Join us for a relaxed bike ride through the magnificent city of Prague! See the highlights and learn about their history with our enthusiastic guides. You’ll discover and enjoy all the beauty that Prague has to offer! We will start the tour in the heart of the Old Town, the perfect location for an introduction to Prague. From here, we will make our way to the astronomical clock followed by the Old Town Square. You may even get a chance to see the interior of the beautiful gothic Tyn church.

From the Old Town, we will head towards the Jewish Quarter, Joefov. This is a dynamic and vibrant neighborhood filled with history, charm, and stunning architecture.

Enjoying a leisurely ride through the Letna Park, we will stop for some breathtaking views over the city and enjoy a short coffee/tea break in one of Prague’s most famous beer gardens. We will then continue on to the Royal Gardens; the former monarchical summer residences. This is an excellent opportunity for outstanding photos from the Castle and Cathedral.

We will take the opportunity to visit the interior of the castle complex and the St. Vitus Cathedral together. This is our final vantage point over the city before making our way back to our office. Following the tour, your guide will be happy to answer questions and provide restaurant recommendations to ensure that you get the most out of your visit to Prague.

What is the cancellation policy?

We’re happy to offer free changes and 100% refund up to 24 hours before tour departure. Failure to cancel a reservation at least 24 hours prior to scheduled departure may result in forfeited travel funds. Fare difference may apply.

What is included in the tour?

We provide the bike, helmet (required for anyone under 18), and local guide. The cost of food and drink are not included (we will have the chance to stop for drink mid-way through the tour) and gratuities are at your discretion.

Will there be a basket on my bike?

We have bikes with and without baskets, and we’re happy to accommodate you! We recommend only bringing small items along for the tour and leaving any larger bags behind. Alternatively, you are welcome to leave luggage in our office during the tour.

What kind of bikes do you use?

We use comfortable cruiser and city-bikes (KTM & RockMachine) so that you are upright and able to see and appreciate the sites as we ride. We also have smaller bikes for kids, tag-a-long tandems, and baby seats. Please let us know in the notes of your booking if your children will require a smaller bike and/or bike accessory.

How long is the tour?

We will have a leisurely ride for around 3 hours and cover about 6 miles/10 kilometers.

What covid-specific policies have you put in place?

Guests are encouraged to bring a mask along to the tour although you will not be required to wear it while riding. Should you want to visit a shop, you may be asked to wear it. All equipment is sanitized before and after each use, and we take care to socially distance our groups whenever possible.

Will we go inside any of the sites that we see on tour?

Yes! We include a brief stop at the Tyn church and we’ll have the chance to visit the inside of the St. Vitus Cathedral when it’s open. We’ll also take some time to walk around the castle complex on the north side of the city.

Can I upgrade to an e-bike?

We have planned a tour route that is incredibly flat and easy to manage for most fitness levels. If you require an e-bike due to medical issues, please reach out to us in advance so that we can arrange to rent one for you, and know that this will come with a supplemental cost.

What if it's raining?

Feel free to contact us if you would like to reschedule your tour for a different day due to inclement weather. We will do our best to accommodate you!

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). A taxi from the airport to Prague centre will cost about 1000-1200 Czech Koruna ($55). At the end of your trip, a private shuttle will take you to Wien Westbahnhof Train Station.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you in front of the Fantova kavárna (Fantova Café) at the Prague’s Main Railway station (Wilsonova street 300, 110 00, Prague) at 9:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Fantova kavárna is in the historical building of the station, at the original main entrance. You'll shuttle two hours to the charming village of Holašovice for delicious lunch at a typical Czech “hospoda”. Please have your first-day cycling clothes and riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. After lunch, your guides will do a bike fit before you begin your day’s ride through the Bohemian countryside.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Bellevue (+420 380 720 177), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from the Prague train station to the ride start or first hotel will take about 2,5 hours and cost around 300 euros.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Richard Lowenherz Hotel. A private shuttle will take you to Wien Mitte Train Station in Vienna, arriving at approximately 12:00 PM. Please do not schedule departing trains prior to 3:00 PM.

The terrain is gentle rolling hills and smaller roads with light traffic the first three days of our trip. Upon reaching the Danube River, the routes are on beautiful (and flat) bicycle paths. Prague to Vienna is best suited for our Type 2 Riders. Our Trek Travel guides can also easily accommodate Type 1 Riders, who seek less mileage or fewer uphills, with a boost in the van. For those eager to experience every mile but mindful of their physical limits, our electric bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution. Type 3 Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.

Hotel Bellevue is nestled into the pedestrian mall close to the Český Krumlov Castle, in the center of an historical zone listed since 1992 as part of the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites. The first mention of the building dates to 1561. A renowned bakery and baker’s shop were located in the building during the 16th and 17th centuries. Well known for outstanding service, beautiful guest rooms and exquisite dining options, Bellevue Hotel sets the tone for the fantastic hotels on this trip. This fully-restored hotel was built on the present site at the end of the 16th century and was altered to the Baroque style you see today by Count Leopold Cristoph von Schallenberg in the middle of the 17th century. While local currency is preferred, there are other options to make tipping easier. Most guides accept gratuity via PayPal or our staff can help before or after the trip. Summer season in the Czech Republic and Austria is warm with moderate humidity and occasional rain, with temperatures between 70-80s ºF (low to high 20s ºC). July and August can be hot, up to 90s ºF (30s ºC). Rain is not unusual and can be substantial at times so make sure pack your rain gear. What happens once I book?

