Frequently asked questions about KAYAK

How do i find travel deals on kayak.

Simply use one of our travel search engines to scan for prices gathered from hundreds of travel sites. KAYAK’s search results pages have loads of filter options to help you find deals, discover exactly what you’re looking for and make booking seamless. Plus, there’s no extra fee from KAYAK.

What makes KAYAK a great travel app?

On the KAYAK app for iOS and Android you’ll find all the great travel offers found on the website and much more. There are special mobile rates and app only deals that allow you to save even more money. Plus, you can get notifications straight to your phone letting you know when prices for your next trip have dropped. But the KAYAK app is much more than just a travel app. Use the Trips function to manage your travel itinerary and get up to date status alerts on flights, check-in changes and to store your boarding pass. Even if you’re in the middle of nowhere on your travels, you can still access your travel notes via Trips, as no internet connection is required.

How can I use KAYAK to manage my travel bookings?

KAYAK Trips creates a travel itinerary for you that will give you flight status alerts, can be shared with friends and more. Simply forward your booking confirmations to [email protected] or use the KAYAK app and sync your email account to keep all your travel plans organized in one app, even if you didn’t book with KAYAK. You can share your holiday plans with friends and family and also check out your travel stats for past vacations, like how far you’ve traveled, your most popular cities and how many times you’ve traveled around the world. Even if you don’t have signal, don’t worry, as you can access Trips to check out your itineraries whilst on the road. Your data is safe and secure with us and you won’t have to re-enter credit card info when booking future trips. If you want to make changes or cancel bookings, then you should contact the travel provider, which is provided on the booking confirmation.

What are KAYAK Price Alerts?

Instead of manually checking back in on the price of your next flight or stay, let KAYAK do the hard work for you with KAYAK Price Alerts. Once you’ve saved your search, our data will determine how the price will rise or fluctuate over the coming days. You’ll then get a push notification letting you know when’s the perfect time to book.

Search flights , hotels , rental cars , travel guides and more with KAYAK. KAYAK searches hundreds of other travel sites at once to get you the information you need to make the right decisions.

How to find cheap flight deals with momondo

  • How does momondo find such cheap airfare? momondo searches across hundreds of airlines and travel sites, from major booking sites to individual company sites, to give you as many cheap airfare options as possible. When you conduct a single search on momondo, you can find and compare cheap airline tickets like you’ve done hundreds of searches at once. momondo is completely free to use - with no hidden charges or fees - and the prices you see are never affected by your searches, no matter how many you make. We believe in an open world, where traveling and getting acquainted across borders and cultures is available to us all, so we’re committed to showing you the cheapest flights in our flight finder.
  • How do I find the best price on plane tickets? Choose your destination and preferred travel dates, and we’ll provide you with an overview of the cheapest, quickest, and best flights so you can compare prices and book flights with confidence. Flexible on dates? It’s even easier to find cheap flights by using our Price Calendar (found above your search results), which shows you the cheapest travel dates. This is available on all of our most popular flight routes.
  • How can Mix & Match save me money? Sometimes you can save money by combining flight tickets from different suppliers, and we call that Mix & Match. This means you can book your outbound flight with one supplier, and your return flight with another. If you can save money by combining tickets from different suppliers, we’ll automatically include this option in your flight results and label it Mix & Match. You’ll have to complete two separate booking flows after you select this deal on our site, but it’s worth it if you can save money over a traditional round-trip with one supplier. It’s an advanced way of getting the cheapest flights even if they’re offered by different suppliers.
  • How do I make sure I don’t miss a flight deal? Sign up for Price Alerts on your favorite flight routes and automatically get live price updates, so you can book flights when the price is right. You can do so next to your flight search results or in the profile menu. If you're on our app, you will find Price Alerts in the navigation menu. You can also subscribe to special offers and limited-time flight deals from our partners. Just sign in, go to Notifications in your profile and subscribe to the topics you’re interested in.

How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

The desire to get a good deal unites practically all travelers. Whether you're looking for a cheap getaway or a luxury vacation, no one wants to spend more than necessary. When it comes to booking flights, travelers may naturally head to an airline's website. However, that's not always the best site to book flights.

