It presents a spectacular view of water thundering down through the narrow passage under the rock and is believed to have been placed there by Bhim, the second eldest among the five Pandava brothers.

Vyas Gufa: Near Mana Village, this is a rock-cave where Ved Vyas is believed to have composed the Mahabharata and the pauranic commentaries.

Badrinath Weather: The average maximum temperature will be around 18° Celsius and the average minimum is 8° Celsius. Warm and woolen clothes are hence required for a stay in Badrinath throughout the year. Winter in Badrinath is often accompanied by snowfalls. Winter is very chilly with an average temperature of 5° Celsius. Due to the extreme climatic conditions, this time is usually closed for tourists

Day 09 : Badrinath – Joshimath – Rudraprayag (160kms/7hr) Height: 895 MTS.

Morning enjoy the after breakfast, drive for Rudraprayag via Joshimath. Visit on the way Darshan of Vishu Prayag, Narsingh Temple in Joshimath, Karn Prayag and Nand Prayag. Check into the hotel arrival in Rudraprayag. Overnight stay at Rudraprayag.

Joshimath: Joshimath is situated on the slopes above the confluence of the rivers Alaknanda and Dhauliganga. Of the four ‘Maths’ established by Adi Shankaracharya, Joshimath is the winter seat of Badrinath. The idol is brought down to Joshimath and installed in the temple for people to worship. There are many other temples in the township. The most important is the temple of Nir Singh with the idol of Lord Vishnu.

Rudraprayag: It is one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of Alaknanda River. It is confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. Kedarnath, a Hindu holy town is located 86 km from Rudraprayag.

Rudraprayag Weather: Generally hot in summer, the temperature ranges from 35-40 degree Celsius, Winter: The Days are pleasantly cool but the nights are cold, temp ranges from 20 deg to 05 deg.

Day 10 : Rudraprayag – Haridwar ( 160 kms / 6 – 7 hrs )

Morning after breakfast, drive for Haridwar via Rishikesh. Rishikesh ‘place of sages’ is a celebrated spiritual town on the bank of Ganga and is surrounded by Shivalik range of the Himalayas on three sides. It is said that when Raibhya Rishi did hard penances, God appeared by the name of “Hrishikesh ” and this area hence firth came to be known as Rishikesh. Later visit Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula in Rishikesh. Drop at Haridwar.

Rishikesh: Named after the Lord Vishnu, Rishikesh is a holy city for Hindus. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern India it is also known as the Yoga Capital of the World. It is home to many world-renowned ashrams. It is surrounded by the Himalayan Mountains and Rajaji National Park. The fast-flowing Ganges is surrounded by forested hills inside the city. Apart from temples and ashrams, Rishikesh is now a popular white-water rafting center, backpacker hang-out, and gateway to treks in the Himalaya.

Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra Essential Guide

Pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath Temples

char dham yatra group tour

After the snow clears at the foothills of the Himalayas in late April, Hindu pilgrims start flocking to the four ancient temples known as Char Dham. Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand , these temples mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath). Hindus consider visiting the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death. There are a number of options for going on a Char Dham yatra (journey).

Char Dham Yatra Overview

The Char Dham are only open at certain times of the year from late April or early May to November. May and June is the peak pilgrimage period. The monsoon season (July to September) can quite dangerous as the rain makes the route slippery.

How Can the Char Dham be Reached?

A Char Dham yatra isn't easy. Pilgrims really need to earn the benefits bestowed, as only two of the temples (Badrinath and Gangotri) are accessible by vehicle. The remaining two (Yamunotri and Kedarnath) require treks. Kedarnath has the lengthiest trek. It takes around 10-12 days to visit all the temples. However, it's now possible to cover all the temples in two days by helicopter.

To help ensure the safety of pilgrims, a medical checkup has been introduced for those trekking to Kedarnath temple. Special checkup points are provided en-route for this. In addition, all pilgrims going on the Char Dham Yatra must complete biometric registration. It can be done online here or at designated registration centers in Uttarakhand. There will be regular weather updates provided along the route, as well as telecommunication network coverage, mobile medical facilities, and a control room.

