Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for a Cunard Cruise!

Cunard Cruises have a reputation for being the most formal cruise line in the world. People often don’t book a cruise with this company because they think you have to dress formally every night. The reality is that is not the case. During the day it is very relaxed and most evenings it is smart attire except for the Gala nights.

Cunard do have formal nights that they call Gala nights. It depends on the length of the cruise as to how many there will be. On a four night cruise you can expect one which in our experience on the Queen Elizabeth Cruise Ship was the Black and White Gala night. However on our 4 night Queen Mary 2 cruise we had two, which were just Gala Nights. This was because the cruise could of been booked as two night cruises too. On a weeks cruise expect two, and on our ten night cruise there were three Gala Nights, Black and White, Red and Gold and Roaring 20’s. On a two week cruise expect four which can also include the Masquerade Gala Night.

Here we explain what the Gala nights mean and what you should pack for your Cunard cruise. An important point to understand is that dressing up for the formal nights is not compulsory and you do not have to join in with the Gala nights if you do not want to. There are other areas around the ship which you can enjoy. However we would recommend that you do as it was great to see everyone dressed up and we think an important part of the Cunard experience.

In this post you will find out what is acceptable to wear for all the Gala Nights and what is acceptable dress for the day and evenings on a regular night on a Cunard cruise. You will then know exactly what you need to pack and will not have to worry!

Also note before your cruise you will be able to access My Cunard with your booking number and see which Gala Nights will be on your particular cruise by going to your calender.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for a Cunard Cruises Gala Night

On our Queen Elizabeth cruises all the Gala nights were themed which are explained below, however on Queen Mary 2, we had two gala nights that were just called ‘Gala Nights’.

Gala Night is just like any other formal night on any cruise line, and any style or colour goes. If you want to go full ball gown you would not look out of place, or a a simple black dress would do too. For men a suit and tie, or tuxedo and bow tie is appropriate.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for Cunard Cruises Black and White Gala Night

Cunard Queen Elizabeth Britannia Restaurant

The theme for the Black and White night is exactly that, a monochrome outfit of your choice. It states this in the Daily Programme – ‘Dinner Jacket, tuxedo or dark suit with regular tie or bow tie for gentlemen. Evening or cocktail dress, smart trouser suit or formal separates for ladies. *Guests are welcome to embellish their Gala Evening attire to fit the applicable theme of the evening, for Black and White night, by dressing in simple, monochrome finery.’

As mentioned above it is not compulsory to join in with these Gala evenings and the daily programme also says ‘Relax – Feel free to dress casually as you visit any of the following venues: Lido Restaurant, Golden Lion, Casino, Cafe Corinthia, Garden Lounge and The Yacht Club.’

However the Gala nights are amazing to be part of and we would definitely recommend packing a simple outfit so you can join in. Every cruise I pack a knee length black dress and this was perfect for the black and white gala night. Paul packed his tuxedo and bow tie which worked well too. As long as your outfit is black, white or both then that will be fine.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for a Cunard Cruises Red and Gold Gala Night

red and gold gala night cunard Queen Elizabeth

The formal Red and Gold Gala night is a celebration of Cunard’s rich heritage. Putting on a red dress or a red suit jacket, a red or gold waist coat would work but also a simple flash of red in a scarf or tie does the trick. For the Red and Gold night on our cruise, Paul wore a red shirt, I wore a red top and we both wore black trousers which worked well.

Cunard Dress Code - What to pack for a Cunard Cruises Roaring 20's Gala Night

Big Band Queens Room Roaring Twenties

For the Roaring 20’s Gala Night the Cunard daily programme just states ‘For Roaring 20’s night, go all out glamour or adorn a flourish which embraces the spirit of the decade.’ A simple hint towards the theme such as braces or a black and white fedora hat for the men and a feathered boa or slide for the ladies would work. We wore similar outfits to the black and white night and others did too. However, some of the passengers went full gangster and flapper mode and it was fabulous to see. We have now purchased some flapper gear as you can see above!

What can I wear during the evening on a Cunard cruise when it is not a Gala night?

Cunard dress code smart attire

When it wasn’t Gala Night the dress code for the evenings is smart attire. On the daily programme it states ‘Gentlemen we request that you wear trousers with a collared shirt, jacket and tie is optional. Ladies, blouses and skirts or stylish trousers and dresses are welcome.’

Men just need to wear a shirt or polo with a collar and ladies a simple smart outfit that could be trousers/skirt with a simple top/cardigan or jumper. If you are used to cruising then this is the same as you would wear on any smart dress evenings.

What can I wear during the day on a Cunard cruise?

Cunard dress code smart attire

Any thing goes in the day and the evening themes as explained above come in place at 1800.

We put off cruising with Cunard for to long as we thought that we would have to dress formally all the time and this is definitely not the case. We hope this post has been useful so you can now understand what you can wear on a Cunard cruise.