Whether it's taking advantage of credit card perks, earning bonus miles or saving money, the best flight booking site can vary depending on your situation and willingness to get creative. Let's take a look at six of the best sites to book flights and when each is the best option.

The best flight booking sites

1. google flights.

For ease, speed and features, Google Flights is arguably the best website for flight searches. Search results appear almost instantly. Filters let you narrow down to nonstop options, select a subset of airlines, limit by price or factor in the price of a bag. Similarly, you can use Google Flights filters to avoid certain airlines, multi-stop itineraries, long layovers, early flights or pretty much whatever you might want to avoid.

You can easily check flexible dates, and if you're flexible on where you go you can use the Explore map to see prices for a variety of destinations for certain dates, a certain month or anytime in the next six months.

travel agency for cheap flights

Google Flights partners with hundreds of airlines and online travel agencies (OTAs) to pull current flight prices. That way you don't have to search each of these sites to be able to see the options. Once you select your preferred trip, Google Flights links you to the top booking options for actually booking your flight — including the airline itself and the best OTA booking options.

travel agency for cheap flights

The downsides of Google Flights are few. One downside is that Google Flights doesn't always show the cheapest prices — particularly for international flights. That means it's worth double-checking prices on another site before booking through Google Flights.

Like Google Flights, Kayak searches hundreds of other websites and flight booking platforms to find the best deal. Kayak generally doesn't let you book flights directly. However, one benefit of Kayak is the streamlined process. Rather than having to click through several pages to confirm your selection, clicking "view deal" on the results page can take you right to the cheapest booking option.

travel agency for cheap flights

Also, some travelers may find Kayak's flexible date search a bit easier to work with as you can see results from several days in the search results — eliminating the need to check each day's results separately.

travel agency for cheap flights

But perhaps the most important reason to use Kayak instead of Google Flights is that it can catch better deals. For example, we found a $550 round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Barcelona using Google Flights. Kayak found a way to lower that price to just $472 round-trip — at least once you scroll past an advertisement.

Note that Kayak manages other flight search sites — including Momondo and Cheapflights — so the results may be very similar between these sister sites.

So far, we've focused on ease in flight searching, and that's going to be enough for many travelers. However, now let's add in some additional elements to consider when choosing the best flight booking site: earning rewards and saving by booking packages. Expedia excels at both of these.

Through the new One Key rewards program , travelers can earn 0.2% in OneKeyCash from flight bookings made through Expedia. That's not much, but it can stack on top of the awards you earn from the airline and those that you earn on your credit card purchase.

Even better, you'll earn credits toward One Key elite status by booking your flight through Expedia. As you climb up the tiers, you'll unlock up to 20% savings on hotels, get hotel upgrades, priority support and even price drop protection.

Plus, Expedia boasts that travelers can "save up to 30%" when bundling a hotel with a flight booking — although actual discounts are likely to vary.

4. Capital One Travel

For many Capital One cardholders, Capital One Travel might just be the best flight booking site. Part of this is to take advantage of cardholder benefits.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

For example, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders earn 5x Capital One miles when booking flights through the Capital One Travel portal. Plus, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders get up to $300 off travel booked through the Capital One Travel portal each cardholder year.

Also, Capital One Travel can help you truly get the best price for your flight. Capital One partnered with travel data company Hopper to show suggestions about when it's the best time to book.

Capital One backs up these recommendations with money. If you book a flight through Capital One Travel when Hopper recommends doing so, you'll get up to a $50 credit toward future travel if the price drops within the next 10 days.

Would you be willing to book a trip as two separate tickets in order to save money? That's the idea behind Kiwi. Instead of simply searching flights from your home airport to your destination, Kiwi checks all potential options to get between A and B. That could mean taking a bus or train from your home city to another to catch a flight to your destination. Or, Kiwi might pair a low-cost domestic flight with a cheap international flight from another city to lower your total cost.

Protect your upfront travel expenses by booking with a card that has travel insurance or by purchasing a separate policy .

