What is 'Banana Ball'?

‘Banana ball’ is baseball but with  nine rule changes , all aimed at speeding up play. The game is scored unconventionally, with teams tallying points for innings won rather than runs scored. There is also a two-hour time limit - no inning can start after the 1 hour, 50 minute mark.

Other “banana ball” rules include prohibiting mound visits, bunting and stepping out of the batter’s box between pitches. A fan favorite involves ruling a batter out if a ball he fouls off into the stands is caught by a spectator.

Aside from the rules, “banana ball” features a litany of  hijinks , from dancing base coaches and umpires to pitchers on stilts to hitters wielding flaming bats.

Team owner Jesse Cole introduced “banana ball” in 2018 with secret test games against college teams Lander and Wofford in Greenwood, South Carolina, a three-hour drive from Savannah. The debut game finished in 99 minutes.

The first public trial came the next year in Savannah. Cole took the game on the road for the first time in 2021, playing a series in Mobile, Alabama. In 2022, the Bananas played “banana ball” games in nine cities, including Savannah. Then in 2023, the Bananas moved to full-time "banana ball," dropping the collegiate summer league team.

The 2024 MLB World Tour was announced by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association Wednesday.

London, Mexico City, Seoul, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic during Spring Training will each host two-game series’ in 2024. London and Mexico City will return as host cities for the second consecutive season.

The stadiums where games will be played are Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the home of the Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido franchises of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana; Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu in Mexico City, the home of the Diablos Rojos del Mexico of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol; and London Stadium, the home of the West Ham United Premier League soccer club. A venue in Seoul has yet to be announced.

Seoul has two stadiums that serve as home to three teams in the Korea Baseball Organization. Jamsil Stadium, which is home to the Doosan Bears and LG Twins, is outdoors, though Major League Baseball could also play in the Gocheok Sky Dome, which hosted a pool round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

This Seoul Series will be the first time Major League Baseball has hosted a regular season game in South Korea. The Seoul Series will be the ninth time that Major League Baseball has started the regular season outside of the United States and Canada.

The last time the Dominican Republic hosted a Spring Training game was on March 7, 2020, when the Detroit Tigers took on the Minnesota Twins at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal shortly before the COVID-19 Pandemic shut down baseball.

The Dodgers and the Padres are playing each other outside of the United States for the second time. The first time was a three-game series at Estadio Beisbol de Monterrey from May 4-6 of the 2018 regular season.

The Padres played against the Mets during the 1996 season in MLB’s first international regular season series.

The Padres will play in their fifth international regular season series, the most of any Major League team, when they take the field on opening day 2024 in Seoul.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association agreed to schedule up to 24 regular season games and 16 Spring Training contests spreading throughout Latin America, Asia, and Europe over the course of the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement, which expires after the 2026 regular season.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association also formed the World Tour program during negotiations for the Collective Bargaining Agreement during the offseason and work stoppage of March 2022.

Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, will also host a neutral site game between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants on June 24, 2024.

MLB also plans to have a regular season series in Paris during 2025.

MLB World Tour to reach Korea, Mexico, England and Dominican Republic in 2024

Major League Baseball (MLB) and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) announced that the MLB World Tour will reach four countries outside the United States or Canada during the 2024 season.

The 2024 MLB regular season will begin with Korea's first-ever regular season games as the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres meet for two games in Seoul on 20 and 21 March.

The series will mark the ninth international opener outside the United States and Canada in Major League history, following the 1999 Opening Game in Monterrey, Mexico (Rockies v Padres); the 2000 Opening Game in Tokyo, Japan between the Mets and Chicago Cubs; the 2001 Opening Game in San Juan, Puerto Rico between the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays; the 2004 Opening Series in Tokyo between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and New York Yankees; the 2008 Opening Series in Tokyo between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics; the 2012 Opening Series in Tokyo between the Athletics and the Seattle Mariners; the 2014 Opening Series in Sydney, Australia between the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks; and the 2019 Opening Series in Tokyo between the Athletics and Mariners.

Regular season games will return to Mexico City for a second consecutive season with a two-game set between the Houston Astros and the Colorado Rockies on 27 and 28 April.

The two events join the previously announced two-game series between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies at London Stadium on June 8-9, 2024.

In addition to the three international regular season series, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays will meet for two Spring Training contests at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on 9 and 10 March.

The MLB World Tour is a historic slate of games that will bring MLB teams and players to the league’s global fan base. The Tour represents MLB and the MLBPA’s largest-ever international play plan featuring up to 24 regular season games and up to 16 exhibition games played in Asia, Mexico and Latin America, and Europe between the 2023-2026 seasons.

Why Is the MLB Playing in South Korea Ahead of Opening Day? All About the MLB World Tour

Major League Baseball kicked off its regular season with the Seoul Series, a two-game set played by the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres on March 20

Baseball season is in full swing (well, sort of).

Major League Baseball kicked off its regular season in South Korea with a game played by the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres on March 20 ahead of the MLB's official Opening Day on March 28.

The two-day set played in Korea is part of the MLB's Seoul Series, marking one of the four international stops the league is making over the course of the season. Known as the MLB World Tour, the schedule also includes stops in Mexico City, London and the Dominican Republic.

Despite the two games being played overseas ahead of the official Opening Day in the United States, they do count towards both the Dodgers and Padres regular season record. However, upon the team's return, they each have two spring training games prior to Opening Day that don't count.

The MLB's regular season start in South Korea has unsurprisingly been a hot topic due to the schedule alone, but players have also topped headlines — with Shohei Ohtani specifically tied to a major controversy.

