We are looking at a Douro cruise with Nicko. Is it correct that all announcements and tours are in German though?

Not quite. Depending on itinerary you have either all-German or English (bi-lingual) sailings. In practice it might not work as smoothly as it sounds. Also, for English language excursions there might be a minimum number of guests required. For the UK nicko cruises have partnered with an agent/representative. So sailings on the Douro on

16, 23 April 14, 28 May 25 June 09 July 20 August 03 September 08, 15, 22 October

are marketed to the English-speaking world.

For details of the deal look on cruisetradenews.com for the article on nicko cruises.

As far as I know, 21 May 2020 is an LGBT charter and it will be 100% English language, not bilingual.

How can I discern if a cruise is all German or bilingual? I can't find the language info on the Elbe sailings on the Nicko site - what am I missing?

If it shows up on an English website it is bilingual. If you get to the German website (you might need to set a VPN to do so) you should find cruises that don't show up in English. They would be German only.

Never mind - I found the answer to my previous query. I really like their Elbe itinerary & price is very reasonable.

Have you taken one of their cruises? If so, I would welcome your feedback. TIA

I think Nicko might have changed some things on their website, seeing that they now have an exclusive agent for the UK. My guess...

Here are the dates for the Elbe offered on the UK market (taken from the agent's website):

You can have a brochure sent to you. As I am not allowed to name the agent, look on cruisetradenews.com for ... "partners with Nicko Cruises to"

My settings tell nicko I am in Germany. I find it confusing that they have a German website with a mere translation. It is not helpful for ascertaining what is a German cruise and what is not. A quick look at other routes does not give an English language cruise either. So all those that appear on the English language setting are now bilingual?? Nicko, get this sorted! Cannot help you lot with this, I am afraid.

Questions & answers, how do you make payment onboard.

All payments onboard are usually taken at the end of the cruise and you can choose to either pay via credit card or cash, please note any payments in cash need to be in the local currency.

Are gratuities/tips included in the cruise cost?

The cruise cost does not include gratuities as this is up to your own discretion depending on the level of service you feel you received on the cruise. However as a guideline, if you would like to leave a tip Nicko cruises recommends 10€ - 13€ per passenger per night.

Does every cabin have a view?

All cabins onboard the ships are outside cabins which mean you will either have a cabin with a window or porthole.

Do you offer multi-berth cabins?

On certain ships, selected twin berth cabins can accommodate up to 3 persons however it is important to note that the third bed is usually a fold-away bed and the cabin is not bigger than usual.

Are the cruise itineraries subject to change?

Like most cruises, Nicko Cruises itineraries are weather-dependent – for example, a long period of rain or drought could have a short-term, detrimental effect on water levels which will affect the itinerary.

Do you provide travel documents?

Travel documents are usually sent via email 14 days prior to the cruise departing. The documents include vouchers for any pre-booked services and in-depth information about the embarkation procedure and any details of excursions.

Is it possible to bring pets onboard?

Due to the space requirements on the ships, it is not possible to bring your pet along with you.

Are transfers included?

Included transfers can vary depending on the cruise you are travelling on, we recommend contacting our team of cruise specialists for further details on the transfer services which may be available to you.

What meals are included on the cruise?

All of the cruises are full board, which means breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. Nicko cruises try to source local produce depending on where you are travelling on the cruise for the meals. For the dining service, breakfast is based on a buffet and lunch and dinner are usually table service.

What is the electricity power in the cabins?

Electricity on board the Nicko Cruises ships is 220v which requires a European Adaptor. You will need an adaptor or converter to use in your cabin as these are not supplied.

Is there a dress code?

Dress aboard and onshore is casual so you can wear what you wish however it is recommended to bring comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing. Although there is no dress code for dinner, Nicko Cruises do request you to dress smartly and for The Captain's Dinner & Gala Dinner a higher level of formality is requested.

Enjoy outstanding cuisine as we serve you in style at your table with multi-course menus at lunchtime and dinner, along with themed buffets to match your travel route.

The right ship for every taste.