For example, when we priced out a round-trip flight from Phoenix to Tokyo, the cheapest option when booked as one ticket cost $1,353 round-trip — and that's with an overnight stay in Vancouver.

travel agency for cheap flights

Pricing out the same itinerary and dates through Kiwi drops the price to just $789 round-trip. The secret? Booking this as two round-trip flights: One from Phoenix to Los Angeles on Frontier and a separate round-trip from Los Angeles to Tokyo on Zipair.

travel agency for cheap flights

Keep in mind that there are risks with booking separate tickets to get where you want to go. If a delay or cancellation causes you to miss your connection, the second airline/bus/train company isn't obligated to honor your ticket and rebook you on the next option. So make sure to factor in all of the risks of booking travel like this.

6. BookWithMatrix

ITA Matrix is a very powerful and ultra-customizable search platform for finding exactly the flight itinerary you want — whether that's booking a longer layover, avoiding certain aircraft types or booking nerdy trips such as the Alaska Milk Run .

The catch: Travelers can't actually book flights through ITA Matrix. And, unlike Google Flights, ITA Matrix doesn't even link to the best flight booking site for that itinerary. Instead, travelers are left to attempt to re-create the same itinerary through another flight booking website — which can be hard in the case of certain complex itineraries.

travel agency for cheap flights

Enter BookWithMatrix. Travelers can copy-paste their perfect itinerary from ITA Matrix into BookWithMatrix to get bookable links through the airline or select OTAs.

travel agency for cheap flights

Alternatively, travelers have the option to install the PowerTools extension in Google Chrome .

This extension adds booking links right on the ITA Matrix itinerary page, avoiding the need to browse to another page.

Popular cards for booking flights

Depending on the airline and credit card issuer you choose, you may earn anywhere from 1 to 3 miles per dollar spent on the card that you can put towards booking flights.

You usually earn more when you use the card to purchase travel directly from the airline. You could also earn more by making purchases in expense categories that pay bonus miles, like restaurants or gas stations (these vary from issuer to issuer).

• 2 miles per $1 at restaurants and hotels (when booked directly with hotel).

• 1 mile per $1 on all other purchases.

• 2 points per $1 on Southwest purchases.

• 2 points per $1 on Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partner purchases, local transit and commuting (including rideshare), and on internet, cable, phone services and select streaming.

• 1 point per $1 on all other purchases.

• 6 points per $1 with JetBlue.

• 2 points per $1 at restaurants and grocery stores.

• 1 point per $1 on other purchases.

• 1 Mosaic tile per $1,000 spent.

When you open a new airline credit card account, you may be eligible for a big welcome bonus after meeting a minimum purchase requirement. After that, you'll continue to earn miles for purchases you would have made anyway.

If you seek more flexibility in redeeming miles for award flights, consider applying for a more general travel credit card instead. A more general travel credit card differs from an airline card in that you can book flights with multiple carriers, rather than reaping the benefits of staying loyal to a single brand.

The more high-end (or 'premium' ) the travel credit card, the more benefits you can enjoy, including airport lounge access or automatic elite status in certain programs. That said, a brand-specific airline card can net you benefits like waived baggage fees, which can have meaningful dollar value.

Final thoughts on the best flight booking site

There's not a one-size-fits-all best website for booking flights. Instead, the best flight booking site for you is going to depend on how simple you want the process to be, whether you're willing to get creative with your booking, and even which credit cards you have.

For most travelers, the simplicity of Google Flights is going to make it the best one-stop shop for searching and booking flights. However, it's worth considering other options if you're flying internationally, want to book a flight-and-hotel package or have a Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card .

Guadalajara, mexico, cancún, mexico, atlanta, united states.

Search for flexible deals on international flights using Multi-city. You can choose multiple cities to visit, select the dates or date range you’d like to travel, and our Kiwi-Code will find you an itinerary. You can then filter by cheapest, fastest or best, and buy the whole itinerary for one price, in one click.

