FAQs for Filipino Travelers to Japan following the changes in entry guidelines beginning October 11, 2022

Beginning October 11, 2022, Japan has opened up for individual / independent travel, as well as loosening some border control measures for travelers. We are posting here some Q&As specific for Filipino Travelers to Japan. We hope that the information below will help you prepare for your trip to Japan.

Frequently Asked Questions (Last Updated on 11 October 2022)

Can I visit Japan on my own now?

Yes, beginning October 11, 2022, FIT or individual travel will be allowed. Tourists are no longer required to avail of guided / unguided tour packages to visit Japan.

Is the Philippines a visa-free country?

No, the Philippines is not part of the 68 visa-exempt countries / regions . Filipinos are still required to possess a visa when they visit Japan.

Can JNTO help me with my visa application?

No, since JNTO is a separate organization from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines. The Embassy has full control over the visa process. The visa information we report is from the Embassy's  Visa/Consular website , so please check their website occasionally for updates regarding the visa process. You may course your visa application through any one of the Embassy's accredited agencies .

Can I use my existing multiple entry visa to visit Japan?

Yes, beginning October 11, 2022, the multiple entry visa's suspension has been lifted, so unexpired multiple entry visas can be used to visit Japan. Please check the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for updated information.

My unexpired multiple entry visa is in my old passport. Can I still use it?

Yes, as long as your multiple entry visa is not yet expired, you just need to bring your old passport with you when you visit Japan. Please check the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for updated information.

My multiple entry visa expired before October 11, 2022. Can I apply for a new one?

Yes, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines started accepting visa applications of all types beginning October 4, 2022. You may course your visa application through any one of the Embassy's accredited agencies .

I had a multiple entry visa but I went to Japan recently using a single entry ERFS visa. Can I still use my multiple entry visa?

No, because the multiple entry visa was cancelled when you were issued a single entry ERFS visa. You will have to apply for a new visa. Please check the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for updated information.

I want to join a package tour. Does my visa application still have to go through the ERFS?

No, because beginning October 11, 2022, the Certificate of Registration to the Entrants, Returnees Follow-Up System (ERFS) will no longer be required. The visa application process will be like how it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. You may visit the Embassy's Visa/Consular website for more details.

Can I enter Japan even if I am unvaccinated / partially vaccinated / vaccinated with vaccines that are not recognized by the Japanese Government?

Yes, as long as you take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and must present a negative result before boarding your flight.

Is it still required to take an RT-PCR test before entering Japan?

No, as long as you have a valid vaccination certificate , which can prove that you are fully vaccinated with vaccines that are recognized by the Japanese Government. If the vaccination certificate does not fulfill all of the conditions, then you have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and must present a negative result before boarding your flight.

Can I use the vaccination certificates I got from the Local Government Unit (LGU)?

No, because  VaxCertPH and the Bureau of Quarantine - International Certificate of Vaccination (BoQ ICV) are the official vaccination certificates from the Philippines that are recognized by the Japanese Government. Vaccination cards provided by the local government cannot be used.

I am fully vaccinated with booster/s using vaccines that are recognized by the Japanese Government, but my VaxCertPH certificate has some missing doses. Can I still use this?

No, because the vaccination certificate should show a minimum of three doses. Please ask VaxCertPH to fix this for you. In the event that fixing the details in your VaxCertPH document is not possible before your flight, you will instead have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and have to present a negative result before boarding your flight.

My first two doses are in one VaxCertPH certificate, while my booster/s are in another VaxCertPH certificate, so I have two VaxCertPH documents. Can I use both?

No, because there should only be one VaxCertPH document to be used as an official vaccination certificate. Please ask VaxCertPH to fix this for you. In the event that fixing the details in your VaxCertPH document is not possible before your flight, you will instead have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and have to present a negative result before boarding your flight.

I was vaccinated with Sinovac. Do I still have to take an RT-PCR test?

No, as long as you possess a valid vaccination certificate . Sinovac is one of the vaccines found in the World Health Organization's Emergency Use List, which the Japanese Government started using beginning October 11, 2022.

I was vaccinated with Sputnik V. Do I still have to take an RT-PCR test?

Yes, because Sputnik V is NOT found in the World Health Organization's Emergency Use List, which the Japanese Government started using beginning October 11, 2022. You will have to take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before your departure to Japan, and have to present a negative result before boarding your flight.

Do my children have to take an RT-PCR test before we enter Japan?

  • Children (under 18 years of age) who possess valid vaccination certificates are NOT REQUIRED to obtain a negative certificate of testing for COVID-19 conducted within 72 hours before departure.
  • For children (under 18 years of age) without a valid vaccination certificate: if they are accompanied by a guardian / parent with a valid vaccination certificate and the said guardian / parent will supervise them, the children will be treated as holders of valid vaccination certificates, and submission of the negative certificates is exempted the same as the guardian as an exception.
  • If children (under the age of 18) without vaccination certificates enter Japan by themselves (without being accompanied by a guardian / parent with a valid vaccination certificate), they are not eligible for the above exception. They must take a valid RT-PCR test within 72 hours before their departure to Japan, and they have to present a negative result before boarding their flight.
  • In case the accompanying guardian / parent does not hold a valid vaccination certificate and enters Japan with a negative certificate, preschool-aged children (generally under the age of 6) are not required a negative certificate.

You may learn more in the MHLW's Q&A on the New Border Measures  guide.

