Islamabad is a foodies paradise and these are some of the best restaurants in Islamabad to get your food fix when there.

They cover the neighbourhoods of F11 through to F6 and the Blue Area, which are the most popular spots, as well as a few others.

It’s not just Pakistani food related either as we tried many different types of food.

Naturally, this will not cover every restaurant in Islamabad!

This is just a selection of some of our favourite places and the ones we recommend for you.

Best Restaurants in Islamabad

Kabul restaurant.

The Kabul Restaurant is the first place Sidra (my wife who is from Islamabad) took me to on my first visit to the city and I can see why.

The food is awesome!

It’s an Afghan restaurant as with Afghanistan being a neighbouring country there is a lot of that food option available.

Very hungry and ready to eat at Kabul Restaurant.

A combination of meatballs, kebab and rice, naan bread and assorted chutneys.

The waiter brings kebabs and naan bread.

Kabul Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Islamabad.

Burger Fest

Looking for the best burger in Islamabad?

Look no further than Burger Fest.

It’s a very tasty burger and also stays open late so you can get your midnight munchies in.

Right next to Burger Fest is a small kulfi ice cream place which makes the perfect dessert for after the burger.

Eating kulfi ice cream. I believe it was so good I started spacing out on the flavour, hence the expression!

Quetta Tea N Teas 

Quetta Tea N Tea is in the F10 area which is the perfect place to hang out either for a breakfast chai (tea) or an evening meal and enjoy the night vibe of a busy neighbourhood.

Although Quetta does their own naan there is a small AfghanI naan place just a minute walk away that has the best naan we had in the city so get takeaway from there and bring with you.

They didn’t mind us doing this.

F10 Market Area

Ok, this isn’t a specific restaurant recommended but the whole F10 market area as there are so many good places all near each other to try.

It’s our favourite area in Islamabad for food in general.

There are awesome Afghan restaurants mixed in with local Pakistani.

The sajji chicken is the best I had.

You can grab a very cheap and tasty street stall biryani for lunch in the area although you may end up sharing a little bit with a cat!

Just head to the F10 area near the entrance to F9 park and there you will find the food nightlife on 2 different sides to the Main Street that runs down the area.

Butt Karahi Islamabad Tikka F-8 Markaz

Butt karahi in Islamabad is basically a chicken masala and can be found all over in Pakistan however in the F8 market area there are numerous street-side restaurants serving up literally the freshest butt karahi you could have.

Fresh because you can actually choose your own live chicken that you want to eat.

There are cages in the street with chickens and you choose which one you want and they will kill it right there, de feather it, cut the meat up into pieces and fry it in masala sauces before serving it to you.

You can watch the whole thing if you like and if it sounds ‘gruesome’ to you just remember where that packaged chicken you get in supermarkets come from.

At least here you can see the chicken killed quickly and humanely.

Of course, if you don’t want to see all that you can just get pre-killed chicken.

Cooking the butt karahi.

It’s seriously delicious and some of the best chicken you can get in Pakistan.

Second Cup & Burning Brownie Cafes

If you’re looking for a good coffee shop in Islamabad then Second Cup and Burning Brownie are 2 of the best places to go.

There are a few Second Cups, the best ones being in Safa Gold Mall and Centaurus Mall, whereas Burning Brownie has 2 locations, one in F11 and one in F6.

If you work online or want to catch up with online stuff in general they make perfect places to do that with a relaxed cafe environment.

The Second Cup had the best of the coffees.

Butlers Chocolate and Coffee Cafe

If you want one of the best coffees in Islamabad then Butlers Chocolate Cafe in F6 is the place to go.

Located just several minutes walk from Kohsar Market it has a small outside seating area and serves up different coffee brews of which you will get some very good chocolate along with it.

This is the place to go to in Islamabad for chocolate and coffee.

Islamabad is well known for its many good bakeries and I tried pretty much most of them and the overall favourite, and what seems to be the best sweet food place in Islamabad overall, is Tehzeeb.

There are a few Tehzeeb bakeries in Islamabad (same company) so Google Maps search ‘Tehzeeb Islamabad’ and you will see them come up.

Ox and Grill Steakhouse

Need a steak fix?

Our local friend took us to the Ox and Grill and it’s one of the best steaks I had had in a long time.

Ok, if you’re short on time in Islamabad I would give it a miss and stick to f10 market etc to get a more local vibe and awesome food, but if you have longer there and craving a steak then this makes a very good choice.

Monal Restaurant 

Monal is one of the most famous restaurants in Islamabad, if not the most famous.

This is down mostly to its location in the surrounding hills of Islamabad giving epic views across the city.

We actually didn’t eat there as we had other plans but stopped in for the view.

But as it is so popular we are recommending it to go to enjoy dinner with the best view of Islamabad.

Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan. The most visited tourist places in Islamabad are Faisal Mosque, Pakistan Monument, Badshahi Mosque, National Art Gallery, Minar-e-Pakistan Rawal Lake, and Lahore Fort. The city is known for its high standards of living, safety, and greenery.

Hallem is one of the most loved dishes in Pakistan. This is a combination of meat, lentils, wheat and barley cooked with spices till the meat pieces get blended into the gravy, making it thick. After that ghee, saffron, green chillis, ginger and coriander leaves are added while serving.

In Pakistan, without chicken biryani there is no celebration. It’s found in the menus of every official dinner, wedding or whatever; biryani fits in all events. This is a combination of well-cooked chicken mixed with basmati rice, further garnished with dry fruits like almond and cashew. Sometime people use Zafran in their rice to give it a golden colour.  

3. Beetroot Juice

Beetroot juice, with its numerous health benefits, is one of the most common drinks one can taste on Islamabad’s streets. The roadside vendors sell fresh beetroot juice with ice, salt and lemon which further enhance its flavor.

