Great introduction to Krakow

"From the moment we met up (reassuring I am here text) to the end of the tour Tomasz was full of interesting facts that helped us make sense not only of what we were seeing but Polands place in history…..he gave us great ideas of things to go back to and things to miss and so far he has been spot on! Thanks Thomas’s and Thanks With Locals! "

A wonderful day

"Olena went out of her way to give us good photographic tips. "

Excellent Tour of Schindler's Factory

"Bartek gave an excellent tour of the Krakow Ghetto and Schindler's factory. While it was a three hour tour, Bartek was able to cover an amazing amount of materials explaining the growth of the city, the commercial and social life as well as going into great deal about the fate of the Jews in the area before, during and after the war. Perhaps the most extraordinary piece was the visit to Schindler's factory. The factory has been converted into a museum and is chock full of memorabilia and artifacts starting in the early 30's and going all the way till the end of the way in the later 40's. Without Bartek's help, we definitely would have overlooked the most important pieces of the exhibit. He moved us a long at a solid pace, drawing our attention to the most salient displays. Without that guidance we would have never made it through in an hour and a half. Bartek is soft spoken and thoughtful. He's been conducting tours for several years and brings a weatlh of knowledge to his work. He's intent on answering personal questions and bringing this terribly period of time in Krakow history to life for his visitors. I highly recommend Bartek as a tour guide."

He also gave us plenty of recommendations for other things to do during our stay - food and drink, museums, etc. Tomasz is great!"

Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum Guided Tour

The former concentration camp in Auschwitz Memorial and Museum is one of the most popular attractions for day trips from Krakow. Tourists from all over the world visit Auschwitz in Poland to pay tribute to everyone who died there. The Museum, located in Oświęcim, preserves the memory of every person sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau and reminds us about the dreadful times of World War II and the Holocaust. It represents extremely important history and should be visited by every adult. Even though the tours to Auschwitz can be emotional and difficult, it is a must during your stay in Krakow.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in Poland

Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is a museum on the site of former concentration and extermination camp in Oświęcim. It consists of two parts – Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau . Both were developed and ran by Nazi during its occupation of Poland during World War II. The museum was created in April 1946 by Tadeusz Wąsowicz and other former Auschwitz-Birkenau prisoners, acting under the direction of Poland’s Ministry of Culture and Art.

The first exhibition in the barracks opened in 1947 . It presented the history of extermination and the conditions in which the prisoners lived. A new exhibition was opened in 1955. With some changes, it is still in use today. After 1960, some of the camp blocks contained the so-called “ national exhibitions ,” created at the initiative of former prisoners of the largest holocaust concentration camp from various countries who are associated in the International Auschwitz Committee. In 1979, the Museum built on the grounds of former concentration camp of Auschwitz became a World Heritage Site. Today, it is visited by around 2 million people from all over the world every year.

Auschwitz Birkenau former german nazi concentration camp

Learn About The History of Auschwitz Concentration Camp

Before the tour begins, it’s very important to read about the Museum and learn more about the history of Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany  in occupied Poland during World War II. At first, it was supposed to be a prison for political criminals from Poland, but soon it turned out that people sent to Auschwitz were mostly civilians of Jewish, Polish and Roma ethnicities.

Construction of the Camp

Construction of the camp began in 1940 , when Auschwitz – the main camp and the administrative quarter of the complex – was built. The first mass transport – of 728 Polish male political prisoners, including Catholic priests and Jews – arrived on 14 June 1940 from Tarnów, Poland. Upon arriving, the prisoners were being registered, given a serial number, tattooed, shaved, disinfected, and given a striped prison uniform. Then they were subjected to excruciating labor and life in horrible conditions .

KL Auschwitz Expansion

In 1941 , it was decided that the KL Auschwitz I needs to be expanded. The same year prisoners of Auschwitz began construction work of Birkenau – additional camp in the town of Brzezinka , about 3 km from Oswiecim. Birkenau consisted consisted mostly of wooden barracks , which were very dangerous to live in, as they didn’t provide much protection from weather conditions (such as intense cold or rain).

That’s why a lot of the prisoners living in Birkenau died out of hypothermia , starvation or exhaustion . It is said that Birkenau held the biggest part of the mass murder apparatus and the majority of prisoners were murdered there.

