Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, paris – relaxing on parisian squares.

It is easy to get kids excited about Paris as there are so many sights that everyone has seen in photos and postcards. Touch down in the French capital and your hotel is not far from the Eiffel Tower, and just a couple of Metro stops from the Arc de Triomphe. But there is more to Paris than that as you take a few steps from your hotel, and can admire the River Seine with a stroll along the water, admiring the bridges and street musicians. Breathe in Paris and the elegance on the streets, and then find yourself in a Parisian square from which to watch the afternoon drift into the evening as this is a city where you are royally entertained merely by sitting at a cafe and soaking it all in.

What's Included:

Paris – Monuments of Paris City Tour

With this handcrafted tour, your children will not need to wait long to see the Champs-Elysee and the Eiffel Tower as you head off on a private tour of the Parisian monuments and come face to face with many of the famous images. Admire the ornamentation of Notre Dame, and then compare it to the Gothic wonder of Sainte-Chapelle. Check out Sacre Coeur, and then go for coffee in the Montmartre neighborhood. Spend two hours in Conciergerie, the incredible medieval palace where the stories turn to Marie Antoinette. Your family can keep exploring as long as you would like,  and while the legs may be a little weary later in the afternoon, Paris is packed with charming little places to rest and relax as a family.

Paris – Chocolate and Charms on a Family Tour for Foodies

Paris can turn the fussiest of eaters into a food lover as the city is a treat for the palate with everything from pungent cheeses to macaroons and sweet treats. By focusing your explorations on food, you will dive into local neighborhoods that are as memorable for their atmosphere as they are for their architecture. Again, you will have a private guide and the pace of the tour is flexible, dependent on your mood rather than any prescribed schedule. Linger in places you like, experiment in the local markets, and take your time – on a family tour it is usually better to see fewer places at a relaxed pace then try to cram everything in.

Start today in a local market, going on the hunt for the best raw produce, trying out delicacies that come from across France ranging from cheeses to flavored sausages, from truffles to garlic. Then take a walk through Saint-Germain, a quaint little neighborhood of 17th- and 18th-century streets. Bakery smells mingle with sweeter aromas, guiding you towards a famous chocolatier. You can all get your fingers sticky here, trying out handmade treats and perhaps trying the macaroons. End the tour in a typical Parisian bistro, where you try more cheeses and nibbles, some of them paired with wine or sparkling grape juice. You will be full and finished by mid-afternoon, and there are so many places you could visit later in the day.

Paris – The Louvre and a Street Art Hunt for Kids

There is more to Paris’s art scene than the Mona Lisa, but that evocative stare is an excellent way to get the children into the Louvre. With your local art guide, you will take a look through the galleries with two hours enough in this grand museum as long as you know where to go and what to skip. After the oil canvases and historical paintings, you will discover another side to the city’s art scene with one that would probably make the impressionists exclaim in horror: street art. Epic murals have been cropping up all around the city and you will go out on the hunt with your children leading the way as you tick off cryptic clues and answers. As with the previous days, your evening will be free, and your guide can recommend family-friendly restaurants where the food is sublime, but the style is not so serious.

Paris – Up the Eiffel Tower and Final Impressions of Paris

Skip the queues and head up the Eiffel Tower this morning, an icon that is good to keep in reserve for your last day in the city. The elevator journey is famous, and the views are legendary, out over the Seine and the city you have come to love. This day is kept free for your family to decide on a plan, perhaps visiting the palace in Versailles or another one of the many engaging art galleries. Simply finding a little square and a cafe terrace is part of the attraction as well, coffee and a croissant along with uninterrupted time together. Paris is much easier to get around than people give credit, with the Seine a great way to navigate where you are. The metro is efficient and connects all the essential stops – you can even disembark for a photo with the Arc de Triomphe then take the escalator back down and continue your journey.

Rome – Treasures of Rome Around Your Hotel

Fly Paris to Rome direct and check in to the Eternal City. The city feels so different from Paris with the contrasts really quite stark. From croissants and chocolates, it is now to gelato and pizza, old treats that waft aromas down pre-medieval streets. The architecture has also changed with many memoirs to Ancient Rome found just footsteps from your hotel. Rome’s traffic can be chaotic and off-putting to families, but you rarely spend any time on the busy roads. Instead, for most of the five days, you will be in the ancient heart of the city where some of the lanes are hardly wide enough for scooters. You can stay within the old pedestrianized areas, rarely more than a few minutes walk to an old piazza. So check into the hotel and check out what’s around the hotel today, including the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps.

Rome – Pizza Making Class and Underground Rome

The smells will guide you into a small pizza kitchen, where you all will put on your aprons and learn the art of making pizza. In a neighborhood of central Rome, you will gather around a wooden table and start to assemble your creations. The most important thing comes first – decorating a chef’s hat and looking like a professional pizza maker. Then, it is down to business as you roll your own crust, create a homemade sauce, and then slather on the prosciutto and mozzarella before sliding it into the wood-fired oven. It is obviously gelato for dessert, and your whole cooking lesson is accompanied by stories and songs.

Leave the pizza restaurant incredibly full as it is impossible to leave a single slice when it’s your own creation. Move next to walk it all off by delving into underground Rome, the spooky catacombs your afternoon destination. Thousands upon thousands of bones fill these ancient tombs, accompanied by stories that cover over two millennia of history. Skulls and femurs, mummies, and skeletons, these enormous piles of bones are pretty baffling to behold. There are over 40 of these catacombs, and you will visit a series of interlinking burial places to learn of the ancient rituals and early Christianity. Admire the decorations of the Crypt of the Capuchins and Church of St. Clemens as well as the subterranean levels as you wonder how many souls are beneath the ground in Rome.

Rome – The Colosseum Through the Ages and Gladiator School

Come back above the ground today, and the monument you will have already admired from the outside is yours to explore. Step into the Colosseum, and you will sense the history. You can easily picture the gladiators as you feel the hallowed stone and dust beneath your feet. You can see how the Colosseum has changed over the centuries thanks to new virtual reality glasses, and with your private tour, you can also step beyond the red rope and explore the third tier of this great amphitheater, the best place to have Colosseum photos without other people in the background. While the details excite, it is the scale of this monument that is most impressive.