4. Mutton White Korma

Mutton with a creamy white curry is a unique dish suitable for those who prefer fewer spices in their food. Prepared in a traditional style with mutton pieces cooked with onions, garlic, salt and black pepper, it is mild and flavourful.

Pinni is a traditional round sweet made by whole wheat flour, ghee, mawa, jaggery and dry fruits like almonds, cashew. All sweet shops, small or large, make pinni.

6. Cream Fruit Chaat

Fruit chaat is a refreshing snack perfect for summertime. It’s quick and simple to make. This sweet and creamy chaat is one of the most preferred foods during the month of fasting. Different fruits like apples, oranges, strawberries, bananas, mangoes, peaches, etc. are mixed with fresh cream, sugar, and sometimes black pepper and salt. You can easily find roadside vendors selling these all over Pakistan.

7. Chola Bhatura

Chola Bhatura is one of the most popular dishes and is extremely delicious. It’s very famous among Punjabi families and is one of the most common street foods in Islamabad. The curry is a perfect blend of spices with chickpeas and is eaten with bhatura which is made with all-purpose flour, wheat flour, yogurt, and salt. You can enjoy this mouth-watering dish with a glass of chilled lassi.

8. Chicken Tawa

You can find this easily on the roadside dhabas of Islamabad where already grilled breast chicken is marinated in spicy gravy, green chilies, and lemons. It has a citrus, species, delicious buttery aroma. This comes in three different types the boneless, breast piece, and leg piece served well with naan or roti.

9. Keema naan and Roghni naan

Keema naan is a delicious crispy naan stuffed with spicy chicken or keema. It’s heavy and garnished in ghee making a meal itself served with raita, pickles, or curry. Roghni naan has a honeycomb texture, made from all-purpose flour, egg, milk yogurt, and a few spices. This Mughal naan is garnished with ghee which enhances the taste.

10. Gazar ka Halwa

This is a delicious sweet delight prepared by simmering gazar (carrots) in milk, ghee and sugar, nuts are used for garnishing. It is mostly prepared during winter and special occasions like marriages, birthday parties, office parties, etc. Mostly served after dinner or lunch. 

11. Mutton Bhaja Nihari

Nihari is mostly made with mutton cooked slowly with spices for almost 4 hours, nihari is considered to be the National dish of Pakistan. Nihari is a traditional Muslim dish said to be originated from the Mughal kitchen. Nihari is a blend of rich spices like cardamom, cinnamon, chilies, nutmeg mixed well with yogurt. This dish is always made on special occasions and festivals.

12. Mali Boti

Pakistani cuisine is incomplete without Mali boti. This delicious dish literary means a creamy chicken piece. This is made using boneless chicken pieces marinated in cream, ginger garlic paste, chilies, and other spices, and then BBQ. It has a spicy tang and BBQ adds a smokey flavor to it. it is served with green chutney, onions, lemons, and some spices used to garnish.

Islamabad is sometimes referred to as a “boring city.”

I take issue with that statement. 

Wherever you are in the world, there’s always something to be found. Whether you’re in the middle of Siberia or the streets of Pakistan, makes no difference. You can have fun…if you know where to look.

Having visited almost a dozen times by now I can confidently say, YES, there are many things to do in Islamabad. This city and what it offers may not look and feel like other South Asian cities, but that doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause.

Over the course of this article, I will show you everything that Islamabad has to offer, from the best places to visit to the best restaurants to eat at. It is my goal to show you that staying in Islamabad isn’t a death sentence. You can stay here and have a good time and you don’t have to treat it as an extended layover.

Things to Do Around Islamabad

Islamabad is a planned city and a relatively new one at that – it’s only been inhabited (as the city of Islamabad) for about 50 years. This means that Islamabad follows has very modern city planning. 

Islamabad is laid out like a grid. Neighborhoods are almost perfectly square in shape and all built around a central business area. As such, Islamabad is extremely navigable, although it can take some time to get across town if traffic is bad. 

When you do want to get around Islamabad, I recommend using Uber or Careem.

Admittedly, Islamabad can feel a bit dull at times. It certainly lacks the frenetic energy and controlled chaos of other older cities like Lahore or Peshawar and can seem like it lacks energy or soul or something like that.

That being said, there are still PLENTY of fun and interesting things to do around Islamabad. You’ll just need to look in different places and have slightly different expectations.

Visit Faisal Mosque for evening prayer

Often considered one of the best places to visit in Pakistan, Faisal is one of the largest and most modern mosques in the world. It can accommodate a RIDICULOUS 300,000 people at once so, needless to say, it can get a bit crowded here. 

I’ll spare you the long-winded explanation behind its inspiration (yes, it is shaped like a Bedouin tent because a Saudi king funded the project, and, no, the towers aren’t meant to be rockets); I’ll simply say that the Faisal Mosque is quite impressive architecturally. It’s a harmonious blend of the old and the new and, at one time, was very forward-thinking in terms of design.

The best time to visit the Faisal is in the evening when the temps are cooler and the light is better for photography. There will be two calls to prayer around this time: one at sunset and another when it is fully dark. If this is your first time experiencing the call, be prepared to be emotionally (and maybe spiritually) moved. 

Since this is a place of worship, please remember to be respectful and wear modest clothing – no bare knees or shoulders, and women need headscarves. Note that non-Muslims are not allowed to take part in the prayer ceremonies while underway.

Going hiking in the Margalla Hills

Contrary to popular belief, Islamabad is not located in a desert nor is it a sprawling urban mess. In fact, it’s not even remotely arid. Neither is it totally concrete jungle 

Islamabad is actually a tropical city, which means that it’s quite green. It’s also located very close to some beautiful terrain. The lush Margalla Hills (also spelled Margallah), located literally on the edge of the city, are a great place to escape the city and hit the trail. 

The hills aren’t so tall, at least by Pakistani standards. They are still steep, enough to get a real workout in, and it can even get downright chilly up there. Snow, although extremely rare, is not unheard of. Most of the maintained trails are given simple numerical designations. 3 and 5 are reportedly the most popular. If you decide to do Trail 1, then you will end up at Monal Restaurant. Trail 2 will take you to the famous Daman-e-Koh Viewpoint.