Life in Auschwitz

Due to many reports of former inmates, we now have a rather broad knowledge about how the life in Auschwitz-Birkenau looked like. We know that the prisoners were divided into categories , based on their nationality , ethnicity , and even sexual orientation or health issues . Each day they woke up at very early hours, used and washed latrines, had a very calories-deficient breakfast and gathered to be counted. No matter the weather, they had to wait for the SS to arrive for the count; how long they stood there depended on the officers’ mood, and whether there had been escapes or other events attracting punishment.

They were often counted and re-counted, after which they walked to their place of work with a cheerful melody of Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz in the background. They were supervised by the kapos and an SS escort. Much of the work took place outdoors at construction sites, gravel pits, and lumber yards. No rest periods were allowed. In the evening the prisoners were counted again – if someone was missing, the others had to remain on site until they were found.

The prisoners were tortured, ridiculed, and humiliated for no reason whatsoever. Even the most benign of misconduct could earn them beating, punishment in Block 11 or even death. They were also living in constant fear of crematoria , which consisted of a dressing room, gas chamber, and a furnace room . The first gassings at Auschwitz took place in early September 1941, when around 850 inmates – Soviet prisoners of war and sick Polish inmates—were killed with Zyklon B in the basement of Auschwitz I. In the years to follow, the use of crematoria became even more prevalent, with new gas chambers being constructed and many prisoners sent there without ever stepping foot inside the barracks or other living complexes of Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

The Aftermath of Auschwitz-Birkenau Camp

Today, Auschwitz-Birkenau is known as the biggest Nazi German concentration camp . It’s one of the best-recognized symbols of Holocaust and World War II genocide. Its prisoners were living in terrible sanitary conditions and forced to endure unbelievably hard labor. They were often beaten, humiliated, and treated with no respect for human rights whatsoever. Many died out of exhaustion, starvation, or by suicide. Others were murdered in gas chambers or during medical experiments . The exact number of Auschwitz-Birkenau victims is not known. The historians argue it must have been between 1 to even 3 million people from all over the world (mostly Jews, Ethnic Poles, and Roma).

Visit to Auschwitz – What Can You Expect?

All tours provided by Krakow Direct are with an authorized Auschwitz-Birkenau Guide. You begin your tour with a short introduction about the camp history and the most important rules in force at the museum grounds. A visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau is never an easy experience. The former largest Nazi concentration camp holds many artifacts and displays showing the realities of prisoners’ every-day lives. Among the camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau holdings are personal belongings of the prisoners, such as thousands of pairs of shoes, 3,800 luggage, over 12,000 kitchen utensils, 470 prostheses and orthoses, 397 striped camp clothing, many works of art, and even clumps of hair.

Auschwitz Tour from Krakow

During the Auschwitz tour with KrakowDirect you will visit Auschwitz I Camp and Auschwitz II-Birkenau – two main Nazi concentration camp sites. The whole complex covers an area of nearly 200 ha , and most of the tour of Auschwitz is outdoor. The tour includes seeing grounds of both former camps, as it is crucial to fully comprehend the atrocities that took place there. The first important object you’ll see is the infamous inscription on the entrance gate to the concentration camp, which says “ Arbeit macht frei ” (Work makes you free). This ironic slogan, created by Nazis, begins the Auschwitz Birkenau memorial tour.

Auschwitz entrance gate arbeit macht frei

In the Auschwitz site, you’ll also see prisoners’ barracks, places of work, and original blocks where they were received punishment. You’ll see railroad tracks that often transported people straight to gas chambers and crematoria used for mass extermination. At the end of the war, the Nazi Germans tried to destroy them by blasting, which is why all that’s left from them are rows of chimneys covering a large surface of the concentration camp.

Auschwitz tours with transfers from Krakow are extremely popular, but keep in mind that they are not a tourist attraction. In fact, they are an opportunity to learn a live history lesson in a place of deep reverence. Visitors need to take under consideration that while many visit Auschwitz for purely historical reasons, some people go there to see the place that took the lives of their relatives, since approximately one in six Jews who died in the Holocaust, died in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz tour with KrakowDirect guarantees high-quality service and a hundred per cent satisfaction. We are an experienced company that enjoys recognition as the best in Krakow. Gov. Newsom latest to tour the Siskiyou site where crews are tearing down four huge dams

local tours krakow

With less than four months left before all four dams on the Klamath River are removed, California Gov. Gavin Newsom visited Siskiyou County on Wednesday to check on the progress of what is being called the nation's largest-ever dam removal project.

