Best Time to Visit Canada: Month by Month Breakdown

Canada is a popular country to visit any time of the year, but it can be a very different travel experience depending on the season that you choose to visit.

Summer is peak season in Canada when the weather is at its best. Winter is cold, snowy and icy, but it’s the perfect time for skiing and snowboarding. Spring and autumn are lovely and come with fewer crowds, but the weather can be unpredictable.

The best time to visit Canada will depend on what activities you’re looking to enjoy, and how many other tourists you don’t mind sharing that experience with.

Canada Summer Months

Summer is the most popular time of the year to visit Canada. For hikers and outdoor lovers, this is the best time to visit Canada, for the simple reason that you can guarantee the hiking trails will be open.

There are lots of festivals and events too in summer, and it’s a great time for a road trip.

June in Canada

June is the start of the summer high season, and this is when Canada starts to get busy as tourists begin to flock in for road trips and to explore the national parks. 

June is still a good time to avoid the worst of the crowds, which tend to arrive in July and August when many countries are in the midst of their school holidays.

In June, take to popular places like Banff and Jasper, and the wider Canadian Rockies and make the most of the newly opened hiking trails and the resurgent wildlife.  

July in Canada

July is busy, but that’s because weather-wise this is the best time to visit Canada. In the far north, you can enjoy endless hours of sunshine in offbeat destinations such as Edmonton or Whitehorse. 

While other travelers will head to the Canadian Rockies or Vancouver, in the Arctic Circle, you’ll find a fraction of the tourist numbers.

Get off the beaten track in July, and enjoy a unique experience without the crowds in the north.

July is also a great time for city hopping, like Montreal, Calgary and Toronto all throw big summer festivals through July to make the most of the sunshine. 

August in Canada

August will be just as busy as July across the country, but again, weather-wise this is one of the best times to visit Canada. 

The sun is still shining, and this is the last month of the year where you can guarantee the good weather before autumn arrives.

Go on a road trip in British Columbia, and take in the epic Sea to Sky Highway, or take the road more traveled and drive the Banff to Jasper Highway, along the Icefields Parkway.

But remember, that Canada is a vast country, and if you’re looking to travel off the beaten track and find secluded places, then it’s never too hard to do this away from the major tourist trails.

Head off hiking, climb mountain peaks and camp out in the wild through Autumn. 

Canada Fall Months

Fall is a shoulder season when it comes to the best time to visit Canada, but if you’re looking to escape the summer crowds then there isn’t a better time to visit.

Prices are lower and popular attractions aren’t nearly as busy, but the weather can be unpredictable. 

September in Canada

Fall comes around all too quickly in Canada, but September will still see good weather across the country. Just be prepared for a bit of unpredictability.

On the plus side though, towards the end of September, the colors will be Autumnal, and the outdoors is still as beautiful as ever.

September is a good time to make the most of lower prices and smaller crowds after the summer rush has ended.

Vancouver is still positively hot if you’re looking for sunshine, and there are some great national parks nearby, as well as epic road trips from the west coast city and into the wilderness of British Columbia. 

Visit top tourist sights such as Banff and Jasper, take the Rocky Mountain train, or gaze ina we at the crashing force of Niagra Falls from the Canadian side. 

October in Canada

October is the middle of Fall, and it’s the best time to visit Canada if you’re in search of those golden, red and yellow shades of natural beauty.

It can rain a lot in October, so be prepared for wet weather, but in the moments of sunshine, the outdoors radiates gloriously.

Hiking trails will already start to close down in many destinations, but travel to British Columbia and you’ll find that the warmer climate keeps places open and busier for longer than other areas such as the Rockies. 

November in Canada

November is the last month of Autumn, but in many places, it will already feel as if it’s been winter for a long time. 

If you’re after low prices and small crowds, then there isn’t a better time to visit Canada than in November.

The weather is bound to be unpredictable and in many places, it’s going to be snowing already. 

You can catch early deals at ski resorts if there’s been enough snowfall. Or you can enjoy the best of Canada’s cities, and make the most of the museums and galleries while soaking up the culture in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. 

Canada Winter Months

Winter is the time for snowsports across Canada because this is a country that gets very cold between December and February.

The ski resorts will be full over winter, with peak season falling over Christmas and through to the New Year. 

December in Canada

In December, it’s the real start of the ski season in popular destinations such as Whistler and Banff. With lots of snowfall and the Christmas holidays, this is a great time to be in Canada if you love festivities and snow sports.

If you want to go skiing though, then make sure that you book in advance, because this is peak season.