Where are the Char Dham Located?

  • Badrinath and Gangotri -- are both directly reachable by road from Haridwar , Rishikesh , Kotdwar, and Dehradun.
  • Yamunotri -- the trek starts from Janki Chatti, 225 kilometers (140 miles) from Rishikesh .
  • Kedarnath -- the trek starts from Gaurikund, 207 kilometers (130 miles) from Rishikesh .

Are there any Tour Packages?

Although it's not difficult to make your own travel arrangements for a Char Dham yatra, there are plenty of Char Dham packages available as well. Two options are:

  • Government-operated Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam organizes package tours by bus every year from May to November. There are plenty of options from seeing only one temple to all four temples. It's possible to include the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib too. Most tours depart from Rishikesh but some leave from Haridwar or Dehradun, depending on the itinerary. The shortest tour is four nights and the longest is 11. Tours are priced from around 10,000 rupees per person. Some have shared accommodations and bathroom.
  • If you'd prefer a more upmarket option, Leisure Hotels has set up luxury Chardham Camps at each of the sites and offers various package deals .
  • Pilgrim Aviation is a reputable private company that offers helicopter tour packages.

The temples are usually visited in clockwork direction, from west to east. This means you should see them in the following order: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath. Haridwar or Rishikesh are the starting points for transportation.

What is the Situation After the 2013 Flood At Kedarnath?

Substantial repair and reconstruction works have been carried after the flash flood in Uttarakhand, which caused extensive devastation and loss of life in the area around Kedarnath temple. This has made the trek much safer and more comfortable for pilgrims.

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering has repaired the damaged stretch of track from Gaurikund to Rambara and made a new track from Rambara to Kedarnath. In addition, accommodation and sanitation facilities have been improved. There are resting points, toilets, tea stalls, medical facilities, police stations, and State Disaster Response Force patrols on the route. Emergency helipads have been constructed in various locations, and an early warning alarm system has been installed to provide alerts about any disasters on the route and around the lake there.

How to Visit Badrinath Temple

Badrinath temple is the most accessible and thus most popular of the Char Dham. You'll find this temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, surrounded by a rather untidy village and overshadowed by the towering, snow-topped, Nilkantha peak.

When is Badrinath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Basant Panchami in February, while the closing date is decided on  Dussehra . Generally, the temple remains open for around 10 days after Diwali . The opening date for 2021 has been announced as May 18.

How Can Badrinath Temple be Reached?

Read more about Badrinath temple and how to visit it in this complete guide.

How to Visit Gangotri Temple

The simple shrine of Gangotri temple has special significance for Hindu pilgrims. It's considered to be one of the holiest places in India as it's regarded as the spiritual source of the ever powerful Ganges River. Set amidst rugged mountains and forest, Gangotri attracts almost 300,000 pilgrims a year. Every evening towards 8 p.m., an aarti (worship with fire) is held at the temple.

When is Gangotri Temple Open?

Gangotri temple opens on a set day every year. This falls on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar), in the last week of April or first week of May.  In 2021, Gangotri will open on May 14. The occasion features a traditional procession of the Goddess Ganga back from her winter home at Mukhyamath temple in Mukhba village, 20 kilometers (12 miles) downstream. The temple closes on Diwali every year, and the Goddess returned to Mukhyamath temple.

How Can Gangotri Temple be Reached?

Gangotri is most popularly reached from Rishikesh (12 hours away) via Uttarkashi (six hours away). It's possible to take a bus or jeep to get there. Guesthouses and a GMVN Tourist Bungalow provide accommodations for those who want to stay.

Trekking to the Actual Source of the Ganges River

If you don't mind a strenuous trek, you can actually go to where the Ganges River emerges from a glacier above Gangotri. The actual source is an ice cave called Gaumukh (meaning Cow's Mouth), 18 kilometers (11 miles) up. Three days are required to complete the return trek, with around six hours of trekking a day. You can stay in a dormitory at a GMVN Tourist Bungalow along the way at Bhojbasa. It's situated around six hours from Gangotri and three hours from Gaumukh.

