Playability

The Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany meets 5 out of our 8 criteria items for beginner friendliness, which means that it's a good guitar to start with as a complete beginner. This takes into account the type of frets, scale length, nut width, bridge type, fretboard radius, and neck profile to determine the easiest combination for new players to get used to.

New Player Friendliness

  • Comfortable shape
  • Easy-to-use bridge
  • Short scale
  • Comfortable neck
  • Comfortable fretboard
  • Soft Strings
  • Locking tuners

Hand Size Comfortability

After taking into account the neck profile, scale size, fretboard radius, and nut width, we can conclude that the Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany's construction is balanced for most hand sizes .

Nevertheless, this comes down in the end to personal preference. Make sure you test this guitar—or another one with similar characteristics—before buying.

Scale Length

Scale length is the distance the strings will span between the bridge and the nut. It can tell you a lot about the overall playability and tone of the instrument. A longer scale length means longer distance between frets, brighter tone and more string tension—which means lower action, but more difficult bending of the strings.

Here's the Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany's 23.465" scale length compared to other common sizes:

Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany Scale Length Comparison

This is a short scale guitar, which is great for new players. It will allow you to press down the strings without hurting your fingers so much, and makes it easier to reach difficult chords. However, this also means that you won't be able to lower the action too much.

Also, short scales give less space for the harmonics to breath, so this ends up making the tone of the guitar sound more 'bassy' than a loger scale where there's more separation between harmonics, which gives the tone more chime.

Neck Profile

Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany Neck Profile

The neck profile tells you the thickness (neck depth) and shape in cross section. Every difference will completely change the feeling and comfortability of the neck. This is a highly subjective thing, but most players indeed prefer certain types of necks (like Cs and Ds) because they feel nice in most hands.

It has a V type neck . This is a vintage type of neck that is not so common nowadays. Some people like it because they can rest their hand easily while letting their thumb hang over the edge of the fretboard. It's thicker than most modern necks, so it's great for playing chords but not so much for shredding.

  • All Acoustic Guitars With V Neck Profile

Fretboard Radius

When it comes to fingerboard radius, personal preference will dictate which one is better for you. However, most people seem to agree that a more curved (lower) radius will make it easier to play chords while a less curved (higher) radius is better for soloing and bending.

The Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany has a 15" fingerboard radius .

Here's an image comparing this fretboard radius to other popular choices:

Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany Fretboard Radius Comparison with Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul

This makes it more similar to Gibson guitars (12'') than Fender (9.5''). It's slightly flatter than most modern Gibson fretboards though, which makes it more comfortable for single notes, bendings and vibratos, but less comfortable for chords. . If you like the playability of a Gibson, which can be described as ''balanced for chords and solos'', and don't care about having slightly less curve for more comfortable solos, you'll like this radius.

Compound radius fingerboards give the best of both worlds. Unfortunately, the Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany has the same radius across the board.

Playability compared to main competitors

harley benton gs travel e mahogany

The Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany has a nut width of 43mm (1.693'') . This is within the most common range of nut widths for a 6-string guitar. It offers a good balance of string separation at the nut. It's the size that most guitarists prefer as it gives them just enough space to play open chords without muting the strings, but without spreading the strings too wide and making bar chords difficult to perform.

  • All Acoustic Guitars With 1.693" (43mm) Nut Width

It comes with nickel silver frets, so they won't last as long as stainless steel frets . If you use your instrument a lot, you might need to replace the frets after a few years. But this is unlikely as most people change instruments before this happens.

Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany Fret Size Comparison

Finally, let's talk about fret size. Some people prefer tall frets because it's easier to press the strings and perform bends since there's less friction against the fretboard. On the other hand, some people like shorter frets because they like to touch the fretboard when playing, or because they got heavy hands and tend to press too much on the string and alter the of the note pitch accidently.

The Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany's frets are Medium size . With medium frets, you can feel the fretboard more than with jumbo frets, but it's still easier to press the strings cleanly than with small frets ; notes might change their pitch just slightly if you press hard on the fret. Also, if you need to do some fret leveling after years of playing, you'll have some room to sand them down without having to replace them.

Playability Score

The type of wood and even the shape of the body will have a lot of influence in the final tone of an acoustic guitar . Here's we'll talk about what kind of tone you can expect from its specs.

Mahogany wood pattern used for guitar building

Mahogany Top, Back and Sides : This is the type of wood found in many top-of-the-line guitars, so that's a positive point for the build quality. This red-looking wood Mahogany is found in Africa and Central America and has great sustain and a warm tone due to its high density. The downside about this type of wood is that it's relatively heavy.

Nato Neck : This wood is also known as Eastern Mahogany because it's very similar to Mahogany, although it is cheaper.

Blackwood Fretboard : It's even harder and denser than Ebony, and it looks similar to Mahogany but with a darker color. As a tonewood, it's also similar to Mahogany but still distinct with a lot of clarity and crisp sound.

This guitar comes with preamp pickups that will allow you to connect it directly to an amplifier and record with it, or use it live.

Sound Score

Build quality, country of origin.

Knowing where the instrument is produced is a good way to know how well it's built. Some manufacturing countries are known for having higher quality standards. For example, most expensive instruments are made in the US or Japan, but there are some exceptionally great countries—like South Korea—that are building a good reputation.

The Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany is made in China . So you can expect lower build quality when compared to others made in Korea, Japan or the United States. Guitars made in this country are meant for mass production, which translates into less attention to detail and quality control . This doesn't mean the product is made poorly at all. Chinese products have a bad reputation since long ago, but they've definitely improved a lot the last few years.

Still, remember that we're taking about Harley Benton here, which is a brand with good renown. They know how to use cheap labor in this country without sacrificing too much quality. So you shouldn't end up receiving a useless or ugly instrument.

  • All Acoustic Guitars Made In China

Blackwood: The advantage of fixed bridges is that they don't require any kind of set-up . This makes it extremely easy when changing strings because you don't need to adjust anything besides tuning the guitar. Also, the fact that the bridge is directly attached to the body will help to increase sustain. The disadvantage is the lack of versatility since you can't create the same vibrato effects as with tremolo bridges.

Nut Material

Another important thing to analyze is the nut material, as it's one of the most important aspects that can affect the sound and playability of your guitar. A well-cut nut will make sure it stays in tune and will make it more comfortable to play.

Some comments from people who come to the forum about this model:

I have been a singer songwriter for more than 35 years. I still enjoy writing songs but do not gig very much these days. I love travelling ( mainly up to the North East Coast in the UK, where I originate from, with my lovely, loyal wee companion, Wor Bob, the Border Terrier ) I have quite a few guitars and I am always reluctant to throw one in the back of the car when we are on our excursions, so I thought this Harley Benton GS-Travel-E Mahogany would solve that problem. A ridiculously low price for something which has such favourable reviews ( and with a nice wee gig bag too ) So I ordered one. It arrived today and I absolutely LOVE this wee guitar. WHAT A BARGAIN ! The guitar is very well made, from lovely materials ( I love the slightly arched back, which certainly helps the guitar to resonate ). The neck and fretboard are wonderful. The action was pretty much spot on and the tuners are excellent, zero problem there – they work very well and the guitar holds its tuning ( after some bending and stretching of the strings ) I love the look and overall feel of this guitar and it projects amazingly well for something of its diminutive stature, with a beautiful full tone. I have to keep reminding myself that this was just over a hundred quid !! I would not have been disappointed if I had paid twice that amount. It would still have been a real bargain. I heard a few people criticising the placement of the battery compartment but I actually think it is a great place to house it and I managed to pop the battery into its compartment very easily by simply loosening the strings to gain access via the sound-hole, there is no need to completely remove them. Some people said it could be a potential problem if the battery was to run out mid gig ? ? Well just make sure you install a brand new battery before you start your gig ! ( come on, it’s not rocket science and the batteries are cheap enough ) Pro’s : Ridiculously great value. Outstanding build quality for a tiny outlay. Aesthetically gorgeous looking guitar. Very full and beautifully round tone for such a small guitar. More than adequate tuners ( which, again, look fabulous in black ) Great sounding pickup. Perfect for carrying with you no matter where you may roam. Cons : Although I like the choice of bronze strings, the quality of the ones it came strung with were well below par – a bit worn looking ( hardly worth mentioning as I always restring guitars with my personal preference – and, in truth, they sound not too bad ) The fret ends were a wee bit on the sharp side but a few minutes with a gentle file and that will be easily solved … nothing else to say really other than, if you are looking for a lovely wee travel guitar to carry with you, BUY THIS ONE ! It’s such a bargain …. and it even comes with a very decent gig bag …. FOR A LITTLE MORE THAN A HUNDRED QUID !! Amazing !!

