7 reasons you need to visit Liverpool this year

Whatsapp

Places to visit and things to do in Liverpool on a very special year

Liverpool is famous for many things, but two of our favourites have got to be the warm scouse welcome and the city's ability to party eight days a week. So, where better to host this May's Eurovision Song Contest than in the iconic northern city? Liverpool will be packed with things to do during the Eurovision celebrations in May but the show goes on throughout the year too. Get ready for a host of new foodie openings, top-class attractions, a lorra live music and major sporting events happening in Liverpool in 2023. Oh, and we haven't even mentioned The Beatles yet!

Here are all the reasons why Liverpool is worthy of your full 12 points...

1. Because Liverpool is hosting Eurovision and then some!

615839-56.jpg.

A night time shot of Liverpool Arena lit up with the colour purple and the twinkling city skyline in the distance. An illuminated ferris wheel is located directly to the right of the arena.

The biggest annual European music extravaganza is heading to Liverpool from 9- 3 May, when the city hosts the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 . With nine shows in front of a live audience, fan zones and EuroFestival  – a cultural programme of events running alongside.

Just a few of the highlights from the programme include The Blue and Yellow Submarine Parade, where a psychedelic underwater sea disco (mirrorball jellyfish for the win!) will shimmy through the city to kickstart the Eurovision Party. And Rave Ukraine, a simultaneous live music event streamed worldwide from the dance floor of CONTENT in Liverpool and HVLV Bar ft Hangout in Kyiv.

If that wasn't enough, there are plenty of chances to get in on the action scouse-style. Here are just a few Eurovision events happening across the city:

  • Book tickets for the ultimate Eurovision party  at the iconic Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
  • Pop by the magnificent St George’s Hall for live screenings of Eurovision, guided tours, an ABBA tribute night and an organ recital of classic Eurovision hits.
  • Take your seat for the Eurovision Big Screen party at Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre . Tickets are £15 or £30 with dinner and a glass of fizz.
  • Join Funny Boyz, a Liverpool-based drag collective, for Eurovision-themed cabaret , bottomless brunches and late-night parties across the weekend.

2. Because there ain't no party like a 'pool party

Cavern club 600735-56_1.jpg.

A performer dressed in a Beatles-style costume plays guitar in the Cavern Club lit up with colourful lights

This year also sees a series of festivals and big music events, including Liverpool Sound City, which returns on 29-30 April with Masie Peters in the headline slot. Dancefloor worshippers should head to the Liverpool Disco Festival on 19 August for a very special 10th edition featuring headline acts and a some of the world's best disco and house DJs. You can also join a global party at the Liverpool International Music Festiva l . Expect big names in world music alongside up-and-coming local and international acts. Dates for this year are still to be confirmed, but previous headliners have included UB40 and De La Soul. From 23 to 29 August 2023, Liverpool welcomes fans from all over to celebrate the legacy of The Beatles at International Beatleweek with performances, musical tributes and much more.

3. Because there are some dead cool events in 2023

A tall colourful sculpture sits on the edge of the waterside in Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock as part of the Liverpool Biennial

For art lovers, June to September sees the 25th anniversary of the  Liverpool Biennial , the UK's largest contemporary visual arts festival. Another must-see is Return of the Gods , a dramatic exhibition telling the stories of famous heroes and villains through the lens of the ancient world, with plenty of myths and legends thrown in to keep you on your toes.

National Museums Liverpool  have announced an exciting programme of exhibitions for spring and summer 2023. Highlights include  Flower Fairies™ , an enchanting world of illustrations from the Flower Fairies books by Cicely Mary Barker.

4. Because live sport gets very lively in Liverpool

604325-56.jpg.

Red clouds above Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, at sunset

The Grand National  may be over for another year but there are plenty of other hotly-anticipated sporting events and attractions to book a ticket to throughout the year.  Liverpudlians love the beautiful game, and that's probably because the city is home to two footballing giants, Liverpool and Everton . Both teams have behind-the-scenes tours at their Anfield or Goodison Park stadiums and give you a glimpse into the backstage workings of the clubs. Depending on your allegiances, you can either walk through the players' tunnel to the sound of the famous Z Cars tune at Everton or get a photo in Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's Seat in the Anfield dugout. For golfing fans, The Royal Liverpool in Hoylake will host the Open for the 13th time from 16-23 July. Witness the world's best players battle it out on the links for the Champion Golfer of the Year title.

5. Because Liverpool's scran scene just got tastier

BoxPARK have announced the opening of their sixth site, and first BoxPARK outside London, in Liverpool in 2023. Opening in the Cains Brewery Village in the Baltic Triangle District, the warehouse building will feature 10 independent food operators, three internal bars, alfresco dining and entertainment.

For steak lovers, the choice in Liverpool is even more enticing this year. One of the UK's most renowned steak restaurants, Gaucho has opened in the former Bank of Liverpool Building and is the first restaurant in the city to exclusively serve carbon-neutral beef alongside Latin American dishes, a vegan menu and a sustainable drinks programme. Hawksmoor is also a must. It is ranked as one of the best steak restaurants in the world and is famous for its charcoal-grilled, 35-day dry-aged steaks, award-winning cocktails and spectacular interiors. Another recent opening is Alberts Schloss , with its roaring fires, tankards of Europe's finest bier and a 130-cover restaurant. Choose from alpine-style brunch, lunch or an evening meal with a generous side of live entertainment.

6. Because there's always something new to do

©eureka science + discovery.jpg.

A colourful interactive display with screens and models explaining how the lungs work

From dead cool hotels to adrenaline-fuelled attractions, this year sees even more reasons to visit due to a wave of exciting new openings. At the Radisson RED Liverpool , music, art, and architecture combine in a modern hotel setting. High-tech in design, it features a restored 19th-century stained glass window, an intriguing secret doorway and a grand staircase. It is perfectly positioned for Liverpool's museums, galleries, and live music venues. Gravity Active Entertainment features 100,000 square ft of fun, including multi-level e-karting, bowling, urban golf batting cages and live entertainment. It's a must for gamers and thrill seekers of all ages. Satisfy enquiring minds at Eureka! Science + Discovery . Located at Seacombe Ferry Terminal, this new interactive science and discovery centre is specially designed for children and young teens. It connects the everyday to the extraordinary with hundreds of hands-on activities and innovative experiences.

7. Because Liverpool is boss

Liverpool_pier_head_live_building_-_visitliverpool.jpg.

Four smiling friends walking outside the Royal Liver Building

Where else can you enjoy brunch at a heritage site , visit an attraction dedicated to the Titanic and then head off on a psychedelic bus tour  (with optional sing-along) to chart the lives of the world's most famous boy band? Speaking of the fab four, music has a special place in Liverpool, and you can feel the beat on every corner. It's the home of more number-one singles than any other UK city, and much of this is credited to The Beatles. Still, a wealth of musical talent has been born in the city, from heavyweights like Gerry & The Pacemakers and the Lightening Seeds to newer talent like Clean Cut Kid. The Beatles, of course, have their own place in Liverpool's history with attractions to visit, from The Beatles Story to the Casbah Coffee Club for unique tales and nostalgia. 2023 also sees some special scouse birthdays, including marking the 15th anniversary of Liverpool being named City of Culture. To cap that, March 2023 is the 60th anniversary of the Beatles debut album 'Please Please Me'. Could there be a better year to visit?

Eurovision 2023: how to plan a walking tour of Liverpool's musical hotspots

Ahead of the city hosting the 67th Eurovision Song Contest this May, we round up the top bars, venues and museums music-lovers shouldn't miss.

Bronze statues of The Beatles in front of buildings in Liverpool's city centre.

Liverpool has long marched to the beat of its own drum — this is the city that gave the world bands like The La’s, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Gerry and the Pacemakers and, undeniably its most famous progeny, The Beatles. In the late 1950s, as skiffle faded and rock ’n’ roll became more popular, the city blended several musical influences to birth the Merseybeat sound, a bouncy subgenre of rock ’n’ roll that took over the world thanks to the phenomenon of ‘The Fab Four’.

Today, Liverpool’s just as manic about music as ever. Live instruments sound from bars seven nights a week, there are several immersive museums dedicated to the city’s musical legacy and an international music festival attracts thousands of spectators each year.

So, when Ukraine won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022 and runner-up United Kingdom stepped in to host the following year, this British city was ready to face the music.

Join us as we go on a whistle-stop tour of the bars, attractions and venues that music lovers shouldn’t miss.

1.   The Cavern Club

For fans of The Beatles, there’s no better place to twist and shout than The Cavern Club — the iconic nightclub on Mathew Street where the famous foursome played 292 times between 1961-1963. Inside the basement venue, stone walls are decked out in music memorabilia, and numerous stages have in more recent times welcomed the likes of Adele, Arctic Monkeys and Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney, himself. There’s live music every night of the week, including an impressive Beatles tribute band who play on Fridays and Saturdays.

Performers on stage at The Cavern Club in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

2. British Music Experience

Walk five minutes towards Liverpool Waterfront to the Cunard Building, the grade II-listed structure designed to resemble the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. Inside is a melomaniac’s wildest dream: through music, costumes, special exhibitions and performances, this immersive museum tells the story of Britain as a musical powerhouse — from the British Invasion of the 1960s to the talent shows of the early noughties and the present day. Expect holographic performances by Boy George, a dance booth to practice iconic routines and a special studio for learning to play the guitar and drums.

3.   The Beatles Story

Ready to indulge in some more Beatlemania? Head further along the waterfront and step back in time at the Royal Albert Dock, an immersive museum depicting the chronicles of the band. To make the most of your visit, grab an audio guide and wind your way through the different rooms, which recreate Abbey Studios, The Casbah Club (the ‘birthplace of the Beatles’) and even a walk-through yellow submarine. The nostalgia doesn’t end there: on display are also Ringo Starr’s drum kit, handwritten song lyrics and John Lennon’s glasses that he wore while penning Imagine .

4.   Camp and Furnace

Stroll down Wapping towards the Baltic Triangle, Liverpool’s creative district where abandoned warehouses have been transformed into bars, restaurants and quirky event spaces. Here you’ll find the buzzy Camp and Furnace, a live music space set to host this year’s Euroclub — the official venue for Eurovision lovers to get together, party and debate who’ll be getting their douze points. For nine nights (Friday 5 to Saturday 13 May), it’ll host a series of events to celebrate this much-loved music contest, from a Eurovision-themed immersive bingo to a screening of the live shows.

5.   T he Jacaranda

From the Baltic Triangle, head back down towards the Ropewalks district to The Jacaranda; this historic, low-key pub is a must-see for fans of live music and the Merseybeat phenomenon. Situated on the bar-lined Slater Street, it was opened in 1958 by Allan Williams — the first manager of The Beatles — and stands as one of the first post-war coffee bars in Britain. It’s known for hosting performances by The Beatles during their very early days, but today, it's home to brilliant live music by local bands; a great menu of coffees, beers and cocktails and a fun vinyl bar/store.