Is travel insurance still required when visiting Japan?

Travel insurance is not required, but we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for your trip to Japan. There is no set amount on how much, but the travel insurance should cover for medical expenses related to COVID-19 (among other coverage and services) during your stay in Japan. This may help shoulder medical costs in the event that you contract COVID-19 while in Japan.

Do I need to take an RT-PCR test when I leave Japan for another country after my visit?

Japan's infection control procedures are only applicable upon entry to Japan. Exiting Japan for another country will be subject to the next country's infection control procedures, so please check the entry requirements for the other country before departing from Japan.

For a more detailed look at the general guidelines, we encourage you to visit JNTO's special website designed for travelers who wish to visit Japan during this time. The website contains step-by-step guides on preparing for your trip to Japan.

We hope to see you again in Japan!

Hi, did you visit Japan during Spring? We're planning to visit on mid of February 2019 but I want to see cherry blossoms so bad. Are you aware if I will be able to see some or should I just forget my dream?

hi, just want to ask, if i will be roaming around the city of tokyo (just the inner city) following your itineraries for the inner city, is the 3 day-unlimited subway pass worth it? i dont plan to go to the neighboring cities. just around tokyo. usually tsukiji, ueno, asakusa, shinjuku odaiba and roponggi are the places i want to to go during my 4-day stay. im torn between sticking to the ICOCA card(coz i'll be coming from osaka) and TOKYO Subway pass. or should i only stick to the ICOCA card? appreciate your advise :-)

travel japan from philippines

very informative. thanks this is very useful. planning to visit japan in oct. !!!

thanks for this tips. i love it!

Question lang, bakit kahit may Tokyo Subway Pass ka, nagbabayad ka pa rin sa ibang routes? Hindi ba kasama yun sa Tokyo Metro Pass?

Hi, planning a trip to japan and crossing s.korea trip then of course back phils. Have you been tried this travel scheme?

Love the content! Big thanks to this! Keep it up!

Hi Mervz, Thank you for sharing this, our trip to tokyo is next week na! Weeeh! -sherwin (qbe)

Hi! I need someone to talk to directly on msgr. regarding this DIY trip to Tokyo. Hope you colud help me. Big thanks in advance!

Hi! Did you already book your accommodation here in PH or, when you are already in japan?

Mahirap na maghanap nag hostel na tag P1,000 ngayon. Even capsule hotels, parang nasa P1,500/night. Also, if you arrive in Japan at 11:35am, most likely, your return flight leaves at around 12:30pm. So sa 3rd day, wala kana magagawa since you need to be at the airport 2 hours before flight, then travel time pa.

How To Get Japan Visa in the Philippines: A Complete Guide for First-Time Tourists

How To Get Japan Visa in the Philippines: A Complete Guide for First-Time Tourists

Japan is easily on top of many Filipinos’ travel bucket list, but the idea of going to the land of the rising sun seems too far-fetched.

Apart from being an expensive country to visit, Japan is also known for its strict visa requirements.

Although the Japanese Embassy has stringent rules for visa applications, applying for a Japan visa is actually easier than you’d expect. In fact, Japan has recently relaxed its visa policies for Filipino visitors.

With a visa to Japan, you’re just a few steps closer to experiencing its unique culture and charm—from postcard-worthy cherry blossoms to authentic ramen and all things kawaii !

Having this visa also makes it easier for you to enter other countries. For example, if you have a valid or expired Japan visa, you may easily get approved for a three-month multiple-entry visa to Taiwan.

Sounds exciting, right? So get your Japan visa application started! Let this detailed guide help you earn the right to visit your dream destination.

japan visa 1

Japan issues several types of visas—for either single or multiple entry—to foreign visitors.

Each visa type is meant for a specific purpose, like sightseeing, visiting friends, or getting medical services, to name a few.

Requirements also vary per visa type. For example, a certificate of employment is required if you’re traveling to Japan for commercial purposes (e.g., attending business meetings, conferences, training, etc.) but not when you’re applying for a tourist visa.

Likewise, you can’t work in Japan with a tourist visa. You’ll need a working visa to get a job legally in the country .

So before you apply for a Japan visa, know the right type of visa you need according to your purpose of visit. This will save you from the trouble of going back and forth to submit the correct documents.

READ: What are the different types of Japan visa?

This guide focuses on a single-entry tourist visa application for Filipinos who will visit Japan for the first time and make their own travel arrangements.

If you’ll go to Japan for another purpose, refer to the official website of the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines for more information.

2. Complete the Japan visa requirements

japan visa 2

Once you’ve decided to apply for a tourist visa to Japan, prepare all the necessary documents for your application.

The Japanese Embassy accepts only original copies and printed documents on A4-size paper.

Here’s a checklist of Japan visa requirements for visitors from the Philippines, including the specs for each document:

a. Philippine passport .

  • Valid for more than six months
  • With signature and at least two blank pages
  • In good condition

b. Duly accomplished Japan visa application form .

japan visa application form

The Japan visa application form can be downloaded from the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines website .

You can also get a form at the entrance of the Embassy of Japan or any accredited travel agency (Check the travel agency list on Step #3).