Newsom visited what is left of Iron Gate Dam and the former locations of Copco Dams No. 1 and No. 2. He was joined by top state officials from the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the California Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Resources Agency.

Members of the Shasta Indian Nation tribe, which once had villages on the river where the dams were located, also joined in the tour with the governor.

"It's been on our radar from day one. And so, here we are five years later and now we're just five or six months away from this thing coming out," Newsom said in an interview with the Record Searchlight.

Below the overlook at Iron Gate Dam site, heavy equipment moved back and forth, digging up and hauling away the soil and rock that composed the earthen dam.

Soil used to build the dam was taken from a nearby hill when Iron Gate was built in the early 1960s. The dirt and rocks from the dam were being excavated from the dam and returned to the hill where it came from, according to Daniel Petersen, project manager for Kiewit Corp., the contractor in charge of the deconstruction.

At Copco Dam No. 2, there was little evidence remaining that a diversion dam once existed at the location.

There were the remnants of a retaining wall, high on the walls of the river canyon, anti-erosion material and riprap rocks lining another portion of the river where the 33-foot-tall Copco Dam once stood. A tunnel that diverted water from the river was no longer visible.

The governor last visited the river in December 2022, when the $500 million dam removal project was getting underway. Half the money used to pay for the project comes from a bond being repaid by the state and the other half is being paid for from a surcharge on ratepayers that purchase utilities from PacifiCorps.

The Klamath River Renewal Corporation, which is overseeing the project, hopes to have all four dams removed from the river by the end of September, said Mark Bransom, CEO of the corporation.

Newsom said he was happy to see the project finishing up.

"That's a powerful thing at a time when we're so consumed situationally with power, dominance and aggression in our personalized politics. This is a sustainable framework that I think just sort of softens the edges a little bit for everyone," he said.

There has been some edgy opposition to removing the dams, though.

The Iron Gate Dam, Copco Dams No. 1 and No. 2 and the J.C. Boyle Dam are being removed to improve conditions on the river for spawning salmon and steelhead.

During the hot summers, harmful algae blooms in the reservoirs and in the river were not uncommon. And fish in the river were prone to infections from parasites in the water when the river level ran warm, low and slow during the hot summers, said Ren Brownell, a spokeswoman for the renewal corporation.

Native American tribes in the area — such as the Karuk, Yurok and Shasta — supported the dam removal, as the river and the fishery are an integral part of their culture.

Bransom said the river below the Copco No. 2 Dam was nearly drained, as the dam was used to divert water from the river for generating hydroelectric power.

Brownell said that in recent years the dams produced very little power and none of it was used by Siskiyou County residents.

"It's outlived its usefulness, in terms of its economic benefits. And now we're restoring it, I think, in a way where Mother Nature approves," Newsom said.

Note to readers: If you enjoy the work we do here at the Redding Record Searchlight, please consider subscribing yourself or giving the gift of a subscription to someone you know.

Even though the dam removal was seen as a boon to the salmon and steelhead fishery, there was widespread opposition to the project by Siskiyou County officials and residents.

"They're the ones directly impacted. I respect that. And I think what I'm hearing today — and another reason it's good to come in and hear firsthand and check in — is I think they've been hurt and they've been listened to. It doesn't mean that everybody's happy and gets everything they want. But the fact is, it's an iterative process. It's a two-way conversation, not a one-way conversation," Newsom said.

There have been reports of some wildlife incidents on the river since the dam removal project started, including reports of wildlife becoming stuck in the mud after the dams were breached and the reservoirs were drawn down.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife released 830,000 hatchery-raised salmon into the river in February, but a large number of them were killed by what officials called "gas bubble disease" when the fish passed through a tunnel at the base of Iron Gate Dam.

The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors, which has long opposed the dam removal, passed a resolution in March declaring a local emergency and warning of the dangers in the river due to alleged toxic chemicals in the water from breaching the dams.

The resolution warns the public not to come in contact with the water and says the "increased turbidity and sediment transport occurring during the drawdown phase of the project has resulted in public and environmental health concerns related to heavy metals and other undesirable water quality constituents."

The county has also asked the state to do monthly water quality testing in the river and of residential groundwater wells in the area around the river.