Exterior view of the entrance of The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

6.   Royal Liverpool Philharmonic

Classical music fans should walk 10 minutes northeast to the Georgian neighbourhood and onto Hope Street to the art deco Liverpool Philharmonic. Originally built in 1840, but rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1933, it’s the proud home of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the UK’s oldest continuing symphony ensemble. There are around 400 shows and events each year, including performances and appearances by authors, comedians and classical artists. Head here on 13 May to watch the Eurovision final with a glass of Ukrainian-themed Buck's Fizz and dance the night away at the after party.

Did you know?

Liverpool became a UNESCO City of Music in 2015 — it’s one of only two cities in the UK (along with Glasgow) to have this coveted title.

READY FOR A NEW ADVENTURE? LET OUR VISITLIVERPOOL GUIDE SHOW YOU THE WAY

Liverpool Visitor Guide - Jan 2023

With the spectre of Christmas now behind us and the New Year well underway, now is a great time to start planning ahead, saving dates and making bookings, to help ensure you and your friends and family have the best year possible.

Gemma Sparkes, Digital Marketing Executive Marketing Liverpool

Gemma Sparkes, Digital Marketing Executive Marketing Liverpool

The latest VisitLiverpool guide has been beautifully designed to bring you a bite-sized but compressive round-up of all the great things happening in Liverpool from now until early summer 2023. .

We caught up with Marketing Liverpool’s Digital Marketing Executive, Gemma Sparkes , to find out more about the latest guide and get her take on the most exciting things heading your way.

Gemma, It’s another great, super-handy guide. What inspired this recent edition?

“There’s a real buzz in Liverpool right now. Not only in the office but out and about in the city itself. Being selected to host Eurovision 2023 in May seems to have really sparked something, so we tried to capture this feeling in our latest VisitLiverpool Guide.

“Just like Capital of Culture in 2008, we believe Eurovision could be a great catalyst, sparking broader interest in Liverpool as a visitor destination overall, so we’re keen to capitalise on this opportunity.

Which events particularly stand out for you this season?

“For me, what’s really special about this season is the sheer variety that Liverpool City Region offers. We always deliver on so many fronts. For sport we have The Grand National, in April and with Rugby League and Premiership Football Matches and golf tournaments.

“For art and culture, we have ‘The Turner Prize’ at Tate Liverpool and Liverpool Biennial, starting this summer. For music, alongside our epic plans for Eurovision, we also have our popular ‘On the Waterfront Event’ which will see the return of two of Liverpool’s home-grown heroes, Jamie Webster and leading international DJ, Camelphat.

“I also can’t wait for the return of Liverpool Sound City, the UK’s best festival for emerging music. The event is a great way to see lots of new bands and upcoming artists and to experience Liverpool musically, at a lot of different venues, which is always a highlight for me.”

Liverpool Visitor Guide Winter/Spring 2023

Liverpool Visitor Guide Winter/Spring 2023

Aside from events, what new additions are there to Liverpool’s visitor economy, which feature in the most recent visitor guide?

“National Museum Liverpool is presenting a whole array of exciting new exhibitions this season, including ‘Art of the Terraces’ and ‘Pure Brilliance – The Boodles Story’ with many of them free to attend. Of course there’s also an ever-expanding array of new restaurants to indulge in, including Nova Scotia, Street Pizza Gordon Ramsay, Scribble at MerseyMade.

“Our region has also now welcomed the opening of the ‘Eureka! Science + Discovery Centre’ on the Wirral, which takes visitors on a journey of discovery around the workings of the human body and the natural world and it’s very impressive. It’s a fantastic attraction for parents with children under 14, reframing how they see the world around them, making science and learning fun.”

Speaking of Liverpool’s Wirral borough. I particularly enjoyed reading about all the things you can do there.

“Yes. It’s part of on-going ‘spotlight’ series, where we focus on a particular borough of Liverpool. Wirral is just a short journey over the water and it’s so picturesque and full of things to do. There’s 22 miles of stunning coastline. 50 miles of beautiful walks. It’s home to New Brighton, a lovely seaside town full of heritage and charm.

“There’s also unique attractions like Port Sunlight and its stunning garden village, the Lady Lever Art Gallery and the Royal Liverpool Golf Course in Hoylake. We’re hoping more readers jump the ferry or catch a bus and explore more of Wirral this season. The Wirral is less than a 30-minute drive from Liverpool City Centre and it’s a real stand-out asset to the region.

VisitLiverpool Visitor Guide - Spotlight on Wirral.

VisitLiverpool Visitor Guide – Spotlight on Wirral.

How have you worked to adapt the VisitLiverpool guide for this season?

“We are very conscious about national and international concerns regarding the cost of living, so we adapted our Visitor Guide this year to include a list of 15 free things to do within the city region and people are also encouraged to check out our blog on VisitLiverpool.com for more money-saving things-to-do in Liverpool.

“This edition’s ‘Cosy Hidden Gems’ feature wraps-up a whole swathe of things that people may not initially thing of doing when they come to Liverpool.  This gave us a great opportunity to highlight and support a number of Liverpool City Region’s independent visitor economy businesses, which add to the special vibe and unique culture we have here.

Finally, where can people access the guide physically and digitally?

“As ever, people can access the latest Liverpool Visitor Guide digitally through the VisitLiverpool website

“There are also physical copies of Liverpool Visitor Guides distributed throughout the UK at selected locations and they are available across Liverpool City Region’s Tourist Information Centres.

“So, if you’re looking to get the most out of Liverpool in the first half 0f 2023; have more fun and feel more connected to our region’s vast and ever-changing tourism and leisure landscape, Liverpool City Region always has just the thing for you.

The 24 best things to do in Liverpool right now

From theatre and nightlife to art and architecture, here are all the best things to do in Liverpool

Sure, quite a lot of famous things to see and do in Liverpool have something to do with The Beatles. It would be pretty remiss if that weren’t so  – Liverpudlians are no where near fed up with Beatles tourism yet, after all . But there’s a shit ton of other great stuff worth checking out in this diverse, fun-loving city that has precisely nothing to do with the Fab Four.

To start with, there’s the rich architectural heritage, from the city’s two magnificent cathedrals to the historically significant Albert Dock and the Tate art gallery. Then you've got amazing theatres, museums, galleries, and on top of that? Excellent nightlife and food scenes. Well, there. You've got yourself a winner. Here are the best things to do in Liverpool right now.

What to do in Liverpool

Tate Liverpool

1.  Tate Liverpool

What is it?  The northern home of Britain’s famous Tate galleries.

Why go?  Formerly a warehouse, Tate Liverpool is now one of the most impressive art galleries in the UK. Take a trip to Albert Dock to see how James Stirling converted the historic building into a modern behemoth that makes an architectural virtue out of the building’s original features. Recent exhibitions include Keith Haring, Lucian Freud and Louise Bourgeois.

Sefton Park

2.  Sefton Park

What is it?  A green haven in the south of Liverpool.

Why go?  When city life gets a bit full-on, head to Sefton Park and enjoy 250 acres of beautiful green space. Granted Grade I-listed status (and well deserving of it), this urban oasis has hidden caves, waterfalls and a Victorian Palm House. Get house-plant inspiration in the Botanical Gardens and breathe a little easier on the bus ride home.

Shakespeare North Playhouse

3.  Shakespeare North Playhouse

What is it? A brand-new theatre and community hub inspired by the only sixteenth-century indoor playhouse in the UK outside of London. Why go?  It might not be the most centrally located theatre in the city, but it's worth the journey to Prescot for its excellent programme of plays by Shakespeare as well as contemporary theatre, comedy and other live events. Shakespeare North Playhouse represents a massive addition to Liverpool’s cultural scene, made all the more impressive by being outside the city centre.

FACT Liverpool

4.  FACT Liverpool

What is it? An independent culture hub, featuring cinemas and art galleries.

Why go? A pioneering creative space located just off of Bold Street, FACT has long championed independent talent, as well as offering a space for locals to explore and develop new ideas. Check out some of their free exhibitions, which often focus on digital art, or book yourself in for a film followed by a drink at the Picturehouse Bar, which often hosts cultural quizzes, themed nights and acoustic gigs too.

Liverpool Philharmonic

5.  Liverpool Philharmonic

What is it? The main venue in the city for classical orchestral performances as well as other types of music, from pop to folk. Why go? For starters, this is a hugely impressive concert hall, home to Liverpool’s very own orchestra, so if you’re into your classical music, there’s no better venue in the city. You can marvel at the architecture and the acoustics and enjoy the diverse programme, from Gustav Mahler to Martha Wainwright.

The Bluecoat

6.  The Bluecoat

What is it?  The oldest building in Liverpool city centre, this Grade I-listed former school is now a centre for contemporary arts with shops and a café. Why go?  Aside from the stunning building itself, the changing exhibitions in the excellent gallery spaces and a constantly inspiring events programme, Bluecoat is the base for a whole host of cool organisations like DaDa (Deaf and Disability Arts) and the Arabic Arts Festival. There’s always something interesting happening, in other words, and often in the centre’s glorious central courtyard. Plus, the café is one of very few places that do proper, thick wedges of toast dripping with butter.

The Beatles Story

7.  The Beatles Story

What is it? An immersive experience dedicated to Liverpool’s most famous quartet.

Why go? This award-winning homage to the Fab Four isn’t just for fans. Not only will you find out more than you’ll ever need to know about the band, you’ll get a taste of the swinging ’60s too, with r ecreations of The Casbah, Mathew Street and The Cavern Club, plus cabinets filled with one-off memorabilia and interactive areas. There’s also the largest selection of official Beatles merchandise in the world, should you fancy splashing out on a memento.

Liverpool Central Library

8.  Liverpool Central Library

What is it? The city's biggest library, featuring the Grade II listed Picton Reading Room.

Why go? Whether your interest lies in literature or architecture, the Liverpool Central Library , which features a stunning Victorian-era reading room, won't disappoint. The Picton Reading Room, which first opened in 1879, was the first ever electrically lit library in the United Kingdom and it's been well-preserved, so that you can spend a relaxed couple of hours there reading, or explore the archival and rare collections, which are also featured in glass cases in a part of the building known as the Hornby Library.

Radio City Tower

9.  Radio City Tower

What is it?  A bit like Seattle’s Space Needle, this pointy landmark has towered above the city since 1969.

Why go?  There are few places with better views of Liverpool than the observation deck of Radio City Tower. Officially known (but never referred to) as St John’s Beacon, this structure is 138 metres tall and its 360-degree panoramas are incredible. In case you hadn’t figured it out already, Radio City also broadcasts from here.

Mersey Ferry

10.  Mersey Ferry

What is it? A hop-on-hop-off ride along the Mersey.

Why go?  If Gerry And The Pacemakers thought it was worth singing about, it’s probably worth a ride. At the very least you’ll get good views of the city. Choose from a standard hop-on-hop-off cruise or a combination ticket that includes entrance to other Liverpool attractions, including the family-friendly interactive Spaceport attraction and the U-Boat Story, where you get to mooch around a genuine German submarine. In 2018 one of the riverboats was ‘dazzle painted’ by pop artist Sir Peter Blake to commemorate the centenary of the World War I Armistice.

