What Our Members Say

After much research and looking into other agencies, I decided to make ATHome my host agency and have no regrets. I immediately felt the comradery and warmth from Elaine and Lynn. They answered my numerous questions in a timely manner, were available when I came across an issue that I was unsure of and made sure that I was connected to multiple suppliers. Although they aren't one of the biggest agencies, in my opinion they are the best. I'm happy with the decision that I made and am looking forward to a long and successful partnership.

- Aiyana Phillips

I have been working with ATHome (AARC) since 2008. I have been really pleased with the support and training I have received. They are always receptive and helpful when I call. The staff are knowledgeable and informative. They have always assisted me with any questions or problems that arise. I would recommend them as a host agency for anyone who wants to become a travel advisor.

- Jesse Mash

I retired from the Navy and was looking for a way to supplement my retirement and work from home. I loved travel and started researching the business and how to get started. I settled on ATHome as they provided everything I needed to get started. The training, website and access to the best travel providers. From the start you are treated like a professional the staff is very responsive to your needs and provide excellent support. They make you feel special, whether it is your first booking or your millionth. If you love travel and helping other live their dreams, I would highly recommend ATHome to give you the tools, training and edge you need to succeed.

- Joseph Bishop

At Home is an awesome host company to be a member of. I have been a member for years. They are professional and prompt in answering questions and addressing any issues. The company communicates the most recent travel updates and provides current travel trainings. Travel support on bookings and payment are completed expeditiously.

- Zenobia Cureton

Are you interested in travel? Would you like to help others find their dream vacations? I strongly recommend ATHome. I found them online approximately six years ago and am retired and running a home-based travel agency. The courses supplied are comprehensive and you have a mentor to help you through any rough spots. When you are through with your training, tools are provided for you to begin working in this awesome industry. The mentors during training do not go away after you start your business; there is a team of people providing you with all the support you will ever need. I personally have two very special individuals that are always right here when I need them. When I email or phone, my questions or concerns are taken care of. I want to add we have just been introduced to a new training and booking site that is wonderful!

- Sharron Motry

ATHome has been great. Starting a new travel agency is sometimes challenging. ATHome walked me through everything. Each time I came across something I was not certain of, they were quick to help me. They have helped my first year as a travel advisor to be a successful one.

- Cynthia Seitz

I am new to being a travel advisor. I'm learning a lot. Everyone has been very helpful. All of my questions are answered and information that I didn't ask about is given. You all go above and beyond. It will also help them get updated information about the documents needed for domestic and international travel, immigration rules, and travel insurance-related data.

3. Business travel training for employees

business-travel-training-for-employees

It is not mandatory for employees who frequently travel for business reasons. However, such training will help them become more aware of their responsibilities as a corporate traveler and the difference between business travel and leisure travel. They will be better organized while traveling and ensure no details are missing from their travel plan.

Employees can enjoy the business tour without dealing with any last-minute hassle and stress when traveling with a plan. They will know what to do in a particular situation and whom to contact in a crisis while in a foreign land. They will learn how to prepare travel statements and manage their finances and accounts to comply with corporate policies.

How to choose the best business travel course

Many courses are available from private training institutes and government-managed institutions. These courses aim to ease the stress on travel managers and employees, ensuring a better efficiency level while discharging their business travel duties.

You must research the various options available, including online courses. Check for references and testimonials. Also, make sure these courses cover all the aspects of corporate travel management in detail. The faculty also matters. The course must be conducted by industry experts or those who have worked closely with corporate travel specialists. The courses conducted by licensed and accredited institutes can always be relied on for quality and reliability.

What will be the ROI

Business travel training ROI measures your gains from the investment in the training program. It is a financial measure that deals with the advantages and business results emerging from imparting training to your managers and employees. You can measure the ROI by analyzing the productivity and output. You may also measure any other business metric directly connected to this process. To calculate ROI, the performance of the travel managers and sales generated from their efforts are compared to the cost of the training.

This course will help business travelers reduce the risks to themselves while traveling for work. It provides guidelines on how to adhere to travel policies, local rules, and regulations and abide by the terms and conditions of the places you will be staying for the duration of business travel. The course will also help business travelers take precautionary and evasive measures in alien environments frequented by other travelers, including airports, hotels, and while driving a car.

