Spain tightens travel restrictions amid concerns over omicron coronavirus variant

Visitors from the united kingdom who are not eu residents will now only be able to enter the country if they are fully vaccinated, while those from ‘high-risk’ areas will need to provide a negative covid test in addition to proof of vaccination.

omicron España

The Spanish government has tightened entry requirements to the country due to concerns over the new variant of the coronavirus , named omicron by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Under the new rules, published Saturday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), travelers from “high-risk” countries will need to present proof of being fully vaccinated, or of having recovered from Covid-19, as well as a “diagnostic certificate of an active Covid-19 infection with a negative result.”

According to the BOE, seven countries are currently classified as high-risk: Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Travelers from these countries will need to present a negative Covid-19 test – for example, a PCR test taken within 78 hours – regardless of whether they are fully vaccinated or have recovered from the disease. Travelers from these seven countries will also be subject to a mandatory 10-day quarantine, according to a separate order published Monday by the Spanish Health Ministry.

The European Union on Friday proposed suspending all flights to and from these seven nations in southern Africa, while the European Commission indicated that it will establish new entry requirements for visitors from high-risk areas. The Spanish government on Friday also announced plans to restrict flights from South Africa and Botswana at its next Cabinet meeting, which will take place on Tuesday. Spain does not have any direct commercial flights between South Africa or Botswana, but passengers can travel to the country from these countries via connecting flights, cargo planes or private planes.

The entry requirements, released by Spain’s Interior Ministry on Saturday, also contained new rules for non-essential visits from the United Kingdom. Starting December 1, passengers from these areas will only be able to enter the country if they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Up until now, visitors from the UK had been able to enter Spain if they could show proof they had been fully vaccinated or had a negative PCR test result taken up to 72 hours before arriving. According to detailed information released by the Spanish embassy in London (and which can be viewed in English here ), this change does not apply to those under 12 years old, Spanish citizens, or EU citizens and their family members.

The information states that British and other third-country citizens coming from a risk area or country – which includes the United Kingdom – can travel to Spain for an “essential trip” if they are “duly accredited long-term residents in the EU, Schengen Associate States, Andorra, Monaco, The Holy See or San Marino, in transit to their country of residence.” They can do so on presentation of “a vaccination certificate, negative PCR, LAMP, TMA or antigen test certificate, or a certificate of recovery.” British or other third country citizens coming from a risk country – including the UK – for tourism or other non-essential reasons require a vaccination certificate if aged over 12.

📢Attention travellers to 🇪🇸: please read carefully the following guidance❗️ pic.twitter.com/H4aK62ngG6 — Embassy of Spain UK (@EmbSpainUK) November 30, 2021

The order in the BOE explained: “The appearance of new variants causing [coronavirus] obliges an increase in restrictions.”

The UK is likewise tightening travel restrictions due to the emergence of the omicron variant. Starting November 30, fully vaccinated travelers returning to England and Scotland from Spain must self-isolate and take a PCR test before the end of the second day of their arrival. Travellers will be able to break quarantine on receipt of a negative result from said test. Wales has announced similar plans, according to the BBC , as has Northern Ireland, according to a statement released by the Northern Irish Department of Health on Saturday .

Omicron variant

Sources from the Spanish Health Ministry confirmed on Friday that no cases of the omicron variant have so far been detected in Spain. Despite this, there are still concerns over the strain as it is considered more contagious and more likely to evade the current Covid-19 vaccines .

“In the last few days, a significant increase in the number of Covid-19 cases was detected in a province of South Africa, which has led to the identification of a new variant that has numerous mutations related to a possible rise in transmissibility and a drop in the neutralizing capacity of antibodies [from the vaccines],” the order on the new entry requirements explained.

On Monday, Portugal announced that it had detected 13 cases of omicron.

A resolution approved by the Health Ministry added that the new variant “highlights the need to have an agile mechanism that allows additional health measures to be adopted for people from high-risk countries due to their worsening epidemiological situation or in which especially worrying variants have been detected.” These measures would be applied via a list of at-risk and high-risk countries. “More than concern, what is needed is action,” sources from the Health Ministry told EL PAÍS.

On Monday, the WHO said that the new variant poses a “very high” global risk. This statement comes just days after the health organization elevated the risk level for omicron as “ a variant of concern ” on Friday. This is the fifth strain to receive this classification since the beginning of the pandemic. The new variant has 30 mutations, and there are fears that this could make it spread faster than other strains.

