Northern Europe Cruises

Cruise to Northern Europe for a special cruise vacation that offers you everything from majestic fjords to glacial lakes.

Not only will you be thrilled by the gorgeous natural landscapes, but you will visit the eccentric and exciting cultures of some truly incredible countries. Indulge in fine Finnish fare like reindeer sausage and smoked herring. Heal your body and mind in the Blue Lagoon of Iceland. Immerse yourself in the history of the Vikings.

Find your inspiration, and enjoy some relaxation when you choose a cruise to the Baltics.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Northern Europe

Scandinavia is filled with countries that constantly rank as having the happiest citizens, so why not visit their hotspots and see if you wind up smiling more? The countries of Northern Europe are known for having long summer days where the sun seems to never set, but then in the winter it sometimes feels as if the sun will never rise. These extremes create an interesting culture and historical experience. Featured below are a few of the best ways to spend your time cruising through Northern Europe:

Hermitage in St. Petersburg

  • Catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. On clear evenings, especially in September and March, this dazzling natural phenomenon will take your breath away.
  • See major works of art in the truly royal setting of a gilded palace at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The Hermitage is located in the Winter Palace of Russia’s monarchs and includes Catherine the Great’s expansive art collection.

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen

  • Be a kid again by attending Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. This site is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and was the inspiration for Disneyland. Also in Denmark is Legoland, an amusement park devoted to the popular toy bricks.
  • Go skiing. Norway is littered with ski resorts and slopes that served as training grounds for many Olympians. Norway has the most Winter Olympic medals for a reason, and they intend to keep it that way.

Grimm Brothers Statue

  • Warm up at a thermal pool in Iceland. Spas have popped up throughout Iceland, allowing people to bath in the naturally warm water of the geothermal springs. This is a popular way to spend a day in Iceland.
  • Celebrate fairytales in Denmark, home to Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Little Mermaid , The Ugly Duckling and more. In nearby Germany you can travel the fairytale route from Hanau to Bremen, lined with attractions dedicated to the Brothers Grimm.

From bustling cities like Copenhagen, Tallin or Hamburg , to the beautiful fjords or the picturesque coasts, Northern European cruises have it all. Northern Europe is distinctly different from any other part of the continent. This is because its ancient settlements combine the essence of their culture with the modern features of today. Scandinavian cruises will show you beautiful locations such as Stockholm , Bergen or Oslo . You will be able to visit gorgeous buildings such as the Akershus Fortress or take a stroll around Frogner Park, and we cannot forget the avant-garde building of the Oslo Opera House, located on the harbor.

A Nordic cruise can take you to the bustling city of Copenhagen, with the famous Little Mermaid statue, or to Stockholm, home of the Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are a nature-lover, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coasts, including the stunning Norwegian fjords, the rugged North Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or experience a unique and breathtaking Northern Lights cruise. Discover also our Artic cruises and get a rare opportunity to visit Iceland  and Greenland . Whether you are planning a trip with friends or family or going on a couple’s getaway, treat yourself to a Baltic cruise in 2024 or a Scandinavian cruise in 2024 and see Europe from a new perspective.

Northern Europe Countries

Have you dreamed of seeing the Norwegian fjords in real life? Are you intrigued by the volcanic wonders of Iceland? Choose a Scandinavian cruise and travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland and discover how these countries mix modern lifestyles with centuries of history and culture. You will be able to not only learn about it but experience it up close during trips and excursions, either to capital cities like Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik, but also to smaller towns such as Trondheim in Norway, or Akureyri in Iceland. No matter where you’d like to go in Northern Europe, we can take you there. Or choose an MSC Northern Europe cruise and experience all the North Atlantic has to offer: from France (La Rochelle) and the United Kingdom (Southampton or Edinburgh) all the way to Greenland (Oaqortoq, Nuuk or Ilulissat), passing through the Baltic Sea to Estonia (Tallin) or Finland (Helsinki, Hamina/Kotka), among many others.

How well do you know the United Kingdom? If you need a plan for your 2024 vacation, there are many hidden treasures within Great Britain and Ireland, the only thing you need to do is jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and discover these local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises act as gateways to other cities and you can even book a Norway fjords cruise or other Norway cruises in 2024. For starters, you could begin your cruise from Southampton, a port city that has always been a bright spot for cultural exchange. Why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? During a stop at South Queensferry in Edinburgh, marvel at the beauty of this city. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble down the Royal Mile for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might get to experience –or hear—the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck on the Emerald Isle, you can stop off at the ports in Cork or Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland. Discover so much more with a cruise around the British Isles in the summer!