You will be walking amid history in the Colosseum, and then reenact history with an afternoon spent at Gladiator School. Your children will be put through their paces, training in the same way gladiators used to do in a way that is both lovely and often humorous for you to watch. It is not really about conflict and sword fights, although the kids will put gladiatorial costumes on and go through a few mock battles as they see how ancient Rome planned their battles. Your children will be tired after a day as a gladiator, so find a beautiful piazza, grab a drink or two and watch the world go by. Rome, like Paris, is a wonderful city for people watching and relaxing into a quiet rhythm.

Rome – A Family Journey Through Roman Mythology

Minotaur the monster has the head of a bull and a human body while Athena and Dionysus stand proud in statuesque form. Cyclops looks across at you, and in the world of Greek and Roman mythology, the deities are as crazy as they sound. You can spend the morning on a treasure hunt, ticking off tales of Jason Grace, Jupiter, Athena, Hades, Aphrodite and so many more. It really is a genuinely fun tour, a treasure hunt through a huge museum that is packed with statues and murals to the gods. A morning of mythology is followed by a free afternoon, today a great time to venture beyond the heart of Rome. Consider the seaside ruins of Ostia-Antica, maybe a neighborhood like Trastevere, or even the high-speed train to Tuscany or Tivoli for the afternoon.

Rome – Seeing the Vatican and Relaxing in the Italian Capital

A treasure hunt is also a good way to keep your kids engaged in the Vatican City, involving them in conversation and something fun as you all go about discovering some of the world’s most famous artists. Michelangelo, Leonardo, Caravaggio, and Raphael are all included, and there are so many legendary paintings and frescoes to see throughout the Vatican Museums. Take a special passage from the Sistine Chapel to St Peter’s Basilica, and then admire how the Swiss Guards protect the holy staircase for the Pope. And of course, there is St. Peter’s Square, and of all the piazzas in Italy, there is nothing like this one in the Vatican for a grand place to rest after the artistic treasure hunt. The afternoon and evening are left free, and as with all days in Paris and Rome, the choice of restaurants is endless.

Rome – Departure

With one last morning in Italy, enjoy one more cappuccino and the last chance to spend an hour on a cafe terrace, watching the world of Rome unfold before you. An airport transfer brings your tour to an end with a smooth ride back to catch your international flight.

  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an  ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code LPR.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in London and depart from Rome (or Madrid on the tour extension).
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchase their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost if they are arriving or departing on the standard day.
  • When you arrive in London, a driver from a private chauffeur service will be standing at the arrival gate with your name on a message board. If you do not see your driver, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Physical Activity Level

This is a moderate physical activity-level tour. You can expect casual walks and plenty of time to explore throughout the course of the tour.

  • About 1-3 hours of bus time daily

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • European train stations typically operate similarly to airports where security measures, such as baggage and body scanners, are common. Platforms are often spread out across large distances and require travelers to manage their luggage on escalators or stairs. Porterage services are not offered on train transfers and luggage storage on trains is extremely limited. Please keep in mind that trains may only be stopping at the stations for a few minutes; speed with loading and unloading may be imperative
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one personal item per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which include a train and flight.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights. Please note that your included on-tour flights may have more restrictive baggage limits.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels, airports, and train stations.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto storage racks, sometimes above the seats.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.

  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.

  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.

  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.

  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try. Sip afternoon tea with delicious finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods in London for the ultimate in English tradition.
  • Modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options for the adventurous palate include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisine.
  • For a picnic with French flair, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, pâtés, cured meats, fresh-baked bread, and fruit. In the cities, sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, while mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from cafes. In restaurants, the prix fixe option is a popular way to enjoy a set three- or four-course menu for a good price.
  • Although lunch is generally served from noon until 2pm in France, dinner is served from 7:30pm onward. Those wishing to eat earlier can stop at a cafe, where light entrées and sandwiches are available throughout the afternoon and evening.
  • Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily's arancini).
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • In Spain, on the tour extension, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Pound sterling in the United Kingdom and the euro in France and Italy (and Spain on the tour extension).
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, but you may choose to order some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • The United Kingdom is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • France and Italy (and Spain on the tour extension) are 1 hour ahead of GMT and 6 hours ahead of ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm in the United Kingdom and 6pm in France and Italy (and Spain on the tour extension).
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.

Rome and Paris in One Trip: Two of Europe’s Top Destinations

Janice Waugh

April 1, 2019 by Janice Waugh

paris and italy tours

The streets of Rome.

Rome and Paris in one trip!

That's hitting Europe on a grand scale.

The romantic cities of Rome and Paris, the Eternal City and the City of Light, are two of Europe's hot spots.

They are rich in travel experiences but they can also be expensive, busy, and overwhelming.

In this post I want to give you my best advice on both cities plus your many options for travel between the two.

I have been to both Rome and Paris a number of times. On my most recent trip I went with  Monograms Travel,  a company that takes care of all the logistics and some of the planning for you. You can read what that experience was like in this post as well. But first, here's what you need to know to do these two great cities in one trip, completely solo.

The Best Time to Go to Paris and Rome

Given that Paris and Rome are top destinations in Europe, they will be less busy and somewhat less expensive if you go during the shoulder season. This means April and May or late September to early November.

Rome and Paris during the Shoulder Seasons

  • Crowds . The earlier you go in the spring and the later you go in the fall, the less crowded both cities will be with other tourists.
  • In Rome, average daytime temperatures are 68°F in April and 75°F in May, 73°F in October and 64°F in November.
  • In Paris, average daytime temperatures are 61°F in April and 68°F in May, 61°F in October and 52°F in November.
  • Hours of daylight . Spring is a bit better than fall. The later you go in the spring and the earlier you go in the fall, the more daylight you will find. April and May in Rome will give you 12 and 13 hours of daylight respectively. Late September to early November will give you 12 to 10 1/2 hours of daylight respectively.

Which City First: Rome or Paris?