What it’s like to sail on Cunard’s newest ship, Queen Anne

If finger sandwiches and scones delivered directly to your sun lounger sounds like your kind of cruise, Cunard’s newest, most luxurious ship , Queen Anne, is the epitome of refinement, writes Jo Kessel

Not many cruise ships sell jewellery worn by royalty, but it is on the world’s most elegant British cruise line, Cunard. I’m sailing on their new Queen Anne, the fourth to join its fleet, when I spot a ring similar to Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring. It’s designed by royal jeweller Garrard and the sales assistant slips it on my finger. It looks fabulous.

“Just give me your room key and it’s yours!” she smiles.

Unfortunately, the ring’s a whopping $34k and I reluctantly remove it - though not before I’ve tried on its matching necklace and tiara.

When shipping magnate Sir Samuel Cunard operated his first transatlantic voyage from the UK to the US in 1839 he couldn’t have imagined that 185 years and 249 ships later, his cruise line would still be sailing. Famed for their elegant, sophisticated vessels, all Cunard’s ships are named after British monarchs, including Queen Anne’s three elder sisters: Elizabeth, Victoria and Queen Mary 2.

It’s not just Cunard’s ship names thatare regal; so too is the on-board experience. The bars sparkle, the wood gleams and the 3000-passenger, 14-deck Queen Anne has an atrium so grand that its sweeping staircases hark back to the golden age of cruising. As for the ship’s drawing room, library and ballroom, they’re all fit for a palace, ditto my cabin. It’s called a Princess Suite and its red and gold décor, marble bathroom and luxuriously soft bath robes lend it a royal feel.

Guests staying in Princess and Queens’ suites have access to their own exclusive restaurants called ‘Grills’ as well as their own sun terrace. And it’s here they’re privy to a special teatime treat. Cunard’s famed for its traditional afternoon tea served in the ballroom by white-gloved waiters, but if you’re on that sun terrace and don’t want to budge, they’ll deliver sandwiches and scones direct to your lounger.

Mine is a historic British Isles voyage during which Queen Anne has an official naming ceremony in Liverpool. Afterwards, we set sail for Ireland and the ship is abuzz with activity. You can take lessons in fencing and archery, learn to waltz or cha-cha and there’s lots of live music and dancing. There’s even a Masquerade Ball, though be careful coming down those grandiose stairs in a mask. I tripped, unable to see my feet.

Guests are an international bunch– including many antipodeans – who enjoy dressing up. But it’s not all about fancy balls. There are also discos, DJs and an exciting new, immersive cabaret venue called Bright Lights Society. Its burlesque shows are brilliant fun.

The $1 billion Queen Anne is a destination in itself and some guests never leave the ship, but I’m keen to explore southern Ireland. A ship excursion takes me to Blarney Castle, set in glorious grounds and home to the infamous Stone, said to grant the gift of eloquence if you kiss it. You have to queue a while for that smooch – holidaymakers line up in their hundreds – but it’s hard to resist. A long stroll and Irish coffee later I return to the colourful port of Cobh where Queen Anne is docked. The final 123 passengers to board the Titanic alighted here and at the end of the town is a moving Memorial Garden which tells the story of the 49 who perished.

Back on board it’s time for some R&R. The ship has three pools (one’s thermal) as well as a Himalayan salt sauna, which relaxes limbs to a whole new level. For some proper royal pampering, however, the hot salt stone massage is a must. It’s so unbelievably healing that I go in with backache and leave pain-free.

There’s just one problem … I overeat. Some of it is healthy (like salads from the new Wellness Café ) and some of it is naughty: think sponge puddings from the ship’s Golden Lion pub. And some of it is downright decadent. If you pre-order from the a la carte menu in the Princess Grill they’ll even cook your meal tableside. The roast duck à l’orange is sensational, with lashings of Cointreau.

I try burning calories by doing Zumba classes, but alas it’s my credit card which gets the bigger workout, with lots of upmarket British brands in the boutiques. There’s Atkinsons perfume (they’ve been creating fragrances since 1799), Launer handbags (favoured by the late Queen Elizabeth) as well as Chapel Down sparkling wine. Who knew Brits made bubbles? It’s actually pretty good; light with hints of apple. Top tip: check the Daily Planner’s shopping section for scheduled free tastings.

On the last night, a piece of costume jewellery catches my eye. It’s more diamante than diamonds, but once on it gives the impression of being the real deal and I buy it. No matter that it’s not quite Princess Di’s engagement ring, it still looks and feels fit for a Princess … just like Cunard’s Queen Anne.

