La-La Land Unveils New STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE Remastered Sountrack, Official Tie-In to THE DIRECTOR’S EDITION

Connect with trekcore.

Our musical friends at La-La Land Records today have announced a new  Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack collection, in anticipation of the forthcoming 4K remastering of the film’s Director’s Edition later this year!

The new 2-CD  Star Trek: The Motion Picture — Remastered and Expanded Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was unveiled today with a 44-track, 2.5-hour running time, fully restored, remixed and mastered from the first generation multi-track masters.

Original album co-producer and composer Jerry Goldsmith’s long time scoring engineer Bruce Botnick oversaw this new edition, along with  Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition post-production supervisor / associate producer Mike Matessino , making this new release the official tie-in soundtrack to  The Director’s Edition .

Many of us have purchased the previous  Motion Picture soundtracks in the past, including La-La Land’s lavish 3-CD collection from 2012 (now out of print) — so what makes this new 2-CD edition any different from what might already be in your collection?

Fans have already created an impressively-detailed comparison of the many TMP score collections here, but Matessino addressed the question — and more — by way of the Film Score Monthly forums over the last week.

“[We] actually tried to stop the [ 1999 “20th Anniversary” Sony soundtrack ] release because we already knew “The Director’s Edition” was happening, but the actions of certain parties caused Paramount to cave — not only to let the release come out, but also led to us being prevented from including an isolated score track as well the alternate score synced to picture on the DVD that finally came out in 2001. [La-La Land’s 2012 3-CD set] was from the original masters, as you know, and was done as an ultimate collection of music for this title. Subsequently there was a vinyl release of the main score. Both projects were a great success. But something you may not have noticed is that ALL references to Sony Music were GONE from the vinyl release. Why?? Because it turned out that the original 1979 Columbia Records soundtrack agreement was only for a 15-year term….which means the rights expired in 1994. Therefore… Sony Music had NO RIGHTS TO PUT OUT THE 1999 VERSION, which, by the way, used the incorrect performance for every single track that was added to it, with one small exception. Paramount Music now controls the soundtrack rights to ‘Star Trek — The Motion Picture’ and they have since 1994. (They simply didn’t know it and they’ve had to work with Sony Music to settle things up from the past 22 years.) This is now THEIR “Expanded and Remastered Edition,” and as far as I’m concerned it is the album that we had wanted to do in 2000, but of course with far superior audio quality that benefited from the involvement of Bruce Botnick and the first generation multi-track transfers, which were run in anticipation of the updated “Director’s Edition” that’s currently in the works. The 3-CD set is a glorious collectors item to be treasured, but this 2-CD version will now be THE soundtrack album, from Paramount, for ‘Star Trek — The Motion Picture.'”

He also added some additional details about the difference between the sound quality on the 2012 and this new 2022 edition, along with some other information throughout that same discussion thread.

“The multi-track transfers in 2011 for 2012 LLL release were done in expectation of [a remastered] Director’s Edition happening shortly after. We didn’t think it would be a 10 year wait, but the material sat around ready to go and Atmos fortuitously came on the scene in the interim. For the soundtrack, the mixes are the same as last time, but it was an opportunity to fix anything remaining that was at all bothersome to my ear. Upgrades are esoteric in character and likely wouldn’t be noticeable on an average listen.”
“All of [the] alternate incorrect takes that we included [in the 2012 release] for no reason other than because they were on the 1999 release…. wrong takes expanded by a company that didn’t have the rights to the album at the time and who basically told off the director of the movie. But at least it padded out a third CD and allowed us to include the beam and synth material, false starts with chit-chat and the two cover recordings. We made lemonade and the set certainly remains collectable for those tracks.”