Travel Agent Training and Education, 2024

When it comes and choosing a travel agent training and education program to pave your journey to become a travel agent , it’s pretty much like the wild west out there. You might be saddled with questions such as

  • How do I know if a travel agent education is legit?
  • Is it right for my level of experience?
  • Will it get me off to a strong start as a travel agent?
  • Will it advance my professional development?

Travel agent education can be a significant investment of time and money, and you don’t want to waste it. Overwhelmed at the thought of wrangling all that information? Don’t be.

We’ve collected a ton of info on all the different options out there from free DIY educational resources to full-fledged degrees. This article guide will help you determine what type of travel agent training program is best for you, how to evaluate the quality of a program and direct you to further resources.

⭐️ Travel agent training & Education: HAR highlights! ⭐️

Tips on Evaluating Travel Agent Training & Education Programs

You might be surprised to hear that there’s no travel agent exam you need to pass or degree to earn in order to sell travel. That’s right. Nada. Better yet? You don’t need a degree or certification either.

What exactly is required to sell travel? A travel agent accreditation . Beyond that, the only thing you need to sell travel is the skills to book a trip.

It sounds simple, but there’s more to meets the eye when it comes to booking a trip . Think of it this way: The average traveler spends over 20 hours browsing travel sites before they book a trip. Your task as a travel agent is to dramatically streamline the planning and booking process, booking the perfect trip in a fraction of the time.

This is where travel agent training and education opportunities enter the scene. They provide programs that cover all aspects of the industry ranging from getting more clients, marketing, booking, developing destination and product expertise, and much more.

Here's a teaser!

There are travel agent training and education opportunities abound. They cater to newbies as well as seasoned pros who’ve been selling travel before Millennials were out of diapers. So how do you decide which programs will meet your needs?

Here’s a few questions to consider as to whether or not a travel agent training program is for you:

  • Do I need a travel agent training or education program to join a host agency or consortium? Some hosts require either industry experience or an education program before you can sign on with them. If you’re interested in checking out host agencies as an option, be sure to check with your host to see what their minimum requirements are! (Pssst! You can ask them directly on the Q&A portion of their profiles ! )
  • Do I need a travel agent training program to be accredited? Some accreditation organizations require travel agent training and education before signing on. Others require a certain sales threshold. If you’re interested in pursuing your own accreditation, take a look here for their eligibility requirements.
  • Do I have the time and resources to cobble together my own travel agent education? If you have time to research and explore, you can really get to know a ton of information about the industry . . . for free! With this route, you’ll have nothing to show for it but your sharp brain. But if you want structured guidance, a curriculum, a degree or certificate, and predetermined educational benchmarks to meet, then a program might fit the bill.

You might still be uncertain. That’s okay because it’s not a cut-and-dry question. :)

We’ll review a few of the training agent training and education options that you can explore!

If you’re overwhelmed by travel agent training options, you’re not alone. Below we break it down into five main categories (with links in case you want to fast-forward to a particular option!):

1. Travel Agent Schools

2. Host Agency/ Consortia Education

3. Travel Agent Certification

4. Business and Sales Coaching

5. Other Industry Resources

We’ll give you a brief overview of each type of training, including what type of agent it might be good for. Most sections also include a link to a more in-depth look at that specific type of travel agent training and education program.

Let the rodeo begin!

1. Travel Agent Training: Travel Agent Schools

Read Complete Guide to Travel Agent Schools Article

1. What is their delivery format?

When it comes to travel agent training, travel agent schools typically offer degrees or professional certificates to those who want to become a travel agent. Most travel agent schools are online, though there are still a few rare birds out there that offer a classroom setting.

2. Is it for me?

Travel agent schools can be a great option if:

A.) you know you want to become a travel agent

B.) you are brand new to the industry with little or no professional background

C.) You want a degree (or professional certificate) in addition to an education.

If you are already setting up your business, don’t want a degree or professional certificate, and have already established a niche and know exactly what you want to do, a travel school might not be the right tool for the job. (Or at the very least, you may want to evaluate other options.)

3. What’s the end game?

It depends on the school, but typically a travel school will offer a broad (and hopefully in-depth) look at the travel agent sector of the travel industry. Some identify their main goal as preparing for the The Travel Institute's TAP (Travel Agent Proficiency) test, and most conclude with a degree or professional certificate. It's important to note that the TAP test is not required to become a travel agent.