Sometimes travel itineraries are affected by how easy the destinations are to navigate, how interesting each destination is, or how familiar the food is as sometimes people want to ease into new tastes. But Paris and Rome are not affected by these factors. They are well set for tourists, both are fascinating, and the food, well, it's incomparably delicious and familiar. So which city should you go to first? Here are my thoughts.

  • Historical relevance . Given that the ancient sites of Rome were built in what is called the classical architectural style and that much of Paris was redeveloped by Haussmann between 1850 and 1870 in the neoclassical style, I would go to Rome first and then Paris.
  • Weather . If you're spending long periods of time in each city, weather might make a difference. If going in spring, I'd go to Rome first and then Paris but if traveling in fall, I'd go to Paris first and then Rome. However, given that most people will do the two cities in a week or two, it's actually not possible to predict which will offer better weather.

Rome and Paris Basic 7-day Itinerary

Whichever city you go to first, here's a basic itinerary. It's based on one week and my basic principle that you can't spend less than three nights in any location on a trip. If you have more time, spend it. There is so much to enjoy in both these cities beyond the major sights. Settle in. Relax and enjoy what the locals do.

  • Day 1 – Arrive in first city. You'll have a half day to get oriented. Perhaps take an overview tour of the city.
  • Days 2, 3 – This will give you two full days to explore.
  • Day 4 – Travel to the other city during the day (see below). Half day to get oriented.
  • Day 5, 6 – Two full days to explore the city.
  • Day 7 – Return home.

Thello is a train company that specializes in travel between Italy and France.

How to Travel Between Rome and Paris

There are 1,400 km between Paris and Rome. That's approximately 14 hours of driving. While it's a pretty spectacular drive, if you don't have much time on your trip, there are better options to get between the two cities.

  • Overnight train . Thello overnight trains  run between Paris and Rome in both directions and will get you to your destination at around 9:00 am. They go from city center to city center and save you the price of one night in a hotel. The basic fare is about €200, however, you can upgrade or downgrade using the drop-down arrow beside the price (see image above). For example, for €117 you could go between the two cities in a regular seat between Milan and Rome but in a couchette for 6 women for the overnight portion between Milan and Paris. You could also upgrade to a private cabin between Paris and Milan and pay a total of €350. It's your choice.
  • Daytime train. If you'd rather give up a day in either city and see the countryside between Rome and Paris, which is spectacular, you can take a daytime train. Unlike North America that has Amtrak and Via Rail, Europe has many, many train companies.  RailEurope  is one site that works with all the train companies serving Europe and coordinates between them.
  • Flights . There are many flights daily between Paris and Rome. The flight will cost you between €250 and €300 plus the cost to get to and from the airports in each city. The flights are about 2 hours long but, again, you have to consider the time to get to the airport and being there early for your flight. This can easily add 3 hours to the trip.
  • Bus . This appears to be not much cheaper than the options above, it takes longer and is likely less comfortable.

The Best of Rome: Accommodation, What to Do

What a city!

I went to Rome in 2002 when traveling with my family. I thought I'd done it. I'd seen the major sites, I had them in my mind. Done. Dusted. On to the next destination.

But, no. Rome solo is completely different. I fell in love with Rome. My breath was taken away at every turn. It is, indeed, the eternal city for it's layered in almost 3,000 years of history. This history is shown in its ancient Roman, Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, and even Fascist architecture.

Unlike Paris where there is a uniformity to the city thanks to Napoleon III and his urban planner Georges-Eugene Haussmann’s plan of the late 19th century, in Rome one style of architecture butts up against another in the most surprising ways. Rome's social, political, and military history is evident through its buildings, everywhere you look. It's spectacular. My reaction to this city was visceral.

Where to Stay in Rome

Where I stayed: StarsHotel Metropole  is a very central, full-service hotel with spacious rooms that are more like North America than Europe. From this location I walked everywhere and saw all the major sites of the city. If you don't love walking like I do, this central location means getting around by transit or taxis is cheaper. The restaurant serves both Roman cuisine and a range of international dishes, all prepared with products by Eataly. The breakfast buffet is great.

Other options:

  • Hotel Domus Praetoria   Reader recommended. “This hotel is owned and run by a family of 3 brothers. I have stayed there on 3 separate trips to Italy since 2010. I found the brothers extremely helpful each time I was there, assisting with a couple of small emergencies on the last two visits. Although this hotel is close to the main Termini station in Rome, it is quiet and safe. As a solo mature-aged female I never felt unsafe walking back to the hotel even at night. The reception is staffed 24 hours and you have to buzz to get in from the street. All of the rooms I have stayed in were clean and reasonably roomy, although the ones on the 2nd floor overlooking the street are my favorite. There is a market in the street outside most mornings, but I was never disturbed by noise.” Via Milazzo, 42 Rome  Book it here.
  • Colosseum Garden – Retrome   Reader recommended. “ A small boutique hotel located on a quiet street in a neighborhood only steps from the Coliseum but far enough from the crowds. There are also several places to eat nearby where you will find many locals dining at reasonable prices. Most major attractions in the city are within walking distance and, for things that are farther away, it is located only 2 blocks from a taxi stand and just a few blocks from the subway. Each room is decorated in retro vintage furnishings. They have all been renovated and updated with modern amenities. Staying here is almost like staying in your own Roman apartment apartment, which, by the way, they also have available for rent.” Via Marco Aurelio, 47, 00184, Rome. Book it here .

