Located on the beautiful east coast of Sri Lanka , Arugam Bay is home to some of Sri Lanka’s most famous beaches . The area is most famous for being a surfer’s paradise, but there are also plenty of other great things to do in and around Arugam Bay!

With its white-sand beaches, nearby safari parks and ancient temples, Arugam Bay is a part of Sri Lanka that I really love. This is both a great place to chill and relax as well as to explore the surroundings.

This post features the best places to visit in Arugam Bay as well as how to get there, the best time to visit and other useful information.

So, let’s dive straight into it, here are the best things to do on a visit to Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka .

Best Things to Do in Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka

1. go surfing.

One of the most popular things to do in Arugam Bay is surfing, so it had to be number 1 on this list.

The area is packed with surf shops offering lessons and surfboards for hire. The bay is argued to be one of the best surfing spots in Sri Lanka and it attracts surfers from all over the world. It’s good to know that this is a great place for both amateurs as well as professional surfers.

Some of Arugam Bay’s most popular surf spots are Main Point , Whiskey Point , Peanut Farm , Pottuvil Point and Elephant Rock .

So if you’re up for an adventure in Sri Lanka , going surfing in Arugam Bay is a great thing to do!

Note that if you want to go surfing, it’s best to visit Arugam Bay between June and August. At this time of the year, you will be able to catch the best waves.

2. Visit Muhudu Maha Viharaya

This ancient Buddhist temple was constructed over 2,000 years ago by King Kavantissa of Ruhuna, and it’s steeped in history. It’s often called the “Temple by the Sea”, and it can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby beach .

According to the legend, Viharamaha Devi, the daughter of King Kelanitissa, sacrificed herself to the sea to appease the gods who were angry at her father for punishing an innocent monk. The waves of the ocean then pushed the princess ashore near the Muhuda Maha Viharaya temple. This is where she encountered King Kavantissa, whom she would later marry.

The Muhudu Maha Viharaya Temple is a very important site for Buddhists. One of the things I loved the most about the place was the life-sized statues of the Buddha leading to the pagoda.

3. Climb Elephant Rock

Not only is Elephant Rock a popular surfing spot, but it’s also the perfect place to watch the sunrise or sunset. This rock is located on the southernmost spot of Arugam Bay Beach, and can easily be reached either by walking or by tuk-tuk.

While it’s okay to swim and surf in the sea, don’t swim in the lagoon near Elephant Rock because there are crocodiles there.

I didn’t visit Elephant Rock myself, unfortunately, so it’s something I will have to come back for!

4. See the fishermen

Fishing has been a big part of the economy of Arugam Bay and its surroundings for many years. If you visit Pottuvil Beach in the morning, you will find fishermen pulling their nets onto the beach. The nets are attached to hundreds of meters of rope and it takes around two hours to pull them out of the ocean.

You’ll also find plenty of colourful fishing boats adorning Arugam Bay Beach . If you visit in the morning, you will see how the fishermen sort their catch of fish before selling it.

5. Go on a safari in Kumana National Park (Yala East)

Kumana National Park is located on the east of the more popular Yala National Park, and it’s just 30 km (18.6 mi) from Arugam Bay. Chances are that you will encounter a lot of wildlife here even before entering the park’s gates!

Not only is Kumana National Park a great place to spot wildlife, but the landscapes here are beautiful as well. During our safari, we spotted elephants , buffaloes , crocodiles , peacocks , monkeys , warthogs , mongoose , turtles , deer , and even the rare and endangered black-necked stork . But there’s much more wildlife here, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a sloth bear or a leopard !

Having visited both Yala and Kumana National Park, I have to say I preferred Kumana by far. Yala National Park is more touristy and it’s packed with jeeps, whereas Kumana National Park is a calm place with equally beautiful landscapes and many animals.

6. Go on a lagoon safari in Pottuvil

One of the most popular things to do in Arugam Bay is going on a lagoon safari in Pottuvil. This is a canoe ride along the lagoon where you will be able to observe many species of animals and birds. Some of the animals you can spot here are crocodiles , (bathing) elephants , buffaloes , monkeys and many species of birds .

The Pottuvil Lagoon is located 7 km (4.3 mi) from Arugam Bay and it’s easy to reach by tuk-tuk.

7. Drink fresh juice

You simply cannot go to Sri Lanka and not try the delicious fresh juice – and Arugam Bay is packed with juice bars.

It’s fun to see how the juice is made and some juice bars also offer a mix of coconut and lime juice, which is truly delicious (and quite refreshing too).

8. Visit the Kudumbigala Monastery

The Kudumbigala Monastery is a 45-minute tuk-tuk drive from Arugam Bay. This is a place you will love if you’re a history buff!

It’s estimated that this Buddhist monastery was built in 246 BC, during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. It was used by monks who wanted to escape the city and follow a path to enlightenment.

Don’t forget to explore the nearby trails and caves, and climb to the peak next to the monastery for a beautiful view of the surroundings when you’re there.

The climb to the highest viewpoint takes approximately 1,5 hours. So the best time to do this is in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. You will be rewarded with a beautiful view over the jungle, the rocks and the coastline once you reach it.

On the way to this monastery, you will pass Panama Road (which is also on the way to Kumana National Park). Here, you will have a good chance to spot elephants, crocodiles and monkeys!

9. Join a cooking class

For foodies, one of the best Sri Lankan bucket list experiences is to join a cooking class.

During one of these, you will learn how to make some of Sri Lanka’s most famous traditional dishes like dahl, coconut sambal, curries and more.

The best part is that after finishing the cooking class, you will be able to make your favourite dishes when you’re back home!

10. Check out the Arugam Bay nightlife scene

Another thing Arugam Bay is known for is its party scene. If you’re visiting during the high season (from June to September), there will be plenty of beach parties with lots of music and dancing.

One of the most popular beach parties in Arugam Bay is Mambo’s Saturday Nights . It’s free for tourists, so make sure not to miss it if partying is your thing.

11. Chill by the beach or pool

It’s important to rest from time to time too, especially after visiting so many new things, and Arugam Bay is a great place to do so.

Head to the beach or pool to swim, chill, get a coconut, read a book or do absolutely nothing and reload your batteries.

While you can lay down your towel on the sand, there are also beach bars where you can rent a sunbed and enjoy some snacks and drinks.

12. Pamper yourself

Speaking of relaxing – Arugam Bay is also full of places where you can pamper yourself a bit.

You can go to an Ayurveda treatment centre for a traditional massage, for example. Or head to one of the many places where they offer yoga classes – your body will thank you later!

Best time to Visit Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with warm temperatures all year round. There are, however, two monsoon seasons on the island. On the East Coast, where Arugam Bay is located, the monsoon season runs from November to January, so you might want to avoid this period.

The best time to visit Arugam Bay, if you want to go surfing, is from May to September . This is also the high season and the best time to go snorkelling and diving.

However, if snorkelling and diving are not activities that you’re interested in, you can visit Arugam Bay between February and May as well. I visited the bay at the beginning of March, and the weather was great! I went snorkelling too, but unfortunately, the visibility wasn’t very good.

How to Get to Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is located on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, about 4 km (2.5 mi) south of Pottuvil. To get there, you will have to head to this little town first. You can do this by:

Public bus : Taking the public bus to Pottuvil followed by a tuk-tuk ride to Arugam Bay is the cheapest way to get there. It takes at least 8 hours from Colombo and 5 hours from Ella .
Private car : Although this is also the most expensive option, hiring a driver or renting a car is the easiest and fastest way to get there.
Tuk-tuk : It’s possible to rent a tuk-tuk and drive it yourself. So if you’re up for an adventure and have enough time (since tuk-tuks only drive around 40 km/h), this is quite a fun way to go to Arugam Bay!