4. How much do they cost?

There is a huge range and it will depend on how many credits you take and whether or not you also want a general degree. But the cost for travel agent training via the travel school route will range from $395 (for one course) to $14,000 (for degree-seeking programs)

5. How Long does it take?

The duration of a travel agent training program also varies widely. It depends on whether you want a degree, a professional certificate, or both. The programs listed in our travel agent school article range from two months to two years.

6. What are the prerequisites:

This will vary by program. However, if you want to receive a general degree you will likely need a high school diploma.

2. Travel Agent Training: Host Agency/ Consortia Education

Read A Guide to Host and Consortia Education Article

First things first: what is a host and what is a consortium? At its most basic, a host agency is an umbrella organization that an independent agency (that’s you!) can align with for better commissions , more support, and marketing/tech tools.

A travel consortium is a collective of host agencies, travel agencies, and/or travel advisors that join forces to combine resources in order to increase their industry footprint. This gives them more including buying potential, preferred supplier relationships, & commission levels.

Attending your specific host’s education program can be a really good primer. Why? Because it will also give you a good feel for their company culture and prepare you for their specific tools and technology.

Distilling travel agent training through host and consortia into a singular profile are almost impossible. Why? Well, we have hundreds of host agencies and consortia profiles on our site. Some of those hosts will have travel agent education programs, some won’t.

Among those that do offer programs, they may use different educational tools, systems delivery methods, etc. It’s mind-boggling! But this info will give you a sense of what’s out there before your plunge into specifics.

Host agencies and consortia offer every kind of education under the sun . . . that is, depending on what host you join!

Here’s just a few of the travel agent training formats they provide:

  • Online Education
  • Vendor training
  • Conference calls
  • Conventions or Meetings
  • FAM trips (when an agent visits a site/ destination)
  • Seminars at Sea
  • In-person training
  • Mentoring/ Coaching
  • Niche or destination education

Some hosts and consortia will require some form of education or comparable travel agent experience before you sign on with them. If you plan to go with a host agency, and you know you want travel agent education, their education programs might be a big determining factor for you.

Attending your specific host’s travel agent training program can be a really good primer. Why? Because it will also give you a good feel for their company culture and prepare you for their specific tools and technology.

However, if you want to join a host that has little or no educational support, then you may want to choose a different type of program to supplement your learning.

Also, some agents express that they don’t want to wait to complete a host’s education program before they’re able to book travel. So be sure to ask your shortlist of host agencies how soon you’ll be able to sell travel after signing on if this is a concern for you.

Not to sound like a broken record, but it depends. Different educational formats will have different goals.

Basic programs may familiarize you with a host agency and the industry at large. But a marketing-specific program might have goals like, “launch your travel agency website” or “increase your client list by 10%.”

Among hosts that offer travel agent training programs, 65% reported that their education fees are included in their startup or sign-on fees.

Among hosts that do “itemize” the cost for their education ranges from a low average of $2,135 to a high average of $2,475. Of the consortia who replied to our questionnaire, the cost ranged from zero to $150.

The cost of a host agency or consortia education program will depend on a few things including:

its intended participants (new or experienced agents),

the scope of content (is it general or specific), and

its duration (e.g. a one-off webinar vs. a week-long in-person intensive).

5. How long does it take?

Hosts' responses to how long their education program takes ranged from one day to 6 months (for a coaching program). Many hosts have self-paced programs. The consortia programs listed (in the link above) range from 30-50min. Per training module, to 12 weeks.

6. what are the prerequisites?

Aside from being an IC (independent contractor) under a host or consortium’s umbrella, there are no set prerequisites for new agent education. For more experienced agents or specialized training (such as a FAM), the education may be invite-only or include a sales threshold.

3. Travel Agent Training: Certification

Read Travel Agent Certification article

When it comes to travel agent training options, travel certifications are tricky to pin down. But here’s how we classify a travel certification:

  • Travel-specific (often focused on a certain type of travel or niche)
  • A comprehensive training program (not just a specific destination or vendor)
  • Education that is NOT provided by a vendor, destination, or travel agency

Most travel certifications result in giving you letters after your name (like ACC for “Accredited Cruise Counselor” or “VTA” for Verified Travel Advisor). This indicates to other industry professionals that you’re investing in yourself and your profession. (Most clients will not recognize a travel industry certification.)

Unlike a host or consortia program, most certifications culminate in a test you need to pass to be certified.

Unlike a degree or a professional certificate, many travel agent certifications must be maintained. What does this mean? It means that you’ll have to re-certify after a certain span of time.

