Collette History & Story

History Back in 1918, when Jack Collette started the company, the first tour to ever run was made up of a jitney bus of travelers that left Boston, Massachusetts headed for Florida. This three-week adventure cost just $61.50! At that time few could have foreseen that nearly 100 years later, that same company would be taking guests from around the world to all seven continents. Today Collette is now a global company. With offices in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, its team of dedicated experts can cater to the tastes of distinct groups of travelers. Collette's diverse travel collection features comprehensive land tours, river cruises, rail journeys, small group tours, city stays, and a variety of travel styles and tour types to meet every traveler's needs.  We seamlessly handle the details - all our guests need to do is enjoy the journey. Awards Collette has been honored with Travel Weekly's 21st annual Readers' Choice Awards (RCAs) on December 13, 2023. Collette was thrilled to take home two awards at the RCAs this year: Best Tour Operator for the US and Best Tour Operator for Canada.

The Travelling Well Experience

Each guest that travels with us deserves a memorable and fulfilling travel experience. And we intend to continue to deliver on that promise. Your health, well-being, and enjoyment remain our top focus — just as they have been since we started in 1918.

Our team consults with health and security experts all around the world to ensure a healthy and enjoyable travel experience. Let’s take a look into the steps we’re taking for you.

Cancel for Any Reason Waiver

Our Travel Protection Plan financially protects you in the event you need to cancel or move your trip to a different date. Learn more here

Pre-Tour Health Screenings

We will ask all travellers to complete a wellness declaration form before joining their tour.

Private Sedan Service

Your ride to and from the airport will be stocked with fresh water for every pickup and all surfaces will be disinfected daily and after every passenger.

Specific details will vary by airline, but standard operations typically include flight attendants wearing masks, sanitizing all surfaces between flights and physical distancing. For links to major airlines, head to the bottom of the page, or visit your airline’s website for specific information.

Smaller Groups

Tours will operate with a number of empty seats to allow guests to space out for a more comfortable experience.

Your Tour Manager

We have employed new and enhanced hygiene & physical distancing protocols for tour managers. They are local experts and highly trained to handle a variety of unexpected situations — including illnesses and emergencies. They are also available 24/7 for guests throughout the tour should any situation arise.

Use of Face Coverings

Face coverings will be included with your pre-tour documents and will be required throughout many experiences on tour including the motor coach and air travel.

Motor Coach

All surfaces will be sanitized often, including regular cleaning of high-touch areas with disinfecting wipes. Hand sanitizer will be available at all times and drivers will wear protective gear when appropriate.

On-Tour Experiences

We work closely with our local partners to ensure adequate physical distancing during meals, experiences, and sightseeing. Guests may be rotated in smaller sub-groups when necessary.

On-Tour Insurance Coverages

When you purchase our Travel Protection Plan, you’ll have access to telehealth services should you need it, plus you’re covered on tour for emergency assistance, baggage loss, trip interruption, medical expenses, and more. Learn more here

Self-Screening

We will ask all travellers to monitor their health throughout their tour, with protocols in place in the event someone becomes ill.

Specific protocols will vary from destination to destination, hotel to hotel. Overall, rooms and areas like restaurants, fitness centres, etc. will be deep-cleaned regularly, with rooms disinfected thoroughly between guests. High-traffic areas like lobbies and elevators will be cleaned hourly.

After you get home, you’ll be able to share your opinions of your tour experience, allowing us to constantly improve for the benefit of future guests.