new star trek soundtrack

“The original album track, “Ilia’s Theme,” which features Ian Fraser on piano, is not the same as the Overture. The 1999 release moved it to the start of the CD because they didn’t know the difference. It’s 100% a track recorded for album. The long version of the “Overture” features a French horn rather than piano. The second half of it is identical to the short version, which they used in 1979 to keep the reel running time down, yes. The 2012 LLL set had both but started with the short version; now we start with the long one. As for “Ilia’s Theme” — it has ONLY been heard sourced from the live stereo mix off the 1630 digital master. Until now.”
“It was a collaboration [between Botnick and myself]. I did all the editing and cleanup, Bruce did the mix and mastering. We then had to revisit it a few times, first for the modified “Inner Workings” track, then for the vinyl, with high resolution outputs and appropriate adjustments made for that, then for the new 2-CD version this year so that I could recreate the original album tracks (“The Enterprise” is the only track that is exactly the same in the film), and then again for the new film mix, for which I conformed the multi-track to the picture and then Bruce mixed. We’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of that transferred data from 2011.”
“For the main score and the early alternates, the audio is the same as the 2012 edition, except for going back to 192k 24bit outputs and applying some very minor esoteric fixes here and there. I had Bruce Botnick mix out the other takes that were needed to recreate the album performances and then that was put together. For the 2012 release the OST came from the 1979 44k 16bit digital stereo 1630 tape. This was a completely separate operation from my conforming the multi-track music to the Director’s Edition, which Bruce then remixed.”

Finally, Matessino made his personal case for why this new edition of the Motion Picture score is important to him:

“Sometimes showing love for a score and support for the labels are factors in purchasing a new version. In this case, yes, from a sonic standpoint there may not be a reason to upgrade — although there are some fixes, a few title and track break changes, and the original album program recreated from the newer mixes — but for the most part the intent is to now have the definitive soundtrack that will exist physically so that it can reach new listeners as they hopefully revisit the movie or discover it for the first time. Add to that the administrative aspect that it’s now fully a Paramount Music title, so there were multiple great reasons to have this come out. This is the one that will be around from now on. I personally feel that if you love this score and there’s no financial hardship in buying it, it’s something you will enjoy having.”

‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ Soundtrack Producer Offers Details On New Score Release

Last week, LaLaLand Records released a new limited-edition 2-CD set of Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award-nominated score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture . This new release serves as the official tie-in soundtrack to the movie’s forthcoming 4K UHD Director’s Edition restoration . TrekMovie asked Post-Production Supervisor/Associate Producer Mike Matessino, who is also working on the 4K Director’s Edition , to give us some details.

LaLaLand first released the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 2012 on a 3-CD set, now out of print, that was restored, remixed, and mastered from the first generation multi-track masters. Matessino gave us insights into what’s new for the 2022 2-CD release and more.

Roll #1 of 37 ready for transfer. September 24, 1979 was Day One of the scoring sessions for STAR TREK–THE MOTION PICTURE (Mike Matessino)

What was the impetus for this new release?

The impetus was simply that La-La Land Records sold out of the 3-CD version that they released in 2012 and it’s a title that they wanted to keep in their catalog. What label wouldn’t? It’s a score that should always be available. All along the plan was to do a 2-CD version this time, for reasons both financial and administrative. But I was also very interested in basically putting together the release that our Director’s Edition team originally wanted to do in 2001 but we were not able to. Largely that was because of the 1999 Sony Legacy expansion, which we had actually tried to stop because we already knew the original Director’s Edition project was going to happen. That release ended up having many problems, with mostly incorrect performances for the added tracks and it was not at all complete.

Additionally, assumptions were made at the time that Sony Music had perpetuity album rights for the title, but it turns out that they didn’t; those had expired in 1994, which meant that the 1999 release really shouldn’t have happened at all. This all got sorted out when La-La Land did the 3CD set in 2012. Once we got into 2021 and we knew that The Director’s Edition was, at last, going to be done properly, everything aligned for us to do a new definitive soundtrack for Star Trek: The Motion Picture that is now from Paramount Music. Serendipitously, La-La Land released a new version of the Star Trek II soundtrack last year and this was a great way to follow up that success.

October 2011: The first-generation 2-inch 16-track analog scoring master tapes are lined up for high-resolution transfer (Mike Matessino)

How much work was put into it? How did you decide what to include?

