10 Signs You're A Gourmet Traveller

shutterstock_201584057

Every person has their own philosophy when it comes to travelling. For some, it doesn't get more fun than a package holiday in which everything is organised for you. For others, winging it seems like a much better idea. Some believe a weekend break is enough while some wouldn't dream of going away for less than two weeks. There's travellers that choose to backpack and then there are those who enjoy a caravan/RV road trip. Perhaps you love to hop between family and friends or maybe you chase your favourite football team on their travels? Whatever your travelling philosophy is, one thing's for sure – travelling is essential for experiencing life.

As St. Augustine said, " The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page".

Finding your style

To determine your preferred style of holiday you must first take a look at your travelling personality. You must try to identify yourself as a traveller, your overriding pastime, your modus operandi.

If you're adventurous, then picture yourself bungee jumping in New Zealand or running with the bulls in Pamplona. Are you comfortable and happy?

If you consider yourself a romantic, would you be content with gondola rides in Venice, sunsets in the Seychelles and sipping sparkling wine in Paris?

If you're intellectual, does broadening your internal encyclopedia with a trip to Europe tickle your fancy?

Love food? Then maybe your style is a gourmet traveller.

How to tell if you're a gourmet traveller

With the influx of great cooking shows on TV, many of us are finding we're spending more time in the kitchen then ever before. Does that mean that we're all becoming home cooks, or does it mean you're becoming a full-blown foodie?

A 'foodie' is a person who has an ardent or refined interest in food and wine. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than for convenience. In addition to the food itself, foodies are interested in the back story: the history, production, science and industry of food. More often than not, foodies have an intense fascination with taste, flavour, smells and textures.

That's why foodies tend to choose their travel locations based on the gourmet experience on offer.

If any of these sound familiar, gourmet travel is probably the thing for you.

1. You know the difference between chiffonade and julienne

Most people have the art of mincing, dicing and slicing down pat. But foodies take it a step further. Foodies know how to chiffonade bright green basil leaves to sprinkle over farm-fresh tomato slices glistening in olive oil. Foodies know how to julienne cream-coloured jicama to create a gourmet slaw.

2. You cancel your weekly squash night to stay at home and watch My Kitchen Rules

Since you were a teenager you've loved a fast-paced game of squash to free yourself momentarily from the weekly stresses of life. But suddenly game night clashes with your favourite cooking show. What to do? If you choose the cooking show – you're a foodie.

3. Your holiday pics look like a menu

Where some people's holiday slideshows will feature landscapes, local people, and historic buildings, yours will emphasise one thing: food. Most people can't wait to get stuck into their food once it hits the table, but you like to ponder it, whip out the camera and take a series of photos. You then have to share that photo with the world (courtesy of Instagram) to highlight what everyone else is missing.

4. Your palate is more adventurous than you are

You wouldn't dream of throwing yourself off a bridge attached to a rope, yet you're willing to pop that piece of chicken in your mouth that strangely resembles a teeny tiny hand. You'll complain about the tepid chardonnay you were served in the pub the other day, but then you'll happily try snake wine in South-east Asia. Your adventurous palette makes you willing to try new and exotic flavours, like spices or signature dishes from across the globe.

5. You prefer a weekend exploring wineries to visiting museums

Everyone has their favourite weekend pastimes: yours just happens to be of the edible variety. You judge a weekend well spent by the inflation of your belly at the end of it.

6. Your food choices cost more than you can afford

Your credit card statement reads like the Good Food Guide and if you had only had enough budget to buy either a new pair of shoes or a gourmet burger, the burger would always win. Foodies will typically look for food that's more expensive with the belief it will be delicious and locally sourced.

7. Your choose accommodation based on its proximity to the best restaurants

When booking your holiday, you tend to spend a disproportionate amount of time researching the food, rather than the sights or activities a place has to offer. And of course, the closer you are to the best places to eat, the more fun you're going to have.

8. You know about the seasons

You regularly check in with your farmers market suppliers to find out what's in season and adjust your shopping lists accordingly. You take this one step further by asking your favourite restaurants where they source their local, seasonal produce.

