Yes, we do accept demos. We won’t lie to you, we don’t release a lot of records each year and we are very picky, so unless you already are talking to us, the odds aren’t all that great.

Jello Biafra is the final word on which bands we sign. He is very busy, but he generally tries to listen to most of the demos he receives.

Jello Biafra & The Guantanamo School Of Medicine Australian Tour Dates

Having wreaked havoc all around the globe as frontman for the simply out-of-control Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra has announced that he will be returning Down Under with his most current musical project The Guantanamo School Of Medicine.

Together with Rollins Band and Ween bassist Andrew Weiss, drummer Paul Della Pelle (Helios Creed and Nik Turner’s Space Ritual) and the twin guitar attack of Ralph Spight (Victims Family) and Kimo Ball, the band is essentially a super-group and have released music that backs that title. So far, we’ve heard 2009’s The Audacity Of Hype, a handful of EPs and their latest 2nd album White People and the Damage Done , which saw the return of Biafra’s thick melody, and non-stop sas.

Biafra has done his research and hand picked the best of the best for Australian local supports – Grong Grong, Hard-Ons, Useless Children and Zeahorse. Below in the tour dates you’ll be able to find out who’s playing what city.

Though he is no longer with Dead Kennedy’s, Biafra still speaks the truth, so prepare for some total wisdom.

See Dead Kennedys' Jello Biafra Join Ministry in New "Sabotage Is Sex!" Video

Tomorrow (March 2nd), Ministry are set to finally hit the road on their twice-delayed Industrial Strength Tour. Ahead of the big kickoff, Al Jourgensen and his cohorts have offered up the new video for "Sabotage Is Sex," a highlight off the group's latest album, Moral Hygiene , that features the one and only Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys. It's hardly the first time Biafra and Jourgensen have worked together: The pair famously collaborated in the joint side project Lard. "Sabotage Is Sex" does mark one first, however: The new clip sees the punk icon making his first-ever appearance in a music video.

"Jello and I have been friends and music collaborators for decades," Jourgensen commented. "I had no idea he'd never done a video before and I'm honored to pop that creative cherry for him on 'Sabotage Is Sex.' It's crazy how tech savvy we've all gotten yet somehow it all seems very punk rock to shoot a video at home with just an iPhone. Who knows, maybe one day there will be a Lard video?"

Biafra added: "My compliments to the chef!! Not like any other Ministry video either. It's amazing what can be done dirt cheap in your bedroom, with some kool found footage and a few clever ideas. Two phones, two takes and my work is done. Fun! I knew there'd finally come a day where I could bust out those Fez hats kids stole from their parents, and threw at Dead Kennedys on our '85 FrankenChrist tour."

Jello Biafra says new Dead Kennedys reissue was done “intentionally” behind his back

Original Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra has said a forthcoming reissue of the band’s 1980 debut album ‘Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables’ was done “intentionally” behind his back.

The band announced the reissue earlier this month, which has been mixed by Grammy-winning studio engineer Chris Lord-Alge. It’s slated for release on September 30 via Manifesto Records.

Though the reissue was approved by the band’s current lineup, Biafra, who hasn’t been part of the outfit since their 1986 disbandment, made his disapproval of the project clear.

“People are asking, so I guess I have to say something,” he wrote on Alternative Tentacles , the website for his independent record label. “LISTEN BEFORE YOU BUY!!”

Read his lengthy statement below in full:

“This was done almost totally behind my back. Intentionally. It was not “overseen by the band”, as their press release claims. I was deliberately locked out. Not one person from the band or the labels reached out to me at all. Nor did Chris Lord-Alge, who did the remix. I guess he didn’t care, or value anything I brought to the band at all. Without me those songs wouldn’t exist.

In fact, it took several letters from a lawyer for their “manager”, Kevin Raleigh, to cough up much detail of what they were up to. So is it really, “adding depth without losing any of its original energy”?? Not to my ears!!

Sure, some people may like this version a little better, depending on taste. But, “incredible new clarity”? “Taking the music from 2D to 3D?” I don’t think so! What does that even mean, anyway? I hate to say this, but to me it’s….well….kinda boring.

Sure, the sound is a little fuller, a little warmer, with a little more bottom end. But the top-end presence and power, so crucial to full-on in your face Punk, sounds rolled off and smoothed over, even muffly. And East Bay Ray, whose ego knows no bounds, actually turned his guitars DOWN! They’re lower and a little muddier than the real thing. It just sounds weak to me, I’m sorry.”

And why was Chris Lord-Alge chosen in the first place?? Sure, he’s bigtime Hollywood, as big as it gets. But there’s so many others with a better more heartfelt grasp of what Dead Kennedys really is, who I think could have done a better job.”

Al Jourgensen and Geza X both told me they’d love to do it. Who did Turbo Negro’s “Apocalypse Dudes”? That would have been amazing. Matt Bayles? Andy Wallace, anyone? Hell, I could have hooked up with one of my ace engineering partners, Matt Kelley, Kurt Schlegel, Toshi Kasai or Geza, and done a better job myself — for a fraction of the cost. They spent at least three times more money on Lord-Alge than it cost to make the original album!!