Sustainability

We’re proud of our long legacy of giving back, especially to our local communities. Today, we are driving that legacy forward by continuing to be more responsible across four focus areas: People, Community, Planet, and Travel. People: Our employees are at the heart of our responsibility platform; pushing for change, creating priorities, and generously giving their time to support programs and initiatives. Community: We seek to support our local communities and those across the world through grants and initiatives that focus on ending hunger and improving education outcomes, especially among children Planet: Because our industry relies heavily on fossil fuels and contributes to global climate change, we feel it is important for us as a company to address our impact on the environment. Travel: We want to make responsible decisions when it comes to traveling to destinations across the world. This includes supporting and promoting local culture, heritage, and economies. These are the initiatives that this operator has in place to make your adventure more sustainable: Sustainability Programs - Invests a percentage of revenue back into community projects or sustainability projects  - We host community-building or sustainability projects for tour-goers to partake in Reducing Carbon Emissions - Has a program in place and are working towards becoming fully carbon neutral Supporting Destinations and Local Communities - Hires local guides - Brings our passengers to locally run restaurants & businesses Animal Welfare - Does not offer any tours that include elephant riding - Does not offer any tours that use animals for entertainment - We avoid places that sell/eat parts of endangered animals on tour Company Culture - Hosts community-building or sustainability projects for staff to partake in - Educates people about sustainability through our marketing

Questions & Answers

How can i plan for shore landings.

Special clothing is required for the shore landings (Antarctica, Galapagos); please refer to your predeparture documents for important details.

Are attractions always available?

Access to some attractions or Collette Foundation sites may be affected by the observance of holidays, weather conditions or other circumstances. As a result, the days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilize your time on tour. Boat rides are weather permitting. Some attractions may not be available during the "off-season" months. When attractions are unavailable, other similar attractions will be substituted. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

When can I check into my hotel?

Normal check-in time is late afternoon in most locations. Due to early arrival times into some cities, rooms may not always be available for immediate check-in.

What is the difference between a twin room and a double room?

In certain countries, hotel rooms tend to be smaller than U.S. standard accommodations. A double room is designed to accommodate two people, but may not have two separate beds. A twin-bedded room has two separate beds of any size, and is the type most commonly utilized.

How can I be best prepared for the pacing and physical requirements on a Collette tour?

Tour pacing varies by itinerary, and each destination's sightseeing and activities are unique. Pacing is subject to personal interpretation. At Collette, we do include the best a destination has to offer, enhancing your overall tour experience. For overnight pacing of a tour, please refer to the "Accommodations" section on each tour page and on the tour map. These describe the number of nights you will stay in each hotel during your tour. The day-by-day descriptions will provide additional detail about the number of activities included in each day. The Tour Activity Level Ranking is featured on each tour itinerary in a circle. The definition of each activity level is listed here. If you have additional questions regarding a specific tour, please inquire at time of reservation. For your comfort, we recommend packing comfortable walking shoes so you can fully enjoy every aspect of your tour. Level 1: At a very leisurely pace, this tour involves minimal physical activity, such as climbing some stairs, boarding a motorcoach, and walking from the hotel reception area to hotel rooms and dining areas. Level 2: This tour requires average physical activity. You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk reasonable distances, possibly over uneven ground and cobblestoned streets. Level 3: This tour includes moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, up stairs or on uneven walking surfaces should be expected. Level 4: To truly experience the program and destination, you need to be able to participate in physical activities such as longer walking tours, walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs and periods of standing. Some of the touring days may be longer, with select included activities occurring later in the evening. Level 5: This tour is very active, requiring participants to be physically fit to fully enjoy all the experiences. This itinerary has more strenuous activities which may include such things as: extensive walking tours, transfers over uneven and dusty terrain, high altitudes, early morning departures, late night activities, or extreme temperatures. All conditions do not apply to all days, so please read the itinerary carefully and speak to one of our travel counselors to determine if this tour is right for you. We recommend this program to individuals who are physically fit. Unfortunately, this tour is not appropriate for individuals who use either walkers or wheelchairs. If this trip is not ideally suited for you, our travel counselors can help determine the perfect trip for you.

Where do I meet my Tour Manager?

Your tour will begin at your first hotel. The Tour Manager will make contact with you at the hotel and will provide details relating to your tour. The hotel's address and phone number will be included in your documents.

Is there a lot of walking on tour?

We pride ourselves on bringing travelers the very best experiences a destination offers. Our itineraries include many activities and may consist of walking on uneven terrain or significant walking at times. Some of the most unique sightseeing can mean accessing locations that restrict motorcoaches, especially in historic areas. Some hotels/lodges in remote locations may not have elevators. For your comfort, we recommend bringing walking shoes.