The former Los Angeles Angels superstar — who made his Dodgers debut in Korea after signing a  $700 million, 10-year contract with the team — is reportedly the victim of "massive theft" from his interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, who allegedly used his money for illegal gambling. Mizuhara was fired on March 20.

"The Dodgers are aware of media reports and are gathering information. The team can confirm that interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been terminated. The team has no further comment at this time," a representative for the Dodgers said, per  MLB.com .

The MLB kicked off its regular season with the Seoul Series in South Korea on March 20, which saw the Dodgers win 5-2 over the Padres. The two-day set, played at the Gocheok SkyDome, wraps on March 21.

The Seoul Series marks the ninth time that the MLB season has opened outside the United States and Canada, and the first international host venue since Tokyo in 2019. The Seoul Series also marks the first MLB game played in South Korea.

The last international game played by the Dodgers was against the Padres in Mexico in 2018. The Seoul Series will also be the Los Angeles team's second Opening Day overseas after the 2014 season opener in Australia.

The Padres played internationally in 2023 during the Mexico City Series, so the Seoul Series marks their second straight season playing abroad. Like the Dodgers, the San Diego team played an Opening Day abroad — but in the inaugural international season opener in 1999.

The MLB World Tour was created in an increased effort to bring the joy of baseball to fans across the globe. The first international Opening Game was held in 1999, played between the Colorado Rockies and the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico.

"Major League Baseball is incredibly excited for this extensive slate of international games in 2024," Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement . "Our recent efforts have produced strong enthusiasm around the globe, and we look forward to building on that foundation... We are thrilled that our fans across four different countries outside the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to see the game’s stars."

The four stops on the 2024 MLB World Tour include Seoul, Mexico City, London and the Dominican Republic. The first three cities will host an international regular season series, while the D.R. hosted a pair of spring training games on March 9 and March 10 in Santo Domingo.

“Players have a deep interest in growing baseball around the world. No matter where they come from, players are linked by a passion for our game that transcends different languages, cultures, and nationalities,” said Tony Clark , the executive director of the MLB Players Association. "We are excited to expand our international presence in new communities and celebrate the game we all love.”

MLB Opening Day officially kicks off on Thursday, March 28, with games played by all 30 teams across the United States. Up first is the New York Mets against the Milwaukee Brewers who face off at 1:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field, New York.

Most of the games will be played in the afternoon, including Phillies-Braves, Dodgers-Cardinals and Astros-Yankees. The Texas Rangers will celebrate their 2023 World Series title before hosting the Chicago Cubs at 7:35 p.m. ET at Globe Life Field.

The Inside Story of Baseball’s Grand World Tour of 1914

As the 2014 season opens in Australia, they are really only following in the footsteps of the Giants and the White Sox from 100 years ago

Baseball world tour

The 2014 baseball season opens this weekend when the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks play two regular-season games in Sydney, Australia, more than a week before the rest of the teams officially hit the field. Certainly Major League Baseball hopes to illustrate the global popularity of American baseball – but it’s been done bigger and better before. A century ago, an international tour yet to be equaled featured the New York Giants, Chicago White Sox, and Jim Thorpe, the man considered the greatest athlete on the planet who was simply glad to have a job.

The instigators of the around-the-world series of games were John “Mugsy” McGraw of the Giants, the most successful manager in baseball, and Charles Comiskey, owner of the White Sox. One night in December 1913, McGraw and Comiskey were having drinks at “Smiley” Mike Corbett’s bar on Chicago’s East Side, and the idea of a world tour came up. McGraw knew something about the business – he was in the midst of a 16-week tour of vaudeville theaters, where all he had to do was tell baseball yarns for a whopping $3,000 a week. Comiskey was already rich and McGraw was getting there, so making money was not the main motive for a journey around the globe. Both men were envious of the fame that Albert Spalding, seeking to spread the reach of his sporting goods company, had achieved when he had led players on an 1889-90 tour of several countries including New Zealand, Australia, Egypt and Italy. McGraw and Comiskey wanted to lead a bigger and better tour with teams representing the two biggest cities in the United States. The 25th anniversary of Spalding’s adventure was approaching, so the time was right for a new edition.

The tour that McGraw and Comiskey envisioned would begin as a barnstorming trek across the country right after the 1913 World Series. Upon reaching the West Coast, the two teams and whoever else was allowed to tag along (especially reporters) would board a ship to take them across the Pacific. The tour’s first stop on foreign soil would be in Tokyo and, going from east to west, the last one would be in London. In between the travelers would touch down in China, the Philippines, Egypt, Ceylon, France, and other countries with at least a rudimentary ballfield.

McGraw and Comiskey filled out most of the roster of current Giants and White Sox played, but they cast a wider net for a few famous and more colorful players. On board were future Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson, Tris Speaker, Urban Farber and “Wahoo” Sam Crawford. Among those joining them were James “Death Valley Jim” Scott, George “Hooks” Wiltse, “Bunny” Hearn, “Turkey” Mike Donlin, and others who nicknames matched their personalities.

The most famous of them all was Jim Thorpe. Regarded as the greatest athlete at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, by 1913 he was also the world’s most notorious one . That January, the Worcester Telegram reported that a few years earlier Thorpe had earned $2 a game playing professional baseball in the Eastern Carolina League. The ensuing headlines prompted the Amateur Athletic Union to begin disciplinary proceedings that would result in Thorpe being stripped of his medals. Newly married and needing to make a living, Thorpe jumped at the New York Giants’ offer of a three-year deal that would pay him a $6000 annually, when most players in 1913 took home $2000 or less.