Did that make it three times better than the original? Again – Listen before you buy. Yes, Lord-Alge has mixed or remixed Springsteen, Madonna, Celine Dion, the Stones, Linkin Park, Donny Osmond, The Jonas Brothers, even Rascal Flatts. A closet full of Grammy awards, and patents on some serious studio gear. Major label Pop Punk too – a Bad Religion, some Green Day, Good Charlotte, SUM 41; and our favorite OG pioneer, Avril Lavigne.

But Dead Kennedys?? Why??!? Because Raleigh and the Lord-Alge brothers go way back to Cleveland?? I admit I’d had thoughts about remixing “Fresh Fruit..” too, way back when. Catch it up to “FrankenChrist” and “Plastic Surgery Disasters”. Then Tim (Lint) from Operation Ivy asked me what I thought of their now-classic album he gave me, hot off the presses. I said I thought it came out a little tinny, “It sounds like ‘Fresh Fruit..’” He looked me right in the eye, and said, “We like ‘Fresh Fruit.’”

Thank you, Tim Armstrong!! Lesson learned. Don’t mess with the magic. Especially when it means that much to people. Hell, if you really want a true RE-mix album, don’t do a faithful, near-carbon copy of the original. Go all the way!! Get Jourgensen, or get Charlie Clouser, or anyone from the Rob/White Zombie remix albums. Or better yet, get a top, interested Hip-Hop person, or even Electronic people, and really go to town! That’s the true art of the remix to me – slice, dice, add your own beats and make it into something fresh and different.

In October, 2019, Matti Ingham from Cherry Red, along with East Bay Ray’s Facebook page, posted a remixed “Chemical Warfare”, along with a press release bragging that I thought it was “terrible”; as though that was some kind of clever genius “promotion”. https://www.punknews.org/article/73449/dead-kennedys-remix-chemical-warfare-will-re-release-remixed-debut-in-2021

Shit-talk the heart and soul of the band, that’ll spark more interest and sales for sure! If someone at Alternative Tentacles did something that petty and unprofessional, I would fire them on the spot. Then a year ago, out of the blue, Cherry Red sent me a test pressing. No letter, no followup. I listened. No, I don’t think it’s “terrible.“ But I’m not sure I’d fork over 30 bills for it either. It’s not, “Like hearing your favorite album for the first time all over again”, or anything like that.

The cool part for me is that I then went through every damn re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-Re-issue of “Fresh Fruit..” (Cherry Red again). And Boy, some of them sound WAY better than I remembered!! So full-on, sopowerful. I’m even more proud if it now than I think I’ve been in years. It really was like, “hearing it again for the very first time”. It sounds like it was made yesterday. Thanx in no small part to the great Oliver DiCicco (yes, the sculptor) our engineer at Mobius Music who made it all happen – and he’d never made a Punk record before. Good job, my friend!

Ray is now claiming he produced the whole thing himself, when is was actually the three of us, credited to Oliver’s wonderful and inspirational cat, Norm. He’s also claiming he originally designed the DK logo! Yeh, and Trump won the election.. So if you really want to hear “Fresh Fruit” at its best, chances are you already have. For me, the best sounding “Fresh Fruit”s are:

1) The UK remaster we made Cherry Red do when we arrived in London in 1980. From the purple-dot back cover onward, look for “A Porky Prime Cut” scratched in the grooves. That’s George Peckham, maybe the best mastering engineer I’ve ever heard.

2) The remaster George Horn and I did at Fantasy in Berkeley, when AT finally got the US license back from Cherry Red. It really holds up well. I’d thought Porky blew him away. Nope..

3) The short lived Japanese LP on Trio, way back in the early 80’s.

I’m not sure Lord-Alge and Ray’s remix even cracks my Top 10. Maybe… The Wikipedia bio describes the Lord-Alges as, “known for molding mixes for small speakers and FM radio”. If that’s your bag, this is the “Fresh Fruit..” for you. But is it, “A revolutionary must hear experience”? You decide. Just LISTEN BEFORE YOU BUY. Please.”

Biafra and his former Dead Kennedys bandmates have a troubled history, including a number of lawsuits over royalties, music licensing and ownership. Last year, Biafra called out the band for sharing their support for Republicans Mitt Romney and Lindsey Graham, writing: “How dumb and clueless can you get??”

In 2017, they turned down an opportunity to reunite for Riot Fest , with East Bay Ray writing on social media: “Dead Kennedys had a sincere invitation to play a reunion show at Riot Fest in Chicago this fall. Jello Biafra turned it down. Klaus Flouride, DH Peligro and I were looking forward to doing it.”

Returning to Australia for his first band shows since 1983, former Dead Kennedy’s frontman Jello Biafra has now added a handful of talking shows to his extended schedule

Entitled  What Would Jello Do? , the talking shows follow on from Biafra’s you tube series of the same name in commenting on contemporary political issues, democracy, government conspiracy and cover ups, election fraud – the type of banter Jello is notorious for telling and for which he’s an excellent orator.