Liverpool Cathedral

11.  Liverpool Cathedral

What is it?  A Gothic behemoth at the heart of the city.

Why go? Liverpool Cathedral is the largest religious building in Britain and the fifth-largest cathedral in the world. Built between 1904 and 1978, it’s now open to the public every day of the year. Here you can admire the world’s highest and widest Gothic arches, the UK’s largest organ and an array of stunning stained-glass windows. The cathedral also plays host to art exhibitions and charity dinners throughout the year, so it’s worth checking the website before your visit.

Shopping on Bold Street

12.  Shopping on Bold Street

What is it? Bold Street is Liverpool’s thriving independent shopping quarter.

Why go? Few places embody the creative spirit of Liverpool like Bold Street. This haven of independent businesses has long been held by locals and tourists alike as one of the city’s coolest areas. At once bougie and innovative, Bold Street is the place to head for one-off vintage pieces, second-hand books, vinyl or quirky homeware by local designers. Don’t forget to stop off at one of the many tempting cafés, bars and restaurants to refuel while you browse.

Museum of Liverpool

13.  Museum of Liverpool

What is it?  Well, you can probably guess. This museum is dedicated to Liverpool itself and is perched on the banks of the glistening Mersey.

Why go? From Liverpool’s unique geography to its rich history and vibrant culture, the Museum of Liverpool will tell you everything you need to know about this fabulous city. Just a short gallop away from RIBA North, the museum documents the importance of Liverpool in relation to the rest of the UK and the vital role the port has played throughout its history. Once inside, you’ll be bombarded with a host of Liverpool-centric things, including archaeological finds, the mythical liver birds, sporting paraphernalia and some (very) iconic tunes.

Merseyside Maritime Museum

14.  Merseyside Maritime Museum

What is it? A museum dedicated to Liverpool’s rich maritime history, appropriately based at Albert Dock.

Why go? No visit to Liverpool would be complete without a trip to this ode to the city’s sea-trading legacy – especially since it provides fun for all the family. First, there’s a load of model ships and full-sized vessels to examine, as well as eye-catching maritime paintings and posters, films and even a genuine lifejacket worn by a Titanic survivor. You’ll also find the rather harrowing International Slavery Museum on the third floor and the National Border Force Museum in the basement.

Beatles and sightseeing walking tour

15.  Beatles and sightseeing walking tour

What is it? A chance to get the skinny on the city from a local guide.

Why go? Your guide will have a wealth of local knowledge – including plenty of titbits on the Beatles. After all, a tour of Liverpool wouldn’t be complete without dipping into the story of the Fab Four, right? En route, explore the waterfront, learn about the historic docks and find out how the place has changed since John, Paul, George and Ringo made it big. Then you can take in a Beatles film and see loads of locations only accessible by foot, including the site of Brian Epstein’s record shop, NEMS, the Eleanor Rigby and Cilla Black statues, and the Cavern Club, where it all began.

Port Sunlight

16.  Port Sunlight

What is it? A picturesque village on The Wirral founded by William Hesketh Lever in 1888 as a place for ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory workers to live. Why go? Home to the magnificent Lady Lever Art Gallery, the entire village of Port Sunlight is a conservation area, where the original worker’s houses are Grade II-listed and set in some stunning parkland. It’s a perfect excursion for a sunny day, and you’ll need to take the ferry or go through the Mersey Tunnel from Liverpool to get to it.

The Cavern Club

17.  The Cavern Club

What is it?  The legendary nightclub that has played host to all manner of illustrious figures from Liverpudlian musical history.

Why go? This underground cellar started life in 1957 as a jazz and skiffle joint, before playing an instrumental role in the birth of the Beatles. Lennon and McCartney played here in the Quarrymen before forming the Fab Four and setting up for almost 300 gigs on its stage. Other major acts followed them, including the Hollies, Rolling Stones and the Kinks, before the venue was bulldozed in the early ’80s. Thanks to investment from Liverpool FC player Tommy Smith, the Cavern Club reopened in 1984 and is once again a vibrant live music venue. Visit now and you’ll either encounter one of the club’s resident acts – including a killer Beatles tribute – or an up-and-coming singer-songwriter.

The Baltic Triangle

18.  The Baltic Triangle

What is it? Start-ups, street food and stunning arts venues – you’ll find it all in this trendy area.

Why go?  Occupying an industrial district that was heavily bombed during World War II, the Baltic Triangle’s historic warehouses now overflow with music venues, arts spaces and independent boutiques. Don’t miss the Baltic Market, a street-food haven inside the striking Cains Brewery building. Expect things like halloumi fries, prosecco ice lollies and Neapolitan fried pizzas.

The Royal Liver Building Clocktower Tour

19.  The Royal Liver Building Clocktower Tour

What is it? An office block, but not any old office block.

Why go? Built between 1908 and 1911, the Grade I-listed Royal Liver Building (that’s ‘liver’ to rhyme with ‘diver’) is one of the sights that earned Liverpool its Unesco World Heritage status. It was designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas for an insurance company and was one of the first structures in the world to be built using reinforced concrete. Its most notable features are its two clock towers, on top of which perch two mythical, cormorant-like liver birds. A tour of the clocktower offers superb views from what is the city’s most famous landmark.

British Music Experience

20.  British Music Experience

What is it? An exhibition that tells the story of British pop music.

Why go? In this sprawling, vibrant and interactive exhibition, visitors can find out just about everything there is to know about pop music in the UK. Highlights? Genuine outfits worn by stars such as David Bowie, as well as instruments that once belonged to Noel Gallagher and the Sex Pistols. You can also have a go at rock stardom yourself by picking up one of various guitars, drum kits and keyboards, or belting out a tune or two in a vocal booth.

Love Lane Brewery Tour

21.  Love Lane Brewery Tour

What is it? A look inside the Baltic Triangle-based brewery, with an optional beer and gin tasting.

Why go? Looking for a boozy way to spend the afternoon? Tour the breweries of Love Lane based in an old rubber warehouse at the centre of Liverpool's Baltic Triangle, while sampling local, fresh beer. If beer isn't your thing, you can also tour their gin distilleries and settle in for a tasting of their Ginsmiths of Liverpool gin. With a delicious food menu featuring chicken wings and dirty fries, it's a great spot to line your stomach too.

Vintage Shopping at 69A

22.  Vintage Shopping at 69A

What is it?  A treasure trove of vintage items, antiques and bric-a-brac. Why go? Remember as a kid when you hoped that wardrobes and doorways in garden walls might lead to some magical place? Welcome to 69A, the closest Liverpool has to that. Step inside and you’re transported into an emporium where you might come across a small toy reminding you of your childhood for just a few quid, a first edition you’ll need to take a loan out to buy or some vintage clothing you just have to have. You can get lost in here for hours.

23.  Pins Social Club

What is it? A bowling alley with a rooftop bar, as well as ping pong, shuffle boards and live music.

Why go? If you're trying to find a place that will please everyone, you can't go wrong with PINS . It's one of the best nights out in the city, with a huge rooftop which is a great place to soak up the sun in the summer, and transformed into an Alpine Village during the winter. Inside, there's plenty to keep you occupied, with impressive bowling alleys and ping pong tables. There's also an array of live music and DJs playing until 2am at the weekend.

The M&S Bank Arena

24.  The M&S Bank Arena

What is it?  A 11,000-capacity arts and sports venue that opened in 2008.

Why go? Those seeking an action-packed outing should check out the M&S Bank Arena, which regularly plays host to massive gigs, live sporting events, comedy shows and family-friendly performances. Sir Paul McCartney has graced the arena’s stage, and so too have Beyoncé and Iron Maiden. They’ve also held the Mobo Awards and the Davis Cup here, as well as telly favourites ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and ‘The X Factor’. And in 2023, the venue is playing host to actual Eurovision. Plenty of strings to its bow, then.

Visiting Liverpool’s BEST Attractions in 24hrs | How to Spend One Day in Liverpool in 2023 | UK

Liverpool is a vibrant city located in the North West of England, best known for its rich history, iconic landmarks, and... the Beatles! With a population of around 500,000, Liverpool is the sixth-largest city in the UK, and one that is definitely deserving of a visit.

Liverpool's history dates back to the 13th century, with the city's port playing a crucial role in the slave trade and the Industrial Revolution. Today, visitors can explore Liverpool's maritime past at the Merseyside Maritime Museum , which showcases the city's seafaring heritage through interactive exhibits and artifacts. Nearby, visitors can learn about the city's dark past and hear harrowing true stories from enslaved people at the International Slavery Museum . Both are conveniently located on the Royal Albert Dock (more on this soon!)

Liverpool's Royal Alert Dock area showing red brick warehouses, and boats on the water. Liverpool, UK

Liverpool is also renowned for its thriving arts and culture scene. The city is home to numerous museums and galleries, including the Tate Liverpool , which features art exhibitions from around the world. For music lovers, Liverpool is of course the birthplace of the Beatles. Visitors can even step inside the famous Cavern Club where the band regularly performed in the 1960s.

Beyond its cultural and historical offerings, Liverpool is also a top destination for sports enthusiasts. The city is home to one of the most successful football clubs in the UK, Liverpool F.C. Those interested in touring Anfield Stadium (home of Liverpool F.C.) can purchase tickets below.

In recent years, Liverpool has undergone significant regeneration, with new developments such as the Liverpool ONE shopping complex and the waterfront district attracting visitors from around the world.

In this blog post we'll explore the best things to do in Liverpool for travellers who are short on time, and provide the estimated time needed for each location. With careful planning, you should be able to fit the below activities (and maybe even a couple more) into one day in Liverpool.

Let's get started!

Explore the Royal Albert Dock area

Liverpool's Royal Albert Dock (often simply referred to as Albert Dock or the Docks) is a historic and iconic landmark that was officially opened in 1846. It was designed by architect Jesse Hartley and engineer Philip Hardwick, and served as a major hub for shipping and trade in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The docks were named after Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, who opened them officially.

De Wadden: A three-masted auxiliary schooner, built in 1917, located on Albert Dock, Liverpool UK

The docks were a significant development in Liverpool's history, as they allowed ships to dock directly at the heart of the city. The warehouses surrounding the docks were used to store goods such as cotton, tobacco, and sugar, which were then transported from Liverpool to all over the world. The docks were a bustling hub of activity back in the day, with cranes and wagons constantly moving goods between ships and warehouses.

In the 1970s the docks fell into disuse, and many of the warehouses were left abandoned. Thankfully the area underwent significant regeneration in the 1980s, and the Albert Dock was transformed into the thriving tourist destination that it is today. The warehouses are now home to museums, galleries, shops, restaurants, and bars, and the area hosts many cultural and community events throughout the year.

