Lord of the Rings filming location Matamata, New Zealand.

Departing Tauranga; we first cross the harbour bridge, which offers great views of The Mount, 232m high and marking the entrance to the harbour of Tauranga.

We then climb up to over 1000 feet to cross the Kaimai Mountain Range , which divides the Bay of Plenty coastal region from the Waikato district, the main dairy farming area of New Zealand.

We soon arrive at  Hobbiton ; the movie set location for Lord of The Rings and associated films, near the town of  Matamata . Enjoy an informative 2 hour tour around the movie set location hearing about all which goes on behind the scenes of making such a successful movie. Nestled deep in the rolling hills of the Waikato , this location was chosen for its unblemished landscape.

You’ll be able to walk through a fully furnished hobbit hole and through a tunnel to another then out.

You will get to stand under the party tree, walk past the numerous holes within the Shire, and imagine yourself among the characters. Bilbo Baggins was no typical hobbit , he did not want adventure , but you will have to come and see why he was so reluctant to leave the comfort of The Shire .  At the conclusion of your journey you get a special treat in the Green Dragon Inn where you will receive a local shire ale, cider or ginger beer.

On your return journey to the port we will call in at McLaren Falls & Park, which abounds with a diverse range of tree species & bird-life. You now have the opportunity to walk in our native bush to a beautiful waterfall . It’s in the park you will have opportunity to dress up and become your favorite Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit character. This includes Gandalf, cloak, hat, staff and swords.  Maybe Bilbo and the Sting sword appeal to you more than Gandalf and for the ladies Eowyn and her sword.

Now it’s homeward we travel into Tauranga City , and if time permits we will make a quick stop for you to view the local bees and taste New Zealand Manuka honey or try one of their d elicious ice-creams before we head back along the inner harbor past the local fishing boats, over the Harbor bridge along the port back to your ship with plenty of time to spare to enjoy the beach before sailing time.

NB: Your tour guide reserves the right to alter the tour time and itinerary  if deemed neccessary, to fit with your ships arrival and sailing time.

OMG it was stinking amazing to see Hobbiton, and really enjoyed the geysers and Maori show. We loved how the guide gave us tid bits for what to do and look for. She was great.

The trip to hobbiton was amazing. Even if you have not seen the movies you should go. Just a magical place. Te Puia is such an interesting place. Glad we managed to squeeze both in. Kudos to Chris our guide. Very informative and managed to get the full trip in and back to the ship on time. I would highly recommend this trip. A full day but well worth it,

Hobbit land portion was great. Having spoken to someone who did a Maorii experience tour with someone else, we missed allot at Rotarua. Guess there is only so much you can do in a day. Guide was excellent.

Everything went like clockwork! Excellent driver, terry, who was also an excellent guide. Highlight of my trip to New Zealand

Hobbiton Day Tour

hobbiton and rotorua tour from tauranga

Our Hobbiton day tour is really popular with Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans, as well as anyone who wants to take in the beautiful New Zealand countryside. Some of the highlights of this tour are:

Hobbiton Movie Set

  • Lunch at Matamata town or at the Shires Rest
  • Scenic views over New Zealand Countryside
  • Stroll through the McLarens falls park land and bush

Visit Hobbiton – A fantastic day in ‘Middle Earth’ with Custom Day Tours

In recent years our Hobbiton Movie Set guided tour has become increasingly popular as a cruise ship excursion from the Port of Tauranga. Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours is definitely a fun filled day tour in the Bay of Plenty, providing a rare chance to see a world famous film set and to gain a real insight into New Zealand rural life. Make sure you experience Middle-Earth during your day in the Bay of Plenty.

The Hobbiton Day Tour Itinerary

Our Hobbiton guided day tour starts from the Port of Tauranga, where we will collect you in our luxury vehicles. If you are travelling around New Zealand independently we can arrange another pick up point suitable for you.

Mount Maunganui

Our first stop is often Mount Maunganui Main Beach where you will have the chance to take photos of this beautiful beach in the morning sun. We then travel down the Pacific Coast road on route to Middle Earth.