How to Get Around Arugam Bay

Once you’re in Arugam Bay, you can get around by:

Tuk-tuk : Tuk-tuks can be found nearly everywhere in Sri Lanka, and Arugam Bay is no different. Hopping on of these is the most popular way to get around the area.
Scooter : The roads are good in the area and renting a scooter is not too expensive. This is probably the best way to get around if you want to have more flexibility.
Private transport : A private car can easily be arranged and this is probably the most comfortable way to get around, but it’s also the most expensive one.

Jetwing Surf ( ⭐ 7.9/10): I stayed at the beautiful and eco-friendly Jetwing Surf Hotel, which is located in Pottuvil. This is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a luxury resort. The rooms in the huts are magnificent, and wait until you see the bathroom! On top of that, the food at Jetwing Surf is delicious and there’s a beautiful pool.
Beach Cab Resort ( ⭐ 9.3/10): This hotel with an on-site restaurant is just 70 m (230 ft) from Arugam Bay Surf Point, which makes it the perfect place if you want to go surfing. On top of that, the rooms are spacious and clean and they have AC.
Garden Cottage ArugamBay ( ⭐ 8.2/10): If you’re on a budget, Garden Cottage is a great choice. This hotel is 450 m (1,476 ft) from Arugam Bay Beach and it offers nice and clean rooms and an onsite restaurant.

Arugam Bay: A Guide to Sri Lanka’s Surfing Paradise

Arugam Bay is a beautiful crescent-shaped sandy beach located along Sri Lanka’s Eastern Coast. This famous surf spot has a super laid back vibe that draws in surfers, yogis and visitors from all over the world. A-Bay (affectionately referred to by the locals) is a great place to chill out for a few days and soak up the sun.

There are a ton of things to do in and around A-Bay. However, we were only there for a few days so we had to maximize our time. Here some of my favorite ways to spend a few days on this side of Sri Lanka.

Top Things to Do & See in Arugam Bay

1. give surfing a try.

These beaches are well known for their killer waves, so why not take a board out for a spin! There are many places around Arugam Bay where you can rent a board for a fairly inexpensive rate. Watch or join in on the surfing that Arugam Bay is known for.

2. Enjoy the Beaches of Arugam Bay

Spend your days lazily lounging on the beautiful beaches of A- Bay. We let the hours slip away as we relaxed amongst the sandy shore, soaking up the warm summer sun and breathing in the intoxicating scent of salty sea air.

You’ll see a number of stray dogs that call these beaches home and they like to enjoy laying at the beach just as much as the humans. And don’t worry, they won’t bother you.

3. Wander the Town and Check Out the Local Shops

A-Bay’s main street is bustling with artisan shops and local restaurants that are dishing up deliciously cheap entrees . As we were strolling through the streets we stumbled upon a tiny shop where a Sri Lankan man was stitching up custom-made bathing suits.

Just up the street I discovered a beautiful handmade hammock that I purchased for only 2700 LKR ($17)! So be sure to take some time while you’re in Arugam Bay to admire some of the local goods, you never know what you’ll find!

4. Go on a Safari to Kumana National Park

The safari to Kumana National Park was arranged through our hotel and cost 5000 LKR per person ($31). This particular tour through Yala East lasted from 1pm to 7pm. There were 4 other people who joined our safari and I’m sure that helped lower the cost had it been a private trip. We headed out of town and one hour later we entered the park where we immediately had our first elephant sighting of the trip.

I did appreciate that the guides respect the animals and don’t detour from the well worn paths just to get a closer look. This park was also not very crowded and busy with tourists or many other safari jeeps so it made the experience much more enjoyable.

How to Get to Arugam Bay From Ella

Departing from Ella we first stopped at the Monaragala bus station. After arriving, we asked around and learned that we needed to take another bus that would bring us to Pottuvil. From there we would then have to take a tuk tuk to our guesthouse. Upon arrival in Pottuvil we quickly found the tuk tuk waiting area. All the drivers argued back and forth offering us their “last price” so we ended up getting a ride for pretty cheap.

We stayed at the lovely Garden Beach Hotel. Here, we each had our own basic but super cozy room complete with a private bathroom and a/c. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Additionally, the location was perfect, right off the main street next to the beach.

During our last night, the owner and his staff were having a big bbq for the guests for dinner. The dinner consisted of chicken, white snapper, pumpkin, potato, fresh cabbage salad, rice and curry. It was very delicious and I ordered another avocado juice (because I may be slightly obsessed) for dinner.

The breakfast (not included, but well worth it) is very hearty and delicious. One morning I had a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, muesli and honey with an avocado lassi.

Arugam Bay: Guide to Sri Lanka’s East Coast Gem

Arugam Bay provides golden sand , the best surfing in Sri Lanka, beautiful sunsets , beach-side accommodation , wild elephants roaming around , all round good vibes and most significantly, a desire to stay longer than intended . It is such a dreamy little spot and you can easily find yourself caught up in the laid-back lifestyle on offer.

The east coast beaches, such as Arugam Bay, are typically less popular than those of the south. Certainly not for a lack of natural beauty though! The main reason for this is that they are simply more off the beaten track, aka more isolated from the main ‘hot’ spots around the country. Doesn’t that make it more tempting to visit though? So, if time permits, definitely add in a stop at Arugam Bay, or even better, MAKE your time permit it!

How to get to Arugam Bay?

Arugam Bay is the perfect spot to simultaneously be active and simply chill out. Or even if you’re just needing to recharge your travel life batteries from the many hours on trains and buses that comes with travelling around, this is the BEST place to do so.

As with most travel in Sri Lanka, bus is your go to. Even then, the bus doesn’t take you all the way there, but rather to nearby Pottuvil from where it is a 5km tuktuk tide.

There are three best options of putting Arugam Bay on your itinerary (before/after as it depends which way you are travelling around the country):

Before/after Ella
Before/after Yulara National Park
Before/after the beaches of the south, such as Mirissa.

My trip went Ella – Arugam Bay – Mirissa (we skipped out Yulara National Park). It took two busses to get from Ella to Pottuvil, then as noted we were required to take a tuktuk into Arugam Bay itself. So, it is a bit of a trek (wherever you are coming from!), but you soon forget about the long, crammed, sweaty journey thanks to the gem of the destination that makes it worth it.

There is no shortage of accommodation choices in Arugam Bay, covering every budget.

Being on a ‘backpacker’ trip, good prices and good vibes were our accommodation goals, and we successfully found this at Beach Hut, Arugam Bay .

The little beach cabanas where you sleep are nice. I mean, they aren’t particularly spectacular, this is a budget accommodation after all, but we got a little cabana to sleep three of us. There were two floors (okay more like two rooms on top of the other (plus bathroom)) – a double bed upstairs and and single bed below with the bathroom adjoint.

Beach Hut accommodation, Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

The location is 10/10 (this is probably true for all accommodation here though – beach-side vibes!). Beach Hut is right at the beach, well okay it is about a 200m walk down a lane until you feel the sand amongst your toes. I got so used to not even wearing clothes – swimwear and a towel and you are good to go! What a dream.

There is a sneaky little spot ON the beach that belongs to the accommodation . This soon became a favourite. It is home to a few cabanas where I guess you get to stay if you are lucky and wish for the sound of the waves as you sleep. The hammocks and wooden sun loungers make this the perfect spot to chill out at, find a bit of shade, have some respite from the burning hot sand under your feet. Or, you know, to dance around and be crazy as my travel mates and I liked to do in this spot (there was no one around most of the time – so tranquil, until we ruined the tranquility of course!).