In addition, Jello will also perform a DJ set in Hobart and will also perform in Sydney for Vivid Ideas joining the forward thinking Ruby Speudo and artist Karen Therese in discussion on a subject entitled Build A Movement .

Jello last appeared in talking mode in Australia in 2012. He appeared to packed houses both solo and in Q&A mode for the Melbourne Festival commenting on SLAM and Occupy on a panel that also included The Church’s Steve Kilbey and moderator Dave Graney.

Jello Biafra Shares Heartfelt Tribute to Dead Kennedys Bandmate D.H. Peligro

The music world learned of the death of longtime Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro over the weekend, and his longtime bandmate and often outspoken vocalist from the band, Jello Biafra , has now issued his statement on the musician's death.

The news was delivered on Saturday (Oct. 29), revealing that Peligro had passed away after suffering a trauma to his head during an accidental fall the day prior (Oct. 28).

Peligro joined the band in 1981 and remained through their initial run, while also returning for their later reunion. Biafra worked alongside Peligro for much of that time, and he issued a statement, sharing plenty of reflections on their time together, through the Alternative Tentacles website . It can be read below.

Wow. I sure wasn’t expecting this. I feel like I’ve been hit by a train. Despite all he’d done to his mind and body, I never thought we would lose him first. He was not just our powerful unforgettable drummer. He was a gifted singer, songwriter, guitarist and so much more. Even behind the drum kit, he had presence. All animal instinct, he never played anything quite the same way twice. He was a born showman. Clear back in ‘79, I got a hot tip on a new Clash-inspired Punk band called SSI playing at the Deaf Club. As great as those guys played, it was the drummer that stole the show. A free spirited African American force of nature (The Punk scene is always too white), with this shit eating grin, a bandana on his head, and two kick drums (!) singing his ass off to “Keep a Knockin," even sounding like Little Richard, as they closed the show. Then they disappeared. In 1981 we needed a new drummer. Somehow Ray found that guy from SSI. Or maybe Darren found him, I was never sure. From the first song, he was solid. Good kick and snare instinct, to make the songs go. At the second audition, he was the one who’d done his homework, so hands down he was in. Ray said he’d learned “In-Sight” from hearing it once in his car on the radio. Now we had more fire and feel than ever before, and the rest is history. He made the whole band 10 years younger, including all the damn carousing and pranks. Throwing food at passengers all over the plane on the way to Australia, til the pilot came back and threatened to arrest him. In Rome, he and I pulled on all these cables outside the window of a music label office, not realizing we were yanking all these peoples’ TVs off their balconies, and out of their living rooms. We laughed about a lot of stuff the other guys didn’t. We had our own unique bond. Friends who saw DH with the Chili Peppers at the Hollywood Bowl said he looked so happy up there. He looked so proud. But it was not to be. When he finally hit bottom, he went clear back to St. Louis to clean up. I was the one who flew out to see him when he got out of rehab. Another friend came down from Chicago, and blew our minds with our first 90 minute baptism of Wesley Willis! A year or two later, I was in Chicago working on Lard, and Wesley came over. I called DH, and put Wes on the phone, not telling Darren who he was. When talk shifted to the dangers of high fructose corn syrup, I knew he knew. When I got the phone back, he was laughing his ass off. When he came north to visit, he’d stay with me; and we grew closer and deeper than ever before. The other guys begged off, and didn’t want to see him. I thought we would truly be brothers for life. He put together his own band, called Peligro of course, with him on guitar and vocals, using a lot of the songs from his 80’s Punk power trio, the Hellations. Their Alternative Tentacles debut is by far the best solo album by any of the ex-DKs. Like “Fresh Fruit..” gone Bad Brains, in the best possible way. He had now spread his wings as a full fledged leader and songwriter. But more was not to be. I still think they could have become so much more when they regrouped, than a 20+ year tribute band. They could have gotten a new drummer, Jon Lieb, maybe; and made DH the new frontman, on vocals, second guitar, spice up his songs, and more. Aim high and do it right, with a new name, new sound, and a whole new identity. Like the class way Bauhaus morphed into Love and Rockets, post Peter Murphy. That could have been such a good band. Damn. I get goose bumps just thinking about it.. So I hope Peligro is up there somewhere, getting his headbutts from Wesley at last. Forever free from any hellrides from high fructose corn syrup. Also over the weekend, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea , who for a brief period worked with Peligro in the Chili Peppers, shared his own thoughts on the drummer's passing. Flea offered, "My dear friend, my brother I miss you so much. I’m devastated today, a river of tears, but all my life I will treasure every second. The first time I saw you play with the DK’s in ‘81 you blew my mind. The power, the soul, the recklessness. You became my beloved friend, so many times of every kind. We had so much fun, so much joy, having each other’s backs. I love you with all my heart. You are the truest rocker, and a crucial part of rhcp history. D H P in the place to be, you live forever in our hearts, you wild man, you bringer of joy, you giant hearted man. I will always honor you. Rest In Peace and freedom from all that restrained you."