9. You order the tasting menu

If there is a tasting menu available, you order it, knowing that these menus are designed to showcase what's fresh and seasonal. You're also not afraid to order off the menu, knowing that many chefs are happy to whip you up something special just by being asked.

10. You read food blogs

You regularly find yourself reading food blogs to stay in touch with the latest food trends and recognise names such as Bobby Flay , Mario Batali and Anthony Bourdain .

How to travel like a gourmet traveller

If any of the above describes you, you may very well be a gourmet traveller. So what's next? Why not try:

  • Googling food bloggers based in your holiday destinations to find out their favourite places to eat
  • Checking out Instagram to find out the most photographed restaurants or food destinations
  • Visiting famous food markets
  • Visiting a farm to enjoy fresh produce at its best
  • Eating with a local. Today there are several sites which offer "pop-up" dinners or home cooked meals such as EatWith.com or BonAppetour.com .
  • Signing up for an organised food tour to get a taste of the best places to eat
  • Taking a cooking class
  • Choosing cheaper lodging to splurge on dining
  • Celebrating the unknown. Not sure what that yellow-looking foam is? Say yes to it anyhow.
  • Enjoying a weekend food break in Australia at favourites such as Ocean View Estate and Tokar Estate

The best restaurants in Adelaide (plus a few nearby)

Profile picture of The Gourmet Traveller Team

In Adelaide and its surrounding suburbs and towns, good food is never far away. Thanks to the South Australian region’s renowned wineries and excellent local produce, Adelaide restaurants combine exceptional food, fine wine and charm. From fine dining establishments on just a short drive from Adelaide to inner-city dining room gems that deliver every time, we’ve scoured the city and nearby towns for the best places to eat, drink and celebrate Adelaide’s thriving dining culture.

Here are the best restaurants in Adelaide right now.

BEST RESTAURANTS ADELAIDE

RESTAURANT BOTANIC

GT’s Restaurant Guide SA State Winner

At Restaurant Botanic, the line between the kitchen and the surrounding Adelaide Botanic Garden is all but invisible. Head chef Justin James works directly with the gardeners to grow rare ingredients such as blue quandong, oyster leaf and Mexican tarragon, with the intention of telling the story of Australia’s diverse flora and fauna. The result is 28 enthralling flavour combinations (and counting) marked by dazzling technique: a bite-sized apple “flower” sporting a pistil of green ants, say, or a “Coat of Arms tasting plate” comprising cured emu, seared kangaroo and a single warrigal-green leaf topped with drops of emu-liver pâté and kangaroo caramel. Large jars of garums, pickles and vinegars nod to seasons gone by, some of which appear in the “Temperance” drinks menu, which wows as much as the three tiers of wine pairings featuring local gems and rare pearls. As far as stories go, this is one told with rare thoughtfulness and synergy.

ARKHÉ

Of course there’s (very good) steak at a restaurant focused on cooking with fire, but the joys of Arkhé are the unconventional ways in which chef Jake Kellie embraces the flame. Take the signature parfait tartlet à la Burnt Ends, in which duck liver’s blended to a velvet softness and a scorched brittle top delivers an audible, sexy crunch. Two years after opening, Arkhé still provides a buzz, with the kitchen bench offering the best view of the team in motion. The energy is tangible. It sizzles in sticky, glazed kingfish collar and permeates a fermented pork-and-rice sausage with chilli jam fierce enough to blow cobwebs away. A wine list full of far-flung global beauties sits alongside a cocktail spread that includes a Penicillin, which gets flamed for extra theatrical fun. Even freshly baked madeleines with face-puckeringly tart passionfruit curd get the fiery treatment, rounding out a dining experience that’s always red-hot.

MAGILL ESTATE RESTAURANT

There are few things you can rely on in life, but the stellar snacks at Magill Estate Restaurant are a constant. The “Signature Menu” includes a single Kinkawooka mussel stuffed with Mayura Station wagyu tartare – a little treasure topped with lacto koji butter, pops of finger lime, chive oil and a mohawk of crisp saltbush. A spectacular deboned chicken wing stuffed with scallop and lobster also remains worthy of its staple status. As the pace shifts to mains, grilled Adelaide Hills porcini mushrooms are smoked in dried pine needles on the way to the table, presented with drama. The elegant space, located on the Penfolds winery grounds, has long set the tone for suburban fine dining, with vineyard and twinkling CBD views. Executive chef and director Scott Huggins has big plans for the future, too, including an outdoor countertop dining area that will breathe new life and energy into proceedings. Watch this space.

