Dürnstein – a fairy-tale town by the Danube

durnstein tourist info

You will find several picturesque villages in the Wachau region along the Danube, but one of my favourites is Dürnstein. The tiny town on the banks of the Danube gets its charm from a mix of authentic historic buildings, its river-side location and good old Austrian hospitality.

Dürnstein is taken out of a medieval novel. Dürnstein clings to a narrow strip on the north bank of the Danube in Lower Austria . The small town has taken its name from the castle which occupies the cliffs above. Luckily, the town is much better preserved than the castle, which only consists of a few crumbled walls and towers today. Moreover, Dürnstein, located in the middle of Wachau’s wine and fruit region, is a popular destination for foreign and Austrian tourists. Therefore, this well-preserved medieval small town is absolutely worth visiting for a day or two.

Discovering Dürnstein

Lovely Dürnstein has about 800 inhabitants, most living outside the town walls. Narrow cobbled streets surrounded by historic buildings are hidden behind a fortification wall. As we stroll through the town’s main gate, “Kremser Tor”, it’s almost like leaving this century and moving backwards. Well, if you manage to overlook the cars. From Kremser Tor (gate), the Hauptstrasse (main street) passes through the small town. We just had to make a few stops, as this is where we found most shops. For the best view of the Danube River from the town itself, we headed for the small viewing platform right outside the entrance to Hotel Schloss Dürnstein. Another option is to stroll down to the river bank by turning right outside the eastern city gate (Kremser Tor) and follow the Anzuggasse down towards the river along the wall.

Down by the riverside

A walk along the Danube gives you a different perspective of the lovely historic small town. Moreover, Dürnstein’s characteristic blue-white church tower landmark is best visible from the riverside. It’s part of the Stift Dürnstein monastery. The history of Dürnstein Abbey begins with the consecration of a Marian chapel donated by Elsbeth von Kuenring in 1372. Dürnstein Abbey is a Baroque jewel in which Provost Hieronymus Übelbacher (1710-1740) could translate the spirit and faith of his time into the language of architecture in an outstanding way. Constructed in Gothic and Baroque styles, mainly between 1400 and 1700, the monastery occupies a large chunk of the town. You can visit the monastery alone or do guided tours for a few euros.

Dürnstein, Lower Austria, Austria

Best in the off-season

At first glance, Dürnstein may seem a little kitsch with all the souvenir shops crowded with tourists on foot or bicycles. Nevertheless, do not be fooled by all the souvenir shops. Look past all this, and you will also notice the history which creates all the buzz. After all, Dürnstein was incorporated into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2000. I have visited Dürnstein during all seasons, and all seasons have had different highlights. During the July and August holidays, the place is packed. In May and June, the number of tourists is far less, and it is easier to enjoy the atmosphere. Most visitors are day-trip tourists. Thus, in the afternoon, it usually quiets down a fair bit. Dürnstein old town, with its 340 inhabitants, is a small place, and you can leisurely explore the tiny village and enjoy a snack or refreshment within just 2-3 hours.

Dürnstein castle.

Arriving in Dürnstein, you cannot miss the ruins of a medieval castle on the rock outcrop above the town. We hiked up to the castle even though the ruins themselves were not worth visiting. Nonetheless, the effort paid dividends with the combination of amazing views and the lovely path through the vineyards. In another footnote, a Swede contributed to the destruction of the castle when General Torstensson and his army blew up the castle in 1645. After this, nobody cared to rebuild it. Dürnstein, or Castle Dürnstein, also left a historical and political footprint even further back. From December 1192 until March 1193, the English king Richard Lionheart was imprisoned in the castle. Well, that is what the legend says. Either way, when you stand in the castle, you quickly understand why they chose this location. The view of the Danube Valley is simply phenomenal.

Wine & apricot liqueur

We did not fail to notice that Wachau is one of Austria’s premier wine regions. Wherever we looked, we were surrounded by vineyards. Moreover, vines are also used as ornamental plants, and you will also notice them inside the town. Farmers around Dürnstein also cultivate different varieties of fruit, one of the most popular being apricots (Marillen in German). Apricots are sold as fresh fruit but are also made into a liqueur. In Dürnstein and the surrounding farms, you can buy locally produced snaps and liqueurs. Or you can choose mass-produced from larger distilleries in the supermarkets. If you’re unsure what to choose, most shops offer a tasting of their products.

How to get there

By boat: In the summer months (April – September), you can sail to Dürnstein from Krems and Melk and on a day cruise from Vienna that stops in Dürnstein for about 2 hours.

By car: Dürnstein is located on the northern bank of the Danube River, and Route 3 (B3) runs past the small town. There is paid parking outside the town walls.

