Where Rhine, Wine and Design Flow Together

Rüdesheim landmark is now treasury for rhine wines.

The historic and heritage-protected building of the former Asbach Uralt distillery form the framework of one of the most exciting projects of the German wine landscape: Vinothek RheinWeinWelt Rüdesheim . Here the “spirit” of the wine lives on with the river Rhine being the powerful all-embracing and connecting element.

Creating new while keeping the old was the motto of the concept. Renovation steps were undertaken in a gentle, sensitive way, preserving typological and material characteristics without forgoing modern comfort. The original character of the room size, accessible concrete wine tanks was maintained. They constitute the heart of the vinothek. Their original historic glittering glass tiles on the walls and the signs and marks of a century of brandy production give the visitor a unique backdrop for wine tasting. Wines are presented in wines dispensers and are tasted by the visitors by their own.

Spread out over more than 1000 square meters, a whole new dimension in wine diversity is on offer: a selection of 76 wine makers from the UNESCO world cultural heritage Middle Rhine and Rheingau, Rheinhessen and Mosel. Be it the “young wild”, ambitious shooting stars or established wine estates: all of them shoot the RheinWeinWelt top the pinnacle of regional wine and event hospitality.

A modern cuisine with a deli shop invites to linger. A lovingly selected variety of products around the wine theme are on sale, as well as home-made tarts and cakes. Regional specialities like cheeses or meats complement the range.

WINE EXPERIENCES IN RÜDESHEIM

Make your group request now. we would be pleased to advise you on your individual wine experience in rüdesheim..

Matador Original Series

Your next german vacation should be in rheingau wine country.

W hen you think of wine country, the rolling hills of Napa Valley , the green fields of Tuscany, and the vineyards of Bordeaux may immediately spring to mind. Wine lovers certainly aren’t parched for options — hell, there’s even a wine region in every US state . Many of the best places for wine around the world, however, are taken over by crowds. Thankfully, that’s not so in the Rheingau, one of Germany’s top wine regions.

The Rheingau is just west of Frankfurt . It’s not among Germany’s most heavily trafficked destinations, nor is it typically the first stop on a wine connoisseur’s Euro tour, yet the Rheingau is as close to the epitome of ideal wine country as it gets. It’s the home of the Riesling grape, and wherever you go in the Rheingau, it feels like people drink Riesling like they drink water. The area is attractive even for people who aren’t wine enthusiasts, as the region is dotted with small towns along the Rhine River that have an abundance of classic German architecture, food, and culture. The next time you go to Germany, it should be for a Rheingau visit.

Where to stay on a trip to the Rheingau

Tourists are strolling on marktplatz in the center of Wiesbaden, Germany

Photo: trabantos /Shutterstock

The Rheingau region is just 20 minutes away from Wiesbaden, the capital of the German state of Hesse. A prominent global spa town in the 19th century, Wiesbaden is still famous for its restorative waters, wide range of cultural activities, and prime location. Whether by train or by car, it’s the perfect base for exploring the Rheingau. Not only are there geothermal spas where you can relax (and sober up) after a tough day of drinking Riesling — there are 26 hot springs throughout the city — there’s also an ornate casino reminiscent of Monte Carlo that’s said to be the inspiration for Dostoevsky’s The Gambler.

Once you’ve followed in the Russian author’s footsteps and lose all your money at the casino, you can sample some traditional German chocolates to lift your spirits. The Swiss and Belgians might get all the shine, but German chocolate deserves similar praise. You can’t leave Wiesbaden without stopping at Chocolateria Kunder , which manufactures its own chocolates, or Cafe Maldaner , the only Austrian-style chocolate cafe in Germany.

Wiesbaden may have all the offerings and comforts of a metropolitan city, but a 10-minute drive north will bring you to what feels like the heart of the countryside. Ride the Neroberg funicular railway to the top of an 800-foot hill, where you can walk a nature trail that skirts alongside a gilded Russian church.

The best winery tours through the Rheingau

Vineyards in autumn in Rheingau, Germany

Photo: Romrodphoto /Shutterstock

The Rheingau is home to 7,600 acres of vineyards that are located on the banks of the Rhine River, and spans about 30 miles from Wiesbaden to Rudesheim. The area is famous for producing a dry Riesling with citrus aromas. Some 90 percent of the Rheingau’s vineyards are located on the Rhine’s northern banks, and winemakers rely heavily upon the river for its moderating effect on the climate.