What to Do in Rome

  • First time in Rome? Start with an overview . A Hop-on, Hop-off tour  is great if you’re short on time or want to get an overview of the city before you dig into its specifics.
  • Colosseum on a small-group tour . Skip the line and take this tour that includes the amphitheater’s underground chambers, which are off-limits to most of the public each day.
  • Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica . Unless you have the day at your disposal to stand in line, it's absolutely necessary to buy a Skip the Line ticket for the Vatican.
  • The Trevi Fountain is open to the public at all times, however, it is incredibly busy most of the time. Get there in the very early morning to truly enjoy its beauty.
  • The Pantheon made my eyes well when I first saw it. Construction began on this magnificent structure in 27 BCE. “Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.” It is one of the best preserved buildings from ancient Rome thanks, largely, to the fact that it has been in continuous use.
  • Relax in the Piazza Navona. The square dates back to the end of the 15th century. Now there are places for coffee and gelato, street performers, and shops.
  • Take a food tour. I not only had a great time but I learned a lot finding real Roman food on the Trastevere for Foodies  tour by Eating Italy. You can read about the tour here:  A Fabulous Trastevere Food Tour .
  • Check out the street art . The Quadraro district of Rome has the  MURO Urban Art Museum of Rome , a free, open-air display of murals painted by local and international artists. Street art always has a political edge to it revealing more than the surface of the city ever shows.
  • Learn to cook the Italian way . Take a cooking course . This one is in a 17th-century palazzo overlooking the Piazza Navona where I also took a pizza course. This one is for pasta making and tiramisu.
  • Discover a recovering wine region . I don't know a lot about wine. In fact, I had never heard of Lazio and a little research told me why. The wines were considered ho hum but they are making a comeback. Learn all about it at this wine tasting .
  • If you have the time, consider a trip to Pompeii . Take two days if you can and pick up a tour to Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri . I stayed in Sorrento a few years back and can highly recommend a visit to this area.

Enjoy the Best of Paris: Accommodation, What to Do

I've always thought that Paris was called the City of Light due to how the streets, monuments, and towers are illuminated at night.

It turns out I was half right. It is attributed to the fact that it was one of the first European cities to adopt gas street lighting. Doing so was part of Haussmann's renovation of Paris between 1853 and 1870, which resulted in that uniformity of architecture that I mentioned above. It is also because of the city's leading role during the Age of Enlightenment.

Where to Stay in Paris

Where I stayed :  Hôtel L’Echiquier Opéra Paris  is a Sofitel property on a side street away from the crowds and noise but close to Paris' highlights. It's also just a couple of blocks from the bustling Montorgueil quarter where Parisians really live. It's a full service hotel built in the 1850's and decorated in a beautiful belle epoque style. It has a birdcage lift going up the center of a circular staircase. It's a real treat!  Book it here.

  • Hotel Amelie Reader recommended  “Located in the 7th arrondissement, a mere 10-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. Surrounded by tons of restaurants, cafes, bars, metro stations and stops. Also, it’s just a short walk to the Musee d’Orsay and the Louvre. They have a fantastic breakfast, buffet-style. Very small hotel but packed with modern amenities in each room, including flat-screen TV, modern bathroom, comfortable bed, and a mini-fridge with some drinks. And there’s a strong Wi-Fi signal in each room.” 5 Rue Amélie, Paris.  Book it here .
  • Hotel Esmeralda Reader recommended “This is a small, quirky hotel with a spectacular location – steps from Notre Dame and St. Julien le Pauvre, right on the Seine in the heart of the Left Bank, within walking distance of many of Paris’ historic treasures. Also within easy walking distance of several Metro stations. 4 Rue Saint Julien Le Pauvre, Paris. Book it here .

What to Do in Paris

  • First time in Paris? Start with an overview . A Hop-on, Hop-off tour is great if you’re short on time or want to get an overview of the city before you dig into its specifics.
  • The Louvre, even if you don't want to see the Mona Lisa. The building itself is a wonder.
  • The Arc de Triomphe. You can walk around it but on my first trip to Paris in 1985 I went to the top (it now costs €9.50 to do so) and I still have a vivid image of seeing Paris, the traffic around the Arc, and the view of the Champs-Elysées from the top.
  • The Eiffel Tower: One of the most recognizable structures in the world. It's worth viewing it, even from the ground, to put the tower in perspective. Whenever you're on high ground so that you have a view of the city, have a look for it. It's likely within sight.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral, of course. You'll see a number of highlights of the city in the photos below. Depending on what you want to do, you might want to purchase the  Paris City Pass .
  • Book a Greeter .  Paris Greeters are locals who love their city and want to share it with tourists. You're best to book your Paris Greeter online and in advance. This link will give you a sense of the experience:  Friendly Paris: Exploring the Real Paris with a Greeter
  • Take in a fashion show . Galeries Lafayette near the Paris Opera House offers free fashion shows each Friday at 3pm on the 4th floor by reservation only. Use their  booking page . For the best seats, come a little early and get a seat near the stage.
  • Enjoy a wine tasting . This wine tasting in the cellar of a wine bar in the Montorgueil quarter was good fun and educational. Try the Grand Tour of French Wine  experience.
  • Take a perfume workshop . Paris is famous for perfume. Take a perfume workshop  and learn what's behind the magic. Click here for a list of all the workshops and lessons you can take in Paris .
  • Eat at the home of a local.  I had a wonderful experience with  VoulezVous Diner . You'll get more than a meal. You'll get an evening in a local's home. Dinner and entertainment and local connections – well worth the price – which is quite reasonable. Read Guest in a Paris Salon .

Paris and Rome the Easy Way

On one trip to both cities I went with Monograms Travel  , a company that is part way between a travel agent and a tour company. They give you an independent experience but relieve you of the tedious aspects of travel.

I arrived in Rome first and was met at the airport by a woman with a sign. I've always envied those people who get picked up outside arrivals and this time I was one of them. She passed me off to a driver who took me to my hotel, pointing out major sights along the way.

At the hotel, I was met by Monograms' local host. She outlined what activities I had confirmed for the next few days and what she would recommend for my time that was not booked. That evening, there was a welcome reception for Monograms travelers. This is an opportunity for all to learn more about their plans while in the city and ask questions. For solo travelers, it's a chance to socialize a bit.

This is the essence of a Monograms trip, a lot of hand holding and, at the same time, a lot of freedom. I took this trip as a guest of Monograms to experience their un-tour concept.

Monograms and the Single Supplement

What about the single supplement? Let's deal with this directly because, as solo travelers, we are all concerned about it. They have a supplement and it's higher than our usual threshold of 20%. However, there are two things that make me comfortable with this. The level of service is exceptional and very personal so the value is well beyond just a room to yourself. There is also the pick-up and drop-off at the airport, the local host who is available to you at all times, even by phone in the evening, and the planning that is done for you without the need to follow a group around. The challenge of independent travel is always in the planning, scheduling, and the transitions and they have this sorted for you.