Queen Anne is currently sailing round-trip Southampton, UK cruises to the Mediterranean, Scandinavia, Canary Islands and Norwegian Fjords from $1,154.59pp. Visit: cunard.com

Dress Code and Theme Schedules for 2021-22

Here are links to partial 2021-22 dress code and themed evening schedules for Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth in PDF format. I've compiled these schedules from what other members have found on "My Cunard" within the day-by-day calendars for their voyages.  As of this posting, schedules are apparently not yet available for Queen Victoria.

QM2:    QM2 2021-22 Dress Code and Theme Schedule

QE:    QE 2021-22 Dress Code and Theme Schedule

This is very much a work-in-progress with many gaps in these schedules. I have filled in some gaps for QM2 under the assumption all seven-night transatlantic crossings will adhere to a standard schedule as they have in the past.

If you can fill in any of the gaps in these schedules, please post what you are seeing in "My Cunard" (or have learned elsewhere). If you are seeing schedules for QV, please post those here as well. I'll need the name of the ship, the begin/end dates of your voyage, and the dates and themes for all the "Gala Evenings" on your itinerary.

If you see anything that needs to be corrected, please post those corrections here as well. These documents reside on my Google Drive so I'll be able to update them there with your additions and corrections without needing to attach new versions here.

Thanks @bluemarble I have checked my next cruise on QM2 on 22 May 2022 and there is no dress code. Only 2 sea days but should be at least one gala night.

That's what I thought. When the QE2 did 5 day crossings the first and last days were casual (because you wouldn't have access to your steamer trunk). But the middle 3 nights were formal. Even though the QM2 takes 7 days to do a crossing, I sorta assumed they carried over the 3 formal nights. With only 2 formal nights there's a bit less of an incentive to pack a tux.

I may have mentioned it elsewhere, but we are staunch traditionalist and wear black tie 5 of 7 nights on a TA regardless. On the unofficial black tie nights, I get a bit more creative with my tie and cummerbund.

Yes, there have been three formal/gala evenings on every QM2 crossing I've been on. My first crossing in 2005 was six nights. It had this dress code schedule (with three dress code categories).

Night 1: Casual

Night 2: Formal

Night 3: Formal

Night 4: Informal

Night 5: Formal

Night 6: Casual

For the record, for gentlemen, "Casual" meant jacket and tie optional, "Informal" meant jacket and tie required and "Formal" meant tuxedo or dark suit.

Recently for seven-night QM2 crossings, nights 2, 4 and 6 have been "Gala Evenings". The new dress code schedules are switching night 4 to "Smart Attire".

250+ Club

and on the 28 days QM2 cruise to the Caribbean I see there are only 4 formal nights - this suits me fine! (see what I did there?).

Gala Evenings for the Caribbean portion of M143B. (16 & 20 Dec confirmed as you have previously listed, as are 4th & 8th January)

23 Dec Black & White

25 Dec Red & Gold

31 Dec Listed as Gala Evening at present with no designation.

Thank you for posting this schedule.  Looks like I need to find something for the Roaring twenties gala.  I need some suggestions for this as it was before my time.

Cunard offers the following attire suggestions for the Roaring Twenties theme.

Formal Wear Gentlemen – Double breasted pin-striped suit or tailcoat & waistcoat. Fedora or top hat Ladies – Flapper dresses, feather boas, beads, headbands and gloves

By the way @shippmates , if you could help me fill in the gap in the schedule for mid-August 2022, that would be very helpful. The dress codes and themes ought to be listed in the day-by-day calendar for your voyage within "My Cunard". I just need to know which nights are listed as Gala Evenings along with the themes for those evenings. Thanks so much if you can assist with that.

According to my Cunard here is the dress code for the 23 day sailing on QM2 in August of 2022.

August 5,7,8,9,11,12,14,16,17,18,19,21,23,24,25,27 are all smart attire

August 6 - Red and Gold Gala

August 10 - Roaring 20's Gala

August 13 - Gala

August 15 - Black & White Gala

August 20 - Red and Gold Gala

August 22 - Black & White Gala

August 26 - Masquerade Gala

After receiving the schedule for another of QE's 7-night Barcelona itineraries during August-October 2022 (thanks,  @Lynnewob ), I think it's safe to apply the pattern from the known schedules to fill in gaps for the rest of those 7-night Barcelona itineraries.

Of course the elephant in the room is what is going to happen for QE's canceled voyages Q209N through Q217N. For now I have grayed-out the schedules for those voyages.

We now also have the dress code schedule for QM2's first voyage back in service (M141N) thanks to @Mickb .

Hamburg and cherbourg, 5 nights..

15 Mar - 20 Mar 2022

March 15 Smart Attire March 16 Gala Evening March 17 Smart Attire March 18 Gala Evening-Black and White March 19 Smart Attire.