By train/bus: You can go by train to Krems, where you change to a bus for the last leg. Takes about 2-2.5 hours.

A perfect day exploring the adorable town of Dürnstein, Austria

September 21, 2018 by Karen Turner Leave a Comment

While researching where we would go while in Austria, I came across the fairytale town of Dürnstein, Austria.  This stunning town along the Danube is a popular day trip from Vienna although any history (and wine) lover is guaranteed to fall in love with Dürnstein.  I’ll be discussing the history of Dürnstein, why to visit Dürnstein, what to know about climbing Burgruine Dürnstein, and what to do in Dürnstein if you have an afternoon (or a day).

  • 1 Why visit Dürnstein
  • 2 What to know about visiting Dürnstein without a tour
  • 3 The history of Dürnstein
  • 4 Climbing Burgruine Dürnstein
  • 5.1 Go for a wine tasting at one of the wine taverns or nearby wineries

Why visit Dürnstein

Beautiful colorful building in Dürnstein, Austria. The historic center of Dürnstein is worth enjoying on a day trip! #travel #austria #Dürnstein #europe

Dürnstein is a beautiful Austrian town just one hour from Vienna by car and a similar amount by boat.  This beautiful city sits along in the protected Wachau Landscape, which is part of the Danube Valley.  Many people end up visiting Dürnstein on a day trip from Vienna, however if you’re interested in culture as well as wine, the Wachau region has a lot more to offer.

If you love history as well as castles, you’ll fall in love with the public ruins above Dürnstein where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned by the Austrian King. These ruins, a steep walk from town, are free to access to anyone and provide the perfect viewpoint to admire the many vineyards as well as the picturesque town below.

Dürnstein is full of colorful houses, cozy wine taverns, and and historic monuments, including the iconic blue tower that is part of the stunning Stift Dürnstein. Whether you only have one day outside of Vienna or will be visiting other cities in Austria, I recommend taking at least a few hours (or a whole day) to enjoy this beautiful town.

What to know about visiting Dürnstein without a tour

Dürnstein was very easy to visit without a tour if you intend just to relax, hike, and drink wine.  It’s easiest to visit with a car, however you can visit Dürnstein without a car. It’s possible to take the train, however the more scenic way is to take a river cruise down the Danube river.

More realistically, I’d recommend bringing your baggage with you to stay overnight in this picturesque town if you’re planning to eventually end up in Salzburg to minimize transportation.

The beautiful blue tower of Dürnstein, Austria. This iconic sight of Dürnstein is one of the reasons to visit this fairytale town in Austria, just a day trip from Vienna in the heart of the Wachau region. #travel #vienna #austria #europe

Parking in Dürnstein was quite difficult and we struggled to find legal spots.  We finally found one towards the outside of town, but if you’re driving, you might spend at least twenty minutes searching for legal parking…

We visited the Danube valley without a tour, however if you intend to consume some of the fantastic wine from this region and you don’t want to worry about a designated driver, I recommend booking a tour to deal with transportation if you’re only taking a day trip from Vienna.

The history of Dürnstein

In the feudal period, the Kuenring family was given a vast amount of land in Lower Austria. As the guardians of this land, they endeavoured to protect it.  Hadmar I built a castle on the cliffs above Dürnstein.

During the Crusades, specifically the third Crusade, the holy Roman Emperor of the time promised to fight for the Pope.  Frederick I dies en route, however the other monarchs heading to Jerusalem end up offending each other.  This included Richard I of England, Philip II of France, and Leopold V of Austria.

Castle ruins and mountains in the distance in Dürnstein, Austria. #travel #castles #mountains #austria

Richard the I is also referred to as Richard the Lionheart.   During the time where the Kings were together, he ended up tearing down an Austrian flag, which offended the Austrian king.  This act along with rumors that Richard the Lionheart ordered the murder of his cousin left the King ready to get revenge.

Following his crusade, Richard attempted to go back to England after a shipwreck.  He ended up being identified and captured in Austria. He was then imprisoned in for four months in 1192 in Burg Dürnstein (now in ruins). Interestingly enough, the English king was allowed entertainment from singers and its said that one of his minstrels recognized his voice while he was imprisoned.

Epic photo of Burgruine Dürnstein. These Austrian castle ruins are free to visit in Dürnstein, Austria. Dürnstein is one of the cutest towns that is just a day trip from Vienna. #travel #austria #castles

After being held for nearly a year, Richard the Lionheart was transferred to Trifels Castle in Southern Germany by the next Holy Roman Emperor, Henry VI.  In return for releasing their king, he asked for 150,000 marks, a massive sum of money today.  50,000 marks were paid for the release of Richard who was able to return to England the next year.