The Monograms Experience

The Monograms experience is luxurious by my standards. They help with the planning. You can avoid all that hunting on booking.com trying to find the right hotel, location, and price; they take care of it for you. By working with just a few hotels they can exercise buying power and get you more for less. Then there's also the challenge of choosing the right city tour, wine tasting, or cooking class. They take care of this as well by vetting excursions so you can just choose what you want to do, not what tour company you want to do it with. And then there are the transitions. Pick-ups and drop-offs make those easy. Bottom line: I was impressed.

France and Italy: Best 2 to 3 week itinerary for first-time visitors

France and Italy make for a perfect first visit to Europe, but there are so many potential places to visit that planning well is extremely important. Of the two, Italy is a bit more straightforward because it has a “Big 3” of tourist cities consisting of Rome, Florence, and Venice. France, on the other hand, has Paris, but beyond the capital it can be hard to know where you should go.

These two countries contain several of what I consider to be the best cities in Europe to visit for anyone , so it’s just a matter of narrowing down where to go and how much time to spend in each place. In the article below you’ll see the best option to string together a tour of these countries in two or three weeks. There will be options and decisions you’ll have to make based on your own tastes, but no matter how you do it this should be an unforgettable trip. We’ve also added even more options for those with more specific tastes. If you are a foodie and want to try the best food scene in Italy, you’ll find it in Bologna and there is more information below on that.

This article was most recently updated in June, 2024.

How many cities to visit?

paris and italy tours

There are  many reasons why fast travel might be your best option , but only up to a point. With only a few exceptions, 3 nights per city is a good minimum even for those wishing to see as much as possible, or 2 nights in the smaller cities.

If you are going to France and Italy for sure then start with Paris and Rome as the foundation and add cities in between to the degree you’ll have time. France is a deceptively large country so travel will eat up some time unless you are flying or taking the bullet trains.

>>> Going just to Italy? :  Here are the best first-time Italy itineraries for 3 days to two weeks

Flying in and out

Unless you are starting from elsewhere in Europe, you’ll want to carefully choose which airport to fly into. It used to be that Paris was one of the cheapest, and it’s still competitive, but it doesn’t rank high on the list of  European cities that are cheapest to fly into .

Two one-way tickets is ideal

It used to be that round-trip tickets were always much cheaper than two one-way tickets, but often that is no longer true. Sometimes the one-way flights are exactly half the round-trip fare, sometimes a bit more than half, and other times they are double. It’s hard to predict so it’s worth comparing them yourself.

The first thing to try is this:

  • (your city) to Paris one-way
  • Rome to (your city) one-way

Compare that to this:

  • (your city) to Paris round-trip
  • (your city) to Rome round-trip

If the two one-way flights are within US$150 or so of either round-trip, then they are your best option. If the round-trips are much cheaper then your best option is to buy one of those as well as a one-way flight between the cities (for around US$100) for just before you fly home. It would cost more on the train and also take 14 hours, so flying that last part is the way to go unless you are planning on using the last leg of a Eurail Pass on an overnight run.

Getting around once in Europe

paris and italy tours

Even on trains, you still have three main options:

  • Buying a France-Italy regional Eurail Pass
  • Buying individual train tickets in advance
  • Buying individual train tickets one at a time when you get there

If you are under 26 you can qualify for the 2nd Class Eurail Pass, which will be ideal for many people. If you are over 25 you have to buy a 1st Class Eurail Pass, and those are probably only best for those with a bit more money to spend.

Best cities in France and Italy for first-time visitors

Paris (minimum 3 nights but even that is rushing it).

paris and italy tours

It’s true that you can’t just see all of France by just visiting Paris on your first trip, but it’s still not a bad idea because this city is the center of almost everything and even the areas surrounding it are filled with great sights, amazing histories, and plenty of things to do. It’s almost impossible to get a bad meal in the city and most of the food is reasonably priced considering the quality. Be prepared for a small hotel room, even if you pay a lot, so it’s more about paying for the location rather than for a luxurious and large place to sleep.

The sights in Paris are almost all worthwhile, but don’t think you have to spend an entire day in the Louvre in order to enjoy it. In fact, I highly recommend taking the 3-hour double-decker sightseeing tour (run by several companies) on your first day in order to see at least the exteriors of all of the famous landmarks. If you want to go inside at least a few of the big attractions you might consider getting a Paris Pass , which also covers the bus tour and a cruise on the Seine.

Spend at least three nights in Paris itself and if you have extra days you might do a day trip (tour buses are a great choice) of the nearby Loire Valley. It’s filled with famous castles and palaces where the rich used to live outside of the city, and many are available for tours.

Paris to Nice by train: About 6 hours

>>> Check Paris hotel deals

Provence region (optional 2 or 3 nights)

paris and italy tours

The main city is Arles and that is probably the best base, although Avignon (where the Popes lived) is also very tourist friendly and could be a good choice. In fact, Avignon is the beginning of the famous Côtes du Rhone wine road, which connects a series of hill towns with amazing scenery and of course wine tasting. Something like this might be better for a second or third trip to France unless you’ve got weeks to spend here. Provence is also known for its cuisine, as it stands out even within a country where the food is amazing virtually everywhere you go.

Paris to Avignon by train: About 3.5 hours Avignon to Nice by train: About 3 hours

Nice, France (minimum 2 nights)

paris and italy tours

Nice has a famous beach (made of pebbles rather than sand), but it’s also an important cultural capital with great museums and a thriving food scene. You could easily spend 2 or 3 quick days in Nice alone, but you might also consider spending a few hours in Cannes and/or Monaco, which are both only about 30 minutes away by train in either direction. The cheaper hotels in Nice are near the train station anyway, so that’s something to consider if you want to visit all 3 places in one short trip.

Nice to Milan by train: About 5 hours Nice to Venice by train: About 7.5 hours

>>> Check Nice hotel deals

Milan (1 night or just skip it)

paris and italy tours

The down side, however, is that Milan is mostly a business/financial city that isn’t as charming as the rest on this list. It’s one of Europe’s fashion capitals as well, but the casual visitor wouldn’t notice. Worst of all, accommodation in Milan can be insanely expensive if there is a trade fair or event in town. If you are coming through in between fairs and events, hotels can actually be unusually cheap, so it’s worth checking rates if you are considering stopping. Generally speaking, I recommend skipping Milan at least on your first trip.

