Strange New Worlds Starfleet Duty Uniform – Tunic Variants

Over the years, I have had grand plans to recreate Starfleet uniforms. So far, none have come to fruition. But when I saw there was an exhibit of the new costumes from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, I hopped on the train and headed down, camera and seam gauge in tow. I’d never been to the Paley Center for Media and didn’t know how busy it gets (spoiler alert: not very). I got to spend some quality alone-time with the uniforms. 

This is only the first post. I took photos of all the costumes and props there and will post them as time permits. The others include Command Dress, Operations Dress, Medical Labcoat, Medical Jumpsuit, Cadet Dress Uniform, Field Jacket, and various non uniform costumes, tricorder, communicator, phaser, memorial pins, Vulcan pendant, and Illyrian scroll.

Without further ado, on to the good stuff.

Command Division, circa 225

Authorized for wear by those personnel specializing in the command and control tasks aboard starships as well as ground and space-based installations, along with Starfleet Command’s upper leadership hierarchy. The assigned division is represented by the uniform tunic’s gold color, with the officer’s rank denoted by stripes on the tunic’s sleeves.

This version of the Command Division Starfleet Duty Uniform is worn by actor Anson Mount for his portrayal of Captain Christopher Pike. It is a creation of costume designers Bernadette Croft and Gersha Phillips and the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds costume department.

Sciences Division, circa 2259

Authorized for those personnel assigned to any of the numerous science-based disciplines typical of starship’s crew, along with similar tasks performed by officers detailed to starbases and other permanent facilities. Examples of typical specializations include biological studies, technicians including sensor and other computer-based information collection and analysis, medics, nurses, and surgeons. The assigned division is depicted via teh uniform tunic’s prevailing blue color, with the officer’s rank displayed on the tunic’s sleeves.

This uniform is worn by actor Ethan Peck for his portrayal of Lieutenant Spock. It is a creation of costume designers Bernadette Croft and Gersha Phillips and the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds costume department.

Operations Division, circa 2259

Worn by Starfleet personnel specializing in the communications, engineering, security, and tactical functions aboard starships as well as starbases and planet-based installations. The uniform tunic’s predominant maroon color indicates the assigned division, with the wearer’s rank denoted by the stripes on the tunic’s sleeves.

This version of the Operations Division Starfleet Duty Uniform is worn by actress Christina Chong for her portrayal of Lieutenant La’An Noonien Singh. It is a creation of costume designers Bernadette Croft and Gersha Phillips and the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds costume department.

Color Reference

To ensure accurate colors I used Color Checker Passport for white balance and normalized exposure using the grey swatches. Except for when showing details on darker photos, I’ve tried to keep exposure consistent.

UPDATE: Thanks to the Star Trek Costume Group on Facebook and an awesome member who snapped a photo of the actual Pantones used for the costumes. They were shared at Star Trek: Mission Chicago by the costume designer Bernadette Croft. The official colors are below. Additionally, Pantone sells individual fabric swatches for each of their colors directly on their website.

Division Fabric (Downloads)

The raised superhero-esque print used on these uniforms sits much more flush with the fabric than the deltas on the Discovery uniforms. I scaled the image to actual size in Illustrator, then traced and averaged the pattern before tiling it. Since the fabric was not laying flat, I only based the traced pattern on the center of the frame and closest to the ruler to minimize distortion. 

Below are PDF files you can download. One suitable for large applications sized 30″x60″ and another smaller 8 1/2″x11″. Print at 100%. Do not scale.

Here are the photos liable to land me in the brig. Well, if not the brig, at least a stern dressing down by museum staff. In addition to laying my ruler all over the place, I took a peek underneath. Was it worth the risk?

Fabric: Unlike the Discovery uniforms which use a 4-way stretch woven material from Schoeller, this appears to use some kind of bonded knit microfiber.

Waistband: Even more interesting, the waistband is covered entirely in elastic. I didn’t dig any further to figure out what was going on, figuring I’d tempted the museum gods enough. This could be an alteration made for the exhibit or perhaps pregnancy pants have caught on for everyone in the 23rd century.

Flyzip: The zipper is attached very close to the opening.

Love the division fabric pattern downloads, any chance of getting them as PNGs or some other format with a transparent background?

Search Google for ‘PDF to PNG converter’ there are a bunch of free ones. The PDFs dont contain backgrounds so they should convert to transparent PNG easily.