At the end of the season, the Giants, boasting a 101-51 record and dominating the National League, faced the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1913 World Series. McGraw had visions in his head of rounding the world as the world champion manager, but the Athletics took the championship in five games. The last loss, 3-1, was especially galling for McGraw because of what the New York Times reported as “witless blunders” by his team and being shut down by Old Man Plank, at 40 years old, the oldest pitcher in baseball.

The Giants, however, were still the marquee name in baseball. (The White Sox, at 78-74, had finished fifth in the American League.) The much-anticipated tour finally got underway on October 18 with an 11-2 Giants victory in Cincinnati, just one week after the end of the World Series.

What piece of the profits would the players get? None. According to James E. Elfers, author of the definitive account The Tour to End All Tours , the players had to actually pay to participate. Elfers writes:

"They had to put up a few hundred dollars to reserve their spot on the tour. Once they boarded the Empress of Japan the players got their reserve back plus a matching amount for the tour -- they had to put up $250 and got back $500. The money the tour made around the world -- and it was considerable -- was divided three ways after expenses were met. Comiskey, McGraw, and [Comiskey crony and promoter Jimmy “Nixie”] Callahan got all the profits. I'm sure the players thought that the trip itself was perk and profit enough, but the loser’s share of the annual Chicago city series, which involved some of the tour players, was larger than the money they got for risking life and limb around the world."

After Cincinnati, the teams rode the rails through the heartland of America, with stops for games in places like Peoria, Springfield, Tulsa, Sioux City and El Paso, then on to the West Coast, where they worked their way up from San Diego to Seattle. Given that at the time the farthest-west major league franchise was the St. Louis Cardinals (which had lost 99 games in the 1913 season), the crowds on the coast were especially welcoming. The Los Angeles Times reported about the November 8 game, “A vast number of persons were found lined up fighting desperately to separate themselves from their money. The game was held until all of them succeeded in doing this that none might be disappointed.”

On December 9, the Giants boarded the Empress of Japan and set sail to visit 13 nations and travel over 30,000 miles, mostly by water and rail, decades before deep-pocketed owners sprang for private planes. The notoriously thrifty Comiskey provided most of the $90,000 for chartered steamships and brought with him a $121,000 letter of credit for additional travel expenses. (Comiskey was also a notoriously savvy businessman, and he would enjoy an excellent return on his investment.) For their part, the players, many of who had never been out of the U.S. before, knew this was their only opportunity to see the world, and why not do it on Comiskey’s dime while missing the New York and Chicago winter.

Ceylon Baseball World Tour

The western Pacific and subcontinent countries fascinated the players – once they got there. On the way to Japan they encountered a late-season typhoon which tossed 60-foot waves at the ship, and they were especially glad to reach Tokyo, where 5,000 Japanese fans attended the first game, 7,000 the second, both held in tiny stadiums. “Space was at such a premium that many of the fans sat on bamboo mats crammed into any open plot of land,” Elfers writes. “To the Americans, it was all very heady and overpowering.” Then for the teams it was on to China.

Thorpe proved especially appealing at the gate. To the foreign fans he was still the world’s greatest athlete, and he was touted as such in advertisements and newspaper reports anticipating the arrival of the teams. And few were aware that in the 1913 season, he had appeared in only 19 games for the Giants and batted an anemic .143. The more romantic fans were thrilled that this was a honeymoon trip too, as Ina Thorpe was accompanying her husband on the tour. As the teams’ steamship approached the dock in Shanghai, the waiting throng chanted, “Thorpe! Thorpe! Thorpe!” The great baseball players with him were viewed as merely members of the king’s court.

After a stop in Hong Kong – where doctors had to certify that none of the visitors had smallpox -- the travelers arrived in Manila. In a ghostwritten account published in the New York Times , John McGraw reported:

In my baseball days I have been through many exciting incidents that have given me real thrills, but I never before had such a thrill as crept up and down my spine when the party of the world’s tourists arrived here yesterday.

They were greeted by wildly cheering people. Many of the Filipinos had never seen a baseball game before and perhaps didn’t know why they were cheering, but there were also many American military personnel on hand and later at the ballpark.

The new year found the teams in Brisbane, Australia. A disoriented Sam Crawford, accustomed to cold weather in January, commented, “It’s a beautiful town, if only it would snow once in a while.” One game was played there, then travel troubles jinxed them: After two games in Sydney, on January 9, where the Morning Herald reported, “If the appreciation and warmth of the greeting to the visitors by the expectant crowd of over 10,000 persons at the Sydney Cricket Ground counts for anything, the visitors need have no fears of success of their colorful adventure.”   Even McGraw had been moved to shout to the crowd, “I love Australians!”

From Sydney, the teams boarded a train in Melbourne to Adelaide, but delays turned the trip into an 18-hour slog. The game there had to be cancelled so the teams could hop on the HMS Orontes for India, prompting the Adelaide Advertiser to headline an article, “Discourteous Visitors; Local Baseballers Snubbed.”

A long journey by ship, which included crossing the equator on January 20, brought the teams to Ceylon, where tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton greeted them, and the game was played at the Victoria Gardens Racetrack before a bemused audience that wondered why they weren’t watching a cricket match. On January 23, the troupe headed for the Middle East.

Two games in Cairo opened February. For the players, more exciting than the games themselves was visiting the Pyramids and especially the Great Sphinx. With the latter, what made the visit special was watching Ivy Wingo, the Giants catcher, from 100 yards away throw a baseball over the Sphinx to where it was caught on the other side by Sox outfielder Steve Evans. Then the tourists boarded the German liner Prinz Heinrich , bound for Naples. After three days in Rome, where the travelers met Pope Pius X, they went to Nice then on to Paris. Rain washed out the games there, but undaunted, McGraw, Comiskey, and the players went sight-seeing.

baseball world tour Rome

England was the last stop, where in front of 20,000 spectators who included King George V, the Sox defeated the Giants 5-4 in 11 innings. When McGraw and Comiskey were presented to the king, who wore a black derby and dark suit and had never attended a sporting event at Chelsea Stadium before, they gave him three cheers and then accepted a ball from him to get the game started. After the game, King George had a message sent: “Tell Mr. McGraw and Mr. Comiskey that I have enjoyed the game enormously.”