Most certifications nowadays are online. Some also may include (or require) in-person conventions/training. Some are a mix of both.

At the end of the day, probably the best way to gauge whether or not a travel agent certification will be valuable to you and your business is to ask:

  • Will it further my knowledge?
  • Is this certification recognized by other industry professionals?
  • Does it open doors for me? (e.g. with some certifications, it allows you to be listed in an organization’s travel agent database for consumers to find.)

Some certifications are more niche-specific, and some are more general. Many travel agent certification organizations have tiers that range from beginning to experienced agents.

Aside from (hopefully) gaining knowledge, a travel agent certification culminates in industry recognition (letters after your name).

4. How much does Travel agent certification cost?

Among the travel certifications we list on our site the cost ranges from $70 - $550 ( which would not include travel expenses ).

Depending on the rigor of the travel agent training program, the amount of time to become certified ranges from 3 months to 2 years.

6. What are the prerequisites?

Entry-level certifications usually don’t have any strict prerequisites. If a travel agent training program has “tiered” certifications, you will need to complete them before you move on to the more advanced certifications. Some of the more advanced travel agent certifications also require you to meet a certain sales threshold.

Some travel organizations require that you’re a member if you want to certify through them. Also, some certifications are facilitated by travel organizations (like the American Society of Travel Advisors, ASTA or Cruise Lines International Association, CLIA ). If this is the case, you’ll need to be an affiliate or member of their organization.

4. Travel Agent Training: Business and Sales Coaching

Travel Agent Training and Education – Business Coaching

These types of travel agent training programs are run by industry professionals—travel advisors, travel industry writers, agency owners etc.

Many times, these programs focus on a specific type of travel such as destination weddings or FITs. Many of them also include an element of coaching or mentoring.

If they offer certification, these are not generally recognized in the wider industry or by consumers.

A few that come to mind (if we missed some, let us know in the comments) :

  • 20K System & Toolkit Destination Wedding Business Course: This course, created by Destination Wedding planner Tami Santini, addresses how to build a six-figure income while working with 5 to 10 couples per year. (Cost is $2,997 Tami is offering HAR readers 50% off which you can get by following this link . Full disclosure , this is an affiliate link, and will help the HAR crew feed our office dogs if you use it!)
  • Romance Travel University, by DWHSA (Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Association): Offers niche-focused boot camps and events as well as an annual conference.
  • Travel Beyond the Obvious : Developed by destination expert and agency owner of Italy Beyond the Obvious. Training focuses on developing in-depth destination expertise (for any destination). ($299 per course, $2,499 for complete training)

Who better to learn from than people who have gone through it and succeeded? If there’s a program that fits your niche, the price is reasonable, and you like the person who runs it then I’d seriously consider it as a contender.

5. Travel Agent Training: Other Industry Resources

Oh no. Just when you thought you exhausted all travel agent training possibilities I throw in an “other” category. But here’s the deal: There’s a ton of other travel agent training opportunities out there if you have the patience to cobble together your own schooling!

Going the "other" route is great for DIY-loving newbies who may want to test the waters before investing in a travel agent training or education program. It’s also great for you if you just want a quick refresher in a specific niche, supplier, or type of travel.

Here’s some of what’s out there:

HAR’s 7 Day Setup Accelerator course

Destination/ Supplier Training & Webinars

It will come as no surprise to you that suppliers want you to be successful in selling their products and destinations. Want to get connected to a webinar? Check out what’s happening on HAR’s event calendar , for free training and webinar options.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Check a supplier’s website, Facebook group, or social profile to see what they’re cooking (and then tell them to post it for free on our events page).

Industry Conferences & Events

Most industry conferences and events aren’t free, and you can quickly wrack up a steep bill with travel and lodging expenses. But these events can be an invaluable educational resource. Good events connect you with suppliers, provide educational panels, offer ample networking opportunities.

Want to go the extra mile? You can also tack on a cruise ship inspection or resort/hotel site inspection .

Here's a few tips on how to make the most out of a travel conference .

ASTA's ROADMAP TO BECOMING A TRAVEL ADVISOR COURSE

It's worth noting that ASTA's Roadmap to Becoming a Travel Advisor course was written by HAR's founder, Steph Lee. With 240 pages of goodness, the focus is on helping you understand how the travel industry works, who the players are and what they do, and what a career as a travel advisors entails.

