"The trip far exceeded my expectations…"

Before I set off on the next stage of my travels tomorrow, I wanted to tell you what a fantastic time I had Thursday and Friday on Kangaroo Island.

The trip far exceeded my expectations and was everything I could have wished for. My aunt was absolutely right when she told me Kangaroo Island was my sort of place.

Thank you so much for your help in the planning stages. Please would you pass on my thanks to Greg, Steve and Roanna for their considerable contributions to such an enjoyable and memorable two days.

Rose, New South Wales

"Best 3 days of my life!"

We had Coralie take us around KI for three days. The first day we were with another couple and the last two we just happen to be alone. I don’t even know how to summarize our experience.

We learned so much about living on KI, the animals (how the people rescue the baby Joeys from a kangaroo‘s pouch if the mom had been killed on the road), the weather, the plants and all about life on this remote and incredible island. The delicious lunches were included and we ate at a variety of beautiful locations.

This was the best tour experience we have ever had. Don’t look elsewhere, book with this company.

"We are still raving on about our time on KI!"

We are still raving on about our time on KI. We have both discovered KI sheep yoghurt in our local shops. A great reminder of our KI visit. As a travel cynic long on cruises, churches, museums, town squares, national dress, etc,

I found Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours to be equal to and in most cases better than many off shore tourist operations.

You are miles better than other tours that we have been on in Australia. Speedy, along with all the others in the back office, did you proud. Many thanks to all at KIWT.

Andrew, Western Australia

"If you go to KI, go with these guys. You won’t regret it."

If you go to Kangaroo Island get Peter of Wilderness Tours to show you the place. You will come away with a lot more than Seal, Kangaroo, and Koala pictures. You will come away with a feeling that you fit in, that you were not really a tourist only there for a few days.

You will remember Kangaroo Island but more you will remember the trip itself long after the Kangaroos have faded, save for the pictures.

If you go to Kangaroo Island (which you certainly should do) go with these guys. You won’t regret it.

Terms and Conditions

Bookings are essential to avoid clashing tour times. Bookings in advance are preferred but can be made on the morning of the tour if there is staff availability.

Note: Encounters and animal interactions are subject to change with the season and availability on the day. Please inquire for further information at [email protected]

Park entry is included in the private tour cost. You can also visit the park on the day of your tour during our opening hours of 9.30am-5.00pm before or after your tour.

Please note that Koala holding will not be available during hot summer days and days of extreme weather. If booking during summer, early morning tours are recommended to ensure Koala holding will be able to take place. Our general height and age restrictions is 140cm or over 12 years. Even if the child cannot hold the koala themselves they can still touch and interact with them.  These restrictions are at our staffs discretion and can be judged on the day. Due to strict rotation protocol staff cannot guarantee which Koala will be out for any given session. There is a large difference between male and female Koalas and park staff need to be able to determine that the child is confident and willing to hold the Koala for that session of their own accord. The child will not be able to proceed if this cannot be determined.

All encounters are judged at the keepers discretion and may cease at any given time. All participants must follow all instructions given by the keeper and if they fail to do so may be removed from the tour and not issued a refund.

The Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park does not take responsibility for any injuries that are received during the tours.

Swim with wild dolphins

Experience kangaroo island, ecotourism accredited.

Went on the Dolphin swim and it was absolutely awesome. Andrew took us on the tour and stopped at a few locations where we were lucky enough to spot a rare sea bird and then when we got to the dolphin sanctuary were straight in the water. Swimming right next to truly Wild Dolphins is just such a truly amazing experience.

- Dennis, T.