Take heed of the following reminders when accomplishing the Japan visa application form:

  • In case you need help in filling out the form, here’s a detailed guide you can follow .
  • Instead of accomplishing the form on the day of your visa application, download it in advance from the Japanese Embassy website and then fill it out. This way, you’ll save time and avoid causing delays to other applicants when you’re applying for a visa.
  • You can fill out the visa application form either by hand or digitally in BLOCK LETTERS (or capital letters) and black ink or font.
  • If your handwriting is hard to read, you’re better off typing your answers on a computer. It’s easy to add text to the digital form in PDF format and make corrections without erasures.
  • When you’re done, print your accomplished digital application form on an A4 paper and sign it.
  • If you choose to submit a handwritten form, make sure it is easy to read, is not stapled, has no erasure, and has no blank field. If a question doesn’t apply to you, just write N/A.

The Japanese Embassy requires all tourist visa applications to be filed through an accredited travel agency.

The agency will submit your application for you. No need to go to the Embassy of Japan for an interview.

To date, seven travel agencies in the Philippines are authorized to receive visa applications. All of them accept walk-in applications from Mondays to Saturdays.

A few offices located in malls operate on Sundays. Most agencies are closed on Sundays and holidays.

In alphabetical order, here’s a list of Japanese Embassy-accredited travel agencies along with their contact information.

4. File your Japan visa application

japan visa 4

It’s best to make a personal appearance when applying for a Japan visa. Go to the office of your chosen travel agency and get a queue number at the entrance. Submit all the Japan visa requirements when your number is called.

The agent will then check your documents. If they’re all good, you’ll proceed to the window for the visa processing fee payment. The Japan visa itself is free, but travel agencies charge a fee ranging from Php 800 to Php 1,500+ for their services.

Here are the Japan visa processing fees per travel agency:

After paying for the processing fee, you’ll be issued a receipt. Keep your receipt, as you’ll use it later to claim your passport (with a visa, hopefully!).

Travel agencies like Friendship Tours, Reli Tours, and UHI don’t accept visa application filed by a representative, except when it’s done on behalf of minors or senior citizens .

If you’ll travel to Japan with children under age 18 or elderly aged 60 and above, you may apply for their visas. Parents or siblings (of legal age) can file a visa application for minors, while children (of legal age) can do so for their senior parents.

Representatives should present a signed authorization letter from the applicant, applicant’s ID, representative’s ID, and any proof of relationship with the applicant such as a birth certificate.

If you live far from any agency and cannot apply for a visa personally, you may send your documents through a courier.

Contact your chosen agency to know what courier you can use and how much it costs. Attic Tours, for example, charges a PHP 300 courier fee.

japan visa 5

Japan visa processing typically takes two to seven working days. In some cases, it may even take weeks.

Wait for the agency to call, text, or email you. When it does, the agency either requests for additional documents or notifies that your passport is ready for pickup in its office.

If you’re asked to submit additional requirements, do so within three months to avoid the cancelation of your visa application.

If your passport has not been returned after over a week, you may follow up on your visa application status with the Japanese Embassy through any of the following:

  • Email: [email protected]
  • Telephone: (02) 834-7514 / (032) 231-7321/231-7322 / (082) 221-3100/3200

When verifying the status, provide the eight-digit acceptance number on your receipt.

japan visa 6

Get your passport from the travel agency’s office only after you’ve been informed that it’s available for pickup. Or you can receive it through the mail. It depends on your prior arrangement with the agency.

If you can’t claim your passport personally, anyone who’ll travel with you can get it on your behalf. Just have your representative submit your signed authorization letter and a photocopy of your ID.

You’ll know whether your Japan visa application is approved or rejected only when you’ve received your passport.

You’ve been issued a visa if your passport has a white sticker at the back. If the sticker on your passport is red, your application has been declined.

Tips and Warnings

First time to visit Japan? Your safest bet is to request for 15 days of stay or shorter on a single-entry visa. This will help you increase your chance of visa approval.

Applying for a longer stay or multiple-entry tourist visa as a first-timer may give the Embassy the impression that you’re trying to find a job in Japan. In that case, you’ll be denied a Japan visa.

You can travel again to Japan after you get approved for a single-entry visa. You might even get approved for a multiple-entry visa with a longer stay on your next application.

To be approved for a visa, you need proof that you can fund your travel in Japan.

But what if you don’t have a job? What if you’re earning irregular income? What if you don’t have enough show money in your bank account?

In any of those cases, you can still get a Japan visa if you apply with a guarantor who will sponsor your trip. Ideally, your guarantor is an immediate family member—a parent, sibling, or spouse—who is financially capable of covering all or part of your travel expenses.

It doesn’t matter whether your guarantor will travel with you to Japan or not. What’s important is that your guarantor’s bank certificate and ITR can prove his or her financial capacity to fund your trip.

You have to be very OC with your Japan visa requirements, as a single mistake or oversight can delay your visa processing. Worse, it may lead to rejection.

Start with making a checklist of all the requirements you need to prepare for your tourist visa application. It helps to write down the status of each document and update it as you go along.

Some important things to do before you apply for a Japan visa:

  • Check your passport’s condition and validity. Renew your passport ASAP if it is damaged, has just one or no blank page, or will expire soon.
  • Tell the photo studio that you’ll use your ID picture for a Japan visa . This ensures that the studio will follow the specs from the Japanese Embassy.
  • Make sure all your printed documents are on A4 paper. If a document is smaller or larger than the required size, adjust the original size to A4 size before printing it.
  • Double-check all your documents. Make sure they’re correct and complete.

