Lionel Richie is a great performer, very personable, entertaining, and of course, a wonderful artist. He engages the audience through most of his show. This is the second time I've seen him at Red Rocks, west of Denver, and each time it is over the top. I personally would have loved for him to sing songs without the audience singing parts of the songs.

Sorry but although he has a great stage presence, he can no longer sing. Felt like leaving after a few songs . Charging me 172 00 for 102.00 worth of actual lawn seats. It was my first time at Ravinia, a beautiful place. Really Do not understand how you can charge so much more.

beth-lopata’s profile image

It was a very good concert overall. I'd like to have been able to hear the singers voice a bit better. It was drowned out by increasing instrumental tones. Lionel Richie's voice still soothes the soul.

Next time attending any concert at this location, I'll be sure to be in the chairs in front of the stage rather than deal with drunken folks spilling wine on me twice while stumbling over the bleacher styled seating.

Review: Lionel Richie revisits classic 1980s hits in Pittsburgh concert

Mike Palm

Lionel Richie, who’s sold more than 125 million albums worldwide along with earning four Grammys, an Oscar and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, doesn’t have anything left to prove.

Yet Richie, who already holds a job as a judge on “American Idol,” is traveling the nation on the Sing A Song All Night Long tour, which stopped Sunday night at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

The singer, who’s synonymous with his sentimental ballads in the 1980s and his time in the Commodores, performed more than 90 minutes of his hits to a multigenerational audience (although it definitely skewed older).

First things first, Richie’s voice does not sound the same as it did in his heyday. Multiple throat surgeries in the 1990s for the 74-year-old (he’ll turn 75 on June 20) perhaps contributed to the vocal changes. But once you get past the stylistic change, Richie’s energy, showmanship and uplifting personality more than compensate for that.

Richie, who hadn’t performed in Pittsburgh since 1986, proved self-deprecating about remembering song lyrics while also flubbing a Pittsburgh reference after giving props to Steelers Nation.

“I understand we’re in Duck country as well,” he said before catching himself. “Penguins, I’m telling you, Penguins. Did I say Ducks? The Penguins country … You want to end a show real quick, say the wrong name.”

Emerging from the front of the stage that extended into the crowd amid a cloud of smoke, Richie and his band opened with “Hello” before a more up-tempo “Running With the Night.” He moved to a piano for the first of several times for a medley of “Easy” and “My Love.”

More @LionelRichie at @PPGPaintsArena in Pittsburgh pic.twitter.com/Ytg0JqkFiE — Mike Palm (@MikePalmMedia) June 17, 2024

After name-dropping Luke Bryan, his fellow judge on “American Idol,” Richie played a country-tinged “Stuck on You,” even dropping a y’all into it.

Through the night, Richie played a bevy of songs from his time in the Commodores, including “Sail On” and “Three Times a Lady,” which might have had his strongest vocals of the night. After playing “Just to Be Close to You,” Richie offered some romantic advice to the male fans in attendance.

“That’s it. That’s all I can do. Let me explain that to you so you understand. Fellas, guys, I’m here for you,” Richie said. “If that song does not work for you, then you’re with the wrong lady tonight. That was the closer, if nothing else. You see, all you have to do, you put your arm around her, look her straight in the eye and say, ‘Isn’t Lionel amazing?’”

Although “Endless Love” was dropped from the set, there was no shortage of other chart-topping hits like an upbeat “Dancing on the Ceiling,” which featured a snippet of Van Halen’s “Jump.”

A funky “Brick House” gave way to two more mellow songs, “Still” and “Say You, Say Me,” where he played piano at the front of the stage. Richie then offered his thoughts on unity and compassion before going into “We Are the World,” which had thousands of phone lights flashing.

With a switch to a red leather jacket — his second wardrobe change of the night — Richie returned for an energetic encore of “All Night Long (All Night)” before sending the crowd out into the night.

Earth, Wind & Fire may have started the show, but they were no typical opening act.

The longtime soul/funk band showed why they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. The band, which has been going for more than 50 years, includes three original members: Philip Bailey on vocals, Verdine White on bass and Ralph Johnson on percussion/vocals. They delivered a crowd-pleasing hour-plus of their hits like “Shining Star,” “Sing a Song” and “After the Love Has Gone.”

Boosted by a strong brass section, multiple percussionists/singers (including Bailey’s son) and two guitarists, the animated White provided a high-energy personality, while Bailey showed he can still hit the high notes on songs like “Reasons.”

The smooth funk of “Fantasy,” with shoutouts to the Steelers and Penguins, ramped up with an instrumental jam and served as the prelude for their funky disco hit, “Boogie Wonderland” and the synth-funk of “Let’s Groove.” The singalong anthem of “September” closed their set.

Lionel Richie returns to Alabama on tour with Earth, Wind & Fire: How to get tickets

Welcome back, Lionel Richie !