If you're looking for travel agent training that is like a Becoming a Travel Advisor 101 college course, where you get big picture of how things work and a taste of what a career in that field is like, you'll like this course!

In each of our linked travel agent training articles above, we go into more detail on how to evaluate specific types of travel agent education and training.

But if you really want to go the extra mile before you commit, here are a few extra steps you can take:

  • Talk to agents who've taken the program. Ask the program director for emails of a few agents who have gone through the program (though most likely they will direct you to agents who have nothing but good things to say about it). Another good place to check? Travel Agent Facebook groups. If you’re interested in HAR’s 7 Day Setup (7DS) program, join our 7DS Facebook group and snoop around.
  • Ask for a sample course. Probably the best way to see if a travel agent training program is good for you is to try it out. Ask the program if you can do a sample class or take a look at a recent syllabus. (They don’t have one?! Yikes!)
  • Who runs the program? A travel agent training program will only be as good as the people “in front of the room.” Who runs the program? What is their industry experience? Who teaches the classes and how much real-life travel experience do they have? Another important question, how recent is their experience on the topic they're teaching?
  • Ask for data. Nothing speaks louder than actions (errr, data). So what does their data tell you? How many agents complete travel agent training through the program? Do the agents find jobs? Do their sales increase? If the program boasts increased lead generation, do they have the numbers to back it up?
  • Spy on their alumnus: Actions speak louder than words: Poke around on Linkedin or Facebook to see what career path alumnus followed after they complete that travel agent training program.

Let’s Wind Up

Ride into the Sunset

I’m not going to lie. I’m impressed that you made it this far. You’ve conquered the Wild West of travel agent training and education and training opportunities.

It’s time to mosey on: drop a comment below about you personal experiences with travel agent training programs, or give me a holler at [email protected]

How to Become a Travel Agent—Because, Believe It or Not, the Industry Is on the Rise

By Scott Bay

How to Become a Travel Agent—Because Believe It or Not the Industry Is on the Rise

There’s a reason “how to become a travel agent” has been a continuously trending search phrase on Google—it is a career path that offers a flexible work environment and schedule, ample travel opportunities, and an immersion into a supportive world-wide industry. It's a surprise to some in 2023: Once the internet became widely available, it was largely believed that needing a travel agent was obsolete. However, even though the brick-and-mortar agencies with punny names in strip malls have vanished, the career is on-the-rise .

New software options are making it easier than ever for people to make money planning trips, either as a side hustle or as a full-time business. That’s why Cherikonda, India-based stay-at-home mother, Maya Kapoor-Miller, decided to enter the professional world as a travel agent this year, at 31. “I knew nothing about the travel industry prior to signing up,” says Kapoor-Miller, who decided to use San Francisco-based booking platform Dreamport to establish her online travel advisor business. “It is my first business in life, and the only one that you can start with no investment.”

But there's also a rise in demand. When people ventured back into the world after the pandemic, travel agents saw an overwhelming amount of business . And that momentum hasn’t stopped—when travel is complicated, like it was in 2020 and 2021, travelers turned to professional trip planners to create a seamless vacation. For better or worse, traveling has remained complicated and chaotic, with new rules being implemented (like Americans needing to pay a fee to visit Europe in 2024 ) and airline strikes and staffing issues. Offloading all of the nitty-gritty details to someone else is more appealing than ever.

For those entering the field, there's also the age-old motivator: a love of travel.

Shelton Ellis, who is based in North Carolina, recently saw these opportunities and left behind more than 20 years in public relations and global advertising to turn his passion into a career. “I was born with a wanderlust that would wear Rick Steves out,” Ellis says. “I decided to take the leap and follow that lifelong yearning. Transitioning into this role was really about learning how to monetize what I'm passionate about.”

Whether you are looking for a new career path or a lucrative side-hustle—or simply curious about those taking the plunge—here’s how to become a travel agent, from the qualifications and education required, to anticipated earnings, according to those who have made the shift in the past year.

What exactly does a travel agent do?

Travel agents, or travel advisors (the term is mostly interchangeable), manage everything that goes into a trip for their clients: the flights, car transfers, accommodations, restaurant reservations, and more—they even inspire the itinerary. The reason people turn to travel agents, aside from having a helping hand during any travel chaos , is also to tap into the travel agent’s first-hand knowledge of destinations, and their industry partnerships, which often lead to perks such as hotel upgrades, ideal airplane seats, and experiences that can’t be found on a search engine.