1192 was actually the first time that the name “Dürnstein” was used to refer to this town/castle.  Shortly after, it was referred it as the city name. Unfortunately the medieval city was destroyed by a fire in 1551, however the city was rebuilt in only ten years.   In 1645, Burg Dürnstein was destroyed by the Swedish during the thirty year war.  In 1679, Burg Dürnstein was abandoned and left to rot.

Much of the city built in the earlier period still exists today and the entire Wachau region has been recognized by UNESCO for its unique culture landscape, intact architecture, and careful conservation of culture.

Climbing Burgruine Dürnstein

Beautiful view of Dürnstein from Burgruine Dürnstein, one of the best things to do in Dürnstein. These epic castle ruins are free to visit. #travel #austria

I strongly recommend wearing a good pair of sneakers as the walk up is fairly steep. I saw a couple of people wearing sandals, but sneakers provide the best grip if you intend to climb around the ruins. I would not recommend using trekking poles as the ground is a mix of hard rock as well as pavement in parts.

As you walk through the historic center of Dürnstein, you’ll see a sign telling you to turn off to the left towards the Burgruine.  You’ll follow this up.  Depending on your level of fitness, this can be an easy scramble up the hill or a tougher climb (due to the many steps).  I would say that it takes about 15 minutes to climb above the town to reach the first level of the fortress.

For the best photos, I recommend continuing upwards to the ledge above with the second level of the fortress (another 5 minutes).   If you really want to continue hiking, you can hike to the next town over from here.  On a hot day, it’s really key to bring water with you as the sun can be quite intense on top of the castle.

Other things to do in Dürnstein

Go for a wine tasting at one of the wine taverns or nearby wineries.

Beautiful view of wineries outside of Dürnstein, Austria with a view of the Burgruine Dürnstein in the distance. Dürnstein is at the heart of Austrian wine country, just a day trip from Vienna. #travel #vienna #austria #wineries

There are numerous wine taverns in Dürnstein where you can order a fantastic local wine. The Wachau produces some of the best Austrian wine with especially delicious Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners.

You’ll find numerous wine shops in town as well as wineries where you can enjoy the wine from the source.  Many of the wineries are located along the curve on the other side of Dürnstein along Unterloiben, a short walk from town.

Try the local specialties

Apricot Liqueur in Dürnstein, Austria. You must try this drink if you visit Lower Austria. #travel #austria #alcohol

This region of Austria is quite famous for Marillenlikor, which is produces using fresh apricots.  This sweet liquor can be easily found at a number of shops in town, so consider picking some up.  (The trappist monastery Stift Engelszell in Upper Austria also produces their own.)

Visit Dürnstein Abbey

Beautiful view of Stift Dürnstein. This beautiful abbey in Dürnstein, Austria is at the top of the things to see in Dürnstein, Austria! #travel #austria

The Abbey was first constructed as a church that was part of the ruling family’s castle. In 1400, part of the castle was donated to the Augustinian Canons to be used as a monastery.   It was modernized in 1710 in the elaborate Baroque style with stunning paintings and sculptures.  Dürnstein’s iconic blue tower was built in this time.  One notable feature of the Monastery is its impressive organ with over 860 pipes and two pedals.

The abbey was dissolved in 1788, however it still remains part of a monastery. It’s possible to tour the abbey and to view the stunning blue icon of Dürnstein for a few euros between April and October. (Check hours ahead.)

Where to stay in Dürnstein

Hotel Schloss Dürnstein, one of the best places to stay in Dürnstein. This beautiful castle in Dürnstein is a must-see! #travel #luxurytravel #europe #castles

I really recommend taking the time to slow down while you’re in Dürnstein. You’ll find a number of affordable as well as luxurious options in Dürnstein for those looking for a romantic stay in wine country.  I was particularly impressed with the 5*  Hotel Schloss Dürnstein shown above.   History lovers might prefer  Hotel Richard Löwenherz , which sits inside a historic convent from medieval times with views of the Danube.

It’s also possible to stay in the picturesque Krems an der Donau or  Weißenkirchen in der Wachau if you’re looking to stay elsewhere in the Wachau while taking a day trip to Dürnstein.

Durnstein Things to Do

Dürnstein , Austria lies just northwest of Vienna, and is known for its many sightseeing opportunities, wonderful dining, shops, and historically significant locations. There is plenty to do here on a long or short stay.

Rich History

Historically significant sites abound here, the first being the old entrance to the city, known by the locals as Steiner Tor. In English that’s Entrance to The Old Town. It is the only of four that has survived into this century. Multiple crests from 1756 adorn the entrance, the most remarkable being a crowned double eagle.