Admire (and be admired at) the Pakistan Monument

For photographers and just general appreciators of architecture, the Pakistan Monument is probably the best thing to see in Islamabad. 

The monument itself is gorgeous, with beautiful etchings and curving shapes that really draw the eye. At dusk, it is especially beautiful as the sky turns a deep blue and the monument lights up to become a radiant orange. 

A little backstory: the Pakistan Monument was designed to emulate the Mughals, who had a profound effect on the region in their time. Each “petal” represents a major culture of Pakistan: the four larger ones are for the Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi, and Pashtun people, while the smaller petals are for the minorities of Azad Kashmir and the peoples of Gilgit-Baltistan. 

One thing to keep in mind is that the Pakistan Monument is a very popular place to visit in Islamabad for Pakistani tourists, which can only mean one thing for foreigners visiting: selfies . If you look anything like a Westerner, then be prepared to be SWARMED by Pakistanis wanting a photo.

As someone who lives rent-free on half of Pakistan’s social media profiles by now, all I’ll say is that the selfies get a bit old. Sure the first dozen or so are fun as you feel a bit like a celebrity. But after a while, and a few pushy photographers, you get sick of it. 

When you’re ready, quietly exit the monument and say “no thank you” to any more photos.

There is a bunch of cultural stuff to do in the area around the monument – and most of it can be done on foot.

Get a History Lesson at Lok Virsa Heritage Museum

Located right next to the Pakistan Monument is the Lok Virsa Heritage Museum, dedicated to the many peoples and cultures of Pakistan. It is primarily an ethnographic museum with exhibitions covering everything from ancient artifacts to remnants of the British colonization. 

For anyone interested in Pakistani history, spending an hour or two wandering the halls is a great thing to do while in Islamabad. 

While you’re there, ask the front desk if there are any Sufi performances planned at the museum. These happen from time to time and are very fascinating to watch. 

Entrance is 500 rupees for all foreigners (around 3 USD).

If you’re looking for a more traditional art gallery, rather than an ethnographic museum, you’ll want to visit the PNCA (Pakistan National Council of Arts) instead. It’s located in Islamabad proper in F-5.

Eat at Kabul Restaurant

Some of the best food in Islamabad comes from Pathan restaurants. Glistening grilled meats, hearty bread, rich pulao , and zesty side dishes define this style of cooking. Everything is delicious.

The best Pathan restaurant in Islamabad – or the most well-known at least – is Kabul Restaurant in F-7. From the outside, the place looks pretty assuming: it’s just a couple of plastic high-tops, a weathered Coca-Cola banner, and a big ol’ grill. Standard Pakistani fair right? 

But Kabul Restaurant is oh so much more. The kebabs are perfectly cooked and piled (very) high. The bread is always warm. And there is also a surprising amount of vegetarian options – I personally love the eggplant dish, which reminds me a bit of baba ganush . 

Note that there are TWO Kabul Restaurants located quite close to each other: the first, which is tucked away into a lot, is an imposter. Don’t go here. The real Kabul is located on the main drive (College Road) and is usually packed with people. 

If you want to grab a table, make sure you arrive before 8 pm. The place fills up quickly after that.

Drink in the Views at Monal 

If Kabul Restaurant is the local joint that every local knows about, then Monal is where all the big spenders go. This restaurant, located high up in the Margalla Hills, is the cushiest place in all of Islamabad (that or the Serena Hotel) and every night is like a gala. It seems that ambassadors, industrialists, politicians, and other well-off folks all come here to rub shoulders. 

That is not to say it’s entirely exclusive. In fact, a simple phone call is usually all you need to secure a reservation. I’ve managed to get in every single time I wanted to eat there, and I’m usually with a large group of guests as well. 

Unlike some other up-scale restaurants in Pakistan, Monal is well worth the extra expenses as well. The food, especially the kebabs , is fantastic here. Even the western food, which is usually pizza, steaks, and hamburgers, is good! The service is also exceptional. 

I’ll wrap up this particular thing to do in Islamabad with one last gush: the views from Monal are hard to beat. You see nearly the entire city from the restaurant. At night, the glittering city lights are a real treat, especially after you’ve spent weeks traveling in the wild north.

Treat yourself on your a bit and have a last meal at Monal before leaving Islamabad. You won’t be disappointed.

Celebrate Pakistan Independence Day

Independence Day is BIG in Pakistan. For one week in August, people go all out during this time: decorating everything in green and white, lighting fireworks, and playing games (polo if you’re in the north). 

But no other city does Independence Day better than Islamabad.

Being the capital of the country means you gotta show off your nationalism more than anyone else. Having spent Independence Day in Islamabad myself, I gotta say: these guys really put on a show. 

Horns blowing. Massive flags paraded in the city. Trucks full of people celebrating.Constant fireworks. It feels like Pakistan wins the world cup every time it’s Independence Day here. At times, it almost feels like America’s own Fourth of July except without booze. Which begs my next question”¦

How in the hell can these guys party so much whilst DEAD sober? 

Regardless, Independence Day is a great time. If you’re planning on being there around 14th, you should absolutely join in. Hands-down, it’s one of the best things I’ve done while in Islamabad.

Sample food at Kohsar Market

Can’t decide on what you want to eat in Islamabad? Why not go somewhere you can get try everything and anything? 

The Kohsar Market is probably the closest thing you will get to a food hall in Pakistan. It’s not a food pod or a farmers market by any means and there isn’t a lot of local choices (it’s mostly Western foods). But if you want a good selection of cuisine and something different than karahi or handi , this is a great place in Islamabad to visit.

