The Power of URL Schemes in iOS

In the vast ecosystem of iOS , there exist certain “shortcuts” known as URL schemes which allow for direct interaction with system and third-party apps. While most iOS users might be unfamiliar with them, understanding URL schemes can elevate the iOS experience, allowing for more direct interactions and automations.

Table of contents

What are URL Schemes?

URL schemes provide a method to launch an app from another app, a website, or even interact dicely with the iOS system itself. They’re essentially URLs that, instead of pointing to a website, instruct the system to perform specific tasks or open specific apps.

1. Making Direct Calls with tel://

One of the most straightforward URL schemes is tel:// . This scheme can directly initiate a phone call. By entering something like tel://1234567890 in Safari, the Phone app would launch and initiate a call to the number “1234567890”.

This can be especially useful in certain automation scenarios, like QR codes for direct calls or web pages designed to initiate a customer support call with a single tap.

2. SMS Shortcuts with sms://

Similar to the tel:// scheme, sms:// will open up the Messages app ready to send a text to a specific number. So, sms://1234567890 would launch a new message to that number. This can be handy for businesses or events that want to provide a direct line to SMS-based communication or support.

3. The Enigmatic diags://

While tel:// and sms:// are quite public and known, diags:// is more mysterious. As of the last known updates, it’s not a publicly recognized scheme in iOS’s official documentation. It might be related to internal or proprietary tools used by Apple or certain app developers for diagnostics. Whenever encountering unfamiliar URL schemes, especially those potentially impacting system data or behavior, always proceed with caution.

Benefits of Using URL Schemes

Automation : For power users and developers, URL schemes can be combined with automation tools on iOS, like Shortcuts, to create sequences of actions that can be triggered with a tap.

Ease of Access : Businesses can streamline user actions. For instance, a restaurant’s contact page can have a “Call Now” button utilizing the tel:// scheme to initiate direct calls.

Custom Integrations : Third-party apps can also define their own URL schemes, allowing for unique inter-app interactions and deep linking.

Facetime with facetime: and facetime-audio:

The facetime: scheme lets you initiate a FaceTime video call directly. For instance, typing facetime://[email protected] would open FaceTime and start a video call with the given email address. Similarly, facetime-audio: can be used to start a FaceTime audio call.

Accessing Mail Directly with mailto:

mailto: isn’t exclusive to iOS; it’s a widely recognized scheme across platforms. By entering something like mailto:[email protected]?subject=Hello in a browser or hyperlink, the Mail app will open, ready to compose a message to the provided email address with a pre-filled subject line.

Navigating with http://maps.apple.com/

Apple Maps can be launched using this URL scheme. For example, http://maps.apple.com/?q=Central+Park will open Apple Maps and search for Central Park.

Music Shortcuts with music://

The music:// scheme can open the Music app. You can use it to search for songs or artists, such as music://search?term=beatles , which will search for “The Beatles” in the Music app.

App Store with itms-apps://

By using itms-apps:// , you can direct someone straight into the App Store. You can even point them directly to an app’s page by appending its identifier, for instance, itms-apps://itunes.apple.com/app/id[APP_ID] .

Watching Content with videos://

The videos:// scheme opens the Videos app. It’s handy for accessing purchased or local video content.

Accessing Calendar with calshow://

By using calshow:// , users can be directed straight to the Calendar app. For instance, calshow:602287104 will open the Calendar app and jump to a specific date based on the timestamp provided.

System Preferences with App-Prefs://

This scheme can take users directly to specific sections of the Settings app, though its use is unofficial and can change between iOS versions.

Jumping into YouTube with youtube://

If the YouTube app is installed, youtube:// followed by certain parameters can open the app and search or play videos. For instance, youtube://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ would directly open a particular video in the YouTube app.

Wrapping Up

While URL schemes provide an advanced layer of interaction on iOS, they’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible when diving deep into the system’s capabilities. Always remember to use these tricks responsibly, ensuring that user privacy and security are not compromised.

Whether you’re an iOS power user looking to streamline your daily tasks or a curious enthusiast eager to uncover hidden iOS gems, understanding and harnessing the power of URL schemes can open a new realm of possibilities.

Run a shortcut using a URL scheme on iPhone or iPad

The Shortcuts URL scheme supports running a shortcut that’s saved in your shortcuts collection. This functionality may be useful in automation systems that extend beyond Shortcuts itself, so that other apps can run a shortcut in your collection. Or you could use the Shortcuts URL scheme in a task manager for running a shortcut as one step in a project. URL schemes can be used anywhere a URL can be used—your own app, in a web browser, or in the command line.

Open a URL with the following structure: shortcuts://run-shortcut?name=[name]&input=[input]&text=[text]

Use the following parameters in the URL:

name: The name of the shortcut to run.

input (optional): The initial input into the shortcut. There are two input options: a text string or the word clipboard . When the input value is a text string, that text is used. When the input value is clipboard , the contents of the Clipboard are used.

text: If input is set to text , then value of the text parameter is passed as input to the shortcut. If input is set to clipboard , then this parameter is ignored.

By using a text string, you can provide your own URL-encoded text as input to the shortcut. For example, a URL that uses the text “ goetta is great ” as input to a shortcut named Lookup Goetta would look like this:

shortcuts://run-shortcut?name=Lookup%20Goetta&input=text&text=goetta%20is%20great

A URL to transfer the most recently copied text into a shortcut called Add to Notes would look like this:

shortcuts://run-shortcut?name=Add20%to20%Notes&input=clipboard

Tip: If you’d like to run one shortcut from another shortcut, use the Run Shortcut action instead of a URL scheme. You should only run shortcuts with a URL if you’re integrating from another app outside of Shortcuts.