Norway Cruises

Did you know that the Vikings main mode of transportation was a ship? They used them to go from one fjord to another. You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will show you some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a stunning landscape that you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop on an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these natural wonders, whether you are taking a trip with friends, a family vacation or going on a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and soak up the natural beauty of these formations. Another prime example of incredible natural formations you can enjoy in Norway is the enormous Briksdal Glacier, near Olden’s port. There you can visit the picturesque houses or go for a hike around the Jostedalsbreen National Park. You can visit even more locations during an MSC Norway cruise such as: Maloy, Stavanger or Alesund in the South; and Tromso, Alta in the far North. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your next vacation with MSC cruises!

Baltic Cruises

Are you intrigued by the wonders of the Baltic Sea? Discover them with an MSC Baltic cruise this 2024 and spend your summer exploring Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and much more. Tallin is the capital city of Estonia. There you can stroll down its cobbled streets, explore its medieval walls, Gothic churches, squares and more. You can also book an MSC cruise excursion to visit the Toompea Castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, two of the city’s most impressive buildings. Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an up-and-coming destination where you can explore Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If UNESCO World Heritage Sites do intrigue you, or you simply appreciate history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. You will be charmed by Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town center. Don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see and more hidden gems to discover in Northern Europe! What are you waiting for?

Northern Europe ports

MSC offers a wide range of docking points for your Northern European cruise. Some are embarkation points and others are ports of call, so you can pick the one that will best suit you to start from, and then which ones you will want to visit during your vacation. Start your trip in the south of the UK, with cruises from Southampton and enjoy your MSC Baltic, Fjords or European Atlantic cruises. We also stop at ports in Ireland, such as Cork, or in the Netherlands, for example in Rotterdam, from where we also organize shorter cruises. If you’d prefer to begin your adventure elsewhere, there are ports located across Northern Europe, so you could get your trip started in France, choosing a cruise from Le Havre port, which is near cities such as Paris, Cherbourg or in the Netherlands, opting for a cruise from near Amsterdam. You could also hop aboard your cruise in German ports such as Hamburg or Kiel (near Lübeck) or Warnemünde. There are many other different options spread across the Atlantic such as Rotterdam or Copenhagen. Choose MSC Cruises, and book and unforgettable experience exploring the north of Europe.

CRUISES FROM SOUTHAMPTON Are you ready for a new adventure from the UK? Southampton’s bustling port is the perfect place from where you can discover the beauty of the North Atlantic. Hop onto an MSC cruise ship and explore Northern Europe gems in France, the Netherlands, Norway or Denmark. Find the right itinerary for your trip and explore cities like Bruges, Helsinki or Stockholm, among others. Come aboard a Northern European cruise at Southampton and enjoy yourself. Once aboard, you’ll be able to visit many European cities. When stopping in Copenhagen, you may book an excursion from those available. You can do the same at ports in Germany, the Netherlands or France.

Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover them during your visit while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll and enjoy the sights of the Øresund strait, or book MSC excursions to see the impressive Christiansborg Palace. Enjoy a scenic river cruise from MSC or enjoy the exciting Tivoli Gardens, the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family or friends. Hop aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities in Estonia, Sweden and Finland.

REYKJAVIK CRUISE Reykjavik is known as the city of spas. With an Iceland cruise, you can marvel at its craters, volcanos, and caves. The piers along the shore host a variety of shops, live music clubs and bars and cafés. Take a stroll up to Lækjartorg to admire the Sófar, also known as the Sun Voyager, a huge modern steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason. It represents an old Viking vessel, with the bow of the ship pointing north. As you will see during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe, Iceland is full of geothermal energy, hot springs, spas and gorgeous skies. Summer is the best season to enjoy a spectacular sunset and admire Reykjavik in the waters of its bay.

Where do you go on a Scandinavian cruise?

MSC Northern Europe cruises branch off into different areas. You can start further north on the Scandinavian Peninsula and choose a cruise to visit Iceland, Greenland or Norway, where you will be able to see the majestic fjords. And then there is the Baltic Sea, located between mainland Europe and Scandinavian and Jutland Peninsulas. On the west, the countries you can visit there are Sweden and Denmark, and on the east, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Explore the Scandinavian Peninsula, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea with MSC and discover its hidden gems on your next vacation. What are you waiting for?

Can you cruise to Iceland?

