The borough of Duncannon is situated at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers and is well-known for its views from Hawk Rock as well as the friendliness, hospitality and generosity of its residents.

Duncannon is also part of the Kittatinny Ridge Flyway Global Important Bird Area (IBA). Kittatinny Ridge is a long mountain ridge that winds 185 miles through eastern and central Pennsylvania, to the Maryland line. Each year tens of thousands of raptors and vultures and millions of songbirds use this flyway for their fall migration. The many rock outcroppings along the ridge also make it an excellent place to watch the many migrating species.

With its many natural riches, Duncannon is treasured by thousands of hikers, river enthusiasts and visitors.

TOUR THE TOWN

• Grab a bite to eat when you arrive. Choose from a diner, a historic hotel, a pretzel shop, a pizzeria, an ice cream stand, a hoagie shop or food trucks.
• Stop by Noye Park and visit the cute little “Gnome Homes” found in and around some of the trees in this quaint little park just across the bridge from the intersection of High and Walnut streets.
• While away the afternoon by launching your canoe or kayak into the Susquehanna river at Water and Ann Street or at Water Street and Broadway Avenue, or you can launch into the mouth of Shermans Creek by the Shermans Creek bridge near Inn Road and Little Boston Road.
• Reminisce about your childhood snow days at the Sled Works on Market Street. If you had a sled as a child there’s a good chance it was built here, where Lightning Guider sleds were once manufactured. After 86 years producing sleds, the factory closed its doors in 1990 and has since become a popular antiques market.
• Check out Clark’s Tavern at the corner of Market and Clark Streets. The oldest standing building in Duncannon, the tavern served as the Union Army’s local recruiting office during the Civil War.
• Tour the quaint little log church at the end of Cemetery Street (40.404887, -77.021309) that was originally built at this site in 1804 and then rebuilt in 1970.

Hike 1 : hawk rock.

You won’t want to miss a hike to Hawk Rock. The view of the confluence of the Susquehanna River, Juniata River and Sherman’s Creek is one of the best vistas in Pennsylvania. Take Little Boston Road to the recycling center, where you’ll find ample parking, and follow the signs from there. You can also use the Mountain Club of Maryland parking lot on Inn Road.

HIKE 2 : Clark’s Ferry Bridge across the Susquehanna River.

Park at the park and ride off the Halifax Exit. Cross the railroad tracks and take the A.T. northbound up Peter’s Mountain to the blue-blazed Susquehanna Trail. The Susquehanna Trail rejoins the A.T. at the top of the ridge and you can take the A.T. southbound back to your car for a 3.7-mile loop.

Hiking to Hawk Rock Overlook Along the Appalachian Trail in Duncannon.

There are a lot of great hiking trails that end at overlooks throughout the state . And one of the best is the trail to Hawk Rock Overlook along the Appalachian Trail in Duncannon, Pennsylvania .

Seeing as I live in Harrisburg, only about 30 minutes away from the trailhead, this hike has been on my radar for a while now, but it was only recently that I was finally able to check it out.

After driving north along the beautiful banks of the Susquehanna River, and driving through the quaint downtown of Duncannon, I arrived at the trailhead for the hike. The hike up Hawk Rock is only a little over a mile, but gains over 700 feet in elevation and contains many large rocks, so it is certainly a bit difficult.

The trail itself is quite easy to follow. If you come in the way I did (See below for directions), you’ll meet up with the Appalachian Trail from your left. Keep going straight, following the white blazes to the top of Cove Mountain.

Along the way, be prepared to navigate some very rocky sections of the trail. In fact, you’re likely to fully understand why many Appalachian Trail hikers refer to Pennsylvania as “Rocksylvania.”

Hawk Rock Overlook is a large rock outcropping at the top of the mountain, and the view from the top is simply stunning. Spread out below you is the borough of Duncannon and the winding Susquehanna River. From this point, you can see north along the river for many miles, including the confluence of the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers.

The beauty of the view and relatively easy trip to the top has made Hawk Rock Overlook a popular place for locals and one of the most famous views along the Appalachian Trail. Unfortunately, this popularity has also brought trash and graffiti to the overlook, in addition to a large number of hikers.

Fortunately, there is a secret overlook nearby that provides much better views. However, you have to know how to find it because the trail can be difficult to find and there are no signs indicating the way. (Again, directions below)

From Cove Mountain Overlook, you’ll have an expansive view of the Susquehanna River and Duncannon. While it is similar to the view from Hawk Rock Overlook in many regards, it is much, much better in my opinion, though there is a bit of noise from the highway and train tracks below.