BEST RESTAURANTS NEAR ADELAIDE

PATCH KITCHEN & GARDEN

Andrew Davies, much loved for his work at Osteria Oggi and Press Food and Wine, recently took over a cottage-style building in Stirling – and, of course, diners have followed. In the front window, a wooden antique pasta maker sets the tone for the rustic, Euro-inspired flavours that follow. A handful of house-made pastas peaks in the form of tagliatelle bursting with blue swimmer crab and a garlicky chilli kick. But first, co-owner Belle Kha’s crunchy country pickles and a baked Parmigiano-Reggiano flan with a dollop of rich pork sausage ragù. The comfort factor continues with braised oxtail, root vegetables and creamy mash, as well as chocolate or raspberry soufflés that can always be relied on to stand proud. It’s all very uncomplicated and nurturing, like a hug from nonna. House-made gelato and sorbet flavours change daily, from pistachio to passionfruit, and are particularly enjoyable in the expansive courtyard, an oasis during warmer months.

THE LITTLE RICKSHAW

Talk about a success story. When Mike and Trinh Richards launched The Little Rickshaw in McLaren Vale back in 2017, they primarily served banh mì to local winemakers. Vignerons still arrive in droves, but the menu has metamorphosed. Like Trinh’s parents, the soul of “TLR” is Vietnamese, but the beautifully presented banquet menu roams more freely. An undercurrent of Japanese flavours is present all year round, in the likes of plump scallops topped with XO sauce made using fermented yuzu. Winter sees a shift towards Thai spices, which permeate the red curry seafood bisque packed with blue swimmer crab. The setting is a rustic rabbit warren of stone walls and a sun-soaked courtyard, an idyllic spot to sip Viet Espresso Martinis and great Champagne while rubbing elbows with local wine producers, who return regularly to experience their creations alongside the inspired dishes. No wonder it’s notoriously difficult to secure a booking.

24 Old Coach Rd, Aldinga, thelittlerickshaw.com.au

The flora-packed Newman’s Nursery grounds provide a fitting backdrop for Topiary, a breakfast and lunch spot with sustainability at heart. Here, in a 140-year-old building and wisteria-framed courtyard, chef and co-owner Kane Pollard and wingman Alex Payne take the “from scratch, zero-waste” route. Wild artichoke and bastard cabbage “light shades” hang from the ceiling. Foraged weeds, including purslane and chickweed, appear beside a micro-producer bounty sourced during weekly pilgrimages to the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market. Cheeses and butter are made in-house, and the cooking favours underutilised species and cuts – lamb neck in a Kei apple glaze, for instance. Carp makes its way into fancy fish fingers topped with finger-lime mayonnaise and warrigal greens, while char-grilled tommy ruff wrapped in a fig leaf offers an inspired take on another often-overlooked ocean dweller. Service exudes professionalism and warmth, while slick presentation on the plate pops with vibrancy and colour, mirroring the relaxed, verdant surrounds.

What to Look for in a Gourmet Gift Basket

Presentation.

If you really want to wow someone when you give them a gift, then it’s not just about the contents–it’s about the overall presentation. Whether it’s all wrapped up in a bow or neatly arranged in an appealing basket, presentation is the cherry on top of any gift. Many premade gift baskets are known for their beautiful presentations.

Digging through a gift basket and discovering the goodies inside is just as fun as enjoying the treats themselves. Variety really elevates a gift basket from good to great. Well-rounded gift baskets could include dried meats, cheeses, gourmet snacks, candies, nuts, and fruit mixes. Even if you select a specialty gift basket, you can look for variety. For example, if you’re sending someone a chocolate lover’s basket, you can look for different flavors or types of chocolates. There could be salted caramel chocolate bars, milk chocolate-covered popcorn, double fudge brownies, dark chocolate mints, etc.