The staff are super friendly , and the restaurant is another highlight , providing excellent food throughout the day. We did leave the accommodation for food on several occasion, but there were plenty of times we had no need to, and gave in to the delicious food on offer at the on-site restaurant. They do a special Sri Lankan dish each night to mix things up too, so it’s not always the same thing. You don’t need to stay at the accommodation to visit the restaurant. It is worth checking out for some delicious, cheap eats even if you don’t choose to stay here.

– Arugam Bay Beach

Of course you must visit Arugam Bay Beach, I mean, the beach is what a trip to this stunning crescent shaped coastline is all about.

Palm trees border the beautiful beach, while the ocean acts as a heated bath, although a rather ferocious one at times. Remember, Arugam Bay is a surf spot, meaning it is known for its strong waves . Be careful when swimming!

The long half-moon beach is both a hive of activity and a deserted, untouched beauty. The further north, the more tranquil it becomes. Locals and visitors alike are found in abundance at the southern end – bay-front bars and restaurants are a big draw, while many fishing boats are docked on the sand, workers coming and going.

The ocean-side bars and restaurants , equipped with tables and chairs as well as sun loungers out on the sand, shade available if needed, make for the most relaxing and comfortable of beach days . Drinks on the beach never tasted so good, traditional Sri Lankan and western food available for order when the hunger strikes.

Of course, beautiful coastal sunsets are also on offer from Arugam Bay Beach. Be sure not to miss one of those!

Remember I mentioned Arugam Bay is the best surf spot in Sri Lanka ?

Well, surfing is therefore a must do activity when visiting this area.

Whether looking to simply hire a board and take to the waves on your own accord, or learn the basics with the help of some lessons, Arugam Bay caters for you. Along the main strip you will find surf schools from where you can organise everything, but be sure to ask around for the best deals. When organising lessons, this includes the boards and tuktuk to get to the surf spot and back, so there is no stress about needing to sort things out separately.

There are various surf breaks along the immediate coastal area where you can catch some waves, whatever your skill level.

So, as it wouldn’t feel right to not partake in the most popular activity around I soon found myself at one of Arugam Bay’s top surf spots – Whiskey Point . I never would have discovered this gem had it not been for signing up for surf lessons, so for that alone it was worth it! This is an excellent surf spot for beginners (okay this wasn’t actually my fist time surfing but you know, still a complete novice).

Surfing was a lot of fun, despite my predominantly failing to catch waves efforts! We took a lesson with just two of us, so it was pretty intimate – the best way to learn. The great thing about this spot was we didn’t even have to paddle out too far as he waves broke pretty close to shore. This is such a great active start to the morning living the ultimate sun, sea, sand lifestyle that Arugam Bay is known for. Who cares if you’ve not got the skills, surfing really is a must do in Arugam Bay!

Even if you don’t fancy surfing, Whiskey Point would still be worth heading to as it is a beautiful area.

Elephant Rock point is a pretty secluded spot in Arugam Bay which is well worth a visit.

I mean, everyone loves a good sunset, right?

Well, Elephant Rock Point may be popular as a top surf area, but more than that, it is the must visit sunset spot in Arugam Bay.

It is situated south of Arugam Bay centre, and to get there you must take a tuktuk (nothing new there!). It is around a twenty minute drive and you may even see some elephants en route.

Elephant Rock Point, as the name would suggest, is home to Elephant Rock. So, of course, prepare to climb , as it is from the summit that you will want to watch the sun descend .

The short climb to the top of the rock provides panoramic views over this unspoilt coastal area. Looking over the stretch of sand, surfers catching waves, fishermen working, the beach separated from the lagoon by a sandbank, with the surrounding greenery amplifying the beauty of the area as the colours change with the fading of the sun, is simply a sight that must be seen.

Note: The lagoon and surrounding rivers are home to crocodiles. Be aware and DO NOT swim there.

When I visited, the sunset itself, highly masked by clouds, wasn’t particularly spectacular, but it was breathtaking nonetheless. It was also pretty quiet (and a little eerie to be honest – there was a nationwide curfew in place), but it felt a little like an unknown spot that we were lucky enough to encounter.

If you can’t make it for sunset, it is still well worth a visit during the day. Or even better, head earlier for a stroll along the beach, or a surf, and then climb the rock for sunset.

Note: As it is secluded, make sure you have a way to leave again – it’s not a spot from where to flag down tuktuks, unless you get yourself back to the main road. Visiting for sunset, we had our tuktuk driver wait for us to climb the rock, watch the sunset and descend again. You do not want to be getting stranded when darkness falls!

These are just a few of the ways you can spend your time here. If you’re into yoga, this is your place too – there are ample yoga classes on offer.

So, whether you have two days or a week to spare, this is your go to place. We ended up spending 6 days in Arugam Bay, which was longer than intended, and it did not feel like too long. It is such a welcoming place and you easily get so accustomed to the way of living here.

Arugam Bay really is a gem on the east coast which is well worth a visit.

27 AMAZING THINGS TO DO IN ARUGAM BAY, SRI LANKA

Arugam Bay is hands down my favorite place in all of Sri Lanka! So it’s good you’re reading this because I’ve got the lowdown on the best things to do in Arugam Bay. During my first visit to the country, I stayed there for ten days and fell in love with its laid-back atmosphere.

It’s a small town, twenty minutes from Pottuvil Point, with just one main street of shops, restaurants, and surfboard rentals. That’s not all that makes it so charming. People come for the great beaches , surfing, and legendary beach parties but also stay for the fantastic A-Bay vibe .

I’ll go over some of my favorite Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka hotels & accommodation options (like the legendary Beach Hut), the Sri Lanka surf places nearby, and the Arugam Bay Beach parties.

WHAT TO DO IN ARUGAM BAY – SURF SHOPS, YOGA CLASSES, AND MORE

Without further adieu… these are my top things to do in Arugam Bay. Just be careful; if you’re planning to visit, you might stay much longer than expected.

1) ARUGAM BAY SURFING

Alright, let’s start with the really obvious one. Arugam Bay is one of the world’s top surfing destinations, so if you go all the way out there and don’t at least try to go surfing — then you’ve made a colossal mistake.

There are three main surf spots to choose from:

Main Point: This is the surf spot located in Arugam Bay. Every morning you’ll see dozens of surfers catching big waves. This is recommended more for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Whisky Point (Whiskey Point): This famous surf spot is about a 15-minute drive from Arugam Bay. It’s also a beautiful beach and can provide some excellent waves for beginner surfers. You’ll also notice heaps of people getting surfing lessons.
Peanut Farm: About 25 minutes from Arugam Bay is this fantastic tucked-away beach/surf spot. It’s trendy and comes highly recommended.

Tuk-Tuk rentals are under $20 (Rs6,125) a day and can be used to travel to Whisky Point (Whiskey Point), Peanut Farm Beach, or pretty much anywhere in this surf town.

2) ATTEND YOGA CLASSES

I feel like surfing destinations always seem to be yoga destinations as well, and Arugam Bay is no exception. When you’re walking up and down the main street, you’ll see that there are tons of yoga places. It’s a great way to start the day, get some exercise, and relax.

I joined a couple of classes at the Stardust Beach Hotel on my first visit and had a great session. It’s definitely worth checking out, and it’s also a nice place to stay if you’re looking for a nice hotel.

3) RENT A MOTO & EXPLORE

This is one of my favorite things to do while traveling around Asia. I love the feeling you get when you’re exploring on a scooter. The roads around Arugam Bay are excellent, and there’s some really beautiful stuff to see. My advice? Just drive down Panama & Kumana National Park.