You can probably see why Royal Albert Docks is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Visitors can take a stroll along the waterfront, enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants, or visit one of the many attractions, such as the Tate Liverpool, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, or the Beatles Story .

Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, UK

Estimated time needed to explore Liverpool's Albert Docks: 1.5-2hrs, more if entering a museum, or stopping for lunch.

Enjoy lunch or dinner at Royal Albert Dock

As mentioned above, there are plenty of restaurants for visitors to explore in the Albert Dock area of Liverpool. The style of food and price of drinks and meals varies greatly from restaurant to restaurant, so it's a good idea to take a look at Google Maps for the latest menu, or to ask to see a menu before being seated. During the busy season, customers may need to make a reservation for popular restaurants.

How long you spend at a restaurant or cafe entirely depends on whether you like to eat quickly or enjoy a long meal, so I've omitted the estimated time for food and drinks in this post.

Let's take a look at some of the food on offer at Royal Albert Dock.

The Smuggler's Cove Bar & Restaurant

The Smuggler's Cove Bar & Restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, however I suggest sitting inside toward the front of the restaurant to enjoy the interesting décor and the beautiful view of Albert Dock.

Roly's Fudge Pantry

Roly's Fudge Pantry isn't unique to Liverpool, as it's originally from Devon in the UK, however, what makes Roly's Fudge Pantry special (and why I've decided to include it) is that each store is independently owned and cooks up fresh fudge using traditional recipes every day.

The fudge is available in lots of flavours, and is smooth and silky, and not at all grainy. There are no artificial colorings, flavorings or additives used. It makes for a great little sweet treat, and also a good souvenir. You can buy individual fudge pieces sold by weight, or in pre-packaged bags.

Check out an exhibition at the Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool entrance on Albert Dock, Liverpool UK

Tate Liverpool is one of the four Tate galleries in the UK, renowned for its small but impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. The museum has been a cultural hub of Liverpool since its establishment in 1988, and attracts thousands of visitors to its collections and exhibitions every year.

The museum is housed in a converted warehouse on the Royal Albert Dock, a site that was once a bustling hub of Liverpool's maritime industry. This location provides a unique backdrop for the museum's vast collection of artwork, which ranges from painting and sculpture to photography and installation art.

One of the standout features of Tate Liverpool is its commitment to showcasing the work of local and regional artists in addition to international artists. The museum's exhibitions are often designed to spark conversations and engage visitors in critical dialogue about contemporary issues.

As well as the permanent collection and rotating exhibitions, Tate Liverpool offers a wide range of events and educational programs for visitors of all ages. From artist talks and workshops to film screenings and family-friendly activities, there is always something exciting happening at the museum. Visitors can check out the museum's website to see what exhibitions and activities are available on the day of their visit.

When I visited in February I was able to enjoy the free collection, in addition to the JMW Turner exhibition (on display until June 4, 2023). Current collections and exhibitions can be found on Tate Liverpool's website .

A few photos from the JMW Turner exhibition at the Tate Liverpool.

Overall, the Tate Liverpool is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in modern and contemporary art. With its stunning location and impressive collection it really is a cultural gem in the heart of Liverpool, and one I'd recommend to all art lovers.

For travellers looking for a museum with a stronger focus on Liverpool, the Museum of Liverpool may be a better option.

Explore the Beatles' very own Liverpool on the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour

The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour in Liverpool is a must-see attraction for any die-hard Beatles fan. This tour is an immersive experience that takes visitors on a journey through the band's history in Liverpool.

The tour begins at the easy to find bus stop in Albert Dock, opposite the ticket booth where reserved tickets can be picked up. From there, the tour bus takes guests to the birthplace of George Harrison, and the last known house in Liverpool that belonged to Paul McCartney. The tour will briefly stop at both for photo opportunities. Please note that these homes can not be entered during the tour. The tour also includes stops at famous Liverpool landmarks, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.

The last known house to have belonged to Sir Paul McCartney in Liverpool on Forthlin Road.

As the bus winds it's way around the streets of Liverpool, the tour host will entertain you with band history and lesser-known stories about the members of the Beatles.

The tour does not stop at every Beatle's related attraction, although many more locations such as schools attended by the Beatles members and locations mentioned in songs will be pointed out through the window of the bus when passing by.

The final stop of the tour is a visit to The Cavern Club, where the Beatles played close to 300 times between 1961 and 1963. The club has been restored to look exactly as it did in the 1960s and still hosts live music performances today.

The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour is a fun and informative way to learn about the band's history in Liverpool, and it's a convenient way to see some of the places that inspired what many consider to be the greatest music of all time.

Those who just can't get enough of the Beatles should visit The Beatles Story Exhibition/Museum located at Royal Albert Dock, not far from where the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour begins.

Estimated time needed for the Magical Mystery Tour in Liverpool: The tour runs for 2hrs, excluding time spent at the Cavern Club. Tour guests are free to explore the Cavern Club for as long or as little as they wish at the end of the tour.

Enjoy the music at the world-famous Cavern Club

The Cavern Club is a legendary music venue located in the heart of the city. It first opened its doors in 1957 and quickly became a focal point for the up and coming rock and roll scene of the 1960s.

The club is located on Mathew Street, in the city center, and is housed underground. Despite its small size and somewhat cramped conditions, The Cavern Club has remained a popular destination for music lovers and tourists alike. The venue hosts a variety of live music events, ranging from rock and roll to punk and pop, and has played host to many well-known artists over the years. Some of the most famous musicians to grace the Cavern Club stage include Elton John, Oasis and Adele.

The Cavern Club not only serves as a live music venue, but also as a music museum of sorts. The venue has signed posters and photos on the walls from bands and musicians that have played there throughout the years. There are also guitars, drum kits, and other music related paraphernalia on display from some of the bands and artists who have performed at The Cavern Club over the years.

Today, The Cavern Club remains an important part of Liverpool's important cultural heritage, attracting visitors from around the world who come to experience the history and atmosphere of this iconic music venue. It's a must-visit destination for all music lovers and definitely a must-see attraction during your stay in Liverpool.

Estimated time needed for the Cavern Club: Around 1hr, or longer if you're having a good time! I recommend browsing the items on display, and then enjoying the live music with a drink or two.

Pose with the Liverpool sign

The Liverpool sign is located in a public space across from the Albert Docks. It's a great place to pose for a photo which will serve as a great memory of your time in Liverpool.

Estimated time needed at the Liverpool sign: 5-15mins depending on crowds.

End your day with something sweet from Heavenly Desserts

Heavenly Desserts is a cafe focused on all things sweet, guaranteed to have something to satisfy every sweet tooth. The menu is extensive, and includes anything and everything from ice-cream to cakes and croffles. Those who are overwhelmed by the menu can ask the staff for some recommendations, however the store has also included a handy popular item indicator on the menu.

I enjoyed the ruby and white chocolate croffles (croissant x waffle), although I did find the dish to be a little too sweet.

The most convenient area to stay in Liverpool

The hotel I stayed at during my 24 hours in Liverpool was the super convenient Heywood House Hotel , located around five minutes walk from Albert Dock. For travellers hoping to explore Liverpool in a short amount of time, I can't recommend the location of this hotel enough. Being within walking distance of Royal Albert Dock makes it easy to see some of the best things Liverpool has to offer, without having to worry about dealing with public transport. In fact, all of the locations mentioned in this blog post were easily reached on foot from Heywood House Hotel.

Heywood House Hotel is also conveniently located within a couple of minutes walk from James Street station, which is useful for people travelling to or from Liverpool via Liverpool Lime Street station. The trip from James Street station to Liverpool Lime Street station is only two stops and takes around five minutes.

I can't stress enough the importance of staying in a convenient location if you're only spending 24 hours in Liverpool (or any other city!) A conveniently located hotel means there's no time wasted on public transport, money spent on Ubers, and you won't need to walk kilometers to get to the main sights.

Final Thoughts about my 24 hours in Liverpool

Liverpool is a great city to visit in the UK for those who are interested in music and history. There are many things for tourists to enjoy in the Albert Dock area including but not limited to museums and restaurants. In addition there are lots of Beatles related locations scattered around Liverpool for Beatles fans to enjoy. Be sure to book your train ticket in advance if you plan to travel to and from Liverpool by train to avoid missing out on a seat.

In my opinion, one day in Liverpool is definitely enough time to see the main sights, however, if you wish to dive deeper into the city and explore some lesser-known attractions and hidden gems , you may wish to spend two days in Liverpool instead.

Liverpool Visitor Guide 2024: Everything you need to know

Liverpool, UK

Liverpool is one of the UK’s most important cities. Located in the northwest of England only 35 miles from Manchester, Liverpool was in many ways the major port of the Industrial Revolution that began in Manchester. Even to this day, the two cities carry on a sporting rivalry that goes back over a century.

As one of the most significant ports in the UK, Liverpool has a long history of immigration and maritime activity. The city was once referred to as East Dublin because of the huge numbers of Irish immigrants that came to the UK through Liverpool. Of course, it is also known as the World Capital of Pop due to the many musical acts that have formed in the city, including the Beatles.

With the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the UK, modern Liverpool is a big and bustling city full of great places to visit and fascinating things to do. Drop off your bags at a Liverpool luggage storage service and experience what the city has to offer.

A weekend in Liverpool

A weekend in Liverpool is enough to see some of the city's top attractions. Whether you're interested in industrial history, the story of immigration, or the sporting culture of the modern UK, you'll find it here.

  • Explore the industrial history of the city at the Albert Dock. Established in 1964, this dock was once one of the most advanced in the world. Shipping made Liverpool's fortune during the Industrial Revolution, and the dock is the best place to see the ongoing legacy of that chapter of history. However, it's also a great place to eat and drink in one of the many pubs and restaurants that have sprung up in the old warehouse buildings.
  • Explore Liverpool's history as a center of immigration at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. This museum tells the story of Liverpool's history as a center of international shipping, its role in the slave trade, and its history as the first port of call for immigrants from around the world, especially Ireland.
  • Liverpool is home to two soccer teams that play in the top level of the sport in England. In particular, Liverpool FC are the most decorated team in English sporting history and are known for having perhaps the most passionate fans in the country. Visiting their home stadium, Anfield, during a game is an unforgettable experience.

Liverpool lockers

Liverpool is the kind of city where the deeper you look, the more you'll find to explore. You can make things much easier on yourself by dropping off your unneeded bags at a luggage locker in Liverpool. Traveling light will make it easier for you to see more of the attractions you want. Knowing your bags are safely looked after will set your mind at ease.

Off the beaten path in Liverpool

Liverpool has always been and remains a working city. As a result, some of its best attractions are not that well known. It’s not hard to escape the tourist crowds and see a lesser-known side of the city. Drop off your bags at a Liverpool suitcase storage and explore these hidden gems.