“This variant has a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning. Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs [variants of concern],” explained the press release from the WHO on Friday.

Although it is common for a virus to mutate as it spreads among the population, these mutations become “worrying” when there are signs that they make the virus more transmissible, trigger more serious illness or enable infections to escape the protection offered by vaccines or the antibodies produced naturally following recovery from the disease.

Due to the emergence of new COVID-19 variants, many countries have implemented stricter travel regulations, including Spain. Currently, individuals traveling from South Africa to Spain face certain restrictions and requirements.

First and foremost, it is important to check and comply with the entry requirements set by the Spanish government. All travelers must complete a mandatory Health Control Form before their arrival in Spain. This form can be completed online and must include personal information, contact details, and details about any recent travels. Individuals are also required to provide a negative COVID-19 test result. The accepted tests are PCR tests taken within 72 hours prior to arrival or antigen tests taken within 48 hours prior to arrival. The test results must be presented in either Spanish, English, French, or German.

In addition to the negative test result, it is mandatory for all travelers coming from South Africa to self-isolate for a period of 10 days upon arrival. This quarantine period can be shortened to seven days if the individual undergoes a PCR test on the seventh day and tests negative. The test must be scheduled in advance and the negative result must be submitted to the competent authorities.

It is important to note that these restrictions and requirements may change at any time based on the current COVID-19 situation. Therefore, it is crucial to stay updated with the latest information from reliable sources such as the official websites of the Spanish government, the Spanish embassy or consulate in South Africa, and the South African Ministry of Health.

To ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey, it is also recommended to check with the airline regarding any additional requirements they may have. Some airlines may have specific guidelines or documentation that travelers need to fulfill before boarding.

In conclusion, individuals traveling from South Africa to Spain face certain travel restrictions and requirements due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These include completing a Health Control Form, presenting a negative COVID-19 test result, and undergoing a mandatory quarantine period. It is important to regularly check for updates and comply with all guidelines to ensure a safe and successful journey.

It is important to note that each country has its own definition of what constitutes essential travel and has specific guidelines and requirements that must be followed.

In the case of South Africa and Spain, there are some exemptions and special considerations for essential travel. These exemptions are aimed at minimizing the disruption to critical services and ensuring the safety of individuals who must travel for essential reasons.

One exemption for essential travel between South Africa and Spain is for individuals who need to travel for medical reasons. This includes individuals who require specialized medical treatment that is not available in their home country. These individuals may need to provide proof of their appointments or specialized care arrangements.

Another exemption is for individuals who need to travel for work or business purposes. This may include essential workers who are involved in critical infrastructure or services that cannot be disrupted. These individuals may need to provide documentation from their employer or business partner to support their claim for essential travel.

In some cases, individuals may also be granted exemptions for essential travel due to family emergencies. This includes situations where immediate family members are experiencing a medical emergency or death. Individuals may need to provide documentation such as medical reports or death certificates to support their claim for essential travel.

It is worth noting that even if individuals are granted exemptions for essential travel, they may still be subject to certain requirements and restrictions. For example, individuals may need to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result taken within a certain timeframe before travel. They may also be required to undergo quarantine or self-isolation upon arrival in the destination country.

In order to determine whether they qualify for an exemption or special consideration for essential travel, individuals should consult the official websites of the relevant government authorities in South Africa and Spain. These websites will provide the most up-to-date information on travel restrictions, exemptions, and requirements.

In conclusion, while international travel restrictions have made it challenging to travel between South Africa and Spain, there are exemptions and special considerations for essential travel. These exemptions are aimed at minimizing disruption and ensuring the safety of individuals who must travel for essential reasons. Latest News on International Travel Restrictions: Where Can You Go and What Are the Requirements?

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world have implemented various travel restrictions and guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus. One such restriction is the limitation on travel from certain countries, including South Africa, to Spain.

The travel restrictions in place for individuals coming from South Africa to Spain are expected to be in place for a certain period of time. The exact duration of these restrictions may vary depending on the evolving situation of the pandemic and the effectiveness of control measures. It is important to note that the information provided in this article is current as of the time of writing and might change in the future.

Spain, like many other countries, has implemented travel restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19. These restrictions aim to minimize the risk of importing new cases from countries with a high number of infections or the presence of new variants of concern. South Africa, in particular, has been identified as a high-risk country due to the emergence of the Beta variant of the virus.