Finally, on February 28, it was time for the weary travelers to head home. They would do so in style – they boarded the Lusitania, the luxury liner that would be sunk by German torpedoes the following year killing 1198 passengers. A banquet welcoming the journeymen home was held in New York on March 7, and Comiskey hosted a second one three days later in Chicago.

Did the players finally get to go home? No, because spring training had already begun. No doubt hung over from the successful yet exhausting tour, the New York Giants finished the 1914 season 10.5 games out of first place. The White Sox fared worse, at 70-84 tying the newly-named New York Yankees for sixth place, 30 games behind the Athletics. Still, as McGraw had “written” after that last game in London, “The game was a fitting close for the great tour, which has been successful in every feature. The most notable thing to me about the whole trip was the expression of national good feeling at all points we visited.”

  • Our Stories

More than 125 years ago, in late October 1888, two baseball clubs and an entourage of business managers, sportswriters, wives, and other enthusiasts of our National Pastime embarked on an extended offseason ball-playing tour. The brains and money behind the expedition was none other than Albert Spalding, a former big league pitcher (and future Hall of Famer) who parlayed his successful playing career into even greater success as a sporting goods mogul and baseball executive.

The effects from the goodwill from the tour continued to be felt around the globe more than a century later.

As initially conceived, the American tourists were to leave Chicago, barnstorm through the western United States, sail across the Pacific to Hawaii (then known as the Sandwich Islands), continue on to Australia where they would stay for a few months, and then return to the United States, all the while playing baseball. Indeed, the words “Spalding’s Australian Base Ball Tour” appear atop the exhibition’s official full-color poster, the only known copy residing in the collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. However, just a month into the journey, Spalding, ever the showman, abandoned his original plan in favor of one that would grab more headlines and provide greater exposure to himself and his sporting goods company: A trip around the world.

Well over a century later, in 1997, the Museum received an astonishing donation: A diary that detailed each day of the journey, penned by 19th-century ballplayer and Spalding World Tourist Jimmy Ryan. Written boldly atop the first page are the words “Tour of the Spalding B.B.C. Around the World.” Ryan’s first entry, dated Saturday, October 20, 1888, reads as follows:

In order to further promote the interests of Base Ball, a few gentlemen from Chicago, undertook to establish the National Game of America upon foreign soil. Accordingly on the 20th of October 1888, they, in company with a number of ball players, reporters and tourists, left Union depot on an expedition, known as the Spalding Australian Base Ball Tour. A crowd of people collected to see our departure and also to view the newly decorated and handsome sleeping car Galesburg and dining car, Cosmopolitan, which were consigned to the party until our arrival in Denver, Colorado. The signal for starting was now heard, and with many farewells and good wishes, the train drew out of the Union station, amid the prolonged cheers of the multitude. The myriads of lights were fast receding in the distance but on we plunged into the dark hours of the night, taking our first step toward that far away goal. Everybody is in the best of health and spirits and sounds of revelry were heard, into the “wee” small hours of the morning.

The diary, with its amazing firsthand account of the tour, is just one of dozens of artifacts related to this extraordinary voyage, each preserved in the Hall of Fame’s unparalleled collection. For example, as mentioned by Ryan, the ballplayers spent much of their journey from Chicago to Denver in special railroad cars on the Burlington Route. The Hall of Fame has a small, specially-made booklet that served as a menu for meals aboard the Cosmopolitan dining car. Among the choices for the pampered diners were oysters, boiled salmon in a Hollandaise sauce, prairie chicken, and English plum pudding with brandy sauce.

The ballplayers on the journey formed two teams: The National League Chicago White Stockings (today known as the Cubs) and a team comprised of other professional stars (and lesser players) dubbed the All-Americas. Playing their way westward, the teams faced one another in exhibitions in Minnesota (Minneapolis and St. Paul), Iowa (Cedar Rapids and Des Moines), Nebraska (Omaha and Hastings), Colorado (Denver and Colorado Springs), and Salt Lake City in the Utah Territory. (It would be another eight years before Utah earned statehood.)

After a month’s journey, the tourists arrived in Cairo, and on Feb. 9, 1889, mounted camels and donkeys for a pilgrimage to the Sphinx and the pyramids. There, the Chicago and All-America teams played what was assuredly the first game of baseball on the sands of the Giza Plateau. A baseball from that historic contest, kept by tour umpire and future Hall of Famer George Wright, was donated to the Hall of Fame in 1942. Additionally, a photograph of the American party, posing in front and upon the Sphinx, is a part of the Hall of Fame’s extensive photographic collection.

By mid-February, Spalding’s party had reached Rome, where a large crowd, including the Queen of Italy, witnessed their game played at the famed Villa Borghese. After travelling west along the Mediterranean coast, making stops in Pisa, Genoa, Monte Carlo, Nice, and Marseille, the baseball tourists headed inland to Paris, where they spent a week enjoying the capital of France.