How to Visit Yamunotri Temple

The Yamunotri temple lies close to the source of the Yamuna River, the second holiest river in India, which flows all the way down past the Taj Mahal . The temple is relatively undeveloped as it's the least visited of the Char Dham. However, there is a certain magic to be experienced from the pristine mountain air, running water, natural scenic beauty, and enthusiastic devotees. Pilgrims also get to enjoy a number of hot water springs in the vicinity of the temple.

When is Yamunotri Temple Open?

The same as Gangotri temple, Yamunotri temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar). It falls in the last week of April or first week of May. In 2021, it is on May 14. The temple also closes for the season on Diwali. On the day the temple opens, the Goddess is carried from the nearby village of Kharsali (said to be Yamuna's mother's home), installed in the temple, and duly returned when the temple closes.

How Can Yamunotri Temple be Reached?

The route by road is Haridwar/Rishikesh-Dehradun-Mussoorie-Naugaon-Barkot–Hanuman Chatti. The journey to the village of Hanuman Chatti, which is around 14 kilometers from the Yamunotri temple, takes around eight hours from Rishikesh and six hours from the hill station of Mussoorie . From there, it's necessary to take a shared taxi (departures every few minutes) to Janki Chatti. Your trek starts there! It's only 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the Yamunotri temple, via Kharsali, but it's a very steep and and in some parts narrow climb. As a result, people usually take around two hours to cover the distance and it really helps if you take a locally available walking stick. If you find you don't want to walk, there are mules and men to help carry you.

Basic guesthouses and GMVN Tourist Bungalows provide accommodations at Yamunotri, Janki Chatti, and Hanuman Chatti. If you stay the night at Yamunotri, you'll be able to witness the evening aarti (worship with fire) there.

Is it Possible to See the Actual Source of the Yamuna River?

The origin of the Yamuna River is a frozen lake and glacier located around a kilometer above the temple. Unless you have mountaineering skills, the climb isn't advised though. It's a very difficult one.

How to Visit Kedarnath Temple

The most remote and holiest of the Char Dham, although Kedarnath temple requires effort to get to, it still draws more than 100,000 pilgrims a year. This is because it's considered to be the seat of Lord Shiva and the most important of the 12 Jyotirlingas (large lingas /shrines to Shiva) in India. It's an impressive temple too -- perhaps the largest and most magnificent one in the Himalayas. Situated high up in Lord Shiva's territory, it occupies a glacial terrace leftover from a long ago melted glacier, in the Mandakini Valley.

When is Kedarnath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Maha Shivaratri in late February or early March each year. In 2021, it will open on May 17. The temple closes the day after Diwali each year.

How Can Kedarnath Temple be Reached?

The route to Kedarnath starts off at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as to Badrinath, but branches off at Rudraprayag (where connections are available). The destination is Gaurikund, 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Kedarnath. The whole journey from Rishikesh takes around 12 hours by bus or jeep. Then, from Gaurikund, it's a grueling uphill trek to the temple. Expect it to take around six hours. The stunning scenery of the Mandakini River along the way helps though! Those who don't feel up to walking can opt to take a pony, which will reduce the duration of the trek by an hour. There are porters available to help carry luggage as well.

Alternatively, Kedranath temple is also accessible by helicopter! The Uttarakhand government provides services departing from various locations and online bookings can be made here . Other options are Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (owned by the Indian government) and private company Pilgrim Aviation . A one way trip only takes 15 minutes.

Where to Stay?

In terms of accommodations, basic GMVN Tourist Bungalows can be found at Gaurikund. Following the devastating 2013 flash flood, which destroyed infrastructure around the temple, the government has constructed tent colonies to accommodate pilgrims. New sanitation facilities, including toilets and bathrooms, have been added along with community kitchens.

Our Yatra director Agrani Krishna Dasa, explained the sthala purana very well. Every night after the dinner prasadam he used to explain in detail about the next day program and the places about to visit. He took special care towards the senior citizens. This Yatra will be a very memorable yatra in my lifetime. The service which they are doing in the name of Tirtha Yatra is very good.