Stale cookies are sad, especially when they're supposed to be a gift for someone—that’s why freshness is so important when it comes to perishable gift baskets. Typically, fresh baked goods are made only a day or two before being wrapped up and shipped in a gift basket. With next day or same-day shipping, your goods should still arrive fresh and tasty. Keep an eye out for shipping expectations when ordering.

How are gift baskets shipped?

Each retailer will have a different shipping process. That said, most gift baskets with perishable items are often shipped with ice packs or on refrigerated trucks within a few days of ordering.

Additionally, most baskets come in some form of, well, basket. Wicker or woven baskets are common, but other options include wooden boxes or plastic tubs. Items may be nestled among package filling (like crinkle paper) or individually wrapped to ensure freshness and cleanliness.

What are the most popular types of gift baskets?

There is an incredible variety of gift baskets available. Popular gift baskets include snacks and foods, wine and cheese, gourmet candies and chocolate, holiday-themed sets, spa care, or a mix of items.

How can I customize a gift basket?

Many retailers allow customizable options. Some may let you swap out a few items for something else, add on extras, include a personalized gift message, or even embroider names onto items. Check for customization options in your online order.

Walt Disney World vs. Disneyland 2024: What’s Better for Your Money?

P lanning a magical trip to a Disney park is always exciting, but choosing between the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida or visiting Disneyland in California can be tough. Both offer enchanting experiences, but where can your Disney Dollar go further? Doing a side-by-side comparison can help you when planning your next trip .

Disney World vs. Disneyland: Quick Take

Legendary tourist hotspots Disneyland and Disney World Resort Hotel are popular destinations in the United States that are already seeing their fair share of traffic, especially with families planning upcoming vacations based around school holidays such as spring break or summer vacation.

As millions of travelers map out their long-awaited summer trips to either of the happiest places on earth, they may be wondering where they can get the biggest bang for their Disney-fated buck. Aside from factors like travel fare–which depends on where you live–there’s a lot to consider when making this decision. Here are some key takeaways about Walt Disney World vs. Disneyland.

Disneyland Features

  • Average 1-day base ticket: $104 to $209
  • You don’t need to stay as long to experience everything: Because Disneyland is considerably smaller than Disney World (even if you attend its partner park, California Adventure), there’s less ground to cover, which could do your wallet some serious good. “Disneyland has historically been less expensive just because the length of stay is generally shorter,” said Kaleigh Kirkpatrick, founder of The Shameless Tourist . “My recommendation for length of stay at Disneyland is usually three nights versus five to seven at Disney World.”
  • You can walk instead of drive or Uber: “Almost everything is in walking distance, whereas at Walt Disney World transportation is a huge factor (both in terms of logistics and cost) for your vacation,” said Luke Dunsmore, editor of Theme Park Portal. “There’s plenty to see in the surrounding area as well (including nearby Knott’s Berry Farm), with state parks and beaches just a few miles away, helping families to spread the cost of their vacation whilst still having a fun time.”
  • You have a variety of dining — which means you could save more: “Disney World is the size of San Francisco, so just with the sheer size there have always been more options in terms of food,” Kirkpatrick said. “With Disneyland just reopening, there is less percentage of the restaurants that have reopened there than at Disney World, but both have plenty of options for guests and from my experience pricing is quite comparable.”

Walt Disney World Features

  • Average 1-Day, 1-Park Range: $109 to $189
  • More value at Disney World: “You get more for your money at Disney World,” said Amy Morrison, a travel advisor with Dehoney Travel . “Disney World is able to offer more parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) as well as two water parks. This means more rides along with more shows and parades.” Miller concurs, adding: “Disney World offers park hopper tickets where you can bounce around parks, and the hours, depending on the day and if you’re staying at one of the property resorts, are extended for additional park time.”
  • There are cheaper hotel options: “On average, rooms in Anaheim, California will cost the average traveler approximately $23.00 more per night compared to Orlando, or $135 vs. $112 a night,” said Alex Miller, founder and CEO of UpgradedPoints.com . However, both Anaheim and Orlando have a variety of average nightly hotel room costs that range from budget to luxury.
  • There is a larger variety of options: More options are open, allowing you to plan your day with nearly every eatery option being open. With more open, you’re able to select how you want to vacation — from cheaper ‘quick service’ establishments to more fine dining, or family-friendly establishments.