NOMAD is a feature of Kiwi.com that helps you find the cheapest Multi-city price if you want to visit a number of cities, but you’re flexible about which order to see them. It’s a travel hack that exists only to find you the cheapest price. Select NOMAD from the drop-down search menu, enter your origin city and the destinations you’d like to visit. Choose a time period to stay in each city. Select an end city (or return to your origin city), and click Search journeys. NOMAD then calculates every possible route combination and finds you the cheapest. Like Multi-city, you can book your whole itinerary for one price, in one click. It’s an amazing tool, and one that’s exclusive to Kiwi.com.

Using Kiwi.com’s Kiwi-Code, even if the airlines on your itinerary don’t usually have a partnership to work together, we can combine routes and deals that don’t normally exist to give you the cheapest price available for your entire trip.

  • Flying on a budget

If you always want to see the cheapest deals, Kiwi.com has a number of ways to help. If you subscribe to Kiwi.com, we will send alerts and offers directly to you so you’ll never miss a low price again.

When you search, you can also set up a Price Alert: this means that Kiwi.com searches low prices for you! Choose the route you’re interested in, and on the results screen you will see a ‘Create price alert’ button. Click this and choose a price range. When the price of your route changes by this amount, we will email you to tell you. You can then book at this cheaper price.

Sometimes, routes open and close depending on the season, the popularity of the route, or other unforeseen conditions. If you search for a route and there are no results, Kiwi.com Availability Alerts can help. Click ‘Notify me’, and when this route opens, we will message you.

When you search for a route that combines both short- and long-haul flights, you can work within your budget by combining different cabin classes: economy, premium economy, business class or first class. For example, if you want to fly from New York to Paris in business class, but don’t want to pay for the same on the Paris to Berlin part of your itinerary, you can choose not to. This allows you to have better prices: mixed cabin classes are more affordable than booking only business or first class trips, and it also gives you more route options.

Another way to save even more money is with our flexible Fare Types . When you book with Kiwi.com, we offer three different Fare Types, so you can choose the best combination of price and flexibility. The Saver ticket is the option to choose if you don’t plan to cancel or change your trip, and gives you the absolute lowest price available. The Standard ticket gives you the option to rebook at a later date, and the Flexi ticket means you have the security to be able to not only rebook, you can also cancel your trip entirely.

  • Why book with Kiwi.com?

With over 480 carriers and more than 50 million daily searches, Kiwi.com is fast becoming an essential tool for people who want to save money on travel .

As well as finding the cheapest prices, Kiwi.com has a number of ways to make sure you get to your destination smoothly.

When you book with Kiwi.com, you can add the Disruption Protection to your journey. This means that if there is a problem with your trip — a canceled flight, a missed connection, a carrier change — contact us, and Kiwi.com will find a new flight, offer you a refund, or find alternative transport to your destination. In the meantime, we may also provide a contribution to refreshments or accommodation, so you can relax while we do the work.

The Disruption Protection is especially recommended for itineraries that include multiple carriers: if there’s a problem, we’ll contact them for you and make alternative arrangements. Our 24/7 customer support is available across 14 languages, so there will always be someone there to help.

To save even more money and have more flexible travel options, Kiwi.com gives you the choice to arrive and depart from different airports.

When you search for a flight to or from a city, if that city has more than one airport, Kiwi.com finds the cheapest route, even if the airport you arrive at is different from the airport you depart from.

You can choose to remove this feature when you search, but to search and book the best low-cost route, this finds the cheapest way to fly.

If you subscribe to Kiwi.com, you can set up a Price Alert. We will then inform you when the price of your chosen route changes, so you can get the best deal.

It’s best to be flexible when you book flights. Use Kiwi.com’s Search filters to change the time of the flight, fly into or out of different airports, or look for the green Travel Hack star for special discounts.

Airlines will often run special promotions or flash sales. Kiwi.com’s Kiwi-Code checks over two billion prices every single day, so if you subscribe to Kiwi.com, we will message you with offers and deals when they happen.

Kiwi.com finds the cheapest prices by creating routes that wouldn’t normally exist. We connect airlines that wouldn’t usually work together, giving you prices that the airlines don’t want you to see.