  • Travel beneath the city in the Williamson tunnels. Built in the 19th century by a wealthy Liverpool merchant, the purpose of these tunnels is unknown. The full network of tunnels has still to be fully explored, but you can see some of the most impressive parts on a guided tour of this unusual attraction.
  • The church of Saint Luke in Liverpool was built in the 1800s, but its Gothic revival architecture makes it look far older. Liverpool was heavily bombed during the war, and the church was badly damaged. It has been maintained in its ruined state as a memorial to those who died during the blitz. It makes an atmospheric place to wander and take stunning photographs.
  • The pavement outside the main entrance of Liverpool Central Library is emblazoned with the names of famous books from around the world. But if you look carefully, you'll notice that some of the letters are colored red instead of the more common white. The red letters form a clue to a riddle, and the solution has never been officially revealed. See if you can crack the code for yourself.

Liverpool, UK

What to do alone in Liverpool

Liverpool is a great city to explore by yourself. The central part of town is very safe, and the locals are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Traveling alone lets you immerse yourself more fully in this unique city. Drop off your unneeded possessions at a Liverpool bag storage and start exploring by yourself.

  • One of Liverpool's biggest museums, the World Museum has exhibits on just about everything. There's an aquarium, a planetarium, and a huge variety of historical artifacts. Visiting this popular Museum is like a crash course not only in the history of Liverpool but in that of the world.
  • Liverpool's Chinatown is the oldest in Europe. Its impressive gate is the largest anywhere outside of China, and the busy streets and unique stores make it feel like you've stepped into another world. Of course, this is also one of the best places in the city to eat, so check out any of the many great Chinese restaurants in the area.
  • For many music fans, Liverpool will always be best known as the home of the Beatles. The city embraces its most famous sons at The Beatles Story, an exhibition that tells the story of the Fab Four's glittering career and their wide influence on popular culture.

The best souvenirs in Liverpool

If you visit Liverpool's modern sporting cathedral, Anfield, make sure to pick up some Liverpool FC branded memorabilia, such as a scarf or replica jersey. Or if you're looking to celebrate the musical heritage of the city, you can't do much better than a Beatles record purchased in Liverpool. For something a little more unusual, pick up a miniature lambanana at the Liverpool Museum gift shop. These unique items are replicas of a famous statue in the center of Liverpool, the Superlambanana, made to warn about the dangers of genetic engineering.

Liverpool complete Ryan Gravenberch signing from Bayern Munich

MUNICH, GERMANY - AUGUST 27: Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Muenchen gestures during the Bundesliga match between FC Bayern München and FC Augsburg at Allianz Arena on August 27, 2023 in Munich, Germany. (Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images)

Liverpool have completed the signing of Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich for around €40 million (£34 million).

The Netherlands international signed a five-year contract after arriving on Merseyside and passing his medical on Friday.

Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Gravenberch has been well documented and The Athletic reported on Wednesday that they had opened negotiations with the Bundesliga club.

“I’m very happy that the deal is done and I’m finally here,” Gravenberch, who will wear No 38, told Liverpoolfc.com upon his signing.

“If you see it from the outside, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. Also the fans, the stadium, I think everything from the outside is top. So that’s why (it was the right club).”

The 21-year-old only joined Bayern from Ajax last summer but was keen to leave the German champions in search of regular first-team football having only started three league matches in 2022-23.

Jurgen Klopp regards Gravenberch as the perfect final addition to an extensive midfield rebuild this summer.

Jordan Henderson , Fabinho , James Milner , Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all left the club with the squad previously bolstered by the signings of Alexis Mac Allister , Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo .

Like Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, Gravenberch is viewed as a multi-functional midfielder who offers tactical flexibility due to his ability to play in both the No 8 and No 6 roles.

He is a product of the Ajax academy, making 103 appearances for the club in all competitions and scoring 12 goals before his €25 million move to Bayern in 2022.

What would Gravenberch bring to Liverpool’s midfield?

Analysis from Andy Jones

visit liverpool 2023

Gravenberch has the versatility to play as a No 6 at the base of midfield or as a No 8. For Ajax, he largely played on the left side of a double pivot, but he is also comfortable operating on the left of a midfield three in more advanced areas.

One of Gravenberch’s stand-out attributes is his ability to carry the ball and advance his team up the pitch (carry and dribble volume: 92 out of 99).

His large strides, matched with his excellent close control, allow him to drive past opponents. He is happy to receive possession and his physicality, helped by his 6ft3 (190cm) height allows him to accelerate away from players. Notably, he was still very good at retaining possession (ball retention: 73 out of 99).

Gravenberch can draw players towards him and commit them with driving runs. Such play could be a beneficial attribute for Liverpool when facing a compact defensive block.

When Liverpool’s summer 2023 window is done and dusted, they may not have addressed all of their issues within the squad. However, despite not getting all of their primary targets, by getting Gravenberch over the line few can argue that they will not have improved their midfield options with youth, experience and availability.

In June 2023, Qantas will begin running non-stop flights from New York City to Auckland.

Widely praised for its containment of COVID-19, New Zealand held out until September of this year to finally eliminate travel restrictions introduced during the pandemic. Needless to say, the island nation is mightily gearing up for the throngs of foreign visitors anticipated in the coming year, especially in the city of Auckland .

Air connectivity with the U.S. has never been stronger. Nonstop flights are currently running from six American cities; the world’s fourth-longest leg, Air New Zealand’s nearly-17-hour flagship from New York City, debuted in September. Australian carrier Qantas has also announced its own direct flight to New York City, coming in June 2023.

Meanwhile, Auckland’s jam-packed events calendar seems to be making up for lost time. After a three-year hiatus, the popular Lantern Festival will be held in February 2023 to celebrate Chinese New Year. Pasifika , the largest Pacific Island cultural festival in the world, is returning in March 2023 after a two-year pause. And, in July, the quadrennial FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will swing down under to nine host cities across New Zealand and Australia, with Auckland’s games held in Eden Park.

Aside from Auckland’s newest attractions that outsiders have yet to experience—like the $350M eco-sensitive Te Wānanga waterfront development on Quay Street—three years’ worth of flashy hotel openings also await. There’s the Park Hyatt , QT Auckland , the charming Hotel Fitzroy , and Hotel Britomart , New Zealand’s only 5-Green-Star certified hotel. Stays in the city pair perfectly with newcomers in Auckland’s rural periphery, like the Scandi-inspired Parohe Island Retreat and golf-centric Te Arai . Should you journey further into Aotearoa, new multi-day tours by luxury rail operator Great Journeys depart from Auckland Rail Station. From the looks of it, 2023 will—finally—give Auckland its time to shine. —Paul Jebara

Go for: New Indigenous-led experiences and wilderness lodges

The newly opened Klahoose Wilderness Resort invites guests to learn about Klahoose First Nation Culture—and experience...

The newly opened Klahoose Wilderness Resort invites guests to learn about Klahoose First Nation Culture—and experience fantastic wildlife viewing—in British Columbia's remote Desolation Sound.

The province of British Columbia is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, from the Rockies to the storm-battered islands of Haida Gwaii , and new Indigenous-led experiences are connecting travelers to the cultures most closely tied to the land. At Haida-owned and -operated Haida House —which launched its new longhouse-style oceanfront cabins in May 2022—guests will explore Haida Gwaii while learning about the Haida worldview of Yah’guudang, meaning “respect for all living things and the interdependence that binds us.” Haida House guests will visit the islands’ ancestral village sites—including The Village of Queen Charlotte, which was recently restored to its Indigenous name of Daajing Giids, in an unprecedented move.

Further east, in the interior Chilcotin region of B.C., Indigenous-owned and -operated Nemiah Valley Lodge will open for its first full season next June. The lodge marks the first tourism venture on Tsilhqot’in title lands after a landmark ruling awarded the First Nation rights to their traditional territory. In 2023, they’re adding a sweat lodge experience and kayaking on Chilko Lake—Canada’s highest-elevation freshwater lake—led by Tsilhqot’in cultural ambassadors from the local Xeni Gwet’in community.

Back on the coast, Klahoose Wilderness Resort is also new on the scene, with a focus on Klahoose First Nation culture and wildlife viewing in remote Desolation Sound. There’s also Tofino Wilderness Resort  in Quait Bay on Vancouver Island , which will open under Ahousaht First Nation ownership in 2023. But Indigenous culture will also make its mark in the bustling heart of British Columbia: Salmon n’ Bannock , Vancouver’s only Indigenous restaurant, is opening Salmon n’ Bannock on the Fly at the Vancouver airport, the first Indigenous restaurant in a Canadian airport—and a welcome way to bookend a trip to the region. —Chloe Berge

Central California Coast, U.S.A.

Go for: New wine country stays, standout tasting rooms and restaurants

New accommodations like The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection, are making the central California coast one of the state's hippest food-and-wine-focused getaways—and there's even more to come in 2023.

A patchwork of laid-back beach towns , trail-laced redwood forests, and vineyards producing standout Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, the Central Coast has been on our radar for a while now. Yet, all at once, it seems the region’s lesser-known destinations are taking on cooler second lives. In the Santa Ynez Valley , cowboy towns like Los Alamos and Los Olivos float on the same intriguing whispers that Joshua Tree did a decade ago (known, but not too known). The valley has emerged as the hippest new getaway for Angelinos, with its mix of funky tasting rooms like disco ball-decorated Future Perfect Wines , casually chic restaurants such as seafood tavern Bar Le Côte , and new accommodations, most notably the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern . Auberge Resorts Collection recently resurrected the latter, a beloved 19 th century landmark with a cabana-lined pool, a spa curated by New York City’s cult outfit The Well , and four restaurants, including a smokehouse that juxtaposes open-fire cooking and Shanghainese flavors. One hour north, Paso Robles , has finally shed its serious oenophiles-only image. Tin City , an approachable collection of wineries and breweries set within an industrial market, feels reminiscent of Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone , and boasts San Luis Obispo County’s only Michelin-decorated restaurant, Six Test Kitchen . Next year, the revival whizzes at Nomada Group will reopen two historic hotels—Farmhouse Motel, a 1940s spot downtown, and River Lodge, set at the entrance of Route 46 minutes from top wineries. They’ve even made the unassuming frontier town of Pozo, 30 minutes from downtown, Insta-cool by recently reviving the Saloon , where Willie Nelson once played, and adding airstreams and glamping tents as crash pads. —Jen Murphy

Go for: One-of-a-kind archaeological museums, waterfront resorts, cruises

The much-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, pegged to be the world's largest archaeological museum, is set to finally open in 2023 with all objects excavated from Tutankhamun’s tomb.

A far more hopeful period is afoot in Egypt after a decade of upheaval catalyzed by the Arab Spring. This year marked the centennial of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb—and in November 2022, Egypt hosted the United Nations Climate Summit, COP 27.

Long-laid plans will finally come to fruition in the year ahead, with many high-profile projects, including the much-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, set to open at last. Pegged to be the world’s largest archaeological museum, the space—slated for a 2023 opening—will contain priceless items, including all objects excavated from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Further touristic draws, Egyptology-wise, stem from the exciting return of certain artifacts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art , as well as the relocation of the nation’s vast collection of royal mummies to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo .

Grander transformations are afoot, with new infrastructure—and a new capital—rapidly taking shape. A development not without its controversies, Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, to the east of Cairo, will replace the current one as the country's governmental center, boasting Africa’s tallest tower and the 22-mile-long Green River Park, designed to look like the Nile River . On that note: Viking River Cruises have expanded their fleet yet again, with the Viking Aton due to launch in August 2023, sailing their popular  Pharaohs & Pyramids  itinerary. Meanwhile, the opening of eco-resort The Chedi El Gouna on the Red Sea is penciled in for December 2022—yet another reason for a multi-stop journey through Egypt. —Gilly Hopper

Perched atop a hill and surrounded by olive groves and orchards, the Pereh Mountain Resort underscores why Galilee has earned its nickname as the Tuscany of Israel.

For decades, food and wine aficionados from Tel Aviv have been making the windy drive north to Israel’s Galilee region, where the landscape unfolds into lush green hills and valleys. For locals, this fertile corner filled with fruit farms, organic dairies, and family-run wineries, has long been revered as Israel’s own Tuscany.

And now, international tourists are discovering the region’s bounty as well: A flurry of new boutique hotels have opened over the past year, including the Pereh Mountain Resort , perched atop a hill and surrounded by olive groves and orchards; and the Galei Kinneret , reborn with a kitchen led by celebrity chef Assaf Granit. At The Farmhouse , which also opened in 2021, guests sleep among vineyards, and after Watsu pool therapy and jeep tours, are invited to pair local wines with artisanal cheeses and local produce. Tiberias, the Galilee’s largest city, is also set for a facelift with a new promenade along the same shores where Jesus is said to have walked on water—and new direct flights to Israel from Atlanta (Delta; starting in May) and Miami (American; beginning in October) will make access in 2023 easier than ever. —Debra Kamin

Go for: City hotspots, island getaways, and dazzling safari lodges

Take advantage of new openings in Nairobi and the Lamu archipelago, then check in to Angama Amboseli, a new lodge in Amboseli National Park opening in November 2023.

Kenya has long been a big draw for safari travelers, but there’s much more to see beyond the Masai Mara—and there are compelling new reasons to crisscross the country. While Nairobi was often relegated to one-night layovers en route to the bush, innovative new hotel concepts like The Social House Nairobi , which opened just before the pandemic, are beckoning visitors to linger awhile. The 83 sleek rooms are brimming with local products, like Kenyan coffee and toiletries, and the four restaurants and café are hot spots for Nairobi’s creative set to converge. Nairobi’s restaurant scene is also thriving, with creative kitchens like the farm-to-table Cultiva , the brainchild of Ecuadorian chef Ariel Moscardi, who fell in love with Nairobi during a short visit; he’s now at work on an experimental chef’s-table offshoot called Aya set to open next year. Plus, on the heels of opening her home to guests as the art-filled Eden Nairobi in 2021, designer Anna Trzebinski has now set her sights on the coast. She’s taken over three apartments in the beguiling island archipelago of Lamu , filled them with furniture and decor she designed, and will unveil them as Jannah Shela in 2023. With gorgeous indoor-outdoor spaces and a rooftop bar with the best views in Lamu, this is a chic hideaway for a new wave of travelers—both Kenyan and international. For those who can’t get enough of Angama Mara ’s dazzling details, the November 2023 opening of Angama Amboseli brings its contemporary African design to Amboseli National Park further south, where 10 tented suites come with sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro . — Sarah Khan

Gatronomic getaways like Fleur de Loire, opened last July, are proving that the Loire Valley has more to offer than historical châteaux (though there are plenty of those).

Fleur de Loire from Michelin-star chef Christophe Hay has two restaurants, a pastry shop, and a 2.5-acre garden from which his ingredients are sourced.

The Loire Valley has always banked on its abundance of royal châteaux and lush landscapes to draw in travelers. But it wasn’t until very recently, thanks to the initiative of hoteliers, creatives, and chefs, that the region sought to go beyond its picturesque historical marvels to establish new reasons to visit.

That effort began in 2020, with the gastronomic and nature-inspired getaways offered at Loire Valley Lodges and Les Sources de Cheverny , and has shown no signs of stopping. Raising the bar in a big way has been Fleur de Loire , double Michelin-star chef Christophe Hay’s fine-dining-led hotel in Blois, overlooking the Loire River, which opened last July. Hay restored a former 17th-century hospice to set up two restaurants, a pastry shop, a Sisley spa, 44 elegantly appointed rooms, and a 2.5-acre garden which supplies all of the produce for his cooking.

Yet there is also novelty for those who can’t shake the urge to sleep within the majestic confines of a castle. The Château Louise de La Vallière is a new 5-star Relais & Châteaux offering in forestland tucked between Tours and Amboise, open as of October 2022. Occupying a 16th-century château set within a 47-acre park that served as the first holiday residence of Louise de la Vallière, the first official mistress of Louis XIV, the 20-room property has been restored and redesigned by Jacques Garcia to its centuries-old glory: it approximates the style and customs of the era, down to the period dress sported by staff, in addition to original paintings, tapestries, decorative pieces, and even mealtime rituals.

It makes for a suitable home base to visit the Royal Château of Amboise in 2023 when the Saint-Hubert chapel, the resting place of Leonardo De Vinci, reopens after nearly two years of renovations. The Château will also host a new, year-long exhibition dedicated to Louis XI on the 600th anniversary of his birth.

But the newest way to make a stopover arrives next summer with the inaugural Le Grand Tour experience from Puy du Fou. The six-day luxury train journey spans a more than 2,000-mile tour of France in a Belle Epoque carriage, bringing guests to Chenonceau for a night, with private visits to the namesake château. —Lindsey Tramuta

In addition to buzzy new hotel openings in central Marrakech, the Burning Man–inspired Habitas Agafay has just begun welcoming visitors to the Agafay Desert, a mere 45-minute drive from the city's medina.

Marrakech has a dizzying energy that pulls you in, spins you around, and leaves you wanting more. All good reasons to make sure you have a soothing home for the night—and you will, thanks to a handful of exciting openings. Dreamy riad El Fenn has just added ten new rooms in the hotel’s signature style, mixing intricate artisanal details, bold colors, and striking contemporary art. On the other side of the medina, two new spots are coming this spring. Firstly, Rosemary , a bijou new riad with a calming courtyard and sunny rooftop, from Laurence Leenaert, the designer behind the LRNCE brand of ceramics and textiles. In the leafy Hivernage neighborhood, home to some of the city’s best nightlife, a new Nobu hotel will breathe new life into the former Pearl Hotel. Out in the Agafay Desert, a 45-minute drive from the medina, Habitas has just opened the Burning Man–inspired Caravan Agafay . Don’t go expecting rolling Sahara-style dunes—the stone desert here looks more lunar than sandy—but do expect boho tents, swimming pools, moon gazing, and plenty more.

Marrakech itself continues to be a magnet for artists and designers: The new Monde des Arts de la Parure showcases 3,000 pieces of jewelry, ornaments, and textiles from more than 50 countries in a three-story wood-and-brick space lit by a dramatic octagonal skylight. At the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL), Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa’s “Our Land Just Like A Dream” explores traditional Moroccan creative knowledge, filling the museum’s spaces with works made exclusively in Marrakech through July 2023. —Nicola Chilton

The Manuel Aires Mateus-designed Pa.te.os has just opened in Melides, with four discreet houses that blend into 80 acres of Mediterranean landscape.

Comporta’s lesser-known sister has been quietly simmering for some time now, but 2023 is set to become the year Melides emerges as the Portuguese beach spot to know. Its alluring landscape of white-sand beaches, pine forests, and rice fields will soon welcome exciting new properties, including Christian Louboutin’s much-awaited Vermelho this coming spring. The designer discovered the charm of Melides early—he’s been visiting for 10 years to design his winter collections, even naming one of his shoe lines Melides—and the boutique property will celebrate Portuguese artisanship and design traditions.

And there are others: Spatia —the Comporta resort frequented by travelers looking for minimalist design and quiet respite—will open a second hotel in Melides in 2023, while Umay’s otherworldly villas, inspired by the geometry of seashells, will follow in 2024. Also new to the area is the recently opened Pa. te .os , consisting of four discreet houses on 80 hectares of land, designed by famed Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus to blend into the Mediterranean landscape.

Hotels aside, other 2022 openings like the Melides Pottery Museum, which celebrates Portugal’s rich ceramic history, and beach-front restaurants like À Toa on Praia de Melides , add to the excitement around this buzzy destination. —Abigail Malbon

The Memphian Hotel shines a light on the city's heritage through design and cuisine, much like the city's coolest new restaurants.

Nashville claims a lot of national buzz, but the city of Memphis has been quietly reshaping itself to be the hottest destination in Tennessee. Over the past decade, its downtown has invested billions in revitalization projects—and now, visitors can begin reaping the benefits.

An upgraded Tom Lee Park will open downtown in 2023, and in time for Memphis in May , a month-long festival celebrating the city’s culture with the famed Beale Street Music Festival and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. The $60 million transformation will add new pavilions, meditative paths, riverfront seating, sound gardens, and the Canopy Walk connecting the park to downtown—all a fitting tribute to the park’s heroic namesake, a Black Memphian who, nearly a century ago, rescued passengers from a sinking steamboat on the Mississippi River. Next up: The Walk on Union , said to be the largest new mixed-use development in the Southeast, will play host to retail businesses, green spaces, and two new Hilton hotels as it opens in phases over the next few years.

Memphis is experiencing a hotel boom, with eight new properties in 2022 and more on the way. Recently opened are the funky  The Memphian and Hyatt's first  Caption concept, both of which shine a light on the city’s heritage through design and cuisine, much like the latest crop of Memphis restaurants. Barbecue still reigns, but the city’s trendiest spots are lightening things up: Raw Girls now has two brick-and-mortar smoothie and juice bars, Food Network star chef Tamra Patterson will open a new vegetarian spot in 2023, and craft cocktail bar Cameo , opened this year, serves up sophisticated mocktails. —Kelsey Ogletree

At the foot of the majestic Andes, a crop of stylish new restaurants and hotels—many spearheaded by women—are giving travelers a new reason to raise a glass in Argentina's wine capital.

Toasting with Malbec in front of the majestic Andes is how people celebrate in Mendoza , and a slew of stylish restaurant and hotel openings—many of which are spearheaded by women—provides ever more reason to raise a glass in Argentina’s Great Wine Capital (it is just 90 minutes by plane from Buenos Aires , after all).

Mendoza’s new bodega wining and dining experiences are many. There’s chef Patricia Courtois’s 5 Suelos at Durigutti Family Winemakers (opened April 2022), sommelier Camila Cerezo Pawlak’s Ruda restaurant in Tupungato Winelands (January 2022), and Catena Zapata’s opulent Angélica named for the family matriarch (November 2022).