Walt Disney World vs Disneyland: Ticket Prices

Prices for both parks will vary depending on the duration of your trip, the time of year you book, or even the day of the week you visit. It’s good to be aware of this dynamic pricing, as it’s constantly changing and can affect how much you spend on your park visit. No matter how you slice it, at either location, you can expect to pay more than $100 per ticket for just the basic price of admission.

Walt Disney World vs. Disneyland: It’s a Matter of Preference

Many prefer Disney World as it offers such amenities as park hopper tickets which allow you to bounce around parks, and better hours, as those staying at the property resorts can benefit from extended hours for additional park time.

Ultimately though, this is a personal and family choice. Some allures of Disneyland may trump those of Disneyworld. For instance, although Phil Gramlich, owner of Ear To There Travel , an EarMarked Authorized Disney Travel Planning Agency and the host of the Disney-focused podcast Turkey Leg Talk (formerly the Ear To There Disney Podcast), thinks Disney World offers the bigger bang for your buck, he prefers Disneyland.

“Disneyland Park is honestly my favorite park in existence due to the fact that I’m a huge Walt Disney fan/expert and you can literally walk where he walked there and touch what he touched,” Gramlich said. “But please use hand sanitizer after all that touching.”

Walt Disney World vs. Disneyland: 6 Tips To Help You Decide

Whether you’re dreaming of meeting Mickey Mouse in Florida or strolling down Main Street, USA in California, you can easily make some magical memories at either of the happiest places on earth. Here are some factors to consider to help you decide which is the better fit for you and your family.

  • Size and capacity
  • Number of attractions
  • Dining options
  • Accommodation choices
  • Special events and entertainment
  • Ticket prices

1. Size and Capacity

  • Walt Disney World: Covering a whopping 25,000 acres, Walt Disney World is enormous. It’s like a mini-city with four main theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Plus, it has two water parks, countless hotels, and entertainment areas.
  • Disneyland: Disneyland Resort is much smaller, with only two theme parks: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. However, it’s still packed with Disney magic and charm, and everything is within walking distance.

2. Number of Attractions

  • Walt Disney World: With four theme parks, there’s something for everyone. From classic rides like Space Mountain to new adventures like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you won’t run out of things to do. Plus, there are plenty of parades, shows, and character meet-and-greets to keep you entertained.
  • Disneyland: While smaller, Disneyland doesn’t skimp on attractions. You can explore iconic rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Indiana Jones Adventure, as well as newer additions like Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! and Pixar Pier.

3. Dining Options

  • Walt Disney World: With over 475 dining options, including fine dining restaurants, character meals, and quick-service eateries, you’ll never go hungry at Walt Disney World. Plus, there’s a wide range of cuisines to satisfy every palate.
  • Disneyland: While it has fewer dining options compared to Disney World, Disneyland still offers plenty of tasty treats. From classic churros to gourmet dining at Carthay Circle Restaurant, you’ll find something delicious to munch on.

4. Accommodation Choices

  • Walt Disney World: From budget-friendly value resorts to luxurious deluxe villas, Walt Disney World has accommodations for every budget. You can even stay in themed hotels like Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort or Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.
  • Disneyland: While there are fewer on-site hotels at Disneyland, you can still choose from three Disney-owned properties: Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. There are also plenty of off-site options nearby.

5. Special Events and Entertainment

  • Walt Disney World: Throughout the year, Walt Disney World hosts special events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. There are also nightly fireworks shows, parades, and live entertainment.
  • Disneyland: Disneyland also offers seasonal events like Halloween Time and Holidays at the Disneyland Resort, along with nighttime spectaculars such as Fantasmic! and World of Color.

6. Ticket Prices

  • Walt Disney World: Ticket prices at Walt Disney World vary depending on the number of days and type of ticket you purchase. Generally, the longer you stay, the more you’ll save per day. Plus, there are often discounts available for multi-day tickets.
  • Disneyland: Like Disney World, ticket prices at Disneyland depend on factors like the number of days and type of ticket. While Disneyland’s tickets may be slightly cheaper overall, keep in mind that you’re getting access to fewer parks.