Allow yourself ample time to prepare and complete your documents for the Japan visa application. This will help you spot anything wrong or lacking and make necessary adjustments before you apply for a visa.

For higher chances of approval, you can provide documents—in addition to the Japan visa requirements—proving you’ll come back to the Philippines within your visa’s validity period.

Your supporting documents may include the following:

  • Return flight ticket to the Philippines.
  • Certificate of employment.
  • Approved leave of absence.
  • Photocopy of travel history (including stamps and visas) on old passports.
  • Title of your real estate property, land , car, etc.
  • Business registration papers.
  • Any proof of investments (stocks, mutual funds , etc.) and insurance in the Philippines.

These documents help establish your economic or social ties with the Philippines and assure the Japanese Embassy that you won’t work or settle in Japan illegally.

Queues can get very long at travel agencies, especially during peak periods like the sakura season when tourists flock to Japan.

Agencies also handle tours and visa applications to other countries, so expect the agency’s office to be filled with customers.

Arrive early at the agency’s office so that you’ll be among the first customers in line. The wait won’t be as long as when you go there at a later time.

You also won’t have to go back after lunch or the next day if your queue number didn’t make it to the agency’s cut-off time.

Japan Trip Budget Philippines (With Sample 9 Days Itinerary)

Here’s your ultimate Japan trip budget if you’re traveling from the Philippines. Are you looking for a Japan travel guide for beginners? We share our Japan travel tips with a sample itinerary (complete with most of the popular spots in Japan) on this page.

We had a 9-day journey in Japan, exploring the famous parts and tourist attractions in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone, and Mt. Fuji. We will share some helpful info about our trip and some travel budget tips you can follow to travel efficiently and conveniently as a beginner.

We went for the Sakura Season (Cherry Blossom) on this trip. You can also visit Shibuya Station, Tokyo Tower, Disneyland, Ueno Park, Roppongi Hills, Mori Tower, Universal Studios in Osaka with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Dotonbori, Bamboo Forest, and all the famous tourist spots listed in the itinerary below.

Table of Contents:

Why should you visit Japan?

You cannot miss visiting Japan because it has everything you would be looking for in a place to travel – the food, the culture, the people, and the experience. The food is to die for. Visiting Japan will let you experience their heritage and its kindest people. You’ll be in a completely different world from the past and the future because Japan has it all.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

The best time to visit Japan is every new season . They say that after you go to Japan, you’ll definitely come back again because every season has a lot to offer. Every traveler cannot miss experiencing the particular season of each tourist attraction, whether winter in Hokkaido or Autumn in Kyoto.

The weather in Japan is chilly from December to February as it is the winter season. Spring starts from March until April when the famous Sakura Season ( Cherry Blossom ) also occurs. Summer begins in June until August. Autumn starts in September to November.

How to travel Japan from the Philippines?

The most common route to travel to Japan from the Philippines is by taking a flight from Manila Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport or Manila to Kansai Airport if you want to start your journey at Osaka, Japan. It takes four hours and thirty minutes to reach Japan from the Philippines by airplane.

How to travel Japan with the most affordable budget?

To book the cheapest flights, you can find an airline promo at airlinepromo.net and search for your desired dates. That website will give you the most reasonable flight comparison.

We recommend booking as early as three months before your flight departure to avail the cheapest airfare. That’s one of the best tips we have learned before traveling to any destination.

You can start your vacation in Japan in either Tokyo or Osaka; therefore, you can book for Tokyo (Narita Airport) or Osaka (Kansai Airport). Those are always the flights with the cheapest airfare compared to other airports and routes.

Consider the weather before your travel to know what clothes you will need to pack.

Do you need a JR Pass to travel to Japan?

Yes, if you stay for seven days or more and want to explore many tourist spots conveniently. This ticket will give you unlimited travel. JR Pass already includes train, bus, and ferry. The train is the fastest and cheapest mode of transportation in Japan.

japan jr pass

We also recommend air travel from Tokyo to Osaka or some other farther parts of Japan to save time and money. Bullet train (Shinkansen) is costly in that case, but if you’re really exploring more Japanese prefectures, buying a JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass) is recommended for you.

What are the benefits of using a JR Pass in Japan?

Japan Rail Pass can be used on trains, buses, and ferries across the entire part of Japan. It can also be used on all shinkansen trains (bullet trains) except Nozomi and Mizuho trains and covers all the fees involved.

JR Pass can be used for 7, 14, or 21 days. The price for 7-day usage starts at $279. JR Pass is beneficial if you explore Japan in a week or more.

Japan Travel Guide for Beginners and First-time Travelers

Our adventures in Japan started in Tokyo. Besides the photos here, you can also watch the videos I made to sum up my recent travel to Japan.

We went in the first week of April, the weather was still cold, and it was raining every other day.

The weather in Japan every April has both sunny and rainy days. I recommend visiting Shibuya Station, Ginza, and Dotonbori at night for the amazing lights and sights. Fantastic to take photos.

You can use the itinerary below as your Japan travel guide. It’s straightforward to find Japan’s famous places and tourist spots as every train station will connect you to them.

Besides, every train station in Japan has a kind and approachable staff. You can ask them in English any question about the place or route you are going.

Do not miss experiencing the Onsen (Japanese hot spring) .  Some 5-star hotels offer free Onsen for every accommodation.

onsen in japan

We checked in at Merveille Club in Hakone on the way to our Mt. Fuji tour. Unfortunately, the weather in Mt. Fuji did not let us see the iconic volcano. We will try some of their hot springs on our next travel to Japan.