Stunning New Zealand Scenery

As we head to the Hobbiton Movie Set we cross over the Kaimai Ranges which boast panoramic views across the Provence of Waikato. This is one of our favorite routes as we pass through breath-taking farm land that typifies New Zealand rural life. You will get a real taste for the Bay of Plenty during this drive and we are happy to answer any of your questions on the way. As we move towards Hobbiton we will offer you full commentary on the brief history of New Zealand, as well as a few interesting facts about our agriculture, horticulture and forestry industries. We always build up a really friendly repartee as we travel through the Bay of Plenty together.

Upon arrival at Hobbiton you will board the Middle Earth bus for a two hour fascinating guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set and farm. Many of our guests have now seen the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as well as the Hobbit movie trilogies.

The Hobbiton guided tour starts with a drive through the picturesque 1250 acre sheep farm with more stunning views across the Kamai Ranges. Your guide will escort you through the ten acre site, telling you fascinating details of how the Hobbit set was created as you go.

The Green Dragon Inn offers a complimentary drink in Hobbit style at the end of your tour.

McLaren Falls

On our return journey we visit McLaren Falls where we take a short walk to the beautiful waterfalls – a real New Zealand treat to top off your cruise ship excursion with us in the Bay of Plenty. McLaren Falls consists of 170 hectares of lake land park set amongst a beautiful botanical collection of trees.

Back to Tauranga

To end our cruise ship day tour to Hobbiton we like to drive with you through down-town Tauranga, giving you the chance to see the charming city with all of its cafes and water-front bars. You will quickly sense the laid back Kiwi life style that we love.

We return you to your ship in the Port of Tauranga with plenty of time to look around Mount Maunganui. Some of our customers choose to combine the guided Hobbiton tour with an excursion to Rotorua’s Geothermal Wonderland, Te Puia. This option will be a full day excursion and gives you a great mixture of sites around the Bay of Plenty.

Press Release – New Zealand Nurses Organisation

New Zealand Nurses Organisation Tōpūtanga Tapuhi Kaitiaki o Aotearoa (NZNO) will hit the road for 11 days this month to raise awareness of the health crisis facing Aotearoa New Zealand.

NZNO President Anne Daniels says the organisation was calling on the Government to increase health funding and implement culturally appropriate nurse-to-patient and midwife-to-patient ratios in all health care settings.

“From 10-20 June we will take this message to different communities in Aotearoa on the Ratio Justice Bus Tour.

“We can’t solve the understaffing crisis unless the Coalition Government puts more money into health. However, in Budget 2024 the bulk of health funding that was announced was committed to meeting cost pressure funding. This means there is limited funding for new initiatives in health and nothing concrete announced for nurses, midwives and health care assistants.”

Ms Daniels and other senior NZNO members will visit towns and cities throughout the country to relay the health risks people and their whānau face if ratios are not mandated soon.

More nurses are desperately needed and having culturally appropriate ratios is the best way to ensure the best and most efficient health service for all New Zealanders, she said.

“Most states in Australia as well as Ireland and Wales, and California in the US and British Columbia in Canada, now have fixed nurse-to-patient ratios to improve the quality of health care. Many developing countries are also implementing the system.

“Since being introduced in Australia nearly 10 years ago they’ve resulted in fewer readmissions and shorter hospital stays, resulting in better patient outcomes and tens of millions being saved in the health budget.”

Over the 11 days, three buses will simultaneously travel down the North and South islands with events organised in towns and cities to coincide with the arrival of the buses. The towns include Whangārei, Kawakawa, Kerikeri, Kaitāia, Kaikohe, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatāne, Gisborne, Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Hāwera, Whanganui, Levin, Nelson, Blenheim, Kaikōura, Christchurch, Dunedin, Balclutha, Gore, Invercargill, and Queenstown.

The tour starts in Nelson (South) and Whangārei (North) on 10 June and ends in Queenstown and Gisborne on 20 June.