Here are some options for you to choose from:

• Tuscan Courtyard – “ Italian” food. Don’t expect authentic Italian cooking. Do expect a lot of carb-laden, heavy dishes though.
• Porterhouse – A steakhouse. Simple as that. Reliable since Pakistanis do grilled meats very well.
• Street 1 Cafe – A good selection of food you would normally find in a western cafe e.g. bagels, salads, pastries, etc.
• Street Burger – Your standard hamburgers and fast-food fare. Good but nothing over the top (except those weird black buns”¦)
• Nom Nom Wok – Large selection of East Asian foods, including Thai. Chinese is usually a good choice as it’s a favorite for Pakistanis.

Visit the Best Book Shops in Pakistan

Almost every time I am in Islamabad, I rock up to Saeed Book Bank in F7. They have the best selection of imported English-language books I have found after checking out others all over the country. What sets Saeed Book Bank apart is that they have recent titles, political books, western non-fiction, and a huge variety of works by Pakistani authors.

There is something for everyone in this book store. Prices are not so different from what you might find in your home country, so don’t come in here expecting to get a new book for 50 cents.

Another favorite of mine is the National Book Foundation book shop. If you want things specific to Pakistani history and culture – this place is where you will find it all.

Find a Qawwali Show

Qawwali is a musical performance with roots based in Sufi mysticism. The band is usually composed of a primary singer backed up by a group of musicians who provide additional vocals and driving rhythms. 

Qawwali shows are a helluva good time. Everyone, including the frontman and the musicians, gets really into the show and really puts themselves out there. Chanting, sweating, racing hands, the whole show is just a frenzy. The frontman, in particular, is usually a great showman as he sings about love, spiritualism, and Allah almost totally improvisational.

Unfortunately, qawwali is not so common in Islamabad – it’s more of a thing in the Punjab and Lahore. But that’s not to say it never happens in the capital city, as every once in a while, a show pops up. 

Be sure to ask around about upcoming shows and keep an eye on the local dargah (sufi shrines). If you see someone with dreadlocks and a set of drums, you’re on to something. 

Go Shopping at Centaurus Mall 

Listen: I’m not a shopper. Never have been and never will. I would never recommend going to a mall to anyone EVER…unless it was a fascinating cultural experience. 

Centaurus Mall is luxurious, not to mention enormous. Composed of three glittering towers, it looks like something straight out of Singapore or Tokyo. Inside, it’s just floor after floor of shops and kiosks, swarming with people. 

The only reason I suggest Centarus as something to do in Islamabad is that it is an interesting juxtaposition with typical Pakistani life. Most Pakistanis shop at conventional, outdoor bazaars, which are obviously much less opulent. To see people wandering around a mall – a mall that could put most in America to shame – is an interesting change of pace and a sign of what might come in the future for Pakistan. Visit here and reflect upon this. 

Also, you can literally find everything at Centaurus. It is particularly useful for finding clothing, electronics, or real brand name items. If you’re interested in purchasing your own shalwar kameez or a dress, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better quality and a greater selection than here.

Things to Do Outside of Islamabad

The best things to do around Islamabad may actually be found just outside the city. Hidden caves, cool grottos, and plenty of archeological sites make the surrounding area rife for adventure.  

Depending on where you’re going, the furthest you will have to drive outside the city is 2-2.5 hours. Destinations like Rhotas Fort and Katas Raj are flow-blown day trips from Islamabad so prepare appropriately. 

Here are the best things to do near Islamabad:

Get lost in the Raja Bazaar of Rawalpindi

Located quite literally next to Islamabad, Rawalpindi is the much older, grizzled sibling town. Gone are the manicured hedges and wide boulevards of the planned city; back are the twisting alleyways and manic energy that you’d expect from South Asia. 

The centerpiece for the city is the massive Raja Bazaar. This is one of the finest examples of a bazaar anywhere in the country and features a staggering amount of shops. I’ll admit that when I said that you could everything at Centaraus, I was lying a bit; you’ll find even more in Raja. 

So get lost in the alleyways and see what you can find!

Remember though, you’re back in bartering country. Prices are never fixed and you should always try to get a better deal. 

If Islamabad really isn’t your cup of chai , then plan on spending more time in Pindi. It may just be exactly what you need.

Explore the Ruins of Taxila

Few people realize that a long time ago Pakistan used to be a hugely important region for Buddhism. Pilgrims carried the religion through Pakistan on their way to Central Asia and further east from the subcontinent. During the Gandhara period, Buddhism was at its peak as were the arts (thanks in part to Greek influence). 

Taxila is the former capital of the Gandhara Kingdom and is one of the most significant archeological sites in all of Pakistan. The open-air museum is covered with old stupas and remnants from the ancient city, whilst the museum houses an incredible finest collection of Gandhara art. History buffs should be chomping at the bit to visit here. 

Taxila is only 45 minutes away by taxi. With Kareem, it’ll cost $5 tops to get there. That makes for an excellent half-day trip from Islamabad.

Make the Day Trip out to Rohtas Fort

Rohtas Fort is an old fortress dating back to the 16th century. Not only is it one of the largest fortifications on the subcontinent but it is also one of the best-preserved. 

One could easily wander around Rhotas for an entire day, checking all of the old watchtowers and walking along battlements. Perhaps you could imagine you’re a soldier standing guard against the local tribes. Or perhaps, like me, you just like the melancholic nature of ruins. 

I will say that despite the excellent condition of the fort, the amount of garbage here is a bit sad. Many of the old cisterns, which are incredible feats of architecture, are filled with trash by this point. Seems a shame for this place to have survived 500 years, only to become a bit of a dump. Nonetheless, Rohtas is still worth visiting!

At 2.5 hours, this is a pretty long drive from the city. One could even argue that it barely counts as “a thing to do in” Islamabad. I will contest that Rohtas is in the middle of nowhere so no matter from which direction you’re coming, it will still take a few hours to arrive.

Since you’ve already driven out this far as well, you might also consider visiting nearby Malot. There is another less impressive fort here but it does feature some pretty intricate ruined temples.