Overall, the hike to Hawk Rock Overlook and Cove Mountain is definitely one of the best and most rewarding in the Harrisburg area. If you haven’t yet done this hike, I highly recommend it.

How to Get to Hawk Rock Overlook and Cove Mountain Overlook

Park your car at the following coordinates: 40.383009, -77.033086.

This is a gravel parking lot behind some residential homes and is only accessible by crossing the bridge over Sherman Creek from downtown Duncannon. You can also park along Inn Road across from Tubby’s Nightclub if parking is full.

While you can hike along the Appalachian Trail from near the nightclub, I’ve been told that accessing it from the first parking area listed is easiest.

From the main parking area, you’ll see a trail going uphill, next to the road, which continues straight for a bit. Take the trail uphill.

While steep, the trail is easy to follow and relatively smooth. After about 10 minutes, you’ll see the Appalachian Trail coming in from your left. You’ll want to keep going straight, but from here on, you can follow the white blazes on the trees.

A few more minutes up the trail, it gets very rocky, and you’ll have to watch your step as you carefully pick your way across the rock field. It’s in this area where the blazes are rather helpful in keeping you on the trail.

Once you leave the rocks behind, you have another 5-10 minutes of hiking in front of you before you reach Hawk Rock Overlook. Overall, expect the hike to take roughly 30 minutes to complete.

After you’ve had your fill over Hawk Rock Overlook, you can head back down the mountain, or you can continue to Cove Mountain Overlook for a better view.

To get to this overlook, continue following the Appalachian Trail to the crest of the ridge, which is less than 100 yards from Hawk Rock Overlook. On your left, you will see a small open area with a fire pit in the middle. Looking at the fire pit, you’ll be able to see a small trail heading off at roughly the 9 o’clock position.

This trail follows along the ridgeline of Cove Mountain and is relatively flat.

At points, this trail is wide and easy to follow, but at other times, it can be narrow and even a bit difficult to pinpoint. Fortunately, those areas aren’t too common, and you should have little trouble figuring out the path of the trail, which is basically straight along the mountaintop.

It should be noted, however, that this trail is not an official one and doesn’t receive much traffic. Because of this, I can only recommend this route for experienced hikers.

Depending on how fast you walk, it will take you 10-15 minutes to get to Cove Mountain Overlook. The overlook is really just a small rock outcropping, barely big enough for a handful of people to congregate. The outcropping sits a few feet below the ridgeline, but at the very edge of the mountain.

To get back to your car from this second overlook, you have two choices. Both are behind you, where you’ll see a fork in the trail.

Heading along the left trail will allow you to retrace your steps back to Hawk Rock and go back down along that trail. If it is at all icy on the trail, this is what I would recommend.

The second way allows you to make a loop but is rather difficult as it follows a narrow and rocky unmarked path.

To follow this path, take the right split. The trail will very quickly become very narrow shortly after leaving the overlook, before widening out. Follow the rocky old creek bed down the hill. While there are no markings, the path of the rocks is easy enough to follow. After hiking for about 10 minutes, you’ll come to the Appalachian Trail.

If you parked where I recommended, head left (if you parked at the nightclub, turn right).

After a few minutes of hiking the Appalachian Trail, you’ll reach a split at an obvious trail. Turn right to head downhill towards your car.

Probably a little easier to do in the opposite direction. Hike from the parking lot. When you reach the AT, turn left. The fork towards Cove Mtn Overlook(others call it Peters Mtn Overlook because you are standing on Cove Mtn looking at Peters Mtn) has been made extremely obvious. Go to the right, and uphill steeply. Clockwise loop. Almost always go up the steeper and down the more gentle one.

If you want to do the whole loop, that may make more sense. Since most people go to Hawk Rock and turn around, I decided to write the directions in the order that I did as it does work that way without much difficulty.

In celebration, the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community(TM) (DATC) Advisory Committee will party-hearty in Duncannon on June 2, 2012. The theme of the event is "Saving Our Community from Nature Deficit Disorder." Local environmental organizations and local artisans will vend their wares. Live music, outdoor-presentations and storytelling are only part of the fun.

The Appalachian Trail Community(TM) program is designed to recognize communities that promote and protect the Appalachian Trail (AT). Towns, counties, and communities along the AT's corridor are considered assets by AT hikers and many of these towns act as good friends and neighbors to the trail. The program serves to assist communities with sustainable economic development through tourism and outdoor recreation, while preserving and protecting the AT.