Walk The Town

Durnstein is a wonderful place to take a stroll. Old and narrow cobblestone streets lead to old and beautiful buildings. The town is not overrun with tourists like so many other European destinations. Expect to see murals and iron painted signs welcoming you in the area. There is an easy walk, flat and level, that’s right beside the Danube with good views of the ruins above the town.

The Blue Monastery Church and Abbey

The original colors have adorned the church since the day it was finished being built in the 1700’s . The blue and white of the steeple represent heaven, and the gray and yellow of the abbey represent earth. It is famous as one of the finest baroque towers in all of Austria. You can take a tour for a small fee and see all the paintings and sculpture inside. You can even see St James’ skeleton inside the Durnstein Abbey Church.

Durnstein  Castle Ruins

The old ruins of Durnstein castle overlook the entire town at the highest rocky elevation peering over the Danube River and Wachau Valley. It is spectacular, provides a wonderful view and steep hike, and is free to visit. Make sure to bring good hiking shoes and plan on 30 minutes each way from the Abbey on the water in town. Expect an incredible scenery as payment for all of your hard work hiking, because you can see the entire town from up here. The castle served as a prison to King Lionheart in 1192 during the third crusade. The castle was left in ruin after Swedish troops nearly destroyed it.

Dürnstein in Wachau Valley: One of Austria’s Prettiest Medieval Villages

by janecanapini | Feb 29, 2020 | Austria , Europe

Durnstein Abbey and castle from river

When you picture river cruising in Europe, you probably imagine stepping off a luxurious ship to explore a pretty little cobblestoned town perched on the banks of a storied waterway. That is exactly the experience you can expect when you sail down the Danube and drop anchor in front of the picturesque village of Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley of Austria. But whether you arrive by river or by land, this particular medieval village on the Danube makes for a wonderful day trip because of its romantic history, stunning location and of course, wine!

Dürnstein: A medieval village in the heart of a UNESCO-protected wine region

Durnstein Austria from downriver

Dürnstein  means ‘dry rock’ in German, and the name originated from the medieval castle that sits above this Austrian village. The castle’s location on a rocky hilltop overlooking the Danube meant it was also high above the potential flood waters of the river, so its position was both solid and dry.

The village of Dürnstein is built at the base of this cliff mere meters from the water’s edge, but it is this proximity to the river that adds to its beauty. Enclosed by a medieval wall that is over 800 years old, and surrounded by terraced vineyards in one of the most beautiful regions of Austria, the Wachau Valley, it’s no wonder Dürnstein is one of Austria’s prettiest villages.

Durnstein Vines and Castle

The beauty of the Wachau Valley is perhaps best appreciated from the river, as this stretch of the Danube winds its way between hilly shores crowned with castles and monasteries, and terraced with lush vineyards and apricot orchards.

The ‘high visual quality’ of this cultural landscape is so impressive that UNESCO has actually designated the Wachau Valley a World Heritage Centre. And the little town of Dürnstein just happens to be the jewel in its centre.

TIP: You don’t have to be on a week-long river cruise to enjoy the Wachau Valley by boat; there are many companies that provide  river excursions and day trips leaving from ports all along the Danube. There’s also a  really cheap ferry  at Dürnstein that takes people across the river to the opposite shore, if you just want to see the village from that side.

Dürnstein puts the blue in Danube

While there are many waterfront towns along the Danube, you’ll know you’re approaching Dürnstein when you spot the Abbey’s signature blue steeple, the only one of its kind in Austria.  Stift Dürnstein , as the Abbey is known in German, dates back to the 14 th  century, but it was in the mid 1600s that the prior Hieronymus Ubelbacher oversaw its redesign, adding baroque architectural elements and its uniquely-coloured steeple.

“Monastery Envy” Contributed to the Abbey’s design

Ubelbacher wanted to make his church stand out against bigger, more impressive monasteries like the Benedictine Monastery upriver at Melk, which was large enough and impressive enough to host the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa and her court on a visit. So to give his much smaller abbey some presence of its own, the Abbot chose a colour palette of Imperial yellow for Dürnstein’s monastery and a unique blue for the steeple.

Durnstein Austria Abbey facade

‘Imperial yellow’ was a favourite colour associated with the Royal Family (like their summer palace at Schoenbrunn ). The smalte blue colour, resembling the blue on Wedgewood porcelain, was meant to symbolize the passage to heaven, but it was probably chosen by the Abbot to ensure his church would be a standout in the Valley. It was a good choice as this still holds true today, and Dürnstein’s blue steeple is one of the village’s signature landmarks.