>>> Check Milan hotel deals

Milan to Venice by train: About 2.5 hours

Venice (1 night minimum, 2 nights maximum)

paris and italy tours

The trick is to stay at least one night, if not two,  on the main island itself . Perhaps surprisingly, Venice shuts down early, with most restaurants and bars closed by around 10pm. But in those evening hours as well as the morning hours on the following day, the place can feel magical and like a fairy tale destination. Venice is also quite compact so seeing the main highlights in 24 hours isn’t difficult. Depending on your budget, spend one or two nights on the main island and you’ll be quite satisfied by the time you leave. You’ll be sick of the crowds by then anyway.

Venice to Florence by train: About 2 hours

>>> Check Venice hotel deals

Florence (2 nights minimum, plus side trips)

paris and italy tours

Whether you are coming from Venice or from Rome, this is the point on your trip that you’ll be able to catch your breath a bit. It’s also the cheapest city on this list so lingering here will be more affordable in addition to relaxing. The cuisine here is, of course, world famous, and it can get even better and cheaper if you spend a day or two in one of the many scenic villages in this part of Italy.

From Florence to Rome it’s only around 90 minutes by train, so another easy and pleasant travel day.

Pisa (a few hours on a day trip at most)

paris and italy tours

Regardless of your starting point, you can go to the Pisa Centrale train station and walk about 25 minutes to the Leaning Tower area, or take a train to the Pisa San Rossore train station and 7 minutes to the Field of Miracles. There are also bus tours from Florence that take you all the way there, but those come with the slowness of large-group travel.

>>> Check Florence hotel deals

Cinque Terre (1 night, optional)

paris and italy tours

When you see a photo of these villages it’s hard not to be drawn in so if you are in that group you could add a day or two in this area either before or after Florence. Note that the scenic footpaths connecting the towns are partly closed down at times due to instability, so a quick tour by train or even by boat might be a better option.

Florence to Rome by train: About 90 minutes

Rome (minimum 3 nights)

paris and italy tours

All of that said, Rome is absolutely a must-visit, although you won’t be blamed for hustling through the city quickly and efficiently so you can spend more time in the relative serenity of anywhere else. The Eternal City is also quite expensive, especially by Italian standards, which is another reason to save only a few days there rather than a full week.

>>> Check Rome hotel deals

Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast (optional up to 4 nights)

The “big 3” in Italy are Rome, Florence, and Venice, and if you have time for only 3 cities those are the obvious ones to choose. But if you want to dig deeper into Italy and you have enough time, your next best choice will be to base yourself in Sorrento and use it to explore Naples, the ruins of Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and the island of Capri.

paris and italy tours

Interestingly enough, as of 2024, Naples is packed with tourists again and the hotels are quite busy as well. In previous versions of this article I would urge (as above) for visitors to just do Naples as a day trip, but with larger crowds and better safety, it’s time to consider staying in Naples itself for a night or two again.

Stay in Sorrento

paris and italy tours

Amalfi Coast and the Island of Capri

paris and italy tours

The other main nearby attraction is the famous tourist island of Capri, which is best known for its Blue Grotto attraction. The ferry from Sorrento only takes 20 minutes each way and leaves hourly most of the day. This is another easy and ideal day trip where you can have breakfast and dinner in Sorrento and a wonderful time in Capri in between.

>>> Check Sorrento hotel deals

Bologna is the best addition for foodies

paris and italy tours

Bologna is yet another beautiful city with a lot to see, but it’s not one of the top tourism cities so the vast majority of restaurants there rely mostly on repeat business from locals. You’ll get pretty good Italian food even in Rome, Venice, and Florence, but if you want to experience what is considered the best restaurant scene in Italy, you’ll find it in Bologna.

Bologna is only 37 minutes by train north of Florence, so you could even go for an afternoon or even just a dinner while staying in Florence, and the city is about 90 minutes south of Venice by train, so if you want to stay it’s best to stay for a day or two in between Venice and Florence.

Filling in the rest of your itinerary

If you have only two weeks total then the above minimums will also pretty much be your maximums, give or take a day. But if you have three weeks you will be adding days to these cities or adding new cities altogether. Honestly, if this is your first trip to these countries, you’ll really get the most bang for your buck by adding extra days in Paris or Florence or both.

Rushing around for two weeks can be exhilarating, but rushing around for three weeks can really start to get exhausting. It’s better to plan to go slower and if you are getting bored you can do a day or overnight trip to something nearby. But you won’t get bored, and if you do you are probably doing it wrong.

France and Italy: Best 2 to 3 week itinerary for first-time visitors " --> All Comments

Thanks for the great starting point!!

Hi Roger, I just stumbled on your site and it is amazing, so thank you! I would like to take my wife, 15 and 18 year old kids to Europe in June 2024 for the first time. Gotta see Paris, but what other countries/cities would you recommend seeing if we were planning a 14 day trip. Having never been across the Atlantic it’s a bit overwhelming to a first timer. I like planning trips so I’m not opposed to doing it myself if possible. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

I’m glad you have found this to be helpful. I think you are on the right track and with 14 days I’d start in Paris and then either stop in Nice or a wine region and then make my way to Italy for the second week. So again to simply, I’d start in Paris for 3 or 4 days and then probably choose something else in France for the next 3 or 4 days. Then get to Venice by train or plane and spend 1 or 2 days there (it’s small and you can see it in a day or so) and then take a train to Florence for 2 or 3 days and then a train to Rome for your final 3 days or so. Then you’ll probably have to fly back to Paris to board your flight home, but I’d check if you can get an open-jaw ticket that is home to Paris and then Rome to home. Usually those cost a lot more though.