When a trip is booked, a guest confirmation email is immediately sent out. One week prior to the trip start, you’ll receive an email containing your trip start meeting location reminder and any last-minute information that you’ll need to know. You will also receive instructions to download the Ride with GPS app before your trip to provide you the day to day plan and daily route guides.

With one person booked on a date, the trip becomes guaranteed.*

In the case where trips are at one or two guests, we will contact you prior to final payment to give you the following options:

Pay a small trip fee of $500 per person for two guests or $1000 for one guest, which ensures your preferred trip date will run. If there are three or more guests before departure date, the fee will be refunded in full.

Switch to a different trip or different departure date. Should there be any difference in trip price between your original trip and the new one, you will be expected to pay the difference, or we will refund you accordingly.

Offer only valid if Trek Travel contacts a guest to discuss these specific options. Bike trips with fewer than three guests may operate with only one guide. The guide will support all rides with a Trek Travel van. If you would like to discuss the option of having two guides, please speak with your trip consultant.

The small trip supplement for Ride Camps is as follows – for two guests an additional $250 or for one guest an additional $500.

SAFETY: At Praha Bike, your safety is our priority! Our quality bikes are well-maintained, comfortable and made for riding in Prague. The tour moves at a comfortable pace so that everyone can enjoy the sights. Our well-planned routes manage to avoid tourist crowds and high traffic areas. We stay on side streets, bike paths and ride in green area and parks. Helmets are always recommended but are not obligatory for those over 18 y.o. (in accordance with Czech law). 

REQUIREMENTS: Guest must be able to ride a bike, no training is provided except how to control breaks & gears on bicycle or e-bike.

Prague – Vienna

From the Golden City to the old imperial city

We have combined two cities widely regarded as among the world's most beautiful on an eight-day cycling tour. While city life bustles with energy, the natural landscapes offer peace and serenity. Your route is adorned with castles, palaces, cultural landmarks, and inviting beer gardens, beginning in South Bohemia and continuing into the Waldviertel. Raise a glass to toast the kilometers you've conquered—you've certainly earned it!

Embark on a discovery tour through Prague, the "Golden City" where magnificent places and buildings await at every turn. Depart from the Czech capital along the Vltava River, journeying through pristine Bohemian landscapes. Cycle through charming villages, past the Milešov reservoir, and visit Zvikov Castle near Písek. Continue your route to Hluboká Castle and onward to České Budějovice, where a visit to a beer garden is essential.

The route leads across the South Bohemian Pond Plateau on a secluded path through wild and romantic nature to Gmünd. From there, you enter Austria's Waldviertel region, traversing dense forests that mirror its name. The final leg of the journey follows the Kamptal cycle path to Hadersdorf and onward to Krems. Finally, you cycle alongside vineyards and the Danube River to reach Vienna.

With stage lengths of up to 70 kilometers, these routes are demanding, featuring challenging inclines. You'll appreciate the peaceful surroundings, but it's essential to have good fitness levels for this journey.

Prague may no longer be a hidden gem for city breaks, but the rest of the country remains seriously underrated. Embark on a cycling tour in the Czech Republic to discover its lesser-known corners.

Itinerary at a glance

You don't have to decide whether you prefer prague or vienna - both metropolises are on your itinerary. along the vltava river, you will come across charming hidden gems, and in the wine region of weinviertel, you can visit rustic wineries..

We recommend arriving in Prague early - the “golden city” is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and the historical city centre has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1992. Its historical buildings, the winding streets of the old city and a breath-taking view of the Charles Bridge are perfect excuses for a stroll around the city and will be the first of many unforgettable holiday delights.

The Vltava river will guide you out of Prague. The slightly hilly and ever-changing landscape will enchant you. During today’s stage, you will pass through many small, idyllically situated Bohemian villages. The small houses with wooden-panelled gables irresistibly draw the eyes, and the many cosy inns entice one to stop for a refreshing beer.

For most of today, you will once again be following the course of the river Vltava, passing through many small Bohemian villages and the lush Bohemian forest. Via a beautiful reservoir on the Vltava near Milešov, you will make your way to Orlík. The gothic castle is certainly worth a visit, but merely a few kilometres further comes the next attraction; Zvikov Castle was one of the most important castles of Bohemia in the middle ages. The picturesque town of Písek marks the end of today’s stage.