4) HAVE FUN AT THE BEACH YOUR WAY

Arugam Bay is a beautiful, long beach that is perfect just to chill all day. Grab a book, a fresh coconut, and a towel — you’re not going to want to move. Take a dip in the ocean, play some beach volleyball, or just work on your tan.

5) EXPLORE PANAMA TANK

Driving through the Panama Tank on a moto is an absolute must. It’s a short 15–20 minute ride from Arugam Bay, with basically just one path to drive along and explore. The landscape is stunning and perfect for taking photos, and you’ll probably see a few crocodiles.

6) KUMANA NATIONAL PARK

You’ll see signs all over Arugam Bay for booking a safari at Kumana National Park . This is in Yala East, so it’s definitely recommended if you haven’t done any safaris in Sri Lanka. You’ll see heaps of wild elephants, and if you’re lucky can spot a leopard or water buffalo.

Sri Lanka is known for having beautiful and great safari experiences, so definitely look into it. It should cost around $76–$85 (Rs23,271–Rs26,027).

7) WHISKY POINT FRIDAY NIGHTS

Arugam Bay is also the main party destination in Sri Lanka, and Friday nights at Whisky Point shouldn’t be missed. You’ll meet beautiful people at this beautiful location, coupled with great music and lots of dancing. Once the arrack starts pouring, you’ll be glad you went.

8) MAMBO’S SATURDAY NIGHTS

The legendary weekly beach party at Mambos’ is an absolute must for anyone visiting Arugam Bay. It’s honestly so much fun and was one of the highlights of my time in the country. I’ve been three different times now, and each time was a solid night.

The music basically doesn’t stop until everyone leaves, and the hardcore party people always make it to the sunrise. I found the music here to be really groovy deep/tech-house, and the party was always bumping.

9) DINNERS AT BEACH HUT – A LOVELY BOUTIQUE GUESTHOUSE

The Beach Hut is hands down my favorite place to stay in Arugam Bay, but if you’re not sleeping there — at least pop on over for the daily dinner specials. They are delicious and extremely cheap. I’m talking around $5 (Rs1,531) for a decent-sized meal. If you’re keen on a fish-BBQ night, then you should definitely do it.

It’s also a great place to meet other travelers, as everyone staying there pretty much has dinner together.

10) ELEPHANT ROCK FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE ARUGAM BAY SUNSET

Keen to get epic views like no place else? I recommend spending time in Arugam Bay visiting places like Elephant Rock. It’s a rock located on the left-hand side of the bay, which, once climbed, provides absolutely incredible views.

Getting your own tuk-tuk ride to Elephant Rock is recommended, as it can be hard to find if you’re traveling alone. Tuk-tuk drivers will take you as far as they possibly can and give you directions from there. While you should expect a bit of a climb, the reward from Elephant Rock is so worth it.

I recommend climbing Elephant Rock in the early evening and taking a picnic basket with you. This way, you can enjoy snacks and sundowners while you watch the sun setting.

11) KUDUMBIGALA MONASTERY

This Buddhist temple is one of the best places to visit near Arugam Bay. It’s about 18 miles from the bay and takes around 45 minutes to reach the temple if you travel via your own tuk-tuk. Riding with tuk-tuk drivers is recommended as it adds greatly to the adventure, giving you a more authentic experience.

The monastery doesn’t have an entry fee, so you’ll only have to worry about paying for the tuk-tuk ride. You can expect to pay around $9.80 (Rs3,000) for a round trip.

Kudumbigala Monastery is steeped in history, which you’ll get the chance to learn about during this trip. There are also plenty of trails and caves around its compound that are worth exploring.

If you’re up for a little exercise, there’s a great peak to climb right by the monastery. Once you get to the top, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the coastline and your luscious green surroundings.

12) POTTUVIL LAGOON BOAT TRIP

Pottuvil Lagoon is a coastal lagoon that is home to a variety of wonderful wildlife. The lagoon is shrouded in mangrove trees and is a sight to behold. If you’re looking for one of the fun yet peaceful Arugam Bay things to do, I recommend taking a trip on one of the many canoes that glide through the water.

As well as allowing you to experience the beauty of the nature that surrounds you, taking these boats is an eco-friendly tour option. If you’re looking for one of the best places to visit in Arugam Bay, this has got to be high on your list.

Among other things, you’ll get the chance to see crocodiles lazing in the sun, water monitors climbing the trees, and freshwater snakes swimming through the waters. Wildlife doesn’t get much more thrilling than that.

13) PEANUT FARM BEACH

Peanut Farm is a beach just a 15-minute drive from Arugam Bay and it provides a peaceful escape. The gentle waves make it a great place to learn to surf, and the lack of crowds offers a reprieve from the busyness of Arugam Bay.

Enjoy refreshing smoothie bowls or snacks from the beach cafe while you lounge around and pet the many friendly dogs that live there.

14) ATTERIYA CHILL

Although Arugam Bay nightlife is exciting and fun-filled, there are other options available if you’re not much of a party animal. Atteriya CHILL is the perfect place to knock back a few drinks without going too wild.

Atteriya CHILL is located right on the beachfront and offers you everything you need for a relaxing stay. Here, you can enjoy the soothing sounds of the waves while sipping your favorite cocktail at the on-site bar.

The accommodation is 328 feet from Arugam Bay Beach and boasts a variety of amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

15) SHOP FOR LESS ON ARUGAM BAY MAIN STREET

Thinking of where else to go in Arugam Bay and what to do? Shop to your heart’s content on the main street. Walking down this bustling street, you’ll see a variety of stores selling wonderful souvenirs and clothing for great prices. You can even get your hands on things like custom-made bikinis (that can be resized to your preference). Some of them retail for as low as $55 (Rs16,620) and are of great quality.

Apart from Arugam Bay’s custom clothing, you’ll get a bunch of other things on the cheap too. Spending the day window shopping and looking for some great bargains can be a fun little excursion and give you something unique to take home with you.

16) RENT A TUK-TUK

Is Arugam Bay worth visiting without hiring a tuk-tuk? Duh, renting a tuk-tuk is simply a must-do in Sri Lanka.

Renting a tuk-tuk in Arugam Bay is a great way to dictate your own adventure and find loads of hidden gems along the way. It also adds to the richness of your Sri Lankan adventure. Luckily, Arugam Bay has decently-kept roads, and the traffic is mild in comparison to many of the other places in Sri Lanka.

Renting a tuk-tuk is relatively cheap, especially if you’re traveling with friends. It’s important to note that you’re not allowed to travel with a surfboard on your scooter in Arugam Bay. So, if you plan on visiting the surf spots, hiring a tuk-tuk is a much better option.

This can be especially fun if you’re traveling to some of the best beaches in Sri Lanka with your friends.

17) SRI LANKAN COOKING CLASSES

While you’re in Sri Lanka, do as the Sri Lankans do. Take a cooking class to learn traditional Sri Lankan cooking methods and how to make some of their most delicious dishes. This is an especially exciting activity for foodies who’ve enjoyed the local street food.

Learn to cook curries and coconut sambal, along with a whole host of other Sri Lankan meals. Ecowave hosts great cooking classes near the main road in Arugam Bay, but there are many other places holding these activities daily.

If you don’t want to take a formal class, there are many restaurants and hotels in Arugam Bay that will arrange this activity for you for a small fee. This often ends up working out a little cheaper than taking a formal cooking class.

You’ll also get to choose which meal you want to learn to make, so you can recreate your favorite dishes when you’re back home.