Our Northern Europe cruises have stops at Icelandic ports such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, where you can dock and experience the beauty of this unique country. When you set sail for your Iceland stopover and first dock in Reykjavik, don’t miss an excursion to Þingvellir National Park where you can see Iceland’s largest lake or head southeast on the island and to find Strokkur, the only regularly erupting geyser. In Akureyri, you can choose excursions such as Godafoss, a waterfall approximately 40 feet tall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, and Dimmurborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava. From waterfalls to craters and geysers, it has something for everyone. Explore beyond Scandinavia with an Iceland stopover on an MSC cruise!

How much does a Baltic cruise cost?

There’s a Baltic cruise waiting for you, independently of your budget. MSC cruises offer a wide range and selection of experiences, which will determine the overall price. Factors to consider are different cabin types and accommodation preferences, the excursions you book, as well as the numerous on-board services and experiences we offer. The earlier you book your cruise, the better the price you will find. Although, you can also take advantage of our special promotions available at different times throughout the year. You can also come across a bargain through our flash sales and last-minute deals. What are you waiting for?

Can you see the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise?

The Arctic viewing season for the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise is from late September to late March or early April. However, the best months to view the Northern Lights are December through March, when skies are darkest due to the darker winter days and the higher probability of clear skies. Keep in mind that while it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in places like southern Finland, you will have a much better chance if you choose a cruise that travels farther north into Scandinavia.

What is the best time to go on a Baltic cruise?

The Baltic Sea is characterized by seasonality. That is to say there is a large difference in the weather depending on the month. Winters are long, cold and dark, while summers are short and relatively warm. Although, you can still experience some weather changes and spots of showers on a Baltic cruise in the summer. Because the Baltic Sea is located between the cooler winds of the North Atlantic and the harsher continental European climate, conditions and temperatures can vary greatly throughout the year. This means summers can be warm and relatively dry, with some chances of precipitation. MSC cruises go to the Baltics when the weather is best, although you should take into consideration how variable the conditions can be when packing your suitcases. Discover a unique part of Europe with MSC and find your Baltic cruise for the summer!

What do you wear on a Baltic cruise?

The best time to go on a Baltic cruise is in the late spring or summer, seasons when the temperatures range between 53ºF and 72ºF. With such a temperature range as that, you will be able to wear anything from shorts and a T-shirt to jeans with a hoodie or windbreaker. We recommend you choose a varied wardrobe and add plenty of layers to your outfits for your cruise, just in case. Also, even though the precipitation rates are lower in May, June and July, we would still advise you to pack a rain jacket along with you, because you might encounter light showers during your cruise. Another detail you might want to consider that the Baltic States experience long daylight hours, especially during the months of May, June, July and August. So, remember to pack your sleep mask if you think you’ll need it. Go on an incredible adventure with an MSC Baltic cruise.

NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISES AND CRUISES FROM UK

Where does a baltic cruise go, what do you wear on a northern european cruise, what is the best time of year to cruise northern europe, what is the weather in the baltic sea, what countries are part of a northern europe cruise, how long is a northern europe cruise.

A Northern Europe cruise can be as long or as short as you want. We have options from 1, 2 or 3 nights to 7, 9, 11 nights or more . For some cruises, such as the Norwegian fjord or Baltic Sea cruises , you will need to choose dates that are available within the months when we go to those areas. If, however, you were thinking more along the lines of a cruise that stopped in France, the Netherlands or the UK, you will have more room to choose, since we have cruises that go there even in some winter months. Once your dates are set, you can join us for however long you would like, at MSC Cruises we are flexible. You can climb aboard at any moment, either for a long summer holiday with your family, for a short while with friends, or for a romantic getaway with your partner. Tailor your trip with MSC Cruises and enjoy the best the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic or the Norwegian fjords, visiting countries such as Sweden, Finland, Iceland or Greenland, and discover all they have to offer this summer, you won’t be disappointed!

Travel Information

Northern europe cruises: everything you need to know to start planning.

Northern Europe is a hot destination, especially for cruise lines. More itineraries are being added, so you have even more choices when it comes to ports of call.

Our first cruise was a Northern Europe cruise, stopping in 7 countries along the way, and it was a really great experience that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to explore all that Northern Europe has to offer all at once.

northern europe 7 day cruise

If you’re thinking about setting sail on a Northern Europe cruise, there are a few things you need to know to prepare. Going on a cruise of this area is certainly not cheap. If you’re going to make the investment, you should be as prepared as possible!

We refer to Northern Europe cruises as the sampler cruise, because you will see many different countries and cities in just 12-14 days aboard the ship, but you only will spend a day or two in each port.