Cool Off at Neelan Bhoto or Bruti

Hidden deep inside the Margalla Hills are a handful of remote grottos and valleys. Clean, refreshing, and turquoise in color, the waters here are great for swimming or just admiring. 

Neelan Bhoto comes highly recommended by a local expert in the region. To reach here, you will need to arrive at the eponymously named village first, then walk or take a motorbike on a dirt track to reach the pools. The pools of Neelan Bhoto are famous for their brilliant color and large schools of fish. 

Fishing is illegal at the pools so please don’t try. Swimming is allowed though.

Another possible place to go for a dip is Bruti . Bruti is a series of streams and cascades that is more of a hike than Neelan Bhoto. 

To reach the falls, you’ll need to first arrive at the parking lot for Loh-e-Dandi and then walk to the Bari Imam Shrine before hitting the trail to Bruti. It can seem a bit vague how to get there but this guide offers the most comprehensive explanation I’ve found yet.

Note that both Neelan Bhoto and Bruti will be very busy in the summer months. If you’re looking for a quieter time, visit in the winter. Trust me, it’ll still be hot then.

Visit the Shah Allah Ditta Caves

The Shah Allah Ditta Caves are another interesting Buddhist archeological site located very close to Islamabad. Originally used as a place for deep meditation, the caves are now largely abandoned. 

There isn’t much in the way of religious reliquary leftover at the caves. There are some old murals and paint on the old walls but it’s all quite faded. 

The caves themselves still look very cool. There are some gnarly banyan trees scattered around the site, complete with hanging roots that sometimes twist around the caves themselves.

The Shah Allah Ditta Caves are a relatively quiet and undiscovered tourist attraction. If you’re looking for something alternative to do in Islamabad, this is a good choice. Consider doing this in conjunction with Taxila. 

Go Chasing waterfalls 

Umbrella Falls and Sajjikot Falls are two semi-famous waterfalls located quite close to one another. They can easily be knocked off back-to-back in a single day. 

First, you will need to reach the village of Poona, which is a bit of a long drive (2.5 hours). Once you arrive, find the parking area and pay to park (50-100 rupees). Now you will begin the hike to Umbrella Falls.

Of the two waterfalls mentioned, Umbrella Falls is arguably the more photogenic. It has only become famous in recent years by local influencers. The hike down to the falls from parking takes around 30-45 minutes. It’s a bit steep but there should be ropes there to help. Bring a plastic bag for your camera!

Further down the road from Umbrella Falls is Sajjikot. Like Umbrella, this waterfall entails a semi-steep descent from the parking area but nothing an experienced hiker can’t handle. 

NOTE that there are reports that the water at Sajjikot is quite contaminated, being runoff from a local village. Swim here at your own risk.

Go on a Temple Tour

So far we’ve introduced several Muslim and Buddhist places to worship as potential things to do around Islamabad. Why not add in a Hindu one and make it a hat trick?

Katas Raj is a Hindu temple complex located only 2 hours away from Islamabad in northern Punjab. Judging from the grandeur and size of the complex, one might mistakenly think that they’re actually in India! (Just don’t say this out loud in Pakistan.) 

This complex was, at one point in time, one of the most important sites in all of Hinduism. There are several stories surrounding its creation and purpose, which you’ll have to ask about when you arrive. 

Unsurprisingly, the temples were a bit neglected after the partition, but, in recent years, the government has actually tried to restore them. Though still a bit dilapidated, the grounds are a bit less littered and the pools are not so terribly polluted as they used to be.

So if want to go on a tour of three of the world’s major religions in one day, you certainly can. Combine this with Taxila and Faisal Mosque for an amazing full-day experience in Islamabad.

Beat the Heat in Murree

Murree is where the British Army used to run away to in order to escape the oppressive summer heat of Punjab. Located high in the Margalla Hills, it is far cooler up here than in muggy, often boiling Islamabad. 

Following the extradition of the British, Murree became a mountain resort town for high-ranking Pakistani officials and families. It is now one of the most popular places to visit near Islamabad, at least among locals. 

Aside from the agreeable climate, most of Murree’s appeal comes from the old colonial architecture and forested setting. There are a number of trails you can walk on around the town or there is a chair-lift offering some lovely views of the surrounding Kashmiri mountains.

Stay away from the amusement parks in Muree though. They are awful and have largely ruined the vibe of the place.

Where to Stay in Islamabad

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, Islamabad is arranged like a giant grid, which makes wrapping your head around the city quite easy. 

There are hotels spread throughout Islamabad but, for one reason or another, I always end up staying on the edge of the city in E or F 11/12. This area is pretty nice – hosting mostly ambassadors’ homes – and is relatively chill as well. You’ll be further away from Islamabad’s main attractions, but they’re still just a short taxi ride away.

Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Islamabad:

• Grand Islamabad Hotel – Hitting the “just right” mark in terms of service, location, and price, this is a great all-around 3-star hotel in Islamabad for a comfortable stay
• Backpackers Hostel & Guesthouse Islamabad – A step up from the typical budget hostel, this comfy spot is a great place to meet other travelers while keeping your spending down. Tell Haris Chris says hi!
• Islamabad Regalia Hotel – Classy and romantic without being outrageously expensive, this hotel in Islamabad has a good location for both hiking and city attractions.

Important note : I’ve heard a few people say that Islamabad’s tap water is fine to drink. I call bullshit.

I still insist on purifying the water. Pakistani tap water just has a horrible reputation to begin with and I’ve definitely gotten sick mysteriously while staying in local hotels. Don’t put yourself at risk. Use a purifier, like the GRAYL Geopress , and save yourself the trip to the bathroom.

Getting To and From Islamabad

Islamabad is very easy to reach from all major Pakistani cities. You could take private transport, like Kareem or a shared taxi, to get there, but unless you’re coming from the north or just really need the privacy, I suggest using the bus. 