The cities hold Christmas events all through December, and with all the museums still open through winter, it’s a great chance to escape the cold and to explore urban Canada. 

January in Canada

January is a cold time of the year to be in Canada, and you need to be prepared for the icy chill of the Canadian winter wherever you are.

After the Christmas rush, things slow down, so this is a good time to get a few good deals at the ski resorts, or least to hit the slopes without so many other tourists around.

If you are looking for a unique experience, then why not consider heading into the Arctic Circle?

The remote north of Canada is becoming more popular and more accessible, even in winter, and there are endless opportunities for dog sledding, husky safaris and seeing the colorful Northern Lights in the night sky. 

Travel can be unpredictable in January, due to the weather, but heading north is well worth the effort if you have the time and patience. 

February in Canada

February is a great time for skiing in Canada, as the ski slopes will be in great shape by now.

It’s never too busy either, except on the weekends, and you’ll be able to get low season prices on both hotels and flights.

If skiing isn’t your thing though, then you can head north into the Arctic Circle to search for the Northern Lights.

Or you can stick to the cities and enjoy the warmth of Canada’s many great museums, bars, galleries, and restaurants instead of braving the chilly outdoors. 

Canada Spring Months

Spring is a slow starter in Canada, and winter can linger for a long time, particularly if you head further north.

The weather can be unpredictable, and it’s not a good time for hiking as many of the trails are still closed.

Life is returning to Canada though after a tough winter, and it can be a beautiful time for wildlife spotting.

March in Canada

March is a slow month when it comes to travel, but that does mean you can take full advantage of low prices and small crowds. 

This is the start of spring, but it will still feel a lot like winter in many places, particularly if you travel further north.

Warmer locations such as Vancouver are beginning to bloom into life, while the national parks will have plenty of wildlife sightings as bears and other animals begin to slowly emerge.

April in Canada

April can be quiet, although there will be a mini-high season over the Easter Holidays.

The weather is unpredictable, but expect it to be cold in most locations, with the odd sunny day as summer begins to arrive – slowly.

April is quite often the last month of the ski season, so head to Whistler or the Rockies for more snowsport action before summer arrives and the snow melts.

May in Canada

May is when the weather will finally begin to turn for the better across Canada, and this can be a fantastic time to explore the country. 

If you love your snowsports, then some ski resorts will still be open, and you can find some end of season deals.

If you love national parks, then many of the hiking trails and campsites are beginning to open – although this varies each year, so check in advance. 

The best thing is, you miss the summer crowds in May and get those great low season prices!

Canada in March starts waking up from freezer-like temperatures, ushering in warmer days ahead. Though still cold, a spring-like promise hangs in the air. Those looking to try snow sports like skiing or snowboarding can still enjoy the powder rush in the Rockies. However, milder temperatures and thawing conditions make coastal British Columbia a better tourist spot. Whether it’s skiing, hiking, or whale watching, a trip to Canada in March offers a well-rounded holiday experience.

There’s little doubt Canada in March is chilly, with temperatures averaging 3°C or 37°F. You can also expect to see a lot of snow. Coastal areas such as Vancouver sees warmer temperatures in March, with average highs of 10°C (50°F) and lows of 4°C (39°F). Places in eastern Canada such as Quebec City have an average maximum of 1°C (34°F) and see minimum temperature of -7°C (19°F). Calgary, which lies in the western side of Canada, has a maximum temperature of 5°C (34°F) and minimum of 4°C (39°F). As the month progresses, early spring weather kicks in with lovely sunshine and longer daylight hours.

• Fewer crowds: The crowd in March is generally smaller than during the peak season. This means you get more opportunities to enjoy Canada’s attractions and nature.
• Winter sports: Resorts in Quebec City, Alberta and the like remain open in March, so you can enjoy a plethora of winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding and more.
• Festivals: A great tourist attraction in March is the Snowking Winter Festival that runs throughout the month in Yellowknife. The festival organizers collaborate with the Chief Drygeese Territory in the Akaitcho region to create a snow castle that rivals Disneyland.
• Northern lights: March is one of the most ideal months to chase the mesmerizing Northern Lights in Canada. The town of Churchill in Manitoba province and Yukon Territory are two of the best places to see the Northern Lights.  

Where to go and what to do

Take a tour of Quebec City to enjoy more than three hundred years of architecture, as some buildings date back to the 17th century. Coastal British Columbia is also perfect for visiting in March, as the climate is milder than other parts of Canada. Visit Vancouver to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of festivals and events, such as the Vancouver International Dance Festival and the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.