The Char Dham Yatra has been well organized. The temple visits were well timed so that we get darshan in all the temples. Food was quite homely and excellent. The Yatra director was well knowledgeable of the history of the temples and kept everyone interested. I would love to travel again with this team and refer others too. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for your appreciation. We are humbled.

Lalitha Muralidhar

The experience with Tirtha Yatra team has been spiritual and great. I will encourage my friends to travel to the holy places with Tirtha Yatra team. They give importance to satsang and satvic food. The kirtana and satsang helps yatris to be more devoted. The sthala purana narrations by the Yatra Director were good.

We are glad that you enjoyed your spiritually uplifting travel to Char Dham with our team.

Hare Krishna, Do we expect a lot of kirtan and lecture during yatra as it seems the yatra doesn’t belong to any Nama Hatta but more a kind of private travel agency. and secondly is there any deduction in amount if we want to join and leave the yatra from haridwar and not using pony service from Uttar Kashi to Kedarnath.

Hare Krishna Mataji, there would be kirtana as well as lectures during the yatra. Yes it is private pilgrimage tourism company created by ISKCON devotees. The amount will remain the same, in case you are wanting to join us from Haridwar because Yatra actually begins from Haridwara. Pony services are anyway at extra and actual cost to the vendor.

Rajan Murthy

I am interested for this CharDham trip..couple of questions from my side

1) Based on the above comments, everyone need to assemble at Delhi Airport on 1st October night…I would be travelling from Mumbai, so I need to take care of my flight from Mumbai to Delhi myself.

2) Does everyone need to take the Helicopter till Kedarnath and return or we can travel by pony service etc ?

3) Can you provide us with a checklist of items required from our end for this journey since I am travelling for the first time.

4) Typically what is your group strength for this trip (15-20 people).

Dear Rajan Sir, Please find the answer for your questions: 1) Everyone has to assemble at Delhi airport on Sep 30 night between 9 pm -10 pm. 2) No compulsion on the helicopter to Kedar. Pony can also be taken. 3) Once the registration is made, you will be provided with the check list and other necessary requirements a month before the yatra. 4) For Char Dham, the maximum strength will be 40 yatris. Thank you.