The article above should give you lots of information and options on filling in the blanks. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Roger

It was such an amazing trip for us. Everything went very smooth. The indian food provided was very nice. They provided us a heartfelt lunch and dinner everyday. The coffee, tea, ice cream, and soft drinks provided here and there were so amazing. The tour manager Kiran Jadhav was also amazing. We were fortunate to have him as our tour manager. He managed to cover everything mentioned in the itinerary. This tour package covered all important wonders in Europe like the colloseum, leaning tower, vatican basilica, eiffel tower and much more. For us, those two days in Switzerland when we visited Mt titlis and Mt jungfrau were our favourites. Overall this trip left us with everlasting memories. Thank you veena world!!!

We Are Here is just one of the exciting new exhibitions in Paris.

Before Olympics mania descended upon the City of Light , spectators were more likely to immerse themselves in the worlds of Monet and Louix XIV than they were Ledecky and Biles. The good news this summer: Both are possible! The following exhibitions and activities will sate your inner aesthete and your inner historian.

Matisse, The Red Studio and Ellsworth Kelly, Shapes and Colors, 1949–2015

  • Where: Fondation Louis Vuitton
  • Dates: May 4–September 9, 2024
  • Hours: 11 a.m.–p.m. on Wednesday; 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on Thursday; 11 a.m.–9 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m.–8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; and 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on Monday
  • Admission: €16

In very meta fashion, part of this exhibition remarkably reunites the 10 pieces of artworks seen in Matisse’s infamous The Red Studio —and alongside the painting itself, on loan from MoMA—for the first time since leaving Matisse’s atelier in Issy-les-Moulineaux, a suburb just outside of Paris. The artworks, created between 1898 and 1911, include paintings, sculptures, and ceramics.

In celebration of American abstract artist and painter Ellsworth Kelly, about 100 of the artist’s often monochromatic works are also on display at Foundation Louis Vuitton, including a permanent, site-specific piece finished in 2014 in collaboration with the museum architect Frank Gehry.

History Tours at the American Library in Paris

  • Where: The American Library in Paris
  • Dates: Fridays through August 30, 2024
  • Hours: 11 a.m.
  • Admission: Free, but preregistration is required

Discover how Paris’s only American library was born, courtesy of a free tour in honor of the community’s 104th anniversary (hint: The founding involves World War I). Located on the Left Bank, not far from the Eiffel Tower, this newly renovated private library is full of incredible stories beyond those told in the pages on its shelves.

We Are Here explores street art within the historical halls of the Petit Palais.

We Are Here

  • Where: The Petit Palais
  • Dates: June 12–November 17, 2024
  • Hours: 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Tuesday–Sunday
  • Admission: Free

For the first time in its 124-year history, the smaller of the two stately monuments in the center of Paris opens its exhibition space to artists whose work is normally seen on the street. Artists include American Shepard Fairey, aka Obey—known for his famous “Hope” poster of Obama during the 2008 election, French mosaic fanatic Invader, and Seth, whose colorful, childlike figures grace various parts of the city, especially in the street art–strewn 13th arrondissement. More than 200 pieces from more than 60 international artists will grace these hallowed halls.

The Birth of Department Stores: Fashion, Design, Toys, Advertising, 1852–1925

  • Where: Musée des Arts et Décoratifs
  • Dates: April 10–October 13, 2024
  • Hours: 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Tuesday–Sunday
  • Admission: €15

Shoppers delight! In the first of a two-part exhibition, this display takes visitors beyond the racks and dressing rooms into the heart of Parisian glamour with a history lesson on its fashion temples, beginning with the establishment of Le Bon Marché on the Left Bank and then Printemps, La Samaritaine, and Galeries Lafayette on the Right. From posters to clothing, the 700+ curated pieces present the importance of this new style of commerce and explain how it gave rise to female-focused consumerism.

Fashion on the Move #2

  • Where: Palais Galliera
  • Dates: April 25, 2024–January 5, 2025
  • Hours: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Thursdays
  • Admission: €12

The city’s fashion museum has selected 300 items from its permanent collection that are tied to movement , piggybacking on the summer’s sports festivities. Clothing designed for such physical activities as horse riding, tennis, golf, and bicycling will be juxtaposed against garments that were worn about town. There’s also an entire section devoted to bathing suits, swimming costumes, beachwear, and related accessories. After all, the bikini debuted at Paris’s Piscine Molitor in 1946.

Surrealism: The Centenary Exhibition

  • Where: Centre Pompidou
  • Dates: September 4, 2024–January 13, 2025
  • Hours: 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday; 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Thursdays

The city’s most new-age-y museum will unveil a tribute to a new-age-y style: surrealism. In celebration of the movement’s 100th anniversary, the Pompidou will retrace the genre’s history through a labyrinthian exhibition that will boggle all senses. Beginning with André Breton’s Manifesto , which will be on loan from the National Library of France, Surrealism will showcase the poetic principles and imaginations of those who participated, including, of course, Dali, Magritte, and Miro, alongside others such as Tasuo Ikeda of Japan and Rufino Tamayo of Mexico.

Egyptian Pharaohs from Cheops to Ramesses II

  • Where: Atelier des Lumières
  • Dates: February 9, 2024–January 5, 2025
  • Hours: 10 a.m.–6 p.m., Monday–Thursday; 10 a.m.–10 p.m., Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Sunday
  • Admission: €17

When that canicule (heat wave) hits—and it will!—there’s no cooler place than the immersive, digitally forward Atelier des Lumières. The space blends music and laser lights in the 11th arrondissement, and, for its latest exhibition , the dark space presents projections of ancient Egypt, featuring giant sphinxes, pyramids, temples, and more. It’s a trip that allows visitors to journey back in time thanks to the wonders of technology.

Eva Jospin–Versailles exhibition

  • Where: Palace of Versailles, L’Orangerie
  • Dates: June 18–September 29, 2024
  • Hours: 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m., Tuesday–Sunday
  • Admission: €24 (covers the whole estate)

Contemporary exhibitions return to the Palace of Versailles with the display of exquisite embroidery over 1,000-feet-long by French artist Eva Jospin. Located in the Orangerie, the tableau depicts a natural landscape originally inspired by pieces found at Rome’s Palazzo Colonna and Virgina Woolf’s novel A Room of One’s Own . Produced by craftsmen and women in Mumbai, the piece was also presented during Dior’s Autumn–Winter 2021–2022 haute couture show under the creative direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri.