  • Tour inclusions The Kangaroo Island Marine Adventures team want to make your day with us as easy and enjoyable as possible. Our 3 Hour Island Explorer Tour include a delicious choice of home baked cakes or biscuits, tea and coffee. So unless you have specific dietary requirements, you should not need to bring food and drink with you (but you are more than welcome to!). When you board the boat, you will be briefed on safety protocol, and shown how to wear a lifejacket. Life jackets are not mandatory to wear, however if you feel you want to wear one please let your Skipper know. We also have children's jackets as well. For people choosing to swim with the dolphins on a tour, we provide sterile snorkels and masks to make your swim really fun. If you feel the water is a bit cool, we also have wet suits available in your size (included in your tour price). Please Note: if you do have your own equipment, we are quite happy for you to bring it with you. You are more than welcome to bring your cameras and video equipment along, but please note that we are on the water, so any accidents during the tour are at your own risk. Our vessel is a 'dry-vessel' meaning no water will enter in normal travel, so your gear is safe on board. Having said this, our tour guides are delighted to help you out with snapping some fun photos of your, your family and friends (as we are all keen photographers as well). Please do not hesitate to ask!
  • Tour departure locations Kangaroo Island Marine Adventures has two regular tour departure points that we use, depending on the particular tour you have chosen or the weather. Both are quite close to each other though. Please note however that we have much flexibility to launch our boat from other lovely locations around the Island also. Please contact us the day before your tour to confirm the departure location and time, we work with the weather conditions to give you the best possible experience and they can sometimes change quite quickly. Please do check with us that your scheduled departure point has not changed. Kingscote Departure Point You will find the KIMA Boat at the Kingscote, Bay of Shoals Boat Ramp. The easiest way to find the ramp is to travel along Cordes Road out of the centre of Kingscote. About 100 metres along Gov Wallen Drive, on your left, you will find the dirt road entrance to the Boat Ramp car park. There is plenty of parking and a short walk to the Boat Ramp to find our boat. NOTE: If you are using a GPS, please do not enter 'Bay of Shoals' as your destination, as it will take you to the wrong location Emu Bay Departure Point You will find the KIMA Boat ready to board at the Emu Bay Jetty. The Jetty is located on Hamilton Drive (which faces the ocean), between Hall and Buick Streets. There is plenty of car parking available to the left of the Jetty. Just follow the signs to Emu Bay
  • Accessibility We make every effort to make our tours accessible to everyone. We have two steps from the wharf to the boat, and another step down to the seating area. Our seats are like a director's chair; with strong, comfortable, fabric for the backing and the seat and shared arm rests on a metal frame base. We have a ladder of steps at the back of the boat with a rope for ease of disembarking into the water for our dolphin swims, and getting out of the water when you have finished your swim. We have life jackets for safety, and you are welcome to wear them during your swim if you are not a confident swimmer or just to make you feel more comfortable.
  • Terms and conditions Cancellation and Refund Policy We require a minimum of 6 adults for a tour to go ahead. When you make a booking, can you please tell us the dates you are available so if we don't meet minimum numbers we can organise a time that suits you for a tour to go ahead. Infant price is up to and including the age of two, child price is up to and including the age of 13, adult price is the age of 14 and above. In order to confirm a booking we will need credit card details and a contact phone number, either a mobile phone or accommodation phone before the date of travel. If you can't make your tour due to covid restrictions or your tour is cancelled due to covid restrictions you will receive a credit for a future tour or a 100% refund. If the tour is cancelled by Kangaroo Island Marine Adventures (for example: due to unsafe or un-enjoyable weather) you will receive a tour credit or a full refund. Your credit card will be charged at the time your booking is made, and If you have a need to cancel your tour 48 hours or more in advance, you will receive a full refund. If you cancel the tour within 48 hours you will be charged half the tour amount. If you cancel the tour within 24 hours you will be charged the full tour amount. There are no refunds for cancellations within 24 hours of your tour, or if you miss the tour departure time, or if you just decide not to show up. Tour departure location or time may change due to weather conditions. We make every effort to contact you in advance to advise of any changes. Please call us the day before your tour departure to confirm departure location and time. Please also help us by supplying us with alternate contact methods, just in case.

Guide to Kangaroo Island

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link
  • Getting to Kangaroo Island
  • When to visit

Kangaroo Island is a nature lover's paradise, with prolific native wildlife, dramatic coastal sightseeing and bountiful farmlands.

Kangaroo Island, 13km (8mi) off the coast of South Australia, is one of the best places in Australia to see wild animals like koalas, kangaroos, sea lions and seals. Throw in jaw-dropping geology and a hyper-local food and beverage scene, and Kangaroo Island is a destination that will leave you inspired.

Kangaroo Island is a 30-minute flight from Adelaide Airport. Alternatively, drive 1.5 hours from Adelaide to Cape Jervis and catch the 45-minute vehicle and passenger ferry to the island.

  • Rex and Qantas Link fly direct from Adelaide Airport (ADL) to Kangaroo Island Kingscote Airport (KGC)
  • Car hire is available from Adelaide or from Penneshaw; be sure to book well in advance

There are no public transport or taxis on the island, so the best way to explore is to hire a car or join a tour. If you hire a car from the mainland, check that your provider allows their vehicles to be driven on Kangaroo Island, as some hire companies may have policies against it.

The climate on Kangaroo Island is best during autumn as the days are warm enough to explore the island, and the nights are cool enough to cosy up with a glass of local red wine.

If you want to avoid the crowds, winter is ideal. It also marks the start of whale watching season so you won’t be short on unforgettable experiences, even in the cooler months.

  • High season: Autumn (March to May)
  • Low season: Winter (June to August)
  • Don’t miss: The chance to see sea lions pups playing and exploring at Seal Bay (late May to August).