FAQs about Chardham Tour Packages

Q. What are the opening and closing dates of the Chardham Yatra? A. Prior to going ahead and booking one of the Chardham packages, you need to ascertain what time of the year you are going to be travelling and whether or not the Chardham Yatra is open at that time of the year. Chotta Chardham comprises Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, with the temples marking the sources of Hinduism’s four rivers - Ganga, Yamuna, Mandakini and Alaknanda. The Chardham Yatra remains open between April to the first half of November. Although the specific dates are announced by the state government of Uttarakhand annually and it states the opening and closing dates of the circuit. In the winter, the deities are moved to their winter abode such as Joshimath for Badrinath, Ukimath for Kedarnath, Mukhba for Gangotri and Kharsali for Yamunotri. These winter abodes stay open round the year and you can visit them in that season in case you cannot make it to Chardham within the stipulated period. Q. What is the significance of Gangotri in Chardham Yatra? A. As you go through Chardham tour packages, make sure you have enough time at Gangotri, the source of Hinduism’s holiest river, the Ganges. The holiest shrine in the country, the Gangotri Temple is greatly revered for being the source the Ganga River. Legend has it that the rock on the site acted like a shield to save the planet from the disaster the river could have otherwise wrecked as it poured out of Lord Shiva’s matted locks sitting in Mount Kailash. It is believed that Lord Shiva placed the rock in that position to stop the onslaught of the gushing waters. The temple was built in the 18 th century by Gorkha commander, Amar Singh Thapa. It is Gaumukh which is the original source of the Ganges, but the Gaumukh glacier is about 19 kilometre up ahead of the Gangotri Temple. The temple opens its doors on Akshay Tritiya usually in May and closes down on Bhai Dhuj in late-October or early-November. Pilgrims, believing in Ganga’s healing properties, take back bottles full of the holy water. There are several smaller shrines in the region, each home to a legend on the Ganges’ evolution that has its roots in mythology. Q. What route do you take on the Chardham Yatra? A. All Chardham holiday packages will mention in detail the route you would be taking on your tour of the pilgrimage circuit. Arrive in Haridwar from Delhi and then travel to Barkot. Barkot is the closest source of the Yamuna River, the Yamunotri, around 200 kilometre from Haridwar. Return to Barkot and now head towards Gangotri that is about 210 kilometre away. Proceed from Gangotri towards Uttarkashi, a scenic 95 kilometre drive. Continue to Sitapur from Uttarkashi that is around 212 kilometre away, and from there head to Gaurikund. Gaurikund would be the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to the shrine of Kedarnath. After paying your respects at the Kedarnath Temple, continue to Rudraprayag that is about 75 kilometre away and from there proceed to Badrinath. Badrinath is about 160 kilometre from Rudraprayag. Visit the shrine and further arrive in Birhi, about 95 kilometre away. From Birhi Rishikesh is around 160 kilometres. Take a cab to get into Haridwar from Rishikesh and further to your onward destination. Q. Is Chardham yatra booking availabe in 2023? A. All vaccinated tourists will be allowed for Chardham Yatra from 14 May 2023. Q. What is the best time to go on a Chardham tour? A. The Chota Chardham circuit created in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya comprises Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. April to June is the best time to visit Chardham as the weather remains pleasant and you can do with some layering, although you would need sweaters after sunset as the temperatures drastically plummet. You must avoid a trip to Chardham in monsoon or winter when it gets very cold and the rains making the treks and hikes extremely treacherous. Q. Which are the places included in a Chardham trip? A. While the Chardham yatra involves Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram and Puri, the Chota Chardham includes a visit to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath being the abode of Lord Shiva, Badrinath that of Vishnu, Gangotri Temple near which is the source of the Ganga River and Yamunotri Temple, a temple built on a site which is close to the source of the Yamuna River. Q. What will be the route taken on a Chardham tour? A. You will begin from Haridwar and go to Barkot, Barkot is about 200 kilometre away and close to it is the source of Yamuna, Yamunotri. From Barkot, head for Gangotri which is 210 kilometre away. From Gangotri, visit Uttarkashi which is 95 kilometre away. From Uttarkashi, head out to Sitapur, about 212 kilometre away, and from there to Gaurikund, which is the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to Kedarnath. Post your visit to Kedarnath, head to Rudraprayag which is 75 kilometre away and then to Badrinath which is 160 kilometre away. From Badrinath, reach Birhi which is 95 kilometre away, and further to Rishikesh which is another 160 kilometre away. You can take a cab to Haridwar from Rishikesh and take the train to your onward destination.

Historic start for Char Dham Yatra 2024: Uttarkashi welcomes over 3,60,000 pilgrims

The Char Dham Yatra, which began on May 10 this year, encompasses the sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.

In an extraordinary display of devotion, the Char Dham Yatra has seen a record-breaking influx of pilgrims to Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham within the first 15 days of the pilgrimage season. On Friday, 9,812 pilgrims visited Yamunotri Dham, while 13,602 made their way to Gangotri Dham. This surge in devotees brings the total to an impressive 3,63,537 visitors to these two holy sites since the doors opened.

Comparing these figures to previous years, the numbers highlight a significant increase in participation. In the same period in 2023, 1,97,413 pilgrims visited, and in 2022, 2,22,852 made the journey.

Despite the remarkable growth, the Char Dham Yatra has continued seamlessly and efficiently following the meticulous planning and coordination by district authorities.

District Magistrate Dr Meherban Singh Bisht has been at the forefront of ensuring the pilgrimage runs smoothly.

During his visits to various stops along the Gangotri Yatra route , he emphasized the necessity of keeping travel arrangements tight.

"No person should be allowed to travel without registration," Dr Bisht instructed officials, reinforcing the importance of organization and safety amid the large crowds.

Despite the surge in pilgrims and vehicles, the journey to the Dhams remains orderly.