Head toward the Great Bear Rainforest , located northwest of Vancouver, to marvel at the sheer grandeur of the world's largest coastal temperate rainforest. Notably, this remarkable region is home to the enigmatic white Kermode bear, fondly known as the "spirit bear”. Set up camp in the vibrant town of Bella Coola, offering modern facilities and guided tours that pave the way into the heart of this mesmerizing rainforest. March is also an excellent time to go on a whale watching tour in Vancouver Island, off the Pacific coast.

What to bring

The March weather in Canada is pleasant but still chilly in the morning and at night, so you need layers. If you’re skiing, snowboarding or snowshoeing, you’ll have all the kit — it’s possible to buy goggles and a hat on the slopes if you lose yours. In town, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Spring in Canada: Destinations & Travel Tips

Canada experiences all four seasons, and each season brings in a different look, and vibe, if you will. If you are heading to Canada in the springtime, you will find this post helpful. We have included everything from travel tips, packing list to temperatures and epic destinations to visit in spring in Canada.

Spring in Canada: Springtime activities, months & temperature

When does spring start in Canada?

So when does the spring season start in Canada. Our spring months are from March to May. Canada is the second largest country by area, so expect a variation in temperatures, and sightseeing activities.

Typically with the advent of March, the temperatures are a bit warmer, and in various areas, you can expect the snow to melt. The melting of snow means the roads and sidewalks are muddier, slushier, and you can no longer indulge in winter sports like skiing or enjoy skating in natural ice rinks/frozen lakes. Spring skiing is possible in only a handful of resorts. 

Many destinations on the west coast area like Victoria, Vancouver Island experience milder temperatures and you can enjoy lovely walks in the gardens, go whale watching and participate in outdoor activities from hiking, biking, and light strolls.

Canada seasons temperatures by region

• East/Central Canada – In major cities like Toronto and Montreal (provinces of Quebec and Ontario), temperatures are still colder at a high of 53 F (11 C), and a low of 34 F (1 C). So in March and April, these provinces are still hungover from the winter cold. From May onwards, the temperatures are warmer. Being huge provinces, you can expect variations.
• Western Canada – In the extreme west end of the country, along the Pacific Ocean coastline, expect spring to come in early. Cities like Vancouver, Victoria, and Vancouver Island are perfect for a spring break. Temperatures hover around 55 F (13 C) and low of 41 F (5 C). On average, these places receive 10-12 days of rain. When you travel to Whistler or Yoho National Park in the Canadian Rockies in BC, there is still snowfall in April and into late May. 
• Prairies – The provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta are called the Canadian Prairies. We have lived in 2 of the provinces and traveled to all 3. Winters here are harsher as compared to east/central Canada, and average temperatures are around 48 F (9 C) high, and a low of 27 F (minus 3 C). During our 6+ year stay in Alberta we have experienced super mild winters, and extreme ones too, and that reflects the spring temperatures. In our 4.5 year stay in Saskatchewan, spring had been delayed by many months, and in one year spring didn’t even arrive, it was summer already from winter. Spring kicks in from May and is usually warm in the summers/crossover months.
• Maritimes/ Atlantic Region – On the Atlantic coast, milder temperatures are felt from April onwards. Nova Scotia usually has a slightly earlier spring than the rest of the Atlantic region. Halifax in April experiences a high of 48 F (9 C), and a low of 34 F (1 C).
• Northern Canada – In the northern territories, the spring season is very short. But they move swiftly to summer with the spring equinox, and you can experience the midnight sun here in the summer months. 

Festivals to enjoy in Canada in the springtime

During the months of March, April, and May , there are 2 – 3 statutory holidays where residents enjoy 3 day long weekends. In the month of March, St Patrick’s Day is celebrated, although this is not a stat holiday, you can expect restaurants and bars to be all decked up in clovers and pretty green color. 

In April, Good Friday and Easter are statutory holidays (some employers provide both days as holidays, some provide either one, as a stat day off). Canadians commonly refer to Easter as the period from Good Friday through Easter Monday.

So celebrations and gatherings culminate on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Sunday Monday, which mark the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Although a religious festival, many celebrate with treats and candies. Children especially, look forward to receiving chocolate bunnies, and other gifts on Easter. Decorating Easter eggs is also a fun activity. Easter egg hunts are organized, where people look for eggs hidden outdoors. 

In May, we celebrate Victoria Day, to honor Queen Victoria. It is a federal holiday that occurs on the last Monday preceding May 25. It was initially held/celebrated in honor of Queen Victoria’s birthday and has been observed since 1845. 