For the full wine experience, follow the signposted routes through the region. They vary only depending on your preferred mode of transportation. The Rheingauer Riesling Route is intended for driving, the Rheingauer Riesling Pfad for hiking, and the Rheingauer Radwanderweg for cycling. Regardless of which route you choose, you’ll find yourself traveling over high trails, through vineyards, and past castle ruins, monasteries, and small, picturesque towns. Including secondary connections, the Riesling routes span more than 74 miles, though you can experience as much or as little as you wish according to your itinerary.

If you find yourself in the Rheingau during the summer, you might catch the annual Rheingau Musik Festival , a “unique combination of culture and nature, music, enjoyment, and joie de vivre.” The festival takes place every summer, and this year it’s on June 26.

Visit the town of Rudesheim

Rudesheim am Rhein

Photo: marcociannarel /Shutterstock

Just over half an hour from Wiesbaden, Rudesheim is a classic German winemaking town on the banks of the Rhine. The best way to begin your day in Rudesheim is by taking the 15-minute cable car up to the Germania monument, which overlooks the old town, vineyards, and the river. The massive monument was built in 1871, commemorates the founding of the German Empire and the Unification of Germany, and is a great way to introduce yourself to the history of the region.

Take the chairlift back into town, and you’ll immediately find yourself surrounded by classic German buildings, aromatic bakeries, and restaurants serving up local fare. Rudesheim’s most famous street is the Drosselgasse, a 15th-century alley that used to be a passage for sailors carrying their oars, sails, and rigging back to their homes. Now, the street is filled with half-timbered homes and wine taverns. Drosselhof is a great place to sit outside and enjoy sausages, schnitzel, potatoes, and, of course, more Riesling.

If you haven’t had your fill of wine quite yet, you can visit the Brömserburg , one of the first stone castles in the Rhine Gorge, built in the 12th century. Now, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site housing the Rheingau Wine Museum and features exhibits on wine culture and history.

See Eltville, Rheingau’s largest town

Eltville, Rhein, Germany

Photo: LaMiaFotografia /Shutterstock

A scenic 20-minute drive east along the Rhine will bring you to Eltville, the largest town in the Rheingau. On a nice day, you can find most residents and visitors strolling along the Platz von Motrichard promenade, which runs right alongside the river and brings you to Electoral Castle. The castle is a 14th-century structure with a 79-foot tower and rose gardens perfect for a spring or summer walk. You can climb the steps to the tower’s top for a sweeping view of the town and surrounding vineyards, before returning to Platz von Motrichard and diving into the town’s booming wine culture.

The Eltviller Weinprobierstad should be your first stop. This wine-tasting stand on Platz von Montrichard is a collaboration between eight Eltville wineries, each of which freely gives away samples of Riesling and Pinot Noir. Every week, the Eltville winemakers use the stand to showcase their offerings, and it’s the perfect place to sample some local vintages while enjoying river views. Once you’ve got a healthy buzz, you can venture into the historic town and visit one of the many wine taverns or wineries, like Weingut Koegler or Weinhaus Krone .

view of the monastery Eberbach cloister

Photo: Alice-D /Shutterstock

Perhaps surprisingly, one of the Rheingau’s biggest wine-producing spots is a church. The Eberbach Abbey , a 12-minute drive from Eltville, was home to the largest vineyards in medieval Europe, which are now managed by the state of Hesse. The 12th-century abbey is home to around 500 acres of cultivated vineyards, three-quarters of which are planted with Riesling. The monastery serves primarily as an event venue — the Rheingau Musik Festival takes place here — but also runs guided tours through its cloisters, halls, and wine cellars.

How to plan a food weekend in Germany’s Rheingau region

Spread along the banks of the Rhine, a short hop from Frankfurt, the wine country, ancient forests and dairy pastures of Rheingau provide rich pickings for a new generation of inventive chefs.