18) LAHUGALA NATIONAL PARK

Lahugala National Park is just 12.5 miles from Arugam Bay and happens to be one of the smallest national parks in Sri Lanka. Although the park is small in size, it’s an important conservation area for elephants as well as indigenous birds.

Most of the national park consists of dry evergreen forests and acts as a feeding ground for the herd of elephants. This herd is 150-strong and is the main reason the park attracts visitors. Try to visit the park during sunset, as this is when the elephants visit the watering hole.

Other animals that you’ll be lucky to see in Lahugala National Park include jackal, wild cat, sloth bear, wild boar, leopard, and deer.

19) CATCH THE SUNRISE

Being a bay on the east coast, watching the sunrise is not only easy, but it’s also magnificent. Head to the beautiful Arugam beach just before sunrise so you can have a little time to find the right viewing spot.

Be sure to take your camera as the golden rays are sure to put on a spectacular show as they peep over the horizon. Waking up early in the morning will never be more worthwhile than in this epic location.

20) WATCH THE SUNSET – THE PERFECT WAY TO END YOUR DAY

Because the bay faces east, the sunrises are notably more spectacular than the sunsets. However, this doesn’t mean you should write off watching the sun setting over the horizon. There are still some wonderful spots that allow you to witness nature’s favorite evening event.

Some of the best places to watch the sunset in Arugam Bay are Elephant Rock, Mambo’s, and Pottuvil Bridge. The bridge is an easy walk from Arugam and provides panoramic views over the Pottuvil Lagoon. You’ll likely be joined by a group of local fishermen eager to enjoy the sunset with you.

21) ENJOY A MASSAGE OR AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

Travelling Southeast Asia on a budget is doable, and this affordability applies to its beauty industry too. The region is known for its reasonably priced beauty treatments as well as its unique and ancient Eastern treatments. Sri Lanka is no different, offering a myriad of options when it comes to beauty as well as Ayurveda.

Arugam Bay Ayurveda Treatment Centre is a great place to go for a massage or alternatively treat an ailment that you’re currently struggling with. There truly is something special about this ancient Eastern medicine , and its healing powers should be put to the test during your stay in Arugam Bay.

If you’re opting for a longer stay, then taking an entire week off for Ayurvedic treatment is also an option.

22) RELAX BY THE POOL

A holiday is not complete without ample chill-out time. Head to one of the many resorts for a day spent by the pool, cocktail in hand. One of the best resorts to do this is Rocco’s , where you can lounge by the pool, located right on the beachfront.

Visiting a resort for the day also provides you with a luxury experience without the great cost that comes with staying there. Although, if your budget does allow it, staying at a resort such as Rocco’s does enhance your Arugam Bay experience.

23) VIEW THE COLORFUL BOATS

Being a small fishing village, Arugam Bay is constantly dotted with colorful fishing boats along the main beach. The best time to go see them is in the early morning when they’re just setting out. This is also a great time to snap a picture of the boats with the sun rising behind them.

The fishermen are often open to taking tourists on board when there is space, so if you’re up for a fishing experience, just ask them nicely.

Alternatively, you can visit in the afternoon when the fishermen are coming home from their fishing expeditions. This can provide ample entertainment for the afternoon as you watch the fishermen counting their catch.

24) MARVEL AT MUHUDU MAHA VIHARA

Muhudu Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple that was built almost 2000 years ago. It’s situated right near the beach and currently features the remains of ancient stupas and statues. These ruins are a great place to explore and learn about the history of Buddhism.

It’s also a wonderful place to take photos, especially during the golden hours. Kill two birds with one stone and visit the beach after exploring the remains of the temple.

25) DINE AT LEAF & VINE NEAR POTTUVIL POINT

This cozy restaurant offers you a delicious mix of flavors and an inviting ambiance. Leaf & Vine serves up a wide array of mouthwatering Asian cuisine (like dumplings and gyozas) crafted with fresh, local ingredients — even fish fresh from the sea.

The atmosphere at Leaf & Vine is laid-back and welcoming, making it ideal for meeting new people or hanging out with fellow solo travelers.

While here, why not try out the enviable experience of savoring their medium rare tuna steak while taking in stunning views from the terrace?

26) BUY FRESH FISH

It’s not often that you get to buy fish straight out of the ocean, as fresh as it comes. But in Arugam Bay, you’re able to buy fish along the main road that’s come straight off the fishing boats. Take this opportunity to throw a fish on the BBQ and cook up something a little different.

If you don’t feel like cooking it yourself, there are plenty of stalls that will cook it up for you. You can expect to pay $5–$10 (Rs1,531–Rs3,062) for a meal that’s served with either chips or rice.

If the thought of fresh fish isn’t enough to entice you, then the smell of smoking BBQs sure will. Stop by the main road for your portion of some of the best street food in Sri Lanka. It simply doesn’t get fresher or better than that.

27) ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

Alright, so I probably shouldn’t list this as a thing to do because it’s simply the exact opposite.

But Arugam Bay is the perfect destination to lose track of time and fall into the traveling mentality of many tourists.

Do some people-watching while lying on a beach chair during the high season. Or, watch fellow travelers fall off boards during surf lessons.

Lie in a hammock, read, take naps on the beach, and enjoy the simplicity of A-Bay. Days turn into weeks in Arugam Bay — seriously. It can be really hard to leave this slice of paradise.

Hi, did you go to Trincomalee aswell or just Arugam bay? I’m trying to decide between both or whether to do both?

Hey, love your website. Just wondering, what time of year did you go? Me and a friend were planning on going over December but not sure as I heard there wasn’t many tourists around at that time. We are looking for a party destination to go over december, any advice would be appreciated.

I’ve been in Arugam Bay around July and September. I’m not too sure about December. but I bet Abay would be a damn good time. It’s kind of the only party destination in all of Sri Lanka. If party was the main focus, I’d go to many other places in Southeast Asia like THailand or Indonesia.

We went to weligama great place to learn how to surf great surf camp elsewhere run by an Aussie and an Irish dude surf season Sept to April but open all year round great beaches and lots of places to eat and do yoga even on a paddleboard check out elsewhere surf camp Sri Lanka

Hi, I want to visit arum bay in the middle of June. I will be with my kids (3-5 years old). Is there a spot where they can swim safely?

Trincomalee, if you prefer more up-class accommodation, swimming and snorkeling, serene beaches with powdery sand, more laid-back times…A-bay is more for surfing, outdoor activities, more parties, safaris nearby, sight-seeing, affordable accommodation, cheaper eating options etc. I would edge A-bay over trinco! but both are very nice places to visit. As Sri Lankan , December and January are the party months along july and Auguest in the island..Dec 24 to Jan 1st week are the most peak party dates any beach spot…Arugambay is more remote but highly reccomanded for relaxing & beach parties..It doesn’t have mass crowd like Thaliand or Bali..

7 Awesome things to do in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka’s surfer paradise (2022 update)

Nestled on the east coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is a vibrant coastal town that is known for many things, including its strikingly beautiful palm-lined beaches, bustling surfing scene and laid back atmosphere.

However, since Arugam Bay is situated a little off the traditional Sri Lanka route, this underrated gem is often skipped by travellers and backpackers alike. Despite that, I’m of the firm belief that travelling to Arugam Bay will be worth extra effort.

Arugam Bay sums up much of what makes Sri Lanka so popular – it’s a tropical beach village with loads of interesting highlights nearby; the fascinating Kudumbigala Monastery, scenic Elephant Rock and the adventurous Kumana National Park to name but a few.

Of course, there are many other unbelievable places to explore within Sri Lanka, yet there’s just something magical about this sleepy fishing village on Sri Lanka’s relatively untouched east coast.