Jennifer lopez flies commercial to paris, becoming relatable amid marital woes, jennifer lopez flies commercial ... jenny from the cabin.

Jennifer Lopez is becoming super relatable amid her marital woes with Ben Affleck ... getting back to her Jenny From The Block roots with some commercial air travel.

Check out these photos/video, obtained by TMZ, showing J Lo's mode of transportation over in Europe ... and no, this ain't a private jet -- it's a regular old airplane full of a bunch of normies, on which she flew Saturday going from Naples to Paris.

The singer/actress was in the cabin with everyone else, and had a bodyguard sitting next to her ... taking up aisle duty while she occupied the window seat, minding her business.

As you can see ... she didn't seem to be getting bothered much -- still ... she was kinda packed in like a sardine ... and even before the flight, she was spotted in the terminal along with everyone else, going through the motions of customs, etc. Like we said, relatable.

Of course, J Lo popped up in Italy just last week for a solo trip without Ben ... getting some R&R with friends along the beautiful Positano coast, where she was beaming.

While J Lo wined and dined in Italy and flew to France for Paris Fashion Week, Ben's been in L.A. ... where he's spending time with his son and hitting the marital home . Of course, he ran into a little drama there with paps ... but the bigger point is, he and Jen are apart.

As you know ... Ben and Jen appear to be hurtling towards divorce, and are living separately as they quietly try to unload the $60 million Beverly Hills home they purchased together just last year.

We've seen Jen and Ben hang out together here and there over the past several weeks -- mostly for family events -- but on this occasion ... it looks like she needs some me-time.

A Euro flight up in the air is the perfect place for that ... just a superstar and her thoughts.

2. b. The final stage will be held outside Paris for the first time since 1905 because of a clash with the Olympics, moving instead to the French Riviera. Because of security and logistical reasons, the French capital won’t have its traditional Tour finish on the Champs-Elysees.

3. c. Only four riders have achieved this feat: Eddy Merckx, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain. Lance Armstrong won the race seven times in a row from 1999-2005 but was later stripped of his titles for doping.

11. a and c. Both Mark Cavendish and Eddy Merckx have won a record 34 Tour stages. Cavendish is trying to break the record this year.

12. c. The first rider to die during the race was Adolphe Heliere, who passed away during a rest day in 1910. Francisco Cepeda died after a crash in the downhill of the Col du Galibier in 1935. One of the most successful British riders, Tom Simpson, died of heart failure during the 13th stage in 1967 which was later determined to be from an overdose of drugs and alcohol. The last rider to die on the Tour was Fabio Casartelli, who died after crashing in the descent of the 1,069-meter (3,507-foot) Col de Portet d’Aspet during the 1995 edition of the race.

13. a. En route to his first Tour de France win, Vingegaard moved away from Pogacar in the brutal climb to the top of the Col du Granon to enjoy a winning finish to an epic day in the Alps. The stage featured two other monster ascents, the daunting Col du Telegraphe and Col du Galibier.

14. c. Pogacar has won 11 stages, Vingegaard just 3.

15. c. Pantani did the Giro-Tour double in 1998. Nibali made an attempt in 2016 after claiming the Giro but the 2014 Tour champion finished 30th that year. Armstrong rode the Giro only once, in 2009, and his 12th-place finish was later wiped out for doping. Pogacar is making an attempt this year after dominating the Giro in May.

16. a. 500,000 euros.

Cellphone Outage in Europe Leaves Many U.S. Travelers Disconnected

The disruption affected mostly visitors with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon service, cutting them off data networks across the continent for 24 hours or more.

Many travelers from the United States lost a crucial tool to check maps, make reservations, use ride-hailing apps and more because of a cellular data outage that began affecting users of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon on Wednesday.

The affected travelers, mostly in Europe, posted on social media, seeking answers about what caused the outage and how long it would last. Some reported being unable to make phone calls, send texts or use online services without Wi-Fi for as long as 24 hours. It is unclear what caused the outage, which appeared to extend from Britain to Turkey.

If you are in europe and your phone's data isnt working, verizon cannot help. according to their tech support, it is in the hands of Syniverse to fix so dont spend hours having verizon try to trouble shoot it. verizon read me a statement from syniverse but i see no mention online https://t.co/3FJsMQ531L — Chase ✈️ ᵀʷⁱᵗᶜʰᶜᵒⁿ ᴱᵁ (@ChasejustChase) June 27, 2024

An AT&T spokeswoman said that the carrier’s network was operating normally, but that some customers traveling internationally might be experiencing service disruptions because of an issue outside the AT&T network. The company said it was working with one of its roaming connectivity providers to resolve the issue.

Verizon told some of its customers on social media that it was also aware of the issue and that its teams were working with local providers to resolve it.

A T-Mobile representative said the carrier was one of “several providers impacted by a third-party vendor’s issue that is intermittently affecting some international roaming service” and was also working to resolve it.

George Lagos, a 70-year-old real estate developer from Dunedin, Fla., who is visiting the Greek island of Crete with his family, noticed on Wednesday that his T-Mobile cellular data was not working. For about 24 hours, he said, he was not able to reach the people he had made plans with, though luckily, they had already gone over the details together.

“You know it’s an inconvenience, but it wasn’t a disaster,” said Mr. Lagos, whose service appeared to be restored by Thursday evening. “I didn’t miss a flight. I didn’t have a taxicab looking for me or anything.”

But there was a more serious concern: His wife’s mother has been sick and Mr. Lagos’s wife could not reach the person who was helping take care of her.

“That probably was the worst thing,” Mr. Lagos said.

Major U.S. carriers all offer some version of an all-inclusive international data plan that allows travelers to use their phones much as they would in the United States.

Though the current disruption appears to be easing, travelers affected by such outages have other options to connect. Swapping out a physical SIM card — for phones that still have one — can allow you to connect to a local network. (These typically come in pay-as-you-go or prepaid packages.) For newer phones, apps like Airalo provide relatively inexpensive electronic SIM card packages in many international destinations. And of course, you can always seek out a secure Wi-Fi network.