A wideshot of green landscape in Germany

Thousand-year-old castles, towns of half-timbered houses and pathways winding through rows of prized vines define Germany’s Rheingau, a 300sq-mile region along the River Rhine that stretches from Wiesbaden to Rüdesheim am Rhein. Viticulture has long been Rheingau’s raison d’être, and within its 7,800-acre spread of vineyards you’ll find some of the world’s finest grapes. Old-world wine-country villages such as Kiedrich, Hattenheim and Assmannhausen host restaurants where menus are replete with local vintages and the distinctive dishes of Rheingauer cuisine. Local bounty includes quality meat and dairy from the cows grazing in the wild pastures of the nearby Taunus mountains, along with wild boar, venison, mushrooms and berries found in dense tracts of forest thick with beech, birch and oak.

Ancient it may be, but Rheingau has lately gained such a culinary reputation that restaurants new and old are attracting renowned and up-and-coming chefs, bringing some culinary buzz to the Frankfurt backcountry.

Where to eat in Rheingau

1. Groenesteyn , in Kiedrich The views are spectacular at this historic half-timbered house in Kiedrich, in Rheingau’s northeastern reaches. Chef-owner Dirk Schröer has transformed this former 17th-century wine tavern into an equally gemütlich restaurant that serves flavoursome farmhouse food elevated to one-star Michelin standards. Standout dishes on the frequently changing menu may include beef roulade with white asparagus, and halibut with rhubarb and leek, in addition to creative bites like pickled potatoes with sorrel and buttermilk ice cream. The extensive wine list and remarkable view overlooking the vineyards and the 13th-century Scharfenstein castle add to its old-world charm.

A waiter is holding two plates on one hand. They are a long rectangle shape, and have a selection of chocolate deserts on each.

2. Schloss Vollrads , in Oestrich Winkel Overlooking the mighty Rhine, surrounded by vineyards, Schloss Vollrads is a pilgrimage spot for those who love riesling. Frühschoppen (a morning tipple and chat) is a delight in the sunlit castle gardens, for travellers making a flying visit. But pause here a while. The 800-year-old estate has been cultivating riesling for as long as it’s been standing, and serving world-class wines and local food since at least 1493. Current chef Alexander Ehrgott has designed a menu that’s as much about wine-pairing as it is regional dishes. Try fried veal steak with turnips, potato terrine and a wine jus paired with a wonderfully dry, aged estate riesling. The chocolate mousse with a tonka bean ice cream is another dish not to miss.

3. Gasthaus Zur Schlupp , in Walluf This charming little restaurant may date back to 1608, but the dishes served by the Ehrhardt family bounce to a contemporary, seasonal tune. Chef Michael and his wife Isabelle, also a sommelier, have run this unpretentious gasthaus since 2000, and it’s become a go-to in the eastern Rheingau town of Walluf. Michael helms the kitchen conjuring Mediterranean-influenced cuisine largely drawn from regional produce, while Isabelle matches those flavours with excellent local wines. Homemade pastas and desserts are menu favourites but it’s really the fragrant soups and stews from Michael’s childhood that define dining here, such as sweet tomato soup with wild garlic dumplings or his creative takes on roast wild goose – a defining Rheingau dish.

4. Adler Wirtschaft Franz Keller , in Hattenheim Clinking glasses and roaring chatter enliven each wooden table at the crowded Adler Wirtschaft Franz Keller, a buzzing, wine-focused inn with superb food. ‘Simple is the best’ is the guiding philosophy here, with dishes devised from ingredients grown on the Adlers’ farm in the nearby Taunus mountains. Starters include the likes of a goose liver parfait with riesling jelly. Fantastic mains range from white asparagus in a béarnaise sauce with ham from Adler free-range pigs, to aubergine dumplings with a spicy tomato piperade and prime cuts from the steak menu. Don’t forget to round out the meal with a glass of schnapps served from a clanging cart.

A traditional building in Germany with contrasting wooden beans on the exterior

5. Jean , in Eltville Self-proclaimed ‘wine city’ Eltville is Rheingau’s unofficial capital, and Hotel Frankenbach’s restaurant Jean is conveniently located next to the main railway station – and just a short walk from a romantic promenade along the Rhine. Chef Johannes Frankenbach brings the flavours of France to regional ingredients in such cleverly balanced dishes as duck foie gras with creme brulee, calvados and granny smith apples; a French-Mediterranean bouillabaisse; and a plate of veal kidneys with spinach and black salsify. The exhaustive wine list includes bottles from Rheingau and also Bordeaux, while the wood-panelled ceilings, old photographs and low lighting recall the building’s former life as a simple little wine tavern.