After significant effort, Spalding finally managed to stage a game of baseball in the “City of Light” at Parc Aérostatique, just across the Seine from the still incomplete Eiffel Tower. The next day, March 9, the baseball entourage boarded the steamship Normandy for the voyage across the English Channel. Ryan described the harrowing journey in his diary:

The night was pitch dark and a severe storm was brewing; inside the harbor the sea was very rough and the ship tugged away at her anchor chains, as if eager to get under weigh. We soon started, however, and in a short space of time our miseries began. The ship plunged and pitched, tossed and shivered, while the wind whistled through the rigging, threatening to carry the ropes and spars with it. The storm now burst upon us with all its fury and the little vessel laboured heavily under the tons upon tons of water which she was continually shipping. The scene below deck was undiscribable [sic] and as all the hatches were batten down tight, the smell was horrible. Men, women and children were huddled together in the first cabin, some singing, some joking, but the greater majority, praying. Then, aside from these, was another party, who were so awfully seasick that they couldn’t do either, if they wanted to. Of course, I was one of the class ….

Once they reached land, the world tourists embarked upon an ambitious schedule of sightseeing and ball playing. The Chicago and All-America teams played nearly every day for over two weeks, facing one another in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Sheffield, Bradford, Manchester and Liverpool. Visits to Scotland (Glasgow) and Ireland (Belfast and Dublin) were also made, along with an obligatory stop to kiss the famed stone at the Blarney Castle. The ball players met distinguished politicians, famed actors, renowned athletes, and numerous other celebrities. The future King Edward VII witnessed one contest and noted his opinion in royal third person: “The Prince of Wales has witnessed the game of Base Ball with great interest and though he considers it an excellent game, he considers Cricket as superior.” All the while, members of the baseball party collected valued keepsakes, ornate menus and special programs, many of which now reside in Cooperstown.

On March 28, the Spalding entourage boarded the steamship Adriatic of the White Star Line for their final ocean voyage back to the States. After nine days, the ship reached New York harbor amid a hero’s welcome. The clubs spent the final two weeks of the adventure attending celebratory banquets, being honored by local dignitaries and, of course, playing ball. The globetrotting ball players took to the field in Brooklyn, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Indianapolis, and Chicago.

The tourists’ final celebratory banquet took place at Chicago’s famed Palmer House. The Hall’s collection features one of the beautiful silk-covered menu cards that were presented to each dinner guest that evening, April 19, 1889. The following day, exactly half a year after the tour began, the ballplayers ended their adventure in appropriate fashion, with a baseball game at Chicago’s West Side Grounds. With the All-America’s trouncing Chicago, 22-9, the final results of this “World Series” were complete: All-America 29 wins, Chicago 23 wins, and four ties.

Jimmy Ryan concluded his diary with one final entry, dated Saturday, April 20:

To day we have completed the circumference of the globe, for six months ago to day we bid good bye to Chicago and entered upon our tour Around the World. We have given exhibitions of our National Game in every continent on the face of the globe and also thirteen foreign countries and travelled upward of a distance of thirty thousand miles. This afternoon as tourists we played our last game and a great crowd greeted us as we appeared upon our native diamond. The game concluded and so also did the greatest trip in the annals of sport, namely a Baseball Tour “Around the World.” Finis.

2024 NCAA baseball tournament bracket: Scores, schedule, College World Series dates with Super Regionals set

Sixteen teams remain in the ncaa tournament, and the eight-team college world series starts june 14.

ncaa-trophy.png

The 2024 NCAA baseball tournament is underway, and after Monday's games, the 64-team field has now been trimmed to 16. The field for the Super Regionals is set, and it does not include the reigning champs. LSU was knocked out of the tournament by North Carolina on Monday night. Florida was also a winner on Monday to oust Oklahoma State and move on.

Top seeds like Tennessee, Georgia, NC State, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Virginia have advanced as well, and Super Regional action starts Friday. There's also one big Cinderella in this year's field. Evansville won the Greenville regional, with East Carolina and Wake Forest getting knocked out in the process. Evansville will face top-seeded Tennessee in the next round.

The World’s Tour of Baseball

The World’s Tour of 1913-14 of the Chicago White Sox, and New York Giants, under the auspices of Charles A. Comiskey, President White Sox, and John McGraw, Manager of the New York Giants, will go down in baseball history, as the greatest achievement of the National game of America, for the reason that it was planned, executed and jointly financed by the game’s two greatest leaders and sportsmen. These gentlemen did not ask the aid of any advertising firm to help them to finance their circuit of the globe, but they risked and invested the money they made out of their country’s game in trying to transplant it on foreign shores. Base Ball teams of America have invaded foreign countries before.

Over 46 games, the White Sox won 24 and lost 20, with two games ending in ties.

SOX DEFEAT GIANTS AT NICE BEFORE A FASHIONABLE CROWD.

The fine weather today brought a great crowd of baseball enthusiasts, as well as many who never had seen such a game, to the inclosure where the New Yprk Giants and the Chicago White Sox gave a fast exhibition of the American national pastime. The Sox won, 10 to 9.

Americans and foreigners of titles sojourning in Nice and along the Riviera motored to the game, which had been eagerly looked forward to, and the large number of handsomely gowned women among the spectators added to the gayety of the scene.

The French were somewhat puzzled at the intricacies of the play, which they found difficult to understand, but they showed much enthusiasm when the ball was hit hard into the outfield. The American consul, William D. Hunter, tossed the first ball to the Chicago catcher. In the fourth inning the Giants scored six runs and the Sox four.

Interesting features were a series of daring evolutions over the field by the aviator Lacrouse and an exhibition of throwing the discus and putting the shot by James Thorpe, the Indian athlete.

COMISKEY AND SOX CHEERED BY 700 FANS AT BANQUET

Skeleton of federals looks in at feast for returning tourists, but finds no welcome among throng at the tables.

“Commy’s” come home. So has “Cal.” More than 700 cheering baseball fans filled the gold banquet room of the Congress Hotel last night to show how glad they were that the Old Roman and his younger confrere were once more in their midst.