“You have to remember that as a travel agent, you will be a guide for people during their happiest moments—family reunions, weddings , baptisms, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that people have dreamt of,” says Kapoor-Miller. “It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a travel agent. You navigate people, inform them, and help them choose.”

So, how do you become a travel agent?

There are many ways to become a travel agent, from joining an existing travel agency , to starting an independent business from the ground up. Others are opting for one of the buzziest start-ups in the travel industry, Fora . When it launched in 2021, the software company, which trains and provides search engine-optimized profile pages to advisors—at one point had a waitlist of over 30,000 people eager to begin a part-time gig. Travel photographer and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Amanda Villarosa is currently in the process of joining.

“I'm the person that friends and family come to for travel recommendations, tips and tricks, and general travel advice,” says Villarosa. “After discovering Fora and looking into it, I realized that it could be the perfect side-hustle, considering I'm already so involved in the industry.”

With additional flexibility, Villarosa was able to move from New York City to splitting her time between Denver and Los Angeles . She says that the sign-up was quite straightforward. “You're given a dedicated Fora email and have access to advising tools and fellow Fora advisors,” she says. “The training is in the form of Zoom meetings and videos, which you have the option to watch at your own pace. Once completed, you take a certification quiz and you're on your way to advising.”

The other ways in are slightly more involved. To begin an independent practice, you go about it like many other businesses. You will have to create an LLC, establish a business name, cultivate marketing materials, build a website, find clientele, and more.

Ellis found something in the middle, choosing to connect with an established travel agency. “Don't be afraid to reach out to an agency looking to take on new advisors and is willing to mentor," says Ellis. "I was fortunate to learn so much from Annie Chambers, the owner of Crafted Escapes , who has seven years in the business.” He now knows the ropes on everything from using itinerary-building software to destination-specific training, to the sales and marketing aspects of the trade.

Is there required education or qualifications?

Ellis says that there's no certification, per se, required to become a travel advisor, but there are countless training courses available like Departure Lounge ’s classes on navigating the industry through hotels and tour operators. He said it’s also important to stay on top of travel trends. Ellis recently completed travel agent training programs provided by premier cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages , Ritz-Carlton Yachts , and Cunard to help agents sell their products more accurately.

How much does a travel agent make?

What a travel agent earns depends on how many trips they successfully book for their clients. The entire model is commission-based, meaning agents earn a percentage of the total cost of the vacation they orchestrate. Many travel advisors choose to charge a flat-rate planning fee in addition to their commission, but balance is key—if you charge a high planning fee, it could lead to potential clients going elsewhere.

Fora ’s website states that “some of our full-time, expert advisors earn well into the six figures (or beyond).” So a lucrative career may be on the horizon, for those who are able to build a robust client base and excellent industry connections.

How much you make can also depend on where you live around the world. “I am being paid in dollars,” says India-based Kapoor-Miller. “So the currency fluctuations of the local exchange rate are not something I am worried about.”

What are the key skills required to become a travel agent?

“Travel agents need a mix of customer service, communication, destination knowledge, organizational, and problem-solving skills,” says Kapoor-Miller. “But I would say that adaptability, flexibility, curiosity, and cultural sensitivity top them all—you have to put yourself in other's shoes, and understand the requirements, hopes, and expectations of your clients along with any worries and questions they may have.”

It’s vital to have a passion for traveling, even the aspects of the process that aren’t as exciting, such as learning about new airline routes, train schedule updates, and industry news. “It can be an information-heavy hustle, and I believe it's important to be excited about it as that energy definitely transfers to your clients and partners,” Villarosa says.

Should travel advisors choose a specialization?

Many travel advisors have found success through becoming an expert in a few types of travel and destinations. “It's important to become an authority and learn as much as you can through personal experiences and continuing education,” says Ellis. “As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community , an avid snow skier, and scuba diver, I know not only the popular destinations but others that are off the beaten path, equally safe and adventurous for all travelers.” This helps travel agents establish a competitive edge, and hopefully convince potential clients to choose them for their expertise.

What are the benefits of being a travel agent?

“Flexibility tops them all,” says Kapoor-Miller. “And the ability to start without industry knowledge. If you worry that you are too old for this job, the good news is that this is a job you can enter and enjoy at any age.”