Final Take To GO: It’s Not Such a Small World After All

Both Walt Disney World and Disneyland offer magical experiences that will create memories to last a lifetime. If you’re looking for sheer size and variety, Walt Disney World may be the way to go. However, if you prefer a more compact and intimate experience, Disneyland could be the perfect choice. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what you value most in a Disney vacation.

  • Both parks have their pros and cons, however, Disney World is often considered to be better for the number of attractions it offers while Disneyland might fit your budget better as it tends to be cheaper overall.

Chain restaurants like Chili's are coming for fast-food giants in the latest bout of the value wars

  • As fast-food prices increase, customers are finding more value in chain restaurants.
  • Chains like Chili's are rolling out deals and portion sizes that could best fast-food chains.
  • Chili's new Big Smasher burger is the latest offensive move in the value wars.

Insider Today

At Chili's Dallas headquarters, I watched as a staffer dressed in Boyz II Men-themed Chili's merchandise glided through the company's spacious lobby while carrying an oversized margarita. It wasn't even 11 a.m.

This, apparently, was the place where everyone lived, ate, and breathed Chili's , and it was the first sign I was in for a memorable experience inside where its menu items are born.

The second sign was a half-pound burger smashed down, topped with lettuce, crunchy pickles, and a creamy Thousand Island dressing.

The Big Smasher burger, Chili's newest menu item, was served in the company's test kitchen before its official launch on April 29. At the company's invitation, I had traveled 1,500 miles from New York to try this burger and other new menu items in development. With the first bite, I knew it was worth the turbulent four-hour flight.

As the cheese-covered meat, tangy sauce, and freshly buttered bun hit my taste buds, I thought: This was a burger good enough to take on the Big Mac — but would it best it in a head-to-head competition?

It feels like Chili's is open to answering that question as fast-food restaurant prices rise. And if the sheer size and taste of the Chili's burger are anything to go by, it has a shot at beating fast-food chains in the value wars.

Competitive pricing and generous portions at restaurants could spell trouble for fast-food chains

Fast food has long been considered the cheapest way to dine out, but that may no longer be the case.

In New York City, a McDonald's Big Mac meal, including a medium-size order of fries and a medium drink, costs $13.89, excluding tax. (McDonald's told BI that local franchisees set pricing, which varies by restaurant.) Similarly, a Burger King Whopper meal combo costs $13.99, excluding tax.

Chain restaurants are using promotional deals to get people through the doors, such as Chili's "3 For Me" combo that allows customers to order an entrée like a burger, a side of fries, an appetizer , and a bottomless drink for $10.99. Customers also have the option to upgrade their drink and appetizer for an additional $3.99 each.

The chain argues that, based on size, Chili's burgers are a better value than those at a fast-food restaurant. All Chili's burgers weigh a half-pound versus the 3.2-ounce pre-cooked patty weight of a Big Mac.

It's not just Chili's offering discounted combo meals.

Applebee's "2 for $25" meal deal includes two entrées and the choice of an appetizer or two side salads, while Red Lobster's "Shrimp Your Way" gives customers the choice of three shrimp dishes for $25 or two for $21.

Unsurprisingly, the meal deals are popular. In January, Restaurant Business News reported the percentage of Chili's orders that included a promotional deal like the "3 For Me" or margarita of the month rose to 31%, up two points from the previous quarter.

After Applebee's added steak to its "2 for $25" deal in June, John Peyton, CEO of the chain's operator Dine Brands, said the percentage of Applebee's customers ordering limited-time-only or value offerings grew from 15% to 19% quarter over quarter, Nation's Restaurant News reported.

Outback Steakhouse also recently brought back its limited-time-only Steak & Lobster deal, which starts at $19.99. It includes a 6-ounce sirloin steak, lobster tail, and two sides. The chain announced the rerelease of the deal in a simple Instagram post: "Back by popular demand."

Fast-food chains are hiking prices and making customers mad

Fast-food establishments typically raise prices by about 2% each year. Still, McDonald's chief financial officer Ian Borden told analysts at the UBS Global Consumer and Retail Conference in March that the chain raised US prices by around 10% in 2022 and 2023, blaming inflation.

Despite the price increase , last year's sales remained steady. McDonald's reported that comparable year-over-year sales increased 8.7% in 2023.