I suggest using Daewoo when traveling around Pakistan . It’s one of the largest carriers in the country and the buses are very comfortable. Compared to northern buses like NATCO, Daewoos are like limousines. 

Islamabad doesn’t have a bus station per se. Rather, all buses bound for Islamabad actually stop in Rawalpindi. Here is the location of the main station .

TIP : Make sure you book your taxi or Uber from the Pindi station BEFORE you step outside. Otherwise, you will be harassed by local drivers and will also lose that juicy WiFi. 

The nearest major cities to Islamabad are Peshawar (3 hours) and Lahore (5 hours). If you’re coming from Lahore, you will stop at a large rest area about â…— of the way. 

It is possible to fly in to Islamabad but that is really only applicable if you’re coming from either the north, the far south i.e. Karachi, or internationally. The airport is located about 30-40 minutes away from the city. Expect to pay around 1000-1500 rupee for a taxi. If it is late at night, the fixed taxi cost is 2000 rs.

Cuisine With German Flavor

Full of rich, meaty, carbohydrate-dense dishes like bratkartoffeln (pan-fried potatoes), bratwurst (sausage), roulade (thinly rolled meat), and schnitzel (cutlet), German cuisine is some of the best comfort food around. Luckily, you don’t have to book a flight with Lufthansa to enjoy a tall, wheaty glass of weissbier alongside a steaming bowl of käsespätzle (cheesy egg noodles) because we’ve gathered a list of the best German restaurants in America. And if we missed your favorite restaurant — particularly if you know of one in Mississippi where we couldn't track one down — let us know in the comments.

Alabama: Hildegard’s German Cuisine

Not only does Hildegard’s have all the German staples — spätzle, schnitzel, and a whole lot of sausages — but this Huntsville haunt also boasts German desserts and beers. So if you’re looking for the full experience and you’re an Alabama native, check out Holdegard’s for some authentic German grub.

Alaska: West Berlin

Whether you want to grab a kölsch and a pretzel or dig into a roasted chicken, West Berlin offers the best of German cuisine. We’re especially happy to see currywurst on the menu, a street food specialty that’s difficult to find outside of Germany. Although the dish costs nearly four times as much as it does in Berlin, the delectable combination of curry sauce and sausage is (almost) priceless.

Located in a Colorado Springs strip mall, Uwe’s German Restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside, and, well, the inside doesn’t look great either. But you don’t go to Uwe’s for the interior decorating; you go for the tender sauerbraten, crispy schnitzel, and homemade spätzle.

German’s take bread very, very seriously. You can get a taste of Germany’s rich baking tradition at Dover’s Bavarian Bakery & Deli. It’s not a sit-down restaurant, but the pastries, breads, and sandwiches get so many raves from Yelp reviewers that we had to add this place to our list.

District of Columbia: Old Europe

This Washington, D.C. restaurant may be called OId Europe, but it's focused on just one part — Germany. Wienerschnitzel, zweibelsteak, and all kinds of sausage are on the menu. As expected, there's lots of different beers, and original German stemware is for sale. Be sure to ask what's available, since it's not all on display.

Hawaii: Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe

Kahului (Maui)

As one of the few German restaurants in Hawaii, Brigit & Bernard doesn’t have much competition. Nevertheless, this eatery ranks in Trip Advisor’s top 10 for the area, and all the fried food makes our stomachs grumble. It’s also one of the few restaurants on our list that offers a wider selection of cuisines, including a full pasta menu.

Indiana: Heidelberg Haus

Serving a mixture of traditional dishes and American bar food, Hessen Haus is a beer drinker’s dream. This Des Moines pub features over 175 German and European beers — along with a few specialty cocktails. As is typical for German-style pubs, Hessen Haus has a down-home aesthetic going for it, with exposed rafters and a sturdy wooden bar.

This relaxed German eatery was founded by Berlin immigrant Sven Vorkauf and has all the beer and foodstuffs any European-leaning customer might want, but with a playful twist. The Drunk Pig is a slow-roasted pork roast sandwich, while the Nola Schnitzel is a schnitzel sandwich with a crawfish remoulade slaw on a muffuletta bun. 

Maine: Schulte & Herr

With an impressive 4.9/5 rating on Google, Schulte & Herr has earned a reputation for serving good, honest German food in an unpretentious setting. Beyond the food, fans of this Portland gem say that the restaurant is particularly affordable, especially since it’s BYOB.

Maryland: Old Stein Inn

Massachusetts: Bronwyn Restaurant

Bronwyn offers upmarket German and central-European fare just outside of Boston, including riesling sauerkraut and pork schnitzel. Budget-conscious diners can order the $38 three-course meal, which will let you try a smattering of the restaurant’s best dishes. Despite this eatery’s higher prices, the decor is casual and German, with plenty of Bavarian flags and old-world knicknacks.

While Germany has an American-style restaurant called Mississippi , we couldn’t find a single German or Austrian eatery in the entire Magnolia state.

If you prefer white tablecloths to battered wooden benches, then this posh, contemporary German restaurant fits the bill. Elevated entrees like sea scallops with duck liver, artisan greens, and mango vinaigrette will run you $30 and up, but there are few restaurants in the U.S. that do German fine dining as well as Affäre . If you still have doubts, know that an online reviewer described his dinner here as the “best meal” he’d ever had in his life.

Montana: Bayern Brewing

This brewery serves its own German-style beers along with pub staples like bratwurst, käsespätzle, and frikadelle. And with Bayern native Jurgen Knoller at the helm, you know that this won’t disappoint. If you still doubt Bayern Brewing’s authenticity, know that they brew their beers per Germany’s 14th-century Reinheitsgebot, which dictates what ingredients are allowed in German beer.