Fun fact : Queen Victoria ruled Great Britain and Ireland for most of the 19th century. Victoria Day also marks the beginning of the summer season in Canada.

Reasons to visit Canada in spring

Canada is one of those countries where every season has its little flavor that is worth exploring. We plan a lot of domestic travel during the spring and fall months in Canada, which are off-seasons. Here are some of the reasons for planning a trip to Canada in the spring,

Off season: Cheaper Accommodation & fewer crowds

Spring months are off-season in Canada. If you are hoping to explore the Canadian Rockies or the urban landmarks in cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, you can score cheaper accommodation and flight deals. 

Unlike summer, tourist attractions are not super crowded, making it one of the best times to visit Canada prior to the summer madness. Ideally late April and early May is the perfect sweet spot to enjoy walks and hikes outside, and explore museums, and attend festivals.

Sightseeing in Spring in Canada

Just like elsewhere in the world, Canada kicks in the cherry blossom season in March and April in Vancouver. Toronto celebrates the season towards the end of April to May. 

Ottawa, Canada’s capital city celebrates the world’s largest tulip festival in May. Canada and the Netherlands share a deep bond, where the former provided refuge to the Royal family during World War II. And the Dutch Royalty thanked Canada by sending in thousands of tulip bulbs.

Whale watching season also begins in spring. From March onwards, Tofino in British Columbia, and Tadoussac, Quebec kick in whale watching tours. 

Hiking starts in many parks in the urban centres, and provincial parks. In the Canadian Rockies expect some trails and roads to be closed up until the beginning of May. Lake Louise will be half frozen, so although you can’t skate, their ski resorts might be open for spring skiing . Whistler Blackcomb has snow well into May, and you can go skiing there as well.

Victoria, british columbia.

City breaks | Whale Watching day tour | Culture & Museum | Gardens | Festivals 

Enjoy spring in one of the prettiest cities in Canada, and the capital of the province of British Columbia – Victoria. Named after Queen Victoria, this city is super compact and is filled with cultural delights. Perfect for a spring weekend away, you can expect warm temperatures and gardens in full bloom. 

As part of your Victoria itinerary, visit the Butchart Gardens, the Legislature buildings, and the waterfront area. You can attend a performance at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, or learn more of the city’s history at the Royal BC Museum.

This city is not only known as the ‘city of gardens’, it is also an amazing foodie destination. Enjoy a lovely brunch or coffee at a downtown cafe, or join a food tour in the city. 

Victoria is also a perfect base to explore more of Vancouver Island. Embark on a day trip to Tofino, and enjoy whale watching on BC’s shores. 

Vancouver, British Columbia

City break | Cherry Blossom Festival | Foodie destination | Day trip to the mountains

Vancouver is one of our favorite cities in Canada. Located in BC, Vancouver experiences milder temperatures in the spring but does get a lot of rain. Spring is off-season in Vancouver, so you can score a nice hotel or an Airbnb in downtown Vancouver for 20-30% lower than normal.

Sightseeing bus tours and downtown lanes see fewer crowds, and you can easily go exploring Vancouver covering the landmark attractions such as the waterfront area, Stanley Park, Olympic Cauldron, ChinaTown, Sun Yat Sen Gardens, and pigging out at the Granville Island. 

In April and May, Vancouver is sprinkled with cherry blossoms. And there is a Cherry Blossom Festival to celebrate the season if you are in the city at that time. 

Vancouver is perfect for a weekend break. We do recommend carrying a warm cardigan, and a waterproof jacket/trench coat as it could rain on most days in the city. 

From Vancouver, you can enjoy a day trip or a weekend stay at the mountain resort town of Whistler. Ski resorts are open until May here. 

Calgary and Canadian Rockies, Alberta

If you are planning a visit to the Canadian Rockies, spring is a good time to visit. It is a crossover season where the parks experience fewer crowds, accommodation is cheaper, and visitors can enjoy some of the summer and winter activities.

Spring hiking is possible on certain trails (near Banff town, Canmore and Kananaskis, and Lake Louise). Sunshine and Lake Louise Ski Resort are open until May for skiing. 

For those looking for slow travel, or romantic weekends away, the Canadian Rockies in the spring is a perfect time. Restaurants in Banff town are not crowded, and you can easily book a nice spa and stay at the Banff Springs Hotel.

A lot of our visitors ask us about the color of Lake Louise, and if it is all pretty and turquoise-sy in the spring, and we are sad to say that for most of spring the lake has snow/thin ice. You can’t skate nor can you go canoeing. Canoeing starts in the summer, sometimes even late May (depending on the weather). However, trails near the lake are open. The popular hike to Agnes Tea House won’t open until the beginning of summer. 