You will be surrounded by fascinating virgin and cultivated landscapes for most of the day. The bike path follows the romantic banks of the Vltava river for the most part and will lead you through some pretty towns like Týn nad Vltavou. A small forest path will bring you to Hluboká castle, which sits atop a hill high over the Vltava and is definitely worth visiting. On arrival in České Budějovice, also known as Budweis, a Budweiser beer is exactly the right refreshment to make up for any exertions during the day.

During today’s stage, you will experience nature at its purest. The southern Bohemian landscape features many meadows and forests. The region is recognised as a UNESCO nature reserve, and the so-called “southern Bohemian pond landscape” is a result of the long-standing fish farming tradition in the region. The wholly untouched nature is a fantastic experience for any cyclist, and there is also something for fans of culture and architecture; historical buildings, old citadels and picturesque villages are scattered all along the way.

Today’s stage will take you through the north of Lower Austria. The so-called “Waldviertel” region is known for its many river and pond landscapes. The cycle path will lead you through seemingly endless forests with fresh air and wonderful authenticity. The Waldviertel cuisine is also known far and wide. Make sure to try a dish with carp and potatoes, the culinary specialities of this region.

The Kamptal bicycle path will quickly lead you to Hadersdorf via Langenlois. The route is gorgeous and also relatively flat. You will soon spot the first vineyards around Krems. From Hadersdorf, you will take the train to Tulln. Take some time to visit the Egon Schiele museum before riding the last few kilometres along the Danube to Vienna. You will reach your accommodation via the Danube Island, comfortably avoiding all traffic.

Route information

The road quality varies widely. The route follows both well-paved cycle paths and bumpy, unsurfaced dirt tracks and forest trails. For the most part, you will cycle along separate cycle paths and secondary roads, with only a few sections featuring heavier traffic. Please note that the Czech part of the route as well as the so-called “Waldviertel” include some steep climbs and require a good level of fitness. The signposting of the route is generally good.

Exploring history, Embracing Beauty and Finding Magic: A Czech-German Cycling Odyssey

This Prague to Dresden bike tour leads through the heart of Europe revealing unexpectedly delightful Czech and German landscapes. You explore picturesque towns, breathtaking natural parks, and the enchanting valleys along the Vltava and Elbe rivers.

Prague is the starting point and the perfect place to begin. Its cobbled streets and ancient architecture set the stage for your days ahead.

You cycle north through Melnick and then pause at the imposing Terezin Fortress, a stark symbol of military architecture that bears witness to its grim role as a World War II Jewish concentration camp.

From the dark past, you then venture into the magical and otherworldly landscape of Czech-Saxon Switzerland Natural Park. Towering sandstone cliffs, volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and meandering rivers create a fairytale. The locals call it the "Land of Narnia" and indeed some scenes from the film series were set here.

Day 1: Arrival into Prague Upon your arrival, settle into your first hotel and take the opportunity to explore the enchanting city of Prague at your own pace. The city is renowned for its well-preserved architecture. The Prague Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the largest ancient castle complex in the world. The Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, and the Astronomical Clock are other iconic landmarks that showcase Prague's architectural splendor.

Day 2: Prague – Melnik (33 miles/53 km) As you embark on your journey, a gentle climb leads to a picturesque trail guiding you to the heart of the Czech wine region, the town of Melnik. Along the way, you'll pass the Troja Baroque Castle and follow the northern bank of the Vltava River, unveiling interesting rock formations and deep valleys. Highlights include visits to Nelahozeves or Veltrusy castles, concluding the day in the historic wine town at the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe Rivers.

Overnight in Melnik.

Day 3: Melnik – Litomerice (31 miles/52 km) Today's stage unfolds through the serene Elbe region, characterized by its fertile lands. After passing the Libechov Castle, you'll arrive in the town of Roudnice nad Labem, where you can admire its old church and castle. A significant stop includes the massive Terezin Fortress, offering insights into military architecture and serving as a poignant reminder of World War II. Day 4: Litomerice – Decin (31 miles/52 km) Today you head to the enchanting region of the Czech Central Mountains. As you pedal, the ancient volcanic landscape will rise around your river valley route, with medieval castles casting their shadows from the slender peaks of long-extinct cones. Follow the ancient trade route along the Labe River, connecting the Czech and Saxon Kingdoms, with your symbolic entry point into the Czech Central Mountains being the Porta Bohemica.

Continue along this historic route, and you'll reach the charming village of Žernoseky, renowned for its wine cultivation and the presence of a Baroque chateau. Moving forward, your next points of interest include the modern Masaryk flood-gates and the time-honored ruins of Střekov Castle, majestically perched above the city of Ústí. Take a moment in Ústí to marvel at the most off-center tower north of the Alps, its tilt attributed to the heavy bombing at the end of World War II.

As you pedal onward, Velké Březno Castle awaits, serving as a splendid testament to Empire architecture in the Czech Lands. Your bike route concludes in the city of Děčín, visually dominated by a chateau seated high atop a rocky perch. Your journey unfolds with a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and architectural wonders, providing you with a memorable exploration of the Czech Central Mountains.