Nebraska: Rathskeller Bier Haus

Beyond bratwurst and beer, there’s not much here that’s German. But as long as you’re not a stickler for traditional German cuisine, you’re likely to enjoy the salads, sandwiches, and brats — and have a great time — at Rathskeller Bier Haus in Omaha. The fact that the restaurant has its own Oktoberfest celebration and plenty of German beer to go around should tell you all you need to know.

Nevada: Cafe Berlin

Cafe Berlin sits in a nondescript shopping complex a few miles down the road from the drunken tourists, tense gamblers, and bright lights of the Las Vegas strip. But this eatery’s unimpressive facade belies the excellent German cuisine that lies within. Cafe Berlin serves up all of the German classics — spaetzle, schnitzel, and wurst — in huge portions. And if you’d like to try a smattering of Germany’s greatest hits, the giant sampler plate is an excellent option.

New Hampshire: The Hop Knot

New Jersey: Best of the Wurst

Best of the Wurst offers great views and a large selection of German wursts, though it’s not the most authentic of German eateries. Customers can order soft shell po’boys and all-American cheeseburgers along with old-world dishes like Polish pierogies and rouladen.

New Mexico: The Bavarian Restaurant

Taos Ski Valley

A big glass of beer and a warm pretzel in a German-style lodge at 3,000 feet elevation sounds pretty ideal, which is why we’re recommending The Bavarian Restaurant . Located at the Taos ski village in New Mexico, this resort restaurant serves apple strudel, sausages, and, of course, beer — with beautiful snow-capped mountains in view. Nevertheless, this is a resort restaurant, so don’t expect the (expensive) food to blow you away.

New York: Heidelberg

North Carolina: Waldhorn Restaurant

Waldhorn is a beer drinker’s dream. Not only do they have a considerable number of pilsners and hefeweizens on tap, but they also have their own beer club. Members pay a one-time $30 fee, which includes a half-liter stein and discounts every time you come in. Waldhorn’s menu is also notable for its range and authenticity, which shouldn’t be a surprise given owner Gitta Maier professional culinary training in Germany. 

North Dakota: Würst Bier Hall

Ohio: Schmidt’s Sausage Haus

Schmidt’s is more than just a great German restaurant; it’s a bonafide historical landmark that traces its history back to the 1880s, when J. Fred Schmidt emigrated from Germany and opened a meat packing plant in the heart of Columbus’ German Village. That has evolved into a well-known sausage brand and one of Ohio’s top-rated German restaurants, which is saying a lot given its many German eateries. Just be prepared to wait because this place gets crowded.

Oklahoma: Royal Bavaria

Oklahoma City

Oklahoma’s best German restaurant, Royal Bavaria , is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and yet it has thrived as one of the state’s top-rated eateries since the 1990s. That’s in part thanks to its commitment to authentic southern German cuisine, including house specialties such as broiled beef brisket in a sour cream and horseradish sauce.

Oregon: Stammtisch

From fried potato cakes and fries to schnitzel and roasted chicken, Portland’s Stammtisch features a variety of both small and large classic German plates. Of course, Stammtisch also has an eclectic beer menu, with over a dozen German beers (and a cider) on tap. Like many German restaurants, Stammtisch’s aesthetic is dominated by an abundance of exposed bricks and large wooden tables.

Rhode Island: Bronwyn

East Providence

While the food at Bronwyn covers Germany and Eastern and Central Europe, you will recognize lots of German favorites here, including spaetzel, schnitzel, and sauerbraten. You can order the house beer by the pint, the liter, or the boot.

South Carolina: Julia’s German Stammtisch

South Dakota: The Sled Haus

Tennessee: Schulzes Schnitzel Kitchen

Texas: Walburg German Restaurant

You won’t look out of place dressed in a dirndl or lederhosen at Walburg German Restaurant . Well, maybe a bit, but this restaurant does look like something you’d find in Southern Germany. They’ve got the long tables, outdoor biergarten, and colors of the Bavarian flag plastered everywhere — not to mention plenty of beer and meaty dishes like sauerbraten and schnitzel.

Utah: Weller’s Bistro

Countryman’s Pleasure is a quaint German-Austrian restaurant in the heart of rural Vermont. The charm of the eatery’s New England architecture is reason enough to dine here, though patrons say the food is also delicious. Highlights include veal schnitzel, chicken cordon bleu, and strawberry-rhubarb pavlova.

The restaurant’s old-world Alpine delights include bratwurst fondue and papet vaudois (sausage served over leeks and potato). But note that a meal here will be expensive.

There's a misconception that all Caribbean islands are the same. However, as someone who's been traveling to the Caribbean for almost two decades, I've found that each island has its own distinct food, festivals, and cultural traditions.

After visiting 20 Caribbean islands, I can see why the area is such a hot spot for tourism. In fact, travel to the Caribbean is already off to a strong start this year, with many destinations seeing an uptick in visitors compared to 2023 .

As someone who's spent a lot of time in the Caribbean, these are the five islands I'd love to return to and the two I'd skip.

St. Lucia offers wellness activities and great food.

Though St. Lucia is typically billed as a romantic destination , I visited on a solo trip and had a blast exploring the island.

Some of my favorite activities included a mud bath in Sulphur Springs, a rum and chocolate tour, and an afternoon boat ride past The Pitons.

St. Lucians also have some great street food and love to have a good time. During my stay, I headed to the lively Friday night Gros Islet street party for grilled conch and fried fish straight off the boat.

Dominica is great for hiking and natural attractions.

Nicknamed " the nature island ," Dominica is one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets.

One of my favorite excursions was a hike to Trafalgar Falls, a pair of stunning waterfalls about a 20-minute drive from the island's capital city, Roseau.

I also rode horseback on the island's black-sand beaches and floated on an inner tube through Titou Gorge, a cave with a hidden waterfall and swimming hole.

St. John has gorgeous beaches.

I spent my 15th wedding anniversary on St. John, the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. One of the highlights of my stay was a beach day at Trunk Bay.