TIP: Guided tours of Dürnstein Abbey are offered for a small fee of around 7 euros. This will give you views of the interior chapel, as well as access to the outside Danube terrace. But if you only have a limited time in Dürnstein, I would skip the tour and just admire the church from the outside.

Dürnstein Castle and Richard the Lionheart

The other famous landmark in Dürnstein is the castle that sits on the top of the rocky hill behind the town, which today is not much more than a set of ruins with a great view. But this castle was where King Richard the Lionheart was held captive for ransom in the 12 th  century, and has inspired a few legends of its own.

Merry-Joseph Blondel 1781-1853 Richard_coeur_de_lion_Public Domain

How the King of England became a prisoner in Dürnstein castle is well-documented: apparently, King Richard had made enemies amongst many European rulers during his 3 rd  crusade to the Holy Land, including fellow Crusader, Duke Leopold of Austria, whom he had offended at the Seige of Acre . Because of this emnity between him and Leopold, Richard was forced to travel in disguise through Austria on his route back to England. Unfortunately, Richard was recognized, captured and imprisoned by the Duke in the newly built Dürnstein castle. The location of the captured King was kept secret, however – that is until the troubadour known as Blondel de Nesle discovered King Richard was being held there.

And here’s where fact and fiction get a little fuzzy, but make for a wonderful romantic story nonetheless….

Blondel, who had served King Richard in the Crusades, became friends with the ruler over a shared love of music. After Richard’s imprisonment, Blondel decided to search for his captive king by travelling from castle to castle throughout Austria, playing King Richard’s favourite song. From inside his prison at Dürnstein, Richard heard Blondel and ‘answered’ by singing the second verse to the song.

Durnstein Blondel info plaque

Having discovered Richard’s location, the travelling minstrel then became ‘instrumental’ (see what I did there?) in arranging for England to pay a whopping ransom of 35 tons of silver for the King’s return.

Whether the  legend of Blondel is based on fact, is entirely fiction or something in between (the jury is very much out on this), Dürnstein Castle IS where Richard the Lionheart was held. And the exorbitant sum of 35 tons of silver (literally a King’s ransom!) WAS paid, and part of that silver helped establish the Austrian Mint. In fact, in 2019, to commemorate its founding , the Mint issued a silver collector coin depicting King Leopold in his Crusader armour.

Whether you believe the Blondel legend or not, you still might want to do the climb up to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle, if for no other reason than to admire the impressive panorama of the gorgeous Wachau Valley below.

FUN FACT: The tax imposed on England to pay for King Richard’s silver ransom fuelled so much social unrest that it probably inspired the stories of Robin Hood.

Medieval Charm Galore in Dürnstein Village

Unlike its ruined castle, the village of Dürnstein has been well preserved with most of its medieval character remaining intact, which is one of the reasons that this village is so picturesque.

Durnstein Austria Medieval Streets

Cobblestone streets and courtyards are part of Dürnstein’s charm, and there are small boutiques and restaurants tucked into its historic buildings. Plus the town is basically a pedestrian only zone, since traffic must bypass the town through a tunnel so that cars don’t disturb the village. All of which adds to Dürnstein’s storybook look and feel.

Durnstein Christmas boutique

Fruits of the Valley

Today Dürnstein caters mostly to visitors who come to admire its beauty and sample some of the local products that are grown and produced here. The Wachau Valley is particularly  known for its wine , with more than 300 boutique wineries and 3700 acres of terraced vineyards. So you really can’t visit Dürnstein without sampling the local vintages, the most popular of which are Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings (the dry Riesling was definitely mine).

Durnstein Blue Hour with castle illuminated

I can’t think of a better way to top off your visit to Dürnstein than to enjoy a glass of wine – or two – in one of the village’s bars or restaurants.

Durnstein Wine Pub sign

Of course, the Wachau is also known for producing Austria’s best apricots and there are many products for sale in Dürnstein’s boutiques, including jams, chocolates, and the best of both worlds: apricot liqueur!

Stories from a Storybook Village

Even if all you bring home from your visit to Dürnstein are romantic legends and photos of one of Austria’s most charming villages – and most beautiful regions – these are souvenirs enough to make this day trip worthwhile.

Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

As we cruised the Wachau Valley past small villages, castle ruins and vineyards, I was happy to sit back, relax and enjoy the view. That is until I saw a beautiful blue, Baroque tower come into view.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

Right away I recognized Dürnstein, the town I had wanted to see most during our visit to the Wachau Valley. As we approached Dürnstein’s colourful riverside buildings, my relaxation turned to eager anticipation. I couldn’t wait to get off the boat and explore this charming town, but I was especially excited to hike up to its ruined medieval castle.