Day 5: Decin - Bad Schandau/Krippen, (16 miles/25 km cycling | 3 - 9 miles/5 - 15 km hiking) Today, you will be crossing the border to Germany. The bike path through the Czech and Saxon Switzerland National Park will lead you alongside amazing sandstone cliffs and pillars. Upon reaching Hřensko, you can dedicate the remaining time to hike across this exquisite terrain.

You have a few options to choose from. You can hike up to the largest natural arch in Central Europe, Pravčická brána (Gate of Pravčice), offering an admirable view of the surrounding area. Alternatively, opt for a relaxed stroll and gondola ride through an untouched part of the Kamenice River valley. A third option is to combine these two hikes into one trip. Conclude the day with a short bike ride and cross the border to Germany in the lovely spa town of Bad Schandau. For those not interested in hiking, consider spending half a day with spa procedures or at the swimming pool in this town

Day 6: Bad Schandau – Dresden (25 miles/40 km) As you set off from Bad Schandau, the picturesque landscapes along the Elbe River will accompany you on your journey.

A significant highlight of your bike tour will be the Königstein Fortress, majestically perched atop a table mountain overlooking the Elbe River. This well-preserved fortress, often referred to as the "Saxon Bastille," boasts a rich history dating back over 750 years. The fortress served various purposes throughout the centuries, functioning as a medieval castle, a state prison, and a refuge for the Saxon royal family during times of war.

Day 7: Dresden There is probably no other town in Germany that better symbolizes the turbulent history of this country and shows many centuries of cultural and architectural boom combined with religious freedom and economic prosperity. A short stint of Nazism was followed by punishment in the form of the biggest bombing during World War II, which turned almost the entire city into ruins overnight. We can arrange tour guiding services or help you to extend your stay.

Surface and terrain

This route follows mostly flat terrain with occasional hills. The route is on mostly dedicated bike trails, and where it runs on roads, there are marked bike lanes.

There is only one short up hill on the first day. The rest of the route leads along the Vltava and Elbe rivers. This trail is recommended for families with children.

Great views

My friend and I did the self-guided tour, which we loved. The hill on the first day was rough, but after that the ride was almost always flat. The views were varied - rivers, mountains, castles, sometimes through small villages or fields, but mostly along thewater. The guide provided was just what we needed - enough detail for navigating (supplemented by the app) and recommendations of things to see and where to eat. The bikes were sturdy touring bikes - not light, but able to handle the bumps of the road. We did not have any mechanical trouble, so we didn´t call on the company for any bike support. The app showing the route was very useful, although it was mildly annoying that it didn´t track your location - you had to manually scroll the map throughout the day. I think this is an app option that you can choose to pay for, though. The hotels booked for us were always lovely and clean, and the breakfasts provided lots of options, even for the one vegetarian in our group. I would recommend this tour in a heartbeat!

Nice ride for cultural imersion

Nice ride between two wonderful cities. Mainly along bike paths with the occasional road bike lane and urban, on-the-street moments when riding within larger cities. Ride has a manageable climb the first day but otherwise, not too much climbing unless you decide to embark on some optional side visits along the way. Outside of Prague, few people spoke good English, so have a good translator app with you. One member of our group had to ride the train for part of the journey and it was difficult to get him a ticket not speaking Czech. We were able to find a German-speaking ticket vendor and someone in our group could speak German. Just be aware of the language barrier in this part of Czechia. Parts of the trail on the first couple days were a bit muddy and more like a mountain bike trails. Took a bit more effort to traverse these sections. Hotels were very nice and the towns we stayed in were as well. Didn't see any other Americans along the ride. The food was very good and most places were even able to accommodate a vegan that was riding with us. We did have some mechanical issues with our bicycles that were addressed by the local tour company. Used the vendor for airport transfers and those were perfect. Navigation involved downloading Mapy.cz on our smartphones and uploading their trail maps. Maps were accurate and more or less essential for an optimum riding experience. Our hotel room the last two evenings, and the dinner we pre-paid for with biketours.com were not pre-paid by the vendor at arrival so we needed to pay for it. Currently working with them to get that refunded. If you're looking for less-traveled, easy/intermediate ride, and you are ok with navigating the language barrier, this is a good choice.

Nice trip, but some issues.

The trip overall was good. The hotels were from very nice to adequate, and the weather was good for biking. Luggage handling was perfect.

The issue we had was with the bikes. In our case the bikes we rented were delivered to our hotel. I had emailed specific instructions about my wife's bike set-up regarding saddle height and handle bar height. When the bikes arrived we noticed that the saddle could not be adjusted low enough for her comfort. We had to call the AVE rep and he had to bring a different saddle stem to fix that problem. Another problem was with my bike. The frame size was too small for me, and the handle bars were too low for comfort. Since we had already lost time to get my wife's bike corrected, I decided that I could manage with the bike that was delivered. That was my mistake! Half way into the trip the front telescopic forks collapsed and I had to ride nose down, which was very uncomfortable and outright dangerous. We managed to get it pumped up at a bike shop, but they lost pressure again while biking.