The beach is located inside Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, and though there's a small entry fee, it's worth every penny. The beach is framed by lush mountains, and towering palm trees dot the wide, sandy shore. In short, it's paradise.

St. John isn't a hub for partying or late-night entertainment, but the island's gorgeous sunsets and natural setting are ideal for honeymoons and special anniversary trips.

Grenada is a snorkeling hot spot with a unique national park.

During my stay on Grenada, I encountered lots of warm and inviting locals, who would strike up conversations and ask how I was enjoying my visit.

Besides enjoying the popular Grand Anse Beach, I booked a day tour to Grand Etang National Park to check out Grand Etang Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by a lush rainforest.

I ended my stay on Grenada with a snorkeling trip to Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park to see the submerged sculptures.

Turks and Caicos are great for decompressing on the beach.

There's a reason Turks and Caicos are a magnet for celebrities and socialites, but you don't have to be an A-lister to enjoy the islands.

Providenciales is the most populated island in Turks and Caicos. Provo, as some locals call it, offers a laid-back, tranquil beach vacation. Most hotels on Provo are located along Grace Bay, a picture-perfect stretch of pearly white sand and turquoise water.

Water sports like jet skiing, snorkeling, and clear-bottom kayaking are popular, but I was content to spend most of my days alternating between reading on the beach and cooling off in the pool.

However, Grand Cayman was one of the priciest islands I’ve visited.

Grand Cayman has a lot going for it: beautiful resorts, delicious food, and a flight from Miami that's under two hours.

The soft white sand and sparkling turquoise water of Seven Mile Beach have also helped make Grand Cayman a popular vacation spot .

But when I visited, I experienced a bit of sticker shock since US currency doesn't go as far as it does on other islands. The Caymanian dollar has a fixed exchange rate, and one Caymanian dollar is worth $1.21 USD.

I've visited more affordable islands with equally stunning beaches like Klein Curaçao Beach in Curaçao, Crane Beach in Barbados, and Palm Beach in Aruba.

Grand Bahama left me wanting more.

One of my first trips to the Caribbean was to Grand Bahama via a ferry from Fort Lauderdale . My husband and I stayed on the island for about a week, filling up on fresh conch and visiting the Port Lucaya marketplace.

While I enjoyed the laid-back stay, I've found that other Bahamian islands have more to see and do.

If you want to be closer to the action, skip Grand Bahama for New Providence, which is home to top-notch restaurants and hotels, historic landmarks like Queen's Staircase, and the annual Junkanoo parade.

Zurich joined Hong Kong and Singapore at the front of the ranking, joined by three other Swiss cities—Geneva, Basel, and Bern. New York was the highest-ranked U.S. city on the list, landing in seventh place, followed by London. The British capital bumped up to the eighth spot after coming in 17th last year. Rounding out the top 10 were Nassau, Bahamas, and Los Angeles , respectively.  

Interestingly, there were only seven U.S. cities that fell into the top 20, including Honolulu and San Francisco. “As U.S.-based companies continue to source talent globally, inflationary pressures may give some inbound foreign nationals pause to accept a position in some of the high-cost cities and metro areas in the U.S.,” Vince Cordova, partner and mobility advisory leader at Mercer US, explained to CNN Travel .  

At the same time, Toronto was named the most expensive city in Canada, while Sydney was the Pacific region’s costliest place for expats. Dubai, which landed in 15th place, jumped up three spots this year as the priciest city in the Middle East. The biggest differences compared to Mercer’s 2023 ranking were in Mexico. Mexico City climbed 46 spots to its current position at 33, while Monterrey went up 40 places to 115.  

Conversely, the survey found that cities with the lowest costs of living were Pakistan’s Islamabad and Nigeria’s Lagos and Abuja due to “currency depreciations.”

Uprooting your life and moving to another side of the world for work isn’t always a walk in the park.

For many expats, the cost of living is a major factor in deciding where to go. And guess what? Hong Kong has once again claimed the title of the most expensive city in the world for overseas workers, according to the 2024 Mercer Cost of Living Survey , released Monday.

This bustling Asian metropolis, which topped the list in both 2022 and 2023, is followed closely by Singapore. The two cities have long been known as global financial hubs, with the former in particular being home to a number of British and French nationals who work in finance.

Swiss cities dominate much of the rest of the top 10, with Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern taking third, fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.

The Mercer report, which examined 226 cities, compared the cost of more than 200 items including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.

New York was the highest-ranking US city, coming in seventh. London, which was 17th last year, made a surprising jump to eighth place. Nassau, Bahamas secured ninth, with Los Angeles rounding out the top 10.

“The cost of housing is a major factor in the Cost of Living City Ranking,” the study notes, highlighting that employees who spend a large chunk of their income on rent or mortgages have “less disposable income for other expenses.”

Between 2023 and 2024, rental prices varied significantly across cities. Additionally, inflation and exchange-rate fluctuations directly impacted the pay and savings of international workers.

Toronto was ranked as the most expensive city in Canada for international employees at 92, followed by Vancouver at 101. Some cities saw significant jumps, like Mexico City’s leap up 46 places to 33, and Monterrey climbing 40 places to 115.

The cost of living in the US remains a significant issue, with seven American cities in the top 20.

Vince Cordova, partner and mobility advisory leader at Mercer US, suggests in an interview with CNN that inflationary pressures might give some foreign nationals pause before accepting positions in high-cost US cities. He advises employers to be transparent about cost of living and net pay information to help prospective staff make informed decisions.

At the other end of the spectrum, Pakistan’s Islamabad and Nigeria’s Lagos and Abuja were the least expensive cities, partly due to currency depreciations. Among the 200 products considered in the rankings, olive oil saw the most notable price hike.

“Cost-of-living challenges have had a significant impact on multinational organizations and their employees,” Yvonne Traber, Mercer’s global mobility leader, told the outlet.

“It is important for organizations to stay informed about cost-of-living trends and inflation rates and seek input from employees on these issues to effectively manage their effects.”