I love the detail you were able to acquire. I noticed you mentioned the fly difference for the ops uniforms. I just wanted to note that difference is a gender differentiation. This is mainly a tradition thing but if someone wants to maintain the authenticity as much as possible, men would wear the pant examples from command and sciences and women would wear the pant example from ops.

This blog has simultaneously saved me from some misguided ideas and set me on a path of tons more work. Thank you for these detailed measurements, photos and files.

The Klingon War Jacket is the perfect weight for a chilly morning. It’s not so heavy that I have to take it off quickly and it looks great when layered with a t-shirt, polo, or even a work dress shirt.

I love that the Starfleet deltas and n the sleeves are slightly raised and the patches are high quality.

Best of all, I can wear this out with my non-Trekker wife and she likes it too!

Hallmark is expanding their 2024  Star Trek holiday ornament lineup — which we first told you about back in April — with one more starship this summer: a special convention-exclusive variant of their upcoming  USS Enterprise- B starship.

Debuting at Hallmark’s SDCC booth (#3348) on July 25, this “Nexus Damage”  Enterprise -B variant ornament celebrates the 30th anniversary of  Star Trek: Generations , and is limited to only 3200pc of total production.

Retailing for $35, this will be only available in person at San Diego Comic Con and will not be available through Hallmark’s online store (with small quantities reserved for Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club members). There will be an allotment planned for each day of the convention… so if you want it, get to Hallmark’s booth ASAP when you get to the convention.

(East Coast fans, you’ll also have an opportunity to get this ornament on site at New York Comic Con in October.)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ‘ Costumes Up Close Reveal the Devil’s in the Details

In any other large franchise, each TV show getting its own new costumes and designs is just a perfectly normal thing. In Star Trek, it’s created a canonical tapestry that paints the picture of Starfleet’s uniform design department going mad with power in a post-money utopia society that lets them radically overhaul the design of a military/scientific/diplomatic force every few years for little reason than fashion.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is no exception to this in its addition to the long, madcap timeline of Starfleet uniform history. We’ve known for awhile that the upcoming series—set between the events of Discovery’s second season and the early years of the original Star Trek during Christopher Pike’s captaincy of the Enterprise—would bring a new uniform design that draws upon the classic Star Trek uniform. Which, in of itself, was already different to when Discovery already did that, canonizing the Enterprise crew’s updated uniforms as something sent out with priority to crews on flagships, but don’t worry about that. Look at the new costumes! Pretty! Retro! And yet somehow still actually quite different to uniforms that would go on to be worn in the time of Kirk’s five-year mission on the same ship.

Star Trek’s official website shared our first really good look at the new uniforms, which were on display at the recent Star Trek: The Cruise V. At a glance, they’re largely a modernized take on that classic original Trek look. Uniforms for male officers are largely the same, while female officers now ditch the all-division-color miniskirt for a long jacket worn over a similar undersuit and leggings. There’s even fancy black paneling on either side! Very swish.

But getting even closer up to the uniforms you can see even more subtle additions—bringing in some modern texture, for example, is the wonderfully over the top detail that each division color has a special print on the shoulders and arms, subtly emblazoning the icon of their respective division—Operations, Sciences, Command, and presumably Medical too, although unseen here—in a pattern. You can’t see it from a distance, but up close, if you somehow forgot what department a colleague was in, you could squint real hard at their arms instead of the badge on their chest (which is now an actual badge, rather than a patch sewn into the chest). It’s a wonderful little detail in how extra it all is: on the one hand, the reality of a new TV show like this in a franchise like Star Trek means you want to give the costume designers something to do with such an iconic bit of visual design, pay homage to the classic, now-retro look. On the other, thinking about it in-universe terms just paints a picture of a design department with an outrageous amount of power, pushing out incremental wardrobe updates to the fleet with a frankly incredible level of reckless abandon.

Plus, are these meant to be separate uniforms to the ones that would be worn roughly a decade or so later during Kirk’s tenure aboard the Enterprise? In all likeliness, we’re probably meant to percieve this as us just seeing those same designs through modern eyes—that this is a vision of what they were always meant to look like in the fiction, we’re just getting to see that rendered in modern techniques. Perhaps, in the same way, Strange New Worlds’ bridge set balances the line between Discovery’s aesthetic and the classic glowy buttons and flip switches of the original Trek. But I’d like to imagine instead that at some point Starfleet’s design division sent up updated replicator files and a small note to every captain in the fleet that simply said “Sorry, even we thought the little shoulder print was too much: here’s a simpler shirt to wear.”