If you have a route that you book often, Kiwi.com can send you reminders about discounts or offers on that route.

Booking a multi-city flight on Kiwi.com can save you money, as we combine carriers that don’t normally cooperate to get you the cheapest price. Our NOMAD feature makes multi-city routes even cheaper.

When you search on Kiwi.com, you can choose different arrival and departure cities, or even choose to fly into or out of specific airports.

Build your itinerary by searching with Kiwi.com, and you can buy all your flights on one ticket for one single price.

When you search on Kiwi.com, you can search by date range. As you search, the calendar will show you prices of flights on individual days.

Alternatively, select a range of months, create a Price Alert, and we will find the cheapest date in the cheapest month to fly.

The cheapest way to get a last-minute flight is flexibility. Try searching from your home city to Anywhere, and Kiwi.com will show you the cheapest available flights.

Not always. The best time to buy a flight can vary, so the best thing to do is download the Kiwi.com app and create a Price Alert on your chosen route. This way, you’ll know when the price of your route changes, and can buy it at a low price.

Sometimes airlines sell flights with layovers cheaper than direct flights. You can take advantage of this fact with Kiwi.com’s Hidden Cities travel hack. See above for more information.

Airlines may offer layovers in some cities, often their hub. However, with Kiwi.com, you can create a layover yourself using our Multi-city search. Search via the city you’d like to spend your layover in, and we’ll find you the cheapest flights into and out of there. You get more options because it’s not the airline’s choice — it’s yours!

Flights with layovers can be cheaper, especially if you’re traveling with only cabin baggage. Kiwi.com’s Hidden Cities travel hack searches routes that will take you to your destination as part of a longer itinerary. Look for the green Travel Hack star when you search.

Many airlines know that direct flights are more popular, and so will charge more on those popular routes. On Kiwi.com, you can see prices the airlines don’t want you to see, because we can offer you flights that only include one leg of a trip. See the sections on Hidden Cities and Throwaway Ticketing above for more information.

It’s not a trick: search and book with Kiwi.com! Use our incredible Search technology — powered by our revolutionary Kiwi-Code — to find prices and routes that would otherwise be hidden. Download the Kiwi.com app to get alerts and deals sent directly to you.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are often cheap days to fly. Search using the calendar on Kiwi.com to see flight prices on individual days and pick the one that’s best for you.

Flight prices may be lower if you fly on a Tuesday. Kiwi.com’s pricing calendar shows you the lowest price on each date, so you can choose one day, or a range of dates, and Kiwi.com will find the cheapest option.

Searching on Saturday and Sunday sometimes gives lower prices than Thursday and Friday, but Kiwi.com takes away the doubt by offering notifications and alerts when prices come into a range that you choose. Subscribe to Kiwi.com to receive special deals, offers and alerts.

Flight prices can go up as well as down, so to secure the best deal regardless of the date, when you search on Kiwi.com, hit the little bell symbol to set up a Price Alert. Then just sit back and wait for the lower prices to come to you!

Airlines offer different pricing structures, so to be sure you get the best deal, use Kiwi.com’s flexible Search. We search over 480 carriers, so you can choose a range of dates, and we’ll find the best deal from all of those airlines within those dates. That means you can be sure you’re getting the best deal no matter when you book.

Get the best deal without the hassle: The best sites to book flights

If you're not booking direct, try one of these sites to book flights.

man holding credit card looking at computer

Finding cheap flights can feel like a full-time job, with prices varying wildly across different booking sites and search engines. Spend too little time searching, and you could easily overpay. But go down an endless rabbit hole of flight searches, and the “deal” you scored may not be worth the hassle.

Google Flights: The easy, feature-packed option

  • Kayak: The price comparison specialist

Capital One Travel: Great value for cardholders

Expedia: bundle flights, hotels and earn rewards, bottom line.

The good news is that not all flight search engines are created equal. Some make it easier to find great deals without the headache of combing through countless options and websites. When you use the right flight booking site for your needs, you can take the stress out of trip planning while still saving big.

