely to prevent the transmission of COVID 19, and to take responsibility for maintaining health among visitors to the Ijen crater.

What to Know About This Year’s Tour de France (Which Begins in Italy)

Two previous winners are the leading contenders to win cycling’s most famous race, which, in a rarity, does not end in Paris.

A large pack of bicycle riders heads forward with large crowds watching from both sides.

For three weeks starting Saturday, the world’s best cyclists will do battle in the Tour de France, racing through valleys, hills and high mountains. Though 176 riders will start, most eyes will be on a pair of two-time winners who seek title No. 3.

After more than 2,000 miles and dozens of punishing climbs, will the winner be Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, who took the last two Tours de France but was hurt in a crash this year? Or Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia, the 2020 and 2021 winner ? Or will an unexpected contender jump up and surprise them?

And, wait: Is it really the Tour de France if the race doesn’t finish on the Champs-Élysées? Here’s a primer to read before the race gets underway.

Where will they race?

For the first time, the race will start in Italy , with the opening stage beginning in Florence and winding through the Apennine Mountains to Rimini, a city on the Adriatic coast. It will be more difficult than most opening stages, with several uphill climbs.

After a few days in Italy, the race will enter France, then go counterclockwise around the country, passing through the Alps, the Massif Central, the Pyrenees and then the Alps again.

Who are the favorites?

Vingegaard won last year’s event by an emphatic seven and a half minutes. But after a good start to the 2024 cycling season, he crashed badly in the Tour of the Basque Country in April and spent 12 days in the hospital with a broken collarbone. He is expected to ride in the Tour de France, but there is uncertainty as to what kind of shape he will be in.

As a result, Pogacar, who has been in fine form, is the favorite to win and regain his crown.

Pogacar rode in the Giro d’Italia, or Tour of Italy, in May. Unlike riders in that race who hold back to preserve their strength for the Tour de France, he gave it his all, winning by almost 10 minutes. If Pogacar claims the Tour as well, he will be the first cyclist since Marco Pantani, in 1998, to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.

After the big two, other possible contenders include Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, the 2023 Giro winner, and Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, who won the 2022 Tour of Spain.

Though an individual wins the Tour, his team can help a lot, pacing him in the mountains and blocking attacks from rivals. Last year’s leading team, Jumbo-Visma (now Visma–Lease a Bike) has broken up; Vingegaard is still its leader, but Roglic left to join Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. UAE Team Emirates will support Pogacar with a squad that includes Adam Yates of Britain, a rider with the talent to win the Tour himself; he placed third last year.

Tell me the days that really matter.

The first stage to focus on is July 2, when the riders travel from Italy to France. It includes a climb up the Galibier, one of the Tour’s toughest mountains, and one that still has snow on the side of the roads.

In the midst of a week of flat stages that won’t change the leaderboard much, there is a time trial on July 5 in Burgundy wine country. The riders will race alone against the clock, with no help from teammates, which is why a time trial is known as “the race of truth.”

The real action comes at the end, with five mountain stages. The July 13 stage is particularly notable; it includes a climb up the Tourmalet in the Pyrenees and ends with an uphill — or more accurately, up-mountain — finish that is sure to winnow out any pretenders. Also make note of July 14, 17, 19 and 20 as four more brutal mountain stages where the Tour is likely to be won, or lost.

But even the flat stages, which are usually won by sprinters and seldom affect the overall standings, may have some extra interest this year. The great sprinter Mark Cavendish, 39, has 34 career stage victories and needs one more to break the record he shares with Eddy Merckx, the dominant rider of the 1960s and ’70s.

What’s different this year?

The day after that last mountain stage, the race will end, but not with the traditional ceremonial cruise down the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Instead, the field will hold a time trial to finish the Tour for the first time since 1989. If the race is close, the winner could be decided on that final day, as it was in 1989. That year, the American Greg LeMond snatched the Tour from Laurent Fignon of France in a time trial by a mere eight seconds, still the closest margin in history.

To avoid the Paris Olympics, which open five days later, the time trial will run from Monaco to Nice. It is the first time since 1974 the race has not ended on the Champs-Élysées and the first time ever it has not ended in Paris or its environs.

Remind me what the jerseys mean.

In each stage, whoever is the overall leader wears the yellow jersey to make him easier to spot for TV viewers and the thousands of fans along the route.

But there are other jerseys, too. Finishing near the front in individual stages, especially flat ones, earns points toward the green jersey for best sprinter. Last year’s winner of this jersey was Jasper Philipsen.

The first riders to reach the top of the race’s many mountains earn points toward the garish polka-dot jersey for best climber. The top contenders for yellow are also favored to win this jersey, as is Giulio Ciccone of Italy, who won last year.

Are there any Americans racing?

The days of American favorites like LeMond and Lance Armstrong are over for the time being. Moreover, Sepp Kuss, the American who won the 2023 Tour of Spain, is out because of a Covid-19 infection.

Matteo Jorgenson, 24, on the Visma team, is the top-ranked American. He won this year’s weeklong Paris-Nice race, and some think he can contend for the tour’s title in the future, or maybe, if all goes well, this year.

How can I watch?

Stages generally start around 6 or 7 a.m. Eastern time and last four to five hours. In the United States, Peacock will stream every stage live. Some stages will be shown on NBC and USA as well.

Other broadcasters include ITV and Eurosport (United Kingdom), SBS (Australia), FloBikes (Canada), France Televisions (France), ARD (Germany) and J Sports (Japan).

2024 Tour de France: How to watch, schedule, odds for cycling's top race

tour de ijen

The biggest cycling event of the year - the 111th Tour de France -- kicks off Saturday from Florence, Italy. The 2024 Tour de France's unusual route starts in Italy for the first time ever to honor 100 years since the first Italian victory in the Tour by Ottavio Bottecchia in 1924. The 21 stages will cover more than 2,000 miles from Saturday through July 21. Two-time defending winner Jonas Vingegaard looks to become just the ninth cyclist to win at least three Tour de France races. Last year's runner-up, Tadej Pogačar, is looking to do the same. He won in 2020 and 2021 before finishing second to Vingegaard in 2022 and 2023.