Vehicles are managed at holding points and one-way gates to prevent congestion.

Adjustments in stopping places and timings have streamlined the flow of traffic, ensuring that the pilgrimage time remains consistent with normal days.

Uttarkashi, home to Yamunotri and Gangotri, has been a focal point of devotion as pilgrims flock to these revered sites.

The River Yamuna, originating from the Yamunotri Glacier, adds to the spiritual significance of the journey.

Pilgrimage season peaks in Uttarakhand for the Char Dham Yatra annually during the summers.

Char Dham Yatra: Hill stations to avoid on weekends in summer

TRAVEL TRENDS Created : May 25, 2024, 10:00 IST

char dham yatra group tour

As reported earlier, the eagerly awaited Chardham Yatra of 2024 has already commenced, with reports indicating that more than 26 lakh pilgrims have enlisted for the pilgrimage. However, the sacred expedition has been marred by adversity for a significant portion of pilgrims. Accounts of extensive traffic congestion along the Gangotri-Yamunotri Highway have emerged, leading to prolonged delays and subsequent protests from disgruntled pilgrims. The congestion issue has become a focal point of dissatisfaction, with pilgrims urging authorities to take responsibility for the inadequate management of traffic flow.

Meanwhile, we have listed some of the hill stations that you can consider avoiding on weekends this summer.

Tucked away in the picturesque Uttarkashi district, Barkot is a serene hill station surrounded by lush green forests, glistening streams, and snow-capped peaks. Away from the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist spots, Barkot offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. However, if you want to avoid the influx of tourists during the Char Dham Yatra, long queues at attractions, it’s better that you give it a miss for the time being.

Nestled along the banks of the Bhagirathi River, Harsil is a hidden gem in the Uttarkashi district known for its pristine beauty and tranquil ambiance. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, dense pine forests, and apple orchards, Harsil offers a serene retreat away from the tourist crowds. This place falls on the way to Gangtori, as such this route will likely remain crowded during this time. Think twice before planning a trip to this place.

Located amid the breathtaking scenery of the Garhwal Himalayas, Chopta is a serene hill station renowned for its lush green meadows, pristine forests, and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Often referred to as the ‘Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,’ Chopta offers a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist destinations. It serves as the starting point of the trek to Tungnath, and is on the way to Badrinath. Check out the advisories before setting out on a trip to this place.

Situated at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers, Joshimath is a serene hill town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Joshimath offers a peaceful retreat for spiritual seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. On the way from Pipalkoti to Badrinath, you will find this beautiful place, and due to the huge influx of pilgrims, the route to this place might be busy.

Mussoorie is another popular hill station known for its colonial charm, lush greenery, and panoramic vistas. While it may attract crowds during weekends, there are plenty of offbeat trails and lesser-known spots where visitors can find solitude amid nature's embrace. En route to Yamunotri, you will be able to explore the serene beauty of Kempty Falls, which might also witness crowds given the current situation.

Char Dham yatra: Over 9.5 lakh pilgrims visit Uttarakhand; both tourist numbers and deaths hit a high

As many as 52 persons died due to heart attack

Puja Awasthi

More than twice the number of tourists have visited the Char Dham in Uttarakhand this year, where yatra started in May. Kedarnath, which like Gangotri and Yamunotri, started receiving pilgrims on May 10, leads with 4.24 lakh visitors. However, the number of deaths has also risen.

Till Friday, as per the state government's figures, 9.67 lakh pilgrims have visited and, as many as 52 persons, mostly aged above 60 years, died during this period due to heart attacks. Kedarnath leads here too with 23 deaths. In 2023, 23 people died on a single day in Kedarnath due to heavy snowfall. Last year, a total of 56 lakh persons took the yatra and 223 pilgrims died.

On Friday, a chopper en route to Kedarnath, carrying six pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, developed a fault in its hydraulic system but, there were no casualties.