Getting to Know Dürnstein

Dürnstein is a small town of just over 900 people best known for its grape growing, historic character, and castle that imprisoned English King Richard the Lionheart.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

Dürnstein has a long history, stretching back to at least 1019, but it wasn’t actually recorded as a town until 1347.

It was once the seat of the medieval Kuenring dynasty but later was acquired by the Habsburgs in 1356, after the Kuenring family died off.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

The town’s location was ideal during the Middle Ages. The rocky, steep riverbanks protected against floods and allowed for fortification.

Today, Dürnstein is regarded as the most romantic place in the Wachau Valley, making it a popular destination for tourists visiting the area.

Our Visit to Dürnstein

Our first impression of Dürnstein was that it was such a cute little town. We could feel the town’s rich history as we wandered the streets, imagining people from medieval times milling about the same picturesque streets.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

The main street was colourful and had some tourist shops, but thankfully it wasn’t overrun by people (at least when we were there in the late afternoon).

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

After walking the streets for a bit, we started the somewhat challenging hike up to Dürnstein Castle via the ruin path (ruinenweg) at the south end of town.

The trail was really steep in some areas and was a mixture of man-made rocky steps and natural “stairs” of rocks. As we figured out later, this was sort of the “back-way” up to the castle.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

The heart-pumping hike was worth it though because the views of Dürnstein, the Danube and the Wachau Valley were captivating- some of the best views I’ve seen!

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

We walked all the way up to the top of the castle where the views just got better and better. We explored the ruins and took some time just to stand and enjoy the sights. We really didn’t want to leave Dürnstein!

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

Finally deciding to make our way back into town, we chose to take a different trail than the way we came up. This new trail turned out to be the main route to the castle. It was more of a slope, rather than steep climb, and had no perilous rock steps. There were also signs explaining the story of King Richard the Lionheart and his imprisonment in Dürnstein Castle.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

Dürnstein Castle (Burgruine Dürnstein) and Richard the Lionheart

The construction of Dürnstein Castle was ordered in the middle of the 12 th century by Hadmar I of Kuenring. Its location was strategic in nature, situated high on a rocky hill overlooking the Danube River and the town of Dürnstein below.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

This stone castle would later gain notoriety as one of the places English King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

King Richard’s imprisonment at Dürnstein was the result of a dispute with Leopold V, Duke of Austria, during the Third Crusade. Richard earned his place in Leopold’s bad books when he threw down Leopold’s flag after the Battle of Acre. Leopold also accused Richard of plotting the murder of his cousin, Conrad of Montferrat.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

This bitter feud led to Richard the Lionheart being captured near Vienna, shortly before Christmas 1192. Duke Leopold ordered the king be brought to Dürnstein Castle, where he was imprisoned until March 1193.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

King Richard was released from Dürnstein on a technicality- it was unlawful to capture a fellow crusader. As a consequence, Pope Celestine III excommunicated Duke Leopold and custody of King Richard was given to Emperor Henry VI.

Soon after, the emperor had King Richard imprisoned at Trifels Castle in Germany, where he was held ransom to raise money for Henry’s army. This move led to Pope Celestine III also excommunicating Henry VI for the continued wrongful imprisonment of Richard.

After all this, King Richard the Lionheart was finally released on February 4, 1194.

Final Thoughts About Our Visit to Dürnstein

We very much enjoyed our visit to Dürnstein, especially the hike to the ruined castle. The views were spectacular and I was fascinated by Richard the Lionheart’s tumultuous tale. As I read about his story, a movie played in my mind of all the drama that must have occurred here.

travelyesplease.com | Discovering the Beauty and Intrigue of Dürnstein

Dürnstein is small, but definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the Wachau region. The irresistible mix of historic sites, colourful architecture, and breathtaking natural scenery made Dürnstein one of our favourite places in Austria!

Tips for Visiting Dürnstein

Getting to Dürnstein by Boat: We visited Dürnstein while cruising the Wachau Valley from Melk to Krems. Dürnstein was the last stop before Krems, the final destination. If you decide to disembark here, you’ll have to find your own way into Krems, as the boat does not stop long enough for people to explore.

Getting From Dürnstein to Krems: To get from Dürnstein to Krems (where we caught a train back to Vienna), we walked from main street down a vineyard-lined road (in the direction of Krems) to a main intersection where we caught a bus into town. We just asked a shopkeeper for help and they told us where to catch the bus. The walk wasn’t long. You can also check this site for bus routes and information (in German but you can switch it to English).