Calgary is the closest city to Banff, and it is a nice place to enjoy shopping, culinary and cultural delights (Calgary Tower, Stephen Ave Walk, Art Museum, etc).

When you visit the Canadian Rockies, ensure you carry your woolen jackets, warm socks, and boots. The temperatures drop a lot in the evenings, and some days you can also see snow showers in the mountains. 

Toronto and Niagara Falls, Ontario

Toronto is a great option for a spring break in Canada. From outdoor festivals to museums, concerts, and sightseeing activities, Toronto will not disappoint you. 

Flights to Toronto in the spring months will be cheaper as compared to fall (other off-season), simply because August/September brings in a lot of international students as the semester starts.

Experience spring in Toronto in style by booking a hotel near the waterfront. Explore world-class attractions – CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, and join food tours at the Kensington Market, and the popular Distillery Market, minus the crowds. 

Ferries to the Toronto Islands starts in April. In late April – May, you can see cherry blossoms in Toronto’s High Park. 

From Toronto, you can easily take a day trip to Niagara Falls. It is off-season, so another great reason to extend your stay and book a hotel near the Falls. Although boat tours are closed in March/April you can still check out the falls from the viewing platform or head to the Skylon Tower.

Niagara on the Lake opens up its restaurants and wineries for guests at the annual festival – A Taste of Niagara – held at the Niagara on the Lake Community Centre from late April to early May.

Ottawa, Ontario

City break | Tulip festival | Light outdoor events – Rideau Canal | History/Museum | Sugar Festival 

The capital city of Canada – Ottawa decks up in pretty spring colors from late March to May. You will definitely enjoy the tulip festival in the city, held annually in May. Enjoy them at the Commissioners Park, which is home to the largest and most impressive tulip displays in Ottawa. Other areas for Tulip sightings include – Dows Lake along the Rideau Canal, Major’s Hill Park, and the Parliament of Canada.

If you are visiting in March and April, book a tour of the Parliament building, and learn about our history. Ottawa has a ton of impressive museums that are open during the spring months, such as – Canadian Museum of History, Canadian War Museum, and Canadian Museum of Nature. 

You must take a stroll by the Rideau Canal in the spring, or go boating in late spring months. 

In the Springtime in Ottawa, don’t forget to visit a sugar farm and try out maple syrup (or take some back home as a souvenir ). Maple trees start producing sap when the weather warms up, and locals have been tapping them for decades (producing over 106 gallons of syrup per 1000 trees). The Sugar Festival takes place in late March and lasts early April at the Vanier Museopark in Ottawa. 

Montreal, Quebec

Montreal is another spot to relish maple syrup, and all things sweet and yummy. (Don’t forget to pig out on delicious poutine, and bagel). Quebec, just like Ontario is home to over 200 sugar shacks, and you can easily find one near Montreal or Quebec City. 

Other than taking in the sugar rush, Montreal opens its doors to amazing culinary, cultural, and musical festivals in the spring. All of the prime attractions are open for visitors, making Montreal one of the best city break options in the whole of North America. And….April-May is one of the best times to experience the city.

Although a bit chilly in March, April kicks in the Montreal Nuit Blanche, a must-attend cultural festival of music, poetry, dance, and other performing arts. With fewer crowds in the spring months, you can take your time at the Old Montreal neighborhood, visit the Notre Dame Cathedral for Easter, or hop on a sightseeing boat tour at the old port. 

Being a lovely cosmopolitan city, you can go clubbing, enjoy an active nightlife, and visit museums, and the Olympic complex in the spring for a perfect weekend away. 

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia rings in warmer temperatures sooner than its counterparts in the Maritimes/Atlantic. Here you can enjoy the city’s public gardens, photograph them or go on a lovely walk.

During these months, patios are set up (already) to welcome guests to lobster rolls/seafood and drinks. This time is also perfect to embark on short day trips or road trips to nearby towns and coastal areas.

If you want to stay active during your stay, join a bike tour of the city, cycling through different neighborhoods. Or go surfing! Halifax is close to so many amazing beaches, and during the spring months the waves are small – and great for those wanting to learn to surf!

During springtime in Halifax, you can expect food festivals in the city as well. 

Newfoundland

Iceberg Alley

We had to include a gem from the Canadian territories. How about the Iceberg Alley in Newfoundland. And you can explore icebergs via boat and sightseeing kayak tours from April to May. It also extends to the early summer months, and the season stretches a bit longer as you go north. For optimal viewing times, head there in late May .