Basically, all of the work was done in 2012, but there were some adjustments done this time around. I redid the assembly from the high-resolution output files that Bruce Botnick made 10 years ago and cleaned up some very minor things along the way. But we also needed to do new mixes of certain takes that were heard on the original 1979 album, because this time we wanted to recreate that historic album from the first generation multi-track material. We didn’t do that last time, opting instead to just use the digital stereo master from 1979. As for what to include, it was very simple—the complete film score, a selection of alternates, and the 1979 album program, all in consistent quality.

November 2011: The multi-track remix of the music for STAR TREK–THE MOTION PICTURE commences in Ojai, California. Jerry Goldsmith’s longtime scoring engineer Bruce Botnick is likely on the phone with Avid Tech Support (Mike Matessino)

What are the differences between this and the 3-CD set?

Sonically the main score and the alternates are basically the same, with, as I said, just some minor cleanup, and then the 1979 album this time around is a re-creation from the same material used for the rest of the presentation. The 3CD set remains a be-all, end-all collector’s item as it includes other alternate takes, false starts, and scoring stage chit-chat, discrete beam and synthesizer tracks, and two theme cover versions, one by Bob James, and one a song based on the love theme that was recorded as a demo by Shaun Cassidy. There were other alternate takes on that release that were carried over only because they had been mistakenly used on the 1999 version, and it helped fill out the collection. But really what we now have is a lean presentation that we hope will be discovered by new listeners as we move closer to the release of The Director’s Edition . We’ve also made a few title and track break changes.

2021: One more time! Bruce Botnick works with the multi-track music masters for STAR TREK–THE MOTION PICTURE at his very-much-upgraded studio in Ojai. Organic cappuccino is handy, while in the background E.T. keeps time and Robby the Robot stands guard (Mike Matessino)

Ten years on from the 3-CD set, how did it feel to immerse yourself in this music again?

I’ve never NOT been immersed in it. The first time was on The Director’s Edition in 2000, then a year later we did 20 minutes of it in concert at the Hollywood Bowl. My work on all of the Star Trek feature scores then started around 2008, and transfers of the TMP tapes was in 2011. A few years later we needed to fix one track, “Inner Workings,” which was included on a 50th-anniversary collection in 2016 (and that fixed version is what’s on the new release.) That was the release that included the animated series music, which was a very challenging but ultimately satisfying piece of Star Trek musical history to work on. Next came the new Star Trek II , and finally back to The Motion Picture again for the new soundtrack and the new mix of the film. Along the way there have been many Jerry Goldsmith projects and lots of opportunities to work with Bruce Botnick, so what I really feel is truly grateful to have a lot of very wonderful music as a part of my daily life.

As someone who owns the 3-disc version (and the original “Nice Price” CD version and the flawed 1999 Sony/Legacy Recordings version), this is still very much a must-buy. As soon as I started playing the disc, I could tell the difference. There are subtle differences here and there that make it an enjoyable listening experience. Besides, Mike Matessino is sort of an authority on stuff like this. I’ve come to trust his word ever since the 1997 RCA Victor Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition soundtracks.

Fully agree Benjamin. I’m always heartened when I see Matessino attached to a project like this and like you I have the 3-disc set but will be purchasing this new version.

He did an incredible job of the RCA Victor SW SE soundtracks back in 1997, which for me are still a treasured item, but imagine what he could do sonically today with the same material!

I’d also like to see him tackle Indiana Jones after the well meaning but ultimately botched “Soundtrack Collection” back in 2008.

I have the 3 CD set, and purchased this new edition. Although sonically pretty much the same, the remastering of the OST program is the biggest factor. Also the separation of Games and Spock Walk into separate tracks in the film program was something I wanted.

No firm release date for the DE in 4K yet?

No one’s saying if it’s even done yet.

Actually it was reported a few weeks ago, that it was submitted for its final quality control check last month.