Another great perk is the "Familiarization trip,” says Ellis. “Tourism boards and hotels invite agents to visit and familiarize themselves with a particular country and its properties. After all, any accomplished salesperson should learn everything they can about their products first-hand...even if they're in Bora Bora.” It's hard work, but someone's got to do it.

Uk National Rail Analytics Dashboard : MAVEN RAIL CHALLENGE

SASMITA SAHOO Avatar

About this project

Project overview.

The aim of this project is to make a BI dashboard to assist National Rail in making informed decisions by presenting clear visualizations of key performance indicators (KPIs) impacting efficiency and revenue generation. Here the dataset contains mock train ticket sales data from January to April 2024, including details on ticket types, booking times, travel dates, departure and arrival stations, ticket prices, and more.

undefined

Business Needs & Goals

  • Identify Most Popular Routes:

Identify routes that generate high revenue to enhance and market effectively.

  • Analyze Peak Travel Times:

Understand travel patterns to manage capacity and improve service during high-demand periods.

  • Revenue Distribution by Ticket Type and Class:

Break down revenue sources to optimize pricing strategies for profitability.

4. Improve On-Time Performance:

Identify and mitigate factors causing delays and cancellations, particularly on popular routes.

Data Insights

1. most popular routes:.

  • Highest Ticket Sales and Revenue:

The route from Manchester Piccadilly to Liverpool Lime Street sold the most tickets , with a total of 4,628. Despite its popularity among travelers, this route did not yield the highest revenue. Instead, the route from London Kings Cross to York generated the most revenue of 183 k.

  • Station Preferences:

Manchester Piccadilly stands out as the busiest departure point, reflecting its main role as a transportation hub in the North. Conversely, Birmingham New Street is the popular arrival destination station which can be called as a central node in the rail network.

This highlights the necessity for National Rail to balance ticket volume with revenue generation strategies, especially when promoting and enhancing services along these popular routes.

undefined

2. Peak Travel Times:

  • Busiest Times:

Peak travel times are from 6-8 AM and 4-7 PM. These times coincide with daily commutes, indicating higher passenger volumes during morning and evening rush hours. Passenger density is highest during typical commute hours, reflecting the demand for travel to and from work.

This consistent pattern underscores the need for efficient service during these peak times to accommodate the high volume of travelers.

3. Booking Patterns:

  • Purchasing mode: 58.5% of bookings are made online, and 41.4% at the station.
  • Payment Methods: Credit cards are the preferred payment mode, used for 60.5% of transactions.
  • Booking Preferences: Most bookings are made in advance, with a preference for standard travel class. Weekdays are the preferred booking period.

The shift towards digital platforms is evident, with a majority of bookings made online. Credit card payments dominate, showing customer preference for convenience. Adults tend to book at the station, possibly due to immediate travel needs. Advanced bookings and standard class travel are highest, especially during weekdays.

4. On-Time Performance:

The overall on-time performance is 86.8% from where10.9% of trips are delayed, and 5.9% are canceled.

Manchester Piccadilly to Liverpool Lime Street has the highest cancellation rate.

Delays range from under 30 minutes to over 3 hours, with the most delayed routes being Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston.

Weather is the primary cause of delays, accounting for 40%. Signal issues are the main cause of cancellations.

Weather and technical issues significantly impact service reliability. The Manchester Piccadilly to Liverpool Lime Street route suffers from the highest cancellations, while delays are most frequent on the Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston route, particularly in March due to adverse weather conditions.

undefined

5. Total Revenue:

Total revenue : 742 K

Total Refunds: 107K

Revenue by Ticket Type:

Standard class tickets generate 80% of total revenue (593K). "Advance" tickets contribute 32.67% of total revenue (242K), "Anytime" tickets 23.11% (171K), and "Off-peak" tickets 24.08% (179K). Narrative: Financial performance is influenced by significant discounts, especially for anytime travel. Routes like London Kings Cross to York and London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street benefit the most from discounts. High refunds in January point to potential service issues during this period.

The dominance of standard class and advance bookings suggests a preference for cost-effective travel options.

undefined

Recommendations:

Improving high Revenue Routes: By focusing on improving and marketing routes that generate the most revenue, such as London Kings Cross to York. Enhancing services and targeted promotions can attract more passengers and increase profitability.

Enhancing Digital and Advance Bookings: Developing advertisement and promotions for the use of railcard and encourage advance bookings. Offering discounts or loyalty programs can attract frequent travelers and improve revenue.