In this guide, I’ll cover all the best things to do in Arugam Bay, as well as first-hand advice on where to stay, when to visit and how to get there.

Where to stay in Arugam Bay

Since Arugam Bay is one of Sri Lanka’s leading surfing destinations, you’ll have no issue finding yourself good accommodation, with plenty of options to suit all sorts of budget and travel styles.

Whether you’re after a cheap stay in a hostel, a luxurious boutique hotel, or something in between, I’m pretty sure you’ll find something that suits your needs.

To help you sort out your stay, I’ve listed my personal recommendations:

Riva del Sole Guest House | Set within the main street of Arugam Bay, Riva del Sole Guest House is an excellent option for those on a budget. This budget-friendly guest house has spacious rooms with comfortable double beds, air-conditioning and a large private bathroom with a rain shower. Doubles at only €35,- a night make this hotel one of the best options in Arugam Bay.

The Spice Trail | Situated both close to the beach and the main street, The Spice Trail is one of the best picks in Arugam Bay, with stylish double rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and an extensive sun terrace. All bookings come with an excellent breakfast too, which makes it a great value for the money.

Jetwing Surf | If your looking for an absolute splurge, look no further, Jetwing Surf is an excellent luxury resort situated directly at Arugam Bay’s main beach. With its spacious cabana-style rooms, large comfortable beds, and a large swimming pool in a prime location, Jetwing Surf is the number one choice for those after luxury and comfort. 8 INCREDIBLE THINGS TO DO IN ARUGAM BAY, SRI LANKA

1 | learn to surf in arugam bay.

Arugam Bay has rapidly become one of the leading surfing hotspots in Sri Lanka, which makes it the ideal destination for beginners and experienced surfing enthusiasts alike.

As soon as you arrive in Arugam Bay, you’ll notice that it’s teeming with trendy shops, offering all sorts of services related to surfing, including gear rental and surf lessons.

Arugam Bay Beach itself, with its crescent-shaped bay, is ideal for beginners that are keen to learn to ride the waves, while surfing points as Main Point and Elephant Rock offer the perfect challenge for those more experienced.

While there are a few other surfing points dotted around the pristine coastline of Arugam Bay – Baby Point, Pottuvil Point, Peanut Farm, and Whiskey Point, I would highly advise sticking to the main beach, especially if you’re a beginner like me.

In terms of cost, surf lessons will range from 2.000 – 3.500 rupees for 1,5 hours, while board rent ranges from 400 – 800 rupees per day.

2 | ADMIRE THE VIEWS AT KUDUMBIGALA MONASTERY

Situated about 30 kilometres south of Arugam Bay is the Kudumbigala Monastery, a sacred monastery that rises high above the encircling jungle of Kumana National Park.

First established in 246 BC, the Kudumbigala Monastery served as a sanctuary for Buddhist monks that desired a path to enlightenment above the hustle and bustle of the city.

Although this ancient rock monastery is still very much in use for spiritual practices, it has lately also appeared on the radar of those travelling to Arugam Bay.

Today, locals and travellers alike visit to climb to the top of the highest mountain, where they will discover an ancient stupa, as well as the most spectacular views of the Kumana district.

If you’re looking to visit the Kudumbigala Monastery by yourself, bear in mind that it’s likely to encounter wild animals along the way – so be cautious.

3 | SPENT A DAY CHILLING AT ARUGAM BAY BEACH

Since you’ll receive loads of new impressions on a daily basis, one of the best things to do in Arugam Bay is actually quite simple; chilling at one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka.

With its tropical palms, fine golden sand and laidback backpackers atmosphere, Arugam Bay’s main beach has become a favourite among travellers and locals alike.

During my stay in Arugam Bay, I’ve spent plenty of time on the beach, often relaxing with a good book and a fresh king coconut in hand – it was everything I wished for after 2 days of safari in the Yala National Park .

While you can easily lay down your towel on the beach, there are a few excellent beachside bars I recommend checking out; Friends Indeed and Upali Beach Resort.

Both bars have sunbeds for hire and offer excellent snack, food and cocktail options, making both joints excellent for an afternoon of relaxing.

If you like to take a swim, the water on the right-hand side of the beach is significantly calmer, which creates an area with little to no surfers in the water – perfect for those after a refreshing dive.

4 | WATCH THE SUNSET FROM ELEPHANT ROCK

It should come as no surprise that visiting Elephant Rock at sunset is on this list with things to do in Arugam Bay.

Sunsets in Arugam Bay can be quite spectacular, and there isn’t a better place to see this unfold than from the summit of Elephant Rock, while the surfers catch their last waves of the day.

Since there’s a laidback vibe going on, it has become a spot where both locals and travellers gather, often while enjoying trendy tunes, snacks and a few sundowners.

However, the journey to Elephant Rock brings a few challenges in terms of wildlife.

Upon arrival at Elephant Rock, you’ll notice a lagoon – it is said that crocodiles are still active here, so I highly advise avoiding it at all times, as well as being a tad more cautious.

Fortunately, I noticed that it was pretty easy to get around the lagoon, yet for safety reasons, I’d recommend going with a group just to be sure.

Also, I’d recommend leaving before dawn, since Elephants also occur in this area.

While the above might upset you, I believe it has to be said if you’re thinking of visiting yourself.

Having said that, visiting Elephant Rock is safe (and awesome), just remember that you’re in a country that is known for its wildlife.

5 | Join a safari tour to the Kumana National Park

Since Arugam Bay is encircled by wildlife-rich jungles, one of the best things to do here is by joining a safari tour to one of the neighbouring National Parks.

Hidden in the dense jungles is the Kumana National Park, a relatively unknown national park situated only a stone’s throw away from Arugam Bay.

Also known as Yala East, the Kumana National park is slowly becoming one of the more popular eco-tourism attractions in Sri Lanka, with significantly fewer visitors than its better-known brother; the Yala National Park.

While the density of animals is slightly lower in comparison to other national parks in Sri Lanka, it is still completely normal to spot Sri Lankan elephants, Fishing cats, Wild boars, Golden jackals and with some luck, even leopards.

But what really sets apart the Kumana National Park, is the park’s extensive birdlife, with thousands of birds migrating here every year between the months of April and July.

Though I visited the Yala National Park before going to Arugam Bay, it’s easy to see why people choose to visit the Kumana National Park.

If you’re keen to visit Kumana, I’d highly recommend sorting out your safari in advance.

6 | Admire the Muhudu Maha Viharaya Stupa in Pottuvil

Established between the sand dunes of Pottuvil Beach, the Muhudu Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple that is marked by an impressive white stupa.

Nicknamed the ‘Temple of the Ocean’, the temple was first built over 2000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna, and is still one of the region’s most impressive sights to behold.

Along with the stupa, you’ll notice several stone statues of Buddha surrounding the area, adding to the temple’s already grand appearance.

So, if you have some spare time in between all the surfing, I’d highly recommend heading to Muhudu Maha Viharaya Stupa for a relaxing morning stroll – trust me, you won’t regret it.

7 | Take a relaxing Lagoon Safari in Pottuvil

Another great way to see the region’s rich and diverse wildlife is by joining a completely different kind of safari, namely a relaxing lagoon safari on Pottuvil’s very own lagoon.

By means of a paddleboat, you will venture through the Pottuvil Lagoon, where you’ll encounter lots of different animals, including wild Sri Lankan elephants, Monitor lizards, buffalos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of bird species.