Brownell said she disagreed with the interpretation of the test results the county had done, as the county obtained results from water quality testing in the river in January when turbidity was highest. But even then, water in the river was safe to come in contact with.

She also said drinking water in the river was not an issue because only the California Department of Transportation was taking water from the river for drinking, and the agency suspended pumping before the dams were removed.

Caltrans has resumed taking drinking water from the river, but treats it before it is available for people to drink, she said. All surface water from any stream or river used for drinking must be treated to make it safe and meet state and federal standards, she said.

Many of the chemicals ― including arsenic and other heavy metals ― cited by the county occur naturally in the river, she said.

Jacqueline Nushi, who lives along the Klamath River just south of the Iron Gate Dam site, said there was intense opposition to the project, but with the dam removal nearly complete, resistance seems to be dying down.

"I just feel like we all need to just take a deep breath, let nature return the way it was and move forward with what we have," she said.

Nushi said she could understand why residents who lived along the shores of the reservoirs would be upset to lose the lake access and views.

Since the reservoirs were drained, "there's nothing. It's just dirt all the way down. It actually reminds me a little bit of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River, but not as great," Nushi said.

She said the river seems murkier now that the dams have been removed and silt washes downstream, but birds, otter and other wildlife also are returning to the river.

Bransom said it will take about two years for the silt that built up behind the dams to continue to dilute and wash downstream. In the meantime, the renewal corporation also plans to replant trees and other vegetation along the riverbank to restore the stream to how it looked before the dams were built.

"In my humble opinion, when this is done. I can't conceive that it doesn't drive property values anywhere but up, ultimately," Newsom said.

Rapper Trippie Redd gives tour of blacked out home; drops sneak peek of new song exclusively on Local 10

Janine Stanwood , Anchor/Reporter

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – American rapper, singer and songwriter Trippie Redd is working on a new hit, and dropping a sneak peek exclusively on Local 10.

The upcoming single is called “Bando Kid,” and you can listen to a preview of the song below:

Redd, whose real name is Michael Lamar White, lives in the middle of horse farms and supersized homes in Southwest Ranches.

But his nearly 19,000-square-foot house is unlike the others: the entire façade, from the roof to the driveway, is completely blacked out.

“It was actually my mom’s idea, but it made so much sense because it’s our favorite color. We love black,” he said.

At 24, Redd’s music has already gone multi-platinum and diamond. He’s collaborated with other big names like Travis Scott, Future, and Machine Gun Kelly. For him, space to create and think was a priority when choosing a home.

“I need a lot of space for my creativity. I can’t function in a small area,” Redd said. “So I like to have my own personal space - privacy.”

Two years ago, the rapper and singer purchased the home for $7.5 million before its owner was planning to foreclose on it.

At the time, it was a typical Mediterranean-style house with a white façade.

Redd decided to cover everything black. It took crews nearly three coats of paint.

He knows the house is sometimes a topic of conversation among his neighbors.

“I like it. It’s food for thought. You can say what you want to say,” he said.

The Ohio-born musical artist is also learning to deal with the perils of South Florida living, like the oppressive heat, red ants and flocks of birds - which seem to be drawn to the black paint.

“The birds just go crazy over the black - they just leave it (with) so much poop!” he laughed.

Redd said he is now perfecting the interior, including his recording studio.

“I’m just growing up and learning; keeping my wealth high,” he said. “And I feel like every building I purchase I’m going to paint it black.”

Detroiters get 1st look inside revived Michigan Central Station during tours

Detroiters on Friday get their first look inside revived Michigan Central Station after Thursday's blowout opening night concert .

Visitors, who had to sign up in advance for tours for the Detroit train station, will encounter a range of activities and exhibits honoring the station's history and six-year restoration. Tours continue daily through June 16, but they are fully booked. The station will be open for self-guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays through August.

The first floor of the station, by then with some shops and other features expected to be built out, is scheduled to be open to the public in September.

Follow along here to experience Detroiters' first steps inside the renovated station.

Michigan Central Station tours: How to visit Ford's renovated train depot

3:40 p.m.: A job loaded with smiles

John Martin is a new Michigan Central ambassador, after making a career out of cable TV advertising and spending a couple of more years working part-time gigs. Friday was just his second day of work after he snagged the job just in time for the station’s reopening.

