The dining on board World Voyager

The World Voyager is a ship in the Mystic Cruises’ fleet that sails under German management for Nicko Cruises , famous for their river cruises.

Their entrance into the maritime cruises market has seen the company turn towards high-level products, with expedition trips and in-depth discovery of the places visited. The small World Voyager is in fact a small expedition ship, designed to explore the most out-of-the-way destinations, from the Amazon to Antarctica.

World Voyager

World Voyager

The dining on board the Nicko Cruises ship is based on international cuisine, with a choice of dishes that ranges from Italian to Asian. Although the majority of the World Voyager’s clientele is German, there isn’t a notable regional prevalence, and all kinds of dishes can be tasted.

Onboard the World Voyager there is only one main restaurant, The Mystic Restaurant, which is both elegant and well lit, located at the aft doors on deck 4. Here you can be seated at any time you prefer, without assigned tables or seating times, in total freedom and comfort. The restaurant also has an outside area, with a nice ocean view off the stern, called the Al Fresco Terrace. The three main meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served here with different menus every day.

The dinner menu includes a selection of appetizers, a choice of two soups, a salad, a choice of main dish and desserts. But naturally, you can have any combination of these that you wish, with no limits. The wine menu has mostly Portuguese, Italian, French and California labels.

During the cruise there are sometimes themed menus or special initiatives. For example, an evening filled with delicious specialties completely inspired by Italian cuisine. Another fun occasion is the barbeque night around the pool where all kinds of grilled dishes are served with pleasant musical entertainment.

The current situation requiring preventative health measures means that there is a reduced number of guests on board the World Voyager and all the tables are correctly distanced, making some of the tables usable so that the correct social distancing can be attained. However, a printed menu is supplied that is printed out each day only in German.

World Voyager Lido Cafè

World Voyager Lido Cafè

The Lido Cafè is located by the pool on deck 7. Here you will find some alternatives, especially in the afternoons, when you can enjoy pizza, with different flavors every day, a daily soup and some desserts.  Dining happens in tables around the pool, with a wonderful view of the sea.

During the afternoon, tea or coffee is served in the Observation Lounge along with a side of sweets and savory snacks. The Juice Bar, open all day, provides a range of fruit juices, smoothies and shakes.

In the morning the station that serves drinks, tea and coffee (which is open 24 hours a day) also serves croissants and other snacks.

Another dining possibility for guests on board the World Voyager is to utilize Room Service, available from 7 am to 11 pm, with different menus depending on the time of day. In the morning there is a full breakfast available directly in the room, during lunchtime and after you can order dishes like grilled chicken, minestrone soup and excellent hamburgers. The service is free and very fast.

Russian warships headed to Caribbean for drills as tensions rise over Ukraine, US officials say

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. has been tracking Russian warships and aircraft that are expected to arrive in the Caribbean for a military exercise in the coming weeks, in a Russian show of force as tensions rise over Western military support for Ukraine, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The ships also are expected possibly to make port calls in Venezuela and Cuba, as Russia establishes a Western Hemisphere military presence that the senior Biden administration officials said was notable but not concerning. The exercise, which will be monitored by the U.S. military, will involve a “handful” of Russian ships and support vessels, the two officials said.

It’s not the first time Russia has sent its ships to the Caribbean. This exercise, however, is taking place as Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Moscow could take “asymmetrical steps” elsewhere in the world in response to President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-provided weapons to strike inside Russia to protect Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

The officials, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity to provide details that had not been announced publicly, said the exercise is “certainly” part of a broader Russian response to the U.S. support for Ukraine, but it also is an effort by Putin to show his navy is still capable of global power projection after losing several ships to Ukrainian strikes.

In this photo provided by U.S. Central Command, humanitarian aid arrives in Gaza, Saturday, June 8, 2024. (U.S. Central Command via AP)

Ukrainian military officials said in March that Russia had lost one-third of its Black Sea fleet to Ukrainian strikes during the past two years of war.

Russia did not notify the U.S. of the pending exercise, but the ships’ movements have been tracked by the U.S. Navy, the officials said.