Don't miss

The best way to explore Rheingau – taking in its smells, sights and tastes – is to hike around the vineyards. It’s easily done as a self-guided walk, following trails such as the riverside Rheinsteig , or you can book a local guided tour. Bottlestops , for one, runs a range of curated wine excursions that take you from the city of Mainz into Rheingau where you’ll learn about the region’s viticultural history, wine varieties and terroirs with plenty of opportunity to pop into various vineyards en route for tastings. Its ‘Sunday Wine Excursion in Rheingau’ tour takes you on a modified day-long Sonntagsausflug (a traditional Sunday countryside stroll) where you’ll visit historic wine estates and take in expansive rural views, while the ‘Castles, Abbeys and Wine Tour’ visits the region’s centuries-old venues that are still making wine today.

Where to stay

Zum Krug , in Hattenheim In the handsome heart of Hattenheim, a Rheingau town famed for its riesling, Zum Krug charms just as much now as it did when it was founded back in the 18 th century. Current owners the Laufer family have blended old and new to beautiful decorative effect. Stained glass windows and exposed beams sit alongside masterfully crafted wooden bed frames, chairs and tables topped with traditional ‘bembel’ ceramic wine pitchers. But it’s Zum Krug’s food that makes it an essential port of call. Long-forgotten local dishes like a savoury handkäse cheesecake with sour cherries grace the list of starters, while freshly caught wisperforelle trout with a light riesling sauce is a popular main. For dessert, the fan-favourite, made by the family’s grandmother, is a rye bread ice cream served with vanilla-infused sour cream and rhubarb. Doubles from £130, B & B.

Deutschland, rhein - beschreibung.

Location, Grape Varieties and Climate

Rheingau wine region is located in the southwest of Germany surrounded by Rheinhessen , Nahe , and Rhineland wine regions. Thanks to the location of the Rheingau wine region along the powerful Rhine River between the Main River and the Wisper River, the vineyards enjoy a favorable microclimate and fertile soil throughout the year. Most of the vineyards are cultivated on steep slopes creating an ideal growing environment.

Riesling dominates the vineyards of the Rheingau making up more than 78% of all Rheingau vines. The second most popular grape in the area is Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). There are 14 designated growing areas where Riesling and Pinot Noir are popularly planted, delivering full-bodied, high-end wines, along with a few plots dedicated to Müller-Thurgau. Each of the wines produced here is classified depending on the ripeness of the grapes.

This region has all the climatic, soil, and excellent proximity to the river for Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes to grow in the best way possible. With only 3000 hectares of vines, the Rheingau is small in comparison to the neighbouring wine regions. But its reputation for the production of world-class white wines makes it a driving force in the international perception of German Riesling.

Grape Varieties of Rheingau Wine Region

The vineyards of the Rheingau wine region are planted for 78% with Riesling grapes that really dominate the production. The second most grown grape is Spätburgunder, but the vineyard area is only 12%. Some of the other varieties grown in very small amounts include Müller-Thurgau, Ehrenfelser, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. The Rheingau wine region is also home to some extremely small quantities of Dornfelder, Portugieser, and Pinot Madeleine. Over the years, the wineries of the region have shifted their interests in some international varieties, namely Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.

Red Varieties : Spätburgunder , Dornfelder, Merlot , Portugieser, Pinot Madeleine, Cabernet Sauvignon .

White Varieties : Riesling, Grauer Burgunder, Müller-Thurgau, Ehrenfelser, Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris , Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc .

The Land of the Best White Wines from Germany

Globally, the best white wines from Germany are those produced in the Rheingau wine region. The territory is indeed dominated by the absolute king of German white wines, Riesling.