While it’s certainly not as impressive as a safari in the Yala National Park , it’s actually quite a relaxing experience – plus it’s an excellent way to support the local communities in Pottuvil

One of the most popular tours, and the one I’d personally recommend given the focus on ethical tourism, is the 2-hour lagoon safari tour provided by Unrani Eco Lagoon Safari in Pottuvil.

Where to eat in arugam bay.

Hello Burger | When you want a break from eating all those delicious curries, a burger is always a good option. And where better to have a good burger than at Hello burger. On top of the tasteful food, the cosy cafe has a good atmosphere with funky music playing in the background.

Friends Indeed | A good place to enjoy good food and drinks while watching the waves crash at the beach. They serve a balanced menu with both local and western dishes. The vibe is good and the staff is really friendly. For those who work remotely. In my experience, they have the best Wifi in Arugam Bay.

Flo! | This restaurant is located at the beginning of the main street and is the perfect place for traditional Sri Lankan breakfast. I recommend you to try their Roti with coconut sambal and Dal curry with some Lavaria on the side. They also serve high-quality fruit juices and smoothies.

Mantra | Stands out with their local cuisine and a good quality-price ratio. The home-like atmosphere makes Mantra a restaurant where you would like to return. A fun thing is that guests are allowed to write something on the wall.

Other restaurants that deserve some recognition are Cili and Karma Gardens .

WEATHER IN ARUGAM BAY | BEST TIME TO VISIT ARUGAM BAY

Given Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean, the country is known for its tropical climate, with comfortable weather year-round.

However, the pearl-shaped island is also home to two monsoon seasons that manage to have a significant impact on the island’s climate. The monsoon on the east side of Sri Lanka runs from November to January, so you might want to avoid this period.

For that reason, the best time to visit Arugam Bay is from early May till late October, when the temperatures are great and the waves are at their peak.

I’ve visited Arugam Bay in September and had excellent circumstances during my entire stay.

HOW TO GET AROUND ARUGAM BAY

Renting a scooter in Arugam Bay is by far the easiest way to get around. The cost of renting a scooter is around 1.200 to 1.500 LKR ($6.5-$8) and a full tank will cost you 600 LKR ($3.25). If you only plan to stay at the beach and the main street, walking is perfectly fine as distances in Arugam Bay aren’t that big.

HOW TO GET TO ARUGAM BAY

Depending on your itinerary it is most common to travel to Arugam Bay from Trincomalee or Ella. It is also an option to plan your visit after going on a safari in the Yala National Park in Tissamaharama. To reach Arugam Bay you have to spend some extra time as it is a bit off-track for most itineraries. The extra travel time is definitely worth it so don’t let this discourage you from going to one of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka.

FROM TRINCOMALEE TO ARUGAM BAY

Tuk tuk or private taxi | The fastest and most expensive way to travel from Trincomalee to Arugam Bay is with a tuk-tuk or private taxi. In 4-5 hours time, you’ll reach Arugam Bay and it will cost you around 10.000 – 18.000 LKR ($55-$100).

Travel time | 4 – 5 hours

Cost | 10,000-18,000 LKR ($55 – 100)

Bus | Trincomalee – Batticaloa – Pottuvil – Arugam Bay | From Trincomalee jump on a bus that brings you to Batticaloa. This journey takes between 3-4 hours if you’re lucky. At Batticaloa change to the bus with Pottuvil as the destination. This takes another estimated 3 hours. Once you reached Pottuvil it is only 10 minutes which can easily be done with a tuk-tuk or by taking a bus in the direction of Panama.

Travel time | 6 – 7 hours

Total cost | 400 – 700 LKR ($2.5 – 4)

FROM ELLA TO ARUGAM BAY

Tuk tuk | For 5000 LKR ($27-$30) a tuk tuk brings you directly from Ella to Arugam Bay in around 3 hours. The last part of this journey takes a little longer as it is really steep and a tuk tuk will have some troubles with the inclined road. Nonetheless this gives you a perfect opportunity to get your first glimpse of the beauty that the lush green mountains of Ella have to offer.

Travel time | 2.5 – 3 hours

Cost | 5,000-5,500 LKR ($27 – 30)

Bus | Ella – Wellawaya – Monaragala – Pottuvil | In some cases you will find a bus that goes straight to Monaragala from Ella. If not you have to get on the bus that brings you to Wellawaya where you have to change busses to reach Monaragala. From Monaragala you can go directly to Pottuvil by bus. Here you can jump in a tuk tuk or a bus that goes in the direction of Panama.

Travel time | 3 – 3.5 hours

Cost | 300 – 600 LKR ($2 – 3.5)

FROM YALA (TISSAMAHARAMA) TO ARUGAM BAY

Tuk-tuk | From Yala to Arugam Bay takes around 3-3.5 hours and is quite a good ride with some beautiful sceneries along the road. The price for this journey is estimated between 5.000-6.000 LKR ($27-$33). Chances of seeing elephants are highly relevant which is one of the fun parts of the journey.

Cost | 5,000 – 6,000 LKR ($27 – 33)

Bus | Tissamaharama – Thanamalwila – Wellawaya – Monaragala – Pottuvil | From Tissamaharama it is important to reach the Wellawaya bus station. Sometimes the bus goes directly from Tissamaharama but there is a chance you have to switch busses at Thanamalwila. Once you reached Wellawaya after 2-3 hours, jump on the bus that stops in Monaragala. This journey takes roughly 1.5 hours. At this point, it is really tempting to get a tuk-tuk straight to Arugam Bay as switching busses and waiting consumes a lot of time. From Monaragala to Pottuvil is still around 2 hours travelling by bus. Taking a tuk-tuk from Monaragala to Arugam Bay will cost around 2.500-3.000 LKR ($14-$16.5) and is a perfect option to win some time.

Cost | 350 – 600 LKR ($2.3 – 3.5)

Arugam Bay is a beach destination on Sri Lanka’s East Coast where you can easily get comfortable for days and not want to leave. This is exactly what happened with San and me when we visited Sri Lanka. We loved Arugam Bay’s relaxed vibe so much that we ended up spending close to 10 days here.

Many of those who visit this lovely country don’t include Arugam Bay in their itinerary for Sri Lanka at all, because of this it has maintained its relaxed vibe. Instead, most people prefer visiting Mirissa or Galle for whale spotting.

Arugam Bay is not just Sri Lanka’s top surfing destination, but is an amazing wildlife destination, an ideal place for small families and is also one of the top party places in Sri Lanka. Did I mention already that it was our favorite beach destination in Sri Lanka? 🙂

How to Reach Arugam Bay

If you’re reaching here from the central province of Sri Lanka like Kandy, Nuwara Eliya or Ella, then you can do this journey partially by train. The nearest train station to Arugam Bay is Badulla [it is on Colombo – Kandy – Ella train route ] and from there you can do this journey on a local bus or a taxi or even a tuk-tuk.

In case you’re reaching Arugam Bay directly from Colombo, then the best and the smartest thing to do would be to just rent a car from Colombo and drive. Sri Lanka is perfect for road trips and you’re going to love the landscape.

You can do the journey from Colombo on the bus as well, there is a direct bus from Colombo to Arugam Bay but it takes long around 12 hours. It is bus number 98. We highly recommend you break this journey up – after all, Sri Lanka’s central province is absolutely gorgeous. There are a few companies that are running slightly faster and better buses to Arugam Bay, check them here . (I’m not affiliated with them but this is just a website that I found online). We got on a bus from Haputale (near Ella) and reached Pottuvil. It wasn’t a direct bus and we had to change once.

Pottuvil – the closest town near Arugam Bay

Pottuvil is the closest town to Arugam Bay and that’s where most of the buses will drop you. In fact, many buses go inside Arugam Bay, but there is a tuk-tuk mafia that dominates this area.