The duration of the travel restrictions for individuals coming from South Africa to Spain is subject to regular review by health authorities. The Spanish government, in coordination with public health agencies, will assess the status of the pandemic in South Africa and the effectiveness of control measures. Based on this assessment, they will determine whether it is safe to lift or extend the travel restrictions.

The decision to lift or extend the travel restrictions is guided by scientific evidence and expert advice. Health authorities analyze the epidemiological situation in South Africa, including the number of COVID-19 cases, the presence of new variants, and the country's vaccination rate. They also consider the capacity of the healthcare system to respond to potential imported cases.

It is worth noting that travel restrictions are not implemented indefinitely. They are put in place as a temporary measure to prevent the importation of COVID-19 cases and to allow authorities to manage the pandemic effectively. Once the situation improves and the risk of importing new cases decreases, the travel restrictions are likely to be lifted.

To illustrate the potential duration of travel restrictions, let's consider an example. Suppose South Africa experiences a surge in COVID-19 cases and the Beta variant remains a significant concern. In this scenario, the travel restrictions may be extended until the situation stabilizes, and measures are in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

However, if South Africa successfully controls the spread of the virus, implements effective control measures, and reduces the number of cases and the presence of new variants, the travel restrictions may be lifted sooner.

In conclusion, the travel restrictions for individuals coming from South Africa to Spain are expected to be in place for a certain period of time. The exact duration will depend on the evolving situation of the pandemic, the presence of new variants, and the effectiveness of control measures. Health authorities will regularly review the situation and make informed decisions based on scientific evidence and expert advice. It is crucial for individuals to stay updated with the latest travel advisories and follow the guidelines provided by health authorities to ensure safe and responsible travel during these times.

Spain Extends Travel Ban for Brazil & South Africa Until July 20

Denmark to Renew Residence Permits for Students Undergoing Education for Professions Experiencing Shortages

Eu won’t increase schengen visa fees for everyone: here’s who will be exempt, professional models can now work in denmark for short periods without a work permit, cyprus officially revokes golden passport of malaysian businessman jho low, lithuania revokes about 1,500 residence permits, bans over 1,200 foreigners from entering country.

The Spanish authorities have announced that the country will further extend the measures imposed on arrivals from Brazil and South Africa due to the high COVID-19 infection rates.

As such, the existing travel advice on the entry ban for the two countries will be effective from July 6 until July 20, .

According to the new restrictions imposed by the Spanish Government, arrivals from Brazil and South Africa landing at the country’s airports will not be permitted to enter the country.

Following the update, flights from South Africa and Brazil to Spain are restricted, and only the following groups of people are allowed to enter Spain:

  • Nationals of Spain or Andorra
  • Residents of Spain or Andorra
  • Persons transiting through Spain to reach another country with a stopover of fewer than 24 hours without leaving the transit zone of the airport
  • State aircraft, Spanish search and rescue services (SAR), flights with a stopover in the territory of Spain for non-commercial purposes who have their final destination in another country, apart from cargo flights and medical, emergency, or humanitarian flights.

Nonetheless, some exceptions are made for several categories of people wishing to travel from South Africa or Brazil, which include:

  • Legal residents of the European Union, Schengen Area countries, Andorra, Monaco, the Vatican City State, and San Marino with documented evidence
  • Persons holding a long-term visa issued by a Member State/Schengen Area country who are travelling to the issuing country
  • Healthcare professionals, including elderly care professionals and health researchers going to or returning from a work-related trip
  • Seafarers, transport personnel, and aeronautical personnel who carry essential transport activities
  • Personnel of humanitarian, diplomatic, military, civil protection, and consular organisations
  • Students who are studying in Member States/Schengen countries who hold the corresponding visa and medical insurance
  • Highly qualified workers who carry out essential duties that can not be postponed or fulfilled remotely, including sporting events participants
  • Persons travelling for essential family purposes

Those who are permitted entry into Spain are required to fill in a Health Control Form and provide proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test result, or proof of the previous recovery.

The number of deaths related to the Coronavirus in Brazil has passed 500,000, positioning the country as the second-highest in the world. If such figures continue, experts expect that the outbreak can worsen due to the slow vaccination scheme and the start of winter in the southern hemisphere.

Similarly, the COVID-19 Delta variant and slow vaccination rates have pushed South Africa back into lockdown.