Despite Russia not notifying the U.S. — which countries often do to avoid miscalculation — the officials said militaries all over the globe have the right to conduct exercises in international waters and do so regularly. For example, on Friday about 20 NATO countries including the U.S. will begin BALTOPS 24, a major naval and air exercise in the Baltic region near Russia.

The officials said they expect the Russian ships will remain in the region through the summer and will likely conduct similar, follow-up exercises in the Caribbean after this one concludes.

The officials said Congress was notified of the upcoming Russian exercises on Wednesday.

On vacation with Royal Caribbean, there are more ways than one for everyone to make memories together and on their own. From tasting the world’s many flavors to action-packed adventures on board—like zip lining and rock climbing —to relaxing on the beach or exploring top travel destinations in the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and more, there’s something for every age, vibe and occasion.

When it comes to the kids of the family, it’s Adventure Ocean Managers like Sara Bakin who make every day different with exciting experiences created just for them. Royal Caribbean’s complimentary and award-winning youth program features activities—like scavenger hunts and crafts— for kids 6 months to 12 years old . Have teens? They’ll love the teens-only lounges, where they can hang out and make new friends while enjoying the latest music, video games, movies and more.

It’s safe to say Sara’s explored the world in great company, and one of her next big adventures is the Ultimate World Cruise later this year on Serenade of the Seas— which will visit 65 countries on all seven continents in 274 nights.

Get to know Sara, what she does, her favorite destination for food , the best hidden spots on board and more in this exclusive Q&A.

Q: Let’s get started with your travel experience. How long have you been exploring the world with Royal Caribbean? And what do you do?  Sara : For more than 15 years. I manage the youth entertainment and social program for kids on board, and I like to call myself the Mary Poppins at sea !

Q: What do you love about what you do?  Sara : The kids ! I pursued a degree in early childhood studies because I always knew I wanted to work with children. I also have a real passion for travel and hospitality, so I get to experience the best of both worlds. After 15 years, I’m still loving it!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about living and working at sea?  Sara : I can’t name just one, so I’ll name three: travel , friendships and meeting new people. Not having to cook is also pretty great.

Q: What’s the most common question you get when people find out you work on cruise ships?  Sara : Most people ask me what are my favorite places to visit, which is hard to answer since I love so many different destinations! If I’m really pushed for an answer, I usually say Japan for the food , Australia for the beaches and Alaska for the wildlife .

Pro tip: One of the best parts about a cruise to Alaska is you can extend your vacation with a Cruisetour . It’s a package that includes multiple days of guided experiences before or after your cruise, from spotting humpback whales at Resurrection Bay to caribou at Denali National Park.

ocean voyager menu

Alaska is home to an estimated 50,000 black bears and 35,000 brown bears.

Q: What is the most memorable moment from your travels so far?  Sara : One evening while in Alaska on Radiance of the Seas , I was walking across the top deck when the skies came alive with the northern lights. Dreams do come true!

Q: What’s the one thing you could eat again and again on board?  Sara : The mushroom soup and filet mignon from Chops Grille and anything red velvet for dessert. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

Q: What would you recommend are the top things to do on board?  Sara : I love indoor skydiving. It took me a while to get the courage to have a go. Watching guests of all ages having so much fun inspired me to finally try it!

Pro tip: The RipCord by iFly simulator is where you’ll feel all the excitement of skydiving — while in the middle of the ocean. Only on Royal Caribbean, it’s an experience the whole family can enjoy.

ocean voyager menu

As Sara knows firsthand, you can cross off all kinds of experiences on your bucket list while on a cruise with Royal Caribbean.

Q: Do you have a favorite show on board?  Sara : I have always loved the ice skating shows on the ships. Recently though, I was also lucky enough to go on Oasis of the Seas and watch a show in the AquaTheater. In one word? Amazing.

Pro tip : The AquaTheater is a must-visit venue for entertainment on ships like Wonder and Icon of the Seas . You’ll be on the edge of your seat as you watch Olympic-level athletes perform daring stunts and acrobatics. From slackliners to high divers, these talented performers will take your breath away.

Q: Where would you say is the best view on board?   Sara : I could sit on the Windjammer’s outside deck for every meal. Sea air, beautiful views and great food—what more could you ask for?