How to find cheap Japan travel package?

Some travel packages are available for Japan tours, but we find them expensive, so we just made a Do-It-Yourself trip. We saved around $1,000 for our 9-day Japan travel.

I don’t use Airbnb these days because prices go up even when I clear out my browser’s cookies and cache. I like cheap deals from Booking.com for all my hotel accommodations these days. For my flights, of course, airlinepromo.net saves the day.

If you’re not traveling alone, you can save a lot of money on your food expenses since typical restaurants offer big servings and unlimited rice.

Big servings of food for one person can be enjoyed by two. People in Japan are very generous. Just a reminder, though, you can’t take out remaining foods from restaurants in Japan when you dine inside the resto.

Japan Trip Budget Philippines (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone)

This budget travel to Japan includes a full-suite tour exploring the most famous spots in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hakone. It means that you will be able to see and experience scenic destinations and attractions even if you are a beginner or first-time traveler in Japan. • Flight ticket (roundtrip) Manila to Tokyo Narita Airport – Php27,600

How to Travel from Philippines to Japan as a Tourist

Great news for those who want to visit Japan – the country has been gradually reopening from June 2022 and will be fully open starting October 11th 2022! And while there are still regulations as to who can travel to Japan and what they can do while there, the rules are much more lax than they were when the pandemic began.

Japan is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. It’s known for its beautiful landscapes, delicious food and friendly people. However, if you’re planning to visit Japan from the Philippines, you must understand the measures in place to ensure your safety while there. Here’s what you need to know:

Visit Japan from the Philippines: What You Need to Know

Who is currently allowed to travel to Japan?

Travelers from over 90 low-risk countries can enter Japan for group tours or independent travel starting on October 11, 2022. For passport holders from other countries, such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, they can travel without a visa in advance without having to get one starting on October 11.

The Japanese government has categorized all countries into three categories based on their COVID safety levels: red, yellow, and blue. The low-risk countries, which include Australia, Canada, the US, and Britain, are labeled as blue. These individuals do not need to self-isolate upon entering Japan, and triple-vaccinated individuals do not need to get tested prior to their departure.

What is required to travel to Japan, and what about visas?

In October 2022, a visa will no longer be required for tourists from most countries to visit Japan. Instead of applying for a visa at an embassy or consulate, foreign visitors need only:

  • Have stayed in a Group Blue country for 14 days prior to arrival.
  • Optional but recommended : To make your arrival at the airport smoother, download and use the Mysos app. This way you can upload documentation of things such as a negative COVID test and vaccination certificates before you even get to Japan.
  • You must upload the relevant documents to MySoS at least 6 hours before your flight’s departure.
  • To ensure that your reservation is successful, it’s best to pre-register at least two (2) or more days before your trip. You can begin the registration process up to 2 weeks in advance if you like.
  • Make sure your travel insurance plan covers you for any injuries or illnesses incurred during the trip.

For more information on entering Japan, refer to the checklist provided by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO): General Checklist For Traveling To Japan

Do I need to be vaccinated to go to Japan?

No vaccination is required to enter Japan. However, people who are triple vaccinated as of September 7, 2022, will not need to do a Covid test before they leave the country.

Under 18 years old, children traveling to Japan with their vaccinated parents or guardians will not need to bring vaccination certificates. They can also travel without negative Covid tests if they are accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Do I need to do a pre-departure Covid test?

Starting September 7th 2022, triple-vaccinated visitors no longer have to take a pre-departure test.

If you are not triple vaccinated, the pre-departure test is still required. You may seek further information regarding this requirement if you are still unsure of how to proceed.

Do I need to download any tracing apps in Japan?

Besides the Mysos App, which is designed as a Fast Track App, there is no requirement to download any apps to enter Japan.

The Mysos app works by providing you with a QR code, which is scanned at the airport by staff. This will allow them to access your information and verify your vaccination history. This ensures that your entry into Japan is quick and easy, without having to wait in line at immigration.

What measures are in place when I arrive in Japan?

The Japanese are traveling in their country and life is returning to normal, with restaurants and sights welcoming back visitors.

It is important for visitors to Japan and Japanese people alike to follow the country’s etiquette guidelines. Many Japanese wear face masks in public, and it’s not uncommon to see bottles of hand sanitizer tucked into pockets or purses.

In Japan, you will see markers on shop and store floors to encourage social distancing. Digital thermometers are at entrances of buildings along with the sign that asks people to wear a mask when they enter.

The Japan Tourism Agency has put together a nice set of graphics to illustrate the current travel etiquette guidelines:

Will I need to wear a mask in Japan?

Currently, the mask-wearing requirement is still in effect—but only as a recommendation rather than an actual law.

In May 2022, the Japanese government began to allow people to take off their masks more often. The decision was made because most of Japan’s large cities had excellent filtration systems and were safe for mask removal under certain conditions—such as when outdoors or in places with good ventilation, proper social distancing from strangers, etc.

The Japanese are known to wear masks in public if they have a cold or any other contagious illness, even before Covid happened. Since then, it has become customary to do so regardless of whether one is feeling sick—so much so that many people will still wear them when there’s no reason at all.

While official rules have changed, many people remain reluctant to take off their masks in public settings. The latest guidelines on wearing masks in Japan can be seen here.