It’s been many years since the Alabama native performed a full-length concert in his home state (if we’re not counting his three-song mini set in 2022, closing out the World Games at Protective Stadium), but the wait will be over in spring 2024. The R&B and pop superstar has scheduled a May 28 show at the Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, on his “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, via Ticketmaster. Prices are $40.95, $60.95, $80.95, $100.95, $140.95, $180.95 and $225.95, plus service charges, according to promoter Live Nation.

A round of pre-sales starts at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, and ends on 10 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 18, according to the Ticketmaster listing.

Thirteen dates for the tour were announced on Tuesday by Live Nation, starting on May 23 and ending on June 16. The Birmingham concert is Richie’s only tour stop in Alabama, but he’ll also perform in Southern cities such as Knoxville, Tennessee (May 23, Thompson-Boling Arena); Jacksonville, Florida (May 25, VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena); and Memphis, Tennessee (May 29, FedEx Forum.)

Richie, 74, born and raised in Tuskegee , started his career with the Commodores in 1968, earning initial fame with hits such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” “Nightshift” and Brick House.” He moved on to achieve even greater fame as a solo artist during the 1980s and has remained an iconic figure in the entertainment industry.

Richie’s signature songs include “Penny Lover,” “Truly,” “All Night Long,” “Hello,” “Running With the Night,” “Say You, Say Me,” “Sail On,” “Stuck On You,” “Dancing on the Ceiling” and more. He has four Grammy Awards to his credit, as well as an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Since 2018, he’s been a judge on ABC’s reboot of the reality series “American Idol.”

Richie hasn’t performed many concerts in his home state over the last couple of decades, but he did make a brief appearance as the headliner at the closing ceremonies of the 2022 World Games in Birmingham. Richie’s set lasted about 15 minutes and featured “Dancing on the Ceiling,” “You Are” and “All Night Long (All Night).” It also required patience from fans at Protective Stadium, who waited for Richie to appear at the end of the three-hour program.

Richie also appeared in Alabama in 1997, performing at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame’s induction banquet and awards ceremony at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. The star, who was inducted into the hall of fame that year, played the piano and sang “Easy,” “Hello” and “Stuck On You” at the ceremony, according to a report by The Huntsville Times. Reporter Dean Smallwood said Richie earned a standing ovation from the crowd.

Richie has maintained strong ties to Tuskegee over the years, celebrating his Alabama roots in significant ways. For example, Richie visited his hometown with fellow “Idol” judges Katy Perry and Luke Bryan in October 2023, filming there for an episode of the reality series that’s set to air this year.

The trio were spotted at sites such as Tuskegee University (Richie’s alma mater), the Tuskegee Municipal Complex and Richie’s new Hello Park , named for his famous song. The new season of “American Idol” starts Feb. 18 on ABC, and is reported to have a “hometown” theme.

Richie also named a 2012 album of celebrity duets “Tuskegee” after his hometown. ““It couldn’t be anywhere else but Tuskegee,” Richie said that year during an interview with AL.com . “I am a kid from Tuskegee. People know me there. To pay tribute to them, to put their name on it around the world, is what makes it ever so fitting and proper.”

My wife and I saw your show at the Venetian in Vegas. The best! Please please please come back!

Please don’t forget Holland! We can’t wait to see and join your show!!!

My husband and I went to the EW&F concert at the Rady Shell venue in San Diego, California last night and were beyond excited at the quality of the show. We are long time EW&F fans and have seen the band so many times we can’t count starting in the 80’s and continuing until the present. We went to an intimate show at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas that was hard to beat but last nights show was beyond our expectations. Yes, the Band is aging…we all are. The heartbeat and the soul of the music that we have loved since we fell for the Band was not just present but grown exponentially into a full, boastful, sound of soul. We danced, we sang, we yelled and experienced this to the fullest. What a night and what a great sound! We fell in love again – filled to the brim with the days of our youth and settled totally with the ages of our soul. What a grand experience. Love you Earth, Wind & Fire. You have made our world brighter!

W.O.W. Sold out performance in the, “Cheezie State of Wisconsin”, during the huge Summerfest bash! Can’t wait to get my grove on to the old classic song, “September”!

Will the tour hit Amsterdam, The Netherlands?

Australia please please please

Attended concert in Chicago on August 5th! Both Lionel and EWF were amazing. So many songs, one in particular ” The Way of the World” sparked memories of me playing as a kid, in the 70’s on the SS of Chicago, I cried as I remembered my Dad and Grandma! Thank you Elements!

OMG!!!! These are two of my favorite performers! Just coming from the show in WASH DC Excellent show !!!

Hallo there, As both EW&F and Lionel Richie are my favorites I hope their tour will also come to Europe (Holland)????. Kind regards Jillis Zevenbergen (Holland)

Wife and myself are EXCITED to see Earth Wind and Fire with Lionel Richie….we are excited to celebrate my wife Claudia’s 55th birthday at the concert.