Martin grew up in Lincoln Park and later worked in downtown Detroit, so he spent most of his life watching the city up close.

“Being that I worked down here, I’ve always been interested about what’s going on in the city, and that never left me even after I found another job,” he said.

He toured Michigan Central’s open house back in 2018 after it was acquired by Ford and has since been stunned by Detroit’s numerous and gorgeous renovations.

After he stopped working one of his part-time jobs earlier this year and almost simultaneously came across the Michigan Central ambassador position, he knew he could take the job and have a good time with it.

Martin stands at the doors of the Grand Hall and greets people as they enter with smiles widening and eyes lighting up at their first sight of the hall.

“One of my jobs that I didn’t do this year after working it for 12 years was at a golf course … You get a lot of interaction with folks. You’re not always putting out fires, but there always seems to be one on your shift. So, I thought, jeez, I could come in here and how many fires could I have? People are coming in here awestruck, they’re not complaining,” he said.

3 p.m.: Streets around train station returning to normal

By Friday afternoon, Michigan Avenue opened to vehicles after being closed for Thursday's opening festivities, and there was no traffic congestion even as thousands of people descended on the train station for the first day of public tours.

As workers outside continued to dismantle the concert stage, about 1,800 visitors walked through the train station as of 3 p.m., Michigan Central spokesperson Dan Austin said.

A total of 5,000 visitors were expected Friday, with tours ending at 10 p.m., he said.

1:55 p.m.: Details make the difference

Christina Roki of Sterling Heights, and Grant Sloan of West Bloomfield, two automotive content creators who were invited to opening day by Ford, said they were brought to tears by the stories preserved inside Michigan Central Station.

“What we appreciate about it most is how much detail Ford cared to preserve to show the story. They kept part of the graffiti on the walls, they preserved a lot of the tickets they found … Even the brick, all the chisels we see on the brick, they didn’t try to make fine cut lines, they still want to show all the history that this building has,” said Roki.

As their tour guide led from room to room in the building, they remained at a loss for words.

“The inside was literally mind-blowing. I feel like I was walking in on such a big piece of history that’s been preserved for so long, so it’s crazy to think that this is something they’ve been working on in the past few years,” said Roki.

But for the two metro Detroiters, one of the most significant parts was just to see how Michigan Central had been given new life, narrowly dodging demolition. Sloan remembered times passing by the station with his friends just before the renovation began to see the graffiti and decay; now, to see that part of modern history meshed with its historical past, he said to step inside the new shiny floors was an awesome experience.

“Any Detroiter will agree that this building was such an eyesore for such a long time. Growing up in Detroit and knowing its history but never seeing it operational… But now seeing it up in running, it’s really touching to see that Ford took on such a large project,” said Sloan. “It’s early but I think it’s safe to say that the investment already paid off.”

— Kylie Martin

1:45 p.m.: Returning soon

Southwest Detroit resident Jennifer Serra set an alarm in hopes of scoring tickets to see the train station on its first day of public tours.

“There's just not enough wonderful words to describe it,” Serra, 45, said after securing tickets and touring the station Friday.

The only problem? She had somewhere else to be this afternoon and wanted to spend more time in the station. She’s already made plans to come back for another tour in a few days.

“I feel like it's like a symbolic representation of what goes on in our city,” she said of Michigan Central Station. “I feel like there's just these landmarks in certain cities … that just really kind of embody the overall history of what's going on. I feel like this helps us bring a little bit of closure to some tough times and show renewal.”

— Adrienne Roberts

1 p.m.: 'Another crown jewel'

Tom Schultz and his wife, Sylvia Ross-Schultz, are both born and raised Detroiters, but more than that, they’re Detroit-lovers.

“We’re so glad to see it getting so much better, and it’s beautiful … It’s just in my heart, it’s been the neatest thing,” said Ross-Schultz. “It’s another crown jewel in the renovation of Detroit.”

“I made the statement, and I was wrong, that (the comeback) would never happen in my lifetime,” said Schultz. “The rebirth is off the charts.”

Remembering the good old days of Michigan Central Station in the 1970s, the couple knew they had to tour the station on opening day, and so did Ross-Schultz’s cousin and her husband, Renee and Tom Toft. With ancestors who worked in the building, the families are woven into the fabric of Michigan Central, as well as the city of Detroit.