Still have the 20th anniversary 2cd with the bonus Roddenberry disc, bought it in 99. crazy its now gone beyond the 40th!

yep – that’s a good one.

I am an avid Trek soundtrack collector but honestly, the necessity for this release is beyond me. I already own three version of this wonderful soundtrack but since I no longer listen to it on CD but my digitalized mp3 collection, I doubt I’d be able to spot any difference in sound quality on my Laptop speakers :-)

I probably would have bought it being a completist, but since new Trek TV scores aren’t even released on physical discs anymore there simply is nothing to complete…

BTW: I’ve only recently discovered that the COMPLETE score for PRODIGY S.1.1 is out for download… almost 4 hours of Melumad’s great music available at basically the same price as the original pilot release :-) Now THAT is something, especially compared to Disney’s awful release policy concerning Star Wars Visions or WandaVision…

buy a propper sound system, its worth it!

My new flat is neither spacious enough nor am I bold enough to bother my neighbors with my listening on a proper sound system. I’m quite glad I just got two pairs of small bluetooth speakers in each room. It has to be sufficient. Yeah, I miss my childhood home… dearly…

I’m lucky enough to have an extensive and eclectic music collection (including certain soundtracks) from over the years, and am never stuck for a re-listen of my favourites when I feel like it.

And sure, it’s nice to have something on ‘in the background’ while I’m getting on with other things….but I find that nothing beats the ‘immersive sound’ of listening to something with some decent quality headphones on, and taking in some music that way.

I agree, I don’t even have my CD player attached to my stereo system any longer. I have everything on mp3.

I love the Star Wars SE and 3-disc Star Trek sets and have a number of tracks from these sets on my player. (hint: when you’re late for work and driving like a jackass – the asteroid chase from Empire Strikes Back is da bomb! – – also, if you’re driving like an angry jackass, the chase scene tracks from Bourne Identity !)

I wish Matessino had simply re-issued the 3-disc set and then focused on mastering an optimized for streaming/mp3 version that actually kicks but on a player over bluetooth. That’s what the entire music industry should be focused on with their insanely huge libraries – – they’d get some more of my money for that!

I’m buying. Thank goodness it’s in the superior CD format. Never bought into that “it sounds richer” BS from people who are confusing that slight background noise you get with the outdated technology of LP’s with better sound…lol

no vinyl :(

Will be available with the laserdisc reissue of TMP. 😉

La-La Land released it on vinyl a few years ago.

https://www.discogs.com/release/10017809-Jerry-Goldsmith-Star-Trek-The-Motion-Picture

This is good news as the previous LaLand release I ruined by leaving one of the CDs in the van player where it eventually got stuck. It probably melted from overplay and baking in the summer heat over the years. I don’t mind plunking down $$ for another set.

Its kind of funny in a way this movie is still being worked on 43 years after its initial release.

As this was my first time at a truly cinematic event with the full curtain treatment, overture, packed house, the movie with its all its flaws and beauty holds special memories for me. It was like getting your first new car (the one you wanted..not a hand me down), first kiss (ugh my cousin..we were playing ‘getting married’..been in therapy since).

If they don’t restore the original Klaxon alarm, the original warp drive and engine room sound effects, I may consider learning the minimal software needed to restore them, myself. :)

“first kiss (ugh my cousin..we were playing ‘getting married’..been in therapy since).”

Way to much information. Outside that, I own the 3 CD set. Sooooo…

First kiss with the cousin and a Trekkie? Hmm…that sounds like a character from the big bang theory. 😁

I doubt those sounds will be restored to the theatrical versions as the DE is Robert Wise’s final cut. They are adding a few things that got left out in the original DVD but I’d can’t see them walking back on something Mr. Wise is no longer here to approve.

done! Matessino is a treasure. Hope he gets the keys to the Star Wars universe again

I wonder what the rights issue is that they can’t offer for sale a digital edition for when the physical goes out of print/stock. Seems a crime against art that the work is wasted because of economics of physical inventory. Or offer an on-demand printing or something for an extra $15 or something. I’d do that in a heartbeat for a lot of the stuff LaLa has offered but is out of print and otherwise unavailable.