I normally play a Martin 000-15S and my son plays a Taylor GS Mini (of which this little Harley Benton is a replica). I know a good guitar when I play it. I was looking for a cheap little travel guitar to take on a boating holiday and saw all the rave reviews of this little baby and decided to take a punt. When the guitar arrived, the first things I noticed were that there was a slight buzz on the low E string and a dead spot on the B. No problem though – a 1/4 turn on the truss rod (key in the lovely travel bag!) gave a little more neck relief and buzz/dead spot gone like magic. Only imperfection I could find on the whole instrument was a crease mark on the very thin pick guard. Again – no problem. I just peeled off the pick guard which left absolutely no mark on the guitar. I think it looks way better without it. The action is now absolutely superb all the way up the neck and the intonation (checked with Snark tuner) is, remarkably, also spot on at every fret. With the original strings and a little relief adjustment the guitar plays great now. Sure it’s not a Martin or a Taylor but it is a remarkably good sounding little instrument in its own right and for the Euros 109 I paid, absolutely stunning value for money. It comes complete with a smashing little gig bag, truss rod key and even a cheap, but functional lead for hooking it up to an amplifier. I tried it with a MicroCube amp and the output from the fitted pickup is more than adequate. I will be fitting a Graphtec TUSQ XL saddle when I replace the strings with Martin Custom Lights as I think very slightly heavier gauge strings might just add a little more bottom end, and the saddle that is on the guitar is a very cheap plastic job that isn’t really doing anything to improve the tone. However, saying that I generally make these simple mods to any guitar I buy, irrespective of what I paid for it. To summarise then, if you are looking for a really great value travel guitar then look no further. This really is ‘a steal’.

Update: I have now had this little gem for around a week and I haven’t picked up my Martin in that time. This little guitar is stunningly good. I just can’t believe that an all laminate, small guitar can sound and play as well as this one does. String spacing I find a little to tight for my liking when finger picking, but for flat picking and strumming, the v shaped neck and excellent action are spot on. I’ve yet to replace the saddle and strings because every time I pick it up I start playing it! I may be one of the lucky ones to get an absolute gem, but somehow, given the other reviews, I think not. Absolutely the best value guitar I have ever bought in terms of bang for buck. Amazing! Update: Have just replaced strings with medium gauge Elixirs (13s). Had to lower action slightly at nut for low E and A strings to accommodate heavier gauge strings. Great success, much less unintended bending of treble strings when playing up the neck and much improved base response. Although slightly harder on the fingers, I think it’s well worth putting heavier gauge strings on this great little guitar. With the Elixir 13s this guitar is the DADGAD beast!

Customer reviews

"I have plenty of guitars and I can't resist this little beauty - it gets far more of my attention than the price would suggest. You know you want one." / Review by thomann.de
"Sound wise i was extremely surpised especially considering the size of the guitar!" - Nuno S / Review by thomann.de
"The sound is clear, loud and well balanced considering the body is so small and the mahogany top gives a great mellow roundness to the sound." - Danno 79 / Review by thomann.de

Harley benton frequently asked questions.