Thinking about Star Trek canon a little too seriously can always lead to some fun exercises in giving you a brain-splitting headache, but sometimes it just lets you imagine the absurd levels of bureaucracy that can exist in Starfleet at times. That, and a dedicated core of people very into their scientist-explorer-soldiers looking as slickly styled as possible at all times. We’ll get to see them in action when Strange New Worlds hits Paramount+ on May 5.

San Diego Comic-Con is coming this month, and while many of the attendees will be arriving in cosplay, those who came unprepared can order some while they're there. TrekCore.com reports that Hero Within will offer two new additions to their line of jackets inspired by Star Trek 's uniforms : the NX-01 Flight Jacket and the Wesley Jacket.

The NX-01 Flight Jacket is modeled after the blue jumpsuit-like uniforms featured on Star Trek: Enterprise , with the gold trim marking it as a command uniform, like that worn by Captain Jonathan Archer ( Scott Bakula ). It has two shoulder patches and multiple pockets, and the lining will feature the schematics of the show's titular ship, the NX-01 Enterprise . The Wesley Jacket is modeled after the acting ensign uniform Wesley Crusher ( Wil Wheaton ) wore on the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation , complete with its distinctive tri-color stripe. The Wesley Jacket will have interior pockets and a brush cotton shell. Its interior lining features a shot of the Enterprise in a distant region of space from "Where No One Has Gone Before", a key episode for Wesley. Both jackets will retail for $99 USD, and can be preordered at Hero Within's booth (#1943) at San Diego Comic-Con, from July 25 to 28.

Who Are Jonathan Archer and Wesley Crusher?

The son of a famed warp drive engineer, Jonathan Archer grew up seeing Earth's progress towards the stars being impeded by the Vulcans , and came to distrust the species. Becoming a test pilot himself, he later became the captain of the Enterprise , the first ship in what would later become Starfleet. With his crew, he explored new regions of the galaxy while dealing with a number of crises, including a desperate race against time to prevent an attack on Earth by the alien Xindi. He also overcame his prejudice against the Vulcans as he worked hand-in-hand with them and other species to begin assembling the United Federation of Planets. Born two centuries later, Wesley Crusher was the son of Jack and Beverly Crusher; Jack died in an accident when Wesley was young. When Beverly was assigned to the USS Enterprise-D , he accompanied her, and soon proved his scientific precociousness to the rest of the crew. He joined Starfleet Academy, but a tragic accident (that he initially helped conceal) marred his record. Ultimately, he left Starfleet to travel through reality with the Traveler, a mysterious alien. In that capacity, he returned on the second season of Star Trek: Picard - and (spoilers!) on the just-released second season of Star Trek: Prodigy .

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 Hits Netflix Top 10 Internationally, ‘Discovery’ Season 5 On Nielsen Top 10

The launch of the second season of Prodigy made some waves around the world. Also the Nielsen numbers are in for the week of the series finale of Star Trek: Discovery .

Prodigy hits Netflix top 10 around the world

In the days after the July 1 launch of the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy , the animated series hit Netflix’s top 10 Kids show chart in the UK and several other countries around the world. You can see it at number 10 from the Netflix app from the UK below.

In total, Prodigy showed up on the top 10 in eight countries around the world, primarily in Europe but also in India and New Zealand, according to the tracking site Flix Patrol. It performed best in Germany, on that chart for four days reaching a high of #3. Surprisingly, Prodigy also popped into the chart for France, even though the entire season has been available on France TV since March.

Unlike when the first season launched last Christmas , Prodigy didn’t make it into the Netflix Top 10 in the USA. The show that has dominated the Netflix Top 10 Kids shows chart in the US chart for the past week is Unicorn Academy , which also just launched a second season on the streaming service. However, it appears Prodigy is getting more “buzz” as it is outpacing Unicorn Academy when it comes to web searches over the last week, according to Google Trends.

In their recent interview with TrekMovie, series creators Dan and Kevin Hageman said they believed the show needed to do “ more than well ” to warrant a season 3 pickup, but they were hoping it might do well enough for Netflix to back a streaming movie.

Discovery ends in Nielsen Top 10

Nielsen has released the top 10 USA streaming charts for the last week of May, which includes the season 5 finale of Star Trek: Discovery (“Life, Itself”). Discovery popped in at the tenth spot, with 269 million minutes viewed. This is the fourth time Discovery showed up on the charts for the season, after appearing for three weeks in a row covering the first five episodes (the first two episodes were released in the same week).