Shaun Cassidy song based on the Love Theme? This I gotta hear!

Here it is. https://youtu.be/7HYpkJQGyOg

That’s been available for years.

painful lyrics, but that dirty bass guitar – it’s just a perfect match for Goldsmith. Every time I hear a Goldsmith ballad now, I run that dirty base on the expansive moments and the key changes in my head for everything Goldsmith has ever written.

I can’t hear that with John Williams.

Clearly Goldsmith was a stoned, long-haired, head-banging rocker at heart!

I’d really love to hear someone but together a rock opera of Star Trek and Star Wars. Hint, hint Paramount!

BTW, the Bob James disco Star Trek is totally craptacular. I can’t figure out why Goldsmith didn’t sue! Obscene, because Star Trek deserves a Mego Cantina Band track…

So sad, love a lot of other Bob James.

Any word about the TNG movies 4k release??

Probably not. They’re to busy with “Picard”

Nice but I already have the 3 disc version. And I’m happy with that.

now that I have this in hand, next to the recently released ST2:WoK disc….I hoping we get ST3-9 to with the same treatment. It looks like a little collection is budding :) [fingers crossed]

Man, yeah we really need a ST3 score released to go along with the new ST2 release. The Search for Spock has a tendency to live in WoK’s shadow, but you get Horner further developing themes he wrote for WoK while introducing some new things. The two really go hand in hand!

My copy arrived in the mail today and it was worth it. Far better than the 20th anniversary edition from 99.

‘Star Trek’ made its first ever musical episode, but was it any good? Our writers discuss

This article contains spoilers for “Subspace Rhapsody,” the ninth episode of Season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .”

On Thursday, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” (Paramount+) debuted “Subspace Rhapsody,” which has been announced as the first musical episode in the franchise . (Some will, of course, remember Spock strumming on a Vulcan lute and Uhura singing in the original series or Data’s rendition of “Blue Skies” at Will and Deanna’s wedding in “Star Trek: Nemesis.”)

Whether or not one views this as an insult to or a delightful expansion of the series, it has become, if not quite de rigueur, not unusual for a comedy or drama or even a soap opera to get its inner “Rent” on. “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was perhaps the most ballyhooed show to take this step toward Broadway, but all sorts of series have danced into the footlights: “Fringe,” “Psych,” “Xena: Warrior Princess,” “Futurama,” “One Life to Live,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Community,” “Transparent” and more.

Entertainment and arts reporter Ashley Lee, who knows a lot about musicals but little about “Star Trek,” and television critic Robert Lloyd, who knows quite a bit about “Star Trek” and less about musicals (at least any written after 1970), got together to discuss the episode.

Illustration for Robert Lloyd's story about the greatness of the Star Trek franchise.

‘Star Trek’ is the greatest sci-fi franchise of all. Why it’s stood the test of time

Full of ideas and emotions, the ever-expanding ‘Star Trek’ canon is still finding new ways to go where no TV show has gone before, 55 years on.

Oct. 28, 2021

Ashley Lee: Because I love musical theater, I’m always intrigued when TV shows take the risk to make a musical episode. The task of creating original songs for the screen is already tricky enough, especially in a way that invites along the show’s weekly audience and still moves its stories forward. And then there’s the task of asking the actors to perform them, whether or not they’ve ever sung or danced onscreen before. It’s an episodic experiment that, over the years, only some shows have gotten right.

I admittedly put on the musical episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” with low expectations because, outside of “Little Shop of Horrors,” putting sci-fi to song hasn’t historically been so harmonious (R.I.P., “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”). Even though I had no prior connection to any of these characters, I found “Subspace Rhapsody” to be a pleasant surprise.

I loved how the songs, written by Kay Hanley and Tom Polce of the ’90s alt-rock band Letters to Cleo, poked enough fun at the oddity of suddenly breaking out into song without insulting the TV tradition. And I found it hilarious that the episode, directed by Dermott Downs and written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff, deemed “confessing highly personal, emotional information” a legitimate security threat. (When you think about it, such can definitely be true in the real world!)