From MyCunard:

Atlantic Coast Adventure (13th-23rd Dec)

3 Formal Nights

14th Dec - Black & White

16th Dec - Red & Gold

21st Dec - Roaring Twenty's

For M209P  Mar 20-Apr 24 I'm seeing four more, total 10 across the five weeks

March 28 Black & White

March 31 Roaring Twenties

April 7      Red & Gold

April 12   'Gala Evening'

I should have said total 9

I'm not sure if this is significant, but for 13 December QM2 crossing, there is no longer a theme listed for the second gala evening. The entry for 20 December now simply says "Gala Evening".

I have updated the "QE 2021-22 Dress Code and Theme Schedule" document above to show the newly-released QE replacement itineraries for 20 Feb through 3 Jun 2022. Naturally I don't yet have any information about the dress code/theme schedules for those new voyages.

If you happen to book any of those replacement voyages and find the dress code/theme schedule listed within the day-by-day Calendar in "My Cunard", please post the schedule here.

The same applies if you are on any other voyages still missing from the master documents above for either QM2 or QE.

As a reminder, to keep things simple all I really need is the ship you will be on, the dates of your voyage, the dates which will be "Gala" evenings and the themes (if any) for those gala evenings.

Hello bluemarble

We’re on the Southampton to Vancouver leg, 43 nights, departing 2 May. From my Cunard today are the following……

2 May Gala - black and white

6 May Gala - masquerade

9 May Gala - black and white

11 May Gala - not specified

15 May Gala - masquerade

18 May Gala - black and white

23 May Gala - not specified

26 May Gala - masquerade

2 June Gala - Roaring 20’s

5 June Gala - black and white

12 June Gala - Roaring 20’s

i think there will be some changes to these as I can’t see the 2 May happening as this is embarkation day.

but it’s what is detailed currently.

Thank you very much for your contribution @Castro and Millie .

I fear what they have done is simply retained the dress code and theme schedules from when these dates were part of QE's Japan itineraries. 2 May used to be the day after an embarkation day in Tokyo. I'll assume your first gala evening will actually be 3 May, the day after you embark.

The gala evening for your port day in Puntarenas on 23 May also seems questionable. That was originally going to be a sea day crossing the Pacific from Japan to Alaska. I'll leave that one where it is for now though.

The three repetitions of the black and white/masquerade themes at the beginning of your voyage are also suggestive of those simply being carried over from the previous schedules when those dates where part of three separate Japan voyages.

But it is what it is for now anyway. If you receive any future updates to this schedule, I'd appreciate learning about the changes.

"Live from...."

Also booked one of the new QE voyages and on the calendar embarkation day is showing as a Gala Night!

OK, I'd still like to document the dress code details for your voyage,  @LadyL1 . If you'd be so kind as to post what you're seeing, I'll add it to the QE master schedule, moving the first gala might to the day after embarkation for your voyage as well. Perhaps I'll add a note that the schedules for the QE replacement voyages are only provisional. Thanks for your assistance with this project.

The 26 best new cruise ships for 2024.

Check out these exciting new vessels before booking your next cruise.

The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

It will accommodate 68 more passengers than its sister ships, but feature Viking's signature veranda staterooms, public spaces, amenities and dining venues. Seasoned Viking cruisers can look forward to favorites like The Nordic Spa, the Wintergarden, Mamsen's, the Explorers' Lounge, the Sports Deck, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and The Chef's Table.

Top feature: Debut of new Disney Parks-inspired onboard venues

Fares begin around: $4,028 per person (double occupancy) for a seven-night Caribbean cruise

Sails to: Eastern and Western Caribbean, Castaway Cay (Disney Cruise Line's private island)

Fans of Disney Cruise Line will find many familiar venues, attractions and restaurants on the new Disney Treasure, sister ship of Disney Wish . However, there will also be plenty of new features, including the theme of the ship: adventure. The Grand Hall, inspired by the movie "Aladdin," is designed with dark shades of blue, turquoise and gold and features a golden statue of a magic carpet with Aladdin and Jasmine.

Plaza de Coco replaces Disney Wish's "Frozen" dining experience with a two-night Mexican, "Coco"-themed theatrical dinner show. Meanwhile, "Disney The Tale of Moana" – a Broadway-style production based on the film "Moana" – will be exclusive to Disney Treasure. Adults will also find new lounges, such as the Jungle Cruise-themed Skipper Society and the Periscope Pub, which is inspired by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Disney Treasure can carry up to 4,000 passengers.

MSC World America: Spring 2025

MSC's new futuristic ship – and sister ship to MSC World Europa – will be based in Miami and sail the Caribbean. The LNG-powered, 6,762-passenger ship will offer more than 420,000 square feet of public space and many of the attractions found on World Europa, such as the MSC Luna Park Arena and World Galleria. There will also be more than 30 dining venues, bars and lounges, as well as the line's private enclave, MSC Yacht Club.

Oceania Allura: June 2025

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Allura is scheduled to debut in June 2025.

Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.