Don’t worry – we’re here to help! We compiled some of the best sites to book flights and get fantastic value with minimal effort.

For simplicity combined with powerful search capabilities and features, it’s hard to beat Google Flights. Just enter your origin, destination, and travel dates, and Google instantly pulls flight results from across hundreds of airlines and online travel agencies.

The search filters are robust. You can quickly narrow things down by airline, number of stops, departure times, flight duration, price range, and more. You can even filter out basic economy fares or flights on certain aircraft types.

One of the most useful features is the explore map, which is great for finding cheap destinations if your travel dates are at least somewhat flexible. Just select your home airport and possible travel dates, and Google will show you the lowest fares to different regions of the world.

The main downside of Google Flights is that it doesn’t always surface the absolute cheapest fares, particularly for international routes to less traveled destinations. But for a fast, clean search experience with plenty of customization, Google Flights is tough to top.

Kayak: The price comparison specialist

While Google Flights queries a huge range of sources, Kayak takes things even further by scanning across hundreds of individual airline and online travel agency websites to try to find the lowest fares. It doesn’t sell tickets directly, but it streamlines the booking process by linking you straight to the cheapest option to finalize your purchase.

Kayak’s flexible date search calendar is cleanly designed and makes it easy to see at a glance the cheapest days to fly for your particular route. You can quickly compare fares across an entire month or two to find the best deal. But most importantly, in testing, Kayak frequently surfaces lower fares than Google Flights, especially for international routes.

For frequent Capital One credit card users, the issuer’s dedicated travel portal could be the most rewarding flight booking site. Key benefits include bonus rewards on travel purchases made through the portal as well as statement credits that can trim costs.

Those with the premium Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card earn a hefty 5x miles spent on flights and hotels booked through Capital One Travel. In addition, Venture X cardholders receive up to a $300 annual travel credit that can be used to offset bookings made through the Capital One Travel portal.

So, booking even just a modest $300 flight through the portal would essentially make it free after factoring in the travel credit.

Capital One Travel also partners with travel data company Hopper to provide pricing forecasts and recommendations on when to book to get the best deal. As an added incentive, they’ll give you up to a $50 credit toward future travel if the price drops for the same itinerary within 10 days of when you booked with their recommendation.

For some travelers, factors like earning rewards from bookings and packaging flights with hotels can be higher priorities than finding the absolute rock-bottom price.

For those looking at the fuller picture, Expedia could be the best flight booking site.

Through Expedia’s new One Key rewards program, travelers earn back 0.2% of their flight booking cost in the form of OneKeyCash. It’s not a huge return, but it can help offset costs a bit and stack with rewards earned from your credit card and the airline itself.

More compelling are the credits you’ll earn toward elite status in the One Key program. Work your way up to the higher elite tiers, and you’ll unlock benefits like bonus OneKeyCash earnings, hotel upgrades, and price protection on bookings.

Additionally, Expedia advertises potential savings of up to 30% when bundling your hotel and flight into a vacation package. While actual discounts will likely be smaller in many cases, it’s still worth pricing out the package option if you need both air and hotel for an upcoming trip.

At the end of the day, there is no definitive “best” flight booking site for every situation. The right option for you will depend on your particular priorities and how much time and effort you’re willing to invest to potentially save a bit more.

For those looking for simplicity and a quick, powerful search experience, it’s hard to beat Google Flights. For comparing prices across the most sources, Kayak is a great option. Those wanting to earn extra rewards or discounts for packaging a hotel should look at sites like Expedia, while certain Capital One cardholders can get value from the issuer’s travel portal.

Whichever route you take, using the right flight booking site for your needs can make finding a great deal much easier.

Iceland is one of the most fascinating countries in the world: an oversized island of fire and ice between North America and mainland Europe in the North Atlantic. While this island is somewhat larger than Ireland, Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe, which means Iceland abounds in open spaces and natural wonders. And with Reykjavík as its cultural center, Iceland touts additional great lures, from a thriving art and music scene to intriguing cuisine and colorful architecture.