I’m surprised that, after all these years, this is the first ever “Star Trek” musical episode. Robert, as a longtime fan of the franchise, were you open to the idea?

Two women and a Vulcan man stand shoulder to shoulder, singing

Robert Lloyd: In sci-fi fandom, any unusual step is bound to raise some hackles. But as a TV critic since before flat screens, I have seen at least a few of these “special musical episodes” mounted in otherwise nonmusical series. I suspect the impetus came not from viewer demand but from the producers or the writers, who are always looking for something new to entertain the audience and, not incidentally, themselves and was seized upon happily by cast members, many of whom will have had backgrounds in or at least a love of musical theater, even if only from their high school production of “Guys and Dolls” (which I mention because it was produced at my high school — not with me).

History shows there’s no sort of show more likely than another to take on this challenge, but of all the “Star Trek” series, “Strange New Worlds” is perhaps the one most amenable to it. It’s got a strong vein of humor, and, as a highly episodic show, it’s subject to — in fact, embraces — tonal shifts from week to week. This season has been particularly … goofy? Two weeks prior to “Subspace Rhapsody,” they aired a crossover with the animated spinoff “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” in which cartoon characters became flesh and fleshly characters cartoons.

‘Strange New Worlds,’ premiering Thursday on Paramount+, spins the franchise into a series with roots in its original rejected pilot.

May 4, 2022

I thought it was smart to give the musical element of the show a “scientific” rationale — if the usual “Trek” technobabble — with the Enterprise overwhelmed by feedback from a substance fault into which, on the inspiration of Carol Kane’s Pelia, they sent a playlist in an attempt to communicate musically.

And it’s quite appropriate for a season full of romantic subplots, including Ethan Peck’s Spock — who, you must know, is more about logic than feeling — having a thing with Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel, and security chief Noonien-Singh’s (Christina Chong) awkward reunion with a young James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), who doesn’t recall their relationship from an alternative timeline. (That bit may have made no sense to you, Ash.) Appropriately, the story makes it clear that heightened emotion is what causes the characters to sing — which is, of course, the underlying rationale of music theater.

All else aside, how did the music strike you? It was odd that although the music they fed into the fault was the “Great American Songbook” — the standards of early to mid-20th century popular song, often written for musicals — none of the songs in the episode were actually modeled on that tradition. Not much in the way of Jerome Kern or Rodgers and Hart there. It all sounded post-Andrew Lloyd Webber to me.

Una and James T. Kirk in yellow and black uniforms, climbing up a red ladder in a narrow tunnel.

Lee: Haha, you’re right! While I did appreciate the use of Cole Porter’s show tune “Anything Goes” as a very literal cue to the audience of the storytelling “rules” ahead, many of the tunes were more contemporary than Golden Age. The one that’s most “vintage” in style was the sweet duet “Connect to Your Truth,” when Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) shared key leadership advice with Lt. Kirk.

Regarding the romances, I admittedly became deeply invested in these will-they-won’t-theys by the end of their musical numbers. I particularly loved La’an Noonien-Singh‘s song “How Would That Feel,” about contemplating vulnerability; it was like an introspective, angsty version of “Company’s” “Being Alive” in the musical style of “Wicked” (and is a promising preview of her music — Chong just released a debut EP). And the stark differences in genre between Spock’s brooding electropop ballad “I’m the X” and Nurse Chapel’s Amy Winehouse-esque fellowship celebration “I’m Ready” definitely maximized the tension amid their miscommunication.

Clockwise from top left: Kiah McKirnan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sissy Spacek, Naomie Harris, Cass Bugge, Morningstar Angeline, Josh Brolin, Clarke Peters, Imogen Poots, and Adam Bartley. Scenes from "Night Sky" (Amazon), "Outer Range" (Amazon) and "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (Showtime).

How science fiction is creating a strange new world of prestige TV

New series take viewers into the future, into space and into the heart of very human matters.