How To : iOS 17.2 Includes 50 New URL Schemes You Can Use in Shortcuts on Your iPhone

iOS 17.2 Includes 50 New URL Schemes You Can Use in Shortcuts on Your iPhone

The iOS 17.2 update for iPhone is a big one. Aside from huge new features like the Journal app, Contact Key Verification for iMessage, and a revamped TV app, there are 50 new URL schemes you can use in your self-created shortcuts.

If you're unfamiliar, schemes are names assigned to apps in a format that resembles the protocol portion of URLs, such as https:// or ftp://. So, a scheme for the Camera app on your iPhone would look like camera://. The basic scheme opens up the app in question, and you can turn them into links or deep links with paths, parameters, fragments, and other components added that point to something specific in the app.

URL schemes like these are helpful in custom-made shortcuts in the Shortcuts app when the app itself doesn't have any shortcut actions available by default or as Siri Shortcuts. They also make it possible for Apple to include quick links in the Settings app when you perform searches, so there are at least 25 new items you may come across during a Settings search.

So, what are the new URL schemes available on iOS 17.2?

First, there are schemes for the new Journal app and Journal's settings:

And two for the new Contact Key Verification for iMessage setting:

Beyond that, the Accessibility settings have new URL schemes that work on iOS 17.2 and later only, including:

There are also new URL schemes added for Accessibility and other settings that work on other iOS versions, not just iOS 17.2, including:

There are likely more URL schemes hiding within iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2, and we'll update this guide when we find them.

Assume the user is on a mobile device iOS Safari (Or other browser), but you want a link to open into any other specific mobile browser app like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, Arc... How do you do that?

In-App browsers

Assume the users is on an in-app webview or any other browser, but an API is not support in-app browser, so you need to link the user to Safari, how do you achieve that?

I couln't find a URL Scheme for Safari, tried safari://url but it didn't work, it will be handled by Safari.

I filled a bug on Safari webkit about this

I tried x-web-search but it didn't work

People have mentioned com-apple-mobilesafari-tab:https://google.com at redit

Demo and resources

Codepen Demo , Inter App Communication , Apple URL Schemes , I think registerProtocolHandler is somewhat related.. I think this bug is also somewhat related, cause there's developers trying to figure out if a URL Scheme is available in the platform, check out this Stackoverflow question

For Android I found intent Doc , this blog post is insightful, other insightful read was this starckoverflow question "Firefox for Android does not launch app when link is clicked" and URL "Scheme: How can I create a link, which will open a document in the Google Drive app"

Should we work on a standard way to share information between web apps to installed application and installed application to web apps and web apps to web apps, on desktop, tablets and smartphone?

There's basic necessities when developing a rich web app.

What are the apps the user can share this piece of information?

Whatsapp has the whatsapp:// URL Scheme, but there's no way to check if the given URL Scheme is available in the platform

If the user clicks in share, the browser/platform should give a list of applications/web apps the user can share the given information, it could be a URL, String, File Buffer would be great, for example.. The user apply a custom filter to an image on a web app... So the user wants to share it on Instagram.

Is a specfic URL Scheme available?

There's no standard way to check if a URL Scheme is available

How can I offer my web app the oportunite to the user share the information?

Android has a popup where the user choose where he wants to share the information, a URL or String.. or a image base64 enconded.. So... If my web site provide a way to share images, strings and links.. How can I tell the device/browser my web app can share this kind of information?

I found out the best reading these days is this blog post about a failed Web API called Web Indents , follow all the links

Thank you for reading, I appreciate your help.

Hey, I am interesting in browser scheme too. Your article is helpful. I am following this problem. Is there any conclusion about Safari scheme?

If we click this link x-web-search://?keyword in other browser that will open Safari and search the keyword you give. However I hope to open a link in Safari instead of just searching.

Sorry, something went wrong.

filecage commented Mar 8, 2023

There won't ever be a way to check whether a URI scheme is supported or not; it is a privacy concern, because third party apps could use this information to build fingerprints or just to see what applications are installed on a device (and maybe even detect vulnerable setups).

@wb-towa

wb-towa commented Mar 22, 2023

in my iOS bookmarking app, I've simply added the url schemes for a reasonable set of popular browsers (and Jayson). It's less than ideal and it means if someone changes their default there is no way to target Safari.

At worst can't they offer a way for an app to offer itself as a browser and it gets put into a list and the user can grant permission to read that list? It would be nice to be able to target Safari specifically. I've had users that would like that rather than having Safari as their default and selecting the other browser the majority of the time.

felquis commented Apr 1, 2023

@wb-towa @filecage @PigCharid just updated with a mention to com-apple-mobilesafari-tab:https://google.com , not sure if it's com-apple-mobilesafari-tab://https://google.com or com-apple-mobilesafari-tab:https://google.com , haven't tested it yet. Let me know if that works for you.

wb-towa commented Apr 2, 2023

Thanks @felquis On iOS 16.4, it brings up the dialog asking if I want to open it in Safari but when it's in Safari it fails saying it's an invalid address.

I've tried it without the https:// as well.

It might be they closed off access to this or changed it. When I have more free time I'll see if I can get it to work.