From the time that Father James Scanlan pronounced the invocation until long after midnight the fun continued, and Judge Adelor Petit, who was tastmaster par excellence, very truthfully said:

We have a perfectly good excuse tonight for indulgence in a rip roaring good time, so let’s have it

There were just two things that ever so slightly marred the complete pleasure of the home-coming celebration. One was the fact that “Muggsy” McGraw was not present, having started for his training camp. The other was the fact that once or twice the grinning face of the Federal League sweleton peeped in at the door, but was quickly chased away.

American League and National League sat side by side. On either side of them were represented the old American Association and the Brotherhood, while Ted Sulllivan was a living reminder of the days when he gave “Commy” his first job as a professional ball player.

Besides Judge Petit there were four other members of the Cook County judiciary at the speakers’ table. They were Judge Charles Foell, Judge Charles A. McDonald, Judge M. L. McKinley and Judge Denis E. Sullivan.

Ban Johnson and Garry Herrmann sat side by side, with Jim Callahan between them and “Commy.” On the other side of the toastmaster were Cap Anson and Ted Sullivan.

Roger Sullivan There Representing Muggsy McGraw was John B. Foster, secretary of the New York Giants. Another county dignitary was County Clerk Bob Sweitzer. Joe Farrell was another of the old-time baseball players at the same table, while the absolute laity was represented by Colonel IltouJ. Foreman, John Maynard Harlan, Drury Underwood and James G. Condon.

Not until the speechmaklng was well under way was a vacant chair at Judge Petit’s right claimed—by none other than Roger C. Sullivan. Among the other guests were Fred Pfeffer, who played second base in the old “stonewall infield”— Pfeffer, Anson, Williamson and Burns.

Eddie Farrell was there. Tom Dawson was particularly “there,” and he sang the “Lorelei.” Asked why Dawson should be singing a song of the “Vaterland,” he modestly admitted that he always had been an all around athlete.

Pete O’Brien, Frank Houseman, Hank Troy and Frauk MeNiehols completed the galaxy of men who made baseball famous and every one of them came in for a rousing cheer.

Comiskey and Callahan Cheered. Judge Petit started the ball rolling by calling for three cheers for Commy. Somebodv misunderstood, for three times three were given. Then Cal came in for an ovation, and as the tumult subsided, Judge Petit started something. He said.

How many are there here who would We to see John Connery buy the Cubs?

As far as could be counted there were 703, not counting Mr. Connery, who modestly refused to vote for himself. Later= Judge McDonald made a significant relark. He said:

If there is any man here to-night, or anywhere in the world, of whom Commy may ever have reason to feel jealous, It is Johnny Connery, whom we all hope to see managing the Cubs in the near future.

Very large quantities of applause.

Germany Schaeffer made his debut as an impresario. He called his grand uproar troupe to the gallery and led them in a soul-inspiring rendition of “Oh, du Schoenes. Ob, Magnolius.”

What do you call a male prima donna? Anyway, these were those:

Tris Speaker, more than $20,000 beauty; Jack Bliss, all the way from Sacramento Buck Weaver, nuff sed; Andy Slight, whom Jean de Keszke advised to give up baseball aud become the world’s greatest singer; Johnny Faber, touted as considerable pitcher: Gus Axelson, who is not Irish; Dick Egan, all the way from Brooklyn and entitled to a good time; Walter Leverentz of St. Louis, pax voblscum;

Jack Sheridan, the umpest umpire of them all. Every one was glad that Oscar Hammerstein wasn’t there. He would have fainted from exasperation or something.

Comiskey’s Speech Short. Dave Olmsted of the Planters, Johnny Hardlng, Eddie Redpath, Jake Sternad and Frank Houseman furnished about twenty numbers, one being especially spectacular.

All the lights were extinguished, then big spotlight glowed on the entrance next the speakers’ table and in came eight lads wearing Sox and Giants uniforms carrying a big float.

On the float was Miss Doris Reber with her arm around Johnny Harding’s albino deer, both flag draped, and as they were carried around the hall in the glare of the spotlight Miss Reber led the crowd in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America.”

Then “Smiley” Corbett brought down the house by singing “The Home Plate,” dedicated to Commy’s country home up the Wisconsin woods. Joe Farrell wrote the words and the late Tom Hamton wrote the music.

By the time Judge Petit rapped for order and announced that the speeches were about to begin the guests had absorbed enough Mumms to almost float ship, and every one wanted to hear Commy.

The Old Roman rose slowly, and it was not necessary to tell that he had been sick. But to say that he was overjoyed at the reception would be stating it mildly. He contented himself by thanking tbe guests for their good wishes and cheery greetings, and said:

Just before I left Rome my doctor told Mrs. Comiskey she had better let me go to Paris. She asked why, and he said that I would be two days nearer Chicago, and that was what I needed.

Loved looking at the pictures of the World Tour! My great uncle was Buck Weaver, so it is extra special to see photos I have never seen before. We do have some family pictures from the tour, including one of just the players in front of the Great Sphinx. But I have never seen some of these pictures before, especially of their time in Tokyo and Paris. My aunt did have a menu from the Lusitania also that Uncle Buck gave here as a memento.

Women's College World Series 2024 live: Updates, score for UCLA vs. Oklahoma softball game

baseball world tour

Two of the most storied softball programs in the country meet today in Game 7 of the Women's College World Series. No. 6-seed UCLA - a program with 12 NCAA softball championships - faces off against three-time defending champions and No. 2-seed Oklahoma.