Are there any restrictions on where tourists can travel?

Tourists can travel anywhere in Japan, but the government has advised visitors to avoid some areas because of damage from the earthquake and tsunami. These exclusion zones include northern Hokkaido and southern Kyushu—the two most distant islands.

Final Thoughts

We hope this article helped you understand how to travel to Japan from the Philippines. Of course, you need to take care of your personal travel requirements, but it’s not hard to plan a trip to Japan if you know where to go, especially now that there’s no visa requirement for traveling to Japan from the Philippines. Just make sure you check the latest travel advisories from the Japanese government before you go, and be sure to pack your passport.

Top 5 airlines flying to Japan

Bad experience... Flight schedule should be on time, ours was 2 hours delayed both ways ,Mla-Panglao-Mla. Priority lane for Seniors & PWD should be practice but our Panglao-Manila flight, both priority & regular lanes boarded the at the same time, the only difference is that we were coming on 2 different lanes. It depletes the purpose of priority lanes.

The biz class to sh doesn’t even have. Tv screen , seats uncomfortable, food terrible and bathroom dirty

Upgrade their seats. They’ve got 20-year-old business class seats in their 777s. The food choices. On the way to Manila and the way back I thought we’re lousy compared to other carriers. The staff was fantastic and very happy.

Continual rescheduling of flights, inflight entertainment system did not work, staff not pleasant to interact with.

Check-in was tedious. They could just have used the electronic boarding passes and counter checked the passengers’ names in their manifest. What’s the use of the early checkin if we still have to queue at the only 1 functioning checkin counter!

I’m 6’2” and the seats were too close together for my knees, very uncomfortable.

everything was excellent the crew the food, crew was extremely friendly but wish there was a tv..📺

So far pal express is much better than Cebu pacific in terms of customers service and in flight crew. And on time departure and arrival . Especially if you're taking airbus 320 plane . But the small aircraft like bombardier . It usually delayed .

We did booked shorter layovers but flights changed and layovers are too long good thing Philippine Airlines give us a hotel in manila but here Vancouver to Calgary too long layovers and there is enough sets to wait closer to air canada and they will open 4am.we were here 1 am .our flights schedule for air canada 8:10am.we paid expensive flights but not happy of lay over Vancouver to Calgary.

Biz class is way below what other airlines offer. The food was mediocre at best. A WiFi was intermittent and movies were dated. Honestly the best part of the trip was that the Mabuhay lounge in SFO was closed and they gave us pass to Air France lounge. My advise, fill up there before boarding plane.

You get what you pay for and nothing more. Wanted a cheap flight and that’s exactly what I got, though it’s human nature to wanting to feel like you got a good deal as well. There was none of that here. I was cheap and they were too. Got to my destination safely and that’s all that really matters.

Nice service. I wish it could provide hot water on the flight.

internet didn't work. No offer of drinks or snacks.

Flight was seamless. Free wifi helped pass the time. Food was okay, just make sure you pre order or pick something up from the airport

Internet connection very poor, means you can not even order items through their own shop.

Paid for business class lay flat seat. Significantly less comfortable than other carriers. No built in entertainment or WiFi. I barely saw flight attendants at all and they wanted to charge me for a bottle of water if i wanted more than what came with the meal (that i also paid extra for). Essentially you’re just paying for a slightly more comfortable seat than the rest of the plane and nothing else

Wifi could have been better. Arrived 55 mins earlier than scheduled :)

Best part are two crying babies throughout the whole 11 hour trip

Clean and comfortable cabin. Friendly on board service. No vegetarian food options and movie options were very limited. Internet was very slow

i liked that the flight crew noticed my discomfort with the small leg space (I'm 6'2") and offered the emergency row. The fight attendants were very friendly, a definite strength with Cebu Pacific. I didn't like the leg space in my original seating.

The seats are too cramped, there is barely enough room to shift weight. This could be easy to endure in a one-hour flight, but not more than that. The crew did not clean up shortly after meals. The tray table remained open because of the meal and ate up what is left of the little seating space. The crew were just idling by for 45 minutes before they collected the trash. The airline did not inspect carry-on luggage. Most of the passengers brought too many bags, too large and/or over the weight limit. This undermines safety and discourages those who pay extra for checked bags just to comply with the airline regulations. If the airline is not inspecting carry-on luggage, why should I pay more just to check in some bags?

Terrible, I will never ever ever attempt to fly on Cebu Pacific. I understand that it’s a cheap flight option but they take cheap experience to the next level.

The front desk and early check in was fantastic and the flight did not have any turbulence

better handling of the checked in luggage. they destroyed mine

Should’ve not separated those who checked-in online and those who checked-in at the airport

the process of paying for the excess baggage weight, the check in process and the boarding process are subhuman. this is an airline devoid of customer service

Cebu Pac has a habit of changing boarding gates. They do a lot of remote boarding. So just be attentive to the announcements, especially if it's near your boarding time.

It was a low cost flight, so no high expectations. The experience was average.

Crew was very helpful because I used a wheelchair to get around

The seats are very uncomfortable just was not a pleasant experience

my flight was cancelled an hour before departure and i have not received a refund yet.

A child behind me was kicking my seat and the cabin attendant noticed and kindly asked me if I’d like to switch to a different available seat. Really nice.