Previously, Spain extended the ban on arrivals from Algeria and Morocco and several other non-EU/Schengen Area countries.

South Africa Travel Advisory

Travel advisory february 5, 2024, south africa - level 2: exercise increased caution.

Updated to reflect safety consideration when using GPS navigation.

Exercise increased caution in South Africa due to  crime  and  civil unrest .

Country Summary:   Violent crime, such as armed robbery, rape, carjacking, mugging, and "smash-and-grab" attacks on vehicles, is common. There is a higher risk of violent crime in the central business districts of major cities after dark.

Using GPS navigation can lead to unsafe routes. GPS navigation may suggest shortcuts through townships as the quickest preferred route but can lead to increased risks of crime.

There have been incidents in which tourists traveling in Cape Town while using GPS navigation apps have been routed through residential areas with high rates of violent crime. The safest approach to return a rental car to Cape Town International Airport is to take the N2 highway and follow signs to Airport Approach Rd ( exit 16 ). Alternatively, request the rental car company to collect your vehicle and subsequently arrange an airport transfer from established taxi companies or established ridesharing services to reach the airport.

Demonstrations, protests, and strikes occur frequently. These can develop quickly without prior notification, often interrupting traffic, transportation, and other services; such events have the potential to turn violent.

Please see our  Alerts  for up-to-date information.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to South Africa.

Spain applies to join South Africa’s case at top UN court accusing Israel of genocide

south africa to spain travel restrictions

Spain Israel FILE - Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno addresses a media conference prior to talks on the Middle East in Brussels, on May 27, 2024. Spain says it will ask a United Nations court for permission to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. BARCELONA, Spain — (AP) — Spain became on Thursday the first European country to ask a United Nations court for permission to join South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.

South Africa filed its case with the International Court of Justice late last year. It alleged that Israel was breaching the genocide convention in its military assault that has laid waste to large swaths of Gaza.

The court has ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah but stopped short of ordering a cease-fire for the enclave. Israel has not complied and shows no sign of doing so.

“There should be no doubt that Spain will remain on the right side of history,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said after his foreign minister made the announcement.

Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Libya and the Palestinians are waiting for the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, to grant approval to their requests to join the case .

Israel denies it is committing genocide in its military operation to crush Hamas triggered by its deadly Oct. 7 attacks in southern Israel.

Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 250 more hostage in the surprise attacks. Israel's air and land attacks have since killed 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry , which doesn't distinguish between combatants and civilians.

“We take the decision because of the ongoing military operation in Gaza,” Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said in Madrid. “We want peace to return to Gaza and the Middle East, and for that to happen we must all support the court.”

Once admitted to the case, Spain would be able to make written submissions and speak at public hearings.

Spain’s request is the latest move by Sánchez's left-wing coalition to support peacemaking efforts in Gaza.

Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognized a Palestinian state on May 28 in a coordinated effort by the three Western European nations. Slovenia, a European Union member along with Spain and Ireland, followed suit and recognized the Palestinian state this week.

Over 140 countries have recognized a Palestinian state — more than two-thirds of the U.N. — but none of the major Western powers, including the United States, has done so.

While Sánchez has condemned the attacks by Hamas and joined demands for the return of the remaining Israeli hostages, he has not shied away from the diplomatic backlash from Israel. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said that by recognizing a Palestinian state, Sánchez’s government was “being complicit in inciting genocide against Jews and war crimes.”

Sánchez’s backing of the Palestinians is generally supported in Spain, where some university students have followed their American counterparts in protesting on campuses. Spaniards will vote in elections for the European Parliament elections on Sunday.

Last year, the International Court of Justice allowed 32 countries, including Spain, to join Ukraine's case alleging that Russia breached the genocide convention by falsely accusing Ukraine of committing genocide in its eastern Luhansk and Donetsk regions, and using that as a pretext for the invasion.

Preliminary hearings have already been held in the genocide case against Israel, but the court is expected to take years to reach a final decision.

Albares said the decision by Spain's government had the immediate objective of adding pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to follow the court’s interim measures to stop bloodshed in Rafah.

“I insist once again that these interim measures must be complied with,” Albares said. “Whether this is genocide or not, that is for the court to decide, and Spain of course will support its decision.”