Iceberg Alley is the area that stretches from the coast of Labrador to the southeast coast of the island of Newfoundland. Note that many of the sightseeing points to the Iceberg Alley are open all year round, namely St. Lewis, Battle Harbour, Red Bay, Point Amour, which are located on the coast of southern Labrador. 

What to pack for Canada in the spring

As you can see, there is quite a varied temperature and regional differences when it comes to Candian destinations in the spring. We have tried our best to include a set packing list for you, and provided a few exceptions or add-ons to carry for certain destinations.

• Long sleeve tops, blouses, shirts, or hoodies
• Bottoms, jeans 
• Light insulated waterproof jacket (for evenings, early morning sightseeing)
• Warm jacket (if heading to the mountains, or for spring skiing activities. Same applies if you are visiting the Prairies in early spring)
• Comfortable walking/hiking shoes, if waterproof, the better
• Pack a warm scarf for comfort
• Umbrella or raincoat for the west coast

To say that winter has been a bit relentless this year would be a severe understatement. It’s tempting to want to bail for more tropical weather this time of year, but for those sticking it out in this great nation instead, there are a lot of rewarding and family friendly things to see and do during this season. Here are some of the best places to experience March Break in all its Canadian glory.

Whistler, British Columbia

This is clearly one of Canada’s—and possibly even one of the world’s—top winter sports destinations, with free ski or snowboard equipment rental for kids 12 and under (when accompanied by an adult who also rents). In addition to hitting the slopes, there are tons of other things to do here , like ziplining, bungee jumping, ATV or jeep tours, skating at the Olympic Plaza, and exploring a giant village.

Why it’s the perfect March Break destination: The unforgettable, breathtaking views from the Peak 2 Peak gondola —the world’s highest and longest lift that connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.

Tofino, British Columbia

March Break is one of the best times to visit Tofino on Vancouver Island. It’s the surfing capital of Canada, with year-round surfing, and it’s a great place in general to soak up some laid-back surf culture. There are ample surf shops offering gear (you’ll need a wetsuit) and lessons, and at this time of year you won’t have to fight the crowds like you would in the summer.

Kings Landing, New Brunswick

Visitors explore the village at their own pace, with the opportunity to churn butter, dip candles, spin wool, interact with farm animals, and ride wagons while learning about the culture and heritage of the area back then.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Often the warmest place in Canada, Vancouver in British Columbia, is on our vacation radar for the best places to visit in Canada in March. You can expect an average temperature of around 55 degrees, although it is prone to a lot of rainfall. Many travelers hit the city in March for the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival and the Vancouver International Dance Festival. The festival and event calendar has many other interesting things coming up annually.

If you miss the festivals, there are still heaps to see and do in Vancouver for solo, couple, group and family travelers. The seaport city has an active tourism board that is always promoting the city’s attractions. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is a unique thrill that combines culture, history, nature and action.  Then you have the great dining experience at The Cliff House Restaurant. As you can probably guess, the views are epic. In March, the gentle spring breeze is welcoming and you will soon warm up walking around the gorgeous park.

The Vancouver Aquarium is an exciting attraction to visit any time of the year, and the Hell’s Gate Airtram is a suspended gondola that cruises high over a ferocious part of the Fraser River.  You can walk over suspension bridges, buy sweet treats at the fudge shop and learn about the history of the local area.

Perhaps this year Toronto will be the warmest place in Canada, making it the best places to visit in Canada in March. As spring breaks, Toronto comes alive with people celebrating the new season that leads us into summer. Nature lovers in the city can enjoy Canada Blooms, the biggest garden and flower festival in the country and foodies are sweet on the maple syrup festivals in March.

If you search festivals and happenings in Toronto in March, you can find large-scale events and small celebrations throughout the month. Whenever you come, you are bound to find something interesting in the wonderful city of Toronto. That is on top of all the fabulous things to see and do all year round in this urban paradise. There’s shopping, fine dining, entertainment, attractions and all the luxury accommodation you need for a relaxing getaway.

We recommend Radisson Blu Toronto Downtown, which has affordable rooms in a central part of town. In March, you can go swimming in their heated outdoor pool, making you feel like summer is already here. You will be near the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Toronto Music Garden, the fashion district and other major tourist attractions. The modern brick-and-glass building is the perfect place to call home during your Toronto vacation and the service is outstanding.