The flight crew was very nice. Had a bit of a hiccup on my end when I checked in flying from Tokyo to Sapporo but the staff was very helpful. Definitely enjoyed both flights.

There was no social distancing on the plane. Lots of people sneezing, etc so the coronavirus measures they are taking are not adequate. Very uncomfortable flight. Also hard to get customer service support by phone in English.

The flight was delayed by an hour . Traveling with 75 year old father was difficult and then when he asked for water he was asked to purchase :-) . Overall just an ok experience.

Overall service is good, the only thing I would like airasia to improve is there seating. Their seat handles are broken as well as the back rest

Boarding with air asia is excellent via organized lines by zone except when there is only 1 gate agent and no scanner, only by tearing tickets??? Crazy

The flight was supposed to depart at 9:25. It departed at 9:00. Im glad we were early and did not miss it.

They wouldn't even allow us to bring water from the fountain on board the aircraft.

Premium seats should have legroom this one didn't have it. I had 2 free checked bag but I got charged for while it shows on my reservation

Terrible airline! This airline just ruined our family vacation due to a 12 hours delay as a result of their operational issues.

Too many flight delays. Airport terminal serving Boracay needs upgrades.

Over 6 hours delayed.. using philippine air fleet planes are beat up dirty and uncomfortable. Have been flying air asia for over 4 years from Manila to Tokyo and kansai as well as several local flights from Manila to Bacolod and Cebu.. 3 planes were down for maintenance and caused havoc.. need to invest in new fleet or seriously clean and upgrade the existing fleet. Will not be flying anymore until fixed. Several options out there now to choose from as air asia prices have skyrocketed.. no point in using them anymore . Severally upset passenger here. They can’t even manage the queuing of Zones for boarding as it’s a crab fest free for all now. No discipline and let the passengers in line to board just run into any lane possible.. and priority luggage?? Forget it I’ve paid for it for the last 6 flights and never got it first.. air asia has turned into a expensive joke.. use Cebu pacific or zip air now..

We had three flight delays before eventually taking off 3 hours late. Inflight service was very limited, but it was a relatively short flight. Luggage was delivered promptly.

Why many Filipinos travel to Japan

  • Wilma C. Inventor-Miranda
  • June 4, 2024
  • 4 minute read

The recent trip we had just this May 2024 as a family was in Tokyo, Japan as a family reunion and at the same time to celebrate my birthday. According to the latest survey of statista.com, the number one destination of Filipinos between January and February 2024 is Japan at 48.9 percent followed by New Zealand at 10.7 percent (a far second) and South Korea at 10.2 percent.

Google Flights shows that the most searched destination from June to August 2023 is Tokyo, Japan followed by Singapore and at third is Bangkok, Thailand. And in Japan the most popular destinations are Tokyo topping the list, followed by Osaka and Kyoto.

Why is Japan a favorite tourist destination? Personally, my reasons to go to Japan is it is safer like Singapore, for tourists to visit.  We already witnessed and even encountered pickpocket incidents in other countries such as in Europe where one of the members of our family was sandwiched between the pickpockets who asked for his wallet and cellphone while we were walking. They did not know we were at the back and when we saw it, my daughter immediately shouted to them to back off. They released him, but the thieves were still inside the coffee shop where we were.

When I saw them again walking towards the door, I shouted “pickpocket”.  We reported them to a policeman (they were still there when the policeman came to talk to us), but sadly the cops said they cannot apprehend the thieves since no item was taken from us. But I understand they already knew who these people are. If an item was actually taken from tourists, police can just put these people behind bars, but they will eventually be released after 4 days if there are no court cases.  And if you are a tourist why bother filing a case when your time in their country is so limited?

In another country in Europe, we were behind a man who was in business suit. These gypsies who were famous in snatching wallets and cellphones suddenly placed their hands inside the pocket of the suit the man is wearing. It is a good thing that the would-be victim was able to secure his wallet and drove away the gypsies (who were in their teens). Later I went inside a famous boutique scouring their dresses displayed on the racks, when a pregnant woman kept following me. The guard of the store then approached her and she went away. You would not suspect she is a pickpocket because she was pregnant.

Japan is not only safer but it is also near the Philippines, has a rich culture and history and of course, the shopping experience (you are assured there are no fake items there) and the food (authentic and unique) make it an attractive destination.

We had been in Osaka and Kyoto before but travelling to Japan makes you want to go back again and again. The people are so polite and not boisterous or loud and disciplined. I love their toilets particularly the toilet bowls which are renowned for their state-of-the-art features. Their toilet seats are heated,  with air deodorizers, bidet functions on the toilet itself not in a separate bidet faucet, sound effects for privacy, automatic lid opening and closing, unique flushing and seat lifting and the design intended to be energy-efficient. And mind you, this kind of toilet is found in all commercial establishments I visited, whether big or small. All the restrooms or toilets were sparkling clean. And I am so impressed.

The culture of Japan of being neat had been ingrained in my mind. Years ago, when we were in a coffee shop, we saw the manager herself pick a teeny-weeny piece of paper on the floor. This stuck in my brain that even when there is just a tiny piece of paper on the floor I remember that manager, and I instinctively pick up it up (of course I cannot do that when I don’t have the time to do so) but I want to do it if I can wherever I am, believing that if we have to influence others with a culture we so admire we should start with ourselves.