Last year we had none of these problems. The big difference was that last year we had to collect our bikes at the rental shop the day before. This gave us the opportunity to have both bikes adjusted to the right settings, and to make sure that they were of the correct frame size.

I don't need to stress how important a reliable and well fitting bike is for these bike tours. I suggest that you make it essential that the bikes are collected at the rental site the day before the trips start. This will give the participants the opportunity to make essential corrections. Myself, for our next trip I will insist that we will collect the bikes at the rental shop the day before the trip starts, and that they are reliable and well fitted bikes. I think it is wise if you make this part of your overall policy as well.

Beautiful (and manageable) trip

Following the Vltava and Elbe rivers, with mostly excellent bike paths and a reasonable amount of miles per day, made for a lovely honeymoon trip! The Czech countryside was about to hit fall colors, and chestnuts were aplenty. The bikes they provided were in great shape (Trek and Specialized), and the gps files worked well. Highly recommend showing up at least two or three days early to spend extra time in Prague and get used to the time change. We weren’t able to take advantage of many of the optional side visits and biergardens along the way because many were closed already for the season, but we still enjoyed passing through small/tiny towns. And we made sure to pack our own wine and cheese for breaks! In the high season, we imagine it must be a much different scene. Overall, really enjoyed the trip and would recommend it for those who are looking for a relaxing vacation.

Fun way to see a beautiful area

Really enjoyed the trip. Beautiful route getting into rolling hills although not difficult to bike with great off-road bike paths almost the whole way. Hotels were great with plentiful breakfasts.

Great Ride!!

This was a great ride along well marked trails. The E-bikes were in great condition and easy to ride. We spent several extra days in Prague and rode to Karlštejn Castle. The ride to Karlstejn was a good segue into the ride from Prague to Dresden.

The hotels were all very nice even though several were not air conditioned most had fans that made the stays comfortable. Each of the stopover towns had their unique charm and points of interest. Several of the shorter ride days were filled with great options. Once we got to Litomerice there was plenty of time to explore Terezin Fortress. The day we rode to Bad Schanda we spent most of the day in Hřensko and hiked to visit the largest natural land bridge in Europe.

There were ample places to stop along the entire route for breaks and refreshments. We met many wonderful people from all over Europe doing the same ride and had a great time visiting with them. The package was well put together and fun to ride.

Needs a bit more sophistication

1. There was no GPS. They insisted it was easy and we had maps, but they were in Czech and hard to read and the street were rarely marked.

2. I had two flats within the first mile ( two more to come). They need to put liners in their tires. Our pump was also so bad that after a lot of work it was still too low to ride. Usually other riders would stop and let us borrow their more superior pumps.

They delivered a new bike in Prague because my brakes were also broken. To get to their delivery car I had to go down a wet slope and across a divided highway. I fell on a wet grid and hurt my knee bad and ripped the entire butt out of my only pair of bike shorts for the whole trip ( remember the missing luggage). This. Detour meant we couldn’t ever seem to find the bike bath again and since we had a late start of 3:30, we rode hard for six straight hours. It was extremely dangerous after dark and we had no food out in the farmland. I was using my phone to try to find the towns with path.

I complained about the promise of a GPS and not having one. So they forwarded maps to use on a a special app on my phone, but that took a day to understand where we were on the map. I got a GPS the third day, but it didn’t have a charge and the charging unit didn’t go with the unit I had.

4. Not only did we have flats, but my kickstand didn’t work and more importantly, the fender supports in the front was missing some rubber tips. That meant when I put down my foot when stopping and the wheel was turned at all, the snipped off metal of the support would slash my inside knees badly. This happened a lot and was very painful and bloody.

5. Several of the hotels had some real problems with super warm rooms, (no A/C anywhere over there), loud streets, and no ice. Two at least had fans. the nice hotel in Bad Shandeau put us alone up on the 4th floor and said we were to leave the windows closed because of smoke from the fires, which was blowing the opposite direction. Our attic room was well over 90F w no ventilation. We opened the narrow attic windows anyhow The best hotel was a little pensioner on the first night. That frog even gave us ice for our water bottles. It was a very hot week.

6. The path ran right by a forest fire before Bad Schandau. Breathing was bad and stinky.

They guys were generally responsive, though the main guy was on vacation. We are fairly unde manding most of time, changed our own FOUR flat tires, tried to find our way, dealt w the bike faults, but feel they were tired of us the first day. In fact he said if we were ‘one of their clienta it would be different. If they took the money from you, we WERE their client!

Overall, it was a bit disappointing on the bike side, though the river is lovely and biking is still the best way to see a country!   SHOW MORE

Awesome Scenic Ride

This easy ride provided scenic views of castles and countryside along an easily marked trail and river without a lot of car traffic. The City stops a long the way were quaint and friendly and there was always a place to stop for beer with fellow travelers. I would highly recommend this trip especially on an E-Bike!