One of the country's greatest features has to do with its positioning. Being so far north, Iceland is treated to wildly long days right around the summer solstice. The weather tends to be cool and wet, but it's compensated for by the hyper-extended days. During June, the sun there tends to set around 23:00 (or 11 p.m.) and come up around 4:00 (or 4 a.m.). It's prime time to cross things off your Nordic bucket list, like driving around the whole country via the gorgeous Ring Road or trekking up north to dip in the restorative waters of Mývatn. But when is the best time to visit Iceland? Keep reading and we'll give you a guide. What happens in a year in Iceland?

In a recent report by Kayak, Seattle has emerged as the top summer travel destination in the United States, based on an analysis of flight search data for dates between May 24 and September 3. This vibrant city in the Pacific Northwest has captured the attention of travelers everywhere, outpacing other popular locales in search volume.

Despite the average cost of summer tickets to Seattle being $455, making it the second most expensive destination after Honolulu, Hawaii, Seattle’s popularity is unaffected. From its breathtaking natural landscapes to its fun urban attractions, here are four reasons why Seattle has become the country’s number one summer travel destination. 1. Gorgeous natural scenery

Memorial Day is a time to honor our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. Though it’s easy to get caught up in the long weekend and associated festivities, it’s also good to reflect on the life we enjoy in the USA.

Memorial Day also gives us an additional day to get out and explore without using vacation time or missing work. While one day might not seem like a lot, three days in a row are a nice chunk for a semi-extended trip. For some, that means hopping on a plane and flying hundreds (or thousands) of miles to relax and recharge.

Looking for Discount Flights? Search Cheap Airfare on These Six Legit Websites

Posted: June 3, 2024 | Last updated: June 4, 2024

travel agency for cheap flights

Airfare costs have  skyrocketed in recent years as airlines attempt to recoup the costs lost during the Covid-19 pandemic.  These days, the price of tickets for the same flight varies as much as the number of seats on the plane, and finding affordable tickets is harder than ever.

You’re not alone if you’re struggling to book a flight that won’t cost your monthly salary —saving money while traveling takes time, patience, and research.

The Best Way To Search Cheap Flights

To make the most of your time and money, the best way to search for cheap flights is to use a website that populates flights from as many airlines as possible. Additionally, flying during midweek will save you money, as will having flexibility when you leave and return home and booking at least a couple of weeks in advance.

Lastly, flying during peak  travel  season, such as major holidays and during the summer months, will give you the least amount of airfare savings.

On a side note, using browser extensions like Rakuten and Swagbucks will save you even more money in the long run by giving you cash back on popular third-party booking sites. My advice? Leave plenty of time to research several airfare websites and take notes so you can compare prices easily.

Google Flights

Google Flights is very user-friendly when it comes to finding and booking flights. By only typing in your departing and arriving airports, you will see a calendar for the current month and the next to get you started. The calendar highlights the cheapest flights to help you narrow down dates. From there, flights are highlighted by the lowest price and trip time.

Additionally, some flights have a price guarantee: if the price drops after you’ve booked, Google will pay back the difference. However, Google Flights has a drawback: not all airlines, including Southwest, are included in the search results.

Formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights, Going’s spin on cheap flights starts with your destination in mind. With two tiers of paid Premium and Elite member perks, including deals on points and miles, international airfare, and mistake fares, if you fly often, the fee will pay for itself. In addition, you’ll have access to all international and economy plans for both tiers. With the top tier, Elite, you can also search for the best prices on business and first-class flights.

If you don’t want to pay a monthly fee, Going offers a Limited Membership highlighting flights in the Continental U.S. With the paid membership, a nice inclusion is its Watchlist. Add a destination, and you’ll get flight alerts and deals. Again, you’re paying for it, but it will save you time and effort.

If you’re all about saving money on the flight itself and aren’t concerned with departure dates or times, Kiwi is a good website. All you need for information is the departure and arrival airports; there is no need for the details. Flights are highlighted by lowest price and fastest route and then can be narrowed down by baggage, stops, and connections.