Want to find out more about Harley Benton? Here are the most frequently asked questions.

1. Where can I order Harley Benton products?

All of our products are exclusively sold at Thomann , Europe’s largest online retailer for musical instruments with over 20 years of experience. Thomann is located in Germany, Europe but ships worldwide. Every order at Thomann comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 3-year warranty.

2. How much is shipping for one or more instruments?

Shipping costs vary depending on your location. In many cases, Thomann offers flat rates. The flat rate applies to the whole order (up to a certain weight limit), no matter how many products you order. Please visit the international shipping info page to see rates. For example, as of December 2020, shipping to the US for up to two electric guitars is €60, while shipping costs for a guitar and a case are generally around €80. These are guideline prices only and may vary.

3. What are the delivery times to my location?

Delivery times vary, depending on your location as well as the size of the parcel. Please see the international shipping info page to find out the average delivery time to your location. For example, the average delivery time to the US is 6-9 working days.

4. I’m ordering from the UK, what has changed since January 1st 2021?

Now that the UK has left the single market and customs union with the EU, we’ve updated our procedures for orders placed from customers in the UK. Based on the feedback we have received so far, Government Charges will be collected by UPS and they consist of the 20% VAT plus a small amount for the paperwork involved (usually around 2.5%). There is also an additional amount to be paid to UPS for their service, which is a minimum of 11.50 GBP. As not every order has the same customs requirement, for further information we advise that you check the costs and procedures in advance with the courier locally. Please check the Information for non-EU countries .

5. When will my order be shipped?

If your desired products are in stock, most orders are processed the same day and shipped within 24 hours after you’ve placed it.

6. What happens after my order is shipped? Do I get tracking information?

When your product is shipped, you will receive a confirmation email including tracking information. If you have a Thomann account, all this information is available in your personal customer centre.

7. What happens if I receive a damaged instrument?

All our parcels are insured for loss and damage in transit. If you receive a damaged parcel, please fill out the “return product” form to get a free return label. Take it to the office of the package delivery company stated on the return label and Thomann will replace it as soon as possible.

8. How do refunds work if I’m not satisfied?

As with every order at Thomann you can take advantage of their 30-day money-back guarantee without any questions asked. If you’re not satisfied, simply fill out the “return product” form and a return service will be arranged for you.

9. Do I need to worry about CITES?

No. Since we don’t use wood that underlies the CITES regulations for any of our products, you don’t have to worry about contravening any regulations while importing a Harley Benton instrument into your country.

10. Why is Harley Benton so low priced? Is it a scam?

Of course not. You, as a customer, benefit from the fact that we sell exclusively through Thomann and therefore we don’t need to establish and maintain a huge and expensive distribution network. That brings us closer to our goal of crafting great instruments and bringing them to you at the best prices possible.

11. What is the difference between A- and B-stock products?

A “B-Stock” is a product which has been returned by a customer within their 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee or replaced under guarantee and can no longer be sold as “A-Stock”. These products are offered at a special, reduced price, are fully functional and come with a full 3 year warranty and 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee. Customers may find that these products show traces of use or scuffing and may not come in their original packaging but will always be checked prior to shipment.

12. Do you have any shops where I can buy Harley Benton products?

Yes, there is a big variety of Harley Benton products at the Thomann shop in Treppendorf, Germany. You can also use Thomann’s live video chat to talk to an expert and get personal advice, almost as you would when visiting the shop in person.

13. I’m an influencer and I would like to use Harley Benton products in my videos/stories/posts. Who should I contact?

Our community manager will handle your request. Please use our contact form to let us know your personal information and your ideas on how you would like to present Harley Benton products.

14. I would like to suggest a new Harley Benton model. Where can I write feedback to?

The opinion of our community is important to us. We are always active on our social media platforms and if you leave constructive feedback, we will take care of it. In addition, you can also use our contact form to drop us a note.