Israel sent troops into the southern city of Rafah in early May in what it said was a limited incursion, but those forces are now operating in central parts of the city. Last week, Israeli strikes hit near a U.N. Palestinian refugee agency facility in Rafah, saying they were targeting Hamas militants. An inferno that followed ripped through nearby tents housing displaced families , killing at least 45 people .

More than 1 million people have fled Rafah since the start of the operation, scattering across southern and central Gaza into new tent camps or crowding into schools and homes.

Netanyahu is also facing a separate legal challenge from the International Criminal Court, whose prosecutor is seeking an arrest warrant against the Israeli leader and others, including leaders of the Hamas militant group. The U.N. General Assembly endorses the ICC, but the court is independent.

Countries That Start With 'Z' and How They Got Their Names

I f you were to explore the world alphabetically, you’d find 27 countries starting with "s" — like Spain, Sweden and South Africa — each with its own rich history and vibrant culture. But when you get to "X," the map draws a blank; no countries start with that elusive letter.

When you get to the end of the alphabet, countries that start with "Z" may be few and far between, but their histories pack a real punch.

From the dynamic landscapes and cultural heritage of Zambia and Zimbabwe to the historical significance of former nations like Zaire and Zululand, these countries hold special tales and traditions.

Countries That Start With the Letter 'Z'

Currently, only two countries start with the letter "Z," and they are both located in the sprawling continent of Africa. Zambia and Zimbabwe might be neighbors, but they each have their own unique flair and intriguing stories. Let's dive into what makes these two Zs so special.

Zambia is named after the mighty Zambezi River, a defining feature of the country’s geography. Located in southern Africa, Zambia is a landlocked country bordered by eight other nations.

When Zambia gained independence from British colonial rule in 1964, the name was chosen to symbolize a fresh start and a nod to its natural heritage. The Zambezi, which means "Great River," reflects the country's rich landscape and abundant water resources.

One of the Zambezi River's most spectacular features is Victoria Falls , located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. As one of the largest and most famous waterfalls in the world, it's locally known as "The Smoke That Thunders." It’s a sight that’ll leave you speechless (and probably a bit damp).

And with water comes animals: Zambia is also renowned for its incredible wildlife. This paradise for safari enthusiasts offers a chance to see the Big Five — the lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo, originally named by hunters for their difficulty to hunt on foot — and more.

For all of you foodies out there, don’t miss trying nshima , a staple maize dish that's as Zambian as it gets. It's usually served with relish, which can include vegetables, meat or fish.

Zambia is also one of the most urbanized countries in Africa, with a significant portion of its population living in cities like the capital, Lusaka. Visitors can explore vibrant markets, check out the Lusaka National Museum and enjoy the city's bustling nightlife.

Along with its bustling city centers, Zambia boasts numerous national parks and protected areas, reflecting a blend of urban and natural environments.

Zimbabwe got its name from the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, a historical site known for its impressive stone ruins. When the country gained independence from British rule in 1980, the name was chosen to reflect its rich cultural heritage and break away from its colonial past as Rhodesia.

The name "Zimbabwe" is derived from "dzimba-dza-mabwe," which means "houses of stone" in the Shona language — fitting for a country with such monumental architecture.

Zimbabwe shares more than just a starting letter and a continent with Zambia. Both countries are home to the majestic Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World , straddling their border. Both nations also offer vibrant wildlife experiences with numerous national parks perfect for safaris.

For culinary explorers, Zimbabwe’s signature maize dish, sadza , is quite similar to Zambia’s nshima. Sadza is a staple food in Zimbabwe, similar to polenta or grits, made from finely ground maize (corn) meal. It is a versatile dish that forms the cornerstone of many Zimbabwean meals.

To prepare sadza, the cook gradually adds maize meal to boiling water and stirs until the mixture reaches a thick, smooth consistency. The sadza usually cooks until it pulls away from the sides of the pot and the preparer can easily mold it with their hands.

In addition to its rich history and culinary delights, Zimbabwe offers a variety of activities for visitors. Explore the stunning Hwange National Park , renowned for its large elephant population and diverse wildlife. Or, visit the ancient ruins of Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage site that offers a glimpse into the country’s storied past.

Adventure seekers can enjoy white-water rafting and bungee jumping at Victoria Falls, while those looking for a more relaxed experience can take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River .

Historical Countries That Began With 'Z'

We've already explored the contemporary nations that start with "Z," but there's more to uncover in history. Let's delve into the stories of Zaire and Zululand, two historical entities that played crucial roles in shaping their regions' pasts.