A nice feature for Kiwi is the ability to lock in a flight price for a low fee. For example, when I searched Pittsburgh to Orlando International for $11, I could lock in the cost of $93. I then had three days to commit to booking the flight or forfeiting my deposit. Once locked in, I’d receive that price if the price lowers. If the price increases, Kiwi would pay the difference up to a certain amount or refund the ticket.

Kayak uses a color-coded calendar to showcase the cheapest flights to and from a destination. You’ll need to know your departure and arrival airport to get price details, but you can choose your arrival and departure dates based on a green, yellow, and red system. By checking the left sidebar, Kayak also highlights whether you should purchase a ticket now or if prices will drop in the next seven days.

Once you’ve selected a flight, you’ll be taken to another website, either the airline’s official or another third-party website, to complete the booking. If I had to give Kayak a thumbs down for something, it’s the fact that Southwest Airlines’ prices aren’t shown until you are transferred to its official site.

Completely free to use and with zero hidden charges, Momondo searches the web for the best flight prices using major airlines and smaller company sites. It offers the flexibility to “mix and match” your flights by using one airline carrier to depart and another to return home. Of course, you don’t have to fly this way, but the opportunity is there if you want to save money on flights.

Momondo is similar to Kayak and uses a color-coded calendar to show the cheapest days to fly. You don’t have to have exact dates with this flying style, giving those with travel flexibility the upper hand.

Skiplagged’s spin on cheap flights is unusual in that it highlights how United Airlines sued the company but lost. While booking through this site isn’t illegal, trying to use skip-lagging tactics, where you depart your flight on a layover and deliberately miss your connection, can get you into some trouble.

Starting with your departure airport, give the website departure and arrival dates; it will search for the cheapest flights around the country. For whimsical travelers, this is ideal for those with a Devil-may-care attitude.

These Are the Most Affordable (and Most Expensive) U.S. Airlines

And not all of the least expensive are budget airlines.

Frontier Airlines is the cheapest carrier in the United States, despite its history of upselling customers for things like bags and seat selection.

The ranking is courtesy of a new study from airline compensation company AirAdvisor shared with Travel + Leisure , which looked at total passenger revenue per seat mile for the top 10 airlines in the U.S. When it comes to Frontier, the airline was more than $0.01 per mile cheaper than the next cheapest airline, fellow low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines.

“Frontier Airlines is often referred to as an ultra-low-cost carrier, and this certainly rings true based on our research,” AirAdvisor wrote in the study. “US airlines don’t get any cheaper than this as a whole.”

The ranking comes as both Frontier and Spirit recently eliminated most change and cancellation fees and Spirit made it easier to use travel vouchers for longer .

Next on the list was Hawaiian Airlines, which came in as the third cheapest airline and the cheapest non-ultra-low cost carrier. In fact, AirAdvisor found Hawaiian Airlines was “by far the best combination of reliability and price of any airline we reviewed.”

Low-cost airline Allegiant Air and JetBlue rounded out the top five, but AirAdvisor noted Allegiant’s revenue per seat mile was $0.03 more than Frontier’s.

On the other end of the spectrum was Delta Air Lines , which came in as the most expensive airline per mile, but also one of the most reliable. That said, there are still ways to save.

“Delta offers flights all over the world, so there is a place for them on the itinerary of even the most budget-conscious traveler,” AirAdvisor wrote in the report. “Their website has a section for current flight deals, and you can subscribe to their newsletter to be informed whenever new sales are starting.”

Delta was followed by Southwest Airlines , which came in as the second most expensive on the list. That was due, in part, to the airline’s optional upgraded fare categories that come with perks like seat selection.

To form the list, AirAdvisor said it averaged the revenue per available seat mile for each airline in 2022 and 2023. The company specializes in helping travelers collect compensation from airlines when they are owed and collects a commission when the airline pays.

Beyond booking the cheapest airlines, travelers can save by buying tickets with specific airlines on certain days , being flexible, and setting price alerts .

For additional details on specific coverage from each travel insurance plan and to input your trip information for a quote, see our comparison table below.

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

Protect your trip: Search, compare and buy the best travel insurance plans for the lowest price. Get a quote .

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.