Hiking to Dürnstein Castle: There are two different trails to hike to Dürnstein Castle, both starting from the south end of town. One is an easier walk with historical information posted along the way, but it’s not as scenic. The other option is more challenging in terms of terrain, but the views are fabulous! The scenic trail starts beside main street, just before the south end of town. Since the two trails form a loop, you can take one way up and the other way down, like we did. Look for “ruinenweg” on the Google Map of Dürnstein to see the trails to Burgruine Dürnstein.

Things to Do

This little town is so adorable, even if all you do is walk around, you'll have fun. However , there are several activities that you must do. Iv'e included them here along with a few others.

Old Town Durnstein

Explore Durnstein Old Town

Castle Ruins Above the Town of Durnstein taken from the Danube River

Durnstein Castle

Visit Durnstein Castle Ruins: Hike up to the Durnstein Castle ruins, perched on a hill overlooking the town and the Danube River. Enjoy panoramic views of the Wachau Valley from the top. The hike takes approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on your pace. I did not get a chance to do this since I had too much shopping, wine tastings, and apricot tasting planned. But make sure to add this to your list if you have time.

Wine & Apricot Tasting

Wine Tasting: Durnstein is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. Take part in a wine tasting session at one of the local wineries to hear about the history of the vineyards and the families that own them. Of course, you must sample the famous Wachau wines, including Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and learn about the winemaking process. Don't be surprised when the Riesling you taste here is not sweet, that is the way it is supposed to be in this region. Another favorite is Apricot Schnapps tasting at the abbey. Don't miss this one it is really fun! You will also taste apricot jam and candies.

Ride a Bike on the Danube

Bike Ride in the Wachau Valley: Rent a bicycle or get one from the river cruise ship and explore the Wachau Valley on two wheels. Cycle through the vineyards, quaint villages, and scenic paths along the Danube River. Stop by some of the local wineries for tastings or take a leisurely break by the river.

Durnstein Abbey Church

Visit the Durnstein Abbey Church, also known as Stift Durnstein. Admire the impressive Gothic architecture and the beautiful interior of the church. The church also houses historical artifacts and artwork.

Have a Bite to Eat

Indulge in the culinary delights of the Wachau region by enjoying a traditional Austrian lunch or dinner at one of the local restaurants. Sample local specialties like Wiener Schnitzel or Wachauer Marillenknödel (apricot dumplings) paired with a glass of regional wine.

Pro Tip: If you are going on your own, make sure to check the availability and timings of winery visits, and other activities in advance, as they may vary depending on the season.

  •   The ruin of Dürnstein

The ruin of Dürnstein

The city of Dürnstein and the ruin of Dürnstein Castle are connected by a wall. The castle was built between 1140-1145 by the family Kuenring (Hadmar I), and in 1645 it was demolished by a blast carried out by the Swedes under General Torstenson. A model of the city and the ruin are on display at Dürnstein Abbey.

Richard the Lionheart

The castle became famous through the legend of Richard the Lionheart. The trail that was created around the ruin of Dürnstein will lead you through some of the most beautiful natural and cultural scenic outlook points in the region of the Wachau. The legend of Richard the Lionheart says that upon returning from the Crusades, the English King tore up the Austrian flag and refused to share his spoils of war with Leopold V. Consequently, Leopold V held the English King prisoner in the castle from 1192 – 1193.

The royal prisoner was permitted to receive travelling singers (Troubadours) for his entertainment. This is likely where the saga of the singer Blondel comes from. The story says that the King’s faithful minnesinger travelled from castle to castle until he found him in Dürnstein by singing a refrain, which the prisoner sang back. Richard the Lionheart was released after the payment of a ransom of 150,000 silver marks.

Freely Accessible All Year Round

Anyone who ascends the romantic ruin – it takes about 20 minutes from the center of town – will be rewarded by the magnificent view.

Hiking Trails

The ruin of Dürnstein is located on one of the 14 legs of the Wachau World Heritage Trail. More information about this hiking trail can be found at www.welterbesteig.at . Further information about hiking can be found on the website  www.bergfex.at or follow our link: “ hiking tips ”.

Artificially Intelligent Help for Planning Your Summer Vacation

Travel-focused A.I. bots and more eco-friendly transportation options in online maps and search tools can help you quickly organize your seasonal getaway.

  • Share full article

The home page for the Layla travel-planning site, which shows a photo of a woman next to the word “LAYLA” in big type, above a search box showing the query “I need a beach vacation without sharks or tourists.”

By J. D. Biersdorfer

J.D. Biersdorfer has been using smartphone apps for travel since the summer of 2007.

The summer travel season starts in just a few weeks, but if you are looking for software that goes beyond simply booking flights and hotels, you’re in luck. Search engines enhanced by artificial intelligence can help with your research and outline full itineraries. Certain older apps have recently been updated to suggest more eco-friendly travel options. And keeping it all organized on your phone is easier than ever. Here’s an overview.