Women's College World Series: Softball teams battle to win 2024 NCAA tournament

Despite Oklahoma's recent dominance, the Sooners have a losing record against the Bruins in the Women's College World Series at 3-4. These two teams faced off in the championship series in 2019. UCLA won but Oklahoma has won every series since.

Oklahoma's won their last 10 games in a row and UCLA's rattled off 14 consecutive victories. One of those streaks has to end Saturday in Oklahoma City.

Kelly Maxwell sets season-high with 11 strikeouts

Maxwell struck out Thessa Malau'ulu to open the seventh inning and set a new season-high.

UCLA holds Sooners scoreless in the sixth

Tinsley notched two strikeouts in the frame to keep the deficit at 1-0 heading into the final inning.

Maxwell ties season-high with 10 strikeouts

With two on, Oklahoma's Kelly Maxwell struck out Ramsey Suarez to hold UCLA scoreless again and tie her season-high of 10 strikeouts. Sooners lead 1-0.

Bruins get two on in the sixth

A infield single to second got Megan Grant to first and a walk for Jordan Woolery makes it two on for UCLA with one out. Lauren Hatch is in to run for Grant.

Sooners go scoreless to close fifth inning

It took Tinsley and the Bruins just 11 pitches to get three outs and retire the Sooners' side. Oklahoma's lead stays at 1-0.

Taylor Tinsley in the circle for UCLA

After four innings pitched, Kaitlyn Terry is done for the day and Tinsley heads to the circle for the Bruins in the bottom of the fifth.

Oklahoma retires UCLA without a run once again

Jadelyn Allchin's fly out to right field made it three outs with one on for the Bruins. Sooners hold a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Kelly Maxwell earns strikeout No. 8

Maxwell struck out Maya Brady for a third time today to tie her tournament-high with eight strikeouts in this game.

Meoño catches the third out for UCLA

Cydney Sanders made it to first with two outs after getting hit by a Kaitlyn Terry pitch. But Meoño caught Jayda Coleman's fly out to centerfield to retire the Sooners' side. Oklahoma's stays at 1-0.

Sooners hold UCLA scoreless in fourth inning

A Seneca Curo ground out to third made it three outs and another scoreless inning for the Bruins. Oklahoma leads 1-0.

Terry strikes out Hansen to close third inning

After the overturned call, Hansen struck out swinging on the next pitch. UCLA's Kaitlyn Terry retired the side to keep the score 1-0.

Oklahoma successfully challenges catch behind home plate

With one on and two outs, UCLA's Sharlize Palacios made a diving catch behind home base to earn a third out. Oklahoma challenged the ruling of a catch and upon further review, it was ruled a foul ball. 2-2 count for Kinzie Hansen.

UCLA's Meoño robs a home run from Pickering

Like Jennings before her, Pickering hit a shot deep to centerfield but Janelle Meoño made the catch to get the out.

Jennings breaks the scoring open with home run

After two and a half scoreless innings, Tiare Jennings went deep to centerfield on the first pitch of the bottom of the third. It's her ninth career home run in the Women's College World Series. Oklahoma leads 1-0.

Maxwell earns strikeout No. 6 to close third inning

UCLA had two on and two outs with Sharlize Palacios at the plate. Oklahoma's Kelly Maxwell rebounded from a rough start to the inning and struck her out to retire UCLA's side after a scoreless half of the inning.

Avery Hodge enters the game for Oklahoma

After an infield fly hit Alynah Torres in the head, Hodge came in at second base.

Two on for UCLA with no outs

UCLA's Thessa Malau'ulu and Janelle Meoño made it to first and second with no outs. Brady's next up in the order and Oklahoma pitcher Kelly Maxwell took a meeting in the circle to get reset.

Oklahoma held scoreless again to close second inning

UCLA got two outs early with a ground out and a fly to right field in quick succession. Terry walked Sanders to give Oklahoma one on but Coleman ground out to her to close the inning. Score remains 0-0 through two frames.

Another quick inning for Maxwell, Oklahoma

A strikeout, a catch by Cydney Sanders at first on a line driver, and another strikeout in quick succession retired the Bruins' side in 12 pitches. She's up to four strikeouts over the first two innings.

Terry ends the inning with three on

Oklahoma had bases loaded with Kinzie Hansen at the plate. Terry struck her out swinging in four pitches to retire the Sooners' side and keep the game at 0-0.

Sooners load the bases

A wild pitch brought Coleman to third and Jennings to second. A walk for Kasidi Pickering loads the bases for Oklahoma with two outs in the first inning.

Megan Grant makes a huge catch for UCLA

With two on and one out, Oklahoma's Alyssa Brito hit a ball deep to right field and Grant made a crucial catch to sevure the second out and keep Coleman at second and Tiare Jennings at first.

Jayda Coleman walked to open bottom of the first inning

Kaitlyn Terry nearly hit Coleman with her ninth pitch and gave the Sooners senior a walk to first.

Maxwell notches two strikeouts in the first inning

Maxwell nearly had three strikeouts in row before an error on a Sharlize Palacios hit got the Bruins catcher to first base. Megan Grant couldn't make it to first in time and was out to retire the Bruins' side for the first inning. Score remains 0-0.

Maxwell strikes out Brady to open the game

Maya Brady stepped up to the plate first for the Bruins to start the first inning. Oklahoma pitcher Kelly Maxwell struck her out swinging in four pitches.

UCLA vs. Oklahoma predictions

The oklahoman : oklahoma 8, ucla 4.

Justin Martinez writes: "OU's offense didn't have much trouble scoring against Duke, which entered Thursday's WCWS opener with the third-best team ERA in the nation (1.55). Now the Sooners will face the Bruins, who have a young pitching duo of freshman Kaitlyn Terry and sophomore Taylor Tinsley. Both players earned All-Pac-12 first team selections this season, but asking them to contain an experienced OU offense on the sport's biggest stage is a tall order."