Can children travel on a Collette tour?

Children over the age of 5 may travel on a Collette tour accompanied by an adult. Child land rates are valid for ages 5-12, sharing a room with two full-paying adults.

Collette Travel Style

Collette promises the “trip of a lifetime” through exclusive outings, luxury touches, and appreciating the moments of anticipation before the world reveals itself. Their travel style is about discovering new cultures, embracing the explorer within -- in time for a cocktail at the end of the day.

Beautiful national park landscape

They have 6 broad classifications for travel style: Classic, Explorations, Spotlights, River Cruise, Faith, and Impact Travel:

1. Classic Collette Tours - This is what they call their Flagship collection, group tours that make the postcard come to life. Visit all the must see sites, enjoy cultural experiences, all with a professional and knowledgeable guide, there to help make your travel as seamless as possible. Groups are on the larger side

2. Explorations - These tours are about going deeper, meeting locals, and getting off the beaten path. “Authenticity” is a big word for Collette Explorations. You’ll experience the destination in a smaller group, an average of 18 people, allowing for access to more local experiences not available to larger groups. Classic sites will also be included in your itinerary, but the focus is mostly on unique experiences.

3. Spotlights - Have a shorter amount of time and don’t want to miss anything? Collette Spotlight tours are designed to maximize your city stay or short getaway experience. These are primarily walking tours, packed with sightseeing, historical and cultural information, but with some downtime as well. Typically these tours are between 5-9 days.

4. River Cruise - A very popular mode of travel, particularly for 50+ travelers, river cruising is ideal for those seeking a leisurely vacation, unpacking only once, enjoying gliding by beautiful sites and participating in various guided shore excursions. Everyone at Collette believes travel is vital to a life well-lived and our executive team sets the tone. Drawing on a diverse set of skills that includes operations, sales, information technology, law and financial planning, they work across three offices to bring you the best experience possible.

There are so many benefits to letting someone else take on all the details that come with having The Perfect Trip. See why more and more travelers choose to Go Guided — and why they never go back.

5 Reasons to Go Guided:

Go Tour Managers!

On Day 1 of your trip, you’ll meet a friendly person who sure does know a lot about your tour and the destinations you’re visiting. This highly skilled professional is your tour manage and from the moment you meet this key player on your tour, you’ll know you’re in good hands. With their rich travel backgrounds, as well as their useful information about language, currency, and all things local, you can relax and enjoy the ride.

Go Culture!

Visiting a destination gives you a taste of the local culture. But imagine actually becoming part of that culture. Staying overnight in an Irish castle like Old-World royalty…feeling the cool waters of the Great Barrier Reef envelop you as you snorkel in its turquoise paradise…or rolling dough with an Italian chef to make the perfect pizza. It’s not just about all the iconic spots that will make for the best photos, it’s about diving into another world that makes for the best memories.

Go Product Team!

Our product experts are probably on the road right now — scoping out the best of our worldwide destinations. They go, take it all in, and find the moments they love best. Those are the moments they create for you. Those experiences and sights comprise each itinerary and make each one extra-special. Best of all, you don’t have to plan a thing. You just need to choose which itinerary best suits you.

Travel is social by nature. Guided travel is extra social. Meet a cast of characters: your fellow travelers, tour manager, driver, local guides and more. The social aspect of guided travel is one of the best parts! Many travelers on our tours have forged lasting friendships. Think of all the wonderful people waiting to meet you out in the world.

Go Worry-Free!

Your peace of mind is the most important thing to us. And that starts with our roundtrip home to airport sedan service. Forget taxis, airport fees, or public transportation. We will get you there...and back. And if for any reason you need to cancel your tour, you can do so — right up until the day before departure — and receive a full refund (thanks to our travel protection plan).

There are many ways to experience the world:

Among Collette’s worldwide collection of tours we offer a variety of guided travel choices. No matter where (or how) you want to go, Collette can take you there.