Of course, that’s just not enough time to truly explore a city, but it is a good way to get a taste of what the city and the country might be like so you can decide if it’s a place you’d like to return to in the future.

The hardest part about planning for a cruise is packing for the cruise.

Northern Europe Cruises General Info

One region – many different names.

The Northern Europe cruise region stretches from the British Isles to Scandinavia and even includes St. Petersburg, Russia.

You’ll see that this area is also referred to on cruise websites as Baltic cruises and Scandinavian cruises. They’re mostly all similar but may contain slightly different ports of call on each itinerary.

No matter where you go in Northern Europe, though, one thing is for sure, an incredible array of culture and history awaits you.

Be Prepared For a Busy Itinerary

This isn’t your typical low-energy, relaxing on-board type of cruise. This is an active itinerary, where you’ll be spending time in a different major city each day for up to 14 days.

There’s very little downtime. And while the major transportation issue has been taken care of for you, there is still a lot of planning involved to make sure you get the most out of each port.

The Sailing Season in Northern Europe Offers Great Weather

Because of the cool climate and short summer, the Northern Europe cruise season isn’t very long. The season typically lasts from May to August, with the shoulder seasons offering the lowest fares.

Cruises to this area usually range from 7-14 days, though you’ll find more on the longer side, because of the distance involved. One of the best parts of cruising through this area is the long summer days, with many hours of daylight to enjoy your time in port.

It’s typical for the sun to rise at 4am and not set until 11pm.

Which Cruise Lines Visit Northern Europe?

Major cruise ships docked near old town

The cruise lines that offer itineraries in Northern Europe are numerous. There’s Celebrity , Holland America , Princess, Crystal, Costa, Oceania, Regent, Asamara and MSC to name a few.

You can choose the cruise line that best suits your travel style and budget. Some of them are quite a bit more expensive than others.

All of the lines I just mentioned are high-quality, luxury cruises, so it’s guaranteed you’ll be well taken care of, but each brings to the table a different set of amenities and expectations.

Verandah & Signature Suite balcony

How to Choose the Right Cruise Line

1. Dining Options – What type of dining do you prefer? Make sure the cruise line offers open seating dining, a good selection of specialty dining, and whether they can accommodate any food restrictions you might have. We personally really preferred specialty dining (read more about Specialty dining on Celebrity Cruises .)

2. Beverage Packages – If you want to enjoy adult beverages on board (and who doesn’t!), check out the beverage package offerings to make sure one fits your needs and your budget. We did some extensive beverage package research on our last cruise. See what we found out about whether the premium beverage package was worth it .

3. Shore Excursions – Each cruise line offers a different selection of shore excursions. If you’re planning on partaking in the excursions offered by the cruise line, you’ll want to make sure they have what you’re looking for. Some lines even include some excursions in the price of your cruise, which could be an added benefit.

4. The Perfect Itinerary – Again, each cruise line offers different itineraries, sail to different ports and offer different reboarding times, so you may be able to spend more time in port. You’ll want to consider every itinerary in order to find the one that suits you best.

5. Stateroom Choices – Every cruise line has different state room offerings. It’s always wise to look through the options and the corresponding prices to make sure you’re getting what you expect and want. Check the size of the room, the amenities, the extras and the positioning.

6. Onboard Activities – An important part of the cruise experience is what goes on onboard while you’re sailing. There are many activities that you can participate in on sea days and in the evenings. You’ll want to check out what type of onboard activities are offered and decide if that’s active enough for you.

Be Prepared For Travel Planning is the most important part of any successful trip. Do it the easy way:

  • Find and book the best hotel (our favorite booking site is Expedia)
  • Research flight options (our favorite tool is Skyscanner )
  • Book a tour (we always use Viator to find the best tours)
  • Rent a car through Discover Cars (they search the best deals for you!)

How To Choose the Right Itinerary

The Alcoves

One of the biggest factors to choosing a cruise line, in my opinion, is the ports of call on their itinerary, and of course, the itinerary itself.

Our friends that we traveled with were loyal to Celebrity , so we chose only from their itineraries, but I was almost romanced away by some of the other lines’ offerings. Most Northern Europe cruises hit up 5-8 different countries.

If you have specific countries in mind, you’ll need to shop around. We put a lot of consideration into how many sea days were included, and if there was a full two-day stopover in St. Petersburg, Russia.

We lucked out and found an itinerary that also had a two-day stopover in Copenhagen ! Our itinerary left from Stockholm , Sweden, and ended in Amsterdam , Netherlands.