Another nice accommodation option is the One King West Hotel and Residence. It’s time for vacation! CN Tower is an exciting attraction with the edge walk, a terrifying hands-free walk over a platform around the tower exterior, for thrill-seekers. Others can simply enjoy the amazing views of the city and enjoy a meal at the tower restaurant.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Another possible warmest place in Canada is Halifax. Spring is in the air and Halifax is a great place to be. As the city warms up, there is plenty to see and do, starting with a stroll along the picturesque waterfront. You are spoiled for choice with great restaurants serving up fresh seafood and dishes featuring locally-grown ingredients.

After one of the best meals you’ve had during a vacation, you can explore designer boutiques and little shops before catching the ferry over to Dartmouth for some more shopping. A harbour hopper tour is a great way to see the city on land and water. Meanwhile, the Halifax Public Gardens are just coming into bloom. The Victorian-era gardens opened in 1867 are near the busy shopping district of Spring Garden Road.

In 1984 the gardens were named as a National Historic Site of Canada. Take a picnic and a stroll with lots of photos of the flowers starting to burst into color. At night enjoy some live music at a pub and the weather might almost be warm enough to enjoy some of the patios like the ones at The Auction House and The Brown Hound Public House.

Butchart Gardens, with over 50 acres of flower beds, paths, water features and a photogenic carousel, is a garden many people say is the best in the city. When its time to eat, you should find your hungry way to Fisherman’s Wharf, where there are many waterfront restaurants. It might be warm enough to sit outside and you can watch the boats, seaplanes and people going by. You can book a whale-watching excursion for the following day and don’t forget to check the charming boutique stores for some local souvenirs.

Victoria’s British colonial past is reflected in the stunning Victorian architecture and for a fine example, you need to visit the grand Craigdarroch Castle mansion.Experiences like riding a double-decker bus, horse-drawn carriage or enjoying high tea will also remind you of the area’s British ancestry. Also, worthwhile experiences are taking a tour of the beautiful British Columbia Parliament Buildings and seeing the Robert Bateman Centre Gallery.

The city is full of art galleries and creative shops with all kinds of styles. These are just a few things to see and do in Victoria. You could stay for weeks and still have a long list of sights and attractions to visit.

Sunshine Coast, British Columbia

British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast lives up to its bright name with plenty of sunshine hours in March and throughout the year. You can only get to the 180 km stretch of coastline by ferry, boat or plane.

The atmosphere is relaxed and calm as you find yourself surrounded by nature.  Hike the Sunshine Coast trail, take a boat ride through the Desolation Sound and explore the beautiful Tetrahedron Provincial Park. The food and drink scene in the Sunshine Coast is spectacular with fresh fruit and produce, locally-made food products and fresh seafood.  Explore the ale trail, visit breweries and distilleries and roam the farmer’s markets to satisfy your foodie desires.

The Sunshine Coast’s mild March means you can spend lots of your vacation time outdoors fishing, playing rounds of golf, kayaking, canoeing, biking and boating.  There are heaps of pretty beaches and lakes to discover, and although it might not be warm enough for most people to swim, it is nice to take long beach walks taking photos and collection shells along the way.

In March, the number of non-resident visitors to Canada accounted for 93.3% of the number observed in March 2019, before the COVID -1 9 pandemic. US residents took 1.3 million trips to Canada in March 2024 and residents of overseas countries embarked on 346,900 trips.

The number of returning Canadian residents reached 92.0% of the level recorded in March 2019 as Canadian residents returned from 5.0 million trips abroad in March 2024.

Using seasonally adjusted data, both the number of non-resident arrivals to Canada and returning Canadian-resident arrivals decreased 1.3% in March from February.

Trips to Canada by US residents

In March, US residents took 1.3 million trips to Canada, up 22.1% from the 1.1 million trips taken during the same month in 2023 and reaching 91.7% of the level observed in March 2019 (1.5 million), pre-pandemic.

Almost three-quarters (72.3%) of US residents visiting Canada arrived by automobile (965,500 arrivals) in March 2024, and over half (53.1%) of those were same-day trips. Arrivals by automobile were up 23.9% year over year and represented 94.6% of such trips recorded in March 2019. US residents also took trips crossing over Canadian land borders in March 2024 by other means, such as by bus (27,300), as pedestrians (7,100), or by train (6,100).

Air arrivals (314,400) constituted 23.5% of all trips to Canada taken by US residents in March. Those arrivals were 14.3% higher than they were in the same month in 2023 and reached 85.7% of such trips taken in March 2019.