Additionally, the Tofts took what they called the “falling apart” tour of the station back when Ford purchased it in 2018.

Now, the four stood waiting for their tour in awe at the renovated front of the building.

“Instead of just knocking it down, to bring it back to this grandeur is absolutely fantastic,” said Ross-Schultz.

“You see the work they did out here, they recreated everything the right way,” said Tom Toft. “It’s spectacular. We haven’t even gone inside yet but I know its going to be spectacular.”

12:40 p.m.: Eager to return

Donny Wilson and his brother Paul Wilson had never been inside the train station until Friday morning, but they’re all ready to come back.

Donny Wilson, 41, an influencer who lives in Oak Park, wants to bring his family and friends to the station to see it.

“I can't wait until all this stuff is actually in there …the shops, hotel …” Donny Wilson said after touring the station.

Paul Wilson, 42, a Detroit resident, said he’s just thought of the station as a ruin his whole life — until now. “It’s so cool how they refurbished everything and still kept a whole lot of the building intact,” Paul Wilson said.

Noon: 'Berliners are obsessed with Detroit'

NPR reporter Bobby Allyn, 35, walked quickly toward Michigan Central Station as he prepared to interview President Joe Biden’s director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Arati Prabhakar, at Newlab on Friday. He said he was super excited to be in Detroit, having heard so much about the city when he lived in Berlin.

“Berliners are obsessed with Detroit because of techno music,” Allyn said. “It’s the birthplace of techno. Look up Jeff Mills of Detroit and techno. You’ll see. When you go to Club Berghain in Berlin, it’s impossible to get in but if you wear a hat that says, ‘Detroit,’ they let you in.”

Allyn, a technology correspondent , reports on startups, artificial intelligence, privacy issues and tech litigation. While he was directed to the building next door to Michigan Central Station, the whole site is part of the mobility hub led by Ford Motor Co. Allyn said he couldn’t wait to see the inside of the restored train depot after the interview.

11:50 a.m.: Memories rekindled outside Michigan Central

Bob Bilkie, 63, and Shari Bilkie, 62, of Northville walked the side streets surrounding Michigan Central Station as they waited for the noon public tours to begin. They parked at 10 a.m. and took in the sights of the Corktown neighborhood on the cool, cloudy day.

As they approached their 41st wedding anniversary on Monday, they talked about dates at Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit, ordering their lemon meringue pie and Faygo Red Pop. That’s pretty much all Bob Bilkie could afford as an intern at Detroit Edison. At lunch, he ordered coney dogs with lots of onions and mustard because that’s what he could afford. Now Bob is an investment adviser and Shari is a compliance officer for a financial firm.

Being in Detroit together during this special time also celebrates memories of their families. Her grandfather went to Cass Tech High School and owned Ward’s Bar in Dearborn. They went to the old Tiger Stadium around the corner as a family. His father worked at American Motors as a fabricator, and his grandfather worked for the railroad.

“He probably worked here,” Bob said, glancing up at the 18-story Beaux Arts-style building from the corner of Wabash and Marantette.

Shari said smiling, “It is so cool, the fact that they took something decrepit, falling apart, an eyesore and turned it into something absolutely beautiful.”

11:35 a.m.: The morning after and a new dawn

On a much noticeably cooler and windier morning compared with Thursday, Corktown appeared to be just waking up after last night’s celebration.

With much of Michigan Avenue still closed off to vehicles Friday morning, the few businesses that were open had just a couple of customers.

The train station, however, was bustling with activity, albeit a different kind of energy compared with Thursday night, as workers dismantled the concert stage that the night before featured acts including massive music concern in Roosevelt Park a night earlier that featured Diana Ross, Eminem, Jack White and Big Sean.

— Adrienne Roberts

11:25 a.m.: Michigan Central prepares for company

The sounds of Motown and techno music filled the halls of Michigan Central Station, spilling from speakers in a gallery plastered with vintage posters less than an hour before the doors officially opened to visitors on Friday.

Inside the station, hundreds of workers dashed about, putting final touches on exhibits scheduled to attract 60,000 people over 10 days.

A woman from Chicago leading a group of eight South Korean government officials, walking through the renovated station half an hour before the official open, explained that the visitors oversee small- and medium-sized businesses and they’re looking at the 30-acre innovation zone created by Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford Motor Co.