Fun fact : Every Royal Caribbean ship has a Windjammer, and some even have an outdoor deck. You can enjoy Sara’s special viewpoint on ships like Radiance , Brilliance , Serenade ,   Jewel of the Seas and more .

Q: What’s your “secret spot” where you go to unwind?  Sara : The beach is my happy place. There’s nothing I love more than letting the waves hit my feet. Luckily, we visit some of the most beautiful beaches around the world .

Pro tip: To take things up a notch, look for the new adults-only beachfront getaway Hideaway Beach coming to Royal Caribbean’s private destination Perfect Day at CocoCay in January 2024. There’s everything from a swim-up bar to a live DJ and exclusive cabanas.

Q: What destinations are you most looking forward to visiting in the future?  Sara : I can’t wait to experience the beauty of the Americas and Asia while on the Ultimate World Cruise . I’m especially excited about South America . It feels like a dream to get to ring in the New Year in Brazil before visiting places like Argentina, Antarctica, Chile and Peru.

ocean voyager menu

The Americas leg of the Ultimate World Cruise visits Argentina’s famous Iguazu Falls aka the largest waterfall system in the world.

Credit: Royal Caribbean

Q: What’s one reason Royal Caribbean is a great way to vacation?  Sara : We have the best crew who go above and beyond for our guests. The crew does not just deliver the wow—we are the wow!

Q: And now for a quickfire round of “this or that” questions, starting with chill or thrill ?    Sara : Chill.

Q: Night on land or sea ?  Sara : Sea.

Q: Chocolate chip or Ranger cookie?  Sara : Ranger cookie.

Q: Coco Loco or The Lime & Coconut (from the Lime & Coconut bar)?   Sara : Coco Loco.

Q: Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas or Labadee in Haiti?   Sara : Labadee.

BOEM Finalizes Environmental Review of Potential Offshore Wind Lease Activities in the Central Atlantic

John Filostrat Phone (504) 284-8605

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) today announced the availability of its final Environmental Assessment (EA), which considers possible impacts from issuing leases for potential offshore wind development off the Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia coasts, including site assessment and site characterization activities such as geophysical, geological, and archaeological surveys. The EA concluded that there would be no significant impacts from lease issuance.

“BOEM is proud to continue to support the clean energy transition in a responsible manner in the Central Atlantic region,”  said BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein . “We will continue to work closely with Tribes, our other government partners, ocean users, and the public to ensure that any development in the region is done in a way that avoids, reduces, or mitigates potential impacts to ocean users and the marine environment.”

Since the start of the Biden-Harris administration, the Department of the Interior has approved the nation’s first eight commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects. BOEM has held four offshore wind lease auctions, including sales offshore New York, New Jersey, and the Carolinas; and the first-ever sales offshore the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. BOEM is exploring additional opportunities for offshore wind energy development in the U.S., including in the Gulf of Maine and elsewhere off the Central Atlantic coast. The Department also continues to take steps to evolve its approach to offshore wind to drive towards union-built projects and a domestic-based supply chain.

On Dec. 11, 2023, the Department of the Interior announced a proposed offshore wind lease sale for two Wind Energy Areas in the Central Atlantic: one offshore the states of Delaware and Maryland, and one offshore the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In January of this year, BOEM  published  its draft EA that assessed the potential impacts associated with site assessment and characterization activities associated with issuing wind energy leases in the Central Atlantic. The public comment period for the draft EA ended on Feb. 12, 2024.

BOEM plans to hold a sale in the Central Atlantic later this year. A final sale notice (FSN) will be published at least 30 days prior to the sale, detailing the time and date of the lease sale and qualified participants. For any proposed offshore wind projects, BOEM will develop an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to analyze the specific impacts of those projects before making decisions on whether to approve the proposed construction and operations plan. The EISs will be prepared in consultation with Tribes and appropriate government agencies, and informed by input from stakeholders, ocean users, and the public.

For more information regarding offshore wind activities in the Central Atlantic, see  BOEM's Central Atlantic Webpage .

The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) manages development of U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) energy, mineral, and geological resources in an environmentally and economically responsible way.