Heartland College Sports : Oklahoma 9, UCLA 4

Bryan Clinton says: "Oklahoma’s offense was on fire against an excellent Duke pitching staff, and while UCLA has been playing terrific softball of late, their staff ranks seventh out of eight teams that made it to OKC with a 2.71-team ERA. If the Sooners’ bats stay hot, they should be able to pull away in this one. I’m not predicting a third consecutive shutout in the series, as OU’s pitching staff isn’t as good as it was in 2022 or 2023, but this group of seniors has had a vendetta against UCLA, and that will continue."

Sporting News : Oklahoma

Edward Sutelan writes: "The Sooners are once again dominant in nearly all facets of the game. They rank seventh in team ERA (1.85), first in on-base percentage (.473) and second in slugging percentage (.724) among all Division I teams. They have outscored opponents 483-107 this season."

How did UCLA get here?

The Bruins won their third Pac-12 conference regular season championship of the last four years behind a five-game winning streak to close the season. In the conference tournament, UCLA took care of business against Arizona State 6-0 before one-run wins over Arizona (6-5) and Utah (2-1) secured their title.

UCLA opened the NCAA softball tournament with wins over Grand Canyon (9-0), Virginia Tech (7-6), and Grand Canyon (9-1) again in the regionals round. In the super regionals, the Bruins beat Georgia twice by a combined score of 14-1 to secure a spot in the Women's College World Series bracket. They opened with a 4-1 win over Alabama Thursday to secure their spot against Oklahoma today.

How did Oklahoma get here?

For the first time since 2011, Oklahoma did not win the Big 12 regular season title. Texas took the title by one win but Oklahoma got back on top in the Big 12 conference tournament by beating the Longhorns 5-1 in the championship game.

The three-time defending NCAA champions have kept the winning up from there. In the regionals round, Oklahoma beat Cleveland State 9-0 before beating Oregon twice by a combined score of 9-5. In the super regionals, Oklahoma beat Florida State 11-3 and 4-2 to make it to the Women's College World Series bracket. They started the final part of the tournament with a 9-1 win over Duke Thursday.

UCLA players to watch

LHP Kaitlyn Terry, Fr.

Terry's Women's College World Series debut in the circle went well against Alabama. She allowed four hits, one run, and recorded three strikeouts in four innings pitched. She's posted a 21-1 record this season and finished second on the team in ERA (2.35) and strikeouts (154). In a game against one of the best hitting teams in the country, she'll be a key factor for the Bruins.

  • SS Maya Brady, Sr.

Brady's long been one of the best hitters on the team and this season was no different. She's leading the team in hits (71), runs (59), and RBI (68) with the second-best batting average (.436). She's stepped up in the tournament, going 13-for-19 from the plate with 11 runs scored and seven RBI. Oklahoma's the second-highest scoring team in the country. UCLA will likely need Brady to continue that production to keep up.

Oklahoma players to watch

LHP Kelly Maxwell, Gr.

Maxwell came to Norman as a graduate student this year following a successful career with Oklahoma State. She proceeded to post a 20-2 record and lead the team in strikeouts (136) with a 1.96 ERA. In the tournament, she's allowed just seven hits and five runs in 17.2 innings pitched. UCLA's not as productive as Oklahoma from the plate but the Bruins are no easy matchup. Another strong showing from the circle by Maxwell could keep the Sooners on track for a fourth consecutive title.

INF Tiare Jennings, Sr.

In a lineup stacked with productive hitters, the First Team All-American may be the most important one. She holds multiple Women's College World Series records is enjoying a solid run this year. She's gone 8-for-20 from the plate (including three home runs) with six runs scored and six RBI in the tournament. Some of her biggest performances in the Women's College World Series have come against UCLA and she could step up once again.

UCLA lineup

  • LF Jadelyn Allchin, Gr.
  • C Sharlize Palacios, Sr.
  • RF Megan Grant, So.
  • 1B Jordan Woolery, So.
  • DP Savannah Pola, Jr.
  • 2B Seneca Curo, Sr.
  • 3B Thessa Malau'ulu, Sr.
  • CF Janelle Meoño, Sr.

Starting pitcher: Kaitlyn Terry

Oklahoma lineup

  • CF Jayda Coleman, Sr.
  • SS Tiare Jennings, Sr.
  • DP Ella Parker, Fr.
  • 3B Alyssa Brito, Sr.
  • LF Kasidi Pickering, Fr.
  • C Kinzie Hansen, Gr.
  • RF Rylie Boone, Sr.
  • 2B Alynah Torres, Sr.
  • 1B Cydney Sanders, Jr.

Russian Foreign Minister Visits Guinea on Africa Influence Tour

R ussian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived on Monday in Guinea, his ministry said, marking his first trip to the West African country since 2013.

Moscow, which has seen its relations with the West plummet since invading Ukraine in February 2022, has in recent years sought to boost its influence in Africa.

Russia's Foreign Ministry announced Monday's visit on Telegram with a photo of Lavrov at Conakry airport but did not provide further details on the trip.

The state-run TASS news agency reported that Guinea would be part of a larger tour of African countries but did not specify what other nations on the continent Lavrov plannet to visit.

Russian media outlets reported that the foreign minister may also travel to Chad and Burkina Faso during the tour.

In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited African leaders to a summit in St. Petersburg where he said they agreed to promote a multipolar world order and to fight neocolonialism.

Putin hailed the "commitment of all our states to the formation of a just and democratic multipolar world order" during a statement to the media following the summit.