Some cruises start and end in the same city, which means you’ll be backtracking. While it might be more convenient for scheduling flights, it will definitely cost you a day or two in transit, which means more sea days.

I prefer to spend as much time as possible actually on land, discovering a new city, so sea days are not appealing to me. It’s all up to your preference.

What is a Typical Itinerary for a Northern Europe Cruise?

Nyhavn in Copenhagen

I’ve already mentioned a few of the locations that are typical for Northern Europe, but let’s take a deeper look into what a typical itinerary would include.

The 10 most popular cruise ports in Northern Europe are Stockholm, Sweden ; Helsinki, Finland ; St. Petersburg, Russia; Tallinn, Estonia ; Amsterdam, The Netherlands ; Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark ; London ; Warnemünde, Germany (Berlin); and Gdansk, Poland.

Other ports are located in Lithuania, Latvia, several different ports in Sweden, Norway and Germany , etc.

Here are a few popular itineraries from top cruise lines. You can see that they all have some ports in common, but if you really want to go to Lithuania, your options are limited.

Holland America

The Celebrity cruise itinerary is the one we chose. However, Celebrity has dozens of other itinerary options, as do all of the other Lines, so you just have to hunt around a little bit until you find the one that suits you best.

What I like best about all of these sample itineraries is that there are only two sea days on each, and that there is a two-day stopover in St. Petersburg. That is generally the case for most Northern Europe cruises.

Highlights of Our Northern Europe Cruise

We had such a great time on our cruise. I’m sure, in the end, we would have loved any of these cruise itineraries and any of the cruise lines. But it does pay to be choosy when you’re investing in an expensive vacation.

To get an idea of what some of the ports are like, I’d like to share some of the highlights of our cruise. One of the biggest things you need to consider is what you’ll be doing in each port.

You can go on planned excursions to see the typical things in each port. The cruise line will help you plan and book those excursions, so you never have to worry about the logistics.

You can also plan your own excursions and maybe get a little more out of the experience. We found that planning our own was the way to go, so we had a more individualized trip that we were in control of.

The options are vast.

Great post! Thanks so much for sharing all this great information! I’ve never been on a cruise but now I know what to expect!

I’d go nuts spending only a day or less in a port but get it now. Sampler cruises! If I had very limited time but the resources this would be a great way to do just as you suggest and return to favorite destinations for more exploration. Very comprehensive and interesting

It’s true, Elaine! It’s a bit annoying to only get to spend one day in port, but if you think of it as a sampler, it’s less frustrating.

I haven’t done many cruises but this is a great direction for me since I haven’t visited a number of these countries. Fantastic tips and details. Holland America seems like the best fit for me but I’m going to look more into it now 🙂

Useful tips. Thank you 🙂

Very sorry to see that not all of those cruise ships stop in Gdansk. It’s a great city, definitely worth visiting.

Cruises are fun and allow you to see a lot in a short time. I went on a cruise in the Bahamas, so it was a bit of a different feel. I’d love to do a Mediterranean cruise one day!

This is a great resource. Thank you so much for providing information as well as the sample itineraries. I’ve been on a cruise to Mexico before but I would love to take one in Europe with my family since I know they would enjoy this.

It is a good way to travel with family. Less logistics to worry about!

This was super useful, especially for someone like myself! I’ve never been on a cruise so I especially appreciated the timetables and info on how you choose. Thank you!

I love the idea of cruises and it shows how many places you can see and what you can experience, but I get really sea sick. On the big cruise liners, can you feel the motion of the sea? If its pretty stable and calm, I’d be very interested. The information you give here is so useful and concise. Its great to see at a glance the different options and packages you can go for and the photos are great inspiration!

Hi Kate. If you get really sea sick, maybe it’s not the best option – but I can say that I rarely felt that we were moving at all, unless the seas were choppy that day and then only a slight sway. You’d have to take Dramamine or another preventative med, I think. I had the most problems after I got off the ship. I was swaying for a good week or two on land.

Great post! Yes, if doing a Baltic cruise, we for sure would want at least 2 full days in St. Petersburg. A Baltic cruise is definitely on our wishlist :-). Next time, you might want to try a river cruise. The ships are smaller and more intimate than traditional big ocean-going cruise ships. And they tend to give you lots of time in port for (usually guided) sightseeing.

That’s a great idea – thanks for the suggestion. I think a river cruise would be fun.