A great tour that exceeded expectations. We had by far the best tour guide as compared to all previous bike trips (5). Justin was attentive, thoughtful, and full of facts concerning culture, history, and geography. Most of the trip was spent on dedicated bike paths along the river with only a few hill challenges. We had a couple of hikes in national parks among beautiful sandstone cliffs and towers. The bikes were quite new and well maintained. Evening meals were uniformly excellent and the hotels were nice mid-range accommodations (with the exception of an opulent chatteau on the first night). Champagne with strawberries at the end of the last day's ride in Dresden was a nice touch.

Cycling is the best way to experience the and feel the atmosphere, and Enjoy , the trip was excellent, the local company was very supportive, the signs on the way was clear and the view was absolutely amazing. Great bike ride...mostly on paved bike paths

AVE provide a very good experience. Would definitely use them again. The trip listed a couple of short hills. There were two hills on the first day and they were steeper than I expected and also longer. That is just a minor thing and in no way diminished the trip. The bicycles were very good and their initial service was great...however, I would have preferred that they bring the bicycles the day before we started the trip instead of the morning of the trip. It meant that we started about 2 hours later than we would have. That also is a minor thing and didn’t, take away from the trip. All of the hotels were excellent.

This was a fun tour overall. I enjoyed biking along the rivers, it made for a scenic trip. A few of the towns we overnighted in were specatacular.

Tour Great/Less scenic than others

Loved the company, the equipment, and the guides! This is our third bike trip in Europe and we were on a very specific timetable. That being said, the itinerary was the only one available for our dates, and wasn't as scenic as other tours we have taken. A lot of the river paths were alongside industrial areas (as many river paths are), so some of the scenery wasn't ideal. That being said, the hotels and the meals were amazing, and the sites that we visited were interesting!

Fantastic Ride from Prague to Dresden

Great fun, bonus being that it mostly followed the Elbe River downstream to Prague so wasn't very strenuous, just a few hills here and there. Our guide Milan was great - definitely worth having along as (1) he spoke Czech which none of us did ! and (2) added in some side tours which would have almost certainly missed had he not been along. Also, our support lady Jitke was really helpful and very useful to have on hand, she moved our luggage every day effortlessly ! Great scenery, great beer (some of the wine was a bit ordinary) and great food. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Prague to Dresden Along the Vitava and Elbe Rivers July 30-July 7th 2017

Overall great trip! Guides were great. Needed better handouts (not self guided for guided tour) and would cut the brewery where you pour your own beer.

Beautiful, Romantic, Historic, Adventurous

This trip was a blast! It was especially cool to see how the geography and culture changed as we moved out of Czech Republic and into Germany. This tour has a little bit of everything to satisfy everyone's tastes. Our favorites were the last two days: Hrensko, thermal bathes in Bad Schandau, Fortress in Koenigstein (well worth the hike to the top), and Bastei in Oberrathen (do the hike and visit the medieval fortress). Also, as far as navigation, we used the maps.me app and mounted our smart phone to the bike, which made getting around super easy. We had turn by turn directions throughout the tour.

A couple tips I wished the tour company had provided, major sites along the route are closed on Mondays. We traveled from Litomorice to Decin on Monday. Unfortunately the Strekov castle and restaurant was closed (we found that out after climbing to the top of the hill). Additionally when we reached Velke Brezno to visit the brewery we found out it also is closed on Mondays. Therefore, if a day of your tour falls on a Monday it would be good to prioritize scheduling one of the hiking days (e.g. Decin to Bad Schandau or Bad Schandau to Dresden). In general, it would be nice to know in advance what days the points of interest are closed, so the group can manage their time at other sites better. If the tour company does not provide this info, I would recommend looking it up in advance.

Good variety, just enough challenge, 2 amazing cities

We really enjoyed this trip — this was our first guided tour. Overall, it was a comfortable pace, a few big hills but lots of flat areas, and plenty of stops.

Most of the riding was on paved bike paths, but some bits were on roads with cars, where the guides kept everyone safe and comfortable. Some of the riding was on dirt roads, but this was only a challenge one time, when the road was muddy and slightly uphill. Climbing big hills was always rewarded with amazing views & castles. Our group did all of the challenges, even if they had to walk and push their bikes up part of the hill. It was fine with everyone, and no one took advantage of the van (but you can if you want).

The route took us along the rivers, through small picturesque villages and towns, farmland and forests. The poppies were in bloom when we went, in early June. We took quick ferry rides across the river a few times, which was fun.

The biking started around 9am after a big breakfast. There were plenty of stops, snacks at the van by the side of a road, and coffee at a nice cafe in a beautiful town square. We would usually get to the hotel around 5-6pm and dinner was around 7pm. There was one day with less riding, where we had the option of spending the afternoon visiting the “Bohemian Switzerland National Park” (in the Czech Republic) or spending the time in Bad Spandau — a nice town on the river with hot baths and spa and cafes. We hiked and it was gorgeous.

All of the guides were Czech, and spoke English, some were fluent. They helped translate in restaurants and hotels when needed. They gave us lots of info about sites along the way. One was a “physical geographer” and had lots facts about the geology of the area. We had discussions about the communist history of both Czechoslovakia and Eastern Germany. One guide would ride with us, and one drove the van, and they switched off every day. They were professional, polite, always willing to help — no request was too big or too small. They had funny Czech senses of humor.