Using an A.I. Travel Agent

General-purpose A.I.-powered search tools and chatbots like Google’s Gemini spin up a list of things to do on your vacation when asked, but A.I. bots that are fine-tuned for travel queries are often more comprehensive. These bots scout destinations, plan itineraries, search for accommodations and flights, map out road trips and do more — grabbing a lot of information at once and saving you all that time-consuming web trawling.

Give the software your specifics — like destination, length of stay, interests — and see what it suggests. Many A.I. helpers are free to use if you sign up for an account, but some charge a subscription fee for premium services; your app store has specifics.

Layla , formerly Roam Around, is one of the free vacation-oriented A.I. helpers you can find online, and it has teamed up with travel sites that include Skyscanner , Get Your Guide and Booking.com . If you prefer land-based car and camper journeys, Roadtrippers (free trial; $60 year) includes real-time traffic and air-quality information along with route planning. And old stalwarts like Tripadvisor and Expedia are now using A.I.-generated vacation builders.

But as others have also noted, while A.I. travel planners have much potential, many are still works in progress and usually display disclaimers admitting so.

A.I. bots have been known to offer generic advice like “enjoy lunch at a local restaurant,” suggest activities that are out of season or too far apart, repeatedly recommend the same restaurant, consistently steer you to their advertisers or point you to locations that have closed. If you ask different bots the same question, you may get nearly identical suggestions, all scraped from the same tourism websites.

Still, A.I. travel apps are improving as they learn, and can be useful for the trip research and coordination phase. Just be sure to double-check the bot’s work before you commit to a plan.

Finding Earth-Friendly Options

There’s no shortage of apps for booking transportation to your destination. But if you want to keep the environment in mind, recent updates to Google’s Maps and Search apps now suggest routes and methods that lower your personal impact on the planet.

Google for the past few years has been pointing people to flights with lower carbon emissions , alternative train routes , fuel-efficient driving directions and eco-friendly hotels . It is now expanding its walking, biking and public transit suggestions alongside car routes in several major cities and adding more electric-vehicle charging information. Google Flights shows jet emissions estimates . Google Search has a “consider taking the train” nudge with rail routes and prices under certain flight results.

Apple’s Maps app also shows mass transit , walking and cycling options for getting around town, along with charge-friendly routes for electric vehicles . However, the default apps on your phone are not the only aids. Third-party software for directions and sustainable travel abound.

For example, Citymapper, which covers most major cities in the United States, Europe and Asia, includes environmental impact statistics on some trips. Its directions often include accessibility options that avoid stairways , along with routes for the fastest, cheapest or easiest way to get where you’re going; Citymapper is free with in-app purchases.

Other apps available for those seeking environmentally minded vacations include Bikemap for community-sourced cycling routes around the world, HappyCow for vegan and vegetarian travelers and Tap Hydration and Water Stations to locate sources for refilling reusable water bottles.

Keeping Organized

If you don’t already have software for consolidating your trip information, your phone’s default apps can help. Electronic boarding passes, hotel reservations and advance tickets can be quickly added to the digital wallet on your phone; a pragmatic paper backup tucked in your bag is insurance. Google and Apple offer to automatically add reservations and events from email and messages to your calendar .

Free services like TripIt (and its phone apps ), TripCase (also with Android or iOS apps) and Wanderlog automatically put all your travel information in one place, typically by scanning the information in your confirmation emails. TripIt Pro , a $50-a-year subscription version, adds more features like seat, fare and airline-points trackers, as well as international travel tools and regional risk alerts like those for extreme weather that can affect airline schedules and public safety .

A.I. bots and travel apps will continue to evolve and, hopefully, make vacation planning even easier in the future. Just don’t forget to occasionally put the phone down and enjoy your time off once you get there.

As experts warn that A.I.-generated images, audio and video could influence the 2024 elections, OpenAI is releasing a tool designed to detect content created by DALL-E , its popular image generator.

American and Chinese diplomats plan to meet in Geneva to begin what amounts to the first, tentative arms control talks  over the use of A.I.

Wayve, a London maker of A.I. systems for autonomous vehicles, said that it had raised $1 billion , an illustration of investor optimism about A.I.’s ability to reshape industries.

The Age of A.I.

A new category of apps promises to relieve parents of drudgery, with an assist from A.I.  But a family’s grunt work is more human, and valuable, than it seems.

Despite Mark Zuckerberg’s hope for Meta’s A.I. assistant to be the smartest , it struggles with facts, numbers and web search.