From classic maritime to modern and elegant, the size of your river ship depends on the nautical characteristics of the river you will be cruising. As a matter of principle, every vessel in the nicko fleet is maintained to a high standard, but there are slight differences in facilities and atmosphere depending on the cruising area and technical requirements. Either way, you are still afforded the typical nicko cruises experience.

Luxurious cabins and classic style

Whether you anticipate spending most of your time away from your cabin or you want to enjoy a beautiful view and feel the fresh wind on your face, every nicko river cruise ship has a cabin category to suit your taste. The main deck on almost all our ships is the most reasonably priced cabin category, where amenities, size and therefore comfort are mostly the same as those on the upper decks, although the windows cannot be opened and they are often a little smaller. Alternatively our middle and upper-deck cabins have large panoramic windows that can be opened, floor-to-ceiling French balconies, or even your own private balcony. On selected ships, you may also book a suite. Learn more about our ocean and river fleet.

5 reasons why a Nicko European river cruise could be your perfect cruise!

by 2020admin | Jan 27, 2021 | European River Cruising , River Cruising , Small Ship Cruising

nicko cruises rail and fly

At a time of uncertainty for many avid travellers in the UK, we look at five very compelling reasons why a river cruise in Europe may just be the best choice of holiday as the world looks to ease out of lock-down measures and global travel restrictions. And as the first river cruise line back in operation earlier this summer, we think it’s the perfect time to book that river cruise, but don’t just take our word for it…

1). The UK Government says it’s OK

The Foreign Office currently advises against cruise ship travel to UK travelers, meaning that you would not be able to get travel insurance and would be taking a personal risk in going. However, the advice was recently updated to specify that cruise ship travel referred to “sea-going” ships, meaning the green light was effectively given for river cruising in Europe. This has naturally been very welcome news for the team at Nicko Cruises, being the first river cruise line back in operation earlier this summer. You can read an interview with one of our first returning passengers on the World of Cruising website here:  Nicko Cruises: An Interview With One Of The First Passengers Back On Board Post-Lockdown

nicko cruises rail and fly

2). You don’t need to fly

For some travellers, the thought of flying at this time is daunting. However, Nicko offers a range of options to join our river cruises in Europe by rail without the need to step foot in an airport. No fly cruising was a popular option for many before travel restrictions were imposed but it now offers a fantastic opportunity for river cruising if you really are keen to avoid flying. Our No fly river cruises and packages are listed on our cruise page.

3). Regarded as Low Risk Travel

One of the reasons the FCO relaxed it’s advice on river cruising is that they are generally seen as being low risk in travel terms. River cruises often have shorter itineraries (the majority of cruises Nicko offer are around 7-nights in duration). They also tend to operate within just one or two countries per cruise and also have far fewer passengers on board than a traditional ocean ship. Another reason river cruising is seen as lower risk is that the ships always remain very close to land, should any problems arise. In fact you are guaranteed to have a glorious land view on everyday of your river cruise.

nicko cruises rail and fly

Land is never far away on a European River Cruise

4). Health & Hygiene

River & ocean cruising have always had meticulous hygienic standards and protocols onboard. However, with Covid-19, these processes are now even more rigorous and effective. These include temperature checks at embarkations, ships operating at 70-80% of normal guest capacity, antibody testing and many more precautions.

5). It’s AMAZING!

The most important point last. River Cruising in Europe on beautiful modern ships is simply breath-taking. Not only are our cruises amazingly inclusive, but the experience of traversing the great waterways of Europe by river ship is second to none. Whether you’re cruising the Rhine, Moselle, Danube or the Douro, there is simply so much rich culture and scenery to savour and discover. And with Nicko, our ships are really special, each designed just for river cruises, making any cruise with us a comfortable and thrilling way to discover some of the most interesting places and stunning countryside in the world.

A new horizon each day from a home away from home that always travels with you, meaning there’s no unnecessary packing and repacking of your suitcase. Nicko Cruises is proud to offer the very best in all-inclusive European River Cruises at the very best value as standard! What’s not to love?

Nicko Cruises is back in operation and open to guests from the UK who are now permitted to cruise on Europe’s rivers once again.