Small Groups, Big Experiences

From vibrant cities to remote villages, immerse yourself in other worlds. Along the way Explorations sets the stage for the unexpected moments that make travel so special. With just 12-24 passengers, these are the personal adventures that today’s cultural explorers dream about.

Amazing Family Moments Included

Collette's Family tours bring travelers of all ages together to experience the world’s greatest destinations. Destination Must-See's

North America Continent ms2

Washington, D.C.:

A tour of the United States can mean many things. Each region has its own culture and history. From Paul Revere’s ride through the New England countryside to San Francisco’s Golden Gate the promise of America rings true. Few other places offer so much. You may find yourself listening to jazz in New Orleans or meeting the cowboys of Jackson Hole. It could be the wilds of Yosemite or the back roads of Boston; either way few countries can offer so much.

North America Continent ms1

Niagara Falls:

The truth is we would run out of space (and adjectives) if we tried to fit in all the things that make Canada such a remarkable country. From the shores of the Canadian Maritimes to the European style of Quebec City and Montreal to epic Banff National Park and on to the forests of Vancouver, there is always more Canada to explore. Come along and explore the vibrant culinary scene, breathtaking landscapes and more.

North America Continent ms3r

Grand Canyon:

Breathtaking panoramas and layers of vibrant color tell the story of earth’s geological past. You will come to know why it draws nearly 5 million visitors each year who come to see this natural wonder of the world. The canyon’s massive span and dramatic hues dazzle the senses and inspire the spirit. This western wonder is so vast, it rises nearly a mile from the floor with the barely recognizable Colorado River flowing below.

New York City:

From Little Italy to Greenwich Village, New York City is a destination even the most seasoned traveler can enjoy. It’s home to beautiful Central Park and glittering Times Square and famous for its renowned Broadway shows. The island of Manhattan is flanked by the Hudson River where you find the iconic Statue of Liberty and historic Ellis Island. The poignant 9/11 Museum sits quietly but prominently in Lower Manhattan. “Start spreading the news!” This is “the Big Apple.”

Destination Must-Do's

North America Continent md1

Canadian Rockies:

The highlight of the spectacular Canadian Rockies is a drive along the incredible Icefields Parkway. Paralleling the Great Divide, this special roadway is home to some of the most dramatic vistas in all of North America. Snowcapped mountains engulf the landscape, casting shadows on the adjacent glacial streams. Take time to stop at the Columbia Icefield – a dramatic 200 square mile stretch of land filled with glaciers. Here you may ride across a 1,000 foot thick glacier or walk on the Glacier Skywalk.

North America Continent md2

New Orleans French Quarter

Nestled along the legendary Mississippi River, this historic cultural hub of the city has an old-world feel that attracts writers, musicians and artists. Its streets are lined with art galleries, antique stores, jazz clubs, nightclubs and restaurants. Its eclectic architectural style is a blend of Spanish, French, Creole and American influences. Cobblestone streets are lined with brick buildings that feature charming walled courtyards, ornate cast iron balconies, and copious stoops and porches, all creating the perfect atmosphere for people watching.

North America Continent md3

Denali National Park:

This vast land has a fascinating ecosystem and is more than a park — it is a wildlife reserve. And perhaps its biggest claim to fame is being the home to North America’s highest peak, Denali, ascending more than 20,000 feet. This massive park is now more than 6 million acres, an area that can be compared to the size of Massachusetts. The park is home to nearly forty different varieties of mammals, but the most popular residents are moose, caribou, and wolves, and of course brown and grizzly bears. Denali is Alaska’s heartland and brings you up close to its majestic beauty and natural wonders.

North America Continent md4

Canadian Maritimes:

Lush forests, soaring cliffs and limitless scenic vistas fill your journey through one of the world’s most spectacular coastal regions. You will find wonders like nowhere else including the dramatic tides of the Bay of Fundy and the stunning beauty of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. From the spirit of the outdoors to the old world Gaelic and French influences, you will be enthralled from start to finish.