In short, travelling exposed us to different countries with their different cultures. We can bring that part of culture which we admire to our country (if it is possible), and start a silent osmosis of a change for the good of all. A lighted candle can either harm by causing a fire but one lighted candle can also illuminate the life of a person and of a country as a whole if used properly.

Be that kind of candle that illuminates.

TOKYO (Reuters): Japan lodged a protest against Beijing on Friday after four armed Chinese coastguard vessels entered waters that Tokyo considers its territory.

The Japanese government said it was the first time that four Chinese vessels carrying what appeared to be cannons had entered its territorial waters in the East China Sea surrounding the disputed islands, which Tokyo calls the Senkaku and Beijing calls the Diaoyu.

"I am not in a position to state what the Chinese side's intentions are, but the intrusion of vessels belonging to China's coastguard into (our) territory is a breach of international law," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told a press conference.

China's coastguard said that it had patrolled the waters with vessels carrying weapons.

It said its patrol was a "routine action" to safeguard sovereignty, security and maritime rights, and a "necessary step" for peace and stability as well as to counter Japan's recent "negative moves".

"We advise the Japanese side to be prudent in its words and actions, to reflect on itself and to stop provocations," China's coast guard said, adding that it would step up what it called "law enforcement efforts".

Tokyo lodged a "strong protest" through diplomatic channels calling for a swift exit from the area, Hayashi said. The four vessels stayed in the area for more than an hour and left shortly after midday, he said.

"The intrusion into our territorial waters is extremely regrettable and cannot be tolerated. We will continue to do our utmost to be vigilant and monitor the areas surrounding the Senkaku Islands with a sense of urgency, while dealing calmly and resolutely with China," Hayashi said.

The two countries have repeatedly faced off around the uninhabited Japanese-administered islands.

China's run-ins with the Philippine navy have also been escalating in disputed areas of the South China Sea.

PH, Japan nearing agreement on defense pact – Teodoro

travel japan from philippines

The Philippines and Japan are finalizing talks for a defense agreement that will allow Japanese forces to train with Filipino counterparts, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said, noting that both sides are "close to signing" it this year.

Teodoro, who spoke to journalists at the sidelines of Sweden's National Day reception Thursday night, has declined to give a date for the signing of the accord, which is similar to the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) between the Philippines and the United States, but said, "it is safe to say it's gonna be signed."

"Hopefully it's going to be signed soon with Japan," he said.

Asked on the status of negotiations for the pact, called Reciprocal Access Agreement, Teodoro replied: "Very close to signing the RAA."

Last May, Kyodo News quoted Teodoro as saying that the RAA would be finalized in July. Teodoro reportedly said that the deal would be signed during a bilateral security meeting in Manila.

Once signed and ratified, the accord will allow more Japanese forces to join annual military exercises involving the Philippines and the United States, including the large-scale Balikatan exercises, and allow Japanese forces to help provide humanitarian assistance faster in the future.

Manila has been expanding maritime and defense security cooperation with allies amid increasing tensions with China in several hotspot areas in the South China Sea, including the Second Thomas Shoal, which the Philippines calls Ayungin Shoal, and Scarborough Shoal, which Filipinos call Bajo de Masinloc and Panatag Shoal.

The Philippines will also start negotiations with France for a VFA and recently signed separate defense cooperation agreements with Canada and the United Kingdom.

A VFA between the United States and the Philippines took effect in 1999 and now serves as a legal framework that allows American forces to visit the country temporarily for military exercises and provide humanitarian and disaster-response assistance.

Australia and the Philippines signed a similar accord in May 2007 called the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement, or SOVFA, which they separately ratified later.

Yakult to open Philippines factory

Japan-based Yakult Honsha has opened a second factory in the Philippines to produce its namesake probiotic milk beverages.

Yakult invested 2bn pesos ($34m) in the facility, which will initially produce 1.38 million bottles a day. The maximum production capacity of the site is expected to double to 2.76 million bottles per day after “facility enhancement”, according to a statement.

The new plant is located in El Salvador City in the northern region of Mindanao Island and will produce Yakult initially, followed by Yakult Light after the planned upgrade.

It is wholly owned by Yakult Philippines, a subsidiary of the Japanese group in which Yakult Honsha holds a 40% stake. Yakult Philippines said “several enterprising Filipino businessmen” own the remaining 60%.

Yakult said that the facility was built in response “to an increase in demand resulting from market cultivation in Mindanao, areas to its south, as well as Visayas”.

Around 51 people will work at the plant, which was initially established in 2022 and will span around 42,000 square metres. Yakult Philippines employs around 1,450 people in total.

The business opened its first plant in the Philippines in 1978 in the province of Laguna located in the southern part of the island of Luzon, where it produces Yakult and Yakult Light.

Yakult’s operations outside Japan started in 1964 with the establishment of Yakult Taiwan. The manufacture and sale of Yakult outside of Japan spans 39 countries and regions centred around 29 companies and one research site, with average daily bottle sales of approximately 31.55 million bottles for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2023.

In that fiscal year, Yakult’s international business recorded net sales of Y215.1bn ($1.38bn), according to the group’s annual report.

Yakult generated group net sales of Y387bn in the third quarter of its 2023/2024 financial year, up from Y368bn the year before. Operating profit reached Y55.9bn, down from Y58.3bn, while net profit fell 6.4% to Y43.3bn.

"Yakult to open Philippines factory" was originally created and published by Just Food , a GlobalData owned brand.