Zaire was the name of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1971 to 1997. This name change occurred under the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko , who aimed to shed the country’s colonial past and promote an authentic African identity.

The name Zaire symbolized this new era of independence and pride. However, after Mobutu was ousted, the country reverted to its original name, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite the change back, the era of Zaire remains a significant chapter in Central African history, marking a period of both intense dictatorship and national identity transformation.

Zululand was a kingdom in what is now South Africa, prominent in the early 19th century under leaders like Shaka Zulu . The Zulu Kingdom was a formidable force in Southern Africa, known for its military prowess and organizational skills.

This kingdom played a major role in the region’s history before being annexed by the British Empire in 1887. Zululand remains a symbol of Zulu pride and cultural heritage, with its history reflecting the resilience and strength of the Zulu people.

The legacy of Zululand is still evident today in the cultural practices and societal structures of the Zulu nation.

6 Ways Countries Get Their Names

As you might imagine, a lot of thought goes into this complex and significant process, which is largely influenced by historical, cultural, political and geographical factors.

  • Historical or mythological roots : Many countries are named after historical figures, tribes or mythological entities. For instance, Thailand means "land of the free," reflecting its history of avoiding colonization.
  • Geographical features : Natural landmarks and geographic characteristics often inspire country names. For example, Nigeria is named after the Niger River, which flows through the country, while Iceland is named for its icy landscape. Japan, known as Nihon in Japanese, translates to either "origin of the sun" or "land of the rising sun," referring to its eastern location from China.
  • Cultural or ethnic groups : Some countries might be named after the dominant ethnic group or tribe in the area. Botswana is named after the Tswana people, while Germany is derived from the Latin word " Germania ," which the Romans used to describe the tribes in the region.
  • Colonial influence : Many countries' names are influenced by their colonial history. Ghana is believed to be named after the ancient Ghana Empire , chosen during the country's independence from British colonial rule to symbolize a rich and powerful heritage. India derives its name from the River Indus , a major landmark for European colonialists and traders.
  • Political decisions : Sometimes, names are chosen through political processes, especially during independence movements or regime changes. For example, the Czech Republic recently rebranded itself as Czechia for simplicity and modernization.
  • Language and linguistic evolution : The names can evolve due to linguistic changes and local dialects. Algeria comes from the Arabic "Al-Jazair," meaning "the islands," referring to the small islands along its coast. The name "Philippines" honors King Philip II of Spain , reflecting its colonial past.

Travel ban: SA and 10 other African countries taken off UK red list

The uk's health minister sajid javid said the travel ban is "now less effective in slowing the incursion of omicron from abroad"..

The UK is to drop 11 African countries, including South Africa, from its “red list” barring incoming travel, ministers said on Tuesday.

From 0400 GMT on Wednesday, all will be removed from the list, said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

The UK government had responded to the identification of the Omicron variant in South Africa by banning travel from 10 Southern African countries and Nigeria.

Currently, only people who are British or Irish citizens or have UK residence rights can fly in from the red-listed countries, and they have to quarantine in hotels on arrival.

“As always, we keep all our travel measures under review and we may impose new restrictions should there be a need to do so to protect public health,” Shapps tweeted.

Health Minister Sajid Javid also announced the measure to MPs in parliament as Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeks their backing for his new restrictions to curb the spread of Omicron.

Javid said the travel ban was being lifted because it is “now less effective in slowing the incursion of Omicron from abroad”.

‘Knee-jerk reactions’

As other nations were banning travel to and from South Africa, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) cautioned the countries “not to engage in knee-jerk reactions”.

Dirco said new variants had been detected in other countries as well, with these cases showing “no recent links with southern Africa”.

The department also said the reaction to other variants “is starkly different to cases in southern Africa”.

“This latest round of travel bans is akin to punishing South Africa for its advanced genomic sequencing and the ability to detect new variants quicker.

“Excellent science should be applauded and not punished.”

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Vladimir Putin repeats warning he could send weapons to adversaries of the West

Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Vladimir Putin also says he does not see the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons as set out in Russia's nuclear doctrine - but adds he could not rule out a change to it.

Thank you for reading.

We will be back soon with more updates from the war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has said he does not see the conditions for the use of nuclear weapons as set out in Russia's nuclear doctrine - but added he could not rule out a change to the doctrine.