This by far was the best concert I have ever been to. Earth, wind and fire has been around since I was little, and I grew up with them and their music. From the moment they came out on stage to the moment they did their last song, I did not sit down one time!! I sang every song dance to every song, and they are the ultimate elements. I would see them 1 million times over.

Do You ever come to Belgium again?

Lionel Richie on the continuing power of "We Are the World"

By Tracy Smith

Updated on: June 9, 2024 / 10:05 AM EDT / CBS News

In the universe of pop music from the 1980s, there's one song that's especially hard to shake. In 1985, "We Are the World" was made to raise money for food aid to Africa. The song, and the saga of recording it, are now the subject of a Netflix documentary, "The Greatest Night in Pop."

Lionel Richie co-wrote the song, and he's the man who helped 46 of the biggest music stars on Earth record it in one crazy, all-night session in January 1985.

How did he do it? " Naiveté, number one," he replied. "And number two, we didn't have any distractions. There was no internet. There was no cell phone. There was nothing but purity of a thought, an idea, and how to get it done."

It all started with "Do They Know It's Christmas," the British charity single meant to raise awareness (and open wallets) for food aid to famine-ravaged Africa. Singer and philanthropist Harry Belafonte thought American artists could do the same, so he called super-agent Ken Kragen to help round up talent, and Kragen got Richie and Michael Jackson to write a song. "At the beginning, there was no terror at all, because we had no deadline – Whenever you could write it, we can write it. There's no problem ," said Richie.

They wrote at Jackson's house, with all of his pets, including a large snake, which rattled Richie: "I'm trying to write the lyrics to this song, and I'm screaming, and he's going, ''He wants to play with you, Lionel.'"

But Kragen kept calling more big names to join in, and the project started to snowball. "And next thing I know, Kragen calls on the phone and says, 'Ah, Bruce is in. Dylan's in.' 'Dylan, you mean, Bob Dylan? What are you talkin' about?' 'Well, Ray's coming.' 'Ray?' 'Charles. Ray is coming.' So, all of a sudden we went from just la-la-la to panic!"

lionel-richie-interview.jpg

Finally, with the song written, they made a plan to record it the night of the American Music Awards in January 1985, when all the big names in music were in Los Angeles. Richie hosted the three-hour show that night, but his main event started afterward, when the mega-stars started arriving for a recording session for the ages: Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and so many more.

Richie described it as "a room full of five-year-olds, and we're all amazed that we're there with each other, and getting used to each other. I call it the first day of first grade. So, you're all in the room without your parents, and we don't know exactly what we're doing. And Quincy's the parent. And he pulled it off."

So how did Quincy Jones keep the big talent, and all of those big egos, in line? Peer pressure. "I kept saying to Quincy, 'Is everyone going to go in a booth and sing their part?'" Richie recalled. "He said, 'No, we're gonna put them in a circle, and they'll be perfect every time we sing.' Why? 'Cause you're standing and looking into the rest of the class. You're gonna be perfect every time. And it was true. A little intimidating. In fact, did I say a little intimidating? I mean, now that I talk about now, it was terrifying! "

But the best moments of the night were when the immortals in the room let their guard down a bit, like when Diana Ross asked Daryl Hall for an autograph. "You just couldn't get enough of that," said Richie. "And then just to sit around and, 'Hey, man, I just want to tell you I'm a big fan,' and then we just melted into this family."

The session lasted well into the next morning, and for those in the room it was trying, and triumphant.

Asked if there was a moment he thought they wouldn't pull it off, Richie replied, "Several times. It was just fatigue at one point, once you get to four o'clock in the morning, and we're now putting on individual parts. Springsteen left the building on the last thing we put on this record at eight o'clock. So, around 7:30, 8:00 was his last la-la."

The single was released in March 1985. It went straight to #1, and raised tens of millions of dollars.

For one brief moment in time the world seemed to unite, just a little. "We actually thought we were going to wipe out hunger around the world," Richie said. "All we needed to do was just tell a few people, and the rest of the world would take over, and the whole world will run next door and save their next-door neighbors in their cities and their communities. And then, about three years later, the world went back to sleep."

But since the documentary premiered in January, there's been a renewed interest. The song "We Are the World" was back on the Billboard charts, and donations started flowing again – in the past six months, more than $600,000 and counting.

To Lionel Richie, it's not so much a song but a gift, and one that keeps on giving. "We raised a lotta money, yes," Richie said. "We kept thinking, Okay, we're gonna give away $5 million. Okay, hopefully we'll raise ten. Once you get to be 40 and 50? Whoa. What the heck just happened?

"But I remember calling Quincy on the phone. I said, 'Did we say we were giving away half the money or all the money?' He said, 'Don't try it. Lionel, don't try it. Don't try it. We're committing all the money.' I said, 'Oh, oh, yeah, I just wanted to make sure!' But then you realize we kept trying to stop 'We Are the World.' Okay, we're winding it down now. And the next thing we know, $2 million comes in. It's still breathing."