Vinay Shankar Pandey, the Commissioner of Garhwal said, “We had to stop pilgrims from proceeding upwards for a week, but now things are streamlined." This, he said, was the result of people reaching Uttarakhand and then registering for the yatra. Rishikesh and Haridwar are the most popular starting points for the yatra. According to government orders, the concerned officers will be answerable if visitors reach the state before the allotted date of the yatra. For now, all registrations are on hold till May 31.

In addition, there have been incidents of fake registrations and FIRs have been registered against 10 tour operators.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed that special attention be paid to cleanliness and sector magistrates are required to provide updates every two hours.

Shri Badrinath Kedarnath Mandir Samiti chairperson, Ajendra Ajay said, “The number of tourists has been beyond capacity. This led to some initial difficulties. Government measures have now smoothened things”.

Best time for Char Dham Yatra

The best time for the Char Dham Yatra is generally during the summer and early autumn months, when the weather is more favorable for travel and pilgrimage. Late April to June (Spring):  This period marks the beginning of the pilgrimage season. The weather is relatively mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from comfortable to slightly warm. The snow begins to melt, making the trekking paths more accessible. Late September to Early November (Autumn):  This is the second window for the Char Dham Yatra, often referred to as the post-monsoon season. The weather during autumn is cool and crisp, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. The landscapes are vibrant with post-monsoon greenery. Important Considerations: Monsoon (July to September): It is generally not recommended to undertake the Char Dham Yatra during the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall, landslides, and challenging trekking conditions. The region experiences increased risks during this period.

Pilgrims are encouraged to plan their journey during the recommended time frames, taking into account their physical fitness, health conditions, and any specific travel advisories. Always stay informed about the current weather conditions and be prepared for changes in the itinerary based on unforeseen circumstances.

Travel firms, hotels see a demand surge on pilgrimage circuit

Spiritual tourism is on a rise.

New Delhi: Traffic gridlocks notwithstanding, travellers have been visiting popular pilgrimage destinations across the country this year, with travel companies seeing a rise in demand ranging from 30% to 100% compared to the last summer season.

Despite the heat, this year's pilgrimage season has started strongly, with travellers heading to Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Uttarakhand, the Char Dham circuit, and Tirupati.

char dham yatra group tour

Travel agency Thomas Cook (India) Ltd has witnessed a 100% increase in bookings over the last year for its Char Dham yatras, with growing interest among younger, millennial travellers. For them, the company has tailored a 'Pilgrimage Plus' offering, which combines temple visits with local experiences like cuisine trails and outdoor activities. It has also introduced aerial helicopter 'darshans' (view) for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat mountain peaks in Uttarakhand, in collaboration with the state's tourism board, which are already sold out for this summer.

The surge of tourists has also prompted travel agencies and hotel companies to strengthen their offerings for religious and pilgrimage travel. For Sarovar Hotels & Resorts, which operates hotels like Park Inn in locations including Ayodhya, Bodh Gaya, Badrinath, Haridwar, Somnath, Junagarh, Mathura, Vrindavan, and Tirupati, this segment of the business will contribute significantly to its overall revenue, with about a 15% share coming from these locations.

However, Ajay Bakaya of Sarovar Hotels makes a clear distinction between religious and spiritual tourism. Spiritual tourism is not the same. It is led mainly by travellers who go to locations like Rishikesh etc. But from a religious standpoint, it is destinations like Ayodhya and Varanasi which, more recently, have shown "remarkable growth", he said.

Huge demand

"Demand for religious destinations has always been huge. However, most people engaging in religious tourism are not seeking luxury but rather focus more on austerity. Thus, there's a bigger market for mid-market hotels and even more so for the lower end of the pyramid, which is under-supplied," said Bakaya.

The hotel industry is projected to record a 7-9% revenue growth in FY25, underpinned largely by domestic leisure travel, including pilgrimage tourism among other factors, said data from ratings agency ICRA.

Earlier this month, Tata group-owned Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) signed a hotel in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, as a greenfield construction under its Gateway hotel brand with 160 rooms, while Sarovar Hotels & Resorts opened a Tulip Inn in the pilgrimage city of Shravasti, in the same state.