Rheingau Riesling wines are medium-bodied, which makes it different from other Rieslings, such as the one from Mosel . Mosel Riesling is known for having more peach and apricot notes, as well as a hint of petrol, and blue slate. Rheingau wines are stronger, austere, and feature a distinctive mineral taste with racy acidity and crisp citrus fruit. Rieslings from the Rheingau wine region are perfect with a wide range of food or can simply be enjoyed on their own as an aperitif.

Georg Breuer

The original winery dates back to the year 1880, but recently the Breuer family acquired the winery and made it popular all over the world. 34 hectares of the winery territory are planted with Pinot Noir grapes and Riesling grapes. Today, Theresa Breuer together with Markus, the expert winemaker of the winery, meticulously controls that the wines from the cellar are of the best quality both for local consumption and for international shipping.

Weingut Robert König - Vineyard 2

Weingut Robert König

Located near the village of Assmannshausen, the small Robert König Winery produces almost only Pinot Noir. Robert König dedicated his winemaking passion to favour export, and in fact, the Pinot Noir from his winery became very popular in the USA, in China, and in Japan. The grapes are grown in three different sub-regions with slightly different microclimates. This gives every type of Pinot Noir a specific characteristic.

Winzer-von-erbach-winemakers Cwudnk

Winzer von Erbach

The Winzer von Erbach Winery specializes in the production of fruity Riesling and velvety Pinot Noir. All the winery’s vineyards are carefully picked and chosen to assure the wines have the best and most tasty characteristics. Red wine varieties age in high-quality German, American, and French oak barrels. Young wines are given more time to mature, this helps them gain a more complex taste.

Eltville and kiedrich - art treasures in the middle of the vineyards .

Eltville, also known as the city of wine and roses, is an attractive destination and the biggest town in Rheingau. It is surrounded by the Rheingau wine region vineyards; in fact, winemaking is the primary economic activity of the town.

Church In The Village Of Kiedrich, Germany

The main attraction in Eltville, apart from the beautiful bank on the Rhine River, is the Electoral Castle with its walk-in tower and rose garden around, which creates spectacular atmosphere, especially in May when roses are blossoming. The castle was built in the 14th century as the residence of the Electors and Archbishops of Mainz. The best period to visit the castle is between spring and summer when all the roses around the castle and on the Rhine promenade bloom.

Only 2 km from Eltville, the town of Kiedrich also was under the jurisdiction of the Archbishopric of Mainz and once acted as a border of defence for the city. The ruins of this fortified castle, Burg Scharfenstein, still tower over the vineyards today.

Rüdesheim am Rhein – A World Heritage Location

The town of Rudesheim am Rhein is not just a winemaking town but is also part of the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine World Heritage Site. Rudesheim is a major tourist attraction particularly due to the picturesque old town, historical buildings, and charming German village atmosphere, where one wine bar after the other invites visitors to enjoy local wines.

The most notable sites to visit in Rüdesheim are the Niederwald Monument celebrating the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. The cable car ride that takes you up to the monument provides excellent views of the river and the vineyards. You can take the cable car from the village of Rüdesheim. Other sites not to miss include the quaint little alleyway of Drosselgasse, with its half-timbered homes, and the Eibingen Abbey.

Rudesheim is also regularly visited by tourists because of the number of beautiful and safe hiking trails that start from there. The town also hosts a number of regular events which draw people from all over the world.

Eberbach Abbey – Where it all Began

This former Cistercian monastery is considered to be the “birthplace” of Rheingau wine. The monks of the Cistercian order who founded Eberbach Monastery in 1136 successed in viticulture and winemaking, which turned the abbey into a flourishing wine enterprise. Today, the vineyards of the abbey are managed by the government of Hesse.

Eberbach Abbey, Rheingau Wine Region, Germany

The architecture of the Eberbach Abbey features Romanesque, early Gothic, and Baroque buildings and decorations. The first monks entered the monastery complex in the 12 th century; now that monks don’t live here anymore, the Abbey is used as a venue for the Rheingau Music Festival. In the years 1985/1986, Eberbach Abbey was turned into a location for the film The Name of the Rose.

The Eberbach Abbey is open for visitors. you can admire the beauty and the architecture of the building as well as enjoy wine tasting. Twice a year, the abbey hosts the wine auctions.