Zonda at Bodega Lagarde—an organic, B-Corp certified winery that marks its 125th anniversary in 2023—stands out, however, for showcasing the best of Mendoza, from fantastic vintages down to its hard-carved teaspoons. Owner Sofia Pescarmona shares her family’s terroir with guests, who gather herbs and veggies and get a little messy making empanadas during Zonda’s immersive garden-to-table experience. Efforts are rewarded with a nine-course regional tasting menu paired with Lagarde wines, including the refreshing Proyecto Hermanas White Blend that Sofia makes with sister Lucila.

Plus, the latest venture of Susana Balbo—Argentina’s trailblazing female oenologist who helms her namesake winery—saw her lovingly refurbish a mansion with daughter Ana Lovaglio, unveiling it as the seven-suite SB Winemaker’s Lodge & Spa in April 2022; chef Flavia Amad Di Leo runs both the bodega and the hotel’s restaurants. Invigorated by in-room massages and asado by the pool, adventurous guests can then hire the lodge’s VisionAir seaplane, Argentina’s only such aircraft, and explore hidden corners of the world’s eighth-largest country. —Sorrel Moseley-Williams

Mustang, Nepal

Go for: Luxury mountain retreats, rare experiences in a remote destination

From design virtuoso Bill Bensley, the all-inclusive Shinta Mani, set in the remote, once-forbidden region of Mustang, is arguably Asia's most anticipated hotel opening of 2023.

For decades, Nepal has been the Himalayan destination of choice for backpackers and trekkers drawn to its deep-rooted spirituality, endless adventure offerings, and those sky-piercing peaks. This hasn’t been the case for many luxury-minded travelers, though, who often chose neighboring Bhutan for its superior clutch of upscale mountain lodges. That will change in 2023 as Nepal unveils a wave of first-rate boutique accommodations and experiences.

Much of this shift is courtesy the recent update of Mountain Lodges of Nepal , a family-owned collection of deluxe accommodations scattered around the ultra-scenic Annapurna and Everest regions. By the end of 2023, they will introduce 15 premium, intimate lodges—a mixture of refurbished sites and new builds combining tradition (stone walls and colorful cultural motifs) with modernity (like dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass windows)—while offering multi-day treks, wild honey hunting, and helicopter rides to a Mount Everest-facing Champagne breakfast.

Come 2023, the 29-suite Shinta Mani Mustang, a Bensley Collection , arguably Asia’s most anticipated hotel opening, will open in the remote, once-forbidden ancient kingdom region of Mustang. Spearheaded by design virtuoso Bill Bensley, the all-inclusive mountain retreat brings together Tibetan design (incorporating upcycled materials), traditional wellness programs, unique experiences—like guided explorations of the mysterious, ancient “sky caves”—and unparalleled access to one of the Himalaya’s last frontiers. —Travis Levius

Ancestral earthen oven cooking known as pachamanca is offered to guests at El Albergue Ollantaytambo, part of the region's growing effort to showcase Andean food and drink traditions to a wider audience.

The 100-year-old El Albergue Ollantaytambo also functions as a quintessential home base for travelers in the Sacred Valley, proving the village of Ollantaytambo is more than a pit stop en route to Machu Picchu.

Ollantaytambo is best known for its archeological site, a hillside Incan fortress that draws travelers off the train to Machu Picchu. But of late, the village has also become a terroir-driven culinary epicenter in the Sacred Valley, with local entrepreneurs placing a new era of the Andean food and drink traditions on the world stage. Taste herbaceous high-elevation rums, or infuse your own, at Destilería Andina ; sip Andean coffee, or roast souvenir beans, at Cafe Mayu ; and sample craft beer flavored with local fruit at Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado . Old and new continue to meet, through farm-to-table fare paired with creative cocktails at Chuncho ; meanwhile, tradition takes precedence with ancestral earthen oven pachamanca cooking in El Albergue Ollantaytambo ’s farm tour meals. And look for Destilería Andina’s new location with a full-service bar, opening in mid-2023, near Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado.

Don’t make the mistake of hopping on the train after a meal, either—unique hotels further the case for staying the night. The 100-year-old El Albergue Ollantaytambo is a classic home base, but you can also pamper yourself at the Qolqas Eco Lodge (spa included), or sleep perched in a mountainside capsule with valley views at Skylodge Adventure Suites . The latter opened in 2013, but the brand’s new Starlodge Adventure Suites and onsen are 2022 additions.

Plan your trip around cultural moments for the full experience: The Señor de Choquekillka festival, 50 days after Easter, honors the village’s patron saint with food, music, and dance; locals celebrate the winter solstice in June; and the entire village revels during Ollantaytambo’s anniversary every October. —Nico Vera

Queensland has returned thousands of acres to Indigenous groups over the last two years, a shift that has yielded special new experiences for travelers.

New Indigenous-owned and -run experiences include moonlit spearfishing in Daintree National Park, alongside Eastern Kuku Yalanji guides, and Torres Strait Islander-led day trips from Cairns.

Australia is making an effort to return land to its native people, and Queensland has been leading the way, with thousands of acres going back to Indigenous groups over the last two years. For travelers, this shift is yielding new experiences guided by the insight of the original stewards of the land.

The ancient rainforest of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Daintree National Park was part of a parcel returned in 2021, and now the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people are managing the national park alongside the state government. At the newly opened Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre , an ecotourism hub operated by mostly Indigenous staff, visitors walk the land with traditional custodians as guides; Kuku Yalanji Cultural Habitat Tours include night walking, crabbing, and spearfishing under the moon; and on Walkabout Cultural Adventures , Indigenous plants and medicines are highlighted on guided rainforest excursions.

Further north, lands near the Torres Strait Islands—there are at least 274 in the strait between Australia and New Guinea—were returned to Torres Strait Islanders of Aboriginal, Melanesian, and Australian background last year. Now, local Indigenous entrepreneurs have launched companies like Strait Experience , which offers a first-of-its-kind day trip to the islands from Cairns, making the destination more accessible than ever.

Bookend your adventures with a night in any of the chic hotels and resorts set to call Queensland home in 2023, including the Mondrian Gold Coast and the Ritz-Carlton Brisbane, part of the Queens’ Wharf project that is transforming the river’s edge. These join a new luxury hotel faction including The Langham Gold Coast and Dorsett Gold Coast , both of which opened last summer.

Lastly, don’t skip a visit to Queensland’s capital: Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium will host eight games in July and August for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Good thing getting to Queensland is easier than ever, thanks to three weekly nonstop flights between San Francisco and Brisbane, added by United Airlines in October 2022. —Devorah Lev-Tov

The Sharjah Biennial opens in February to celebrate its 30th anniversary, with works from more than 150 artists from 70 countries (above, an installation at the 2017 event, by Joe Namy).

While it might seem like Dubai continues to monopolize much of the U.A.E.’s glitz and buzz, neighboring Sharjah has been quietly asserting itself as the cultural capital of the Emirates. On the heels of striking new galleries from the Sharjah Arts Foundation and architectural marvels like the Foster + Partners–designed House of Wisdom library, the Sharjah Biennial opens in February, on its 30th anniversary, with works from more than 150 artists from 70 countries. Also on deck is the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, curated by Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo in collaboration with visionaries like India’s Rahul Mehrotra and Brazil’s Paulo Tavares. The most atmospheric place to stay in Sharjah is the Chedi Al Bait , a tangle of 53 rooms and eight suites spread across a series of ocher courtyards in the historic district. This year, it gets a refresh with the addition of a 12-room boutique wing built in a 100-year-old family home. There are plush new ways to explore the less-explored emirate’s natural splendors as well. Lux Resorts and Hotels, known for its swanky digs in Mauritius , the Maldives , and China , is making its Middle Eastern debut with two new retreats in Sharjah coming in 2023: Lux Al Jabal is a beach escape overlooking an untouched stretch of the Gulf of Oman, while Lux Al Bridi will be a safari camp brimming with wildlife in the sprawling Al Bridi Nature Reserve. —Sarah Khan

Srinagar, an alluring and once hard-to-visit destination in the Kashmir Valley, is opening up to travelers in a big way in 2023, with new roadways making it easier than ever to get in and around.

In the heart of the Kashmir Valley, the gem of Srinagar—with its winding waterways and colorful houseboats—is equally alluring and challenging to plan a visit to. Yet the destination seems to be shifting gears, with the government greenlighting development projects that will benefit travelers.

Srinagar has some vibrant new openings:  Karan Mahal , a swanky, intimate stay in the historic residence of Kashmir’s former rulers and amid nearly 60 acres of orchards and woods, launched last year, while  Qayaam Gah , a stylish, Sufi-inspired nature retreat in the Zabarwan Hills, with unfettered bird’s-eye views of Dal Lake, opened this summer. Additionally, Indian Hotels Company Limited (also behind the Taj Hotels) will bring its affordable brand, Ginger Hotels , to Srinagar in the first half of 2023.

The capital is also about to get a boost in accessibility, with a spate of highways and tunnels planned to open in 2023 that will, among other connections, make it easier to drive from Kashmir—across breathtaking landscapes—to neighboring Ladakh, even in winter. Other side trips that will be easier to reach, thanks to the new infrastructure: Sonamarg (which translates to “golden meadow”), a stunning hill station that is poised for substantial tourism development in the years to come, and Pahalgam, an idyllic getaway that has long drawn travelers to its pastoral charms. The latter will see, in early 2023, the opening of  Shepherd’s Barn , a cottage stay by Ramneek Kaur (whose family owns the Bollywood-favorite  Pahalgam Hotel ), which will add rooms to an existing program of craft tours and local activities under the auspices of the Shepherd Crafts Cultural Centre. With so much change underfoot, there is no better time to experience the area— and before everyone else starts to do the same. —Saumya Ancheri

After a decade of construction, the Taipei Performing Arts Center has finally opened—just as the country has begun welcoming international visitors again.

Elegant towering teahouses, otherworldly landscapes, and culinary excellence have long tempted travelers to Taiwan . Now, after more than two years, the island nation has reopened its borders to international visitors—and there’s quite a bit to catch up on.

One decade of construction later, the Taipei Performing Arts Center is finally open, with three performance spaces housed within sleek geometric buildings. A few kilometers south, the stylish Hotel Resonance Taipei recently unbolted its doors with 175 fresh guest rooms, offering sweeping city views and sleek modern interiors. Just before borders closed, the Taipei location of The Place hotel—equal parts polished and relaxing, with a teahouse in its lobby—opened in Nangang, and a design-forward branch of the Kimpton set down roots in the Da’An District. There’s even more to come, with the Sotetsu Grand Fresa Taipei Ximen slated to open in 2023 in the bustling Ximending, which was just named one of the “51 Coolest Neighborhoods In The World” by Time Out. Plan your meals around any of the five restaurants that earned Michelin stars in 2022: Shin Yeh Taiwanese Signature, Holt, Yu Kapo, Paris 1930 de Hideki Takayama, and Sushiyoshi.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s oldest city, Tainan, has been attracting travelers who hop on the high-speed rail, headed for one of the 44 restaurants that earned Tainan its addition to the 2022 Michelin Guide . Also making it worth the trip: Anping Tree House, an abandoned warehouse that has been swallowed by banyan trees; the colorful and artsy Shennong Street; and when you’re ready for a nap, Mao House , a chic bed and breakfast that stands in stark contrast to its architecturally staid neighbors. —Ella Quittner

Big-deal infrastructure enhancements are making it easier to reach Turks and Caicos’ less frequented outer islands, changing what it means to have an exclusive experience in the archipelago.