The accommodations were different each night, ranging from very fancy to basic, but always located in a beautiful historic town. Lunch and dinner locations were well chosen, the food was always good. We had lots of local specialties, and tried the local beers and wines. There was a vegetarian and a gluten-free person in our group, and their needs were accommodated.

Wonderful way to see the Czech Republic

We did the self guided trip (more on that option later) and the actual bicycle trip was fantastic. The cities we stayed in were great - Melnik was amazing - and the route along the Elbe was just stunning. The experience was just wonderful. Food, beer, wine, lodgings, villages - all perfect. The only caution is if you opt for the self guided trip. Although the bike paths were generally well marked, it was sort of stressful always having to watch for the twists and turns. A guide would have made the whole experience far more relaxing and enjoyable. And we would not have found ourselves lost quite so often.

A lovely ride down the Vltava and Elbe Rivers

Cycling along the major rivers of Europe is always a pleasure and this trip was no exception.  Much of the path is asphalt-paved and hugs the river's edge.  There are several small ferries and some bridges which allow cyclists to cycle on either side of the Vlatava and Elbe as one goes north from Prague towards Dresden.  
     The bicycles supplied were well suited for the tour and the GPS, cue sheets and maps guided you on each day's ride. There are a few places where the path has been damaged or destroyed by floods so there are a few steep hills and "single track" sections to navigate.  Our lodgings, except in Prague and Dresden, were always in the historic city centers so it was easy to walk around and learn about each place.
     Along the way, we discovered the history of these rivers and the importance of our stopping points  - Melnik, Terezin/Litomerice, Decin, and Bad Schandau.  We also had booked an extra day both in Prague and Dresden and easily could have spent more time in these special cities.  We found the careful reconstruction of the historic buildings in these cities to be especially impressive.

Incredible Experience

This was my first bike tour and I cannot say enough positive things about my experience. Our group was small with 5 bikers and 2 guides. The other bikers were very friendly and we all got along well. The guides were incredible and I could not have asked for more supportive, friendly, helpful people to enjoy this experience with. The accommodations each night were very comfortable and in perfectly safe areas.

While it was definitely a physically demanding trip, it was attainable and we all completed the trip perfectly fine. While I do bike regularly, I'm certainly not the ideal specimen of fitness. I bike around 30-50 miles a week and found the trip a little more difficult than I anticipated. But again, I would not let this discourage you from going.

The guides were all from the Prague/Dresden area and so were able to share historical and relevant information about the sites and cities along the way. This trip was more than a bike tour--it was also a cultural tour. In addition, the sites are absolutely breathtaking. I'm giving myself a few weeks to recover and then planning my next one!

Self-guided Prague to Vienna Greenways bike path tour: Fairytale lovers delight! This self-guided cycling tour will take you through the castle lands of Europe on the back of a bike. Pure Adventures Tours has curated a self-guided itinerary through one of the art centers of the world to a land brimming with Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance architecture. As well as feasting on the architectural delights of Bavarian Europe, this bicycle vacation leads the traveler through the forests of the Podyji National Park, to the Czech-Moravian highlands, to the lakes surrounding Telc. Ride along the Dyje and Vltava Rivers and then into the region’s famous wine country: the Tuscany of Moravia. On the famous Greenways cycling path, you are sure to enjoy the most beautiful parts of central and Eastern Europe!

Departure & Return Location

Tour starts in Prague and finishes in Vienna. Arrival pick up from Prague Airport or central Prague is included. Departure on own.

Day 1 Arrival to Prague

Today is your arrival day in Prague and a chance to get adjusted to the time change. The day is yours to explore, sitesee, and get to know this beautiful city. If you would like to have more than one night here, please inquire at the time of booking.

Overnight: Prague

Day 2 Transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov, optional ride

This morning after breakfast, you will have a welcome briefing followed by a transfer from Prague to Cesky Krumlov (185 km = 111 miles by minibus or car). Once you arrive to Cesky Krumlov, you will check in at the hotel, and have the rest of the day to do some sightseeing and dinner out on your own. If you want to do some cycling today, there will be some options presented at your tour orientation. Or, there is a nice walkup to Klet Hill which, at 1079 masl, will give you a great perspective and view of the area!

Day 3 Cesky Krumlov to Trebon: 53-63 km / 32-38 mi

This morning, you have the option to visit of the famous castle and garden – highly recommended! Then, you can choose between two different rides: one is 53 km and the other is 63 km. Your route leads you through the beautiful hilly landscape surrounding Cesky Krumlov, which is full of gorgeous scenery! The closer you get to the Trebon area, the flatter the landscape becomes. The ride is still quite scenic and ends in Trebon, a well-known spa resort village. In Trebon, check in to your hotel and if you like, you can visit the Schwarzenberg Tomb. If you would prefer to relax in a spa, we can arrange a massage, spa, or other services at Trebon’s wellness centre. In the evening, we recommend a walk around the Renaissance town; there is much to see!