What are your suggestions for clothing? Shorts, capri’s, jeans? Is it warm enough to sit at the pool? How about evening wear? This is a long cruise, how much do you bring?

Hi Nancy. What you take depends largely on the time of year you go. I went in early May and capris and shorts was perfect. I like to take a mix of things – skirts, capris, pair of jeans – just to be sure you cover all the scenarios. We packed light by packing shirts that could go with 2-3 pairs of bottoms (rewear your capris or jeans more than once). You can also have laundry done on board. Did you swim while on the cruise? I don’t want to bring a suit unless it will definitely be warm enough. I’m going on Scandinavian cruise the first week in July.

Aline, it will definitely be warm enough in July to swim on the cruise. We swam and/or got in the hot tub a few times.

Few places in the world pack in as much culture per square meter as Europe does… and nobody packs fun into Europe like Carnival does! There’s so much variety across the continent and its islands, and with Carnival you have options for experiencing many of these places by sea. Cruise the Mediterranean and soak in the espresso-fueled, yet somehow unhurried, cobblestone-lined street life from a sidewalk café. Snow-capped peaks go great with postcard-perfect glaciers across Northern Europe destinations… plus you’ll find some of the greenest British Isle views on the same itinerary! Western Europe cruises visit the region from which the explorers of the New World kicked off their voyages. If your head is spinning with all the possibilities… great! That means you have choices — and believe us, any one of them is the right choice!

  • See some of nature’s most dramatic landscapes.
  • Explore historical buildings, ruins and cathedrals that are older than many countries.

Top Northern Europe FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Northern Europe?

Northern Europe is enchanting at any time of year, but May to September is the best period. You’ll enjoy long, bright days and almost 24 hours of daylight in June. Summer for the locals is a time of festivals, exploring the countryside, and enjoying al-fresco dining.

How long are typical itineraries?

Our Northern Europe itineraries vary from seven to 14 nights, with a vast range of choices, whether you’re looking for a week in the Norwegian fjords or a longer itinerary that explores the capitals of the Baltic. You can even sail from Southampton, England deep into the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Nordkapp.

Are there any specific visa requirements for cruising to countries in Northern Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What kind of weather can be expected during a Northern Europe cruise?

You can expect all kinds of summer weather, from bright sunshine to occasional mist, rain, and drizzle. Evenings can be cool. Come prepared for all eventualities, with light layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.

What types of excursions are available?

We offer excursions for a range of interests, from guided hikes to scenic boat rides, in-depth visits to castles and museums, and immersive explorations of local food and drink. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, an individual, a family, or a group of friends, you’ll find a fantastic range of cultural and experiential activities in every port.

Are there any cultural or language tips I should know before cruising to Northern Europe?

On your travels in Northern Europe, you will experience a number of different cultures, currencies, cuisines, and languages. It’s important, and fun, to acknowledge these differences and learn a little about the historical events that have shaped each destination. English is widely spoken in Scandinavian countries, especially in the service industry, although it’s always appreciated if you learn a few words of the local language.

Prepare to encounter a number of different currencies on your travels; Finland, Estonia, and the Republic of Ireland use the Euro, but other countries have their own currencies. U.S. dollars are not necessarily accepted, although credit cards are widely used, and there are plenty of ATMs.

TUI’s Mein Schiff 7 Enters Service in Northern Europe

  • June 14, 2024

Mein Schiff 7

The new Mein Schiff 7 is now in service for TUI Cruises. After being delivered by the Meyer Turku shipyard , the 2,894-guest ship welcomed its first guests on June 12, 2024.

The first cruise sailed from Kiel, Germany and it is part of a series of inaugural activities that will culminate with a christening ceremony later this month, t

According to TUI Cruises, the departure was marked by a horn exchange with the Mein Schiff 1, which was also visiting Kiel’s Baltic Sea Quay on the day.

The two-night pre-inaugural cruise featured a visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, and was followed by a five-night sailing.

Also sailing from Kiel, the longer cruise includes stops in Oslo, Norway, as well as Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark.

Upon returning to Germany, the Mein Schiff 7 is set to be christened in a special event in the Bay of Kiel on June 22.

TUI Cruises’ Environmental Officer Fenia Kalachani will serve as the ship’s godmother during the ceremony.

The 111,500-ton vessel then embarks on a two-night christening voyage. Passengers onboard will enjoy a special program that includes a new entertainment show, in addition to culinary and musical surprises, the company said.

Continuing its maiden season, the Mein Schiff 7 offers a series of eight- to 17-night cruises to different parts of Northern Europe including Scandinavia, Svalbard, Iceland, the Baltic Sea and the British Isles.