May 18, 2022

Beyond those, the opening number titled “Status Report” was so strong — a perfect example of musicalizing a familiar routine of the world (think “Opening Up” from “Waitress” or “Good Morning Baltimore” from “Hairspray”) — and the choral, orchestral rendition of the show’s main title was a delight. Also, the double meaning of communications officer Nyota Uhura’s anthem “Keep Us Connected” was very satisfying and, in my opinion, only scratched the surface of Celia Rose Gooding’s vocal abilities (she earned a Tony nomination for her performance in “Jagged Little Pill”).

If “Star Trek” ever officially makes the leap to the stage, I imagine these three songs in particular would transfer well. (Though if so, I’m gonna need a full expansion of that brief interlude of autotuned, rapping Klingons.) Bravo to Hanley and Polce for writing all the music and lyrics of this episode; while many have attempted it over the years, only a few pop stars and rockers have successfully walked the tightrope of writing effective and entertaining stage musicals (e.g., Cyndi Lauper, David Byrne and Elton John).

Overall, did you enjoy “Subspace Rhapsody”? Was the first musical episode of the franchise worth the wait?

Uhura in a maroon and black uniform, sitting at spaceship controls.

Lloyd: I can’t say I was waiting for it, but I certainly enjoyed it. I’m all about nutty “Star Trek,” going back to “The Trouble With Tribbles,” and also found it a really effective way to embody the emotional crises being faced by “Strange New Worlds’” eminently likable characters. Certainly, the cast bursting into song (and the occasional dance), with music dropping in from … somewhere, is no more nonsensical than about, oh, a hundred things that have happened to the various starship crews over nearly six decades.

But let me ask you, did it make you liable to keep watching the series? (No judgment.)

Lee: Robert, these subplots were so genuinely compelling, even when concisely moved forward in song, that I’ll likely start this series from the beginning and continue on past this episode. Plus, I’m so intrigued by Lt. Kirk and Noonien-Singh’s romance in that alternate timeline!

Star Trek: Ranking All 13 Movie Soundtracks

Which one will be stuck in your head today?

Star Trek Insurrection

Unlike that other franchise whose name begins with "Star", Star Trek's cinematic musical identity has been surprisingly inconsistent over the past 40 years. With nearly every film came a new composer, leading to the franchise's near total lack of continued themes and leitmotifs across installments.

Without that thematic consistency, the franchise instead relied on tone – triumphant marches, sweeping overtures, romantic love themes, and catchy leitmotifs nudged the action along as much as any soaring vista, tragic death, or threatening space cloud.

Heavyweights like Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, and Micheal Giacchino have produced some of Trek's greatest music, while unknowns like Cliff Eidelman have delivered scores that are just as memorable. Of course there are some headaches in the bunch (sorry Beastie Boys don't count), but for the most part Star Trek's musical legacy is a beautiful and hummable one.

Here's our ranking of all 13 (and counting) Star Trek movie soundtracks from worst to best.

13. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home – Leonard Rosenman

Ditching all of the themes built across the previous two films by James Horner (to say nothing of Jerry Goldsmith's timeless material from Star Trek: The Motion Picture), Leonard Rosenman's music for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is an appropriately upbeat accompaniment to the film's comedic tone, if light on the expected fantasy and nobility of Star Trek film scoring.

Despite the score's Oscar nomination (the second and last for the franchises' music), much of the film lacks score due to director Leonard Nimoy's preference for more naturalistic dialogue scenes. What's left is a short soundtrack without much weight, heavily dated by the 1980s recording style and the inclusion of regrettable source music by The Yellowjackets. The structure of the main title is halting and let's not even talk about that odd Russian jig during Chekov's escape from the US Navy or the "look how much fun we're having" tone of the subsequent hospital chase sequence.

The highlight of this score is the brief but epic reprise of Alexander Courage's theme from Star Trek: The Original Series in the closing moments of the film ("Home Again and Credits" on the soundtrack album), but you'll probably just remember that profane punk song from the bus.