Improving Infrastructure and Staffing: Addressing the causes of delays and cancellations, particularly on high-revenue routes. Enhancing infrastructure, increasing staff, and implementing plans for adverse weather conditions can improve service reliability.

Managing Peak Travel Times: Adding more trains or carriages during peak hours to accommodate high passenger volumes. Ensuring sufficient staffing during these times can improve the overall travel experience.

Buffett's NetJets sues pilots' union for defamation over safety, training claims

(Reuters) -NetJets, the luxury plane unit of billionaire Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc, sued its 3,400-member pilots union for defamation over statements about its commitment to safety and training pilots.

The lawsuit filed in a state court in Columbus, Ohio, where NetJets is based, seeks unspecified damages, and follows years of often contentious relations between the company and the NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots.

"NJASAP stands by the concerns we have raised about pilot training and the safety and maintenance cultures--concerns that have only increased in intensity in recent months," the union's president Pedro Leroux said on Wednesday. "We view the lawsuit as an attempt to silence us."

NetJets declined to discuss the lawsuit on Thursday, but said "our focus is on providing the exceptional safety and service our owners expect and deserve."

The company employs "fractional" ownership, which lets people buy shares of private planes and travel on short notice.

Buffett flies on NetJets planes, and in 2015 told Berkshire shareholders "we have no anti-union agenda whatsoever."

In Monday's lawsuit, NetJets accused its union of making false and defamatory statements through press releases, newspaper ads and social media to damage its reputation with customers, employees and the public.

These included suggestions that NetJets cared more about saving money than safety, used a defective flight planning system that could send aircraft into dangerous weather, and employed many new unqualified or inadequately trained pilots.

The company also objected to a Jan. 26, 2024 ad in the Wall Street Journal that referenced the recent mid-air cabin panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 and said: "NetJets Owners: What if you looked out your window and saw a panel of the plane?"

NetJets does not fly Boeing aircraft.

In April 2023, the union sued NetJets for allegedly interfering with its communications about contract negotiations.

A federal judge in Columbus dismissed that case in January, saying he lacked jurisdiction and that NetJets "has not struck a fundamental blow to the union."

Berkshire, based in Omaha, Nebraska, employed 396,440 people at year end, including 8,349 at NetJets. Most are not unionized.

The case is NetJets Inc et al v NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots, Court of Common Pleas, Franklin County, Ohio, No. 24CV004374.

The Aesthetic Foundation Presidential Update May 2024

A generic silhouette of a person.

I am incredibly proud to be President of the rebranded, The Aesthetic Foundation! Like I said at the Business Meeting in Vancouver, Caroline Glicksman certainly set me up for success with all the progress of her year, and I know working with President-Elect, Pat McGuire, and the whole Foundation Board will lead to another year of growth and impact on our specialty. Thanks to the new website ( https://www.theaestheticfoundation.org /) I plan to focus on initiatives to create more widespread awareness and support for The Foundation and the work we do.

In speaking with colleagues around the country, it has become clear to me that many did not know what ASERF is or does. Changing the name to The Aesthetic Foundation and modernizing the website were the first steps in the process to change this.

Our new name well describes our involvement in Aesthetic Surgery/Medicine; however the membership should be aware that The Aesthetic Foundation frequently funds education and research on breast cancer and post-mastectomy reconstruction topics. Over the past few years, The Foundation has launched new programs and funds to server a wide breadth of our specialty and our patients:

RESEARCH GRANTS:

At the core of so much of what The Aesthetic Foundation does revolves around the funding of research. The Scientific Research Committee and Board will consider budget requests for projects of any amount. Much of the research funded results in publications in Aesthetic Society Journal . As you can see below, the list of topics covered is diverse and easy to search. More Info

JAMES STUZIN AESTHETIC EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARD:

This year, it's important for me to spread the word about digitally registering breast implants with our FDA-recognized app, Aesthetic One. This free resource makes implant registration easy and secure, allowing instant sharing of ID cards with patients and ensuring unmatched accuracy and reliability through ARISE, The American Registry for Breast Implant Surveillance.

With faxing registrations soon to be phased out, now if the perfect time to make the switch to electronic registration for a safer, more informed future. You can sign-up today for this free resource or schedule a personal demo to see it in action. I look forward to the year ahead and continuing to champion The Foundation and the work we do!