In October, the ship is scheduled to reposition to the Canary Islands for a winter season sailing out of Tenerife and Las Palmas.

As part of the company’s commitment to sustainability, the Mein Schiff 7 became the first vessel in the Mein Schiff fleet to run exclusively on low-emission marine diesel. The vessel is also equipped with a shore power connection, as well as catalytic converters.

The Mein Schiff 7 is built so that it can also run on methanol, which with the green methanol of the future, will make its propulsion power almost CO2-neutral.

The 10 best places to go on a river cruise in Europe

Jun 7, 2024 • 8 min read

Cruising down a quiet, traffic-free river, surrounded by scenic riverfront views is an ideal way to see Europe . You can sip your wine while watching picture-perfect scenery breeze past – taking in castles, medieval villages and fields of flowers.

By necessity, European riverboats are small and passenger numbers are often fewer than 200, making these cruises a far more social and intimate experience. There’s also plenty to do and see onshore, and with more frequent stops you can enjoy more onshore activities. Cruise lines are now also offering more immersive learning experiences such as cooking classes and home visits, or activities like bicycle trips and long hikes.

The hardest part is choosing where to go — which is why we've rounded up the 10 best places to go on a European river cruise. (Once you've chosen your cruise, check out our definitive cruise packing guide .)

River cruise boats float down a village-lined river in Germany.

1. Northern Rhine (Germany)

From gorgeous river meanders and noble German cities

The northern section of the Rhine features dramatic landscapes and a host of interesting towns. Cologne (Köln), Germany ’s fourth-largest city, offers numerous attractions starting with its famous cathedral, while Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, is a park- and flower-filled delight. Heading south, the Rhine meanders between hillside castles and steep fields of wine-producing grapes. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their half-timbered houses and Gothic steeples seemingly plucked from a fairy tale. Scarcely damaged during WWII, handsome Speyer is crowned by a magnificent Romanesque cathedral.

2. Southern Rhine (France, Germany & Switzerland)

Explore intriguing towns in this border land

The Southern Rhine forms the border between Germany and France before becoming Switzerland ’s northern frontier. Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany, between a medieval past and a progressive future. Further south, the Black Forest spills into Alsace in the German town of Breisach. Unsurprisingly, given its geographical and cultural proximity to France, the locals here have a passion for a good bottle of wine. Basel, at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders, is perhaps where Switzerland’s Franco-Germanic roots are most evident.

3. Rhône (France)

Indulge in gourmet experiences cruising the south of France

Commanding a strategic spot at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône Rivers, grand old Lyon is France’s gastronomic capital. Downstream, the Rhône forges past Vienne’s Roman ruins and the centuries-old Côtes du Rhône vineyards, opening to sunny vistas of fruit orchards, lavender fields and the distant Alps as it continues south. During the 14th century, the Provençal town of Avignon was the center of the Roman Catholic world. Its impressive legacy of ecclesiastical architecture most notably includes the soaring, World Heritage-listed Palais des Papes .

Sunset's golden light signs on the Italianite city of Passau and the Danube river.

4. Western Danube (Austria & Germany)

Romantic landscapes in the heart of Europe

The baroque streetscapes and imperial palaces set the stage for Vienna ’s artistic and musical masterpieces alongside its coffee-house culture and vibrant epicurean and design scenes. Moving into Germany, the Danube gently winds its way to the Italianate city of Passau . Top billing in eastern Bavaria goes to Regensburg, a former capital and one of Germany’s prettiest and liveliest cities. Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place with a history that ranges from undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire to the trials that judged Nazi war crimes.

5. Eastern Danube (Hungary & Serbia)

Travel a cross-section of Europe’s less-touristed east

The two great cities of this stretch of the Danube are the capitals of Hungary and Serbia respectively. Budapest has something for everyone – from dramatic history and flamboyant architecture to healing thermal waters. Outspoken, adventurous, proud and audacious: Belgrade ("White City") has a gritty exuberance and eclectic architecture making it one of Europe’s most happening cities today. While it hurtles towards a brighter future, its past unfolds before your eyes: socialist blocks are squeezed between art nouveau masterpieces and remnants of the Habsburg legacy contrast with Ottoman relics.

Lush green vineyards line the banks of the Duoro.