Paramount+ shows tend to be a rarity on the Nielsen originals chart, which is in part due to the streaming service not having the reach of the giants like Netflix and Prime Video. 2023 was the first year Nielsen tracked Paramount+ shows and both Picard and Strange New Worlds also appeared on the top 10 charts, with Strange New Worlds season 2 doing significantly better in terms of ranks and minutes watched. Season 5 of Discovery also somewhat trailed behind season 3 of Picard in terms of the minutes watched metric.

Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Gets Timely In “Who Saves the Saviors”

I’m so glad it’s doing well internationally. And while it’s unfortunate that it’s not top 10 in the US, I’ve heard it’s 13 which isn’t bad IMO. I really hope that it continues to do well, and that it matches (or even succeeds) Netflix’s expectations to earn a season 3 renewal. This season, and series as a whole, is just so good and this level of talent deserves to be rewarded.

I’ve watched the two-part season opener, and so far am honestly mystified at what the all the shouting is about. I’ll continue watching, of course.

Both of these shows are (were) great and I’m glad that are getting viewers. Disco was wonderful and I will miss Michael Burnham. I really valued the flash-forward that showed her older. Prodigy was a perfect distillation of what Star Trek is and the love for the Trek universe and its values and lore was apparent throughout the show. The orange sweater-wearing time traveler was a delight (not being specific for spoilers) and an unexpected gift.

To be honest, I love season two of Prodigy more than the final season of Discovery. Though I love a few good moments from the latter. What an adventure!

Great to see! Not surprised about either of them actually. I assumed the Discovery finale would bring in more views. I don’t remember how big were the Picard and SNW actual view numbers were in their finales but I do think higher but that’s to be expected as well. All that matters is that Discovery got high enough numbers to.end with a splash at least.

But very very happy to see Prodigy enter the top 10 kids list again. And while I know not everyone was happy the entire season dropped at once it probably helped with the numbers. I’m just super happy it’s really being watched because it really deserves it seeing the reviews everywhere. Hopefully we’ll get another season but it’s probably way to early to say either way. But I absolutely love this show.

The “Picard” finale came in at 400 million minutes viewed, steadily climbing each week to the finale. “Discovery” fell out of the top 10 in the weeks leading up to its finale. Based on the season average, ending with 269 million was a bit of a bump, not a huge leap.

Always missing from Nielsen’s info is the number of unique viewers and demographics. Streamers have all of that information but will never share with the masses.

Again not very surprised because it was always stated both Picard and SNW did better than Discovery on views in general, now we finally have direct evidence of that. And of course it doesn’t give us a full picture but I’ll take what I can get.

And we have no idea if that’s what Discovery has always averaged or was it a bigger bump due to it being its final season…or is it actually lower than the previous seasons? Well it’s canceled now so it doesn’t really matter anymore but us nerds get off on this stuff lol.

But yeah I wish they share more information in general. It’s sad it took this long just to see some basic numbers to these shows.

Star Trek: Prodigy will stream on Netflix globally (excluding Canada, Nordics, CEE, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Belarus and Mainland China) and Season 1 is currently available on SkyShowtime in the Nordics, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Central and Eastern Europe with Season 2 coming soon.

Canada and China seem to be in the trickiest spot for this right now. At least the other countries will have an option, hopefully soon.

I would really love to see the Prodigy series go on to spawn more interest in Star Trek Toys. I’m just not sure I want to see Playmates have another go at it. Maybe Spin Master or Jazwares might be a better fit for the license. Hiya Toys looks really promising too, but I think those are going to be more in line with adult collectors. I’m not sure Hiya Toys would even be interested in a line that’s also for kids. Playmates just seems to incapable of thinking outside the shell!

Agree. Speaking of Playmates, I’m glad it will handle toy licensing rights for Hasbro’s Power Rangers.

the animated series hit Netflix’s top 10 Kids show chart

The lede was somewhat buried, but it’s not the ten top Netflix shows in Europe, but was the top ten *kids’ shows*. That’s a considerably lower bar.

According to FlixPatrol, Prodigy has been hovering around the top 20 of all streaming shows of all networks. Which is still impressive.

Don’t count on a season 3. Be glad we have what we have.

I’m nit a big DISCO fan, but I am still happy it is doing so well in viewership. ANY Trek show that does well is a win for all Trek fans.

That’s fine, despite Prodigy being my #1 current Star Trek show.

the prod numbers are interesting… trek was soaring when it was on netflix internationally… so many people got cut out or stopped following when paramount pulled the plug on disco right before season 4 premiered. i think this shows the influence netflix had on trek overseas…

And we STILL don´t have it on SkyShowTime. I wish they would have some of the newer Trek shows in Netflix here as well.