The exquisite white sands and blue waters of Grace Bay Beach have long been the coveted endgame for visitors to Turks and Caicos . Lately, though, a wave of new hotels and developments in more remote parts of the island chain are changing what it means to have an exclusive experience here.

Leading the way, the 46-unit Rock House opened this past May, with its sleek Mediterranean style (a departure from the archipelago’s traditional colonial aesthetic), private plunge pools, and sustainability efforts that preserve native foliage and limestone. But Rock House’s real magic is undeniably in its location: a clifftop perch above a secluded beach on Grace Bay’s north shore, where you can while away your days snorkeling in a protected marine sanctuary. More properties slated to come in 2023 include the 31-acre South Bank Turks & Caicos , a residential resort and marina, opening in March, at the top of Long Bay Beach with 18 waterfront villas and a five-acre swimming lagoon. The Strand Turks & Caicos will follow later in 2023, 20 minutes south of Grace Bay, with oceanfront residences and what feels like its own peninsula on Cooper Jack Bay.

Big-deal infrastructure enhancements are also making it easier to reach Turks and Caicos’ less frequented outer islands. On Grand Turks, a $25 million dock extension is set to welcome larger cruise ships in 2023. And on tiny South Caicos, a significant upgrade to the single-runway South Caicos Airport is scheduled for completion in June, meaning improved access to the least populated of the islands—like the uber-luxe Sailrock Resort , a favorite of celebs like Justin Bieber and Regina King. —Nina Kokotas Hahn

Go for: A revived cultural calendar, dazzling new hotels

In 2023, Vienna will welcome the return of the Viennese ball season after a two-year hiatus.

Vienna has long been a European capital of groundbreaking art and music, and in 2023 the city has several landmark anniversaries on its cultural calendar.

After a two-year hiatus, the 2023 Viennese ball season promises lush nights of live orchestral music and dancing in black-tie. Two of the year’s sparkliest, the Vienna Opera Ball and the Vienna Philharmonic Ball, are also marking their 65th and 80th anniversaries, respectively. The latter is returning  on January 19 with performances by the legendary orchestra. Meanwhile, the Opera Ball, to be held  on February 16 , will host dancing “Under the Sign of Solidarity”—the night’s theme—in collaboration with  Österreich hilft Österreich (Austria Helps Austria) to fundraise for those most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Belvedere, home to Gustav Klimt’s famous  The Kiss , is celebrating 300 years since its completion with a year-long exhibition, “ The Belvedere: 300 Years a Place of Art ,” paying homage to the museum’s impact on Viennese art history. Also not to be missed in 2023: “ Klimt. Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse… ,” a collaborative exhibit by the Belvedere and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, showcasing the prominent artists who influenced the master of Viennese Modernism.

Kick your feet up at Vienna’s chic new hotels. The  Rosewood Vienna , which opened in 2022, will welcome its first full year of guests with the new Asaya Spa. Then, in late 2023, The Hoxton is set to open a 196-room hotel featuring an events auditorium (a first for the hotel brand) honoring Vienna’s legacy as a hub for live entertainment and culture. —Matt Ortile

In lush Wales, a foodie renaissance is taking place—drawing travelers to terroir-driven restaurants, distilleries, and revived pubs in untrammeled areas.

A Welsh foodie renaissance has, admittedly, taken a while to arrive. But a new generation of chefs are digging into their terroir and emerging with handfuls of truffles, scallops, and cheeses, from James Sommerin’s Home restaurant in Penarth, to SY23 in seaside Aberystwyth, headed by Great British Menu finalist Nathan Davies. There’s also been the rise of hard-to-reach destination restaurants determinedly doing their own thing, such as Annwn in deepest Pembrokeshire, where Matt Powell forages most of his ingredients from the shoreline (the project is currently on hold as it relocates), and Gareth Ward’s Ynyshir in the Dyfi Valley , which was just awarded a second Michelin star. Ward’s empire will grow in 2023 with the opening of eight-seat Gwen—named after his mother—with sourdough pizzas on the menu. Paternoster Farm , meanwhile, set in a former Pembroke cowshed, is doing wondrous things with Porthilly oysters, Welsh Mountain lamb, and sea beet—with its Five Mile Feasts, a special menu, gathering up all sorts of local treasures.

In Cardigan, the Albion Aberteifi —certainly the coolest hotel to arrive in Wales in years—is set to open a Scandi-Japanese restaurant on the river bank in 2023, along with a woodland onsen and spa. Wales seems to be turning into a hub for the UK’s thriving outdoor sauna scene: Snowdonia-based Heartwood Saunas is launching a new forest project this December, where groups of up to 10 can use a wood-fired sauna before jumping in the pools of the River Dulas (or head to the yoga deck), all while surrounded by old oak trees and natural pools. In Carmarthenshire, the seven-mile stretch of Pendine Sands is enjoying a revival. Caban hotel is opening in the spring alongside the Museum of Speed , which celebrates the many land-speed records made on the beach—including one by actor Idris Elba in a Bentley Continental GT. Reducing the speed a notch, a new slow-travel route of roads and walking paths, The Wild Drovers’ Way , unfurls over 180 miles from the foothills of the Cambrians into the Brecon Beacons—a lovely way to appreciate some of Wales’ rural highlights.

If you need somewhere to toast all this, you could head to Swansea, where Penderyn will open its new whisky-distillery experience in March, while in Cardiff, the St Fagans Museum of National History has been rebuilding the iconic Vulcan pub (beloved of Manic Street Preachers) on its grounds, set to open in 2024. Western Japan

Go for: Expedition cruises in the Seto Inland Sea, new onsen experiences

Luxury small ship company Ponant will launch a first-ever expedition cruise from Osaka in 2023, exploring old feudal towns and traditional fishing villages on Japan's oldest sea route.

New luxury openings and a world’s-first expedition cruise are among a plethora of reasons to head for western Japan in 2023. In the Seto Inland Sea, which separates Japan’s main island of Honshu from the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu, luxury small-ship company Ponant has announced a first-ever expedition cruise from Osaka in 2023, which will sail along Japan’s oldest sea route. Exploring old feudal towns and traditional fishing villages on the coast of Honshu, as well as Inland Sea islands such as Inujima—once a copper mining hub and now one of the famous contemporary “Art Islands”—the 264-guest Le Soléal will chart a seven-night course towards the Sea of Japan, starting in May 2023. Also in the Seto Inland Sea, in a forest on Awaji Island, wellness retreat Zenbo Seinei just opened its doors. Designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Shigeru Ban, it features a 21-meter-long gallery for zazen meditation and a restaurant celebrating Japan’s culture of fermented foods.

On Kyushu island , the new Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen now conveniently connects cosmopolitan Nagasaki to Japan’s vast bullet train network. Good thing, as there’s a new Ritz-Carlton coming in the summer of 2023 to the vibrant, gateway city of Fukuoka ; and in the hot-spring town of Yufuin, Kengo Kuma—the architect behind the Japan National Stadium for the Tokyo 2020 games—has completed a new gallery at Comico Art Museum to house works by Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others, as well as two exclusive-use “Art Houses” with private onsen baths. Nearby, Kuma has also created the gorgeous KAI Yufuin , a contemporary onsen ryokan with views of Mount Yufu and enveloped in rice terraces whose beauty changes with the seasons. —Kate Crockett

With a boom of design-forward stays opening their doors—in an already easy-to-love destination marked by verdant jungle and brilliant waterways—the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico’s southeastern bounds is poised to be one of the most enticing areas to visit this year.

The 22-bungalow Boca de Agua is set to open in April in Bacalar , with suites designed by architect Frida Escobedo, who was recently tapped for the forthcoming contemporary art wing at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City . North of Bacalar, tucked within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is Casa Chablé , which will open in December 2022 with 10 rooms and bungalows. Guests take a 40-minute boat ride through lush mangrove forests, to arrive at the resort’s 12 acres of tropical jungle fronted by white-sand beaches. Plus, situated in the tranquil Xpu-ha cove, between the two bustling towns of Tulum and Playa del Carmen, the ultra-luxurious boutique property Hotel Esencia opened in November as one of the most refined offerings in Riviera Maya: the Esencia Mansion, a four-bedroom private hideaway with its own speakeasy, cinema, and rooftop infinity pool. And just outside of Mérida is the new Galopina , a five-bedroom, family-run guesthouse from Mexican owners Elisa Navarrete and Guillaume Galopin. After a stint in Paris , they returned to their home country and created their dream homestead in the jungle with miles of trails, organic gardens, and guest rooms offering meditative terraces. In May 2023, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel , will reopen on the Riviera Maya with 10 new waterfront suites, a culinary program overseen by chef Daniel Camacho, and a new look that will showcase Mayan culture and design with work by local artisans. —Michaela Trimble

Zamora, Spain

Go for: Romanesque architecture, dazzling lakes, and improved access from Madrid

Aceaas de Olivares next to Zamora city Spain. An evocative scenario of a rurality still very close to us...

Zamora, which is known for having the most Romanesque architecture in Europe, is becoming a European World Heritage Site in 2023—perfect timing, as a new high-speed train from Madrid makes it easier to reach than ever.

Few know—even in Spain —that Zamora is the city with the most Romanesque architecture in Europe, but it was reason enough for UNESCO to make Zamora a European World Heritage Site for 2023. Additionally, its proximity to Madrid —an hour away thanks to a new high-speed AVE train, inaugurated just a year ago—put this underrated town high on our must-visit list.

But there is more to Zamora, such as its enormous modernist legacy and its Lagunas de Villafáfila, a collection of lakes that are home to thousands of migratory birds each season. There’s even more to see, scattered throughout the province: Lake Sanabria is the largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula, and just a few miles away, Puebla de Sanabria is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Towards the east you will find Toro, the epicenter of bold red wines—and home to critically acclaimed winery Numanthia that’s credited with putting the wine region on the map. Not far away, in the heart of Tierra de Campos, snag a table at Lera , which got its Michelin star in 2022, and is a favorite among wild game enthusiasts.

Finally, to the south, Arribes del Duero shows that Zamora province has it all—even fjords. Beautiful crags and cliffs mark the border with Portugal in a natural park that has become a center for viticulture and attracts reputed international winemakers. Olive, citrus, and other fruit trees, artisanal ceramics, and stunning natural beauty turn this secluded corner into a Mediterranean paradise. Consider the luxurious Hacienda Zorita Natural Reserve , and the Castillo de Buen Amor (refurbished in 2021) in Salamanca, just a 30-minute drive away, the perfect setting for your quaint Zamora escape. —David Moralejo