"We have a nuclear doctrine which states that the use of nuclear arms is possible in an exceptional case, when the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country is threatened," he told the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"But the doctrine can be changed.

"The same applies to nuclear tests. We will carry out tests if needed, but so far there is no such need."

Russia could send weapons to adversaries of the West, Vladimir Putin has warned for a second time.

The Russian president repeated the warning from earlier this week during the St Petersburg Economic Forum.

He did not say what countries or entities he was referring to, and he stressed that Moscow is not doing it currently.

"If they supply (weapons) to the combat zone and call for using these weapons against our territory, why don't we have the right to do the same?" he told the crowds.

"But I'm not ready to say that we will be doing it tomorrow, either."

On Wednesday, Putin told international journalists that Russia could provide long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory.

He also reaffirmed Moscow's readiness to use nuclear weapons if it sees a threat to its sovereignty.

Joe Biden has apologised to Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the recent delay in approving new US aid for Ukraine.

Last month, following months of political disagreements, the Senate passed $95bn (£76.2bn) in war aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan .

"I apologise for those weeks of not knowing," the US president said.

"Some of our very conservative members [of Congress] were holding it up.

"But we got it done, finally. We're still in - completely, totally."

The Ukrainian president thanked his counterpart for American assistance.

"It's very important that you stay with us," he said.

"It's very important that in this unity, the United States of America, all American people stay with Ukraine, like it was during World War Two - how the United States helped to save human lives, to save Europe."

The two men were speaking in Paris, the day after D-Day commemorations in Normandy.

Russia needs to boost its use of non-Western currencies, Vladimir Putin said as he addressed the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

He also said his country needs to reduce imports while calling for a major expansion of its domestic financial markets.

Trade with Asia is soaring, he told delegates, adding that almost two fifths of Russian external trade is now in roubles.

The share conducted in US dollars, euros and other Western currencies has declined.

Russia will try to boost the share of settlements conducted in the currencies of BRICS countries - which include Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Mr Putin said.

"Last year, the share of payments for Russian exports in the so–called 'toxic' currencies of unfriendly states halved, while the share of the rouble in export and import transactions is growing - it is approaching 40% today," the president said.

Russia has referred to nations that imposed sanctions on it as "unfriendly".

The session begins with an address by the Russian president.

Vladimir Putin says there is a race among world powers to establish sovereignty.

He speaks of the need for countries to both establish partnerships and also to look internally to tackle challenges presented by the current global economic landscape.

Despite all the "obstacles and illegitimate sanctions", Russia remains one of the world's economic leaders, he says.

He adds that "friendly countries" - those that have not joined sanctions against Moscow - account for three quarters of Russia's mutual trade turnover, and praises them for that.

Countries including India and China have strengthened economic ties since Mr Putin launched his war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has taken to the stage in St Petersburg to address the International Economic Forum there.

He's joined by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwais and Bolivian President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora.

Chairing the session is Sergey Karaganov - a Russian political scientist.

We'll bring you any key lines here in this live blog.

A T-shirt is on sale at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum printed with a phrase attributed to Vladimir Putin, Sky News has discovered.

"If a fight is inevitable, throw the first punch," it says.

The Russian president reportedly said it in 2015.

He apparently explained that it was something he had learned while growing up on the streets of Leningrad - a former name of St Petersburg.

The Russian defence ministry has accused Ukraine of injuring 20 people, including children, in a missile attack on the Russian-controlled eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, using US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

Four of five missiles were shot down by air defence systems, the ministry said in a statement.

However, one of the missiles damaged two residential apartment blocks, it added, claiming it was deliberate.

Sky News is unable to verify the allegations.

There has been no immediate comment from Ukraine.

The European Commission supports starting EU accession talks with Ukraine, the country's prime minister has said.

Denys Shmyhal said the commission had confirmed in a report that Kyiv had fulfilled the remaining steps required to start negotiations.

"Now we expect our European partners to take the next step - to start negotiations on European Union membership this month," Mr Shmyhal said on Telegram.

Earlier (7.43am post) we reported that the commission was reportedly ready to recommend that accession talks get underway.

It is part of an attempt to signal support for Kyiv before Hungary takes over the rotating presidency of the EU next month, the Financial Times reported.

The EU announced earlier this year that it was sending an additional £42bn in aid to Ukraine - but only after  weeks of resistance from Hungary , which reportedly has concerns about minority rights in Ukraine.