We Now Know Exactly When Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek Movie is Taking Place

Section 31 will feature at least one captain of a starship called Enterprise.

Michelle Yeoh in the 'Section 31' movie.

Michelle Yeoh is back in the Final Frontier. As the duplicitous Mirror Universe character Philippa Georgiou, Yeoh starred in three seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , but later in 2024 she’ll return in her own movie — Section 31 . Named for the clandestine espionage organization within Starfleet, Section 31 has just been described as a “spy thriller” by a new article in Variety . We’ve also got a new image of Yeoh as Georgiou, seemingly integrating someone with some very cyberpunk-looking gear. But the big news for Trek fans is something even bigger. It seems like we finally know when exactly Section 31 will be set.

Here’s why the revelation of a very specific Starfleet captain reveals roughly where we can expect Section 31 to take place.

Section 31 will feature an Enterprise captain

TORONTO, ONTARIO - SEPTEMBER 05: Kacey Rohl attends the "Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson And Th...

Kacey Rohl in 2019. In Section 31 , she’ll be the first person to play Rachel Garrett since Tricia O’Neil originated the role in 1990’s “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

As reported by Adam B. Vary for Variety , the character of Rachel Garrett will appear in Section 31 and be played by actress Kacey Rohl. In the larger Trek canon, Rachel Garrett is famous for being the captain of the USS Enterprise-C which was destroyed fighting the Romulans in the year 2344. At that point, Captain Garrett (as played by Tricia O'Neil) was a woman in her mid-forties. But, in Section 31 it seems we’ll be meeting “...a young Rachel Garrett.”

This one detail all but confirms that at least one aspect of the storyline for Section 31 will have to take place sometime before 2344, likely in the 2320s or 2330s. Which, believe it or not, is a largely undocumented and unexplored period of the larger Star Trek timeline.

A 24th-century TNG prequel

Tricia O'Neil as Captain Garrett in 'Yesterday's Enterprise.'

Captain Garrett’s time on the Enterprise-C is largely untold. But what happened before that is even hazier.

Because Section 31 features a younger version of Rachel Garrett, this means that at least part of the movie will be a full-on prequel to the era of The Next Generation . And, interestingly, this period of Trek history, from roughly the end of the TOS -era movies, to the start of TNG is a roughly 70 year-gap. The Undiscovered Country and the first part of Generations take place in 2293. The first TNG episode takes place in 2364. During this gap, a lot of Trek history happens, including the Federation’s war with the Cardassians, the finalization of peace with the Klingons, and Jean-Luc Picard’s tenure as Captain on the USS Stargazer .

But if Section 31 takes place in the 2320s, even some of those events are still in the future. If you take a hardcore deep-dive onto the ever-reliable Star Trek wiki, Memory Alpha, you’ll find that there are almost no notable events in the 2320 s at all, other than Jean-Luc Picard starting his studies at Starfleet Academy. When Georgiou was sent back in time in Discovery Season 31 by the Guardian of Forever, we were told that it would be close to a time period in which the Prime Universe and Mirror Universes had yet to fully drift apart.

Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) steps into the Guardian of Forever in 'Discovery' Season 3.

Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) steps into the Guardian of Forever in Discovery Season 3.

And yet, by putting Georgiou in the early 24th century, the new movie will likely sport a lot of retro Star Trek aesthetics. We know Starfleet officers were still rocking the “monster maroon” uniforms first introduced in The Wrath of Khan, and Strange New Worlds Season 1 even gave us a taste of what a modern redesign of those uniforms might look like. Plus, if this movie is filling in the backstory of Rache Garrett, this means the show will not only be a prequel for The Next Generation but also the origin story of an underrated Enterprise captain!

As of this writing, Section 31 is a stand-alone movie starring Michelle Yeoh. But, with this cut into the timeline of Trek, one can’t help but wonder if there’s not room for even more adventures in this very specific slice of Trek history.

Section 31 is expected to hit Paramount+ in late 2024.