"We have noticed over the years that pilgrim tourism is impacted less by economic downturns than other segments, which we have particularly witnessed during and after the pandemic. In general, most spiritual/pilgrim destinations have been seeing an uptick, with our hotels in Haridwar, Katra, Rishikesh, Dwarka (Gujarat) etc. performing well. Further, with the Char Dham dates starting this month, we have witnessed growth in both occupancy and room rates in key markets like Dehradun (for Badrinath), Dwarka and Bhubaneswar (for Puri)," said Harleen Mehta, senior vice-president, sales, Lemon Tree Hotels Ltd.

Also read | Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, and more; here's a list of famous temples in Ayodhya

Online travel agency Yatra Online has seen a steady increase in the Char Dham pilgrims with a special focus on Ayodhya, and has recorded phenomenal numbers this year because of the novelty factor (the Ram temple in Ayodhya was inaugurated in January) and a general shortage of inventory. It said there are also no registration slots left for the Char Dham yatra. Other religious destinations like Tirupati, Vrindavan, Ujjain, and Amritsar have seen a jump, too. Badrinath, and Varanasi have been destinations with a strong footfall.

Slow recovery

According to the most recent data from the Union ministry of tourism, India had about 173.1 crore domestic tourists in 2022, growing 55% over 2021, but still below 2019, when the figures were 232.2 crore.

The story is no different in Uttar Pradesh. There are 24 flights operating from Ayodhya to other cities with some routes being serviced twice a week and others four times a week, including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad. Interestingly, while it is still early days for Ayodhya, the state's tourism board said it is Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath temple that has the highest footfall among the religious tourism sites in Uttar Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh tourism, for instance, which has already surpassed its inbound tourist numbers of 2019 by about 2.3 crore visitors, saw a footfall of about 11 crore visitors in the calendar year of 2023. About 5.2 crore travellers visited Ujjain that year. Of the top ten most visited sites in the state, five were religious destinations - Ujjain, Maihar, Chitrakoot, Omkareshwar, and Salkanpur.

"Our focus has been on promoting religious tourism and enhancing tourism infrastructure, cultural heritage, and showcasing. This is driving the growth," said Shekhar Shukla, principal secretary, tourism and culture, and managing director of the state's tourism board.

“Searches for spiritual destinations on our platform have surged by nearly 97% in the last two years. During this period, the contribution of spiritual tourism to our holiday business has steadily increased from 7% in 2022 to 10% in 2023 to over 13% in 2024. We have also observed significant y-o-y growth in the top spiritual destinations from 2023 to 2024. These destinations include Uttar Pradesh (Ayodhya and Varanasi) with a 110% growth, Uttarakhand (Char Dham, Haridwar, Rishikesh) with a 42% growth, Gujarat (Somnath and Dwarka) with a 37% growth, Tamil Nadu (Rameswaram), Andhra Pradesh (Tirupati) with a 19% growth, and Jammu and Kashmir (Katra) with a 12% growth," said Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip.

"In our pilgrimage offerings, 45% of bookings are from families, with most bookings coming from individuals aged 36-50 years, and the average trip typically lasts five nights. Given the rate at which spiritual tourism is growing in India, we expect more investments in hospitality and infrastructure. This surge in interest is not only enhancing business but also stimulating local economies, creating jobs, and promoting cultural heritage conservation," Magow added.

Since the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, there is an uptick in traffic of devotees looking to visit the temple, with the summer season seeing a 550% growth in searches for Ayodhya, said Booking.com which mainly relies on search data. Destinations like Ujjain saw a growth of 86%, Badrinath 40%, Varanasi and Shirdi 20% each.

Historic start for Char Dham Yatra: Uttarkashi welcomes over 3,60,000 pilgrims

During his visits to various stops along the Gangotri Yatra route, he emphasized the necessity of keeping travel arrangements tight.

The Char Dham Yatra, which began on May 10 this year, encompasses the sacred Hindu pilgrimage circuit of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.

Uttarkashi, home to Yamunotri and Gangotri, has been a focal point of devotion as pilgrims flock to these revered sites. The River Yamuna, originating from the Yamunotri Glacier, adds to the spiritual significance of the journey.