Duncannon is a borough in Perry County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2014 estimate. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The center of population of Pennsylvania is located in Duncannon. Lightning Guider sleds were manufactured in Duncannon from 1904 until 1988. The Appalachian Trail makes its way through the town, going on various streets, and runs mainly along North High Street. It comes off the mountain at 40.3813, -77.0292 lat/long, onto Inn Road. Our family chose to tour the PA state capital (as well as other locations in the area) and found it to be very interesting as well as educational. The architecture is amazing and extremely well kept/maintained. Security was right as expected but very polite and explained everything so the kids knew what was happening and why.

This is a State Park that I would highly recommend! There are so many charming features that you do not expect to find in a state park like the dearest running water mill, perfect backdrop for family photos and such an interesting find! There's also a lovely red covered bridge to see and walk through as well as an old caboose to climb on, again perfect for photos with your children! There's gorgeous flat easy walks with wide trails that the entire family will enjoy as well as adventurous rocky climbing/steep steps for those who want a bit of a challenge and adventure! All the trails that we have tried are gorgeous and a step above in quality and view! The lake is lovely, perfect for a quiet and peaceful canoe or kayak excursion! The boat dock is a picturesque spot to really get a good view of the lake and there's a little dock where one can sit on the edge with toes dangling in the water! I love this park and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a nice day out in nature with pretty things to see and enjoy!!

We love this place! It's a manageable size for kids & grandparents! We hadn't been in several years & found the upgrades to be wonderful! The sloth is a crowd pleaser, the baby capybaras were adorable & bear feeding time was fascinating. We didn't take the safari tour this time but please note that you don't have to decide at the parking kiosk if you want to take the safari. You can add it from within the park for the same price. We stopped at Hershey's ZooAmerica later on the same day and there is no comparison. Lake Tobias is hands down 100% better!

We also offer rentals on the Susquehanna River, running through the mountains of south central Pennsylvania directly behind our shop, and custom outfitting and repairs in our extensive workshop. Had a great afternoon of canoeing on the Susquehanna river. This place is just north or Harrisburg, PA, the state capitol. At first, we were hesitant to take the south-bound trip, because we worried the riverbanks would be so developed it would not seem wild. Not so. the river is beautiful. The outfitters gave us directions to an island along the way in which birds like cormorants and herons were nesting. It was spectacular. the river is very wide and smooth, with only a few places where you need to navigate around rocks or shelves. the outfitters were excellent in giving guidance and suggestions and very quick picking us up at the pull-out point, which is across from the state capitol. They also run other canoeing itineraries. Highly recommended.

After reading an article recently promoting the working old fashion soda fountain, thought we'd stop for a mid-afternoon treat. To our disappointment, the fountain is closed and we were told it has been for some time. They apparently don't have anyone to run it. If you are interested in flea market type items, this place was huge and seemed to have a variety. We were disappointed about not getting to have a treat at the soda fountain.

Stopped for lunch on a hot and humid day. Patio fabulous. Umbrellas, close to nature, view of waterfall, quiet. Burger and Greek salad were excellent; generous in size, made to order. Servers were friendly, quick, proficient, and attentive. Relaxing visit with great food.

It was a great 2hrs. The exhibits were thought provoking. The museum has 2 floors with an elevator. There’s a great view of the area from the museum. The gift shop has a good selection of items. I would definitely go there again.

In 1769, Robert Armstrong established Gobatsburg Farm, which included a stone house, summer kitchen, ice house, barn and several other buildings, on 200 acres. 100 acres remains and contains the vineyards which are now part of the Armstrong Valley Vineyard & Winery. We produce dry reds & whites, semi-sweet reds & whites, and an array of fruit wines. We also have an event center in the barn.

Wonderful spot for a visit. There's a nice open area for seating, along with the enclosed porch area. A large selection of wines to choose from. Definitely stop when you are in the area; you'll be glad you did.

When I first visited this place, a few years ago, I was not impressed. Not because their wines weren't any good, it's just that they were mostly sweet and we prefer more dry wines. The last two times I went back, I have been pleasantly surprised. They have upgraded the facilities and they now have some nice dry wines.

Nagoro is a small village in Japan full of life-sized dolls. These dolls outnumber humans by nearly 10 to 1. In the village, there are about 350 dolls and 27 humans -- something enough to describe the place as a terrifying toyland.