New UNESCO report: Rate of ocean warming doubled in 20 years, rate of sea level rise doubled in 30 years

press-release_generic_en

This UNESCO report shows that climate disruption is having an increasingly strong impact on the state of the ocean. Temperature, acidification, sea level: all the alarm bells are ringing. In addition to implementing the Paris Climate Agreement, we call on our Member States to invest in the restoration of marine forests and to better regulate marine protected areas which are important reservoirs of biodiversity.

UNESCO Director-General

The rate of ocean warming has doubled in 20 years

While atmospheric temperatures tend to fluctuate, the ocean is steadily and constantly heating up. The State of the Ocean Report indicates that the ocean is now warming at twice the rate it was twenty years ago, with 2023 seeing one of the highest increases since the 1950s. While the Paris Agreements pledged to keep global warming below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, ocean temperatures have already increased by an average of 1.45°C, with clear hotspots above 2°C in the Mediterranean, Tropical Atlantic Ocean and Southern Oceans.

One dramatic consequence of this warming is an increase in sea levels across the globe. The ocean absorbs 90% of the excess heat released into the atmosphere, and as water heats up it expands. Warming ocean temperatures now account for 40% of the global rise in sea levels, and the rate of rising has doubled over the past 30 years totalling 9cm.

Coastal species are suffocating from declining oxygen levels

Since the 1960s, the ocean has lost 2% of its oxygen due to warming temperatures and pollutants, including wastewater and agricultural run-off. Coastal areas are especially impacted, with species finding themselves on the frontline of a battle to breath: roughly 500 “dead zones” identified where almost no marine life remains due to a dwindling oxygen-content.

Rising acidity is also a major cause for concern: with 25-30% of fossil fuel emissions absorbed by the ocean, this overabundance of CO 2 is reshaping the very chemical composition of the ocean. Since pre-industrial times, ocean acidity has increased by 30%, and will reach 170% by 2100. UNESCO’s findings reveal that once again coastal species are the hardest hit: while the high seas are steadily becoming more acidic, coastal waters are seeing dramatic fluctuations from high- to low-acidity, which young generations of animals and plants too fragile to survive, causing mass die-offs.

Blue Carbon and MPAs: Beacons of hope

Marine forests including mangroves, seagrass plains, tidal marshes are able to absorb up to 5 times more carbon than forests on land. As well as being vital harbours for biodiversity, they represent one of the best ramparts against global warming. However, UNESCO reveals that nearly 60% of countries still do not include marine forest restoration and conservation in their Nationally Determined Contribution plans.

Marine Protected Areas [1] are known to protect biodiversity, harbouring 72% of the 1,500 endangered marine species on the IUCN Red List. UNESCO’s new data evidences that the higher the level of regulation in an MPA, the more it is effective at protecting local ecosystems.

UNESCO is leading the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, from 2021 to 2030. Since the start of the Decade, more than 500 projects have been launched in all regions of the world and more than a billion dollars has been mobilized to improve knowledge and protection of the ocean.

The Organization is supporting dozens of scientific cooperation programs in all regions of the world, combining data sharing, high-definition mapping of the seabed, prevention of natural disasters and the search for innovative solutions to protect ecosystems. Through its more than 230 marine biosphere reserves and more than 50 marine sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, UNESCO is also the guardian of unique ocean sites which are home to critical biodiversity.

[1] A marine protected area is a defined region designated and managed for the long-term conservation of marine resources, ecosystems services, or cultural heritage.

Average ocean salinity.

One of the most well known qualities of the ocean is that it is salty. The two most common elements in sea water, after oxygen and hydrogen, are sodium and chloride. Sodium and chloride combine to form what we know as table salt.

Sea water salinity is expressed as a ratio of salt (in grams) to liter of water, It is written parts per thousand (ppt). In sea water, there is typically close to 35 grams of dissolved salts in each liter (35ppt), but ranges between 33-37 grams per liter (33ppt - 37ppt).

But as in weather, where there are areas of high and low pressure, the ocean has areas of high and low salinity. Of the five ocean basins, the Atlantic Ocean is the saltiest. On average, there is a distinct decrease in salinity near the equator and at both poles, although for different reasons.

Near the equator, the tropics receive the most rain on a consistent basis. As a result, the fresh rain water falling into the ocean decreases the salinity of the surface water in that region. Rain decreases further from the equator, and with less rain and more sunshine, evaporation increases. Evaporation of water vapor from the ocean to the atmosphere leaves behind the salt, resulting in higher salinity. Toward the poles, fresh water from melting ice decreases the surface salinity once again.