Day 4 Trebon to Telc: 78 km / 47 mi

This morning you have the option to tour the State ChateauTrebon, a well-preserved Renaissance-style mansion with lovely English gardens. Once you are ready to start your day of cycling, you will join the trail, winding along many ponds and lakes. This type of landscape is typical of this region and very beautiful. Continue on to Perslak, the most northern point of Austria. As you follow the border with Austria along the Greenways trail, pass through Nova Bystrice, where you can stop for lunch. From Nova Bystrice, the trail will take you through the forests of the Natural Park called Czech Canada, characterized by vast forest and rock formations, similar to that found in Canada. While there, you may wish to visit the 13th century Castle Landštejn. Your day ends in Telc, a Renaissance town registered on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. Houses on the main square in Telc have facades decorated in typical Renaissance sgraffito, forming the best-preserved Renaissance square in the entire Czech Republic. Once here, you will enjoy comparing and reflecting on the differences between the towns of Trebon, Cesky Krumlov, and Telc.

Day 5 Telc to Vranov: 54 km / 33 mi

This morning, you have the option to tour a beautiful old chateau in Telc, known as one of the finest examples and gems of Moravian and Renaissance architecture. Once you are ready to start your day of cycling, you head out and ride through several charming villages, typical for this area of the country. Take your time and enjoy this beautiful region of South Moravia, with gently rolling hills and a landscape that is so peaceful and serene that you will feel like you are in a movie! Your cycling ends at Vranov, a small historical village situated near the Topľa River and the Ondava River.

Day 6 Vranov to Znojmo: 32-38 km / 20-23 mi

Today you will leave Vranov and continue cycling on the Greenways trail, following the river Dyje and the southern Czech border with Austria. This very beautiful route takes you through Dyje National Park, one of the Czech Republic’s four national parks. It contains vast natural forests along the deep Dyje River valley. This park also boasts a biome that is extremely well-preserved and is often cited as being one of the most unique in Central Europe. Znojmo, known as the gateway to the region of South Moravia, is a region rich in wine production. Check in to your Znojmo hotel and in the evening, take some time to walk round the historical centre of Znojmo.

Day 7 Znojmo to Mikulov: 62-72 km / 37-43 mi

Today is a day dedicated to cycling through this stunning region, with flatlands and rolling vineyards. This area is known for its traditional vine-growing and there are many wine cellars that can be found here. Mikulov is a town rich in history and has a wonderful historical square. You will also want to visit the Mikulov Castle and museum, which contains a great deal of historical artifacts related to the area’s wine production, including the very large Renaissance wine barrel, dating from 1643. This evening, enjoy some time relaxing and exploring this beautiful town.

Day 8 Mikulov to Vienna: 45 km / 27 mi

Today is an exciting day as you cross the border at the Mikulov border checkpoint and spend the rest of the day in Austria! The landscape is quite pretty, with more vineyards, bright green fields, and small villages dotting the trail. Your cycling ends in Mistelbach (45 km), where you will have a private transfer taking you directly to your hotel in Vienna. (You can also choose to meet the driver in Poysdorf (25 km, but this option must be arranged in advance.) Arrive to your Vienna hotel and enjoy the evening exploring this historically rich and beautiful city!

Day 9 Departure Day

Events in Cesky Krumlov:  

• Festival of Chamber music (end of June – early July) Festival of classical music with the longest tradition in Cesky Krumlov. Part of the festival comprises ‘Music through the Ages,’ where music can be heard on the tour route of Cesky Krumlov Castle.
• The International Music Festival (mid-July to mid-August) The largest of Cesky Krumlov´s festivals. It has been going since 1992 and includes music of all periods with the participation of renowned instrumentalists, singers, chamber ensembles, choirs, and symphony orchestras.
• The Summer Festivities of Early Music (July) Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music played on original musical instruments where the original musical sources and the customs of interpretation of the period are respected.
•   Jazz at the Summer´s end (early September) International jazz and alternative music festival. In addition to traditional venues, the spontaneity of cafes, small bars, squares, and unusual spaces are used for performances.

Events in Prague:

• International Prague Spring Music Festival (May – June) International music festival featuring orchestral and theater series, church concerts, recitals, morning concerts chamber music, and symphony orchestras.
• Khamoro   (May) Roma Festival strives to show the richness and complexity of Roma culture and traditions. The festival is divided into 3 sections: professional, cultural, and media. The festival strives on the one hand to present Roma culture, art, and traditions as an integral part of Czech, European, and world culture.

This was my fourth bike trip in Europe: Provence, Slovenia, Croatian Islands and Salzburg to Prague. When people ask me why I bike I say you can see the “beside the road” flowers, smell the environment, hear the animals say hello, and find your way with maps, gps’s, compass. It is a wonderful adventure. We had fantastic turn by turn directions and sufficient maps. I had a problem with my bike, called Tom and had another one delivered for the next day. Wonderful trip…I loved it.