In March 2024, the points of entry most frequented by US residents entering Canada by automobile were near Vancouver (including Douglas and Pacific Highway in Surrey), near Niagara (including Niagara Falls and Fort Erie), and in Southwestern Ontario (including Windsor and Sarnia). Together, these were the points of entry for 72.2% of all such trips.

The busiest points of entry by air in March were in Toronto (including Toronto Pearson International Airport and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport), Vancouver, Montréal, and Calgary. Combined, these points of entry represented 93.0% of all US -resident arrivals by air in Canada.

Trips to Canada by overseas residents

In March, 346,900 overseas residents arrived in Canada, an increase of 20.4% from the 288,200 overseas arrivals observed in March 2023 and slightly exceeding the 346,200 arrivals recorded in March 2019. Most (86.4%) of the overseas residents arriving in March 2024 flew into Canada (299,800 arrivals).

The top three countries overseas visitors to Canada resided i n—t he United Kingdom (40,500), Mexico (36,100), and India (28,100)—together represented nearly one-third (30.2%) of all overseas arrivals in Canada during March. Mexico dropped to second place after four consecutive months at the top of the list, possibly attributable to more restrictive visa requirements for Mexican nationals wishing to enter Canada. France was bumped to fourth place by India, which had not appeared in the top three since June 2023.

In March 2024, overseas residents arrived in Canada most frequently at airports located in Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, and Calgary. Combined, these airports welcomed 96.2% of all overseas-resident arrivals by air.

Trips abroad by Canadian residents

Canadian residents returned from 5.0 million trips abroad in March, increasing 15.9% from March 2023 (4.3 million) and reaching 92.0% of such trips taken during the same month in 2019 (5.5 million).

In March 2024, Canadian residents flew back to Canada from 2.5 million trips abroad, which represented half (50.3%) of the total trips taken by Canadian residents. In March, the air arrivals were 9.5% higher compared with the same month a year earlier and reached 97.7% of such arrivals recorded in March 2019.

Trips to the United States by automobile (2.4 million) in March 2024 represented nearly half (48.5%) of the total trips taken by Canadian residents, and nearly two-thirds (62.3%) of those were same-day trips. Canadian residents returning by automobile from a visit to the United States increased by 23.1% year over year and represented 87.2% of such trips taken in March 2019.

In March 2024, the busiest airports for Canadian residents returning home from abroad were in Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, and Calgary. Combined, these airports represented 87.2% of all air arrivals from the United States and 83.9% of all overseas air arrivals.

The busiest points of entry for Canadian residents returning from the United States by automobile in March were near Vancouver, in Southwestern Ontario, and near Niagara. These points of entry represented a combined 63.3% of such trips.

Seasonally adjusted arrivals

Tourism is influenced by seasonal effects (e.g., actual seasons and holidays such as Canada Day and Thanksgiving) and by calendar effects (e.g., number of weekends in a month). All statistics in this section are based on seasonally adjusted data (for more information, please see Note to readers).

In March, the number of arrivals in Canada by US residents decreased by 0.8% compared with February. This decrease was mostly attributable to the decline in the number of automobile trips from the United States ( -2 .9%), both same-day and overnight. While US -resident arrivals by air also decreased month over month ( -0 .5%), the number of US residents arriving in Canada by modes other than air and automobile (e.g., bus, ferry, and train) increased by 13.9%.

The number of overseas-resident arrivals in Canada decreased by 3.0% in March compared with the previous month. Arrivals by residents of Europ e—t he largest overseas market, with 42.9% of the total overseas arrival s—i ncreased by 0.7%, bolstered by increased arrivals from France (+2.9%), Germany (+1.8%), and the United Kingdom (+1.0%). Arrivals in Canada by residents of Asia, the second-largest overseas market, decreased by 2.7% month over month. While India, the top Asian country in terms of the number of arrivals, increased by 10.1% in March, the number of visitors from China ( -5 .7%) and South Korea ( -9 .0%) decreased.

The Americas (excluding the United States) ranked as the third-largest overseas market, with 17.5% of the total overseas arrivals in March. This market decreased 15.1% from February, which can be attributed to a 43.8% decline in the number of arrivals from Mexico. Meanwhile, visitors arriving in Canada from South America increased 32.9% in March, driven by residents of Brazil (+49.9%).

Canadian residents returning from a trip abroad in March decreased 1.3% from February, ending the eight consecutive monthly increases of such trips. The decrease can be attributed to the 1.9% decline in the number of overnight trips by ai r—d own 2.0% from the United States and down 1.8% from overseas countries. Meanwhile, Canadian residents taking trips to the United States by automobile decreased 1.2% from February, with same-day trips decreasing 2.2%.