The tuk-tuk drivers have formed an alliance with the bus staff and misinform all the international travelers and tell them that the bus doesn’t go to Arugam Bay so that there is no option but to buy a ticket. Even after reading about this scam, we had no way to avoid it when the bus staff forcefully dropped us in Pottuvill. We reached Arugam Bay on a tuk-tuk and saw the SAME bus there.

Things to do in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is one of the most famous surfing spots in Sri Lanka. Over the years, surfing has emerged as one of the top 10 things to do in Sri Lanka .

We actually visited the Peanut Farm area for a music festival but not surfing. More than anything, it is just a very beautiful spot and there is a lagoon next to the beach. I will share more information about Peanut Farm further ahead in the article. As per Lonely Planet, Arugam Bay has emerged as Asia’s hottest surfing destination BUT has still remained blissful.

The best thing that you can do in Arugam Bay is to of course relax on Arugam Beach. It is a laidback beach that’s perfectly crescent in shape. It is very sandy and there are some rocks where you can sit. There are also palm trees on Arugam Beach so that you can sit in the shade.

Arugam Bay is good for swimming because the water is warm, but be careful and don’t go too far because the surf can be strong. The best thing about Arugam Beach is that it is still not as developed as other beach destinations and you can relax peacefully.

Pottuvil Lagoon is around 20 minutes away from Arugam Bay on a tuk-tuk. It is between Arugam Bay and Pottuvil town. We actually saw this place just by chance when we were here on a cloudy afternoon.

Visiting Pottuvil Lagoon is one of those things that I recommend you do with a local guide because they know their area well. You can explore Pottuvil Lagoon on a boat through the mangroves. If you’re lucky, you may just get to see crocodiles, monkeys, interesting birds and perhaps even water monitors. You may get to see wild elephants too!

Your tour for Pottuvil Lagoon may start as early as 6:30 am but it totally depends on who you book this with. Ask your hotel or guest house to book it for you.

If you’re planning on visiting the nearby Yala National Park already, I still recommend you still visit the lagoon because here you will be exploring the wilderness from a boat the water, instead of a jeep. Typical costs for a boat tour on Pottuvil Lagoon in 2018 is LKR 6000 Rupees per person.

A visit to the lagoon will be cheaper than visiting one of the many national parks in Sri Lanka. Also, it is one of the unique things to do in Sri Lanka and should not be missed.

Yala East / Kumana National Park Safari

Kumana is known for its birdlife and is a good place to see colorful flocks of migratory birds. Kumana Bird Sanctuary is a part of Kumana National Park. Apart from the birds, you can also see turtles, crocodiles, jackals, wild boars, elephants, and otters.

Kudumbigala Monastery is on the way to Kumana National Park from Arugam Bay, in Kumana village. This forgotten monastery complex dates back to 246 BC. There is literally nothing around this complex and it is in the middle of the jungle.

You can climb up to the highest point for an amazing view. You will see the rocks, the jungle, and the coastline. It may take you around 1.5 hours. Hiking to the highest viewpoint during the heat is not recommended and will make you very tired. Do this around sunrise or sunset time but be sure to go with a local because it is in the middle of nowhere.

Sri Lanka’s temples are very famous and a majority of tourists visit the country just to see the Buddha tooth relic temple in Kandy. But keep in mind that Sri Lanka has stricter rules than many other Asian countries. You may be able to enter a temple in Thailand wearing a sleeveless but not in Sri Lanka. On a cloudy afternoon in Arugam Bay, San and I had no idea about what to do so we went to sit by the Arugam Lagoon. We made friends with two local fishermen there and ended up spending the whole day with them. They invited us to their house for chai and our friendship began.

San loves fishing and he was very curious about their ways. Next day, he woke up at 4:30 am and went fishing with them. He saw a lovely sunrise and many dolphins.

Fishing with the locals is one of the most amazing things to do in Sri Lanka. Being an island country, there are many locals whose livelihood depends on fishing and this activity will give you a good insight into their culture and lives.

Peanut Farm Beach Area

Do you know that there is a psychedelic music festival that’s organized every year in the peanut farm area? Well, that’s why San and I went to Arugam Bay in the first place. We spent 5 days camping in the peanut farm area and can only imagine how lovely this place looks when there are no people.

If you’re visiting Arugam Bay during the main surfing season, then the peanut farm is the best surfing spot around. Even if you’re not surfing, this area is actually quite beautiful. There is a big sandy beach and next to it there is a small lagoon. There are rocks near the lagoon and you can climb them and reach a smaller beach.

If San and I visit Arugam Bay again, we’d like to stay away from the main town but at the peanut farm beach area. You can stay in a cabana here that’s next to the beach.

Lahugala National Park

Lahugala National Park is closer to Arugam Bay as compared to Kumana National Park. It is close to Pottuvil Lagoon and is one of the smallest national parks of Sri Lanka. It is a very good place to see wild elephants because it is used by them as a feeding ground.

Apart from wild elephants, if you go at a decent hour for birdwatching, you will also get to see several wetland birds.

Elephant Rock / Crocodile Rock

If you come here in the early morning or late evening, you may see a herd of elephants. Please visit with the locals or a surf shop. Don’t swim in the lagoons here because there are crocodiles. There was a crocodile attack here where a British tourist was killed in 2017.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya

This temple complex is said to be around 2000 years old but is not preserved. There is no entry fee. There is a new temple and stupa that’s constructed here, and you will most likely see it from the main road that’s next to the lagoon.

Atman Festival

Here’s us enjoying Atman Festival at Peanut Farm, Arugam Bay – Sri Lanka Itinerary

This point is only relevant if you enjoy psychedelic music festivals. Atman Festival is organized in Arugam Bay’s peanut farm and is a Dark Psy and Hi-Tech music festival. The artists usually play very high BPM music, so if you don’t enjoy this genre, this festival will be too heavy for you.

If you enjoy this music like San and I do then you’re going to love this festival. For us, it was the best beach party in Sri Lanka. Here’s a little video.

Do Not Swim in the Lagoons [Crocodile Warning]

Do not swim in the lagoon – crocodiles – sign next to a Lagoon in Arugam Bay

As mentioned twice already in this article – do not even think of swimming in Arugam Bay’s lagoons. There are many lagoons in the entire area of Arugam Bay, Panama Bay (right below Arugam Bay) and Pottuvil.

It is worth noting that a British surfer was killed by a crocodile near the Elephant Rock in 2017. This apparently happened when he went off alone to find a toilet and was near the lagoon. This is the first ever recorded incident of a crocodile attack in Sri Lanka. There was a saltwater crocodile attack in India’s Havelock island as well a few years back.

Arugam Bay Beach, Sri Lanka – East Coast

The main Arugam Bay Area is nothing but a straight road that runs more or less parallel to the beach. Here you will find bars, restaurants, local shops and guest houses. We stayed in three different hotels in Arugam Bay and they were all good. Here are our recommendations:

Green Beach Hotel – this place has simple and clean rooms and is near the beach. Room prices start from €24 per night.
Drift – this place has lovely air conditioned villas that are near the beach starting at €43 per night.
Arcadia Villas – private villas with a patio starting at €47 per night.
Utopia – a simple and affordable place near the beach with private rooms starting at €14 per night.
Little Lagoon Hostel – Very comfortable and social hostel. A bed in a 4 person dormitory costs €14 per night.

Super Tour Arugam Bay was an amazing tour operar to work with. The safari keep was comfortable and had a canopy. Our driver was very knowledgeable and had very good English. He went out of his way to go off road to find us a leopard, which he did! Highly recommend!