6. Douro (Portugal)

See spectacular terraced vineyards, the home of port wine

The Douro region, home to port wine, is simply one of the most glorious spots on earth. The Douro Valley showcases steep terraced vineyards carved into mountains, granite bluffs, whitewashed quintas (estates) and 18th-century wine cellars that draw visitors from around the world. Humble-yet-opulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval center, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals. Its charms are as subtle as the nuances of an aged tawny port, best savored slowly.

7. Elbe (Czech Republic & Germany)

A little-cruised but picturesque stretch of Central Europe

Covering the Czech Republic and a thick slice of eastern Germany, Elbe cruises are under-the-radar options. Prague , not on the Elbe but usually included on river cruises, contends with cities like Budapest and Paris in terms of beauty. Its maze of cobbled lanes and hidden courtyards is perfect for the aimless wanderer. The classic view of Dresden from the Elbe’s northern bank takes in spires, towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings: hard to believe that the city was all but wiped off the map by Allied bombings in 1945. While the city of Wittenberg is first and foremost about Martin Luther, the monk who triggered the German Reformation in 1517.

The pedestrian Pont des Arts crosses the River Seine, linking the Palais du Louvre (shown) and the Institut de France

8. Seine (France)

Cruise out of Paris through northern France

Paris has a timeless familiarity, with instantly recognizable architectural icons, memorable cuisine and chic boutiques. Dining is a quintessential part of the Parisian experience, and its art repository is one of the best, showcasing priceless treasures in palatial museums. Don't miss Rouen is one of Normandy’s most engaging and historically rich destinations, with its soaring Gothic cathedral, beautifully restored medieval quarter, excellent museums and vibrant cultural life. At the mouth of the Seine, Le Havre is a love letter to modernism, evoking France’s postwar energy and optimism.

9. Main (Germany)

A seductive German river connecting to the Rhine and Danube

Rising in Franconia and joining the Rhine near Mainz, the Main (pronounced "mine") is the longest German-only river. From Bamberg to its confluence, it travels some 400km through locks and picturesque scenery, dotted with historic towns. Frankfurt ’s skyscrapers are quite a contrast to the picturesque towns that follow, though it too has a rather traditional and charming old town. Scenic Würzburg is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines. A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A river flows through lush farmland in Germany.

10. Moselle (Germany)

An intimate stretch of the wine-producing German region

Having traversed France and Luxembourg , the Moselle heads through Germany to meet its destiny with the Rhine at Koblenz. It’s a very pretty stretch of river flanked by vineyards, and makes for great leisurely cruising and exploration. With an astounding nine UNESCO World Heritage sites, gorgeous Trier shelters Germany’s finest ensemble of Roman monuments, and is enlivened by a characterful medieval center and large student population. Bernkastel-Kues are lovely twin settlements in the heart of wine country, while Cochem’s castle and pretty buildings make it a visual highlight of the Moselle .

How do I choose a route for a European river cruise?

The two major rivers for European cruises are the Rhine and the Danube. Together, they were once the northern boundary of the Roman Empire. Rhine cruises often run from Amsterdam to Basel, following the course of the river through Germany. Danube cruises start in southern Germany, wend their way through Bratislava, Slovakia; Linz and Vienna, Austria; and Belgrade, Serbia; then skirt the Bulgarian and Romanian border to reach the Black Sea.

While many first-time European river cruisers stick to these two rivers, there are many other options available. In Western Europe, you can cruise through the French countryside on the Rhône and Seine, or check out the vineyards of Portugal on the Douro.

Even on the same river, distinct routes can be offered. One company might zip up the Rhine, allowing you to see the highlights in a few days; another might take longer, exploring smaller places along the way and offering more time for onshore experiences. You'll need to decide whether you’d like to get a look at more destinations, or more of a feel for fewer places.

When is the best time to go on a European river cruise?

Cruises on European rivers tend to begin in the spring, around March, and go through to October. Some cruises, operating in areas where Christmas markets are a feature, run right through December but inclement weather or river flooding could put a dampener on plans. Winter cruises tend to focus on places where Christmas experiences are on offer. Shorter daylight hours mean you’ll see less scenery, but the charm of the festive season has its own appeal.

Choosing your season is very much a matter of personal preference, and there are pros and cons for each season. Summer cruises offer the most spectacular scenery, the longest daylight hours and the best weather, but the towns you visit will be far busier and you won’t be alone in port; in some smaller places, you may have to scramble across the decks of other boats to reach the shore.

Spring and autumn mean less time around the pool on the top deck, but quieter times ashore. Expect rains in spring, but also blooming flowers. Autumn is a great time to cruise the Douro, with grapes being picked and clement temperatures.