However, 2024 has brought even more price hikes for customers. The recent implementation of California's $20 minimum wage for employees in limited-service restaurants has led to across-the-board increases in menu prices throughout the state.

Still, squeezed franchise owners know there's a limit to what customers are willing to spend.

Related stories

"We have looked at price, although I can't charge $20 for a Happy Meal," Scott Rodrick, a McDonald's franchise owner who operates 18 restaurants in California, told CNN . "My customers' appetite to absorb menu-board prices is not unlimited."

In a February earnings report, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said the chain had declining visits, and customers earning $45,000 a year or less were spending less.

"We certainly know consumers are more wary — and weary — of pricing and we're going to continue to be consumer-led in our pricing decisions as we look forward to 2024," Borden said on a February earnings call, CBS News reported.

Customers have also taken to social media to bemoan the increases.

"Outback can do Steak and Lobster for $19.99, but McDonald's can't keep their prices in check. The death of fast food is upon us," one Reddit user commented.

A McDonald's spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement that the chain "always strives to strike the right balance of value for money" when asked to comment on competing with casual-dining chains to attract value-driven customers.

Chain restaurants are coming out swinging with new products similar to fast-food favorites

Chili's Big Smasher burger is the latest example of how chain restaurants are following fast-food chains' playbooks by delivering what customers love while offering better value amid price increases.

The burger costs $12.99 but comes down to $10.99 when part of the chain's "3 For Me" meal combo.

"We've always had incredible burgers on our menu, but for about a year now, we've been hearing more and more frustration from fast-food fans over rising costs," Chili's director of culinary, Brian Paquette, told Business Insider, adding that it's one of the reasons the chain wanted to deliver "some of the favorite drive-thru flavors" on its menu.

When Paquette described the Big Smasher during my visit to Chili's headquarters, I noticed its similarities with McDonald's Big Mac, which I've eaten many times. Both burgers include shredded lettuce, onions, pickles, American cheese, and a Thousand-Island-style dressing.

It's a comparison Chili's is leaning into.

In a press release, Chili's said the new burger has "flavors fast food lovers will recognize." And a new ad released by the chain takes direct aim at McDonald's most famous burger, saying their iteration is better than "a tiny drive-thru burger" while showing their "3 For Me" combo next to a lone Big Mac.

Chili's half-pound burger — "twice the meat of a Big Mac," Paquette said — is made using a hand smasher, and the patty is seasoned with a spice blend on both sides.

The result, which is both juicy and crispy, was far better than any fast-food burger I've had recently, thanks to its size and the quality of the toppings. It tasted like a gourmet restaurant burger, as opposed to a fast-food joint burger speedily thrown together.

Leaning into meal deals can win over customers, but chains can risk cutting their prices too much

Promotional deals, while popular among customers, can threaten chains' profits if they're not sustainable.

Earlier in April, Bloomberg reported seafood chain Red Lobster is considering filing for bankruptcy after a blundered roll-out of its signature all-you-can-eat deal.

Red Lobster's " Ultimate Endless Shrimp " deal, which has run for over 18 years, offered unlimited shrimp dishes for $20. Initially a one-day-a-week deal, it became a daily promotion last summer to attract more customers. In 2023, Red Lobster raised the price twice, eventually landing at $25 to cope with demand and improve profits.

Despite the increased price, the all-you-can-eat strategy backfired. Operating losses of $11 million and $12.5 million were reported in the quarters following the daily endless shrimp promotion launch in 2023. By 2024, the deal is only available on Mondays.

Chili's executives are aware of the dangers of using discounted meal deals to attract customers. Felix said there was a focus on discounting to drive people into restaurants in years past, but Chili's recently made strategic shifts to pull back on discounts and avoid training the chain's customers to rely on them.

"You're seeing a lot of kind of desperate value plays out there that might work in the short term, but you're paying for the traffic and the gains you're seeing versus doing it in a sustainable way," he continued.

Felix told BI that while the "3 For Me" promotion wasn't designed to compete with fast food, he agreed it could do just that.

"Fast food and drive-thru prices have gone up," he said. "I think that's just the start of the conversation, and the sticker shock is real."