What to Eat in Rheingau Wine Region

Rheingau wine region in Germany has a vast range of artfully prepared cuisines and handcrafted dishes. Do not miss a chance to taste some of the seasonal delights, made from local ingredients of the region, paired with luscious wines or a fresh pint of beer.

Spundekäs – Spreadable Cheese with a Twist

The Spundekäs is a cheese spread or dip that originated in Mainz but due to its proximity to Rheingau, it is also a very popular appetizer on the other side of the Rhein River.

The base ingredients of Spundekäs are fresh cheese (mainly Quark), butter, onions, peppers, chili peppers and various spices. This delicacy is best experienced with a glass of wine and pretzel crackers or with some wholesome German bread. It is usually served in a cone shape, together with radishes and boiled potatoes.

Riesling Soup – There’s Never Too Much Riesling

This creamy, tasty, and thick soup is a holiday must in the entire Rheingau wine region. In most restaurants and family gatherings, the soup is served with crunchy croutons powdered with cinnamon. Not all the Rieslings are good for making this dish, as the drier styles might offset the balance in the flavours.

All wine styles of the Rheingau pair beautifully with this dish.

The Spundekäs Spread With Pretzel

Speckkuchen - A Crusty Bacon Pie

Speckkuchen is a popular specialty from northern Hessen but is widespread throughout the entire region, which makes this very special pie available in the Rheingau region. The Speckkuchen is a bacon crust, or a pie, baked with rye flour and topped with bacon, sometimes it also has leeks or onions in it. Every bakery in Hessen has its own recipe and prepares its own unique Speckkuchen.

This is pretty popular street food, it can be easily found on the stalls at Christmas Markets or at Gastronomy events in the Rheingau region.

Golden Ring Tours Immerse in Russian heritage, architectural masterpieces & stunning landscapes.

Golden ring tours overview.

Our Golden Ring Tours take place close to Russia's capital Moscow, yet seemingly a world away, adventuring to the beautifully preserved ancient cities of the Golden Ring route is a must. The cities of the Golden Ring are perfect destinations for travellers seeking the idyllic, provincial Mother Russia of old. A must short detour when Visiting Moscow. Scattered across a rural landscape of rolling hills, flower blanketed meadows, rivers and streams. The cities of the Golden Ring were considered political backwaters by the time Soviet industrialisation took hold, escaping much of the urban progress that rapidly engulfed Moscow and its surroundings. Consequently, many locals to the Golden Ring still lead a largely traditional existence, living in tight-knit communities where the ancestral izba (wooden farmhouse) is the centre of daily life.

 Golden Ring Russia, Travel Highlights:

  • Regarded as open-air museums, be enthralled by many of the Golden Ring’s ancient settlements and architectural masterpieces . These include the UNESCO-listed monasteries and onion-dome cathedrals in Yaroslavl, the white stone monuments of Vladimir (the Golden Gates, the church of Boris and Gleb), and the medieval wooden houses and windmills in Suzdal.
  • Our Golden Ring Tours facilitate immersion in the colourful culture of provincial Russia. Towns such as Ivanovo and Kostroma still maintain a largely traditional way of life. When you visit the Golden ring, be sure to try the delicious traditional Russian cuisine, admire time-honoured handicrafts and unearth ancient relics of the Soviet times.
  • Discover the sacred places of the orthodox religion at their many cathedrals, churches and historical monuments like the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius, the Holy Assumption Cathedral and the Cathedral of Transformation.
  • Uncover the age-old allure of Russia by delving into the rich history and legends of the Golden Ring. From Russian princes and knights to the early Tsars and Mongol invasions, you will experience something straight out of a fairytale.
  • Admire the stunning natural landscapes of the Golden Ring dominated by rippling meadows, lush green forests and winding rivers used to link fortified towns in the middle ages.

Many Golden Ring cities date back to at least the 10th century, and played a vital role in Medieval history, associated with the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, the reign of Tsars and the Mongol Invasions. When you go on a Golden Ring tour, you will notice that virtually every town is a living museum, made up of ancient forts, towering monasteries, imposing palaces and magnificent cathedrals. Recognised for their artistic merit as an important place in history, four sites on the Golden Ring circuit have gained UNESCO World Heritage Site status, including the 1,000-year-old city of Yaroslavl.