The saltiest locations in the ocean are the regions where evaporation is highest or in large bodies of water where there is no outlet into the ocean. The saltiest ocean water is in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf region (around 40ppt) due to very high evaporation and little fresh water inflow.

Take it to the MAX!   "A Funny Bath" - The Dead Sea

Learning Lesson:   "A Funny Taste"

Floating sea ice is the result of a unique property of water. As the temperature decreases to 40°F (4°C), the molecules slow and contract, and the density increases, same as other substances. Below 40°F (4°C), however, the water molecules begin to bond to each other; as they do, they are held apart, and the water expands again, decreasing the density. At 32°F (0°C), all molecules are locked into a crystalline structure, resulting in a nine percent expansion in size. This expansion and corresponding decrease in density is the reason ice floats.

Take it to the MAX!   Titanic Bergs

The amount of salt in sea water determines the temperature at which sea water freezes because adding salt to water lowers the freezing temperature. Water with a salinity of 17ppt freezes at about 30°F (-1°C) and 35ppt water freezes at about 28.5°F (-2°C). However, sea ice itself contains very little salt, about a tenth of the amount of salt that sea water has. This is because ice will not incorporate salt into its crystal structure. Newly formed sea ice can trap pockets of salty water, called brine, making the ice salty at first. Eventually, though, the brine gets pushed out of the ice’s crystal structure. Therefore, older sea ice is actually drinkable.

Learning Lesson:   We all Scream for Ice Cream

The density of sea water, however, is influenced by both its temperature and salinity. Density increases as salinity increases and as temperature decreases. Because salt lowers the freezing point of water, sea water does not start forming the lattice structure that lowers its density until it is much colder than fresh water. Therefore, when sea ice does form and loses salt, the salt is concentrated in the water beneath it, and the salinity (and therefore the density) of the underlying water continues to increase well after an area is iced over.

Learning Lesson:   Salt 'n Lighter

The "Average Salinity" map (right) shows the lowest salinity being in the polar regions. However, this image depicts surface salinity only. Polar surface salinity is lower than in the tropical regions due to ice melting each summer. However, winter ice formation increases the salinity below the ocean surface, causing the water below the ice to sink. That sinking motion governs the flow of the ocean's deep-water currents.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt in Ocean's Eleven movie

Ocean’s Eleven, Ted Lasso and the challenging state of the television business were all topics addressed by Channing Dungey , chairman and CEO of Warner Bros Television Group, at the Banff World Media Festival on Monday.

In a Deadline-moderated panel at the Canadian event, Dungey teased that she has considered a remake of the classic heist film, which originally starred the Rat Pack including Frank Sinatra, and a more recent version starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts.

“But there are just so many titles that it’s really more about someone walking into the office with a perspective or a point of view, or this is why we should do this in this way. It’s not like there’s one title that I’m like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to dust it off.’ It’s more when I look at certain films and think, ‘Okay, this was an amazing two and a half hours. But if we had a longer period of time to explore those categories, or to tackle that story,’ that’s really where the fun begins,” she added.

She also hasn’t given up hope that the world will see more Ted Lasso , in some form. The Apple series ran for three seasons and there’s been much speculation over the past year as to whether Jason Sudeikis would be willing to do more.

Dungey said that Apple would like more Ted Lasso , whether it’s a fourth season or a spinoff set in the Ted Lasso universe.

“We’ve had conversations about all of the above. I think Jason Sudeikis is open to the idea, but I think he wants to have the right idea, which I appreciate it. We at Warner Bros appreciate, Apple appreciates, because it’s the sort of thing where you don’t want to go do more, just for the sake of more, you want to go do more, because you actually have something to say, you have a story that you want to tell. We’ll see what happens,” she added.

“These are the challenges that everyone’s facing, because the business is at a really critical period of evolution, a lot of things are changing, the way consumers find and consume media continues to be disrupted. The economics of the situation continue to be difficult. You have a lot of companies that are going through consolidation and a lot of change, which for us as a studio that sells everywhere, the buyers keep shifting and changing and morphing,” she said.
